If i was forced to filter the concept that you missed today’s show five words to better fund-raising gen shang is a professor at the centre on philanthropy at indiana university. She’s, a philanthropic psychologist. Here is my interview with professor gen shang from may twenty twelve. Wish with me now is dr gen shang. Hello, jan. How are you? Good. How are you? I’m very well. Jen is an assistant professor at the centre on philanthropy at indiana university. She is a philanthropic psychologist. She’s been published in many journals, including experimental economics, economic journal journal. Of marketing, research and marketing science. Her work has also been covered in the new york times and the chronicle of philanthropy, and she is the author of the book fund-raising principles and practice, which is available at amazon dot com. And i’m very pleased that her research in her work brings to the show welcome, jim. Thank you. We’re talking about five words to better fund-raising what was the research that we’re talking about it? So when we study how prime ing people’s idea of more identity come potentially influence, how they give andi when we say more identity, really, what we mend is how carrying kind, compassionate, helpful and friendly people think they are okay, there that’s interesting their moral identity. Yeah. Okay. That’s the that’s. The research will let, uh, what was specifically how did you conduct the research? So this is when during public radio stations on air front drive. I’m sure your listeners are quite familiar with this form of fund-raising this was bloomington bloomington public radio in indiana, right? Yeah, yeah, that steering our bling on radio on their front drive in ah, november, where they’re deejays kind of inter. Interrupt the programming and say things like, you know, here is that i remember and if you could give us this amount and here’s the thing you give, some people call in, and then half of the people who call in they are asked, you know, how are you, anouar renew a member of the station, and then there are thanked for either becoming or being a member of the station and the other half of the donors when they call in there asked exactly the same question, but when there are thanked there think for being kind and carrying member of the station were becoming a helpful and friendly member of the station. Okay, so what we found is that when people are think with those moral adjectives, then they increase their giving, but this is only significant with female, but not mayo donorsearch okay, let’s, let’s, be very clear. What are the five words that you used in your research is caring, compassionate, in-kind friendly and helpful. Okay, that actually reminds me of the used to be a boy scout. I still have an eagle scout kayman eagle scout that just reminds me of if i didn’t mention i’m an eagle scout. Thiss reminds me of the scout law you didn’t know the boy scout law, probably unless you have boys trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean and reverent. So you’ve got you’ve got two or three of those in there. Yeah, that did. You did you derive your your moral adjectives from the boy scout oath? I scott law no law, not the oath. That’s, this is the law. Pardon me. This? Sure. Some off of the participants that participated in the orange inal study where these adjectives war generated they were members of the boy scout. Ok, well, there’s a it could be some overlap, but we don’t know if that’s cause and effect that’s just that could just be coincidental. There were hundreds of people who were asked to list all possible adjectives they can possibly use to describe any moral person. And then we could. And the researchers off that really orange? No study collected the most often used adjectives by most people. Okay, i see. Those are the adjective that’s. How you came up with your caring, compassionate, friendly kind and helpful. Okay, let’s. See, the the research is on ly but only impacts females. Not so. Men are not influenced by the moral adjectives, not the set that we not these five. Hopefully, they’re influenced by the scout law, if their boy scouts, because otherwise, it’s, don’t be a scout if you’re not going. Teo, reverent and helpful and courteous and kind and cheerful, cheerful so. But women are the majority of donors, isn’t that right? Yes. Two thirds ofthe most non-profit donors are female donors. Okay, so so using your research, we can impact two thirds of the giving population. Yeah. Okay, so these people were thanked using one of the moral adjectives, but they hadn’t, but they hadn’t made their gift yet. So what were they thanked for? They were thanks for calling. Uh, as soon as they were called in. As soon as they call in there. Asked whether they want to be a new member of the station or their existing member station. And there are thanked for either becoming a new member or being a member. Okay, so you thank for either being becoming or being a member or you. Thanks for being our becoming a caring, compassionate, etcetera member. O okay, yeah. So do we know whether this applies to written solicitations? Well, we’re we’re currently testing different forms of recon communication. And what we do there is, you know, you mean one of the key things if people were to apply. This technique is not the fact that, you know, they need to write down this five wars, but they need to engage people in thinking about these words, and i think one of the main reasons why our research turned out in the way that it did is because people were asked to answer a question first and that they’re thinking in response to what they think they are already. So when we apply these techniques in return context, what we had to ask people to do is not just to have kind carrying floating everywhere in the letter, but instead only on the renewal forms we want people to say i and then people find their name like gen shang, i wanted to give this much right. And then when i signed my gen shang am fining on those words you’re signing on those words what you mean, like they’re the words are below the below the line where you put your name, the words are actually in the in the box, in the background of that box where i started durney oh, so there’s sort of shaded in the background exact, like a like a watermark. That’s, right? Okay, but this is research you’re just testing this. You don’t have results from from this written written. Test yet? Well, actually, we we dio look at me. I’m way behind. Okay, but the result is that you know, people see exactly the same thing. And half of the people are asked to print their name almost worse. And the other half are asked to sign their name on those words. And we found a marginally statistically significant results. Where if people signed their name, they give more than if they printed their name on those words. Very interesting. But did you also did you also test that against there? Not being any words. Yes, it’s hyre than not having anyone. Okay, definite. Alright, just making that clear. Okay? Yeah. Okay. Yeah, but what’s important there is that when people sign their names, they’re more active in thinking about their identity, who they are. But when they simply print, they don’t think about being both kind and caring compassion. People ask much as if they signed the stamp, their own it and the answer. Those were very interesting. That is very interesting. So, so what’s really driving the effect we think at this point it’s. Not necessarily that non-profit professionals know about those words, but they have to. Think of ways to tap into people’s sense of who they are. And the link those central sons of who they are into those morally, you know, promoted kind of product. What kind of increase in fund-raising did you see in your research? Well, in the first study, it was a ten percent increase in, uh, female donors, um and that’s average give, say about huh? Eighty seven dollars, in the control group where people are simply think and is about one hundred when people think us moral towards okay. And in this direct meaning that we just had it tested it’s about, like, a five percent increase, they’re the average e-giving is much smaller because his christmas appeal so the average amount is, like thirteen pounds and, um, you know, eighteen dollars. But then the effect is about fifty piela it’s about twenty dollars. Okay. And also with women in the only only only an increase for women in the in the writing, or that does that apply to men also in the written form that that that that’s okay, so men are not immoral? No, no. At least not in a written sounds. Yeah, by no means that i think i’m just extrapolated i’m just taking a natural sametz seems like a natural conclusion for your research is that men in conversation are immoral. Well, not that that wouldn’t be how i know i know what i hope not know you’re using more different it’s a very different sense of saying something versus we were just not successful in bringing their own sense of morality to the front, so diplomats make a decision such a diplomatic, academic that’s beautiful, but really mentally moral no, of course, that’s an irrational conclusion, i really i think it is our failure on our part, so what we actually would like to test in the future is to tap into moral values that male might be more likely to engage in, like, responsible loyals strong take leadership pride, yeah, i think you’re i think you’re wasting your time with those just bein sports and cars i think is and booze, i think that’s where you really should be starting, you know, have a little budweiser icon that people sign and watermark that people sign over that will that’s going to get that anheuser busch logo. You know those of this? Where you want to be a corvette? You know, sign your name over this watermark of a corvette that will, i think that’s, where you’re going to see market market change in mark changing giving, we need to take a break right now. What is that here? Well, it’s, i’m interested in studying why people do philanthropy and what, uh, the doing of philosophy might do to their own life. Nasco what it might do to their own, like how it makes them feel how it makes them feel. How does that help them discover who they are defined their meaning in life and it’s, not a field i’m acquainted with. So how many philanthropic psychologists are there? Well, i only know one of me, but i’m sure they’re so yeah, you had some of these. Have you had some campaign to systematically eliminate all the other philanthropic psychologists? Well, actually, i haven’t done so because i would rather their mohr. Okay, you not the violent academic that’s a maybe you were the the that one percent violence academic, but that’s, not you. No, i was just, um, you know, i was the first graduated philanthropic phd from the canal philanthropy. In that sense, it’s, because the field didn’t exist aren’t annoying. Okay, out of the five people that we graduated already from that program, i was the only one who had a psychology background. Okay, there’s running through your research and you’ve mentioned it just obliquely a few times i want to spend a little time on it is feeling better, feeling better about giving and and reinforcing one’s beliefs about themselves. So say, say so let’s. Talk about that. Yeah. So, for example, in this some more identity e-giving research what we did after we did the experiment on the air it’s we send donorsearch survey and we asked them on the scale one tonight. How? Carrying. Actually, you think you are and then people silk road number like seven. And then we ask them on a scale of one tonight, how ideally would you like to become caring? And then people probably circle my i really, really want to become really, really caring. And then what we did is we calculate the difference between the two each we call more identities discrepancy. And then we link this number to the same person’s contribution history to the same radio station. And what we found is that the more females give the smaller. This gap is between their actual and their ideal morally identity. But this relationship does not exist. For males. So what this means is that the act of giving itself actually can potentially help female donors to rich. They’re more ideals and that’s. Great. Yes. To teo, get closer to what they believe of themselves already. Right? Exactly. Okay, yeah. Um, again, men out. Liars. You know, they don’t care how they feel. They don’t. They don’t have feelings. I don’t know what they’re thinking. They don’t know what they’re not giving that it’s. Unbelievable. What? What a disappointing gender. Well, what they’re thinking, what they’re giving couldn’t really be measured with the set for measurements we have. So i think the next step in my research is trying to find ways where we can find what men are thinking. Right? Well, there’s the cars and sports and booze that you know it’s. Okay, um, let’s. See? So this is academic research that can be immediately applied. And tha the telemarketing part, right? I mean, so is there any reason to think that if if the organization is calling out that there would be any different result? Uh, no, actually, we way are currently conducting any marketing. I don’t have the results yet. Okay, but because we don’t think there’s any reason why it wouldn’t work so you could be calling out and thanking someone for and thank someone for having been a a friendly or kind or helpful donorsearch the past and would you consider giving this year? Is that does that? Does that sound right to you? Yeah. Yeah, but what they need to do is they make sure that thing is somehow linked two people sense of their donation or they’re being a donor and that, i think, needs to be set right before they asked people to give again. Oh, right before okay. All right. Before you right at the beginning of the park. Or, you know, without knowing anything about the donor without asking them to at least answer one question to engage. Ok. Ok. So a little engagement, but then right before the ass. This this thanking right? Using one of the five moral adjectives two out of using to okayo. Excellent. All right, so you have to use two of the five? Yeah. We never has to. Just one because we’d be bilich virality is a complicated constructs he need, you know, multiple kind of ways to get to it. Excellent. Okay, so it’s friendly and kind or whatever. Yeah, any two out of five, you know, to avoid driving, fund-raising okay, and i’m going to say them again. Okay, i understand i’m going to say them again one more time. Caring, compassionate, friendly, kind, helpful. Do not do not go to the scout law, because it will lead you astray. They’ll beam, or that aren’t on the list that then then r this is sort of suggesting that, you know, we should be not so reliant on anecdotes and tales of what good fund-raising is. But try to rely on hard research as much as possible. Yes, definitely. Absolutely. Teo, any coat? Don’t make a piece of research. Okay. Okay. Where can people learn more about your research? See about these, uh, e-giving circles. Well, let’s, let’s. Make sure everybody knows. I think i think these air pretty commonly understood, but let’s, make sure just in case what what’s e-giving circle. You know, tony basically e-giving circles really just a philanthropic vehicle where individual donors can pool their money and perhaps other resource is and really decide together where to give that pool of money away, too. So it’s a way for people to, um, to amplify their giving and really feel like even though they don’t consider themselves perhaps to be a major gift donor-centric sables them to feel like they can have a much stronger impact with their dollars in the community, and we could be talking about hundreds of thousands of dollars in grants. This is not like people chipping in five or ten bucks, but some of the giving circle gifts that i saw are really well into six figures. Oh, yes, absolutely. You know, they really do vary in size, but i would say kind of for the most part, they seem to have a minimum what i want to call entry level to be in that circle and the e-giving circles all themselves can decide what that e-giving level will be. But it is definitely, you know, an amount that’s much higher than a five or ten dollars gift level that’s for sure. Yeah, way looking into this and thinking about it makes me think of knitting circles. But it’s ah it’s different than knitting circles where well, they may be knitting things of great value, but just kind of seemed to me like, you know, the entry level would be like we said five or ten dollars. But and then some of the some of the e-giving circles, the people are quite wealthy, and they themselves are donating six figures to the circle. And then the circle is making million dollars grants. Yes, it really is fascinating. I mean, when even, you know, with the research that i did to prepare for this article, um, you know, i was looking at various places like new york times is even written on this back in november of twenty thirteen and so there’s a lot of people just google e-giving circles so they’ll find ah lot of articles have been written not only through the new york times, but the chronicle has had quite a number of articles where they focused but on this idea of e-giving circles. And so i just thought it would make an interesting discussion for ah topic for your show, because, of course, non-profits you know, they need to be aware that the circles exist and how do you come to the attention of the circles? Okay, we’re going. We’re going to come to that. And i know you’re in e-giving circle and we, um, actually i know. So we have a little extra time more than usual today, so we’re going we’ll have a chance to talk about your own experience in your giving circle. I see it looks like these air, mostly for women, not exclusively, but mostly women’s circles. They are very popular amongst women and, you know, of course, because of my own association to a group of women in a giving circle, you know, i really thought that that was just, you know, the predominance of it. But then i came across an article in the chronicle that was only done within the last year, back in july of twenty fourteen, and the article talked about how they’re also very popular amongst minorities and younger donors, so that was intriguing, you know, that goes my knitting circle analogy, right? And, you know, non-profits are forever trying to figure out how do we engage that next level of generation of donors? And how do we engage a younger pool of donors might really be a great way to do that. So you’re s o there are circles of women who are younger and guys who are younger, too. Yeah, okay, we’ll get we’ll get to that. To, um and also these circles are not onl e-giving cash there’s other levels of participation. Yeah, i mean, you know, you can decide how how in depth you want to participate in the circle. Some people would really prefer just to write their check annually and really have very little interaction with the circle. Other people want to be much more engaged in deciding how the funds will be dispersed and again e-giving circles have various ways that they decide how that’s going to happen from perhaps an annual gathering where there’s a vote taken on a very select pool of non-profits that have been filtered out bye, perhaps more of an executive committee of that e-giving circle. Or they might be coming together and meeting quarterly to try and decide on looking to fix certain things that are going wrong in their community and trying to identify well what are their non-profits that are actually addressing these issues and what seek them out and actually contribute to those organizations, and then also in terms of support to the organization, going beyond money, the mentor ship is a possibility volunteering at an organization that the circle is supporting, yes. Absolutely so. So think about, you know, the level of engagement. And perhaps the gift amounts to those circles might increase the more engaged you have that person as a volunteer within the giving circle and perhaps volunteering then for the organizations to whom wth e-giving circle contribute. So there’s, i was reading something about managerial support. Basically the the executive director of ah small non-profit that initially got a grant of fifteen thousand dollars. Then she was going on to a a larger grantcraft petition which got it, which she won for over two hundred thousand dollars and the giving circle that had initially supported her. I was giving her marketing and presentation advice for the for the pitch to the larger foundation. Yes, yes, i saw that same article. I mean, it really is fascinating how the whole thing khun really continue to have this this ripple effect. And you know, when you think about circles and then you think about the ripple effect right of ah, concentric circle. If you if you throw a a pebble into a pond, you can really see how it can have so many different ways of impacting the community and the e-giving circle itself. Yeah. It’s, it’s really interesting people are getting more involved through giving circles than just giving money and and often it’s smaller. Very often, it seems like smaller organizations that can use that extra level of help beyond just cash. Yes, absolutely. All right. Um, well, that’s that’s diving a little bit, too. What a non-profit could be doing tio discover local giving circles well, you know, certainly networking within their own communities. I think we’ve talked about this before on the show in terms of china identify major gift prospects. It’s it’s kind of that same process if you’re not out there and attending perhaps local chamber events and other events, maybe even meet up, look for meet ups where you’re going tohave on meetup dot com where you’re going tohave ah ah gathering of people like minded people around, maybe high tech ventures or real estate investors, things like that, you know, you you might come across somebody who is then, you know, talking about ah particular e-giving circle in the community. So i think you just have to get yourself out in the community and literally in front of and shaking hands with some. Of the people who are probably in these e-giving circles and without getting out there and learning about them, um, it’s going to be more difficult to find them? Of course, you know, we’ll talk during this interview about some ways to find them online as well, but there is just there’s nothing to substitute that getting out there and shaking hands and meeting people to find out who the movers and shakers are don’t think this is an interview. That’s so formal is it’s a conversation? We’re friend okay? Yeah, as our diane of dirt cheap and free, you’re a very big advocate of the local chambers of commerce groups and meetings, right? Yes, absolutely. You know, it’s it’s that that shoestring budget mentality, i suppose, um and, you know, trying to figure out how do you make the most of your time and the resources that you have available to you? Yeah. Okay, on da. All right, so you need to be out in the community. You couldn’t even be asking your existing donor and volunteer base. I mean, start with start with the people. You know, a swell is going to the broader community. But start with people who, you know, are close to the organization already asked them if they know of e-giving circles in the community, whether they remember or not. Yeah, i think this would make a great discussion as part of a board meeting. Or perhaps, why don’t you take a look at some of the websites that we’re going to be discussing today and maybe bookmarking some of them and sending them along to your board and keep volunteers and asking them if they’re aware of any e-giving circle? So not only are you going to keep your antenna up for them, but you’re going to want to, you know, bring this to the attention of of your board, um, so that they’re aware that they should be looking for these. They’re out networking in the community? Yes. Excellent. Okay, what do we have online? Wise online? Why say i found a number of things. So i found out that there was a report called connected teo give. That was done by a new organization called jump start lab. And what they were doing was they were looking to do research about giving circles and in particular, within the jewish community and as a result, they actually launched a website uh, which is called when they make sure i get the name of the website correct. And while maria simple searches for the website, well, ah, we’ll do a little tap dance on dh hope that she finds her notes very quickly on giving circles, and this is connected to give this is a place to find the connected to give report, is that right, maria? Yes, so it is. It is connected to give report, but the website itself and i’m almost there hang on one moment, though it’s called amplifier. Um, so the website is amplifier giving dot or gq, and so if we’ve got any jewish charities who are listening in on this call, this is a web site they’ll definitely want to go to because it hasn’t you have an opportunity not on ly too learn about giving circles, but there are ways to figure out how to be, how to come to the attention of them through this particular website. So again, i think it’s kind of interesting that this has this has come about for the jewish community, and i wouldn’t be surprised if we’re now going to start seeing other web sights. And this again came to my my attention through an article that i found in the chronicle. Okay, but so are you saying that site is devoted to e-giving circles for the jewish non-profits and communities? Yes, exactly. Okay, specifically. All right. Do we have one for the for the catholics? I you know what martignetti martignetti martignetti here. If i was anything, i would e should be guys like i would be eyes or anything for them. I haven’t delved into id. Let’s, let’s put it this way. I haven’t actually come across any articles that deal with this particular topic, but that would be something interesting research whether we have any more secular. Well, i’m sure you have some secular websites. Um, no, that would be the one that i would say would be most secular. But there are a number that have to do more with women’s collective e-giving. In fact, one of them is called the women’s collective e-giving grantmaker sze network. And that website is double u c g n dash network dot org’s. And they are all about women powered philanthropy. And so you actually can go. Too there’s. They actually have a map of the united states, and they actually outline, you know that the thirty eight, they call them independent collective e-giving groups, and they say that they over have over seventy, six hundred women in those particular groups. Okay, that would be an interesting website. Check out and again, that was w, c, g and hyphen, network dot or ge. Okay, let’s. Ah, marie, let’s, go out for a break. I just got a correct you on one thing. Secular, secular means it’s, it’s, not religious. So i was asking if you had other nonreligious ones, which you just get very about that’s. Okay, that’s. So see, the show is the show, it does not just fall together contrary to belief, the things things are actually planned out here, okay? Because it’s not seen mario so morris amore websites for ah, from our doi end of dirt cheap. Okay, sure. So one of the other things that i came across was a report that was done in two thousand seven. Tony, i know one of the questions that you had for me and preparing for this show was, well, exactly how many e-giving circles are there in the united states and or perhaps internationally, and you know what? How much money are they giving away? Um, so i tried to dig deep and hard to find the answer to that, and of course, it was kind of heart to catalogue all of them. But there was a study called more giving together the growth and impact of e-giving circles and shared e-giving and it was released in two thousand seven, and what they said was that as of two thousand six so you can imagine that was a number of years ago. There were four hundred catalog e-giving circles in forty four states, and ah, a lot of them had raised, you know, a lot of money they had raised at that point over eighty eight million dollars since their inception. That was nine. And that was nine years ago. Yeah, cells, i’m quite certain that it has probably grown quite a bit, but one of the sights that i was able to find that actually had giving circles listed by state is called e-giving circles dot or ge so that’s an easy one to remember. Okay? And you can actually look state by state and try and find those particular e-giving circles. So i think it be great for the non-profits listening on this tio two checks us out because not only do they list, um, state by state, but they do have a couple of global e-giving circles listed here as well. Um, a lot of them are actually based in the u s, but they’re e-giving they’re focused on giving is international. Yeah, okay, excellent for international. But but you also want to be paying attention to the ones that maybe in your own, much closer to you in your own community vicinity with e-giving exactly e-giving circle e-giving circles dunaj i’m based in new jersey, for example, and i see that there are three listed here, the one that i’m part of is not even listed on here. So mom it’s the one that i’m part of it not listed on here, you can imagine there are probably, you know, a number of others that aren’t listed here as well. I can’t imagine that i and i know for sure that there are at least there’s mine and another chapter called i think it’s called impact one hundred, based in new jersey that are not even listed on here, so they probably have not even been able to compile every single one of them, even on this website. Either that or you’re living in some kind of a fantasy world, some kind of e-giving circle fantasy world where you imagine these circles around you, but they don’t really exist, and sometimes they overlap. But you wouldn’t know if you were in that fantasy world, so well, i’ll give you the benefit of doubt since i know you will presume that that’s, not the case. I will assume i should say we’ll assume that that’s not the case. Uh, all right. So so it’s even more than they list, but they’re not keeping up. They’re not keeping up to date. You got to get your own circle listed. Well, that that’s? Yeah. That’s part of my purpose. And i came across this research i thought always gotta get are listed here. Um, how would you recommend approaching? And we’ll get a yeah. You know, you could bring in some of your own experience to, but how would you recommend approaching these giving circles? They may and may not have websites or, you know, they don’t have program officers. How do you, uh, how you gonna get in there once you find them? I think. It’s, you know, it depends on the e-giving circle itself. Some might have a more formal website and process maybe even a grant application process for approaching them. Others, if you can at least find out who perhaps some of the people are that are kind of heading up. That e-giving circle. You can go the lincoln route, right? Why not? Try and make a connection with them on lincoln and have that turn into a cup of coffee to discuss you know what your non-profit is doing and letting that giving circle know that their particular mission that they’ve outlined happens to coincide with thie services and programs that your particular non-profit provides. How would you get to the membership? The names? How how is that possible? Well, some of them actually will have website, and then through that they’ll be usually in about us link so so think of it is researching a foundation, for example, where you confined, you know who the contact person is to reach out to if you were going to be submitting a grant application and so forth. But if they don’t have any way to contact through the website, i’m sure you could probably at least find a name of a person connected and again, just google that name, and you’re very likely to come up to, at minimum there lengthen profile, okay? And then this is where the board could be helpful, too. Even if you’re not able to find a name of a member, if you can least find the name. Of the circle, as you suggested earlier, you could float that to your board say, you know not just do you know of any circles in the area, but we’ve identified a couple here’s the ones we can’t find any of the members or here’s a couple member names we did find, you know, can you help us out in any other case? Yeah, yeah, you got a cz you’ve suggested before with with prospect research using using your boards networks? Absolutely. And, you know, one of the other things that i thought would be interesting because one of the reports that i read actually alluded to this is why not have as a non-profit why not launch your own e-giving circle, right? So you probably have somewhat of a form of this already, but this could be another interesting e-giving vehicle for your non-profit so you might be calling it something like a e-giving society right now, and you know it, maybe just changing the language around it. Um, do people want to belong to societies? Where do they want to belong to circles? There’s, there’s definitely a different connotation, i think. And and maybe you want to have both i don’t know, but i think it be kind of interesting for a non-profit to se gi, you know, i’ve done some research, i’m not finding any e-giving circles that we can approach in our community, so, you know, let’s, consider launching our own and coming up with that minimum gift amount that it would take to join that giving circle, and then what are the parameters around? What will membership in that giving circle include if we start this at our organization, i think that could be on effective way to start a new, major gift giving level in the year twenty fifteen for the non-profits on the call, okay? Ah, well, you and i are calling you know, they’re listening all different methods, but i’m, um i’m mincing, i’m being quibbling with you? Um, yeah, now interesting. Ah, okay, you’re kind of conflating what are typically called recognition societies with what we’re talking about giving circles that is that that’s sort of what you’re doing? Yeah, i mean, you could certainly start your own and, you know, try and find out well, what are some of what they’re actually guide? Um, that particular website that i mentioned amplifier they’ve actually got some really terrific resource is on there, even though this is meant for the jewish community. There’s still a lot of great resource is on that site that i came across a lot of great downloads that talk about how to start e-giving circle, what are some of the, you know, guidelines that you want to put around the circle? Here’s a sample letter that you can send out letting people know that e-giving circle has been started, so they did. I would say that that is going to be a really good resource, regardless of whether you’re in the jewish e-giving space, because you’re going to be able to garner a lot of free resource is right there in creating your own giving circle through your non-profit let’s, let’s, talk a little about your own experience what’s the name of your new jersey e-giving circle so i’m part of one that is part of united way of northern new jersey. They have women’s leadership council, and through that we have the leadership e-giving circle, which entails a one thousand dollars annual commitment tooth e-giving circle and like any good major gift level. Ah, uh, donation. You can actually spread that out throughout the year. You can attach it to a credit card and so forth. So it is definitely a way to get people in the circle if you can break it down for them in that way. Because you said and that’s the one part of you said yours is a women’s only circle. Is that right? Yes. That’s correct. Why’s. That why’s that, i suppose, uh, i mean, i was born in new jersey. Suppose i wanted to join that or some other man, but i like to use me as an example. Center of the universe. Um, suppose i wanted to join what? On what basis would you reject me? You know what? We probably wouldn’t reject any man. Now i need it just happens to be the name of of the order. You know, the organization and that that united way it’s set up. They have women’s leadership councils all across the united states. Um, i have not attended any of the events and so forth outside of my own region, but i’m quite certain they probably do have some men connected, you know, at various levels. Um, i know that. We had an event recently where we did have and very much welcomed a man teo, join us in a small event that we had to go and, um all right, well, that’s encouraging, i’m glad i’m glad he was very much welcomed. Also, uh, how does your circle decide what organization organizations it’s going to support each year? So when we launched, it was about it was just under five years ago, we decided that we would focus on getting women more financially stable and an education being a way to do this, but we’re actually partnering up with the local community college here, the raritan valley community college and their educational foundation, so through that were able to help what we’re calling the nontraditional student with some gap funding. So the colleges, perhaps providing the scholarship assistance and so forth, and we’re providing some of the gaps funding needs that that particular student might have that’s going to hamper their ability to complete that educational process. So it’s typically in a lot of cases, it’s, the single mother returning to school for education and looking and has perhaps, you know, want at least one child at home and is looking to yet get some additional funding in place to make that education happens. No might might mean child care or whatever, whatever it takes. Your circle then is only supporting the raritan valley community college well within win women’s leadership council in northern new jersey were connected with a number of community colleges. Also centenary college in north west new jersey. So that’s, the way that were structured is is partnering up with a community college and college is focused around the topic of education, economic, that specific, that specific issue. Now we have just like a minute and a half left or so. How often does your circle meat we meet? Probably on average quarterly throughout the year, and then we stay in touch through email the rest of the time. How do you decide which of the colleges you’re going to make grants to? And we just have about a minute left maria again. It’s very localized here in somerset county were were partnered up with already raritan valley college, so that that was decided pretty early on in the e-giving circle history, okay? And the larger organization is supporting other community college is not your not your individual circle. Okay, right. But circles can decide toe support. Multiple charities. Certainly that’s. He’s, a practitioner in residence at the stanford university center on philanthropy and civil society and was named non-profit times influencer of the year in twenty fourteen that’s that’s old news we’re going to this year that’s right of resting on laurels already yesterday’s man he’s, executive director of the ninety second street y still does that in new york city, which is a very big y, very big cultural institution. Really. In new york city, you’ll find giving tuesday. At giving tuesday dot or ge and he is at h tim’s t i double m s many times welcome to studio. Well, it’s, great to be here. I’m a big fan and i really appreciate everything you do for the sector. Thank you, it’s, our it’s. My pleasure. I love giving back teo non-profits on dh this is how we do it. Yeah, um, you have a lot to say about the premise that power is shifting say something. S so one of the things we’ve been thinking about a bit is, and i think this is true of giving tuesday, but also true more widely of some of the things i’m going to get to that, of course, doing in the uae is the way in which we were all thinking really carefully about how technology is changing, right? So we’re thinking about how we should get digital people on board and how we should make sure we understand twitter, but but i think something deeper is actually happening, which isn’t actually superficially about how technology is changing, but really how human being is changing. And we just put together a paper for hbr with my colleague jeremy. Heimans last month, which is really around this idea that the shift we should be anticipating isn’t about how technology changes, but how power to changes on that power is shifting from a model that you can think on his old power, which is very much about command and control, and downloading on your audiences to a model is really about new power, a new powers, really, about engagement, about participation on about theory around upload about how you really engage on it seems to me especially we think about the non-profit world that shift, which is from you, talking out audiences and telling them what they should care about, too. You actually engaging your communities to get behind the cause you care about is going to be a pivotal issue for us for the next decade on i want to include a link to that harvard business review article way posed toe takeaways on facebook, so i’ll i’ll make sure link is they’re not great, i won’t listen, we just we just launched this is that? Is that legal you presented to me, your incoherent? You’re in good shape, actually in a very in a very new power away. Harvard business review has actually start opening up their content a lot. Mohr to make it much more terrible on we’d love some reactions from the nonprofit sector because it’s a it’s a new idea, i think it could be valuable, and we’d love to know what people think. And that article was just last month. Yeah, it was the big idea in the december issue that you had to do something going out of your being non-profit influencer of the year, you had to end on a high note, but of course, now the now you have something more to do in twenty fifteen. Yeah, the from that article you know some of the new power values informal open source collaboration, radical transparency. Do it yourselves, you know, vs the traditional managerial ism institutional ism holding power, not not sharing content and knowledge. Yeah, i think the the one frame that we’ve used to kind of to simplify the idea is thinking about power less as a currency on maura’s a current so how is power? Not something that i own and xero some. But how is it? How is it a current? How does it build? How does it grow, and i think that idea for the nonprofit sector is so important, especially we think about fund-raising because i think we’re entering a period where we are trying to shift from a mentality where we think about donors, right? We have our old power donors, so when we get them to give us money, but the cause is who we’re going to really win won’t have donors, they’ll have owners will have people who actually are completely believing in their cause and getting behind it, and you only need to look at something like a recipe for ice bucket challenge, which really wasn’t about donors. It was about owners, it was about people who really believed they were the agents of change. I think that idea is a very big idea for the future. I had the ceo of a less on to recap buy-in in september, october something i just they’re going twelve tremendous learning from that. And actually, one thing i read from your twitter feed was a fund-raising expert who had written a complaint that she had sent eight checks toe organizations for year end and two months later, five them and yeah, she’s i think it’s at the-whiny-donor think that’s the i’m not even sure if the man or a woman i don’t know if the person won’t reveal themselves just at whiny donor-centric ember eight checks issue to most later three of them for them hadn’t sent think yes, that’s a donor not on owner comps pair that to something like a less where you have people who are literally the stars of the show that shift is going is going to be, i think, monumental for our sector and i love the metaphor of power because power is not has no value unless it’s flowing, yeah, that’s, right? And the new model is it’s flowing out in terms? I mean, i think of myself, you know, four years ago i had been a content i mean, there have been a host of a show now now i’m a content creator on dh that on that trend is only going to continue, and the way i think we need to think about it is not in terms ofthe the technological bias, right, which is most non-profit you see this problem, lunge a twitter right? So they suddenly think i better get on twitter. And this problem will go away is really not about that it’s actually, about you thinking about how you enlist people in a very human way to get behind the things you care about. The big new power challenge, i think, is getting the non-profit sector to shift in that direction. And how is giving tuesday an example of this new power shift? Well, i think in in two ways one in its design. So we we started giving tuesday at the ninety second street y, but it was never the ninety second street wise giving tuesday, right? The old power model would have been it’s, the ninety second street wise, giving tuesday. We spent all of our time making sure we got a lot of media and a lot of credit for it. And it would have probably affected people two blocks to the north and two blocks to the south and that’s as far as it would have gone. But we deliberately said it needed to be open source. That giving tuesday needs to be non branded by anybody. Which means that anyone from the red cross to the night, second street why? To the fourteenth street? Why? Teo, people in the uk but take the same theme and respond to it. And that was a very new power idea, which was it’s really not about command and control, but actually creating tools for people to engage exactly and that’s what you see when you goto e-giving tuesday dot or ge there’s a whole bunch of sharing tools, there’s videos explaining what what charity’s could have done, what you could do have to get involved. It’s, it’s, it’s empowering the sector and sharing enormously we’re on the story, i think which doesn’t get told often, which i think is important is that this was not all right. This was not our phrase. Someone described giving tuesday as a shared learning environment and actually because of giving tuesday hours and hours of free resources, always free have been created for the non-profits actor, i’m a friend of my marian salzman, who is one of the world’s leading expert in marketing and pr did a special webinar specifically about how how did you hyper local targeting for non-profits right? She is one of the most sought after experts in the country, but she’s providing that for the sector. Andi, i think as we move forward with giving tuesday how we can use it to help the sector learn together us most of all right, how we can all learn together is going to be the story which no one will write about, but i think it’s probably gonna be the most influential one let’s go out for a couple minutes when we come back. You had these obviously had this power shift ideas, how do we get this thing started? So we were thinking, you know, the night second street wise community centre, what we spend our days thinking about is how you bring people together and that’s what we’ve done for one hundred forty years, and we were thinking, especially around the holidays, you know, about black friday, you know, about cyber monday, consumer oriented america’s wallets are open, wouldn’t it make sense that the non-profit world is a part of that conversation? So the initial idea, which was black friday cyber monday e-giving tuesday and so it began with a team of the why, but then what began to happen, which i think we learned a lot from was it wasn’t just the leaders of the white who were working on this, but actually people from lots of different organizations. So some people from stanford university, from the economist from facebook, most of all, from the u n foundation, who actually formed a team of lots of different leaders and experts to kind of frame the idea to shape it, to start rolling it out on we kind of got on with the year one and we you know what? Just two and a half years ago, which seems unbelievable. The first e-giving tuesday was which your tio two thousand eleven? So we thought this was giving tuesday three we’re done three of them now, and we launched it with seventy days to go. And it really caught on the first year more than we thought it would. And that really gave us a chance to start thinking a bit more carefully about what this is, how it can be helpful to the sector most of all to learn. I really think it’s important with giving tuesday to think this is very early on in a project, right? This is we’ve done this for less than three years. The real question is going to be, i think, two or three years out, when we start to see the kind of scale we can get to in the kind of depth of impact we can reach. But that’s where it began, it began with an idea about collaboration, especially one of the things in the nonprofit sector. We all suffer from andi. I run a non profit, so i understand this is we all want to raise money for ourselves, right? We were always fighting against each other to some degree. We wanted to experiment with this idea that actually, there could be a tide that helps lift all ships. That was one of the driving ideas behind giving tuesday. I’ve had honest asia dellaccio on from the u n foundation she’s trouble a year and a half or two years ago, talking about giving tuesday she’s tremendous she’s one of the you know, she’s one of those people actually are who i think represents a new generation of leader that that kind of millennial voice who is so deeply committed to changing the world but also is so savvy on some of these new power tools, right? She’s someone who really gets how the world is changing, i’m not sure that’s true, more broadly in the nonprofit sector, i think that’s one of the big challenges that we think about a lot, which is how how is a sector? Can we make this turn as quickly as some other industries are? You can follow anesthesia because she owns shows. Owns a gelato company in washington, dc, and she is at dull ci d o l c i t sweet gelato is what it translates to, but dellaccio gelati is onstage dellaccio how did e-giving tuesday do in twenty fourteen third year? So i thought we saw some really positive progress. We had twenty thousand partners take twenty thousand? Yeah, you know where they got out of the states that there’s amglobal there’s some global numbers in there too. So people around the world on dh i think we made a really important we can talk about the numbers in a minute, which i know is where the conversation always ends up, but i thought something else happened, which was important, which was we made a statement about shared values with the driving idea behind giving tuesday when it began wasn’t immediately how can we run up the score in terms of dollars? It was much more about saying at a time when we are reaching the end of the year, we’re thinking about what we’re grateful for with entering the season of giving how can we actually start a bigger conversation about caring for other people? Because philanthropy, of course, is the ultimate expression of that it’s the ultimate expression of caring for more people. So i think the biggest win with giving tuesday in my mind last year, was what it demonstrated was the power off of really hundreds of thousands of people around the world to pause at a time off consumption and understand really unruly, underline how much they wanted to give back to others. She started to see a cultural shift, i think that’s right? I think that’s the hope, i think that’s the hope that actually you khun galvanize that and i think the great hope for giving tuesday a time when so much divides us so often the idea that something which can bring together people in all fifty states, all different backgrounds, all different levels of diversity or different political beliefs, if we can come together around the most human act, which is carrying from one another, i think that’s a really important idea, but i won’t dodge the question, which is about the money. Yeah, we’ll get to that. But it’s a beautiful, you know, unless somebody collapse wednesday. I don’t know what will happen with wednesday, but you know, it’s, beautiful book and thanksgiving and then and you didn’t mention small business saturday, of course, nor to another support your local small business and endeavor way have a conversation year one one of the smartest investors in entrepreneurs in new york who’s an adviser of ours, i said, leave it for a year, you haven’t got you haven’t got the plans together, don’t do it like seventy days, way launch quick, but they’re one of the main reasons for that was i was pretty convinced someone was going to grab tuesday. I actually thought what was never speaking to happen was on the back of black friday and cyber monday there would be another, whatever you know, lt was coming. Thank you, thank your customers tuesday or whatever it wants, so i actually thought it was important we try and grab it for the philanthropic sector. All right? Did you hear rumors or was just was the universe talking to you that way? I think it was an instinct. I think it was. It was an instinct instinct. I i admire instinct enormously. I don’t often kick myself if i if i don’t follow it. But then also the book end. So, you know, you think thanksgiving and giving tuesday book ending these consumption days in the middle? I you know, i i admire the idea well on the other it’s checking things out, the other thing we thought was important, and actually, this was an idea off matthew bishop, so the economist who who’s, a really obviously leading thinker in the flandez piece based he was always pushing us hard from the start on saying this should be the opening day of the giving season, right? So the giving season has a very big clothes the last three days of the year, but it doesn’t really have an opening on obviously, december is the most important month for a lot of non-profits toe raise funds and awareness and volunteering, so that was always a framing idea for giving tuesday, and we’ve seen some pretty interesting data on that point. Okay, numbers, terms of dollars charities. So thie the case foundation working with indiana university, did a good sample of a lot off the main online processes, and they’re counting around forty six million dollars from a group, often not all of them but a group of processes online there’s also, of course, a lot of offline money coming in to and there’s a lot of volunteering hours on other activations around giving choosy that we think is important, but the number which the press is always going to get his forty six million yeah, the dollars given, but yeah, the volunteering i mean that that dovetails with the shift that you’re the cultural shift that you were seeing that e-giving i also think, yeah, broader definition. I also think there’s something which people are doing well, which is using giving tuesday, is an on ramp for people to have longer relationships, so the people actually using giving tuesday is the start of something and then driving it through the whole of december or doing a match campaign for all of december, or pushing people towards, for example, recurring e-giving e-giving toothy is also mally just a notch, right? So it’s a moment, and if we could make it a very big nudge, i think it can be very powerful, but it is pushing a lot of people in the same direction to take philantech be just that bit more seriously, and then our job. Is non-profits is to grab their attention and turn into something sustainable? Yes, and and i think some of the critics don’t i don’t know, maybe they’re not crediting non-profits with recognizing that that it’s just a start or they don’t feel that it’s that that that’s going to happen, you know, there are some who say that it’s just taking giving from some other some of the day and transplanting it to this day. It’s yeah, i mean, i was master that yeah, i think it’s important, it’s important to think about that and the data we’ve seen so far don’t perfect. Did a good survey of there are quite a decent sample size of their organizations and actually found those organizations participating in giving tuesday. We’re doing twice as well online in all of december grayce was powerful and then the real one of people i listen too. We all listen to a lot on these ideas that steve mclaughlin a blackboard on dh he really has a strong view, which i think is right about the importance of us not fearing scarcity in the nonprofit sector, where we kind of have this oliver complex that we tremble. As we ask for mohr on dh and actually i think what the data shows is asking is, what leads you to getting money? The critique then e-giving choose which i think is is important to address is then, is it just in the moment? Right? So people think, is it one and done? I think that’s a reasonable concern, but again, i think what you’re seeing with giving tuesday is those organizations who are really winning big of those who have seen this in a very strategic and comprehensive way that bringing people on board and then they’re working out ways to keep them a comprehensive way. It’s not a day it’s it’s part of your overall strategy on dh bringing people, and then you have a responsibility to keep them engaged and invested. Wait, we are often say around the office that you know if e-giving is is a marriage e-giving tuesday’s the anniversary, right? So this should be going all year round, but this is a special day to engage on. I’ll give you one example of that which was very powerful, i thought from this year so the university of michigan they took giving tuesday they turned into giving blue day, right? So they talk they remix very new power idea, which which was remixing the concept to make you more relevant to them. It’s making more about them less about us, they turn it into giving flu did they set themselves a big goal, which is a million dollars to raise. And they caught everyone from their alums to the students, to the president or working via social media to dr money online. Their goal was a million. They made three point four million dollars on the day, which was mohr than they were ever making on the last day of the year. But much more importantly than the dollar figure, they made a statement about value. They actually got these the shift i was talking about earlier, which is shifting people from donors to owners. They didn’t just raise three point four million dollars. They brought a whole community to be their fund-raising team that’s the big idea, i think around giving tuesday very good. This is why i love this is a podcast because people can now go back and listen to that last sentence that you just said. Donors toe owners a bigger volunteer community helping sustained that sustain the movement you know all the fund-raising data says the same thing, which is the most powerful way you can get a gift is if a friend asks for it, right? What does facebook? Facebook is an entire ecosystem off friends and friends and friends. It is the biggest fund-raising force in the history of mankind, and no one has begun to tap that yet and again, lots of tools for using giving tuesday in your lorts much larger plan at e-giving tuesday dot org’s so it shouldn’t be intimidated by this idea now that’s, right? And the other thing we’ll do throughout the year, we always have a bit of a break, but actually one thing we’ll do throughout the year launching in sort of february march is very regular seminar’s webinars best practices will do sessions about campaigns that worked really well. We’ll do sessions about campaigns that didn’t work so well, but what we’re going to really try and do is make sure that we learn from giving tuesday because i think we as a community are often jumping to verdicts. This is tremendous, this is awful. The truth is always more nuanced, and we we as we enter this new power world with so many of the dynamics, are changing. And a time when so many of our behaviors are based on old power principles. Our willingness to engage with real change is so important, and, i hope giving choose. They can play a small role in that. Now, another challenge is you’ll see that people will take the dollar amount raised e-giving tuesday and divided by the number of charities and say the average was somewhere around three thousand dollars. Or if they’re being generous, sometimes they’ll up. The numbers could account for under reporting, and they’ll maybe, say, six thousand dollars for charity. Is that, you know, is it is it worth the effort? Well, i mean, i think if you talk to a lot of non-profits in this country, six thousand dollars is a huge amount of money for a lot of non-profits that really makes a big difference because many of the non-profits they’re small, they have small budgets and they’re doing incredibly important work, so i think i think we should always be careful, especially larger organizations, to discount the importance of small amounts of money, smaller amounts of money. I think i’d say something else, too, which is if you had said, i’ve found the way to get twenty thousand organizations or ten thousand organizations avectra six thousand dollars, people would probably think that’s quite a good thing in the world, so i think to we can build on that we can grow that number, but i still think that the i don’t think i have to be able to prove this, i expect, but i think the mohr maur, the bigger contribution of giving tuesday isn’t going to be just a dose of the dollar amount, which i think will grow, i think it will actually be about how it encourages people to try new things and actually what? I was interested this year in what i saw my end of year, i got asked obviously i gots listed for end of year from a lot of organizations i didn’t see very much creativity in that at all. I saw a lot of people saying it’s the last day of the year, but give me some money with giving tuesday i saw a lot more creativity. I saw a lot more engagement on a really interesting statistic from blackboard they saw seventeen percent one seven percent of the money coming in via mobile, right seventy seven buy-in mobile this is a very different idea for us. A sector on dh there was a really interesting article this week about how much trouble, how much over challenge non-profit sector is having in adopting mobile in a meaningful way and if you look at any of the trend data on what mobile is going to do, tow our organization’s it’s going to be exponential changed for years. So again, i hope what we could do with giving twosies actually shift the mindset, teo encourage a lot more learning a lot. More entrepreneurialism and then ultimately why we’re in this is a lot more impact. There was criticism of blackbaud also because they have some self interest, they they make money as people give through the mobile platform of theirs, which is a very popular i mean, that’s been there’s been a critique writ large off of all of the kind of different operators, and of some of the giving days all of these things, which is what is the role for commercial benefit in some of these sectors? I have to say, i think some of the more powerful arguments here are thinking about the level of quality that they can bring to the sector on what that value is two non-profits on someone like blackbaud who actually think, add so much value for non-profit that is really worth something, and i would say, is someone running a non-profit i would take that kind of investment very seriously. You just mentioned, you know, trying something different, and i i’m a huge fan and see i have the beauty of not being a journalist, so i don’t have to be oh, fan of giving tuesday and basically, i say, fuck the critics. Because, you know, we see so much. The sector sent to be very tend to be very critical of itself. I think ice bucket challenge was an example that harsh critics not giving the organization of chance, and then you also see so many people they want to encourage innovation on a lot of times i see it on twitter through mahatma gandhi or maya angelou quotes, you know, be the change you want in the world think global act locals think big, small you shook things up, you know? You started something that has enormous potential and so far hasn’t fallen on its face. Let’s give the damn thing a chance, you’re shaking things up, and so i hope the critics recognize that well, i pride probably would not share the language but share some of the sentiments. Which thing? I think the thing i think more about actually we’ve heard this from giving tuesday often is the twenty three year old person who’s just joined your non-profit who’s caught some big ideas and doesn’t feel empowered to try them time and again. Actually, what we heard about giving tuesday was, well, we gave this project to the intern on the intern, then delivered sameh zing. Results on actually, i think, that’s the our capacity to try new things, to be bold, to be ambitious. I think that capacities the most important idea, and i think the critics looked ideas like this should have critics they should have constructed. That ecosystem is good for the world, but i do think i would draw a line at the point in which we are fearful of innovation, right that’s, a very different idea, and i think our fear of innovation as a sector is going to hold us back more than almost anything outstanding. Thank you. Where you calling from? Yui san francisco today i’m actually in washington d c today your dc ah you with the fourth sector conference, right? Exactly right. Great chances. Okay. What is this? Fourth sector? This fourth dimension we have to deal with. Well, oftentimes the non-profit sectors thought of as the third sector. Independent sector and there’s. This new sort of class of organizations that are coming out. Some of them are for-profit. Some of them are non-profits, and they’re commonly referred to as social enterprises or for benefit organizations. And they’re kind of this diverse class of organizations that shared two main characteristics. And one is that they are primarily driven by social and door, environmental purpose. And two they earned a substantial portion of their income through earned revenues or business activities. Social or environmental is where you see most of them. Is that right? That’s? Right, danny? Okay. Ah, and what forms of organization are they are they take it so you’ll see many of them is existing non-profits and these have been around for a long time. So goodwill is an example of an organisation, social or charitable purpose, but derive a substantial portion of their income through earned revenues. Um, the national geographic society is another great example of ah, non-profit which actually has a bunch of for-profit subsidiary in affiliate organizations as well all structured together, you know, seen as part of this fourth sector comprised of both non-profits and for-profit that are really looking at earned revenue is the primary way to make money and not just relying ondo native incomes a little bit different from what you and henry we’re talking about, but involving some of the same people was interesting that henry mentioned matthew bishop from the economist who is the one who sort of popularized the term philantech row philantech rabbo capitalism, our philantech xero capitalism and basically looking at this fourth sector idea on dh, he mentioned the case foundation, which is tracking the giving tuesday funds that were raised, i’m sorry. Ah, and the challenge funds our raised and the case foundation are really strong proponents of impact investments and its port sector in backto jean k c e o of the case foundation was there at that gathering, the what we’re seeing is that these fourth sector organizations sabat can very well be taking our are taking money from what? What henry would call the traditional power and values charities. Yeah, i think there’s there’s a big trend going on and there’s quite a bit of competition that a lot of non-profits especially traditional non-profits may not be aware of, and i kind of wanted to talk a little bit more about about that competition because i think it’s really something that non-profits have to be aware of, um, they’re big movements right now of money of talent, of business that they’re going to for-profit that see themselves as social enterprises, many of them that are very true and sincere about their driving, their social purposes, but some of them out there who are sort of posing as these social enterprises but really, after a new market and in you niche. Teo generate as much profit as they can, so trying to distinguish between those who are really social enterprises in those who might just being bailing themselves and that the guys is really important, okay, let’s, well, we’ll come to making sure you’re dealing with a bona fide social benefit enterprise. Another concern are just around the competition. I just want to make this clear that that corporation money can go in this direction as well. Yeah, and, you know, while i mentioned examples of non-profit social enterprises before in goodwill and national geographic, there’s there plenty of for-profit competitors out there already and where competition for funds is is already existing. And, for example, there’s, a very popular charity right now called cuba, but keep it facilitates a lot of donors to be able to make loans to small micro businesses and developing nations, and and also they started in the united states as well for disadvantaged communities so people can go on the keepers site and make these micro loans to these businesses. But those are not donations those air loans that you’re making, you don’t get a charitable deduction for making that loan to another individual. Oh! Our group of individuals, you’re funding a business basically through alone. Crowdfunding often has seen the same way some crowdfunding is done by non-profits, but primarily it’s driven by for-profit, many of which are pursuing social names. But individuals, rather than may be making a donation to charity, are starting to find crowdfunding, a project that may or may not be charitable crowd funding projects and making loans to micro enterprises through cuba, which are not charitable donations. And this is you believe, ah, a recognizable portion of this is what would have been terrible money. Yeah, and i’m not saying that that’s a bad thing at all on dh, you’ll see proponents of the port sector and and i’m a big fan of what’s what’s happening, although again distinguishing between the real ones and the not real ones is important. It is just knowing that that that competition is out there and it’s going to drive non-profits or it should be driving non-profits to compete by showing impact, demonstrating impact, going after these big entrepreneurial goals that the social enterprises go after and seem to attract a lot of money doing so. And, you know, i’ve been talking about individual donations, which some people might think of more smaller potatoes, although obviously the ellis challenge showed you how much can be raised through those means think about organizations like google and their commitment tio, you know, donate one percent of their profits, too, doing a social good? Well, most of that donation that heavy bulk of that donation is not non-profits and one percent of google revenue that’s a lot of money or hate dunaj you know, most of them are thine google bone initiatives and corporate money may be going to their own community see csr or corporate social responsibility goals rather than going teo corporate sponsorships to charity foundation grant was going to be going to the social enterprises as well, because there’s this attraction out there that a for-profit social enterprise, i can create a sustainable source of income to continue doing it social good. And so once he set up the infrastructure for which you might foundation might give grant money, you don’t have to keep giving grants to these organizations because they’re letting the market forces then create the sustainable business, getting underserved communities like impoverished areas with goods and services that otherwise would not go there. All right, corporation money. We see foundation money, individual and with respect to the individual e-giving there’s, something called sector agnosticism that you’ve blogged about. I wanted to explain sure. So the general idea that individuals, donors thunders are all becoming are trending. I should say, i shouldn’t say this is the majority view point yet, but there’s certainly trending uh towards being sector agnostic in that if we want to solve a particular problem, whether it’s getting water to people who otherwise would not be ableto access clean water, or get people to reduce recidivism in person coming out of prison, nor drug abuse flooring that a lot of people are saying well, traditional charities kind of continues to put the bandage on you. No problem and that’s super important to help the people who are currently suffering, but maybe not doing enough to cure that problem. That social problem, which is a huge, huge challenge, and i don’t know that non-profits deserved to be criticized for that very much, but some for, you know, proponents of the fourth sector thing will for-profit can come in, and their health is really needed in order to actually make a big dent in these problems, and they’re looking at it from a slightly different way, and i think all players they’re needed here, i think, government, these fourth sector organizations, i think, traditional businesses that are just after port, you know, profits as well. It’s got to be thinking about this, because consumers now are you gonna buy, and we’re going to start to see this more and more back-up those companies that are doing something about the problems in the world, and not just making much money as they can and the sector agnosticism is people are not really caring what form of organization they’re giving to, or investing in a cz long as they’re seeing impact. Yeah, absolutely. And thank youfor summarizing attorney, that that was really well put, okay? We don’t need you to wait some time. Okay? So we definitely need you. Takagi i take that back. You guys were in that guys are in touch. You know how much he admires your work. Okay, you mentioned it a couple times distinguishing between imposters and bona fide social benefit organizations. Yes, i mean that’s one of the big challenges out there because everybody khun say that they have a social purpose and if you just allow any business itself declare itself is socially good. That could be, you know, a problem for the community going well, we’re going to buy their products because they say they’re good. And they’re commercial look really great. Well, that isn’t enough, and maybe some laws or policies can help in that direction. And maybe that is why we’ve seen the advent of the so called high braider alternative forms of corporations that take on some of the characteristics of non-profits and that they have some sort of social purpose involved but are still for-profit taxable organizations with shareholders who khun get dividends and distributions and make a lot of money to companies succeed. So it’s kind of that in between place more for-profit than non-profit i would say, but there’s a spectrum of how charitable they khun b and for that reason we’ve seen things like the benefit corporation. Some people call it the beat corporation, which is slightly different and all explain the difference in just a second, but social purpose corporation on the low profit, limited liability company or the altri see those air, the three big new types of legal corporate form that we’re seeing in different states. So if you want to partner with an organization, you should be looking for one that is designated in one of these ways. Well, that may be a sign, so it’s one of the signs and we’re in very, very new ground here, they’ve only been sort of developed and created over the last six or seven years, and the benefit corporations now are almost or in about half of the states right now after being first introduced about three or four years ago, i think in maryland first, so it’s going to be very, very interesting to see where where these organizations go, but there are other indicators as well of possible good partners for non-profits that are not just disguising themselves as a socially purposed organizations and that’s just to really that their activities and their purpose statements and their governing documents and see what they’re all about and take a look at their ownership structure and their board of directors does he woulda non-profit grantee to see if you can find out a little bit more about the for-profit and the big corp certification. Jean hold on the different from benefit corporation, but it’s called they’re often both called b corpse that be corpses or certified b corp is this good housekeeping type of seal of approval that is given by this independent nonprofit organization called b? Lap. And so if you meet their criteria, social good and it’s, a fairly rigorous test, and you have to be subject yourself to potential audits from the organization as well, so they can check that years you’re walking the walk and not just talking the talk. I think it’s, the honest company, those are certified, be corporations, and may make for great partners as well, because you have this outside entity that’s, creating these independent standards of what it is to be a social enterprise and certifying those organizations. I imagine partnership is a possibility, yeah, absolutely, and they’re keeping that, you know, i think that are important for non-profits one is recognizing that there is some competition out there on dh there trends out there like sector gnosticism from donors and servants, purchasers and good purchasers that we talked about understanding the fraction of why social enterprises can be attractive tease individuals also really important in understanding the marketplace, and i think some non-profits haven’t done a sufficient job of understanding, not just the market of their beneficiaries that they provide services and goods to understanding the marketplace of donors and supporters and job seekers and potential board members, and knowing what they do have to do to compete for those things as well. Okay, so but let’s, let’s talk about let’s talk about potentially partnering with dahna a social benefit enterprise? Sure, and they’re different different sorts of partnerships that might be possible. So if, for example, you find a for-profit business out there that says, i, you know, let’s partner together so we can run a business using leveraging your goodwill in the community because you non-profit of god, you know, great donors and supporters, and that would really help our business. So why don’t we do something together? We’ll sell more goods and make more money for a business, but we’ll also give you a percentage of our sales, uh, in exchange for using your goodwill and and marketing together. And some of that some people will call that cause related marketing a commercial commercial. Co venturing is the term that would get me and drug in jail, i think, but those those air, the terms that indicate that sort of partnership where the for-profit leverages the non-profits goodwill on dh the non-profit benefits by getting a percentage of the sales, and you see that all over the place, right? Of course, yeah. All right, so if you can’t, you can’t beat the for-profit social enterprises, perhaps you can join them apartment and i think american express to you that this several years ago when they were on redoing the statue of liberty, and then they were raising money together that way, that that benefited both the for-profit in the non-profit so that’s that’s one way that non-profits and for-profit have done he’s partnership, if you will, for a long time. But there are all sorts of other types of relationships that are possible between non-profits and for-profit, and they can become very program specific. So if you have a nen stints of delivering water, teo communities that don’t have clean water, for example it’s very possible that either one type of entity one non-profit or one for-profit would not be the best at doing that alone, and forming partnerships with other organisations is and that’s a scary way to make that service delivery effective and efficient, and if we’re talking about that that that tends to happen more internationally, although sometimes with disaster relief, like with hurricane katrina, those could be issues domestically as well. On an everyday level, if we’re thinking about delivering food to people getting corporations, fruit corporations involved in that khun b completely beneficial toe both entities involved, particularly if you’ve got a for-profit social enterprise that really isn’t about maximizing profits, some social enterprises out there that are for-profit so they have owners are businesses that are willing to break even, and they may not even be willing to take any profit. They might take a reasonable salary like you would it a non-profits but their owners hey, you know, are model doesn’t sit in five twenty three because we’re engaged in commercial activities, but we’re actually not going to take any profit from it. We just want to make sure the services get delivered way just have about a minute left, jane ana, i want to talk about impact because you mentioned it earlier and it’s another way that non-profits can react to this trend that his new competition showing the riyadh and competition out there the for-profit social enterprises and some of the non-profit social enterprises out there well are very good about demonstrating impact and communicating it sometimes it’s marketing, but a lot of times they’ve developed systems because that’s, the way they think non-profits may not be used to that type of pressure. All the foundations are starting to put more and more pressure on them to demonstrate and communicate the impact and that, you know, i’m a big fan non-profits have been responsible for every big social change in our country and justin being able to communicate how they’re doing that and how they’re doing that is effectively and efficiently as possible is going to be super important, not just for funds, tony, but right now it may be more important to get talent because young people coming out there with big college debt, they can work for a nonprofit they can work for for-profit social enterprise non-profits gotta learn how to compete for that as well. I am always optimistic around the beginning of a new year. I can’t help it even in the depths of the recession. I was optimistic at the beginning of each new year. Thank you so much for having me, tony it’s. A pleasure. Don’t be nervous. Sounded nervous, you know you’ve done bigger gigs in this. I have there are there are a lot of cold. Okay? It is. Yes. It’s ah it’s bitter twenty something out. Yeah. Uh, you love story telling matt i would say, master of storytelling what? Why? Why is it so critical for non-profits storytelling is yes, i love storytelling. I believe in it very deeply because i think storytelling is what builds community and it also represents community you can’t have. You can’t really understand your communities without really understanding their stories. So in what that means in the nonprofit sector for people working directly with community organizing with direct service with any of those things to really understand what your programs are going to be doing in terms of their impact on the ground, you’re going to need to know your stories and you need to know your community stories and a cz we think about gathering our stories and doing it in an ethical way, which were goingto spend time. With we need to be building this into our programs at the outset, right? As in the design stage and and strategy stage, absolutely so a lot of people, when they think of storytelling or narrative, they think of communications only they look att fund-raising they look at how you’re communicating with your stakeholders and that’s a very important aspect, but storytelling is a crucial part of effective, um, community facing program design. It’s really important for a piece of advocacy as well? Okay, a community facing, you know, way have tony martignetti non-profit radio we have jargon jail, i know that that’s a borderline one, maybe that’s not so jargon, but i haven’t put anybody in george in jail for a while, so i have kind of itchy triggered but a cz as people know buy-in parole comes comes very easily, so community facing what we mean by that. So a lot of program designed when when people are creating programs, they’re doing it in headquarters, they’re doing it in a strategic planning phase. What they’re not necessarily doing is involving members of the affected community of this is okay, you can put me in jargon jill, for saying this for the beneficiary community last way doing with that term, but they’re not necessarily involving them in program designed. So when i say community facing it means that you are ah incorporating community members, whether they’re ngo community organizations or committee leaders in your program to sign. And as we start to think about r our story telling what, what what do we need to be thinking about in terms of program, like, logistically, you know, i’d like to leave listens with things that they can take away and, you know, execute what what should we be thinking about specifically? So they’re a couple of ways to think about story think storytelling the term is pretty broad, right? So what you’re looking at is making sure that your understanding the human, the human aspects as opposed to the data aspects or the reporting aspects of programs. So what are the intended and unintended consequences of a program? What? What is the community saying that they need? I’m not i don’t advocate for communities on ly to be taking control of programs i’m not trying to cut out non-profits or institutions or philanthropists that’s not the intention here, the intention of looking at a community’s stories of the community’s needs desires their expressions, especially through cultural means. Um, what are they saying? That they need themselves, right? What? And how do you how do you integrate that so that’s one form of story and that sort of closely aligned with with design or, you know, human-centered design or ethnography or those kinds of terms, right? The other thing is, is just is cultural expression like how you make sure that what you’re doing is is respectful and relevant and resonant with the community? And how do you storytelling and culture? Um, how do you incorporate those things into the inn into the dna of your project or your program or your organization? Like, how do you make sure that that’s part of the philosophy and in a third way of thinking about stories actually producing story like actually producing digital web documentary, even journalistic pieces like, how do you then do that piece? So there are three levels of story, okay, if we want to find out what people are saying, their needs are mean is simple as interviewing people are having focusedbuyer oops surveys isn’t all that simple. Well, it can be can be all of those things, but it also does help to understand, i mean, the weight understand political, social and economic and cultural context is to understand how, ah, community and again, i’m broadly defining community, but how community is expressing itself? What are what are people saying? Right? What are they? What are they producing in terms of anywhere from theater to film to their journalistic pieces? So you want to be able to understand those different levels? And yes, it can be a symbols of survey or interview, but you really do have to understand cultural context on dh my second guessed today, amy sample ward is gonna have a lot of ideas about listen, using tools for listening to your community now, you said community is very broad, so i mean non-profits going to have lots of different communities, they have volunteers, they have donors, those two may or may not overlap. You might consider your board a community, you have people, you’re helping the people whose lives you’re hopefully changing and for the better, um, people in your physical community or geographic community is your commute, so we need to be aware. Of what? All these different communities i have in their in their minds? Absolutely yeah, i mean, you can’t really think about on ly one community is not just your community of donors, it’s, not just her community of ah ah, the quote unquote, the affected communities of people who are most going to be affected by the work that you do you do have to do. I mean, another way of saying it is multi stakeholder analysis, i suppose, but oh, that’s jargon exactly think that was last year that was okay. Excellent. Yes, yes, all right. And we’re going to continue the conversation. Of course we have to go away for a few minutes, and lina and i will get into ah, how to empower your different communities and of course, these ethical considerations and she has a lot of very good storytelling of our own to do with some film work. We had a guest e h to m c piela who’s ah was based in madison, wisconsin, but he was he was from he is originally from turkey. Yes, you’re shorty’s warmer. This wound up. We got some warm water. Cool. Okay, um, but let’s see, you have some some very interesting film work that you’ve done and we want to keep in mind that and some of the, you know, the social change work. It’s very easy to use. What could be? Maybe, you know, inflammatory images or, you know, sort of exploitative images. And so, as we think about the ethical considerations, i’m hoping you khun build this into one of your some of the stories, like maybe born in tow, born into brothels. The story of young girls born of prostitutes in india. It wasn’t just young girls. It was it was children of eight children. Yeah, so i mean, that that’s an interesting case. There were that story’s. About eight children who learn basically photography from a western filmmaking. She was iraqi jewish, but a british born photographer who had actually gone to calcutta to photograph sex workers and the children of the sex workers who she was working with. Just sort of saw her camera and said, we want this too. We wanna learn from you. And it was just it’s. A very beautiful it’s, a very beautiful film. I’m very proud of the work that we did. There were charges from people in india that it was, you know, why’s this western filmmaker wise, this western woman, you know, coming in and trying to change things. And that’s an interest it’s an interesting charge and i can see where somewhere that charge could be valid. In this case, there are a number of reasons why i think the western filmmaker did this one. She was asked, and we put together some really interesting programs in country with indian partners and then scale that two different parts of the world and and the children themselves have been they’re not children anymore. They’re on their twenties now. It’s it’s been a while, but they all sort of benefited in different ways, and you consort of trace the impact, the direct impact on these kids. There were charges that people thought it was, you know, sort of hijacking their stories, and i can see where some people might say that i would argue against that. But i think the hijacking part it’s the the the tendency for some filmmakers, especially in film, to take stories from people who are living in the affected communities and use them to tell either a broader story that doesn’t really take into account what the community has expressed. What they need there was there was a film we started, a group called regarding humanity. It’s ah there’s, a facebook group in a twitter group, it’s a community aimed at this discussion about ethical storytelling, and we founded that group because there was a film called prostitutes of god, which was also an indian story, and it was a film that was made by a filmmaker with a non-profit i don’t remember the name the non-profit that was broadcast on vice, and the filmmaker went into a community of the of the aussies in south india. They’re sex workers connected to a temple to temples and told their they trusted her. She established trust, they told stories together, and then the way she framed the film, the community itself was extremely angry because it was a condescending portrait, and she just basically told the story in the way she wanted to do it. If the title is inflammatory, yeah, exactly. So the entire film is just it’s it’s not it is not representative of the community at all, and what they did is they did a response video. They’re like, you know, you haven’t represented us in the way that we trusted you to. This is not our stories, you’ve gotten everything. She had their titles wrong. I mean, like the way they identify themselves with within this community. And we there’s a group of seven of us who actually formed this group and two of us are left running it. And we’re like, we first regard regarding human going humanity on fish and it’s there’s a website regarding humanity dot or ge and were just like this. This has to stop, and it was sort of around the time of cockney twenty twelve you know, all of those and sort of looking at the tendency of storyteller’s filmmakers, journalists to take people stories and then use them for fund raising or for advocacy for their own sort of aggrandizement. And that was that’s something that we don’t want to see happen in the non-profit space i am not anti western intervention, i am not anti western filmmaker, not at all because i think there’s a there’s a way to do that, the way to tell stories together with community that is representative, you don’t have to be of the community to tell the story, but you do have to be extremely responsible and responsive to what the community is saying about itself, even if you’re critical of it. All right? So in our everyday work, no, what do we need? Teo, how do we police ourselves so that we don’t exploit and you know, and can cross a line, so they’re a couple of things. One is to make sure that when you’re looking at their different, we’re looking at still images, there’s looking, moving images and it also framing in terms of the text that you’re putting out one is to really understand what the cultural context is, what our community’s saying about themselves, looking at working with professional photographers, working with professionals, if you can afford it for sure, and making sure that the framing of image is correct, like i’ve seen images where you’ll have an entire story told in an image, and people are cropping in ways that becomes extremely disrespectful. Well, that’s, a very that’s interesting can you give me? Give us an example? Sure so there’s there’s a there was a photograph that i was looking at with another project where it was there was a grave site with a number of people who had were at the funeral, and they were sort of it was it was in central america and someone cropped the image and it was a mistake. But something cropped the image to cut off all the heads of the living people, and they were all you could see was the grave and people standing around this grave and you can’t really do that. Your dehumanizing the community, that’s morning. So we had to correct that, so that that that that kind of thing. You know, you know when you have an image. I don’t know, do you where’s the boundary to what? You know what you’re what you’re permitted to do with that image? I mean, let’s just suppose you have the person’s license and an approval and consent and all. Where do we draw the lines of the hide? You, khun how you can use it? I mean, it comes down to your own your own morality. Really, it does. I mean, there you there, there are templates. I mean, i have, and i’m still perfectly happy to share it on your facebook page or on your think there’s a there’s, a rubric that we created called the three arts it’s israel relevance residence and respect and it’s there’s a a series of questions about how you’re interacting with story or with image and for your interventions, but yeah, it’s, ultimately subjective, right there’s no hard and fast rules about the way you use image. But it does. I mean, ultimately you have to be. You have to understand that that people want to see that see themselves a certain way. I was doing an image search for another client and looking for positive images of african american males. I mean that were sort of license that i could license for commercial use, and there were so few, i mean, there’s a google image search, right? So this is we do have to create those images, we have to have access to those images, we have to be really careful about how we frame those images, and it can’t just be stock images all the time, right? When you’re thinking about it, i mean, it has to be the more personal you are, the better in your work. So, you know, just you don’t want the same image circulating in the same kinds of, like, marketing images. That’s that’s not what it’s about it really is about getting images, getting story, getting film, all of those from the people that you’re already working with with their permission, of course. And and in some cases you were you were executive director of kids with kids with cameras. In some cases, the empowerment is simple as providing the the tools. Yeah, i mean, i tend not so i just i tend not to use the word empowerment just because i think that there’s a there’s because that kana tates that i’m somehow empowering. Someone that i’m that you have the power, i have the power and i could give them power. Yeah, exactly. So i’m trying. I try to stay away from that word. I also don’t like the phrase giving voice to the voiceless that bugs me no end, okay, because no one’s voiceless, so but but yes, i mean, part of this is participatory storytelling. Participatory storytelling can be a really great way of ensuring that your story is representative, right, but that’s, not the only consideration husby. Good, it has to do what it has to be sort of actionable has to do what you wanted to do in terms of either it’s fund-raising her advocacy or marketing or program design. So it has to be useful, teo you, if you’re in the non-profit so participatory storytelling, someone way participatory media is a really great way of ensuring that you’re going to be that one of your ethical factory has been met. And then you have to understand you have to understand how image, how film, how any of this is circulated and distributed. How can we, you know, small midsize shops? How can we gain this expertise? And by the way, the link that you referred to the three r’s yes, we’ll put that in the facebook page with shows takeaways will be posted this afternoon, so if i have the link well or you can add it is a comment either way ilsen it’s ok, how do you it’s quite that expertise? I mean you either if you don’t have the budget, you do a lot of reading on this. I mean, there is a lot of reading there’s a lot of knowledge out there on dh we have some on the regarding human e website, you can just go and take a look at some of the case studies that we’ve got better to look at the facebook page because we have a constant stream of we like this. We don’t like this like what you all think about this s o it’s really about gaining that knowledge? You can if you have the buddy you khun hyre someone to help you with photography, with film or you can hyre storytellers locally there’s there’s something called the impact producersgroup on dh were a group of people who look at how you use storytelling effectively for social change, for social impact so and you can also look at some of the organizations that are doing this really well, like msf does this beautifully that’s doctors without borders argast borders oxfam out of the uk. So someone we’ve criticized some of their work, but some of the work is really, really good, and they’re smaller organizations that we sometimes highlight on the regarding community page, so people are doing that they’re they’re doing this well, yeah, we don’t want the negative it’s certainly it’s, eminently doable absolutely have to be very conscious exact of what you’re doing absolutely responsible. Yeah, exactly. There no throwaways here? Can you tell us another story? Maybe, maybe it’s a film, or maybe that doesn’t have to be one of the films you worked on, but because your work is particularly interesting because you’re building social engagement around trans media, whatever the media form is, you’re doing the social engagement work, but using the images of of the of another body of a body of work that that important that don’t say that tells the that reveals the issues. Yeah, so a lot of the work that i do as you say, it is an engagement, but i’m trying to bridge that gap between engagement and relevant action, right? So it’s not just about oh, we’ve raised awareness of the problem. So for example, you mentioned the film that we worked on called who is diana crystal now? This is a very large scale engagement thing, so it’s not necessarily. I wouldn’t recommend this as a model to smaller or mid sized non-profits because it it was its very large, involved project, but the learnings from then we’re about to issue our impact report, which will hopefully have some guidance for people. We wanted to make sure that the stories that we that we told were reflective of the honduran community that we were working with, and although i think they just lay the ground work so i’m sorry, is this a film is a film about a documentary about people leaving central in south america, he’s travelling north to the u s through mexico through mexico and crossing the u s mexico border, and the film itself is a story of one man who was found dead. On our side of the border in arizona and the quest to identify he has a tattoo on he has a tattoo on his body is danny crystal that zest that name? Yeah, it’s also. Exactly. And i can’t tell you who danny crystal is. You have to watch the movie, but but it’s it’s, it’s the story of i mean it’s basically the film director mark silver saw thie image of a skull in the desert. You know, he he and i were talking about systemic change and how you tell the story of systemic change and he saw this girl is like, what does one skull what? Just want an unidentified skull tell you about the world? About migration? And so we tried to tell that story about the systemic issues around migration through our website through a book that we wrote and produced, um and through a number of different participatory there’s something called border stories, which allows people to send reflections in tow our website. But ultimately it was about making sure that our stories lead to action both within the non profit sector are partners that we’re working with, and we had an entire engagement. Xero mechanism teo bring those people into program design, and also that it had effect in the village that this this man came from. He was ultimately identified so that’s that was e i think that there’s again there’s a very large scale project. It took about five years. But i think that there’s learnings there, but how you teachings there rather about how you can take your stories, work with the community, and then create ah, human portrait of your issue that then becomes actionable. Okay, so share a couple of a couple of teachings because this could be certainly done on a smaller scale. There were different. The smaller community. Well, much more community. You don’t have to have an entire involved website. You can do it with one image you can do with an image in a paragraph. I mean, for sure so you can do it in many, many different ways. I’ve worked on like xero budget projects, right? And still the quality is there hopefully, but what you can do is you can. One of things we did is we worked with a new non-profit called kali brie, which is one of our partners, and it was sort of born under the aegis of the of the social engagement, uh, platform that we created the woman, robin reineke, who is in the film she’s portrayed she used to work with the pima county morgue and then ended up taking her work informing this non-profit around it she has been sheena is she and we, the impact team, have been sharing images have been sharing digital asset social media so sure, lots of sharing lots of bearing, elaboration, sharing tool sharing, sharing cultural assets and then making sure that the work one of things that we did was have our website point her website for people who are trying to identify missing missing relatives. We’re trying to locate them rather and there is that all that’s stopping but that’s ah that’s an example of what is the community thirsting for? What are they saying they need in this case? It sounds like they were saying they need help finding missing relative. Yeah, exactly. And there’s no there’s, no centralized database for missing migrants, undocumented migrants or that they don’t get into our national databases. So there’s a there’s a real need there we have to kind. Of wrap it up, which kind of kills me. You’re one of the guests. I wish i had longer time. Tell me what you love about the work you do. Oh, it’s, just it’s, it’s, so personal. There’s, though, there’s, just so much room for you know, sort of a person to person, community, community kind of interaction, it’s, strategic it’s directed its targeted it’s all those, you know, sort of technical things, but it altum it leads about making sure that the people that you’re working with and on behalf of our always represented and i love using. So we are seeing an increase in organizations really interested in that, and i imagine that a bunch of folks will follow up with peter, after your invitation and sharing his email or twitter account, but a note that i can offer from antennas that we have these communities of practice, online groups of non-profit staff who are, you know, interested in the same topics we would love to start one that’s around podcasting and audio if their community members who want to be involved and kind of be the group leaders for that, so just let me know, just email amy am wy att and ten and tn dot org and weaken get you set up and have you, you know, finding finding other community members. If you just want to have calls, they’re all recorded so you can listen to them like a bod gas but it’s just a way so that everybody can find each other and keep talking and sharing resource is excellent. So what we want to talk about is organizing tools. And i think you know this show sometimes these shows really do work out. I actually do plan them out. I think this is a perfect dovetail. Two. What? Lena and i were just talking about it. I know. I know. You were listening in. Yeah, definitely. I mean, i think, you know, even though we were thinking of these beans, you know, maybe a way to highlight some tools that folks who are doing some community organizing committee management work would use really these air these air tools to help whatever kind of project you’re working on, whether that, you know, folks who are remote and collecting stories, and you’re trying to share those or i mean, whatever that project, maybe you need to be collaborating with people and being social and so, you know, we have a number of tools, many of them and ten uses, so i can i can vouch that they do work and that at least some humans have been able to figure them out. So so, yeah, happy to share. Okay, um, tools could start on your own site, right? Oh, definitely. I mean, i think i think that’s something that people forget, especially when you know what we can talk about different different groupings of what a team is that you’re working with. But sometimes you don’t know who the people in your community are that want to be working with you, and there may be incredibly, incredibly active or or community leaders that really want to give their time to you, and you don’t know that. Because you’re not making that an option. So i wanted to start from the pen of most broad place and remind folks that your website isn’t just a way to tell people about what you do or highlight your programs, but also let people who are looking to do something for you quickly have that resource. So one example, i thought i would highlight because i think it is something people can understand even if you’re not looking at the website is the girl scouts of northeast texas have a grate on their volunteer in the volunteer section of their website. They have a volunteer tool kit that has videos it has template. You know, you don’t even want to log in, and you don’t have to have contacted them first. You going to say i want to start volunteering? Let me look through what some of these resource is our that you’ve already made available so i can see what more i need. And then i can call you when i need more, okay? And what what else is there? Is there on their site that makes us noteworthy? Um, well, i think what is noteworthy about it to me? Is that something like the girl scouts or, you know, another organization that that has kind of programs that are recognizable? We forget that even though people know who the girl scouts are maybe or participate in the girl scouts, that doesn’t mean you just automatically know how to get involved or, you know, even if you are already involved, how do you know where to get the resources you need? Teo do kind of your volunteer role, whether that’s leading a group or participated in an event, etcetera. So what i think is most notable is actually not the content, but the fact that the content is made available publicly on the website you don’t have to know you want to be part of that, you know, special online group, or you haven’t had teo call them and get a password, too, something there, just putting it there so that anybody can get it a part of this, this kind of engagement and organizing is listening to what conversations are out there and that if you’re not doing that smartly, it can be really burdensome and time consuming because you got to go out and look at all. Your separate channels all the time. Yeah, and i think what is difficult for for many organizations, at least that i’ve talked to before is thinking, okay, well, we have a facebook page say, and maybe a twitter account i think those are often the most common to so say you’ve got in the counting on both of those platforms and, you know, you’re paying attention if somebody maybe comments on a facebook post, you know, that you put up on your page or you’re getting an email notification of someone is replying to one of your tweets, but you may you may be keeping it at that level and that’s great, i mean, definitely we should all be paying attention of people air directly engaging or commenting or replying, but there’s, that piece of the conversation that’s all those people that maybe you care about are talking about topics you care about, but you’re not following those and so making sure that that you’re also tapping in and of course not reading every tweet that goes by but making sure you’re you’re staying on top of opportunities to engage people on dh, not just waiting for them to reply. To you? Okay, how do we start doing this? This is the way we got a world wide web. Tio tio, listen to how do we do it smartly? Well, there are i mean, there are a ton of tools, so i put in just a few of my ah, a few of my personal favorites, because way which was using them, but again, i am just one one version of humanity. So there many, many tools out there, but one that i think that’s often overlooked because it’s not necessarily the most well, certainly not the most new but it’s also not the most social are google alert there free they’re just alert you, khun, get them azan email or and you just can put in whatever you want. You could put in your name so let’s use non-profit radio is an example i would i would put in non-profit radio i’d also put in the hash tag non-profit radio of people are using it without a space i’ve put in tony martignetti i would put in common mis spellings of tony martignetti on and that way, no matter what, let the robots of the internet go do that. Work and find where people are mentioning your name non-profit radio, et cetera. Or, you know, let’s, say today you had a couple specific topics you knew were going to be on the show on, so not using google alerts, but talking about our next tool, you vain tools that are actually looking at that social web to find you? Are there other experts on these topics? There certainly are about social media, you know, are there other people talking about still making? Are there other people talking about maybe locations that were going to be discussed as examples? All that kind of, you know, just putting out putting out some taproot to see what’s out there, i think can really help. So to tools to share first is mentioned dot com on it. I mean, you can just go there today and sign up for us, uh, free free by-laws log in and test it out. But it’s really for monitoring conversations in real time. And, of course, one of the benefits of a lot of these social kind of monitoring and management tools that there’s analytics built in so you can start scene, you know, what’s working what? Isn’t where there are popular comments or or even influential commenters. You know what that twitter user that aa lot of folks were retweeting. Okay, so mentioned is cool. Let me ask you quickly about just jump back to google alerts, aren’t there sure, cem cem shortcomings. I mean, i had, uh i had a conversation on the show last year with with maria simple, and we were sharing that and she had some alternatives to google lorts there there tend to be some holes in those aren’t there? I would say they’re holes in every tool and that’s why, you know, that’s? Why? I probably have, you know, ten different tools ultimately in the ecosystem of technology that i’m using because there isn’t one tool that does everything you need. You have overlapping alerts with different tools. Yeah, okay. All right. So, it’s pretty simple strategy. Okay. All right. So mentioned is cool. You like mention? Yeah. You also like sprouts social? Yeah. Sprout social is something that we’ve kind of test run at and ten and part of why it’s been a tool that we’ve used it in ten and something that i definitely hear from community members. Is the ability for us all to log in and see, you know, what’s happening on the inten or twitter account or on the facebook page, etcetera? So everybody being able to see the same thing and not all logging in independently, all replying to someone’s tweet without knowing that it has been replied, you know, that kind of confused, um, process and, you know, not just confused, but really a waste of time, right? If there’s three people all trying to respond to someone that’s great, that three people care to respond, but, you know, there’s, only one needed so krauz social really helps with that kind of multiple people on a team being ableto log in and monitor things together again, similar to mention it had some of those analytics pieces. So, you know, measuring what’s, working in real time and figuring out where that prioritize, okay, we have to go to a break in in about a minute or so, the sprouts social have a free component, or is it is it fee only? Um, it has at least a free trial, and i, uh i would imagine that it has either free or low cost option. Or, potentially, i see they tweeted you, perhaps we can treat them really quick on the brake on and ask about their non-profit options. Okay, did they use the do you see the tweet? Did they use the hashtag non-profit radio? They did. Okay, well, sam will pick it up on a break. Why don’t we go away for that break? Yeah, so one tool that we’ve been playing around with at and ten is flack and black is, um i know that on the show before tony and just realizing that i’m no longer a spring chicken of non-profit radio going on here multiple years now, this was probably a long time ago that we talked about it, but we talked about a tool that totally still exists yammer so it’s kind of like a twitter or, you know, social network, but it’s just inside the organization, black and similar. So it’s, a new internal organization tool on dh some of the reasons that i think it’s cool and wanted to share it today are also the reasons why n ten started testing it out and playing around with it. So one is, of course, it’s, that internal tulani searchable and you can post things, you can have different groups, and people can say, you know, so and ten is an example. We have a group just for the upcoming conference, so if you want to share an update our hey, i secured, you know, this rental and here’s the contact, if anybody needs it or, you know, whatever those kind of just little notes that you don’t want to just send us an email and overwhelmed everybody, but you want to post somewhere so it’s it’s a cool, flexible tool for that, but it also allows you to pull in social media content. So for example, we have staff who believe it or not are not on facebook or some staff who are not on twitter and this way. We can pull in everything that the inten you know, facebook, profile, post or that we post on twitter from antenna so that all staff can still see what we’re posting or promoting or talking about even if they’re not on that platform on dh that’s been helpful for staff? Who can say, oh, gosh, i see it’s been three days since we, you know, posted about this upcoming event. Could we get another, you know, post out there about it, even if they’re not again following that channel. Yes. Excellent. Okay. And i saw slack. Does have is free, like is free. Yeah, i love that slack. S l c k dot com. Yeah, and it’s pretty it’s. Pretty fun. And you can, of course, set up notifications. And you know those different customs things. If you want to just go check at first if you want to be overwhelmed with emails, but yeah. It’s a free tool. Go check it out. Okay. So then, when it comes to all of your content, i think this is something that we get a lot. Of questions about on dh this goes for bulls working with your internal staff teams, but then also, you know, maybe staff and bored collaborating on things or staff and volunteers in the community collaborating on things on an interesting example where where we have content that we need to be sharing with people outside the organization is at our conference. So all of those people who are presenting, you know, up on the main stage, the opening plenary when we need to have all of their slides, and if they’re sending it to me, an email there video files could be too big, they’re you know, i might lose track of which version they have, so finding some tools to share share content on, and i think a lot of people have heard of drop box s o i wanted to share on alternative so that people had a couple of options to review called box and box dot or ge is free for non-profits, and it works similarly to drop box so you have your files and folders and you can upload things and share things, but you can also be collaborating on a document and have those notifications about revisions or comments that other people have made a cz you’re working on things, so i’m just thinking back to the beginning of the show and and having content, whether that’s videos or, you know, documents with text all of that that you’re trying to share with people, probably in lots of different locations, okay? And i i saw that they have up to ten free user licenses. That’s what you’re referring to? Yeah, so you can have ten can for free ten accounts? Yes, you don’t. Okay. Uh, doodle for calendar ring. We just have about a minute left. Okay, well, that is fine. Doodle is extremely simple and easy to use, but it is a tool that i do not know how i would operate without it. Take you ten seconds to get a doodle set up. But this is for scheduling calls, figuring out when people are available, it has time zone support, so it’ll tell people, you know, the times on there in you don’t have all of that. Oh, i thought i was responding in east coast time, you know, but it’s a really great flexible tool. That’s free to use on guy. Couldn’t recommend it more interfaces with whatever calendar using whether it’s ah, whether it’s an app or it’s i cal or its outlook, it interfaces with a bunch of counters. I used to use it, and then they ran into trouble. I think they weren’t supporting apple for a while and then now i have to get back to it. Now, on your recommendation.
