And the topic is what to do when technology isn’t your problem, and i’m gonna introduce a little different because this is there for them. I want to start with who’s sitting right next to me is tracy kronzak and she is co founder of brightstep partners, then robert winer, president of robert l weinger consulting, and we have mark baizman customers success director for sales force foundation. But a lot of talk about sales force today how generous they are. Thank you, robert and mark. Welcome. Thank you. Pleasure to have you on non-profit radio and Mark is taking 14 the team by by being the stand e we want you in. We only have three mikes on non-profit radio it’s fine. I need to work off those breakfast tacos that we are standing. This is your this is your exercise. I’m you need to have a corporate exercise program. It’s not a fun russian. I’m just saying that no. Okay, what to do in technology isn’t your problem. Treyz kronzak what is the problem here? What? Why is technology getting blamed? Technology gets blamed because when an organization picks up a new tools such a sales force ah ah lot of times it doesn’t necessarily consider the full range of the people, the processes and the adoption techniques required to put it into place. So, you know, you get this great new shiny tool and what happens either very quickly or overtime, that it doesn’t meet your needs. You don’t know why, and ultimately people are just is angry with the new thing as they were the old thing, and we haven’t had a larger organizational discussion around. Why it’s important to understand yourself? Understand the context of what you’re working in and understanding your own limitations and capacity to really adopt technology, and that includes change. Change yourself, change how you operate and change your future. Planning to account for the technology that you’ve adopted. Okay, but what do we do with the sort of overviews stage robert you wantto want to contribute? So i think in addition to everything, tracy just talked about a vision of what success means and how to reach success. What are the ingredients for actually getting there? It’s not just like buying a new car. And you sit in it and you turn the key. And if it’s got gas in it, it should move forward. It’s not that simple. There are a lot of moving parts of that that either the non-profit or the vendor or a consultant needs to configure in order for the system to work and that’s so easy to neglect mark overviewing time. Ultimately it comes down to people and as we know, people are fuzzy and hard to work with and fun and wonderful, good and and and are great. But throwing technology at things like people, problems and process problems is goingto not fix the problem and you’re going to end. Up, you know, unhappier and maybe spending a lot of money and a lot of time dahna sounds like we need some organizational introspection. We do need some organizational introspection, which is a challenging thing for a lot of organizations to dio, you know, when we’ve all had experiences where it’s so easy to point at the technology as the problem and say this database just doesn’t work for the web site isn’t working, it isn’t doing what we needed to do. The organizational introspection aspect of that is to say, you know what? We made the wrong decisions, we don’t have the right process is in place, sometimes we don’t have the right people in place, those air difficult conversations to have it’s challenging to stephen carr about the timeto have those conversations, but there is sometimes a necessary recognition the way that we’re doing things has not been the right way, so we need to change the way that we’re doing things so that we don’t get ourselves into this type of situation again. And as we as we were talking, i want to encourage you to just jump in don’t wait for me to, you know, call. On let’s have a conversation we’ll get robert yeah, one of the alternate titles for the session was management problems to skies this technology problems ah ah there’s a good subtitle so a new piece of technology is not going to fix a broken management system, a broken culture or the lack of communication between people or departments. It in fact, will often magnify those problems and make them worse. When we identified mark, you want ta, i’d just be remiss if i didn’t say by the way, this is not unique to non-profits right, this is endemic to any organization, and i’ve spent some time in the for-profit sector and if anything, it’s just a cz eft up there is it isn’t a nano constructor that’s as far as we can go when the expletives because now noted thank you. Wait, we had trouble last year, but non-profit radio was not terrestrial then, but now it is we have am and fm affiliates, so i don’t want you don’t want the way we have to keep it clean that’s, right? Also teo thing that i would point out is sometimes the best managerial decision that your organization can make. When it comes to adopting new technology is actually to say no say, no, we’re not going to do this right now because we have these other things to solve, we have to solve how are people work together, our common understanding of what these things mean that we’re putting into the technology and, you know, we have to put the right sponsorship in place in our organization, it’s not enough for a managerial team to say go ahead and make these things happen, you know? Non-profit leaders today must be fluent in technology, and if they’re not there is remis is if they’re not fluent in finances, hr or other, you know, key functions of an organization, this introspection is going to be very, very hard, though, tracy, what you’re suggesting is out ah, yeah, incredibly, very much needed essential, but that doesn’t sound likely that an organization is going to say, well, that a ceo is going to say, you know, we’ve got these organizational issues we need to deal with these before we try to apply a technology solution. Well, it’s certainly not gonna happen overnight. This has to be an ongoing problem. Awareness is helping this. Awareness is the necessary first for step in having conversations with with colleagues and sometimes colleagues outside your your organization. One of the things that we think both challenging and an opportunity is that it khun frequently be the person who’s in the techie rule who has an opportunity to really push those conversations forward, that if the management or the leadership of the organization, it doesn’t have the level of awareness of the problem or is sort of trying, teo put technology solutions in place where it’s not really a technology problem, the technology person, whether it’s next-gen all techie or staff for director, has an opportunity to help frame that conversation. And one of the things that we’ve talked about before that is could be a really interesting exercise. You know, one of the things it needs to happen if you’re being pushed in the wrong direction or if you think that you’re being pushed in the wrong direction, if leadership is taking things in a technology direction without having an understanding of the risks, the problems, the process issues that maybe underlying you may as the tech you want to say no, this is a really bad idea and there’s ah, sort of easy technique that one can try that actually comes from the improv world of rather than saying no, these people don’t respond well to know particularly d’s or ceos or whoever may be, you know, sort of up the organizational food chain. So if you’re in the rule where you’re being asked to do something and you see that there’s a problem rather than saying now that’s a terrible idea frame the know as yes, and so yes, i hear what you’re saying, and you can then move the direction in the conversation that you want to move it. This is more of a tactical kind of thing to do than a strategic kind of thing to do, but in terms of starting to shift the conversation, starting to shift that change in the or organisational dynamics that’s one concrete thing that people who may not be in a position of objective authority khun due to start moving the conversation in the right direction. One of the other things i think that’s really helpful is having leadership kind of paint the picture of what success actually looks like and then getting under the hood. And saying, ok, so how are we going to measure that? So talking about the theory and the strategy of okay, this is, you know, the desired and state of, you know what the technology implementation is designed to achieve? And then how are we going to measure that end state and perhaps the progress along the way so that, you know, we know that at the end of this, we’ll be spending, you know, one hour poor grant proposal instead of three days or something to that effect that’s a metrics to it that air unreviewable that’s, right? Yeah. Okay, okay, you’re tuned to non-profit radio. Robert, but at the big picture level, if this were easy, we wouldn’t be bothering with this session for the purpose of this session is to say this is hard, you’re not alone, you’re not the only non-profit techie or accidental techie who has ever faced this kind of situation before. And here are some tips and techniques that you can take home and use when you’re faced with this kind of situation, which you certainly will be okay before we get koegler treyz oh, i was because they just remember to technology doesn’t have feelings, you know, technology doesn’t have quirks, it doesn’t have feelings, it doesn’t have exceptional people dio, but people do and, you know, the trick of every technologist is to take an organization that is driven by a heart and match it to a tool that has no heart, you know, technology has a lot of other things working for it, but one thing it doesn’t do is express feelings, so, you know, when you’re a non-profit it’s really hard sometimes when you have a bunch of feelings about tools that you don’t necessarily understand latto have these conversations around well before we get to something that’s going to force us to standardize? You know, we need teo understand what we’re even standardizing around. Some people don’t use the same terminology for things like what’s a donor what’s the household what’s the household, the basic definitions where well, caitlin’s been doing it this way forever. But, you know, jim does it this other way so let’s actually get together and talk about that stuff and that hashing out in those conversations, maybe the technology person is the one who has to facilitate those conversations, which let’s face it. Technology people maybe aren’t the best folks to be doing that. Yeah. All right. Can we identify some symptoms of organisational malays or where we want to call them that way that exists, but technologies being blamed, we have some symptoms around this way. We do have some red flag phrases is what we call them in our in our session, and i’ll let i’ve been talking a lot. So let’s, let me turn it over to my other co presenters. I mean, we could just toss some of them out, but one of them is, you know, my my va boardmember who used this solution in his for-profit company and thinks it’s going to be perfect for us. Another one is. This tool is free. I used it at my last non-profit, which is utterly unlike my current non-profit, but it was great there, okay, another one is, can you make it looked just like the thing we’re leaving, or can you make it happen in three weeks? Can you make it match the are broken business processes, okay, you got one more because you were doing through one that’s. Good, ok, ok. That was quicker than i thought i was going to be all right for the symptoms part. What about after the technology’s already been adopted? We’ve already we’ve spent the time and the money to go through the due diligence process we’ve brought in all the important stakeholders from end users, toe board members who get quarterly reports, the technologies we paid for it, it’s it’s in our office and it’s being blamed. Now, now, where do we stand? So my response to that is what is your ongoing investment in the technology and that’s dollars? That’s also people and time, right, which are all essentially the same thing if you think that by flipping the switch on day one and, you know, sending people to a training class or getting a bunch of folks you know, around ah presentation screen, you’re fooling yourself that that is all you need to dio you really need to have a comprehensive plan of post launch adoption, you’ll need to have things like open lunch and learns you’ll really need to invest in the success of the technology. When you have a car, you don’t just expect that the thing is gonna work. Forever you got to take it in and get its oil changed and, you know, get the air filters and all that nonsense. Why should it be any different with this type of technology? Okay, more? Yeah, the problem is to is that, you know, we’ve entered an era where, you know, consumer technology and what we call enterprise technology are kind of becoming merge together and, you know, the expectations of a lot of folks have been reduced in terms of the complexity of adopting technology. So, you know, i have an iphone and i press a button and things happen a million won, i cannot exactly, and the thing is, is that when you’re working from that framework, you don’t realize that, you know, pulling together a sales force database or adopting any kind of cr, um or, you know, even just turning on a social media kind of community for your organization. It’s, not a button click it’s a very long tail operation, it requires ongoing maintenance, and if your expectation is is you’re going to open it up and have it just the same way that i opened up a word and have a word document. Or, you know, press a button on my iphone and get the weather, then you’re not really considering, you know, the full capability of your technology and where a lot of organizations stomach and all its implication exactly, and where they stumble sometimes is there, like, we have eighteen thousand dollars to do this, we’re going to spend all eighteen thousand dollars getting it done and never consider that next year they might need to spend another four thousand dollars just to keep the darn thing running, you know, or we have zero dollars to do this whole thing and, oh, my gosh, it doesn’t work the free thing that we got stinks. Yeah, and of course, right, what have you invested in it in from, you know, do you have somebody who’s actually trained on how to use the free thing? No. Okay, well, of course it sucks and you asked about what do you do when you’ve got the technology and you hate it, but where we’re re budding that in saying before you turn the technology on, you need to take these steps? You need to go first, you need to go through a needs assessment to make sure it’s really the right technology. Second, you need to manage expectations that this is not a magic wand, that you’re going to turn it on, and life is going to be perfect and third, that you need to go through a change management adoption process so that people are on board with what the decision wass why you bought this technology, how you’re going to use it, how it’s going to change your life in the organization and that there’s ongoing support and training so that you’re successful, not just on day one, but into the future. Yeah, and i’ve had a couple of, i guess talk about and panels talk about the importance of having all the stakeholders involved from ah, when you’re at the stage of just questioning whether the existing technology needs to be replaced, the answer that maybe no and that’s that’s what you’re all talking about, it subsumed in that in that possible, no, absolutely, and i would take that even a step further that the question to ask isn’t necessarily whether the technology needs to be replaced, but what is the business need that’s being met or unmet by the technology and then, is there a better way that that business needs mission driven business? Need khun b met through a different technological solution through a process change, but i think a lot of where organizations end up going wrong is finding a solution, and then sort of looking for the problem to have it fit that work’s never four, they’re in so much pain that anything new looks viable on dh that’s also a very dangerous position from which to operate on. And in fact, this very expo hall that we sit in is full of solutions and glossy brochures to problems that you may or may not have, and i mean there’s a hyre forcing her for what down is describing to and that’s called business process reengineering. But the very simple explanation for that term is that when you adopt a new tool, you know that tool has a certain way of operating, and it has parameters under which you can change, customize and adopted to how your organization behaves, but at the end of the day, those parameters are not infinite. You have to adopt to the tool that you are purchasing or requiring or building just a cz much as the tool itself can be adopted to how you do business and meeting in the middle like that, organizations don’t consider the real time and energy and effort and money that it requires to do that, so they turn the lights on with a new tool and the tool doesn’t meet their needs because they haven’t ever thought about like how their needs are going to match what this new tools providing for them? And we’re not saying that technology is never the problem. Sometimes your technology truly does stink, but that’s that’s a fraction of the problems that i’ve seen in twenty plus years of consulting with non-profits ah lot of the time, the technology may be perfectly fine, and but you can’t possibly make it work with your current business processes or your current staffing skillsets another possibility is the existing technology could be modified without having to bring in something wholesale, new and different or or amended. You can add some new piece of technology on top of your current systems in order to get through some period until you can afford to make a change or afford to hire new staff or upgrade. Their skillsets and that that continues teo back to what we sort of refer to as three legs of a triangle that when you’re looking at any technology problem, it may present as something that is the actual technology of the database is the wrong database it’s not gonna work for our organization, but the three elements that we encourage people to think about our and this couldn’t happen before you’re adopting a new technology you can happen after you’ve adopted the new technology and it’s not working for you toe look at whether there are people issues and your organisation that air getting in the way to look at whether their process issues that are getting in the way, and to look at whether there are adoption issues that are getting in the way so all of these processes could happen before, during and should happen before, during and after the technology adoption. So if you’ve gone down, if an organization has gone down the wrong path or, you know the technology has been in place for a long time and the needs have changed, it doesn’t necessarily mean that you need to jettison the technology. But tracy was talking about business process, re engineering, it’s a matter of understanding what the business needs are where the current tool is falling short, but looking at it again from those business needs perspective rather than what can we massage and the technology to sort of take advantage of the latest and greatest features? What do we actually need? Is this technology solution goingto meet those needs? How are we making the decisions? Have we budget at her appropriately for this? Do we have the right support in place for our users? Is this helping us further our mission? Are we doing this because it looks fancy or because of boardmember told us to, so there are a lot of problems, and they’re a lot of things that can get in the way of making the right decisions, but we really want to emphasize the importance of looking at people processes. Adoption is lord let’s, talk about some some process in this introspection uh, endeavour exercise that we talked about earlier, how does this way we’re already talking about, really how the conversation should get started coming from different levels, but how are we going to actually do this evaluation of what’s our what’s, our what! R r really problems and needs. Nobody so robert so and this conference and our world, our non-profit world has a lot of consultant’s speaking as one, but a lot of vendors as well who are really smart about these things, and you frequently don’t have the experience within your organization because at least the kinds of big projects we’re talking about, you don’t go through every day. You might go through them once every five years, once every ten years, once every twenty years, so you don’t have the on the ground day to day experience of going through this kind of needs assessment selection, adoption implementation changed management process so you may need outside help in order to get through this, you may need outside fresh blood in the organization, on staff who have experience with these kinds of issues, but we’re not saying that if you’ve made these mistakes and hit a wall that you know, your life is over and you might as well just turn off the lights, there are people who are smart enough to bail you out. I will also, i’d be remiss if i didn’t direct folks to the idealware dot org’s website, which is really a fantastic resource, i like to think of it as the consumer reports. Yeah, very much so. And it’s, where i direct a lot of folks who are just getting started, obviously, because as i work for the sales for its foundation, a lot of folks come to me and ask me about sales force and it’s sort of like, hey, do i need, you know, do i need this lexus? And, you know, maybe i don’t know what? Where you going? Yeah, maybe you need a bike and you need a scooter. I don’t know. So i direct folks to idealware to do a little bit of a deeper dive into their into their actual needs and idealware has done a great job of there’s a selecting a donor management system workbook, which is, you know, sort of telling you i didn’t know about the workbook. I just know about the objective evaluation, so the evaluation stuff is great, but there’s a work book, which really, it steps you through. I think maybe not as advanced a level is what robert would dio but the same type of thing where you could kind of take that internally to your organization and you know, ask some of those questions to folks. Okay, excellent resource. Thanks, mark, i also want to point out to you that, you know, in the five years or so that i’ve been doing sales force consulting and working with organizations to implement sales horse is a real tool. You know, i’ve heard so many times, yes, we understand that’s how the real world does it, but we are very special, and our our process is very different, and we’re very special snowflake way, our very special snowflake. And are you? Are you frozen water? Yeah, let it go and and that’s the problem with saying that it’s because, like, you know, to pick on a very easy, easy process like fund-raising there are many national organizations, you know, that are designed around helping non-profits understand standard fund-raising behaviour and how that should be treated in an organization. So, you know, when i go in and i hear something really exceptional, i’m like, why are you so exceptional when the best practice for fund-raising is this this and this? And sometimes it’s azizi is asking that question internally? Like, why do we think we’re so exceptional? And sometimes there are really exceptional things like we distribute, you know, books to homeless folks and and that’s a very small a special thing, but that’s got nothing to do with how an organization, specifically a non-profit should operate and the best practices around that operation. So if your organization is divergent from how the industry operates, that’s a really good place to start in realigning yourself to how you actually literally conduct business, because all of these tools that mark mentioned are designed around the best practice of non-profit operations and start your own work start there is, too just be sure that you understand how your organization does things, you know, from a diagnostic perspective frequently, i don’t know things just sort of happened. I make this decision, and then i send it to this other department, and somebody approved something and, you know, then it’s done something that organizations can do internally is take a representative sample from across the organization and just document how things actually happen, whether you’re bringing in a consultant, whether you’re working with within idealware resource, whether you have the capacity on staff to be able to do the kind of documents generation and then maybe in our p if that’s where you end up heading that simple process of just documenting where things are now could be really, really enlightening. And robert robert gets the last word and just have a couple seconds left. In addition to the resource that mark talked about, we have a discussion lists on and ten there discussion lists on tech soup. There’s, the progressive exchange. There are lists where you can ask other people. This is how we do it at my organization. Does this make sense? Has your commendation power of us hub, salesforce, foundation and power of us hub. Excellent. Excellent. Yeah, i got a visit. You out there sometime. I got to come to our oregon. I’ve never been to oregon. Um, i know, i know, but i want to go. I really do want to go pacific northwest. Absolutely. I want to wash. I’ll believe it when i see it. Okay. All right. What do you think this is what you think of this panel of three ladies from it’s? Great. You know, it’s really interesting. Something that we were reflecting on a staff after the conference to was, you know, it’s. Not a brand new conversation, talking about supporting different groups. Different communities either in within the inten community, at larger or in the tech sector in the nonprofit sector. But what we’re reflecting on really is the way those conversations have taken shape and changed over the years, and this last year really felt like this was the ntc where there were multiple formal sessions opportunities like you presented, where you folks could come talk, talk to you and have their their stories and their ideas shared more broadly, but also a lot of kind of ad hoc meetings at lunch where they would say, everybody come to the table if you want to have this conversation or let’s meet, you know it at the reception tonight and so many conversations about how do we how do we do more to get more people like us or more people like you or more people that know how to do acts? You know, how do we get more people into this community? And i think that’s really exciting and really interesting that that it’s at a place where it doesn’t have to feel like, oh, this is kind of a controversial topic, you know? We’re gonna have to go over here. In secret and have this conversation, but that it such an open, you know, we really want to create a space in this community that is inclusive and is welcoming, and part of that is creating a great community. But the other part is saying, we have to go out there and make those invitations, you know, you can’t just say, i want to have the best dinner party and make all the food if you haven’t invited anyone to come over, so so i’m excited that the community is kind of at that space where it’s ready to go out there, think about how we’re creating community in inside this space, but also go out and make introductions and invitations and welcome new people in cool. I’m glad so this feels like a watershed year for you on dh yeah, it’s exciting, and i think it really inspired a lot of staff to feel like they’re not the only ones, you know, getting to see that there’s opportunity to bring more people in because, you know, staff when when we know that there’s so many community members out there, but we don’t see them because we’re just in the office? I think the ntc really inspired them and reminded them, you know, there are all of these people out there and we can invite more people evil in its going to be great instead of thinking that it’s kind of just us, you know, tucked away in the office that’s outstanding. And i’m glad i was a part of it. You feel like it was your baby. You’ll have me back next year. Yeah, well, we’ll see. Yes. All right. I’ll see you when i e i’ll believe it when i see it. I believe that recently. So over there at ntc, you get a lot of enquiries about bringing people literally into your organization. Hiring who are technologists? Yes. Oh, so you have some advice around let’s? Start with the the job description. Yeah, i think you know, this is especially the question we get asked the most. You know, we know that we need someone to do manage all of our attacker to help us with our website. But that’s what? That’s? What? All that we know. You know, we just know that we need somebody that knows more than we dio. So how do we write? A job description or where do we even promote the job? Andi so obviously kind of depends on what kind of job it is it’s a website versus maybe on it, director, managing all kinds of systems, et cetera. But there’s still some some basic steps that everybody can take, no matter what technical job they’re trying to fail. And first is to remember that you don’t necessarily need to know all of the jargon and the acronyms and the web two point oh, everything. What you do need to know very clearly is what your organization needs on dh what your goals are, who your audience is, you know, if you kind of try to make up for not knowing by filling, you know, job description with a bunch of technical terms, but you’ve never put in there. You know what we really need our systems that can talk to each other, someone who doesn’t have that integrate asian expertise is not going to apply. They’re not going to know that’s what you’re looking for. So knowing what your goals are that kinds of tools that may be necessary to meet your mission, knowing that and being very clear. About that is going to serve you more than, you know, trying to do an internet search for a bunch of jargon. Ok, so so that that’s that’s the first caveat reminder on dh then also, before you start putting that job description together, there’s a great opportunity to talk to everyone inside the organization pull in from from what they know in their own job, you know, what do they need? What what tools are they using that they think need to be updated or and this is not like, oh, there’s, you know, so and so, who just personally doesn’t like this one tool we use not a preference kind of, uh, list, but here’s something that’s really stopping me in my work, you know, here’s something that isn’t serving me to do my job and created a bit of an internal needs versus wants assessment because when you look at that and you can say, will hear things that may be a bunch staff want, but they’re not the priority items of this, you know, kind of three or four things on our really critical needs list that’ll help you decide howto prioritize things both on the job description and when you’re looking at applicants, so if you see someone has, you know, a really great experience but saying their most experienced in isn’t on that needs list, you know, it’s it’s like, wow, that’s, great it’s really cool project you did once, but it’s not what we’re looking for. It’ll help you feel like you’re not just getting kind of dazzled by all of the shiny things on their resume, but you know what to look for, at least what? To prioritize a zafar their experience or specific skills. All right, so a lot of the information that you need you already have. You just start a conversation inside. Exactly. Okay, okay. What? Anything else for the for putting together the job description? Well, another thing that i would suggest and it’s not going to be perfect. Of course you’re still going to want to edit it and make sure it’s, you know, meets your needs is an organization, but i’ve seen very few jobs that have never been, you know, hired for before there’s very few times where someone has posted a job and i thought, wow, i’ve never seen a job like that you know, i never in my life so so knowing that you probably could go to, you know, idealist dot org’s look where there are millions of job postings for nonprofit organizations and look for a job, title or job description similar to what you’re looking for and just see how other organizations have explained that or how they’ve kind of structured some of the, you know, needs and an experience pieces there’s probably many examples out there just to get you started, especially with, you know, that fear of had i don’t want to say this the wrong way, etcetera. You know, it occurs to me this could all apply if you were hiring ah, consultant as well, yes, i was only thinking of, you know, i was only thinking of the employees, but certainly it all applies on the in that respect to consulting. Yeah, and i would even say it applies when you’re bringing in, uh, like, i contract id, you know, someone on an r f way wantto, you know, designer to dio this project or we want to bring in, you know, on organization and agency to kind of help us with this campaign, like, even those kind of larger than one individual consultant, but still outsourced project still using a process like this because if you can tell them nothing but what you want to dio teo to meet your goals, then you will have at least serve yourself well, instead of trying to anticipate all the things that they might be thinking, you know, you’re hiring either the staff person or this contractor, this consultant because they know more than you on those topics, so let them no more than you on those topics and really be clear about why you want to do those project’s, why you need them to do this work anything else around the job description or i think we should move to starting to interview people. Yeah, let’s, start interviewing people. Well, let’s go, all right, so we’ve got these resumes, and of course, we’re now scanning them based on what our needs are making sure that we’re not we’re not getting attracted by shiny things on resumes that have no relevance to what we’re trying to do and what we’re trying to achieve, okay? We were bringing people in, and they’re a lot smarter than us about about the things that we’re trying to hire them for, yes, we’re gonna do so i’ve seen a few different, uh, tactics work well for organizations that really depends on your comfort level, i think, but remembering, of course, that most often or organizations are kind of small enough that the person they’re hiring, whether it’s, a web person or a night person, etcetera isn’t reporting to another technical person, you know, they’re still going to report to maybe the executive director so not feeling that that person has to kind of opt out of the interview process because they don’t know the language again, they do know what all this work is going towards s o they still should be a part of this interview process, especially the the manager, whoever that will be. But i would also encourage people to participate in that interview that are are probably not technical, but will rely on this person, you know, ensuring their systems their great, the development or fund-raising manager is often a great person because they maybe our technical, maybe not, but in many organizations they’re the one’s touching the database the most. And if you’re hiring a technical person who that, you know, maintaining that data basically part of their job again, they might not be the most technical person on staff, but they probably have a deep investment in this tool, working well for them so that they could do their job. So bringing those people in that really care that the tools work well will help in the interview process because, again, even if they don’t know the language, they will be able to test out what it’s like to talk to this person they would be working with you. And if they feel like, you know, they can talk to each other, even if in different languages and still get their points across it’s much better to figure that out and kind of have a feel for what? Talking and working with each other would be like in the interview process than it would be, you know, on day one when they’ve hired, and they’re just getting to meet and realize they can’t talk to each other right versus the she’s kind of condescending to me or, you know, right doesn’t really get me and yes, because you are going to be talking day to day. Once the hyre is made. So how does the person translate what they know the brilliance that they have in there in their niche of technology to the rest of us who were going to be using this technology and hoping it’s all going toe it’s all gonna come together and talk to each other? Exactly. And i like that you use the word translate because i was also going to make a suggestion kind of the other side that i’ve seen folks take in the interviewing process is to find someone that’s kind of a translator or ah ah liaison. So reaching out either to a local non-technical group well, look, look on meet up, there’s. Probably a ton of groups in your city, whether it’s a non-profit tech related group or just, you know, maybe if it’s ah, web person you’re hiring for and you know that you use droop a ll contacting the local drew per droop a ll user group on dh just saying, hey, we’re hiring someone we would love it if we could spend ten minutes on the phone, you know abila volunteer from the group just to help us make sure we have the best questions for this interview, and that way, you kind of bounce the questions that you want to ask, you know, shared the intention of the question and had someone who isn’t. They have no, you, no stake in the game. They’re not applying for the job. They are not part of your organization, that they can say, you know, that’s, probably not the best way to ask it. Or, you know, if i was doing this, i would say it this way so that you feel confident going in your questions, meet your needs, and we’ll speak to this kind of technical component. We gotta go out for a way to go out for a break. And, amy, when we come back, we’ll keep talking about maybe testing and and some onboarding we’ll get that in just a couple of minutes. Stay with us. All right, amy, where? Ah, we’re past the interview stage and ah, we want to well, yeah, we’ve we’ve decided that we want to move forward with a couple of candidates and, uh, test their skills. How are we going to do this? Well, there are a few different options i’ve seen organizations who, when they’ve kind of brought on that translator to discuss, you know, what air the best interview questions that we could craft for our specific job and organization that they’ve also said, are there some tests that could go with some of these questions or, you know, ways that you would suggest we do this and they get it? It really depends on kind of the suite of skills you’re looking for, but i’ve also seen organizations really successfully say cash, we have this board of directors and a couple of them, you know, workin in larger organizations that haven’t hr department could we ask you to tap your hr department and see if they have a standard set of questions or a standard? You know, couples sets of tests that they used in hiring on dh we can modify those and that way, you know? It’s been used towards success before on dh most, you know, most boardmember zehr happy to say, sure, my h r department will share some of that. Are these are these written tests are online tests. Have you seen i’ve? I’ve seen things where it’s online. It would be usually directly following the interview. So we’ve had the interview. You know, we’ve all been at the table talking, and now, you know, way have ah, laptop set up with this page and can you, you know, walk us through how you would? Okay, as part of, you know, okay, it’s, part of an interview. Yeah, okay. And and that so i would say, even if you don’t have a kind of technical components test, you know, tio assess that side of the skills one of the most i would i would say important test to include in that interview process is to have identified from your staff what staff considered to be, like emergency all hands on deck with a technical issue. So for many organizations, that means, you know, it’s, our end of year fund-raising campaign and the donation page is not working, you know, donate now, button isn’t working, we just sent out an e mail to ten thousand people and donate now doesn’t work that’s like critical all hands on deck. This is an emergency. And so in the interview, actually sharing, you know, this would be an emergency tow us on dh staff would would be communicating in-kind of a crisis mode style walk us through if you came into the office that morning, you know, you walked in the door and a bunch of staff were right there and said, oh, my gosh, the donation pages down the donate now button isn’t working. You have to get this six right away. What would you dio? And if you have a candidate for your job, you know, start coming back with very technical language, even in the interview, you can anticipate that’s how they’re going to, you know, talk in that moment and if staff immediately feel like, well, i’m not getting information, i need him. I’m still frustrated, i’m still in crisis mode. I don’t know what’s happening, you know, it’s probably a good measure of what it would be like if instead they’re saying, great, this is exactly what we’re going to dio this is how long it’s going to take you know, this is when we’re going to be able to know if it’s fixed and people feel like, okay, i know what’s happening even if i can’t fix it, someone is fixing it and it’s going to be okay, you know, it’s it’s an easier way to deal in that actual crisis and maybe a better way to talk through kind of a test quote unquote, in an interview without having to set up non-technical, you know, actual demonstration, okay? You said there were a couple of ways of going about this any any others? Is that it? Is that it? Okay, so let’s say those were probably the most frequent that i see they’re, you know, talking through a situation or including something technical, you know, actually showing them some systems and seeing if they i would say looking that the systems is i’ve at least seen it happen more often when organizations have a little bit more of a custom set up, you know, they’ve done a lot, teo modify their database or they’ve got a website kind of cms that custom to them, and they want to see you. Know, hey, you probably not seen this before because it’s kind of our set up, why don’t you poke around and let’s see how it goes? We just have about a minute and a half left for for onboarding you have some advice about bringing somebody in? Yeah, i think that there’s this, um, sometimes organizations have this feeling that they’ve hired this little person because they’re totally different than everyone else, and they’re just going to go sit at their desk and be technical and somehow do everything all by themselves. But ultimately what that means is they’ve never been oriented toe what everyone does and why they do it and why they need to be maintaining these systems the way they are. So i would say onboarding needs to really focus on including this new technical hyre buy-in all kinds of team meetings, campaign meetings, anywhere where they can really be exposed to the way folks, we’re talking about the tools they used, and they’re able tto learn oh, that people don’t know that we could really set up, you know, the database to do that report for them i can i can help here so they feel. Like they’re a contributing part of the team and not just someone kind of keeping everything running in the background, we’re going to leave it there. Or what would you do? No, no. You know, i decided to just pull out cem cem tips that i’d be using if i were just talking to somebody or just doing a speaking engagement, just sort of the top sites that i think people should be aware of. So i brought a few those with me today. If you want me to talk about yes, you’re our diet of dirt cheap. So talk about talk about a sight. Okay, great. So, you know, i’m a fan of talked about this before setting up alerts, so i wanted to remind everyone that you set up those google alert it’s and, uh, the other two that i’ve been actually getting a lot more hits on since i set it up for your show to test it actually was talk walker dot com and mentioned dot net, i get so many more hits on that than i do on google alerts and ah, on the reason why i had tested it a couple of years ago on your show was because i i’d read an article that google might be doing away with their alert service at some point, right? We talked about it, and even even if they hadn’t done away with it, it was not very robust, right? It was disappointing. Yeah, yeah. And then the results continue. Tio go down, down, down. So i i i definitely love the talk walker dot com. And so my my advice around, though, using those would be set him up for your top ten donors, you know, put their names in in an alert so that if something comes up about them, you can call them, congratulate them, you know, hopefully not commiserates, but okay. And i’ve since we talked about it i’ve been using both of those i used talk walker and mentioned dot net different ones because they give each allow you a couple for free. You have different alert set up on each of those cool. What else? Well, so well, i thought we would also spend a few minutes talking about nosa knows a search because it’s ah it’s definitely one of those sites that has both a a free and a fee based component to it. So for free, you could do some foundation research on knows that site, but it’s also a great compilation, ifyou’re doing individual research, esso they have various levels where you could either pay for a month or pay for a year. So it’s a good pay as you go type of service. So that’s why i kind of think it falls under that dirt cheap. Okay, it’s a little more about noser so knows that enables you to go in and input an individual’s name, for example, and be able to actually find out if they’ve given any major gifts to any organizations. So it’s an opportunity to as you’re doing in depth donorsearch research on those heiner hyre net worth individuals find out where they’re donating gifts tomorrow. If this sounds a valuable stuff, right? Well, i’m thinking about about how we might apply it to our plan. Giving marketing. Yeah, absolutely. I would really like to know more about our donors. Yeah, absolutely. So, it’s it’s a pretty valuable service. So it’s ah, i think it falls under blackbaud not if i’m not mistaken, but it’s certainly an opportunity for you to check it out because they have both free and be based stuff. There were the hearings, the senate judiciary committee hearings for that supreme court justice. And they were they were asking him a lot of questions, and i thought, oh, this guy is never going to get confirmed. But then, you know, supreme court justice, meatloaf did a great thing. He started singing hey started singing paradise by the dashboard light and then senator elizabeth warren remember she like god and meet lo slap and did they do? With, you know i want wait no that’s a different song, but paradise by the dashboard light that’s a cool one that’s a great and that’s s o they were singing, you know, trump really? You know, when it comes to non-profits especially like a you know, he just teaches wrecked things, didn’t and he also wrecked a lot of our beautiful national landmarks. Well on, give the guy credit. We have that water slide going down the grand canyon, right? The trump water slide that’s the grand canyon on a park and he you know, he’s. He did get his face put on mount rushmore, although they have chiseled it off. So that was good. I gave ten dollars to that on go fund me. Remove remove the fifth face removed the room. Remember it. The billboards removed the fifth bullet. They gotta go fund me dot com ten dollars. All my friends, i put it on facebook. Remember facebook? I know so so. And sometimes you get into these like dramas with people from high school where people like criticized it was terrible, it’s that now we don’t need no way have that mental telepathy thing where we all just know, whatever i was thinking it was cool for a run. I mean, it brought people together, you know, i i deserve whatever that guy’s name was, i can’t remember, but, you know, he made a lot of money, but it just didn’t just in last, i mean, the advertising took over and people just obviously migrated away. Yeah, and now we have the mind meld, and so we just, like, i just think something like tony is going to take us out to lunch and then it happens i don’t have to put it on facebook like, hey, maybe tony will take us to lunch, i just think it remember that remember that trump presidential library with the with a swim up bar and the song? Yeah, yeah, and then he had the follicle transplant center in the presidential library, remember? And and you know what? This is the first thing i remember about trump that really affected non-profits because a lot of my clients really got mad, so he came up with that whole directory of, like, best practices for non-profits and he said and he said, and i and i remember him being on tv. He was announcing. It goes yet, you know. So this is the number one thing. I think you should offer. Fi, you development directors and hyre showgirls. That’s what that would be best pregnant, raised more money that way, if you had, if you had the showgirls, its development, people waving the future because we’re headed back, we’re going back. We’re headed back cool, oh my god, wow, and, you know, we learned so much we learned we learned about when we went to the future, we learned about the past, we learned what happened when oh, no, no, it was that government can be. It can’t be that had to be like the mushrooms. I don’t think so, yeah, it’s not going to have the crystals, but that was a cool that was a cool look at the future. One of the things that were really excited about is that board source has listed advocacy as a keyboard responsibility earlier this week, and they just updated their their seminal book on dad possibilities of non-profit boards and for the first time, advocacy became a keyboard responsibility and we think that’s that’s just great. So that’s one big advocacy, okay, we’ve talked about that lots of times, and maria simple and i have talked about boards being advocates, right? Marie? Absolutely being friendraising er’s advocates out in the community mirriam you and i have talked about that a lot online ambassadors, right? Yeah, absolutely. There, there you’re you’re they should be it at least your biggest and best right? What else do you know about? Oh, sorry. God. Sorry. Uh, i was just going to concur with both of you on that and apart from the friendraising and fund-raising some serious issues that might affect all non-profits and we’ve been kind of leading some advocacy efforts on that, both on the state level, for us with cal non-profits on the national level with the national council was non-profits and some others. As well. And then some of those provisions air, like the charitable deduction provisions that are congress is looking at right now and and where those air going. There’s, charitable registration requirements, better being promulgated by the state. Um, that are becoming a little bit more scary for non-profits if some of these things go through, it would be like if you fail to, you know, be missed a filing and you continue to operate, we might hold your board members liable for needing to operate on that suspension period. Also, scary things happening that that non-profits have a chance to push back on. And when, when you’ve got board members and others, you know who are willing to advocate on your behalf, beneficiaries, that that you’re serving, it can really make it. So so this tip has to do with visiting your local library. You’ll remember i’m a huge proponent, our local lagers. And so one of the online database is that i really love that the library is called reference yusa. Esso. I really wanted to bring that back as a reminder for everyone. Because it’s a source that will allow you to really find business owners in the community find businesses themselves in the community. And you can actually you can get is as focused as looking for them within a specific zip code. You can open it up to a county wide search. A state wide search. So it’s really? I think it’s. A great way to do what i like to call that proactive prospecting. So if you’re trying to get some new lists and maybe if people to send invitations to within specific industries and invitations for maybe an upcoming walk or a gala or something that you’re having, i think that that’s a really terrific resource. Great one reference, yusa reference. Use a dot com. Well, if you go to reference, use a dot com. It is a fee based resource, but many, many libraries will carry it. It’s usually accessible, right, using your your bar code on your library card, you can access it for free. So, you know, in keeping with our free theme, of course, i know you love the library’s. Yeah, what else is on your list? We’re in austin, texas, at the convention center topic now is visual media for a social world. What you need to know about the future of social media my guests are jessica williams, she’s account director for pritchard communications. Emma chadband, online outreach associate for p i and jenna sorority, the account manager for pritchard communications. Ladies, welcome. Thank you. Don’t you have all of you? We’re talking about social and visual. Jessica, what are non-profits not quite getting one hundred percent? Oh, i wouldn’t say they’re not getting anything. I think they’re very well aware of what needs to happen. Okay often times, it’s just a matter of having the resource is the budget and the time available to do. What needs to be done on the right channels? How should they be? How should they be allocating resources or maybe prioritizing let’s talk about that? Well, that really depends on the goals and objectives for that particular non-profit and the target audience is they’re trying to reach so thinking about those three things in regards to the message is you’re trying to spread so who can i target? Where are they and why is this important to them and what channels are gonna help me reach that audience? All right, uh, you want to add anything to our to our overview? Yeah, i would just say that it all comes as just closing it all comes back to strategy and goals on and that’s how you should choose what networks were going to be on and what, how you’re engaging on on all of them and so generous. We want to be avoiding shiny object syndrome on right? Just because something is new doesn’t mean we ought to be there exactly were all about, you know, paying attention to strategy and the reason we’re here at intent today, eh, is because we find that a lot on non-profits are really intimidated by these visual media tools? Yeah, yeah, i mean, there’s a lot out there and there’s always other one sprouting up s o we’re kind of here today to home that in on dh share kind of the important important facets of each of those and share how non-profits shouldn’t be intimidated by those on drily, you know, feel free to explore them and play around with them. Okay? Let’s, let’s not start with the most popular facebook, etcetera something that’s pretty popular growing vihn don’t we start with vine diesel? Six second videos, let’s start let’s keep with you, jenna, what are you thoughts there? Well, so, you know vine was acquired by twitter in two thousand twelve eso we’ve seen in the past three years that it’s really making optimization sze that make the channel really appealing toe organization the non-profits they’re letting users upload videos directly from their camera roll, they’re adding different editing features that make it really user friendly. S o we’re seeing that non-profits air really seen success on vine, and i think emma can’t talk even more about how her organization has seen success with driving traffic to its block, okay? Good, emma what’s piela are doing well? We’ve had a lot of success in vine on the thing i always tell people about that platform is the value is not necessarily on the channel it’s with the content that you can create making videos really expensive and time consuming. But if you use vine it’s cheap and quick, so it’s much easier to make a six second video and vine than it is to make a six minute video for youtube on dh. So we have made these great little videos on buy-in and then we’ll embed them in our block, and any time we’ve done that, we get, like, double the traffic and tons of positive comments and a ton of engagement. But what if we have no idea what to do with with six seconds of video? You go ahead, let’s just stick with you. I just don’t know what i can do in six seconds. Well, i think it comes down to your non-profits mission and what you’re trying to tell people like i spoke to someone after our session from another reproductive health non-profit who’s saying we just constantly work in data, we don’t have any. Like people that film or anything like that. But if you have something like data, you can do a great visual ization and vine people, even news organizations have used buy-in like cnn to do like cool graphs and stop motion videos. You can really do anything in that platform. It’s really great for creativity, okay, jessica, if we’re thinking about vine, where do we where do we start our thinking to decide whether we should spend time there? Well, it again goes back. Tio, what are you trying to accomplish? Some most non-profits, you know, one of their big, overarching goals is fund-raising so are they trying to retain a donor base or they trying to attract new donorsearch in that example, find might be a great platform to reach a younger audience, particularly is emma mentions the content itself can be the platform allows for a lot of creativity, and so obviously younger generations enjoy kind of that creative spent on content, so it might be a great place to attract new donors to engage new audiences. So but to your point of being strategic, if you’re trying to engage younger audiences, correct that’s not an objective of yours than maybe vine isn’t appropriate, correct? Or maybe i mean in emma’s example that she uses in our presentation is ah, great example of birth contraception, and it appeals to me and i’m thirty four years old, so and it’s a vine video, so it doesn’t necessarily have to be a younger audience. It was just again goes back to your goals and objectives for your organization. Okay, so our first place to be thinking when we’re considering something is how does it fit? What? What? What do we feel we can do with it? How do you know those? But when you’re asking oh, i mean, yeah, sure. I mean, we could do six second videos on we have people let’s say, you know, look, make the sort of the simplest case and take wuebben let’s, take let’s, take a shelter for for domestic violence victims and survivors. We have that. And if we could do it anonymously and brovey but how do we know whether we can? We can use it successfully for the work we’re trying to achieve. Well, i think you have to look a tte your budget like, do you have the staff time? Available. Do you have the the amount of time it takes? I mean, emma, the video she shares in our presentation actually took her three hours to create. So, do you have three hours to make a great video it’s up to you and your organization? So it’s really hard for me to advise or any of us to advise any particular, like general set of ideas without knowing a particular situation are looking at your strategy in your goals may be just what questions should we be asking? Well, regarding target audiences, what are their behaviours? So are they online? You know, maybe if you’re reaching policy makers or partners, those audiences air very different. So thinking about, um what kind of online content do they consume? What? You know what topic or issue area are you focused on? Can you know, is that appropriate for a video like you talked about a shelter for domestic violence? Is that violence? Is that something you know? How can we capture that on video? In a positive light? How can we instill a call to action in that video to mobilize our audience to to action. So, it’s really? I think. You know, we keep going back to strategy and messaging, and what are you trying to mobilize your audience to do and is video and is mine and effective tool to reach that? And, you know, of course do we have the resources to do it? Okay, almost sounds like you want to you want to look like you want to add something about vine? No, i just think it really does come down to what? What is your awful angle and that’s with any platform it could be? We’re actually looking into launching our instagram and we’ve just re branded and we have a new logo, and as part of that process, we found out a lot of people don’t understand what we do and how we work. So we’re launching instagram not because we think it will give us a lot of traffic or because we’ll get a ton of followers, but because that’s another platform to people so people can see photos of where we work, who were working with how we’re doing it. So it really is like a storytelling tool and that khun go for any platform, you have to have an offline goal before. You can figure out what you want to do online, okay, excellent. So we can drill down to these things we can weaken, at least give advice on what you need to be thinking about what questions you should be asking. Ok, you’re tuned to non-profit radio. Tony’s guests are expert in crowdfunding, mobile giving event fund-raising direct mail and donor cultivation. Really, all the fund-raising issues that make you wonder, am i doing this right? You can also learn maura, the chronicle website, philanthropy dot com fund-raising fundamentals the better way. Right, so we seem to transition to instagram very conveniently. Thank you. Um, let’s make clear instagram versus pinterest, jessica, go ahead. So instagram is actually a publishing tool so you can take the photo right in the app on your phone and then from there, share it with your network’s, whereas, pinch, this is more of a storage and sharing tools, so you’re actually curating images from, say, a website or a block, and then pending that toe boards on pinterest for other followers to see the images. Once they click on that link, then they’ll go to their website. So unlike something like instagram, where you’re sharing to multiple social media channels, pinterest is more of a hub to manage the visual content that you have on something like, well, your website, your block or instagram we know you are are most of the users of pinterest still women? Is that still they are? Yes, they’re predominantly women about thirteen percent of men, so we did see some growth and there’s like eighty seven percent of users who are women and creating percentage meant yes, okay, they’re pretty affluent as well, that’s, the other kind of defining demographic. For pinterest so okay, um, you want toe share advice around what you might be able to achieve with interest in the general sense? Yeah, pinterest is a great brand building platform, so brands really rely on visual cues to build their communities, and pinchers is a great platform for visual representation of your work, so you could use it to showcase some data points and infographic some inspiration quotes over a beautiful photo or some photos of your organisation in action that you know your followers might be interested in. So those were some great ways to kind of share community. Another really cool thing is an interest will drive traffic back to your block or your website, so if the user clicks twice on an image, they’ll go back to your website and buzzfeed sites pinterest as its second largest driver of traffic to its web site, so it has the potential to drive tons of traffic, and this is because pens live a lot longer than other social media posts. So a pen on pinterest has a life span of about two months. Where’s a tweet has a life, has a life span of about three hours. So i don’t even think it was that long for a tweet, but okay, um, general, i kind of feel like i gave short shrift to instagram and i didn’t mean to do that. What more can we say about you? Serve instagram? Well, we found that again, like vine instagram is making a lot of optimization sze to the platform that makes it appealing to organization, so it just added video capability in two thousand thirteen it’s also added just added verified badges, which is that little blue checkmark that you often see on twitter to help users reach the authentic accounts that they’re seeking. Um, and what we like about instagram is that’s it’s, a really strong storytelling platform, so not only can you upload a photo or video, but it equips non-profit communicators to really be a visual mediapro instagram gives you the enhancements and filters you need to really make the image or video pop, and then you can add these other features like hashtags teo, jump into existing conversations online, you can tag others to engage with partners or policy makers, so by created by adding all these features, you’re really allowing the user to click on different aspects of the photo on drily explore the story more deeply than if they were just scrolling through in viewing a photo me either if you want to add anything about that instagram no, we’re good on instagram. Okay, uh, what about storify? We talked about story five who wants to explain what storify is for those who listeners who may not know emma, you you haven’t even heard from you? Basically, it allows people to follow a story through social media, so basically our organization will use it a lot. When we host tweet chats, we’ll we’ll we’ll go through and storify all the tweets so that if you miss the tweet chat, you can still view the whole thing in store if i’m right. That means this zoo aggregating based on your, uh, your criteria brings a bunch of media together and you’re using it for twitter chats, right? I guess everybody who use the hashtag or something yeah, all the tweets we can keep them all in one place and it’s easy to follow along. Okay, you can also curate from facebook from various social networks. It’s really kind of built out now, so you can carry it from all sorts of places, okay, they can post on your block. So that’s a great way, tio, if someone wasn’t at this event, you could say he was the conversation as it happened on social media and here’s what you missed in a block post. So that’s, another great way to do so. Excellent recap, all right. And i see a lot of news outlets using storify also bring in other other channels, other outlets, coverage, things like that. Okay, um, no other before we get to the big players, twitter, facebook and he’s smaller don’t be necessary, lesser known, but any smaller channels we ought to talk about. Well, in our presentation, we also touched on tumbler, which is a micro blogging platform that realized really heavily on visuals, specifically short form visuals. So we like tumbler because it really accommodates different types of content. So unlike facebook, where you only are able to post four types of posts a link, a photo of video or a text posts tumbler accommodates beyond that so it’s it works really well with gifts as well as audiocasting ups our kind of short snapshots of quotes or excerpts so it’s a really great tool or platform for non-profits who are looking to publish a diverse mix of content now, jenna, you mentioned gifts on non-profit radio we have george in jail, which which i didn’t just make up, but i do love a liberation, but we do have jargon jail, but probation comes pretty easy, so you better explain everybody may not know what a jiffy yeah, thanks for reminding me they’re animated images. So you know this kid often times you’ll see a clip for, like maybe three second clip from parks and rec episode with a quote overlaying on the jif so it’s really just an an animated image on oftentimes they’re used as a reaction. So you know if if you’re having a sad day or something it’s not uncommon, tio go on tumbler and see that there’s jeff’s kind of evoking this emotion so good hyre kayman jessica, anything you want to add about tumbler, i think non-profits are just beginning to really experiment with tumbler and it’s been fun to see what people are coming up with. One of the big differences is that people don’t comment that often on tumblr it’s kind of part of the community there, so if you’re going to comment, i think the best practices generally the community likes humor there, not goingto you’re not going to see really serious templar comments and then also the tags on tumbler different than any other network and that they use spaces between the words and they’re also they’ll have a ton of tags on any given post, which is different than like instagram will usually have, like three and probably no more. So it’s definitely a little different than anything else we’ve worked with, okay? And you have to be conscious of tagging and the way the community what the community is expecting, yeah, and that can go for help. We’re going to find your content, right? And that can go for any platform. Every platform is a little bit different and has a little bit different community norms and voices, and so you want to be familiar with that before you engage. Okay? Jessica, you’re shot anything tumbler somewhere is a great place to bleach younger demographic, so if you’re if you’re non-profits looking, tio reach a younger audience, maybe to grow that millennial or even the generation. After donorsearch tumblers a great place to do that and we’re seeing organizations use tumbler really effective ways. One of our favorites is on being, which is ah, public radio conversation project. They used tumbler as one of the extensions of their kant arika which is their website, and they do a fantastic job if anybody’s looking for an example of how to use tumbler. Okay, actually, that’s a great good. Thank you for examples. Um, any any other examples of good good tumbler blog’s and then wants to shout out? I think we included a smithsonian in our presentation. They just have really compelling images. The reason we like on being is because they have a really nice balance between texts and visuals. So it’s more, i think, accessible to non-profits who maybe don’t have a ton of resource is too turnout images or video on a daily basis, you know, texas fine. Just short bites of content. Okay, okay. Let me, uh, anything you want to know. Uh, let’s, let’s. Stick with smaller platforms before we get to the huge ones and the others that i’m not thinking of or i don’t know there, please, category way we had a question on our presentation about read it and that’s something about r e d d i t right? Yeah, and a lot of people are curious about it read it is, i think of it is like the wild west of the internet because there’s like not a lot of too many of those left. Yeah, there’s not a lot of best practices or guidelines for non-profits and in fact, i think the community doesn’t really like organizational users, so let’s explain what it is. Oh, read it is like aggregation site primarily for news or other current things, and it’s basically just a big list of links and it’s divided into thousands of tinier communities called subreddit it’s, which are like mitch interests and they’re part of the bigger side is a hole, okay? And please continue. You were talking about what the community expects her doesn’t yeah, i like there’s. The reddick community doesn’t really like organizational users, so they’re they’re sort of motto is that you, khun b, a reddit user who happens to work for an organisation, but they don’t like when an organization has has its own reddit user name s o the best way to engage on reddit is from a personal account, usually because you want to be engaging in other communities that aren’t just from your non-profit okay, excellent, obviously important to know you’ll be scorned before you even get started. Yeah, you khun get band! They wanted to quickly get bad, but it is a great place for i mean, we’ve seen huge amounts of traffic from reddit like other platforms, we can get it a couple hundred a couple thousand visits, but read it once we got ten thousand visits from read it in the night from one piece of contacts that because these subreddit sir so narrowly and closely defined that’s part of it it’s also just one of the biggest drivers of traffic on the internet. Now it is a huge site it’s been around, i believe, for about five years, i think, and there’s just so many people on there, and if you find the right subreddit that that corresponds with your mission and your non-profit they’re going to be really excited to see your content, okay, anything you want to add about read it well, i was just going to add that i thought. Emma was going to cover this. Someone in our presentation asked about snapchat and that’s, not just jenna. Did you have anything you want to head about? Ready? No. Okay, you go. Okay, please just go. Snapchat is keep a little order. You’re doing great. You’re not a kiss. Wait a little while, so you’ve got to rein it in. So snapchat is ah, very new platform and it’s used by much younger generations, but emma mentioned during our presentation that do something dot or gets doing a great job with snapchat. I don’t know if you want to talk about that more, but they’ve had they i remember reading encased anywhere they had, like a snapchat scavenger hunt on and there’s i believe the guy who’s running it is called the snap, stur he’s like really the pioneer of non-profits on snapchat but he was basically like snapping pictures of himself. It was around valentine’s day snapping pictures of himself around the city with different signs corresponding to what they were doing. And it was a really successful campaign. But yeah, i would love for you guys should look it up. Let’s do something that organ i’ve already had. A mole? Are you finger on? Artie’s been on twice? I’m talking about do something and also talking about t m i they’re consulting arm. Yeah, you know, we didn’t do snapchat. We didn’t. We didn’t explain what it is. Jenna, we haven’t heard from your recent you want to explain what snapchat is? Let me see if i can do this in a concise way. It is a photo sharing app that lets users share temporary photos meaning and i believe you can do video now on it tio lets users take a photo and basically you khun send it to your friend for three seconds for ten seconds and then after that it disappears. That’s snap and that’s what we think exactly, young people like it because it’s ephemeral, it’s like a conversation, right? I’ve seen it used a lot among young people. They share their reactions, so if someone sends a text will respond with the snapchat of their face making an emotion reaction. Teo now, right now i have a choice of if i want to share of the action i gotta choose between read it and he snapchat this is by then my reaction is dead? I’m overreacted already. I think you’re really working it and rises again that especially among millennials and even younger generations that, you know, just getting communications, just getting more visual so people want to see faces they want to engage with people s o text messaging isn’t even, you know, that’s might go away, people really want to communicate face-to-face andre uses nap jet as a vehicle to do so. Okay, excellent, i love that way just have, like two minutes left and we haven’t even talked about facebook or twitter yet. Ah, but i’m goingto since i like twitter a lot, i have a lot of fun with twitter, just like a minute and a half or so who wants to? I want to talk about zoho strategy for twitter? Go ahead, jessica. So twitter is a social networking platform that allows you just in tweets, which are one hundred forty characters long and no more hashtags are extremely popular on twitter it’s fact it’s critical where they originated, may allow you to engage in conversation outside of your immediate conversation that you’re having so you know, it’s common to see multiple hashtags and one tweet tagging users. Is really important if you want to be a part of the community and engage, you can geo tags so you can tie the location from what you’re tweeting, you can now video dirt. They just rolled out a video recording capability on twitter last week, so that’s really important to know. And then, just recently, it was announced that google is going to start searching twitter in their algorithm. So when you search something online, really that’s lee’s tweets, they’re gonna teach will be search results, tweets will be searchers. Oh my gosh, when does that start? Well, it says it’s in the process, last i heard so, but that was like two weeks ago, so it was probably an updated but twitters here to stay, and its growth has kind of slowed, but they’re rolling out these new capability. So, you know, it’s it’s going to be around it’s a great way for organizations just to be a part of a conversation, especially when tools like facebook are slowly becoming less effective for non-profits and other organizations. How many people are here? How many hotel don’t have? Okay, well, we sold out all of our blocks in six hotels like, two months ago. S o i’m sure we’re in lots of hotels and registrations. I’ll get the latest numbers tomorrow morning for the plenary. But where we’re pretty close to two thousand and cem stats i shared this morning at the plenary we’ve got forty seven states, sixteen countries cool. We have twenty four people here. Who? This is their tenth or mohr ntc. Oh, this has been going longer than i realized. Yeah. Somebody said two thousand seven was the first that’s wrong. Oh, no, the conference. It wasn’t called the ntc, but it was happening and that was the reason and ten was formed was to be the organization to maintain the convenience for this country was a community built around the events. Yes. Oh, excellent. We were just talking. I just had a panel of four. Even though we only have three mikes we started panel for on community built. That was exactly again. Your membership director? Yeah. Was part of it. Yes. So anton was formed in two thousand, so we normally use that as the kind of formalization of the conference. Because it, you know, after intend was formed, there was a riel process and, you know, support for an actual conference verses just smaller community convenience. And before that before that the community was still they were called round ups. They were still coming together, mostly regionally, people that worked in in non-profits or four non-profits you know, from the outside as technologists trying to say, please tell me i’m not the only person who does this, you know, and meeting up. And it was that community who said it’s not sustainable by ourselves to try and keep meeting up, you know, we need support and there needs to be something that’s organizing all of us and that’s when microsoft and certain in a well gave the initial funding and formed and ten and ten outstanding, the community was yes, the community that so and so so encouraging community building. Exactly built itself around exactly around an event, and it knew it needed mohr. Right? Exactly. Be sustainable. Yeah. Love it. Love it. Okay. Um, let’s, talk a little about in ten. Ok? If your opportunity to shout out it’s a very, very welcoming organization, you have tons of re sources and events and things for nonmembers. Let’s start with non members. Yeah, yeah, well, i think that we take being a c three fairly seriously. And we recognize that even though we have membership as a way of making sure we’re better able to know who’s in the community, what resource is they need have channels to communicate with them? You know, membership just gives us direct kind of entry toe all all of that data and knowing what to do programmatically. But like i said, we take being a c three. Seriously, we want everyone to access what we’re doing resource is we’re creating research that we’re doing and our mission isn’t just to serve members remember, our mission is that every non-profit will be able to use technology strategically, so that requires everything be as accessible as it can be. And it is not an organization on ly for technologists no let’s, dispel that myth. Go ahead, exactly. I mean, i think, you know, when we were formed it it probably felt much more technical because the community members that that were in the community, right and back in the nineties, ah lot of folks didn’t really think about technology and all of all of the departments of the organization, you know, we’re not everyone in the organization even had a computer necessarily. So now you know, many years later, everyone an organization is using email the web, you know, many of our our tools or software is actually up in the cloud. We have documents that were sharing so everyone needs to be using technology, whether that’s deep in the database or over here in html or whatever it is. So we want to make sure that everyone across an organization has access to knowledge and resource is but also to other people like them, people that have the same job is them in another organization, his most non-profits, you know, were small enough that there’s only one person that does that thing so it can feel really isolated. You know, i’m the only one that knows how to send a mass email from our system s o making sure people can connect with each other and other organizations to find that one person in the other organization we can complain together, but we can also, you know, help each other a lot, and a lot of this is also live meet ups. Yeah, they’re local clubs throughout the world, but you have international club. Yeah, yeah. So there’s a club in new york and you’ve even been all right? Yeah. So there’s club in new york for trial, and in portland, i tested google glass. Oh, how was that? Loved it. It was a while ago. Chris tuttle, you know, was was one of the beta testers selected by google, and i had fun with it. You know, i talked to it. You move your eyes and it did things. I don’t remember that part talking to it. I like the verbal commands, but yes, so i’ve been i’ve been a couple of times i’ve been another couple, yeah, yeah, so there’s there’s, tech clubs all across the u s, canada, poland, etcetera, okay, yeah, excellent. So that’s the online live ok, so now membership s so very open your worship, his membership is really cheap. Share share its membership. I try to avoid the word cheap because it it is valuable, jordan, it is affordable, affordable very because we want it. We don’t want the membership to be the barrier to this information. And like i said before, membership tow us isn’t the only way that we’re going to be a sustainable organization. Revenue wise. You know, membership tow us is really a way to say these were the people that get it. And these are the people that are committed to using technology. So if we have to make a decision between something we’ve randomly thought up on staff, you know, to do for our next report or something that group of members wants, we noted default to what the membership want, um, and it helps us plan and understand what we’re doing. Of course, there’s not just a couple members. There’s about ten thousand, so it’s not a small group of people to talk to. But it’s it’s, you know, smaller. Then i guess the rest of the world, if we were trying to listen to everyone and meghan in the session, she was in on community building made the point that there’s often surveying your equally survey. Okay, but all right, well, you won’t say cheap, but it’s really it’s really cheap. The low price. Okay, what is it for people who might like to be members? Yes. Oh, well, so the price is based on your operating budget. So it’s starts really low on dh goes up, but i don’t think the highest that it goes is about three. Fifty and that’s for organised for huge organization. Exactly, exactly. And it’s for unlimited staff. Fifty or seventy five dollars? Yeah, i know. You have to tell you a little. Hasn’t oh, it’s seventy five. You do know. Okay, your small organization, five hundred thousand volts boardmember yet every staff person could be a member of our organization. Not per person. Exactly. I won’t say that again. It’s per organization doesn’t matter how big or small you are. It’s, not per person. Yeah, very. Welcoming. Yeah, welcome. Okay. All right. And what? What can what can members expect beyond accessing resources in the membership category? So, of course you’re going to get discounted registration to conferences like the auntie si on and then our other conference, the leading change summit in the fall that is going to an annual now. Yet last year was the first. Last year was the first, and it did well, this leading change yet. And this year, we will be in washington dc in september, the thirteenth through the sixteenth. Okay, yeah. Leading changes. Cool, it’s. Like a little digression. Toby okay. What’s leading change summit about well, you know, we already talked about how the ntc has been going. Basically since sanson ten has been going and it’s exactly. And it’s space. Where really? I mean, every every kind of organization, every size of organization, all of the different technology providers, all the service roads. I mean, this is the conference for everybody and there’s currently, we looked at it this morning, seventeen sessions per times lot. You know, there’s, just so much that happens here and it’s really a place where people come because they want to. Meet people, they want to meet up with people they already know they want to find that person that can help them on, and they want to go to los lots of sessions. But that doesn’t mean that there’s a lot of time where you’re not talking to people going to different sessions, going around to all the different parties we wanted to create another space that let people who maybe didn’t necessarily need thio learn things in a session. They already had the ideas they just needed people to poke holes in those ideas or people tto give them the push they needed to really try it out. So the leading change seven unlike the ntc, with two thousand people leading change, summit has about a couple hundred three hundred people it’s purposely small because there are no sessions, it is ah facilitated process. So you come in with your ideas or your challenges or this thing that you’ve been driving you crazy and you don’t know how to get over it at your organization on through those three days have the opportunity to work with trained experts, facilitators and everyone else that’s there to say this is what? I want to do help me tear it apart. So i make it better. And the leading change summit ends with an idea accelerator, so people can formally throw out an idea. Have people joined their team and help make it better throughout the day? And at the end of the day, you can pitch for riel prices. So organizations, air receiving software, other technology they’re receiving. Probono branding probono strategic advice. All of those pieces come to projects that are voted on at the end of the day by everyone in the room, so that they can really become riel. Okay, leading change, some it’s going to washington, dc. Oh, yeah, and they’re their community lead, so we don’t necessarily say there should be a community of practice on this topic and we just create it instead, we wait for a community member to say they want to have that community, and we encourage them to have at least one other co leader so that you don’t feel like you know you’re on you. Yeah, they have two people do it myself exactly, and so there’s normally too. I think one of the communes of practice of it has five organizer’s and they have an online group. Some of them have a weekly twitter chat that’s public, some of them have monthly community calls, phone calls where people call in, others do full webinars really self directed. I’m totally self directed, we we provide those platforms so you’re using and tens webinar platform so you don’t have to pay for it is a community group where our phone line, whatever, and we of course help with promotion or making sure people know about the community of practice and like you said, super wide range there’s community of practice for women and technology there’s a community of practice for people who use droop a ll as a web platform. So you know, everything in between there was some conversation about starting one in podcasting. Yes, there was on the show that yeah. And you have been hearing? Yeah, that was from a listener. But then you had been getting some interest. Independent? Yeah. Did. Did a podcasting community practice get started? I what i remember is that i think they were going to start after the ntc s. I think so, folks, we’re going to try and meet up here in person. Yeah, but there’s definitely. Maybe maybe people are taking your lead. They like this on ly audio thing on. They want to meet up. They want to start making them from them. Certainly do. Well, podcasting xero latto getting a lot of popular press now. Yeah, i’ve been doing it for a half year. Exactly. I feel like an early adopter. Finally, somebody right. Finally sides. Great hair early, which i have sixteen. I had a past you patch of gray here, right? Right here on my left temple. Really? Sixteen years old. Yeah, i got but so aside from that now i’ve actually, early adopted something by choice. Write what i know. Yes, i love the audio format. Although we brought video to ntc. Yes, of course. Way i found a great local videographer. Okay, i’ll shut him out. West shepherd, he’s our videographer and and you know multi-channel yeah, because i’m always i’m most thing to you advice exam often encouraging multi-channel engagement. Exactly what’s your own what’s your own history and end ten going back before membership director when i first knew you when you first joined this show. Yeah, membership director what’s your own history. I’ve been and ten member for many years i was part of the community i actually used to be based before new york, and before london, i was back in portland and started the portland tech club that actually still exist today. However, many years later, oh yeah, i was still been organized, so i started that grew back in two thousand seven in portland, and then a year later moved to london, started the tech club, they’re moved to new york, helped with the tech club it was already going, and then when i moved back to portland in summer twenty thirteen, helped again with the portland tech club, even though i’ve been all these years and whole, you know, cycles of organizer’s had gone through and yeah, it was pretty cool to see there was still going, and the communities can use your baby. Yeah, what year was that? Portland you started two thousand seven. I started the club. Okay, that was really your beginning of ah, of having a membership did you know i was already a member, but that’s when i had my, you know, kind of formal active role because i was an organizer tell me more about, um, what are the types of events are there you? Uh, yeah, we have lots of different i mean, we we gravitate towards online things just because they’re more accessible, he doesn’t you don’t to fly anywhere you want to pay for a hotel, you know? So we do a lot that’s online or we try and make things accessible online. So, you know, the ntc has thirty sessions recorded and uploaded for people who aren’t here, but we also have what we call labs, and they’re you know, they’re not a full conference or just one day, and they normally have a capacity of only forty or fifty people, but they’re on all day we or shop hands on doing doing in a really strategy or planning work. So we’ll walk you through how to create your evaluation plan. How do you go from knowing what your mission is to what happens to be in your database to what should be in your database and what you want to be measuring? Or how do you create a campaign plan? You know, those kinds of things will do those in labs on we have to think we have about eight of them this year. We’ve already had one that was on technical project management. That sounds a little nerdy, but it was saying, you know, even if you’re not, even if you’re not techie, if you’re going to do a website redesign, how do you how long does that handle? What? How much does it cost? I mean, how do you how do you know how? T exactly? Yeah, eso we do labs, we have the conferences, but i i’m always really impressed just to go back to community practice again by the diversity of those events, you know? I kind of mentioned it, but we have a group that organizes twitter chats every week. It takes a lot of work to organize a twitter channel, you know, and they’re doing that as volunteers every week, and then we have community calls or people call in there’s one for, um forget what they’re called. They changed their name technology managers is basically anyone in organization who you know feels like they’re managing all the systems on bail, they haven’t open calm. People call in and just ask, you know, i need a new ticketing help desk what it was everybody used, you know, and they just kind of crowd source answers for each other every month on dh the droop a ll group i mentioned they have webinars because they take turns literally sharing their screen and showing each other how to fix code, how to install modules. I mean, it’s, just so sharing, you know, it’s such a great spirit that then when we think we’re going to put on a workshop, yeah, we here take everything because you’re probably going to go do this workshop tomorrow better than we did it today, you know, just take it run with it you’re coming up on your two year anniversary, you know june’s jones, your two year anniversary? Yeah. Any aah! No, no lessons learned or something. You you’re willing to share about being good moving from staff position membership director tio the ceo. I don’t know. I kind of can’t believe that it will be two years in j remember what it was? I know, you know, i feel like it’s time flies, right? But i think it’s i think it’s really great. I mean, i am so proud of how much this small number of staff have done in, you know, now, whatever eleven, eleven counting me. So tio have, you know, put on two conferences. You know, this one that we’re at now in last year with over two thousand people and everything else that way around, like it just feels so cool to be a part of that team where magic is happening. That’s an example of the smart use of technology, you use a lot of shared documents. Unconference sisto conferencing, right? Exactly. Docks? Yes, because we also have two staff who are remote, so they’re not in the office we can’t just rely on is there, some way we remote, so we we’ve kind of changed our processes that we just don’t you know, you don’t have a meeting unless you have a hangout video or skype video, something going that khun lupin, who else is not in the room on dh? You know, everything we do were taking notes in live documents so that they can be shared with people. Andi just made that kind of daily practice of howto work with staff has made events like this really easy because you don’t have things sk world away on just one computer, you know, everything’s living in the cloud staff are used to having to use collaborative apse on their phone to post an update to everybody, you know, things like that where it just makes live events so seamless because we know how to communicate with everybody. We know where the resource is live, all of that you’re not standing example of the use of technology on and nonprofit organizations. I mean, we feel like we have to be right. You are, should you and you are in fact walking the walk. Awesome that’s great to hear we have. We have high expectations. For ourselves.
