She’s also chief innovation officer at the 92nd Street Y, but not for long. She’s a fellow at Stanford University’s Digital Civil Society lab. She’s at Radio Free Asha and giving Tuesday Is that giving Tuesday dot or GE? I should current Hello and welcome back, Tony. Nice to be here. Thanks for having me. It’s my pleasure. Thank you. Um So tell me about your this new, exciting title that you’ve got CEO of of ah e-giving Tuesday. I didn’t know like that. Sounds to me like CEO of Of metoo are I don’t know, how does that work or CEO of Christmas? It is pretty funny. Well, so e-giving Tuesday’s the movement and on DH movements have lots and lots of leaders and all those leaders Coke create e-giving Tuesday e-giving Tuesday is also how the leadership and has a new organization. And as you know, we have seen incubated at the 92nd Street y forgiving Tuesday’s the 1st 7 and 1/2 years and so we’re going to be transitioning to become independent, which is really exciting It doesn’t make a huge amount of difference to your average e-giving tease, a participant or or a fan or super ambassador. But it makes a big difference to us because it’s really interesting. Actually, they consider that for everything giving Tuesday has has done and for how much it’s grown in the past eight years. E-giving Tuesday has never actually had a single full time employees, myself included, and that just became an unsustainable situation. So the 90 Seconds she wide Belfer center, which I direct the full time leadership and giving Tuesday, needs full time leadership. And and so I’m going to be transitioning out to work full time on giving Tuesday and really double down on arika. Wonderful, you’re our first guest on about giving Tuesday was Henry Henry. Tim’s the CEO of the many secretary. Why, after the first after the very 1st 1 Andi have sampled it from time to time after that, So So this is a paid position, all right, Where does the where does the money come to pay to pay you? Is that is that from the Why? No way. Stop, That’s that part’s not really changing. We fundrasing freezing Tuesday we had fund-raising for years has been very generously supported by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, so they will continue to support us and we will continue to raise additional funds as well to support all the different parts of the movement that that we want to support and cultivate, including our leadership team. Yeah, and what are the other leadership positions? I don’t I don’t think people know this And plus, it’s all brand new so but I don’t think I know that it’s not new. It’s actually it’s not brand new over there. Over the years, we have built up e-giving Tuesday team court what we call our core team because it’s really important to distinguish the are core team from the leaders that exist all over this country and all over the world who are leading like entire giving Tuesday country movement Right there. We don’t consider them part of our quarantine, but there’s certainly part of our broader community and our broader network. We all work extremely closely together, but our team of 10 is my self, A data lead. We have a strategy lead way, have a fund-raising and data support. We have a global community manager. We have a social media manager. So yes, there are definitely people that are devoting lots and lots of time, making sure that we amplify all the good work that giving Tuesday is doing all over the world. You know, sometimes we have, you know, certain strategic objective that come from us. But often what happens e-giving Tuesday is that we see something, something meaningful, something inspiring, something that we think a lot of tension organically emerging from the movement. And then we, as a team talk about how we can best support that. So there have been lots of different examples our community campaigns, for example, which are entire state or small cities or big town whatever that come together to create a e-giving Tuesday campaign that pulls together all of the different segments and sectors of that community and really reflects that communities, identity and population and a sense of civic pride so that we had no expectation that that who happened, We just had no idea when we first launched e-giving Tuesday and that first, you know, years that Henry and I were working on it. That’s not something we expected to see. It happened. And so our job as a team was to make it at six. Cecil, as we possibly could offer all of the additional support convening power, all of that to what was emerging organically. Another example is our country’s leaders. We had no idea getting Tuesday. We cross borders now, As you know, we we predicated it on Black Friday and Cyber Monday on Thanksgiving, for that matter. But I mean, that’s all pretty us focused. But almost immediately giving Tuesday started to cross Borders, and now we’ve We’ve passed 60 countries, so we spend a lot of time in this sort of Pierre learning ecosystem that those country leaders have come to comprise. Okay, I see so right, not new, but I still, I think, widely unknown. I think people think it’s all undistributed, and, um, I don’t think that’s commonly know that there’s this leadership team of 10. That’s really no, I think you’re absolutely right and partial Tony, that’s kind of fine design, like we’re not, You know, we’re not enough self promotion, you know, exactly minutes, and I think it’s really interesting. You know, a movement can be leaderless right and that there’s nothing wrong with that. It’s just a different model on DH. Movement can be leader full, and we like to think of it in that way that we’re not the only leaders of the movement. But we are way are certainly hear ourselves as its backbone. Yeah, it’s all. It’s all very new power to give old Marge Teo Henry’s book and he’s been on talking about. He was on talking about it when it came out. Yeah, it’s all very new power. So are the Are the 10 people going to be full time e-giving Tuesday employees or just US CEO? No. So what? We’re going to be full time team final e-giving on Tuesday, the full time attention it really needs and hopefully, you know, fingers crossed. Many will raise enough money. Teo even hyre. Beyond that, I don’t think we need to ever become a you know, a a massive team. I don’t think we ever need hundreds of people, but I do think that as we expand to all of these different countries as we get more deeply into data work, we certainly want to be as well staffed as we possibly can be to try to achieve everything that we’ve achieved. But we’re very nontraditional when it comes to fund-raising as well, because we feel like we could do good with whatever we raised, right? So if we raise $100 will do $1000 worth of good with it. If we raise $1,000,000 etcetera Will Will will always parlay that into into exponential growth, as we have so far. All right, Well, congratulations on this new transition. Yeah, that’s happening in just a couple weeks, right? Is it July 1st? Is that one? It is, indeed. It’s happening on a lifer, so it’s really it’s really coming up, and I’m very excited about it. Let’s go back to giving Tuesday 2019 part one. All right, so that’s, er good news. Fabulous news. Congratulations again. So let’s, uh this is going to be the first of two times that Will, we’ll have you as, ah have the pleasure of you as a guest and now honored to have you as a full time CEO. Uhm, that’s kind of like that’s kind. Like any sample ward, our social media contributors. She started when she was marketing manager or whatever. What marketing lead for? Not for non-profit Technology Network. And then when she became CEO, she I’m glad stayed on as our social media on DH Tech contributor. So you’ll sew in your new position as a full time CEO of e-giving Tuesday. Well, we’ll look forward to having you back, and I’m glad you’re here today. So this whole announcement, Graham. I’m looking forward to you. Thank you. All right, um, so let’s get people motivated. Who have heard of giving Tuesday? Still, there’s still some reluctance, but I see I hear that waning. It’s not like in year one or two where, you know there was there. Was there a lot of naysayers that I think, at least in the press that I read. I think that’s declined. They’re still occasional, but you know, that’s fine. I mean, they’re entitled to their opinions. But for those who need some motivation for being involved with e-giving Tuesday on December 3rd of this year, what can you provide? How it’s growing, how easy it is to participate, etcetera. Oh, boy, we’re to start. You’re gonna have to shut me up, Tony. Okay, we’ll start with Okay, Let’s start with a couple of common misconceptions. Maybe works. So one thing that I hear expressed a concern is that e-giving Tuesday’s encouraging people to move money around on different days rather than being additive. Uh, we’ve done extensive data analysis on this and you know conclusively that giving Tuesday is indeed providing a net list and giving. So, you know, I think the concern that you’re simply moving the donor from December 31st to December December 3rd is pretty misplaced. I think instead, it’s best to think of giving Tuesday as as an opportunity to be more experimental as an opportunity to be more collaborative, not to use the buzzword, but as an opportunity to beam or innovative. I think that these are all muscles that be non-profit community really, really needs to flex its an opportunity to become more more digitally literate on fluent and and again, I think that that’s the muscles that the non-profit world needs. TTO play. So we see a lot of money being raised. Obviously, on the first e-giving Tuesday, we were able to count $10,000,000 being raised online, and they were able to count because, as we all know, data and the sexual notoriously poor and were able to count simply on aggregate total of the different transactional platforms to give us numbers and we add them all together. So that was 10,000,000 in 2012 and it was north of 400,000,000 this past e-giving Tuesday. And that’s that’s $400,000,000 that is made up of gifts, on average size just over $100. So we’re not talking big philanthropy here. We’re talking the grassroots e-giving. Our data also indicates, but be, uh, about 1/4 of giving Tuesday. Donors are new and about 75% are consistent, so it’s an opportunity both to rally your supporters that you have already and also to engage new ones so that sense of experimentation is often around. How could we speak to people in a new way that really gets them engaged with our cause or our issue? It means playing with a lot of traditional assumptions. And what I see a lot of is sort of operating, making decisions based on quote unquote best practices. That might have been true 10 years ago, even five years ago. That simply aren’t true now. And so I think it’s a really good opportunity. Just start from the ground floor, right? If you if you didn’t thank you. If you thought you didn’t know anything about donorsearch gauge Mint or stewardship, what would be the things that you would try? WAY have over 80% of our participating non-profits report to us that they use the day to try something new. To me, that’s a big metric of success. Even if they don’t make their goals because trying something new, that sense of experimentation bye collaboration. I mean reaching out to other organizations to look at them as mission aligned collaborators rather than competitors, as we so often do. We see a lot of that around giving Tuesday, and it really requires taking a step out of your comfort zone. But the lessons learned from things like that and the new muscles being strengthened, our things that benefit and organization all year round. Once you once you learn new lessons, you can’t unlearn them. So we don’t think of giving Tuesdays. Just how much money can you raise on this one day? But really, how can you think differently about engaging people around your mission, right? Not just around your bottom line, but really reasoned that you are the reason that you exist. The thing that you were here, the tackle okay. And the sector has been talking a lot about for years about collaboration. I I’ve heard it Mawr in grants, funding applications, clap teamwork, collaboration with other non-profits. But you’re talking about it in the digital space. So it’s it’s it’s billing over From from what I thought was the genesis of it, which was foundations wanting to Seymour collaboration. Yeah, I mean, when I when I talk about the kind of collaboration I see on giving Tuesday as far more than digitally, you know, we see groups of arts and culture organizations, groups of immigrants, rights organizations, groups, of women’s health organizations are looking out for each other to try to really Coke create not just a fundraising campaign, but really a storytelling campaign and awareness raising campaign. So it becomes less about how much can we raise versus them? Where’s our logo gonna go? How much credit are we going to get? And much more about we all exist to tackle this same mission. How creative can we get in telling a story about why this cause is so important? So I draw a real distinction between transactional collaboration, which is much more along the lines of I’ll scratch your Back, you scratch mine and transformational collaboration, which really involved taking the strength of different organizations and, frankly, different people. Right, because all of this stuff is actually driven by human thought organizations and bringing them together to create something entirely new. So I’m very in favor of that latter part of that lot of definition of collaboration, which also carries, Let’s face it, more risk right in giving up some control over exactly what you’re going to do in the first roll over some of your data, things like that on DH. I’m very much of the mind, that kind of risk tolerance, something that we that we very much wanna build If I’m in an organization and I want to raise this with my vice president or my CEO, how do I start to get buy-in? I’m going to find something that e-giving tuesday dot or gets going to help me get some organizational buy-in or get some talking points that I consulted. Thing. Raise the conversation. I think you know, doing this accessible giving Tuesday campaign. First of all, it doesn’t have to be its resource intensive. So that’s one way to get buy-in, right. Any any good leader should be encouraging their employees and not just only their senior employees, but all of their employees to really think creatively and to try new things and have some tolerance for failure. So I think trying something new on giving Tuesday can can be a pretty light lift financially, and that’s one way Teo that’s one way to sell it. Pointing to the data is another way, right? This is This is something that’s raising people a lot of money that’s forcing people to think different organizationally. That’s become so much greater than just a fund-raising Day that you know the reasons to try it are ample, and the reasons not to are few. It’s not going to do If it doesn’t work, it doesn’t work. We’re not about every single person participating e-giving Tuesday. But I think if you do go on giving Tuesday website way, always say there’s no such thing as stealing and giving Tuesday. There’s only joyful replication, so we way absolutely encouraged people go online. Read the hundreds of case studies that you’ll find their fund-raising case studies non sun grazing case studies, collaborative case studies, community foundation case studies and go on and on and on corporate, You know, houses of worship and find something that works for someone else and try it so it should be an opportunity to innovate. It shouldn’t be crusher to innovate, right? People should feel a sense of, ah, a sense of adventure when they embark on getting to a campaign. And I think one of the reasons that giving Tuesday is so sticky for people I mean real people, regular people, not sector people is because it has a very celebratory overtone right e-giving Tuesday is not about morning. All of the weighty issues that we all have to deal with it out, celebrated in our ability to make an impact on them. And so if you see all the photos we have the privilege of seeing from all over the world, we’ll see over and over again. Is Thies peace with pictures of people together and looking really happy? So there’s something about this sort of communal right giving as a human community that is very sticky to people. And I think that organizations do the best when they leverage that fact. Can you share a story? I know I’m putting on the spot. One of the one of the collaborative stories. Maybe it’s ah, couple of medium size non-profits. Anything come to mind that you can share so we could take this out of the abstract? Sure, although I hate to do it just there are so many. But I will take a couple of examples and before you do that, I will also say along the lines of selling it internally. Okay. Another misconception about giving Tuesday is that big organizations like multi national you know, huge budget non-profits do better than small and medium sized non-profits, and that is emphatically not the case. In fact, small and medium sized non-profits tend to do better, then huge non-profits, and I’m I’m quite sure that the reason for that is first of all, those. Those small non-profits can often tell Justus compelling a story, but also they often have the ability to be more agile. They left weighted down by bureaucracy, so they’re often idea they’re often able to just sort of put an idea out there, give it a try without having to run it through multiple layers of approval. Rating is important. That’s important for people to know. So one example that comes to mind is there’s a small community foundations in a town called Bethel, Alaska, which has, if I’m not mistaken, 12 area non-profits. Now this town is is the administrative hub for a series of native Alaskan villages that surrounded It has won four way stop, and a few years ago, on employee at that community foundation, not even the most senior employees decided to do a collaborative effort that brought together all of vessels non-profit. And so they did a volunteer campaign where people stood outside of that four way stop all day in a sub xero temperatures, and they gathered donations from passing motorists talking about their area, non-profits and all of the good they do. And then they divided that money equally between those non-profits. So that was an entirely new model and also just amazing story of leadership. That young woman is entrepreneurial and she is creative, and she was able to, you know, put this game changing idea out there. And so the fact that that could be implemented in a town like vessel and also in let’s say, the entire state of Illinois or New York or Arkansas is exactly what we had in mind when we created giving Tuesday as an idea that could really be adapted to anyone or any town or anything or any cause. One collaborative story that I really loved. Tony. There was a group of women’s health organizations in Wisconsin that had always been competing against each other for donors. Ellers we see so often that’s pretty much the default in the sector. And instead of doing that, they decided Teo again do this collaborative campaign. It was not about their their individual P and l’s. That was not about their individual brands But that was about the mission that they were trying to serve collaboratively rights and sew up. That seems so obvious, but I think often mission can become subsumed to brand. So these these organizations were all trying to help women in various ways. They got a local tavern to devote space to them tohave an awareness raising party, basically and fundraiser. And then they had that they got a ton of people came and they again distributed the funds equally. We also see models where organizations will come together, do a collaborative storytelling campaign, and then fundez goto directly to the whatever organization people want to donate too. So it doesn’t have to be that sort of equal divvying up of the pot. It doesn’t have to be anything right. It could be whatever a group of organizations decides hyre to co create together on DH more entrepreneurial better. In my opinion, this is a thank you. These this excellent storytelling in news for our listeners because they’re in small and midsize non-profits and your your larger behemoth organizations are are going to be to your point. First of all, it’s going to be difficult. And then in the end. It’s probably gonna not be so successful anyway, even if they’re even if you can overcome hurdles in willingness to collaborate. But but the small organizations, they have that agility. You’re right. They’re not so deep. And they can. They can knock on the door of another local organization or one you know, many states away, but you know, digitally, they can come together. Um, that so very good news for our listeners. Yeah, you’re exactly right. And then a big priority for us here. Tony is going to be too, too very intentionally Try to create more of those kinds of coalitions, even at a global level. Like so, even seeing organizations that are devoted to social justice of various types coming together to form interconnected network. Because we’ve seen how incredibly useful and productive and inspiring that is among the networks that have already been created with e-giving Tuesday if you can imagine an idea being born in Taiwan and then being implemented in Tanzania within the same two weeks, fan, if we created more of those kinds of network, imagine how radically change and improve the sector. How do you encourage that that international part elaborations about your first question, you know, why does e-giving. Tuesday Nida Core leadership team? I think part of what we what we exist to do is to set a culture and a set of behavioral norms and expectations within the broader giving Tuesday community on a big part of those norms and expectations are that we are as generous within as we are without. So the philanthropic community is often far less still in profit, inside itself, right inside, inside the bubble and with with each other with our what should be our colleagues. Then we are out into the world. And so our network of global leaders, for example, are connected every day, every single day of the year, not just about giving Tuesday. They consider it an obligation to share good ideas and things that have worked with the others in that community, and they find joy and reward in seeing those ideas picked up by others. So there’s no sense of I’m going to do something that works, and then I’m going to afford that ideas so that it only works for me. There’s a sense of I want to see this popping up everywhere because it’s because it’s done so well, we just have a couple minutes left. What are you alluded to? Outdated best practices. Could you, uh, identify a couple of those? Take a couple of those off that you think we’re holding on to need mistakenly. Yeah, sure. And, you know, I’m sure people will be very annoyed with me, but, uh, so one would be the conflict of donor fatigue. I think what I’ve seen, you know, from my observation and from the analysis that we’ve done of the data that we have available to us, donor-centric has become more of an excuse then a fact within the sector. Right? So you don’t see the corporate world worrying that it’s selling too hard. You don’t see the corporate thing that they’re making. They’re asking people to buy and buy again and by again, Right. But you do see that same worry in the sector that we’re over asking that people give. But then they get tired of giving quite on the contrary, our our observation and our own analysis find much more than generous. People are generous. They give over and over again. And they gave in multiple ways. And so you know when you look at giving Tuesday 2017 right? What you saw was ah, fall. That was a series of basically terrible things happening. There was a Hurricane Maria. There was Hurricane Harvey, that was, you know, any number of a natural disasters and people were giving after each one of those. And then they gave again in record amounts on giving Tuesday. So we do see some disturbing trends of e-giving going down. But we do see also these really hopeful trends of generous people giving and giving in multiple ways. The second outdated idea I think that I would raise is this idea that people give either in one way or another. So the way that that worry is currently manifesting in the sector is Oh, my gosh, people are giving so much to their neighbours kapin surgery on an individual cat with a crowd funding site that they’re not going to give anymore to non-profits. That seems to be a kind of logical reasoning, but we don’t see it and we don’t find it in our own numbers. On the contrary, what we’ve found is that he who gives the surgery are more likely to get non-profits because they are generous people and generous people give and they give in multiple ways. So I think, you know, back to your reference to new power everything has changed about the way that people engaged about the way that people communicate and about the way that people care about causes. And we need to pay such close attention to those huge ground 12 and tidal shifts so that we know what’s actually happening and react accordingly rather than do things based on the way people communicated and connected and engage her causes back in the day. It might be starting your plans giving program, which I’m always evangelizing and advocating for summertime is good time for planning. You can get your CEO tto take your proposal on the beach with her or read it on the plane. It’s a little slower time. I mean, it’s not dead. That was, I think that’s sort of outdated, you know, summertime dead time, but you have a little slower time. You can give thought to what you want to do, what you want to pitch to get your plan giving program started. And, of course, I advocate always starting with simple charitable bequests. The marketing and promotion of GIF ts by will so use summer time so you can rule out in the fall. Or maybe it’s a January rollout. But use this time to, ah, to advantage for planned e-giving planning and is more about that in my video, which is at tony martignetti dot com. And that is Tony’s Take you. He’s been at the Oak Foundation in Geneva and the Ford Foundation. He’s on the board of the Tinker Foundation and the advisory board of the United Nations Trust Fund for Human Security. Gentlemen, welcome to non-profit radio. Welcome back to both of you. Got to be here. Yeah. Great feedback. Thank you. Thank you. Brad. Uh, Harold Jay Jacobs. I’m sorry, Jacob. What’s the What’s the C for in your middle name? What’s your middle name? The C is for Christopher, my eldest uncle. Okay, Jacob. Christopher. Harold. But he’s just at Jacob. See Harold. Ah. All right. Um, I feel like we should start with Brad, the president of Candid. This all this all emerged in February of this year. Uh, what’s going on? A candid bread. Well, first of all, yes, it emerged as a 1st February 1st, but it’s been a decade in the making. The original conversations about this actually started in shortly after the recession in two thousand 9 2000 Can, uh, we started a series of deliberate conversations between the CEOs of both organizations at that time was Bob latto Huff from Guide Star, and we began to see a week collaborate together, commissioned a study into 2012 in-kind consultants to make the case for to bring the two organizations together at that time. The advice. That’s not so fast, but here’s what you can do to collaborate. We did that. We learned a lot about each other, establish a lot of trust among our teams and brought back to consultants in 2017 to take another look. This time they said, full speed ahead. Go for it. So 2018 we we barton long process involving both boards, uh, to do the pre work toe. Actually bring the two organizations together and we inked the deal on January 31st and launch Candid January February 1st on What? Why the name Candid? Yeah, that’s a lot of people ask that question. Which is good, right? I mean, that’s what the name should D’oh! Okay, we didn’t want to call the organization buy-in Foundation Center because, well, that would not be that wouldn’t that wouldn’t have been fair to guide Star That would not have been fairly crowdster. So exactly one. What the foundation center did already wasn’t really captured adequately by the name. GuideStar, in a sense, might not have been fair to foundation center, but would really drove. It wasn’t external professional branding process, that consultant. They did a survey of the staff and surveys stakeholders and the South overwhelmingly decided We need a new name going to leave the past behind and be an organization for the future. And we began to look around at all the names out there in philanthropy, and they’re all the centre for this center. For that, they’re all effective. They’re all sort of similar, and they started to throw at us one word names and the one they threw out there, which he sort of corrects our heads and candid. I was the one that ended up sticking for a lot of reasons. One, because it’s a really word that one was made in. The last words I write to it actually evokes the history of both organizations and our approach to information, which is to be candid about the real information about the sector to really show the sector as it is. So the people in the sector can can do good and make the world a good as it could be. Um, see, So Jacob what? What is the the advantage for non-profits? Our audience is small and midsize shops. How will they benefit from the new from candid? Well, you know, for the first year, you know, from the perspective of a small to midsize non-profit, not a latto current change. Both of the parent organizations programs are continuing, and we’re trying to strengthen them. But over the long term, we think that together we’re going to be able to serve the field as a hole in I’m totally new ways, and I’ll mention a couple. One is to provide a multidemensional view of the work of trying to create social good. What’s happened in the past. We’ve had these fragmented databases grant information over here, information about non-profits over their information about social indicators in 1/3 place, and we believe with databases and resource is and networks of the two parent organizations, GuideStar in Foundation Center. That candid can offer that full of you. Um and that’s gonna be important for small non-profits that don’t have the resource is to constantly hyre consultants to God and do a ton of research or don’t necessarily have the network’s toe have connections, too. The biggest foundations or, you know, the partners that might allow them to do more together. Um, and we also think that the set of resource is that the two organizations provided, um, can be presented in a way that’s just easier for non-profits access organized in a way that that really brings to the top. What’s most important? That’s one thing. The next thing is that by bringing the two organizations networks together, we think we can begin to weave together many of the different fragmented activities around the field. And for a small to medium sized non-profit, the most concrete example is filling out a proposal for foundation funding. But right now, if you were applying to 10 foundations, you’re probably filling out 10 proposals that are all different from each other but are actually asking a lot of the same questions on. And there’s a ton of waste in that process. And not only is their waist i’ma non-profit side, it makes it harder for foundation’s tto. Learn and compare with their peers. And when you look at the networks that Guide Star brings with some of the major technology platforms Google, Facebook, Amazon or major national donor advised funds. Fidelity, Vanguard, Schwab. And then you look at the network that foundation center has with local partners all around the country and indeed, all around the world, hundreds of them where their actual training’s actual relationships. You have a combination of bricks and clicks of a cyber network and human network that we think it’s really powerful. And so we believe that together we’re going to be positioned to begin to establish some common systems of how information flows around the social sector, not making judgments about one organization versus another, but just creating some efficiency in how people learn and how they share their story as an organization. Will we be seeing new new new tools and databases and similar to the Teo well, the foundation directory or the 9 90 offerings that Guide Star has? Will What what’s What’s plan? So right now we’re going through a process of trying to really understand each other’s tools in a much deeper way. Um, we certainly both parent organizations knew the other organizations core tools. We didn’t know him from the inside. So we’re going through that process right now. All of that functionality needs to continue because the ability to find a foundation or I learned about a non-profits programmatic objectives is going to continue R sort of medium term opportunities begin to weave them together so that we can, in one interface, begin to see how these different types of information interact. Um, there are some brand new products that we’re looking at. I’ll give one example is give lists, which are lists of non-profits recommended by experts or that reflect the portfolio of giving of a given foundation. There a number of other ways to generate them. Um, and that’s a tool that we’re that we’re working on right now. But the truth is, right then we have a lot of separate tools. What’s most important is to create a user experience that’s easy for people, and that helps them do their jobs better. So that may mean overtime, just like in the this combination of two organizations that we built that we blend together some of those tools, but keep the core functionality just make it easier to use. Tony, I think it’s, you know, it’s important. Both organizations have you No one through the the Syrians of you, you tell them I work in foundations dunaj, murcott, GuideStar. And usually they know you were sort of one thing. Like I’d say, Oh, yeah, I get nine nineties there or, uh, foundations that are in your foundation director online. Individually, we do so much more than that. So it’s taking all that so Muchmore putting it together, focusing and making much more tighter building synergies between the existing products and services, then building some new ones on top of that. But most important is making it really easy and clear for the user howto access. Exactly what that non-profit Exactly what that foundation social entrepreneur individual donor needs to do what they want to do in the world. Yeah, Andi, I’m glad you mentioned individual donor. This is Guide Star has been a wonderful, important resource. I think 10,000,000 users last year, Jacob. So this is all coming together for individual donors, too. So it’s so it’s ah, holistic in that in that respect that it’s it’s all elements of the community as well as people who are supporting it. A cz well as institutions that are supporting it. Yeah, way talk. You know, we sort of all state non-profit sexually say philantech sector. I think we’re all struggling for exactly what you call the sector. I mean, sometimes I hear it candid. We’ve been, you know, talking about the social sector. Because in today’s world, you have non-profit. You have individual givers. You have social entrepreneurs. You have be corpse. You have corporate social mance ability. You have a mission or impact investing. You have a lot of different kinds of organizations and individuals. They’re using a lot of different mechanism to create good in the world. And that is something that we feel as a combined organization. We can capture and synthesize and put out a really powerful way. All right, we’re going to take We’re gonna take our last break standby text to give. They’re five part email. Many course dispels myths around mobile giving. Earlier, Asher was dispelling myths around fund-raising. These do not mobile. Giving these these gifts do not have to be small gift. They could be in the hundreds. They don’t need to go through the donors phone company. That’s one way of doing it, but you don’t have to do it that way. And phone companies typically put a cap on these gifts. That’s why the misconception that they have to be small double digit gifts to get the email. Many course from text to give you text. That’s sort of the declining proportion that you each bear to our audience. The pleasantries air with you. We have, Ah, we have but loads more time, actually. For for Candid with Jacob Christopher, Harold on Brad Smith, Bradley Case Smith Don’t be formal. Let’s see well, some of the materials from Promise that Candid will further increase transparency and collaboration. Nasha and I were just talking about collaboration around giving Tuesday. Brad, how is this? How is candid going toe foster collaboration among entities within within our community? Well, you know, if you start to think about it, the two most important things to know if you’re going to collaborate our first of all sort of the lay of the land who is doing what? Where let’s say you’re under certain charter schools, you’re interested in animal rescue. You’re sitting human rights, whatever you need to know, and for a specific geography where you wantto work, who’s already working there and where the resources are flowing. And then the second thing you want to know is, Well, what to those that are already working on this issue? Know about it. If you don’t know those two things, you’re you’re likely to put your money where you can see they’re not needed or it won’t be effective. And if you don’t really know what people have already learned, you’re basically gonna be recreating the wheel. So with the vast resource is that both organizations bring to the table of candid, we’re going to be able to actually for geography issues and causes. So you, who’s doing the work on the ground? The different flows of money that air coming metoo support that work where there’s probably more money than I should be going where there’s not enough money and when there’s no money at all, and also by by capturing the outcomes and output to these organizations through our profile program, the research and evaluations and case studies who are issue lab resource. We’re also going to be able to tell you what’s working and what’s not. So you could really hit the ground running and figure out who the best partners are for you work. You know, the lack of collaboration in our sector in our sector is what keeps it from being more than the sum of its parts of the world. Needed to be more than the sum of its parts. You can pull all this all this together breath. We can pull it together. We’re already putting together quite a bit of it, obviously. You know, for some, geography is more difficult than the other. And we have global ambitions. We already have a lot of global relationship, do a lot of global work. Obviously, no one’s ever going to be comprehensive for the entire world. We have a really good shot at being pretty close to a conference on a lot of this information in the US. Okay. Okay. Uh, and of course takes time to develop this with the expertise and the data. The data gathering are, um oh, and and I apologize. Uh, your Bradford Smith, not Bradley got that wrong for that that happens all the time, But most people just call me Brad. I know. Well, that’s what I’m doing. But you could’ve corrected me. I would have been offended. Redford Cat. Okay, um, now I see lots of offices. Um, are those the old those of the foundation Centre offices in New York? Williamsburg, Virginia, Washington, DC, San Francisco, etcetera. Those those foundation centre offices? No, they’re actually have both offices. We had overlap in way have overlap in Washington, D C. And in the Bay Area. And we’re consolidating those into single offices in both places. And the other locations are either foundation center locations or, in the case of Williamsburg, where guys start has the bulk of its tech and customer support step. Okay. Okay. Um, Jacob, I wouldn’t ask you last time you were on several years ago, it was talking about the the overhead myth letter that you and I, Ken Berger and Art Taylor had signed as a CEO’s of ah, Charity Navigator and the Better Business Bureau. Wise giving alliance. Do you feel like way overcome that now? Are we gotten past the the anxiety that was Experian that donors were experiencing about overhead and the overweighted focus that some donors were putting on overhead. Are we past that now? I wish I could say we were, um so I don’t think so. I do think, though, in the last few years we’ve made some real progress. At least the nature of the conversation I hear within the sector has completely transformed the assumptions that non-profit leaders are making the way that some of the data platforms talk about and share information. Even the way the journalists address these issues, I think has shifted. But I think we have a long way to go to really have that message get into the minds of donors we keep in mind just in the U. S. We’re talking about 100,000,000 people. Um and we have decades of having reinforced this this false idea that the administrative cost ratio was a proxy for the quality of Ah non-profit. So I’m hopeful, but I also recognize it’s gonna take a while and a few other things that are going to be necessary if we’re going to get to that future where donors are really paying attention to results in potential and not an inappropriate accounting ratio And the most important thing is for non-profits to proactively offer an alternative to say I don’t want to be held accountable by this accounting ratio. I want to be held accountable according to results against my mission. And I define that as X, y and Z, and I really does put the onus on non-profits to articulate whatever numbers they think makes sense for their strategy in their mission. Um, and this is something that I think that candid will be especially well positioned to facilitate. We’ve already had 71,000 non-profits achieved transparency seal on Guide Star, which is now part of the Candid Portfolio, with many, many thousands of those providing specific quantitative, programmatic metrics that we can focus on instead of looking at, um at the administrative cost ratio and then, increasingly, some of our platform partners. He’s, you know, big technology companies in Silicon Valley and elsewhere are really thinking about how they might be able to help distribute that information as well. So I see a path to a future where the overhead myth is truly dead. But I think we still have a ways to go. All right, Jacob. Any any bitterness that that Brad is the CEO on your the executive vice president. Any lingering bitterness there? I mean, of course. Of course not. You know, Brad and I have known each other for a decade on, and we we have a pretty good sense of our strengths and weaknesses. And, you know, I think we both think that the two of us can each play important leads in this new organization, but that you need to have a division of labor on DSO. Brad is the chief executive. He’s leading the organization, and my primary task is to really think through the long term vision and strategy for candidate. We’re calling it candid 2030. Um, we’re really trying to think about big technology trends, big social trends and how those match up with our current capabilities, what we need to build, what we could accomplish over the next decade. So a lot of my attention is on that. But on that long term, um, and that’s really only possible, because I can count on Brad as he, you know, make sure that candid as an institution is coming together and, you know, becoming the institution. It we think it could be. All right, Brad, we still have a couple minutes left together. What else you want us to know about? Candid. That I haven’t asked you. Well, first of all, just, you know, a few things we learned from this. I mean, I think there’s a lot of interest in organizations in the nonprofit sector emerging, combining, working together. There’s a sense sometimes that there’s too much duplication. What organization doesn’t know what the other one’s doing and a lot of people are sort of seeing this is is really kind of an inspirational story because first of all, the idea came from us. I was a thunder for years. Jake, You know, I worked at a Ford Foundation Jacob murcott Hewlett Foundation and we, we, you know, probably presided over our share of shotgun weddings right where we basically used grants to tell non-profits they needed to work together or submerged. And those seldom really are successful. I think one of the keys to success of this is inspiration really came from the two organizations. The second thing is the thinking of Jacob mentioned taking up have known each other in a lot of different roles. They could was my program officer right When I was foundation center, he came and he did his first White Glove inspection tour, a cz, the program officer from the Hewlett Foundation to see if we’re worthy of continued support. Now we’re working together in this relationship, but that really establishes a foundation. The third thing is, the we learned to work together is organizations are tech. Teams are marketing our sales different kinds of teams through specific confidence building projects. Before we decided latto actually combine the two and then the last is the role of incredibly strong, dedicated board that you asked the question about you know who the CEO is. All those things were negotiated early on by the board, Um, and they had to master an enormous amount of information about the both organizations in order to go through those negotiations and did a fantastic job. So there’s a whole back story to this. What I think has a lot to learn from in terms of how these things work in the future for the sector. I like the idea that you’re you’re walking the walk in terms of merger and collaboration, Jacob, we have we have about two minutes left. Anything you know, you’d like to like to add? You sure? You know, I think it’d be good to just talk about division of Labor for the field as a whole. Um, and you know that a meeting a few days ago with a number of partner organizations, and we’re we’re talking about the need to figure out where and when do we defer to each other? Um, and that there are lots of topics where candidates Not the expert, um, say board governance of non-profits. And we want to defer to our partners at board source on that, um, we may have something Teo bring, but we we recognize that they’re playing a role, and we want to support that. And similarly, we hope that the field will look at us and say when it comes to questions of organizing data, which often can be really boring. But it turns out a really important. We hope that the field will embrace, um, things like data standards that we propose and know that if we are suggesting that these air the 10 questions we need to ask about a particular topic that we put a lot of thought into figuring that out and that we hope others will adopt that language. And the flip side of that is that that puts the onus on candid to really be accountable to the field and to really listen to the field and to ensure that the voices of those who are impacted by our decisions are heard and those voices are folded into the decisions we’re making. So we really do hope that the field will help us succeed, Um, by adopting some of the standards and tools that we’re putting forward. Um, and we also hope that the field expresses what it needs so that we can listen to make sure that we make the best choices possible. Clever falik um, okay, so let’s kick off our power on giving tuesday with a little bit of history? Sure, that’s things started it with henry, tim’s and who’s been on the show, henry in twenty fourteen. I’m talking about giving to them, but give us a little background. Sure, i think i’ll start just by explaining a lot of people when they hear i work at the ninety second street y and giving tuesday what the connections there is. So if you don’t live in new york city or you aren’t familiar with ninety second street y, we are one hundred and forty three year old community in cultural organization on new york city’s, upper east side. We are everything you associate with the community center. We have a very renowned pre school programs for the elderly school of the arts dance classes with jim, i work in the belfer center for innovation, and our center is really tasked with taking ninety uae’s mission core concepts that have really been the foundation of the institute for the past hundred forty years of building community, of civic based dialogue of philanthropy and thinking about those in a twenty first century context. Okay, so i give him that background just because of people like why is this community centre the hump of giving jesus thats why don’t your that’s the connection e-giving tuesday, i think is supported by all those exactly fit so well into all those. So back in two thousand twelve, henry tim’s, who is now our executive director at the time he headed up one of the centers at ninety y he just had this this idea there’s black friday and cyber monday, two days that unite the retail community, as we all know, to great advantage for them. Great advantage for us. And what if there was a way to unite the philanthropic community as well? And he often jokes, you know, someone was going to claim that tuesday, why am i not the good guys? So, yeah, from the beginning, it’s been a very simple idea, but we spent very little time planning it. Our first year, we kind of last year was when two thousand twelve we’re going to our six year now you spent a couple months just gathering a coalition of people in the philanthropic world and by that, i don’t just mean non-profits a nutritional sense, there were houses of worship, schools, corporations, small businesses, families, associations, way they’re the first year i was there the first year starting oh, yeah. Okay on. And it was really just kind of put out a call that we want to make this day special. We want to bring everyone together. You want to incentivize giving one? To get people excited about giving and let’s, just as an experiment put it on the calendar all kind of got into the world together and worked very closely at the time with our friends at the united nation and foundation in there brilliant communications team helping kind of home dellaccio nastad watch your show, she also runs gelato get us out of d c, where you went to school, you went to georgetown, runs gelato shop for shops? I don’t know, but she still i don’t think she would, you know, she’s, now that we work heading up come some of their social condition and we were, which is sure fascinating and definitely worth reaching out to her because they’re doing really interesting work there. Yes, so we just kind of launched and he said, we’ll be cool. One hundred people participated, a hundred organizations did something that first year on ultimately we ended up with twenty, five hundred participate organizations that we knew of who could kind of officially registered through our site and then just on social media, that data start hearing about all these cool things happen around the country, so we knew we were we were onto something and i’ll just say the first year and this kind of continues to be our ethos, so talk about it, but more as we go along it’s always been a very open movement. We’ve never said this is the right way to participate in giving tuesday or the wrong way. We’ve never supported one platform over another and one cause over the other. We just want to see people uniting, um around the idea of giving back and not just money, but also time probono work advocacy, it’s all any form of giving is what i have to say. Now, what was the moment of we’ll be able to talk about fertilization? Like what was the very first thing about giving tuesday within an email from henry to some people who said, i’m thinking about this let’s have a meeting or when did you first come up that you can remember? Yeah, i was brought into it about a month into the process. From what i remember, it really started with henry and our other colleagues, asha curren just traveling around and having cheating on the show with us, i think, if not last year, two years. Ago talks e-giving tuesday. Yes, yes. He’s, our chief innovation officer at ninety y but we didn’t want to ever be the owners at this movement. And even though we always say we’re the home where the stewarts but we wanted this to be built by the community to start what do you remember? Is the starting the first time you heard? I think it was even the phrase giving tuesday. But like the first time you had this concept, i think the first time for me personally was henry pulling me into his office at the time. There’s. No, even now, there’s no one who works on giving tuesday full time. And i was doing different work at nine to and he just said there’s, this cool idea immediately clicked with me and intercepts if i would help with some partnership work for it, i think on henry’s and it maybe start with a conversation with kind of u n f and kind of that was the start. I think there was a dinner party where the idea was first tossed around and people reacted very positively to it. But i think henry would remember that better than i do there? Okay. So you were near the near the you were like a month in? Yeah, yes. Labeling the embryonic. We’re still in the embryonic stage. I think ways when there was enough momentum that henry realized he couldn’t do this on his own and manage a massive department at a large non-profit where he needed a someone else on his team e-giving sometime and and brain power to it. So let’s assure people now, september twenty ninth so i got all of october and most of the vast majority of november. It’s not too late right now, it would have been better if you had been planning. Like since the summer. That would have been better. But it’s not too late. No, no, definitely not. And i think there’s again, i will go back to c p times there’s no right or wrong way to bird to spain giving tuesday. So i would say the there’s many non-profits for whom giving tuesday is really the cornerstone of their fund-raising for the year and in january, when they lay out their fund-raising plan for the year more their volunteers and plan or their advocacy plan e-giving tuesdays a cornerstone. Of that, and they kind of plan all year around it. But there’s other organizations who are new to giving tuesday who exactly at this time, two months out or like, yeah, maybe we should try something this year and i think what’s really great about how e-giving tuesday he functions and how it is a great opportunity for non-profits to try something new, to do some experimentation, way about rule without rules. And if there is some idea that’s just been circulating on your team, maybe e-giving tuesday’s the perfect time to give it a chance. So not too late at all earlier, you planning the better, but especially if you’re kind of new to giving tuesday and aren’t sure what you’re going to do just the first year doing something smaller. Small start small, right? Exactly, yeah, don’t be overwhelmed, right? It’s not an overwhelming thing. There’s not rules and reports. And aside from what you want to do internally, there’s no, act like this is this is why so many people thinking has flourished because has not managed centrally there’s there’s a resource there’s, a page of sight of tools will get to the tools and resources. And then from there, it’s, you’re own your own desire. Start small. Do something modest, make it the cornerstone of your your fourth quarter, if you like exactly. Okay. I like tio. What else? You can also learn maura the chronicle website philanthropy dot com fund-raising fundamentals the better way schnoll ideas for the other ninety five percent and when i was about to say was that another thing i like about it is there’s so many vastly different calls to action? People think of giving to say nothing of money first, but by no means is it limited to raising money? Give me some other examples that you’ve seen yeah, i think one thing i love about giving tuesday is it really is a way to bring people together, and giving is just such a universal value, it’s something that really unites us. And i think one of the reasons giving tuesday last year really resonated with people. I think we’ll see that again this year is you no matter your politics, no matter you know, the many things that divide us, giving tuesday and the unity that can happen around giving it’s just really amazing to see how that can bring people together is such a common a common thing, so in particular kind of volunteer events on dh in person activations are some of our favorite things to see around giving tuesday. One thing that just popped into my head from last year is there’s, a group called city dads so that’s it it’s in many cities it’s ah meet up group it’s organized around meet ups on and it’s a just dad’s getting together to do volunteer work and kind of create camaraderie and sabat the fact their dads it’s just kind of organizing principle it’s more of a volunteer group, and they partnered with plum organics x, which is a baby food company. And on giving tuesday in cities around the country, they went, teo homeless shelters and other places where people drop off clothing and food kind of assemble little packets that could be given to those in need. And it was just it was giving tuesday, people are looking to do something, and they were able to just organize this event that brought all these dads together, and often i feel like it’s mom to get a lot of the credit or we’re getting out and volunteer work and two year old to shine a light on that kid’s and baby food exactly be moms, but school exactly, and and for plum organics just a great opportunity for them to highlight there social good work and how they give back to the community justice. Such a natural fit so that that pops to my head one of the really most exciting elements of giving tuesday that’s developed over the past few years, and we kind of recognized it was happening and have been trying to support it, but it started very organically are giving tuesday community movements, so these are kind of locally organized coalitions of non-profits businesses, governments, schools in cities, towns, counties and states around the country. Last year, they’re around eighty five of them. Everything from e-giving tuesday, illinois e-giving tuesday, new york e-giving tuesday, charlotte e-giving tuesday, dallas sometimes they re brand more significantly than that to tiny little towns. There’s one in bethel, alaska, which is just a thing just a couple thousand people, they have one one stop sign in town and all the non-profits throughout the day took turns standing at that non-profit and collecting money, but also raising awareness that was then split amongst the non-profits in town and then they had almost like a science fair, but for non-profits, where they call to set up booths and people could come and learn about the different services, either because they want to give back or because maybe that could benefit that from them and really isn’t giving tuesday as a rallying point, but i also want to mention the community campaign so just really what happens if someone steps up and each one of these cities not even necessarily? Non-profit but an individual sometimes soc with non-profits eyes like i see the power of giving tuesday, i see how it can bring people together, and i want to create something grassroots in my hometown and really own it and really personalized giving tuesday not just in my organization, but for the people around me i wanted for the community it’s so lovely, and we as a team, i’m have someone on our staff now, um, who works with us part time, really? To support those community leaders and excellent okay, so let’s get it. I want to get some of the support that’s there, and i’ll just add, though, but what’s really exciting to see in the community aspect is how they support each other and how, when there’s a new community leader that comes on board how people within the already on the giving tuesday team not at ninety weinger out in the world offer advice and say this is what we learned. Oh, you’re a comparable size city here’s how we there’s there’s a ninety white community around community work exactly exactly. You know, i should have asked you just let’s get some basic stats out of the way? How many organizations do we know participated last year? We’ve talked you talked already about some of the things they’ve done, but i want you working how many tens of thousands this’s not me evading the question, but we’ve stopped counting because really, when we reached movement capacity, it’s just impossible to do b of activations and over one hundred countries that we know of it’s so vast we ask people to sign up on our web site, they could be little official partner would or not, but because it’s open source there’s no reason for people tio need to do that, and it’s isn’t a good measure of where we are. So we say hundreds of thousands of organizations on bank lose again, not just non-profits some of the stats we do like to quote is last year online, the twenty five’s e-giving tuesday, one hundred seventy seven million dollars was donated that we know of on lauren homes on, so that does not include offline. It does not include anything that happened outside of those twenty four hours, eight and that’s only dollars and that’s only dollars and just kind of other exact action we talked to talked about and get and and, you know, if a boardmember does one hundred thousand dollar match that day, that’s not in that amount, so it really is just a small fraction of the total giving but it’s nice for us because we can use it to kind of benchmark year over year and see where xero growth is, at least from from that metric i’ve seen petition drives, you know, it’s critical petition for your cause. All right, so let’s get into what people confined if they maybe they’ve done something in the past, they like to do a little more whatever or if there’s the first year, and they’re not that acquainted with it. What are they going to find at e-giving tuesday? Dot org’s? Sure. So i would say the best place to start is the download our complete tool kit, which is a very long document. I would at least art by skimming that which has kind of the basic language e-giving tuesday timeline, timeline, press really sample social media and i think also it’s helpful, because when the best things you khun dio when you’re starting giving tuesday at your organization is to get e-giving tuesday, team going not just one person running giving tuesday, so the toolkit isn’t just for you to read and like, oh, now i can run, giving tuesday starita lead to read and then become a leader of your organization around giving tuesday, but there’s lots of plug and play tools like tweets and press releases if you wanted to work on being a mayor or a proclamation mayoral proclamation tool kit yeah, which i know seems very specific, but it’s something that people love to do and it’s such a great just morale booster when that proclamation comes in a few days before giving tuesday and you’ve been plugging along just to know i remember our first year was mayor bloomberg time gave did one and and we were it was one of those moments that first year where it made us feel really so i just want to share that feeling with people, but i would say one is going to get through the tool kit and just going understanding what it’s all about case studies are a great place to go so that we all have a case study which has for non-profits and kind of the other types of organizations that that could participate local non-profits larger non-profits and with the case studies, if something piques your interest because the others, they’re pretty short, you can just kind of google the organization and giving tuesday and and find out much more see, you know, but the page look like and, you know, really delve more into that, and the other thing you do on the site is signed up for for our newsletter that also get you listed as an official giving tuesday partner in-kind of one and the same and then you’ll get when we add resource is you’ll be aware of those webinars webinars webinars coming? I can’t listen about the top of my head, but bojan e-giving tuesday at orc slash events now you’ll see a list of what’s coming up i know we have one with fire spring next week yeah, there’s always new things being added and leslie, we have a blog’s so as we have examples of what’s coming up for this upcoming year, we update that and we love it when people submit to our blogged what they have in the works less like tio here where this great organization or run e-giving tuesday campaign and more where they were great, we’re a great organization run e-giving to state campaign here’s what our campaign is here’s what we learned last year and how we’re changing because we really want the community to be learning from each other ideas to make the pie bigger, not to get you a bigger slice of it. Excellent and that’s all giving tuesday dot org’s exactly all e-giving tuesday, there was even a year there’s a plan giving toolkit that’s what you do plant giving consulting so everything is close to me close to my heart yeah, you could make plan giving part of your of your giving tuesday plan giving workplace giving if you work with a of for-profit who or even your own non-profit if they do workplace giving, you can think about how to use giving tuesday to incentivize enrollment to poor, bigger gifts on that day. Really limitless. Okay, bonem so i pulled together some some stories from that from this’s from the toolkit, like local non-profits, you know, and again to emphasize your point, this is not only by no means is this only for big organizations. There’s a of the naacp rat free library in baltimore, maryland there, when they’re one of my favorites, somebody from you know, what, two people i got two interviews from people at at ntcdinosaur provoc technology conference, i think we’re talking about energizing volunteers, and they were to ana panel two out of a panel three were from the naacp rat free library, you love them e-giving tuesday wise, yeah, what i personally love around giving tuesdays is when people use it to be collaborative and creative, and i think their campaign is a great intersection of those two. They’ve run a similar campaign the past two years where there’s they find, like the closest football game closest in time football game this year, it was against cleveland, and they challenge a library in that city teo fund-raising contest and then the losing flues and everyone’s a winner except one’s, raising less money but the executive director of the losing library has teo like, if i can remember if they want or not last year, but as much of a football fans, i yeah, but the executive director of that of the other library would like to dress up like edgar allan poe and have to read the ravens and it’s all under the hashtag book bowl e-giving tuesday on they raised i think around forty thousand dollars from that and i mean for a library, when you think about library fund raisers, you know, make sales, i mean it’s it’s online it’s bringing young people in social it’s fun, it’s kind of goofy and just the celebratory nature of it is is so in the spirit of giving tuesday dahna xero i love it’s a small organizations, i mean that’s, what non-profit radio is small and midsize shop from ours from our survey results we which is not so i’m not scientific. About ninety percent of respondents have budgets of less than ten million, so that’s at least we know it’s kind of taking advantage of our website and our resource is but also data we’ve we’ve seen from organizations like blackbaud about who’s participating and mohr and more every year, donations are going to smaller and mid size non-profits okay, people think that, you know, i think it’s one of the misconception people have around giving days or coming tuesday is it’s like the big guys, your elbow, their ways, and but this is really an equalizer, and you know what? Just just to dispel that that myth, i’m going to read some of these organizations that are that are that i got from the e-giving tuesday took it home of the sparrow in extent, pennsylvania, right? That’s not that is not an international organization table in chapel hill, north carolina, in tulsa stem alliance, tulsa, oklahoma, better future facilitators, akron, ohio. Malvin, pennsylvania baker industries so you should not be you should not be put off by your size around giving tuesday. In fact, you should be energized by your size lawyers for children don’t meet me these organizations. You just not heard of operations supply drop in austin, texas okay, so we’re putting that putting that mr bed killing it? Actually, i’d rather not die just sleep because it could wake up let’s, just kill it and it won’t be resurrected because it’s not a holy body. So all right, what else? What else can we say about giving tuesday for a couple minutes? I’m sure i would say another thing we’re just really excited about going into this next year, and i mentioned that we had one hundred global activities and one hundred treyz last year, but specifically there are now thirty five, global movements. So these are countries where an organization like a ninety second street y equivalent has stepped up and said, we want to really own giving tuesday not just at our organization, not just in our town, but for our entire condor country. And these are places have no thanksgiving, no no tradition of black friday or cyber monday. It is so amazing to see we just had in the past couple weeks giving tuesday india e-giving tuesday, panama e-giving tuesday, liberia is new this year and kind of like i mentioned with our community leaders e-giving tuesday here in the u s we kind of bring everyone together, but then just to see how they all learn from each other, it’s been one the most fascinating aspects of the movement as we’ve grown and i think it’s a really powerful on giving tuesday, which has been since the beginning to say to people, no, every act of generosity counts. It means more when we get together something really cool when you give on giving tuesday and you go on your facebook page and you see all your friends are also giving and talking about it. And then to think this is having a global scale. There’s someone in tanzania painting a house, there’s someone in, you know, bangladesh donating blood and to know that’s all happening on this single day. I think that messaging really resonates with people. And again at that time of year, it’s goingto holidays just to be celebratory. And how cool is that? They were all coming together to do something positive. Awesome. You know, you were gonna leave it there because i think you’re not standing that’s outstanding. Get involved with giving tuesday. Yeah, yeah. So this is not just i mean, if yeah, if these were dying, um, solar system ideas are no ten. If these ten solar system characteristics of thriving org’s, then i would say, you know, it’s really not worth it, but he’s a universal. So you’ve got you’ve got to go get the ten universal characteristics, not merely solar system. We talked a lot about strategy. I think with jessica let’s, get into some tactical ideas you like you like having people set up in advance. To who, you know, we’re going to be your champions. Well, when we talked about this before and other contacts now for that same, like a e-giving day, like giving to this whillans, you know, so it will not be new tto learn that i’m a fan of letting your community lead instead of the organization be the one out in the lead. I really think that a day let giving tuesday where you’re trying to reach as many folks as possible, but we all know and a lot of what’s going to capture their attention is storytelling and people really being able to speak clearly about the value of your mission. And i think it’s much better when other community members are making that appeal versus just the organization, because everyone’s going to respond to that same? Well, of course, the organization thinks it’s important. You worked there. You know where? Hearing that from a community member. Can can actually be really powerful and potentially change people’s mindset click through and learn a little bit more so i always recommend for organizations, especially organizations where this will be their first time participating and giving tuesday to set up. It doesn’t have to be an overwhelming, like fifty person list, you know could be five people, but make sure you have kind of a social media champions list of people who already have social media accounts, they already know how to use them. They’re probably posting frequently so there, you know, the folks that are connected to them on various channels aren’t going to be surprised when all of a sudden they’re posting about this, but they don’t have to be, you know, quote unquote vips, they don’t have to be superstar, don’t teo? Yeah, what matters is that the people that they are connected to like them and respond to them and engage with them, right? That doesn’t matter what their job title is are or where they live, anything like that, they haven’t engaged group of friends and family and an extended network that’s really what’s going to make him a great champion i’m giving to you so recruit them ahead of time, make sure they know that yes, i’m often in to do this for you, but you’re not making them do a bunch of work, so you’re telling them will send you example, facebook posts their example tweets, we’ll send you photos you can use so they know that what they’re being asked for as their voice in their leadership. But you’re not making them to a bunch of work to come up with what to say and some of those example resource is people will find at giving tuesday dot or ge jessica, how about that idea of the community speaking for you? Yes, i hundred percent agree with everything that amy just said, and it reminded me, i think those of us who work in the nonprofit world, everyone listening right now, um, often thinks on giving tuesday, you know, you get a lot of emails it’s giving tuesday donate to our cause and it’s very important to think about how you’re going to stand out in that crowd, but at the same time, there are so many people who aren’t part of the philanthropic community who don’t give online who are. Going, tio not get any of those emails on giving tuesday and that’s, why it’s so important to think about how you’re going to reach them as well and thinking of your community, is your ambassadors, you know, i might get five or six e-giving tuesday emails, someone else might not get a single email, but they’re going to see something in their facebook freed from there. Best friend from high school saying, no, i support cancer research, it’s giving tuesday. It would mean a lot to me. If you gave to this organization, they do amazing work, so just just think about that and ah, and how you confess, utilize those ambassadors on giving tuesday, amy let’s, go back to you. What else? What else do you think? Well, i think beyond just engaging folk, something that we have heard a lot of organizations ask us about or rather kind of complain about is something very, very tactical that i think often organizations don’t think about until they’re in the moment, and that is a number of organizations have discovered that, you know, it’s giving today they’re participating, you know, dollars air coming in there, super excited, you know, they’re trying to keep that momentum going throughout the day, and they want to post on twitter on up state that says, oh, my gosh, you are goal for the day was to raise five thousand, and we just hit seventeen hundred, you know, help us get to the next amount and all of a sudden they’re hearing from their executive director or maybe their development director that that is not an improved post and that, for whatever reason there executive director or whomever else is giving this approval doesn’t want to share that kind of a milestone, and they’re like, well, but i’m in the middle of typing this tweet what else am i supposed to say? What’s going on? And it may sound surprising, but we have i’ve heard this dozens of times now from organization saying what what should i have done in that situation? Well, i guess my advice is to not get yourself in that situation. It is not yet giving. Tuesday is not the middle of you know the morning and you want to post that update so as you’re doing, you’re planning for this year’s giving tuesday think about what milestones you’re going to want to celebrate and get those approved ahead of time. Maybe it isn’t. Every single dollar that comes in your organization feels comfortable reporting that’s fine figure out what kinds of milestones you do have approval to celebrate so that you don’t have to be in the middle of typing that tweet and find out you can’t send it really think about how you khun frame different milestones throughout the day, as asked anybody that’s ever listen to public radio is going to know that they are ex first that that thinking about hey well, you know, our goal for this hour was two thousand and we’re eighteen fifty who, you know, do we have collars in the last ten minutes to get us up to two thousand? Figure out what those milestones are and how you can celebrate them and how you can use them as kind of another motivational asked throughout the day. All right, how come some organizations might not want to share dollar amounts that since you used that as an example, what? Well, the feedback i’ve gotten, i mean, at least in organizations where to come to me for advice about this is that today? Well, there are a number of different situations, but the majority of them is that they were worried that they wouldn’t hit the ultimate goal for the day and that they would be posting these messages about, you know, we’ve made it to this number, can you keep giving? And that people would perceive that as we’ve on lee made it to seventeen hundred, and we thought we’d make it to five thousand. Um so it was it was like they were intimate painting a perception issue, so they didn’t want to say the numbers i said, okay, okay, jessica, anything you want? Not maybe if not that specifically just about getting thinking ahead in your community i had about communications, that is, i think amy brings up a really great point that the milestone issue? Definitely i hadn’t heard that specifically, but it makes a lot of sense to me, but in general, i would just line up tons of potential tweets and facebook post you probably do less frequently on giving tuesday, but a few facebook posts funny gifts, which ifs like to pronounce it some images using that giving tuesday logo just have it all ready to go, because once the day starts, you know who knows what’s going to happen and having those just said you can cut and paste them if you were running around that someone else can cut and paste them in and you know they’re approved, we’ll just you don’t. Toby developing graphics that day more you could get ahead of time. Agree? Just make your life a lot easier if you and i have talked about that again. Other contacts having having images lined up in advance. So you’re not scrambling. I mean, you do that for you do that for ah, for ntcdinosaur non-profit technology conference. Yeah, exactly. And a lot of for a lot of organizations getting images lined up in advance also means making sure you have approval there. Probably, you know photos of people. So making sure that the photos that you want to be able to use on that day, or one where you actually have approval to use those photos, everything is good to go. So that, again, you don’t get stuck in the middle of drafting, opposed, because you don’t have approval. But i also think giving tuesdays a great time to think about images that aren’t just, you know, like a photo that you have taken of a room full of people, but an image that you create with some easy online tools, so that they could be more like graphics. Mostly, i’m making the recommendation because you’re probably going to be posting many times during the day compared to a normal day. And so, using different graphic struck, they can help. Just keep the post feeling fresh and new content out there. A little bit more appealing for folks to share when there’s a graphic sametz chart about all that you did in twenty seventeen that goes along with that tweet that’s asking people to get so it feels like you can get a little bit more information into the post and i’ll just add one more thing to that. Just a best practice we’ve seen is just using the giving tuesday has to hash tag often people. The first tweet of the day, the first facebook post they say it’s giving tuesday and don’t think to continue that throughout the day, and if they’re talking about campaign or doing this great storytelling work-life so i think as much as possible and in terms of approval when it comes to the giving tuesday logo and e-giving tuesday heart, we love to see creativity around that so well in advance. If you want, take the heart and give it to your graphics team or find some twosome probono work for you and change the colors. Whatever you want to do, you don’t have to run it by us and we love it when we see images pop up on giving tuesday that air. Using our logo in a creative way. Cool, cool, me, that’s. What you’ve always loved about giving tuesday is the decentralization. So exactly, and i think for a lot of organizations e-giving tuesday’s the first time, or the only time during the year that they really operate like this, that they would participate in a more global campaign, but also that they are asking for money in a way where they’re actually asking their community member for to make that asked, or that they’re doing it on social media versus, you know, really relying on a direct mail appeal, etcetera. What advice do you have around giving tuesday? Let’s? Keep it so simple. Well, some advice that i have e-giving tuesday actually come from other a crowd funding type situations and research from crowd funding black forms who, you know people are using for all different types of campaigns all throughout the year, but their research of what makes a successful campaign one of the indicators of a campaign that will be successful and meet it, um, you know, posted goal are ones that regularly post updates on the page so that the content is different even throughout the day or throughout the campaign. If you know another it is not giving tuesday, i think that’s a really smart because you’re sending people to the same link over and over and when they click through, they’re going to want to see that something different, right? So making sure that you’re sending them to that link over and over, that you’re, you know, just like you would if it was a little like news ticker kind of page, you can edit that paige and make sure that you’re putting an update at the top, not the bottom. Every time folks click through, they see oh, it’s, an updated eleven thirty a m and we’re halfway there, great that’s something really short and exciting that maybe i’m one of your champions. I could just copy and paste that as a tweet myself, right? So it’s just a way to keep it fresh on the page, but also to give other people fun, exciting things to share on and help spread your message. Yeah, cool, you could do that right on your on the e-giving page? Absolutely. Okay, okay, jessica, anything you wanna add with respect to keeping the content fresh all day? Yeah, i would say that you’re giving tuesday doesn’t have to be a single day event again based on our limited survey research, about only about a third of organizations just do something on giving tuesday either it’s the middle of a campaign, the start of an end of the year campaign, sometimes the end of a november long campaign. So just a long line of what amy was saying if you are sending people to a page on giving tuesday and then throughout the course of a month or even if it’s a week long campaign, just think about what you could do on giving tuesday throughout today to make it make it unique and incentivize or different stories you could be telling, especially if the page is going to be up for longer than a day. Yeah, okay, and you you, of course, you always want to know what we’re measuring, what what ar metrics going to be for this campaign that we’re engaged in? Well, in my experience, something like giving tuesday feels like a very fast, action packed type of campaign, even a jessica saying, even if more than one day it’s still a pretty intensive, fast moving thing on dh. In my experience, that means that other folks in the organization, whether that means other staff leadership or boardmember i want to know if it was successful, justus quickly, they don’t want to wait three months for your next, you know, development update to learn about the success of the day and being able to report on that means you’re going to have to know in advance. So start thinking about this now is you’re doing, you’re planning, what are you gonna want to be able to measure and report on to know if it was successful or not? Because it may be that you didn’t set up yourself to be able to report on those things that you hadn’t thought about it. I used to give me an example aa lot of folks like tracking on giving tuesday kind of the reach of their messages because as we know, it isn’t just about the dollars range that day, but new folks who signed onto your newsletter people who maybe saw your messages and shared them so folks who were engaged in other ways and that means that you might want to set up certain tools you might wantto have a customized bentley or or other girl short ner link for your donation page that you’re using in all of your tweet so you can really see within that girl short ner screen how many tweets retweet that’s getting? How many folks are looking at how many people are clicking through you might wantto dive into your google analytics and set up some campaign you girls so that you can separate facebook traffic from email traffic from twitter traffic, for example, on dh you know, maybe you don’t care about those things just using those examples, but if you haven’t set them up ahead of time, it’s going to make it really difficult if you wanted to be able to report against those goals and of course, those air going to flow from what are your goals for the day, which which you’re always a proponent of, and we’ve also again talked about it many times. Why are you? Why are you in giving tuesday? What? What at the threshold what do you want to do for the day? Which jessica and i were talking about earlier? It could be any number of things from ah, community. A community day of service. Teo, i mentioned petitions. Could be dollars? Could be new volunteers, you know. What do you what’s your goal or goals for? The day and then that’ll drive. What you going to measure? What have i learned? Something from you through the years. I like it. At least that if i learned at least that much through the years. Okay? Yes, i like it. Okay, i’m trainable. Just anything you’d like to add, you know, metric wass no, but when one nava metrics, i think amy made a great point. But when, when she brought up reporting to board members and senior leadership, it just reminded me how important it is in advance of eating tuesday to get buy-in from that. Like, i love that you need to report to board members because it means that board members know it’s giving tuesday, and they’re excited and engage with your campaign and whenever there’s a reason i know all boards or different, but to engage your board around fund-raising in a new and different way, as opposed to kind of the traditional ways is great. So, yeah, i just i love that idea of getting the board onboard early and keeping them in the loop throughout the day and seeing how you can leverage their connections. And, of course, if a boardmember is willing to do a match always huge that especially if they’re planning on making an end of your gift anyway, saying to them, why don’t you use your end of your game, teo, as a match to kick off our giving tuesday campaign? Okay, cool, uhm ehm anything you’d like to add about e-giving tuesday way, i guess i’m the last thing i would want to say is that i don’t want to feel intimidated by the idea of participating and e-giving teams we have a small community of supporters are because i’ve never really done online fund-raising before, like you were saying, it doesn’t have to be a big fund-raising goal for you, maybe it’s just a chance for you to go get more people in your community to know about the programs you offer, recruit a new boardmember figure out that you have a handful of champions, right? It might just be kind of an introductory year with a lot of other goals that are still really important. Ilsen jessica, i wantto clothes with you tell tell me what you love about the work that you’re doing. I love that every giving tuesday i hear stories that we didn’t know campaigns, we don’t know we’re going to be happening happening that are just so heartwarming and show that there is such creativity in the nonprofit sector and that people are really thinking outside the box and want to experiment and want to try new things and in a way, that’s just just relate to it the more i just that it’s just so heartwarming that that e-giving tuesday khun really be this opportunity. Teo, bring us together to show, like, with the best in people and in just a fun, celebratory way. And i just love being witness to that. I’m a big fan and i really appreciate everything you do for the sector. Thank you, it’s, our it’s. My pleasure. I love giving back teo non-profits on dh this is how we do it. Yeah, um, you have a lot to say about the premise that power is shifting say something. S so one of the things we’ve been thinking about a bit is, and i think this is true of giving tuesday, but also true more widely of some of the things i’m going to get to that, of course, doing in the uae is the way in which we were all thinking really carefully about how technology is changing, right? So we’re thinking about how we should get digital people on board and how we should make sure we understand twitter, but but i think something deeper is actually happening, which isn’t actually superficially about how technology is changing, but really how human being is changing. And we just put together a paper for hbr with my colleague jeremy. Heimans last month, which is really around this idea that the shift we should be anticipating isn’t about how technology changes, but how power to changes on that power is shifting from a model that you can think on his old power, which is very much about command and control, and downloading on your audiences to a model is really about new power, a new powers, really, about engagement, about participation on about theory around upload about how you really engage on it seems to me especially we think about the non-profit world that shift, which is from you, talking out audiences and telling them what they should care about, too. You actually engaging your communities to get behind the cause you care about is going to be a pivotal issue for us for the next decade on i want to include a link to that harvard business review article way posed toe takeaways on facebook, so i’ll i’ll make sure link is they’re not great, i won’t listen, we just we just launched this is that? Is that legal you presented to me, your incoherent? You’re in good shape, actually in a very in a very new power away. Harvard business review has actually start opening up their content a lot. Mohr to make it much more terrible on we’d love some reactions from the nonprofit sector because it’s a it’s a new idea, i think it could be valuable, and we’d love to know what people think. And that article was just last month. Yeah, it was the big idea in the december issue that you had to do something going out of your being non-profit influencer of the year, you had to end on a high note, but of course, now the now you have something more to do in twenty fifteen. Yeah, the from that article you know some of the new power values informal open source collaboration, radical transparency. Do it yourselves, you know, vs the traditional managerial ism institutional ism holding power, not not sharing content and knowledge. Yeah, i think the the one frame that we’ve used to kind of to simplify the idea is thinking about power less as a currency on maura’s a current so how is power? Not something that i own and xero some. But how is it? How is it a current? How does it build? How does it grow, and i think that idea for the nonprofit sector is so important, especially we think about fund-raising because i think we’re entering a period where we are trying to shift from a mentality where we think about donors, right? We have our old power donors, so when we get them to give us money, but the cause is who we’re going to really win won’t have donors, they’ll have owners will have people who actually are completely believing in their cause and getting behind it, and you only need to look at something like a recipe for ice bucket challenge, which really wasn’t about donors. It was about owners, it was about people who really believed they were the agents of change. I think that idea is a very big idea for the future. I had the ceo of a less on to recap buy-in in september, october something i just they’re going twelve tremendous learning from that. And actually, one thing i read from your twitter feed was a fund-raising expert who had written a complaint that she had sent eight checks toe organizations for year end and two months later, five them and yeah, she’s i think it’s at the-whiny-donor think that’s the i’m not even sure if the man or a woman i don’t know if the person won’t reveal themselves just at whiny donor-centric ember eight checks issue to most later three of them for them hadn’t sent think yes, that’s a donor not on owner comps pair that to something like a less where you have people who are literally the stars of the show that shift is going is going to be, i think, monumental for our sector and i love the metaphor of power because power is not has no value unless it’s flowing, yeah, that’s, right? And the new model is it’s flowing out in terms? I mean, i think of myself, you know, four years ago i had been a content i mean, there have been a host of a show now now i’m a content creator on dh that on that trend is only going to continue, and the way i think we need to think about it is not in terms ofthe the technological bias, right, which is most non-profit you see this problem, lunge a twitter right? So they suddenly think i better get on twitter. And this problem will go away is really not about that it’s actually, about you thinking about how you enlist people in a very human way to get behind the things you care about. The big new power challenge, i think, is getting the non-profit sector to shift in that direction. And how is giving tuesday an example of this new power shift? Well, i think in in two ways one in its design. So we we started giving tuesday at the ninety second street y, but it was never the ninety second street wise giving tuesday, right? The old power model would have been it’s, the ninety second street wise, giving tuesday. We spent all of our time making sure we got a lot of media and a lot of credit for it. And it would have probably affected people two blocks to the north and two blocks to the south and that’s as far as it would have gone. But we deliberately said it needed to be open source. That giving tuesday needs to be non branded by anybody. Which means that anyone from the red cross to the night, second street why? To the fourteenth street? Why? Teo, people in the uk but take the same theme and respond to it. And that was a very new power idea, which was it’s really not about command and control, but actually creating tools for people to engage exactly and that’s what you see when you goto e-giving tuesday dot or ge there’s a whole bunch of sharing tools, there’s videos explaining what what charity’s could have done, what you could do have to get involved. It’s, it’s, it’s empowering the sector and sharing enormously we’re on the story, i think which doesn’t get told often, which i think is important is that this was not all right. This was not our phrase. Someone described giving tuesday as a shared learning environment and actually because of giving tuesday hours and hours of free resources, always free have been created for the non-profits actor, i’m a friend of my marian salzman, who is one of the world’s leading expert in marketing and pr did a special webinar specifically about how how did you hyper local targeting for non-profits right? She is one of the most sought after experts in the country, but she’s providing that for the sector. Andi, i think as we move forward with giving tuesday how we can use it to help the sector learn together us most of all right, how we can all learn together is going to be the story which no one will write about, but i think it’s probably gonna be the most influential one let’s go out for a couple minutes when we come back. Don’t see her yet, nobody from california, sam, okay, i’ll shut her out when she when she joins us, okay. How did e-giving tuesday start? You had these obviously had this power shift ideas, how do we get this thing started? So we were thinking, you know, the night second street wise community centre, what we spend our days thinking about is how you bring people together and that’s what we’ve done for one hundred forty years, and we were thinking, especially around the holidays, you know, about black friday, you know, about cyber monday, consumer oriented america’s wallets are open, wouldn’t it make sense that the non-profit world is a part of that conversation? So the initial idea, which was black friday cyber monday e-giving tuesday and so it began with a team of the why, but then what began to happen, which i think we learned a lot from was it wasn’t just the leaders of the white who were working on this, but actually people from lots of different organizations. So some people from stanford university, from the economist from facebook, most of all, from the u n foundation, who actually formed a team of lots of different leaders and experts to kind of frame the idea to shape it, to start rolling it out on we kind of got on with the year one and we you know what? Just two and a half years ago, which seems unbelievable. The first e-giving tuesday was which your tio two thousand eleven? So we thought this was giving tuesday three we’re done three of them now, and we launched it with seventy days to go. And it really caught on the first year more than we thought it would. And that really gave us a chance to start thinking a bit more carefully about what this is, how it can be helpful to the sector most of all to learn. I really think it’s important with giving tuesday to think this is very early on in a project, right? This is we’ve done this for less than three years. The real question is going to be, i think, two or three years out, when we start to see the kind of scale we can get to in the kind of depth of impact we can reach. But that’s where it began, it began with an idea about collaboration, especially one of the things in the nonprofit sector. We all suffer from andi. I run a non profit, so i understand this is we all want to raise money for ourselves, right? We were always fighting against each other to some degree. We wanted to experiment with this idea that actually, there could be a tide that helps lift all ships. That was one of the driving ideas behind giving tuesday. I’ve had honest asia dellaccio on from the u n foundation she’s trouble a year and a half or two years ago, talking about giving tuesday she’s tremendous she’s one of the you know, she’s one of those people actually are who i think represents a new generation of leader that that kind of millennial voice who is so deeply committed to changing the world but also is so savvy on some of these new power tools, right? She’s someone who really gets how the world is changing, i’m not sure that’s true, more broadly in the nonprofit sector, i think that’s one of the big challenges that we think about a lot, which is how how is a sector? Can we make this turn as quickly as some other industries are? You can follow anesthesia because she owns shows. Owns a gelato company in washington, dc, and she is at dull ci d o l c i t sweet gelato is what it translates to, but dellaccio gelati is onstage dellaccio how did e-giving tuesday do in twenty fourteen third year? So i thought we saw some really positive progress. We had twenty thousand partners take twenty thousand? Yeah, you know where they got out of the states that there’s amglobal there’s some global numbers in there too. So people around the world on dh i think we made a really important we can talk about the numbers in a minute, which i know is where the conversation always ends up, but i thought something else happened, which was important, which was we made a statement about shared values with the driving idea behind giving tuesday when it began wasn’t immediately how can we run up the score in terms of dollars? It was much more about saying at a time when we are reaching the end of the year, we’re thinking about what we’re grateful for with entering the season of giving how can we actually start a bigger conversation about caring for other people? Because philanthropy, of course, is the ultimate expression of that it’s the ultimate expression of caring for more people. So i think the biggest win with giving tuesday in my mind last year, was what it demonstrated was the power off of really hundreds of thousands of people around the world to pause at a time off consumption and understand really unruly, underline how much they wanted to give back to others. She started to see a cultural shift, i think that’s right? I think that’s the hope, i think that’s the hope that actually you khun galvanize that and i think the great hope for giving tuesday a time when so much divides us so often the idea that something which can bring together people in all fifty states, all different backgrounds, all different levels of diversity or different political beliefs, if we can come together around the most human act, which is carrying from one another, i think that’s a really important idea, but i won’t dodge the question, which is about the money. Yeah, we’ll get to that. But it’s a beautiful, you know, unless somebody collapse wednesday. I don’t know what will happen with wednesday, but you know, it’s, beautiful book and thanksgiving and then and you didn’t mention small business saturday, of course, nor to another support your local small business and endeavor way have a conversation year one one of the smartest investors in entrepreneurs in new york who’s an adviser of ours, i said, leave it for a year, you haven’t got you haven’t got the plans together, don’t do it like seventy days, way launch quick, but they’re one of the main reasons for that was i was pretty convinced someone was going to grab tuesday. I actually thought what was never speaking to happen was on the back of black friday and cyber monday there would be another, whatever you know, lt was coming. Thank you, thank your customers tuesday or whatever it wants, so i actually thought it was important we try and grab it for the philanthropic sector. All right? Did you hear rumors or was just was the universe talking to you that way? I think it was an instinct. I think it was. It was an instinct instinct. I i admire instinct enormously. I don’t often kick myself if i if i don’t follow it. But then also the book end. So, you know, you think thanksgiving and giving tuesday book ending these consumption days in the middle? I you know, i i admire the idea well on the other it’s checking things out, the other thing we thought was important, and actually, this was an idea off matthew bishop, so the economist who who’s, a really obviously leading thinker in the flandez piece based he was always pushing us hard from the start on saying this should be the opening day of the giving season, right? So the giving season has a very big clothes the last three days of the year, but it doesn’t really have an opening on obviously, december is the most important month for a lot of non-profits toe raise funds and awareness and volunteering, so that was always a framing idea for giving tuesday, and we’ve seen some pretty interesting data on that point. Okay, numbers, terms of dollars charities. So thie the case foundation working with indiana university, did a good sample of a lot off the main online processes, and they’re counting around forty six million dollars from a group, often not all of them but a group of processes online there’s also, of course, a lot of offline money coming in to and there’s a lot of volunteering hours on other activations around giving choosy that we think is important, but the number which the press is always going to get his forty six million yeah, the dollars given, but yeah, the volunteering i mean that that dovetails with the shift that you’re the cultural shift that you were seeing that e-giving i also think, yeah, broader definition. I also think there’s something which people are doing well, which is using giving tuesday, is an on ramp for people to have longer relationships, so the people actually using giving tuesday is the start of something and then driving it through the whole of december or doing a match campaign for all of december, or pushing people towards, for example, recurring e-giving e-giving toothy is also mally just a notch, right? So it’s a moment, and if we could make it a very big nudge, i think it can be very powerful, but it is pushing a lot of people in the same direction to take philantech be just that bit more seriously, and then our job. Is non-profits is to grab their attention and turn into something sustainable? Yes, and and i think some of the critics don’t i don’t know, maybe they’re not crediting non-profits with recognizing that that it’s just a start or they don’t feel that it’s that that that’s going to happen, you know, there are some who say that it’s just taking giving from some other some of the day and transplanting it to this day. It’s yeah, i mean, i was master that yeah, i think it’s important, it’s important to think about that and the data we’ve seen so far don’t perfect. Did a good survey of there are quite a decent sample size of their organizations and actually found those organizations participating in giving tuesday. We’re doing twice as well online in all of december grayce was powerful and then the real one of people i listen too. We all listen to a lot on these ideas that steve mclaughlin a blackboard on dh he really has a strong view, which i think is right about the importance of us not fearing scarcity in the nonprofit sector, where we kind of have this oliver complex that we tremble. As we ask for mohr on dh and actually i think what the data shows is asking is, what leads you to getting money? The critique then e-giving choose which i think is is important to address is then, is it just in the moment? Right? So people think, is it one and done? I think that’s a reasonable concern, but again, i think what you’re seeing with giving tuesday is those organizations who are really winning big of those who have seen this in a very strategic and comprehensive way that bringing people on board and then they’re working out ways to keep them a comprehensive way. It’s not a day it’s it’s part of your overall strategy on dh bringing people, and then you have a responsibility to keep them engaged and invested. Wait, we are often say around the office that you know if e-giving is is a marriage e-giving tuesday’s the anniversary, right? So this should be going all year round, but this is a special day to engage on. I’ll give you one example of that which was very powerful, i thought from this year so the university of michigan they took giving tuesday they turned into giving blue day, right? So they talk they remix very new power idea, which which was remixing the concept to make you more relevant to them. It’s making more about them less about us, they turn it into giving flu did they set themselves a big goal, which is a million dollars to raise. And they caught everyone from their alums to the students, to the president or working via social media to dr money online. Their goal was a million. They made three point four million dollars on the day, which was mohr than they were ever making on the last day of the year. But much more importantly than the dollar figure, they made a statement about value. They actually got these the shift i was talking about earlier, which is shifting people from donors to owners. They didn’t just raise three point four million dollars. They brought a whole community to be their fund-raising team that’s the big idea, i think around giving tuesday very good. This is why i love this is a podcast because people can now go back and listen to that last sentence that you just said. Donors toe owners a bigger volunteer community helping sustained that sustain the movement you know all the fund-raising data says the same thing, which is the most powerful way you can get a gift is if a friend asks for it, right? What does facebook? Facebook is an entire ecosystem off friends and friends and friends. It is the biggest fund-raising force in the history of mankind, and no one has begun to tap that yet and again, lots of tools for using giving tuesday in your lorts much larger plan at e-giving tuesday dot org’s so it shouldn’t be intimidated by this idea now that’s, right? And the other thing we’ll do throughout the year, we always have a bit of a break, but actually one thing we’ll do throughout the year launching in sort of february march is very regular seminar’s webinars best practices will do sessions about campaigns that worked really well. We’ll do sessions about campaigns that didn’t work so well, but what we’re going to really try and do is make sure that we learn from giving tuesday because i think we as a community are often jumping to verdicts. This is tremendous, this is awful. The truth is always more nuanced, and we we as we enter this new power world with so many of the dynamics, are changing. And a time when so many of our behaviors are based on old power principles. Our willingness to engage with real change is so important, and, i hope giving choose. They can play a small role in that. Now, another challenge is you’ll see that people will take the dollar amount raised e-giving tuesday and divided by the number of charities and say the average was somewhere around three thousand dollars. Or if they’re being generous, sometimes they’ll up. The numbers could account for under reporting, and they’ll maybe, say, six thousand dollars for charity. Is that, you know, is it is it worth the effort? Well, i mean, i think if you talk to a lot of non-profits in this country, six thousand dollars is a huge amount of money for a lot of non-profits that really makes a big difference because many of the non-profits they’re small, they have small budgets and they’re doing incredibly important work, so i think i think we should always be careful, especially larger organizations, to discount the importance of small amounts of money, smaller amounts of money. I think i’d say something else, too, which is if you had said, i’ve found the way to get twenty thousand organizations or ten thousand organizations avectra six thousand dollars, people would probably think that’s quite a good thing in the world, so i think to we can build on that we can grow that number, but i still think that the i don’t think i have to be able to prove this, i expect, but i think the mohr maur, the bigger contribution of giving tuesday isn’t going to be just a dose of the dollar amount, which i think will grow, i think it will actually be about how it encourages people to try new things and actually what? I was interested this year in what i saw my end of year, i got asked obviously i gots listed for end of year from a lot of organizations i didn’t see very much creativity in that at all. I saw a lot of people saying it’s the last day of the year, but give me some money with giving tuesday i saw a lot more creativity. I saw a lot more engagement on a really interesting statistic from blackboard they saw seventeen percent one seven percent of the money coming in via mobile, right seventy seven buy-in mobile this is a very different idea for us. A sector on dh there was a really interesting article this week about how much trouble, how much over challenge non-profit sector is having in adopting mobile in a meaningful way and if you look at any of the trend data on what mobile is going to do, tow our organization’s it’s going to be exponential changed for years. So again, i hope what we could do with giving twosies actually shift the mindset, teo encourage a lot more learning a lot. More entrepreneurialism and then ultimately why we’re in this is a lot more impact. There was criticism of blackbaud also because they have some self interest, they they make money as people give through the mobile platform of theirs, which is a very popular i mean, that’s been there’s been a critique writ large off of all of the kind of different operators, and of some of the giving days all of these things, which is what is the role for commercial benefit in some of these sectors? I have to say, i think some of the more powerful arguments here are thinking about the level of quality that they can bring to the sector on what that value is two non-profits on someone like blackbaud who actually think, add so much value for non-profit that is really worth something, and i would say, is someone running a non-profit i would take that kind of investment very seriously. You just mentioned, you know, trying something different, and i i’m a huge fan and see i have the beauty of not being a journalist, so i don’t have to be oh, fan of giving tuesday and basically, i say, fuck the critics. Because, you know, we see so much. The sector sent to be very tend to be very critical of itself. I think ice bucket challenge was an example that harsh critics not giving the organization of chance, and then you also see so many people they want to encourage innovation on a lot of times i see it on twitter through mahatma gandhi or maya angelou quotes, you know, be the change you want in the world think global act locals think big, small you shook things up, you know? You started something that has enormous potential and so far hasn’t fallen on its face. Let’s give the damn thing a chance, you’re shaking things up, and so i hope the critics recognize that well, i pride probably would not share the language but share some of the sentiments. Which thing? I think the thing i think more about actually we’ve heard this from giving tuesday often is the twenty three year old person who’s just joined your non-profit who’s caught some big ideas and doesn’t feel empowered to try them time and again. Actually, what we heard about giving tuesday was, well, we gave this project to the intern on the intern, then delivered sameh zing. Results on actually, i think, that’s the our capacity to try new things, to be bold, to be ambitious. I think that capacities the most important idea, and i think the critics looked ideas like this should have critics they should have constructed. That ecosystem is good for the world, but i do think i would draw a line at the point in which we are fearful of innovation, right that’s, a very different idea, and i think our fear of innovation as a sector is going to hold us back more than almost anything outstanding. Thank you. Where you calling from? Yui san francisco today i’m actually in washington d c today your dc ah you with the fourth sector conference, right? Exactly right. Great chances. Okay. What is this? Fourth sector? This fourth dimension we have to deal with. Well, oftentimes the non-profit sectors thought of as the third sector. Independent sector and there’s. This new sort of class of organizations that are coming out. Some of them are for-profit. Some of them are non-profits, and they’re commonly referred to as social enterprises or for benefit organizations. And they’re kind of this diverse class of organizations that shared two main characteristics. And one is that they are primarily driven by social and door, environmental purpose. And two they earned a substantial portion of their income through earned revenues or business activities. Social or environmental is where you see most of them. Is that right? That’s? Right, danny? Okay. Ah, and what forms of organization are they are they take it so you’ll see many of them is existing non-profits and these have been around for a long time. So goodwill is an example of an organisation, social or charitable purpose, but derive a substantial portion of their income through earned revenues. Um, the national geographic society is another great example of ah, non-profit which actually has a bunch of for-profit subsidiary in affiliate organizations as well all structured together, you know, seen as part of this fourth sector comprised of both non-profits and for-profit that are really looking at earned revenue is the primary way to make money and not just relying ondo native incomes a little bit different from what you and henry we’re talking about, but involving some of the same people was interesting that henry mentioned matthew bishop from the economist who is the one who sort of popularized the term philantech row philantech rabbo capitalism, our philantech xero capitalism and basically looking at this fourth sector idea on dh, he mentioned the case foundation, which is tracking the giving tuesday funds that were raised, i’m sorry. Ah, and the challenge funds our raised and the case foundation are really strong proponents of impact investments and its port sector in backto jean k c e o of the case foundation was there at that gathering, the what we’re seeing is that these fourth sector organizations sabat can very well be taking our are taking money from what? What henry would call the traditional power and values charities. Yeah, i think there’s there’s a big trend going on and there’s quite a bit of competition that a lot of non-profits especially traditional non-profits may not be aware of, and i kind of wanted to talk a little bit more about about that competition because i think it’s really something that non-profits have to be aware of, um, they’re big movements right now of money of talent, of business that they’re going to for-profit that see themselves as social enterprises, many of them that are very true and sincere about their driving, their social purposes, but some of them out there who are sort of posing as these social enterprises but really, after a new market and in you niche. Teo generate as much profit as they can, so trying to distinguish between those who are really social enterprises in those who might just being bailing themselves and that the guys is really important, okay, let’s, well, we’ll come to making sure you’re dealing with a bona fide social benefit enterprise. Another concern are just around the competition. I just want to make this clear that that corporation money can go in this direction as well. Yeah, and, you know, while i mentioned examples of non-profit social enterprises before in goodwill and national geographic, there’s there plenty of for-profit competitors out there already and where competition for funds is is already existing. And, for example, there’s, a very popular charity right now called cuba, but keep it facilitates a lot of donors to be able to make loans to small micro businesses and developing nations, and and also they started in the united states as well for disadvantaged communities so people can go on the keepers site and make these micro loans to these businesses. But those are not donations those air loans that you’re making, you don’t get a charitable deduction for making that loan to another individual. Oh! Our group of individuals, you’re funding a business basically through alone. Crowdfunding often has seen the same way some crowdfunding is done by non-profits, but primarily it’s driven by for-profit, many of which are pursuing social names. But individuals, rather than may be making a donation to charity, are starting to find crowdfunding, a project that may or may not be charitable crowd funding projects and making loans to micro enterprises through cuba, which are not charitable donations. And this is you believe, ah, a recognizable portion of this is what would have been terrible money. Yeah, and i’m not saying that that’s a bad thing at all on dh, you’ll see proponents of the port sector and and i’m a big fan of what’s what’s happening, although again distinguishing between the real ones and the not real ones is important. It is just knowing that that that competition is out there and it’s going to drive non-profits or it should be driving non-profits to compete by showing impact, demonstrating impact, going after these big entrepreneurial goals that the social enterprises go after and seem to attract a lot of money doing so. And, you know, i’ve been talking about individual donations, which some people might think of more smaller potatoes, although obviously the ellis challenge showed you how much can be raised through those means think about organizations like google and their commitment tio, you know, donate one percent of their profits, too, doing a social good? Well, most of that donation that heavy bulk of that donation is not non-profits and one percent of google revenue that’s a lot of money or hate dunaj you know, most of them are thine google bone initiatives and corporate money may be going to their own community see csr or corporate social responsibility goals rather than going teo corporate sponsorships to charity foundation grant was going to be going to the social enterprises as well, because there’s this attraction out there that a for-profit social enterprise, i can create a sustainable source of income to continue doing it social good. And so once he set up the infrastructure for which you might foundation might give grant money, you don’t have to keep giving grants to these organizations because they’re letting the market forces then create the sustainable business, getting underserved communities like impoverished areas with goods and services that otherwise would not go there. All right, corporation money. We see foundation money, individual and with respect to the individual e-giving there’s, something called sector agnosticism that you’ve blogged about. I wanted to explain sure. So the general idea that individuals, donors thunders are all becoming are trending. I should say, i shouldn’t say this is the majority view point yet, but there’s certainly trending uh towards being sector agnostic in that if we want to solve a particular problem, whether it’s getting water to people who otherwise would not be ableto access clean water, or get people to reduce recidivism in person coming out of prison, nor drug abuse flooring that a lot of people are saying well, traditional charities kind of continues to put the bandage on you. No problem and that’s super important to help the people who are currently suffering, but maybe not doing enough to cure that problem. That social problem, which is a huge, huge challenge, and i don’t know that non-profits deserved to be criticized for that very much, but some for, you know, proponents of the fourth sector thing will for-profit can come in, and their health is really needed in order to actually make a big dent in these problems, and they’re looking at it from a slightly different way, and i think all players they’re needed here, i think, government, these fourth sector organizations, i think, traditional businesses that are just after port, you know, profits as well. It’s got to be thinking about this, because consumers now are you gonna buy, and we’re going to start to see this more and more back-up those companies that are doing something about the problems in the world, and not just making much money as they can and the sector agnosticism is people are not really caring what form of organization they’re giving to, or investing in a cz long as they’re seeing impact. Yes, i mean that’s one of the big challenges out there because everybody khun say that they have a social purpose and if you just allow any business itself declare itself is socially good. That could be, you know, a problem for the community going well, we’re going to buy their products because they say they’re good. And they’re commercial look really great. Well, that isn’t enough, and maybe some laws or policies can help in that direction. And maybe that is why we’ve seen the advent of the so called high braider alternative forms of corporations that take on some of the characteristics of non-profits and that they have some sort of social purpose involved but are still for-profit taxable organizations with shareholders who khun get dividends and distributions and make a lot of money to companies succeed. So it’s kind of that in between place more for-profit than non-profit i would say, but there’s a spectrum of how charitable they khun b and for that reason we’ve seen things like the benefit corporation. Some people call it the beat corporation, which is slightly different and all explain the difference in just a second, but social purpose corporation on the low profit, limited liability company or the altri see those air, the three big new types of legal corporate form that we’re seeing in different states. So if you want to partner with an organization, you should be looking for one that is designated in one of these ways. Well, that may be a sign, so it’s one of the signs and we’re in very, very new ground here, they’ve only been sort of developed and created over the last six or seven years, and the benefit corporations now are almost or in about half of the states right now after being first introduced about three or four years ago, i think in maryland first, so it’s going to be very, very interesting to see where where these organizations go, but there are other indicators as well of possible good partners for non-profits that are not just disguising themselves as a socially purposed organizations and that’s just to really that their activities and their purpose statements and their governing documents and see what they’re all about and take a look at their ownership structure and their board of directors does he woulda non-profit grantee to see if you can find out a little bit more about the for-profit and the big corp certification. Jean hold on the different from benefit corporation, but it’s called they’re often both called b corpse that be corpses or certified b corp is this good housekeeping type of seal of approval that is given by this independent nonprofit organization called b? And so if you meet their criteria, social good and it’s, a fairly rigorous test, and you have to be subject yourself to potential audits from the organization as well, so they can check that years you’re walking the walk and not just talking the talk. I imagine partnership is a possibility, yeah, absolutely, and they’re keeping that, you know, i think that are important for non-profits one is recognizing that there is some competition out there on dh there trends out there like sector gnosticism from donors and servants, purchasers and good purchasers that we talked about understanding the fraction of why social enterprises can be attractive tease individuals also really important in understanding the marketplace, and i think some non-profits haven’t done a sufficient job of understanding, not just the market of their beneficiaries that they provide services and goods to understanding the marketplace of donors and supporters and job seekers and potential board members, and knowing what they do have to do to compete for those things as well. Okay, so but let’s, let’s talk about let’s talk about potentially partnering with dahna a social benefit enterprise? Sure, and they’re different different sorts of partnerships that might be possible. So if, for example, you find a for-profit business out there that says, i, you know, let’s partner together so we can run a business using leveraging your goodwill in the community because you non-profit of god, you know, great donors and supporters, and that would really help our business. So why don’t we do something together? We’ll sell more goods and make more money for a business, but we’ll also give you a percentage of our sales, uh, in exchange for using your goodwill and and marketing together. And some of that some people will call that cause related marketing a commercial commercial. Co venturing is the term that would get me and drug in jail, i think, but those those air, the terms that indicate that sort of partnership where the for-profit leverages the non-profits goodwill on dh the non-profit benefits by getting a percentage of the sales, and you see that all over the place, right? Of course, yeah. All right, so if you can’t, you can’t beat the for-profit social enterprises, perhaps you can join them apartment and i think american express to you that this several years ago when they were on redoing the statue of liberty, and then they were raising money together that way, that that benefited both the for-profit in the non-profit so that’s that’s one way that non-profits and for-profit have done he’s partnership, if you will, for a long time. But there are all sorts of other types of relationships that are possible between non-profits and for-profit, and they can become very program specific. So if you have a nen stints of delivering water, teo communities that don’t have clean water, for example it’s very possible that either one type of entity one non-profit or one for-profit would not be the best at doing that alone, and forming partnerships with other organisations is and that’s a scary way to make that service delivery effective and efficient, and if we’re talking about that that that tends to happen more internationally, although sometimes with disaster relief, like with hurricane katrina, those could be issues domestically as well. On an everyday level, if we’re thinking about delivering food to people getting corporations, fruit corporations involved in that khun b completely beneficial toe both entities involved, particularly if you’ve got a for-profit social enterprise that really isn’t about maximizing profits, some social enterprises out there that are for-profit so they have owners are businesses that are willing to break even, and they may not even be willing to take any profit. They might take a reasonable salary like you would it a non-profits but their owners hey, you know, are model doesn’t sit in five twenty three because we’re engaged in commercial activities, but we’re actually not going to take any profit from it. We just want to make sure the services get delivered way just have about a minute left, jane ana, i want to talk about impact because you mentioned it earlier and it’s another way that non-profits can react to this trend that his new competition showing the riyadh and competition out there the for-profit social enterprises and some of the non-profit social enterprises out there well are very good about demonstrating impact and communicating it sometimes it’s marketing, but a lot of times they’ve developed systems because that’s, the way they think non-profits may not be used to that type of pressure. All the foundations are starting to put more and more pressure on them to demonstrate and communicate the impact and that, you know, i’m a big fan non-profits have been responsible for every big social change in our country and justin being able to communicate how they’re doing that and how they’re doing that is effectively and efficiently as possible is going to be super important, not just for funds, tony, but right now it may be more important to get talent because young people coming out there with big college debt, they can work for a nonprofit they can work for for-profit social enterprise non-profits gotta learn how to compete for that as well.
