Those are auction management software products, and he has chaired multiple fund-raising auctions for schools and groups in portland, oregon, and has an email newsletter on that subject i’m very pleased to welcome roger divine to the show. Roger, welcome. Thank you. Pleasure to have you thank you for joining me from from portland. Yeah, wonderful s so we’re all about awesome auctions. Why don’t we start with what the different types of auctions are? Okay, well, we before we do that let’s, give an overview of what an auction can be, and then we’ll talk about the different pieces of it. But i attended often a variation on most often it’s, a variation on the traditional gala fund-raising dinner, and it is a, oh, an event where you bring people to the to the venue and you serve them some appetizers or dinner and you include one arm or activities in the event designed to incent gas to make donations by spending money all right, guys. That’s, right? And the key thing that unites all of the the events that you can have within your gala fund-raising auction and that makes the whole thing work is a fundraiser is that these auctions tend to be, as with many gala fund-raising events of philanthropy, a spectator sport, you’ve got you’ve got an event that follows the eighty twenty rule pretty pretty. Seriously, you’re going to raise about eighty percent your money from twenty percent of your gas. But you need the other eighty percent of the guests there because they provide the applause and the public accolades that that spur that twenty percent of the guests onto hyre bidding. Okay, but so now this is the live auction. This is the live auction, right? Well, this is this is this is several of the components that happened within it. And let’s, go ahead and dive into what those components are. You know, you’ve mentioned a live auction, that’s that’s the easiest one for your guests who may not be familiar with the with the idea of the auction. Probably easiest one for them to visual. Yeah. That’s. Right. That’s where people most think of people. Mostly think of when they think of an auction, but there are other types, but there are that’s, the common one, and most often you want to include a combination of them the live auction has on auctioneer who stands up on stage. You’ve got some fairly high value items you try to and send some competitive bidding in the moment people raising up there big paddle, thie other most common type of of activity you’ll have at a gala fundraiser gala fund-raising auction is a silent auction falik auctions have typically items that air of slightly lower value than the items you auctioned off in a live auction, and you put them out on tables or you put out displays to represent them on tables and have been cheap in front of them that allow your guests too, write down their name and bid number during a specified period of time. Silent auctions will have a closing time when the bidding is closed on those items, clerks going pick up the sheets so that nobody can cheat on right there big number down after the closing time, and then the item is awarded to the high bidder on as recorded on the bedsheet ok falik options are buy-in are very popular and they have a couple of advantages over the live auction you khun do them with slightly lower value items. They don’t have to be quite as sexy quite as exciting a cz the items that you wantto put up on stage, you can also execute a silent auction with, uh a lower cost in that you don’t have to hire an auctioneer to sell them. Andi, let me take a moment to talk about that. I mean you generally some organizations feel like they don’t have to hire an auctioneer even if they do hold the live auction eyes. Is the auctioneer worth the expense? Or can just someone from the from the organization do it? It is it is, in my opinion, completely worth the expense to hyre not only a professional auctioneer, but one who has the benefit auction specialist designations. Sometimes you might find a car auctioneer or a cattle auctioneer who volunteers to do this it’s a completely different a chance. It’s a completely different mindset and you will find that benefit. Auction specialist pay for themselves four to five times over. Okay. So that’s a professional designation that somebody will have the b s benefit auction specialist. Okay, the professional designation, uh, generally auctioneers go to auction school to learn how to sell things on stage on some of them will specialize in benefits and they can go on and get their b a s a designation and it’s worth looking for. And roger, let me just ask, does that specialization come in sub categories so that there’s people who specialize in different types of objects, like maybe sports memorabilia or something like that? Or is it does it not get that refined? The specialization does not does not get further subdivided, but you certainly do have auctioneers specialized in certain types of items most commonly wine. There are there are auctioneers who are, uh, specialists and selling wine and have a great deal of knowledge that they can drawn during an auction in order to spur the bidding. Schnoll welcome back to the show on dh armed with my very welcome guest, roger divine of schoolauction dot net and we’re talking all about auctions today, roger before we get into the different types of non-profits i want to read something that came from the facebook page on the subject. She says that first he says online she finds to be easiest to run. I know we’ll talk about online auctions later on, but with respect to the live auctions, she says, holding an auction at a charity event can be fruitful, but often tremendous work for the organizer’s. The last one i did was not worth the effort. She found that sporting memorabilia sold the best, so maybe we can maybe you can come in on that. We can use that as a transition into the types of non-profits that it makes the most sense for and what non-profit needs to have in place. Indeed, absolutely is a really insightful comment on dh the core there that i want to call out, um, and used to to introduce who should be holding auctions or not is the comment that there are a lot of work gala fund-raising auctions if you’re going to have them if you’re going to hold them live, but at an event you know, it’s, a huge party that you’re planning and you’re bringing together a lot of effort’s involved to procure items, to merchandise those items and then to run the operation on the event night itself. You know, i’ve called this in various places a department store with a six hour life span that you’re bringing it all together and your your your selling items to people, and you’re checking them out and it’s all done within six hours, and it can be a lot of work now that said, it is generally work that you’re volunteers, volunteers associate with the organization are going to be capable of picking up fairly quickly. There’s not a tremendous amount of specialized expertise that is necessary to put this on. And so i would would put forward that the organizations for whom a gala fund-raising auction tens make the most sense our a those organizations that dafs, you know, our are not necessarily blessed with a high power development director if you are if you’ve got somebody that can run, eh? A strong direct mail campaign if you’ve got somebody that can do a strong fund-raising campaign that does not require event well, you’re probably better off putting your effort there. So that’s interesting. Okay, it’s, just a fact of life that there are people out there in the nonprofit world that are extraordinarily good at raising raising funds through campaigns that they can execute with a lot less work than attention put on a gala fundraiser. Okay, i just think i fundraisers don’t require specialized expertise and so there’s another tier of organizations where they make a lot of sense, which are the organizations that are, let us say ricin volunteers, but perhaps pour in professional development, you know, there’s a brand that we sell our software and our called schoolauction dot net and that’s for very good reasons. Groups like school pts booster club’s um and the like tend have lots of willing volunteers who can help who can take on a little piece of that, a lot of work, and you could spread the work among many hands, and they can mountain a event like this and have it be a very effective fundraiser for them, okay, volunteers, smaller organizations that are rich in volunteer organization schools, churches, community based non-profits community based service agencies often tend to find me to be a very successful, worthwhile effort. Okay, so how do you then start to organize your volunteers? What tasks need to be accomplished so that you can come to this come to fruition with your with your gala auction? Excellent question. I try, i try my best. Usually they’re not that good. So it’s all downhill from here. Well, let me let me try to live up to the question with the task to weigh breakdown the tasks involved in putting on a fundraising auction, i would go like this. Obviously you have to have a procurement effort. You have to get items that you’re going to offer for sale at your event, whether it be sports memorabilia, as your facebook commenter on or local business gift certificates or the like. You want to get as much of that stuff donated to your event possible. Roger, can i let me stop you for a minute? Do you agree with jane from the facebook page that sporting memorabilia sells? Well, supporting memorabilia often sells? Well, it depends a lot whether you call it the best or not, depends on who you’re grouped in, you know, who’s going to be in the audience at the event and in addition to your private part of your procurement efforts should involve, uh, sitting down is an organization and trying to analyse who you’re going to be able to get to attend your event as guests because in the end, unique if you want them to buy stuff, you have to have stuff they want to buy. So okay, very good glad you stated something that seems clear, but really not until you say it, which is you gotta know who your audience is god, if they’re not sporting fans than sporting memorabilia, is not going to go well, okay, so your procurement? Yes, there we go, there’s procurement, and then there is recruiting guest ilsen either probably the two largest efforts that you’re going to put on selling tickets to your event and getting the items that you’re going to sell once they’re there and these should go hand in hand as weii just stated there’s a connection between who your guests are and what you want to procure there, but they can be broken out and given as as areas of responsibility, two different teams. How do you like to see the procurement dahna is that? Is that literally knocking on local business? Local business doors, that’s a significant portion of the of the effort there direct male is an excellent tool to use teo sort of bulk out your procurement effort if you can get ahold of a decent list of area businesses. Um, i am building one by the way, i’m building what we’re calling the ultimate donation database and it’s going to be a free resource for everyone. I also published a free email newsletter called procurement tips for schoolauction why don’tyou neo-sage since you’re talking about yuri newsletter, i was going to it later, but since you mentioned it, why did you tell people how they could get your newsletter? Terrific. They can go and sign up for that for free from the front page of our weapons sight, which is www dot schoolauction okay, and what would we be offering the business in exchange? I mean, how, how, how, how would we tell the business that we’re going to be promoting you as the donor of one of our auction items? Another excellent question, because there is two in a row obvious easy answer, which is that they’re going to get a tax deduction for there donation. But that’s hardly the most sexy answer, and it’s hardly the most compelling one we can offer to them. One of the tips i like to give people is that if you are running a community organization, a school or a church, every donor that’s within a physically located within fiber ten miles of your organisation, you should send them a door sticker they can detail that can put in the window of their store. That says, i support this organization you want teo promote, you want to help them promote their position as philanthropist who are involved with their local communities. In addition, you can. If you have an auction website, aziz would have. If used our software, you can promote your donors from the web site. You can give the link back to their website, etcetera. We also offer a feature in our software where we can allow you to call out. Certain donors are at the bottom of every guest receipts on the end at the end of the night, so the point is, you want to be promoting that auction item donor. Like, for instance, the sticker in the window? Absolutely we’re doing this because you want to have a long, long standing, ongoing relationship with them. You want to be able to demonstrate that there was value to them and giving you a donation? Um, and at the same time, you’re also promoting your organization when you do so. Of course. So of course, the mutual benefit, right, it’s also interesting that you say that the charitable deduction is not the main motivation because that is what, exactly what i find talking to individual donors as as a fund-raising consultant, the charitable deduction is interesting to them, but rarely is it the primary motivation for the for the individual gift so interested? Just an interesting parallel with roger divine of schoolauction dot net, and we’re talking all about awesome auctions. Rodger what about using those volunteers marshaling those volunteers for the actual party planning the stuff that’s going to go on that night? Absolutely. And you really need a good crew of five, six volunteers that are excellent party planners to go in and set the event up. I find this to be one of the easier skills to marshal usually. Your organization within its volunteer pool within its reach, has got a couple of people that are really good at putting on a party on dh can work with caterers and work with decorators to get the room set up. Of course, i often ask for this because i’m miserable in this myself, and when i chair an auction, i will agree to do so only if i have somebody who is extraordinarily good at the the event set up and working with the caterers to be my co chair. Okay, so don’t go to any parties that roger invites you to when he’s hosting them. That’s not entirely true, i always hae always outsourced. Okay. Disasters all right, i know what i’m good at, and i know what i’m not all right? And that doesn’t apply to dinner parties. So you know, if you’re in the portland area, roger invites you to dinner to accept the invitation that doesn’t. That doesn’t apply them. Yes. Alright, please go ahead on. Okay. So in addition to the procurement and the ticket sales and the party planning skills, the other thing you need to have is that you really you’ve got a lot of moving pieces here, you’ve got to have somebody operationally who’s, extremely well organized and my personal biases that you should give them good tools to work with. People have been known to run successful auctions off of a stack of lined notebooks and maybe an excel spreadsheet, but i’ll tell you that it’s, a fairly inefficient way for them toe work there’s a tremendous amount of production of bedsheets and other collateral catalogs and the like that needs to happen. At a certain point. You need to be tracking all of your donations, tracking all of your ticket sales. Certainly my product or any of the other specialized software products that are out there for running benefit auctions. I tend to think that they’re they’re well worth the investment that you make. Okay, as well as that benefit auction specialist now would would. Would we expect the benefit auction specialist toe have these tools teo, to use for the the live auction? Or are they really just going to be the performer that night? The benefit auction specialists will bring much more than just being the performer. That okay, they may not provide you with the softer, although there are cases where they dio uh, they certainly can make recommendations based on what they have seen work for their other customers. But when you hire a benefit auction specialists, you should also beginning some consulting from them prior to the event on how to structure the live auction and talk about who your audience is with them. They bring a lot to the table there. Roger in in the few minutes we have left, i’d liketo transition to the online auction. Andi, open it with this comment from the facebook page from casey, i will say this starting out, it takes a little bit. I registered with ebay and they are currently limiting me to how many items i put up for sale. I called customer service, and they told me they do that for every new cellar. So far, we have been doing all right, and i’ve noticed an increase in traffic on our on our own web page. Excellent. Do you see that much spillover from on having an online auction to an increase in hits on the organization’s web page? Well, let me tell you where they come together. If you’re going to make an online auction work and you do need a platform, you can use ebay or you can use a private platform we provided as part of our software to andi, i’ve worked with a lot of organisations that have mounted fund-raising auctions online and the key skill there you may not need a party planner. You may not need an auctioneer. What you do need to have his excellent marketing skills. Because the key thing to know about online auctions is that if you build it, they will come does not apply. You have to hit your email list. I know you had a guest on last week who was was was telling your listeners howto build and clean. Ah, good email list. Just you have to hit that list hard and you have to hit it often in order to push people to register for the auction to push them toe look att specific items. You want to segment your potential universe of bitters and promote specific items to specific potential bidders. And then you really need to promote the sense of competition in the event you need to spur people on things. This particular item is out there, it’s getting these kinds of bids, um, you know, don’t let this bitter get it for this cheap yet, you know, give them some competition, get in there and did against them it’s for a great cause. So, you know, you know, clearly not just putting it up on dh, letting people come to it weigh it just doesn’t work that is just like a blogger, a web page exactly you have to promote in order for it to be successful. And if you do that, if you are promoting your fund-raising event in order to be successful, you will probably get some pass along in those emails, and you’ll probably drive as an ancillary benefit a lot of traffic to your organization’s website. Okay, another another comment from the facebook page, the host of tony martignetti radio is charming, articulate, adore bonem sir, no, this is from ana, she says bidding for good often works, but you need to know your audience very well. Can you comment on bidding for good bidding for good? Is is a company that runs an online auction platform that is out there. They have a a nice, uh, piece of software that i think. Works very well. It is one of our competitors, so i’m going to kind of limit myself and what i say about them, just a few niceties there, a print it’s certainly one that everybody needs to check out where you’re comparing and you’re doing your your shopping run for platform, you need to check them out. They are a leader in the marketplace. However, the the corner for comment that you have to know your audience is incredibly insightful and it’s one that we should repeat over and over again. If you’re going to get any fund-raising done through any of these events, you need to know who your audience in that room is, so that you can incent them in the correct ways. You can provide the right things for them to bid bid on. You can stimulate them with the right type of messaging and you can appeal to their whatever is most appealing to them, their sense of philanthropy, their sense of wanting a good deal, their sense of being a pillar of the community, etcetera. Take two at roughly thirty two minutes into the our philanthropy one hundred years ago in nineteen ten, the new york times earlier this year had a ah survey. Now i’m sorry. Years ago, they had a survey of philanthropy one hundred years ago in in nineteen ten and i blogged about that article that that i found from nineteen eleven it was, actually, i think it was the january first nineteen eleven issue, which had a survey of philanthropy in nineteen ten and in nineteen ten there was one hundred sixty three million dollars given to charity, and the article talks about some of the biggest names among that hundred sixty three million, like john rockefeller and andrew carnegie. It’s. Interesting that they they ah particularly admired anonymous donors in that in that article on dh altruism was cited as the main reason for giving which roger divine and i just talked about in terms of auctions, but not always unanimous, not always altruism. Mary harriman gave thirty one thousand dollars to the town of turner, new york, on the condition that turner new york changed the name of the town to harriman. And you’ll see in my block and that the town did consent to that they wanted her thirty one thousand dollars for a new train station, and they change their name to harem in new york. And that town still exists. That’s also the family that created harriman state park, which is an up on the hudson river in new york. And we’re going to talk about sassiness service as a software explaining this money saving trend and whether you should be a part of it. Scott, welcome back. Thanks, tony, but i’m afraid that i’m going to have to put you in jail because, you know, fast is actually software service, not services. Did i say, oh, here it is. I said it. I said it backwards. All right, that sze jargon jets like reverse jargon jail. I screwed that up. Okay, uh first, explain it. I know it will go ahead with your, but it occurs to me that but the basic premise of of software service really probably deserves a little bit more of an explanation. Okay, yes. Um, you know, most most everybody is or wass used to using software and software basically consists of it is something you download or a cd or a disk that you put into your computer and you install it on your little computer. Ah, and that’s called locally installed software. And sometime ago somebody got the bright idea. Teo put it someplace else other than on your computer. And actually, that somebody was ibm back in the time share days when they had these big computers, nobody could afford a little, you know, computers there weren’t any. So they installed the software on this big computer, and they ran a liars to terminal so people could use them. And so software service is installing a software on a big computer. We’re a bunch of computers somewhere connected by a wire. That wire today is the internet and way connects to that server, and we run that software, and so we’re not installing it. But we’re just using it so that’s, why it’s called as a service and so have we essentially come one hundred eighty degrees from know what? We’ve got three hundred sixty degrees from the mainframe to sixty years, right from mainframe, which you described teo locally based which we’ve been doing for a decade or two decades, i guess then back to back to centrally located software just it’s more accessible. You don’t have to be wired anymore physically. Why? And i just want to go back to the show archives and to remind people that it was my very first show, which was on july sixteenth of two thousand ten that scott was a guest. That was obviously the first time for everybody and that’s that’s the show where we talked about software is a service, so if you want to dive more into what it is, you can listen to that july sixteenth show, and i have in mind that that was my very first show and very glad that scotsman with us ever since. So scott, so you have a survey of you’ve been serving the usage of of software as a service among non-profits we did. Wait, did a survey we asked people what their impression currently was and if it’s changed over the years over the last year, and it turns out that there’s been a pretty good shift, i would say about a year ago, the there was a lot of no doubt, i guess, you know, f you the fear, uncertainty and doubt about it, letting our data really not the software self, because nobody really care. Well, nobody was that concerned whether the software worked or crashed or whatever, because something always crashes. But their concern was mohr, based around the security of the data. And, you know, tony ana non-profit world, you’re donordigital a and you’re constituents, the funds that you’re receiving and the plans we got for raising funds are pretty private stuff. Yeah, security is a critical concern, right? So that was really ah, big deal. Because nobody really had a good track record on security. Pretty much the only thing that was out there that was, uh, really heavy duty. Sas kind of software. That was maybe two or three years ago was salesforce dot com, which was really a pioneer in the business. They put out this application that allowed you to put your prospects, your customers, your contact information, and so people would use that in sales in the selling process, a lot like constituent data, actually, and at least a sensitive because what he had there was huge corporations putting there customer, and they’re prospect, date out there and you can imagine, you know, non-profit uh, constituent information is proprietary think about large corporations and, you know, they’re competitive edges and trying to get customers and make money just so salesforce dot com was really the first big one, and they were very successful. They they’ve had some, uh, some issues with their data, but nothing, nothing on the order of disaster, where there were data has been breached and the information has got out been stolen. So that’s really brought a lot of credibility, and since then, in the last two years and particularly last one year sas application have just been moving off the chart. I wonder if that, you know well, i guess you expect that trend to continue. We can talk about that. Just i just maybe i’m too cynical, but i just think some time there will be some major breach of privacy and that headline will cause a lot of a lot consternation. You agree? I believe that there will be there actually have been but they have been pretty well controlled. The systems that are out there, you think about it. If i have ah, software application in my office, i’m pretty concerned about the security. I don’t want anybody stealing my information, but the fact is that i don’t have any expertise to make that secure. I’m just kind of, you know, lock the door night during the computer off, but that limits how i can get to my data, you know, who can use it when it’s available, you know, certainly not twenty four seven, but you look at the sas based companies and they really have a stake in it if they get one breach, even if it’s just small, they’re going to get a lot of bad press. If they get to, they’re going to lose customers, and if they get three, they’re going to be out of business. So they really have much more incentive on much more at stake than than even the private organization of the singles non-profit okay, let me just digress for a second. Did you get any of the notices about the company? Absalon a breach of email addresses? Did you get any of those yourself? Because i got five there five companies that i’ve given my email, i just to marriott hilton and a couple of financial sites offgrid that i’m surprise, surprise those financial sites even mentioned because your balance is like two hundred dollars, but but it zoho approaching my area code to want to i’m trying to get my savings account to equal my area code that’s my goal for two thousand eleven, but now i have five company i’m just me five companies that use the absalon and the disclosure was pretty much all the same that that excellent company had breached through some third party my email address so that’s true, they didn’t get your your data so they don’t know your balance, although you just told us all what it was, but they didn’t know that they all they got was your email address. Yeah, now i know in that case, right, but there have been worse ones among credit card companies and all but just so you know your point. Very well taken that bad press could could kind of kill the could kill a company and and maybe substantially inger the sas industry, right? If you think about it, there is one sad company that kind of goes under the radar, people don’t really think of it. Assassin but that’s, google, gmail, google documents all those kind of things are really sas based applications and there’s no dearth of people using that mean there’s millions of people using it buy-in not that it isn’t taking hold, okay? In just a minute or so we have left before a break. Why don’t you acquaintance with one of the areas that you think is the reason why sas is growing in popularity. Based on your article on your web site, the single biggest one is cost the there’s you can get into, you can implement a sass based application, baste something usually for free for a trial period and then you rent it monthly rather than buying equipment, buying software, getting people training all those kind of things that a big deal. I’m very glad to have scott with us this week talking about software as a service. I said it right that time geever because you’re the first, you’re actually the first guest to put me in jargon jail? I think so. Well, but i blew it. I so i called it services software, you’re on it. You’re keeping my feet to the fire. So before the break, we’re talking about cost so you can get in really just aren’t they? Aren’t they often based on the pages by the number of records that you’re putting in the service? Depends. They all have some kind of a rental agreement. Heimans that rental is by the number of records, sometimes it’s by the different functions that you use, so if they’re different modules to be enabled, you know, could be an extra five dollars per month for this or that, but, um, yeah, there’s there are many different yeah, and for a small organization, this could be ideal. I mean, you’re talking about a five dollar entry cost at the very outset, right? And some of them i’ve said, uh, there are some that allow you to get in for free more of a of a trial. And you, khun set up the site, see if you like it, see how it works and go from there. And if it doesn’t work, simply delete your information and off you go with another another trial somewhere else. And isn’t that also a issue that you’re sort of bringing to mind for me the the ability of you to get your data back if you stop working with a company? Yeah, that was always a problem for at least an issue. Uh, pretty much everyone now gives you access to your own data. There were some some pretty loud screams about not getting your data back. And frankly, most of that was occurring in the in the install software world where you and i ghisolf softer on your own computer, and there really was no way to get it out. So you had to operate to the same, you know, the next version of the same stuff otherwise re entering into a different version, which which, you know, if you have even just hundreds of records, let alone thousands or tens of thousands that’s that’s out of the question. So those days of holding your data hostage are pretty are over you’re saying it’s worth a question just to be sure i haven’t run across any sass based organization that holds your data hostage. Okay? And of course, your your article on this subject is that n p tech news dot com because scott is the editor of non-profit technology news, what else is ah reason that non-profits are expanding their you? Scott, the ability to update the applications is just great. One of the things about that installed software is that you get this announcement from your software vendor saying we’ve got we’ve got an update, you can download it here or here’s the desk even and you need to install it. Well, you always have some hodja death right? About installing new software on your computer because what if it doesn’t work? You know, then you’ve got a service call you out of business. You can’t do anything. And so what software the service does is that almost everyone every sas based application i’ve seen, the updates are done in the background, and almost without you knowing it, so the company will come out and with letter rather than saying there’s a new update? You need to install it, and they’ll say we’ve been starting new update, you’ll notice these things have changed and and so they’re just there it’s kind of a seamless transition. You don’t have to worry about your data getting lost company handles it and the update that they did for you, they also did for the other ten thousand customers. They have so it’s a one shot deal? Yeah, on dh. So you’re getting the same version of the software that much bigger, more sophisticated shops they’re using, exactly and that’s a great point, you know, the year taking advantage of the pressure that the large organizations are putting on your software provider because let’s face it if they have hundreds of thousands of millions of records, they’re paying much more than you are with a few thousand records, and they have a lot more clout with the sas cos and believe me, they leverage that so thie the installations, the updates they put in place the features they had, all those things are benefit you just as much as they do the big companies getting those updates, though automatically, that could that itself could. Cause a little agenda, by the way, i love the guy, you know, koegler is telling martignetti about agita that’s because you walk into the office one day and it’s different than the way it was the day before. What you’ll find is that most of these people, these companies are very sensitive to that, so they’re not going to make wholesale changes. They’re not going to make something it says hey, what’s this they don’t make maybe a couple of menu changes, then they add a few features so that if you’re kind of searching around the menus and the functions, you may stumble upon them. But then they, you know, they have run up against that surprise before they’ve done with the phone calls, and they just they don’t do that. Okay? Okay. Excellent. Tell us another reason what else you got? The boy? Uh, one of the big things is time to market or time for implementation when you install software. There’s always the where they’re wass always the issue of well, do i have the right kind of computer? Is my server big enough to running the right version of the operating system? I running max. Or windows or winex, and sometimes you’re limited in your selection of software based on the computers were running. Now, if you have a computer or even a smartphone or a tablet or anything that has a internet browser, you’re there, you can run the software. All these things run on pretty much any browser that can connect to the to the web, and that means that people in different locations can all be collaborating, i guess at the same time, right? Absolutely that thie other thing and that’s again and great point is that if it’s installed in your office that you need to supply the outbound connection to the internet, you need to manage the user access. You need to be sure your connections on all the time and when it isn’t with such as, you know, saturday night at ten o’clock or sunday afternoon at three, you’re responsible for that and the sas cos, well, they you know, they staff around that they’ve got people that were there, they’ve got triggers that announced when something is wrong, they know it before you do, and so they take care of it again. They have a lot more at stake and then just one installation. So? So, you know, full time access and remote access are key factors. Scott, in just a minute, we have left. What are some of the functions that non-profits confined in software as a service? Well, specifically for non-profits certainly constituent management. Funda counting, mailing list management. One of the big things i just started. The tale of your last conversation about about auctions, auctions, services air great, then that’s a typical sas based application. So all those things that that a non-profit is doing all things they would like to do are probably available. Some kind of sad faces. See strategies in two thousand five, perry has worked on every major piece of federal legislation that affects america’s charities. Before beginning his work as a federal lobbyists, he served as special assistant for government relations at legal services corporation, a congressional e chartered non-profit organization. So he has that great in non-profit and outside non-profit as a consultant dual experience. I’m very glad that perry’s work and his practice and is business five. Oh one. See, strategies. Bring him to the show. Perry, welcome. Hi, tony. Thanks for you. I’m very well, thanks for thanks for being with us. Thank you. Um, perry, let’s. Start with the charitable deduction, which is something that’s been sacred for a long time and doesn’t seem to be so any longer. What is congress talking about? With respect to the charitable deduction? Sure. Well, a cz. You indicated i think a lot of people consider the charitable deduction toe always be a sacred cow in washington, and that is unfortunately changing it’s uh, it’s under attack, so to speak, the president’s budget president obama’s budget that he delivers to congress once again included a proposal that would permanently limit the value of itemize deductions, which includes the charitable deduction for certain taxpayers. It calls for a twenty eight percent cap on itemized deductions for individuals earning over two hundred thousand a year. That was twenty elearning twenty eight percent. Is that right? Twenty eight percent? Okay? And, of course, the this notion of a limit is somewhat new. Under the current law, most taxpayers wouldn’t hit a limit unless they gave a significant amount to charity. So it’s certainly cause for concern the change just to kind of give you an idea of how much money would raise it’s estimated that making that change that adding that cab would raise three hundred twenty billion dollars a year. So it’s it’s a big ticket item, and it’s it’s something that a lot of people in washington a lot of policymakers air looking at in the context of course of deficit reduction and, increasingly, tax reform and an overhaul of the tax code. There’s also, the president also has a commission looking into deficit issues, fiscal responsibility issues, and they issued a report last year which would actually call for a new elimination of the charitable deduction on they would replace it with a essentially a twelve percent tax credit, which taxpayers would only get forgiving above two percent of the adjusted gross income. So that would even be a more severe on change from from the and these are both obama budget proposals. So are they in congress yet or where would they, where would they reside when they end up in congress? Right? Well, the budget proposal is document essentially, that the president delivers to congress each year it’s kind of a blueprint for how, you know, things should move forward. Uh, the second, a proposal that i spoke about from the president’s commission. Actually, i’m going to be introduced as separate legislation in congress. But the larger issue is that the two tax writing committees, the senate finance committee, over on the senate side in the house ways and means committee over on the health side our act osili engaged in the beginning stages of tax reform, so they’re looking tio basically institute a overhaul of the tax code similar to what took place in nineteen, eighty six. So as they’re doing that, these proposals are kind of on the table and it’s something that ah, latto charities are keeping a close eye on you, and you used the word overhaul. So it is significant tax reform legislation that’s at least under consideration, and so it seems like aa lot of things are on the table that haven’t been before or haven’t been for a long time, absolutely in the broadest terms senate democrats, house republicans and even the president of some some extent are basically calling for streamlining of the tax code. They want a lower tax rates, they want to reduce or eliminate many tax breaks so everything’s on the table and the charitable deduction is a big ticket item and given what are no countries facing in terms of the economy right now, it’s going to continue to get a lot of scrutiny from members of congress. Perry, we have just about a minute before our first break, what are we moved? To the to the a question about the scope of tax exemption and then we’ll cover it. Mohr after this break. Sure. Well, a tax exemption is another issue. Another kind of big ticket item that members of congress are looking at in just the past few weeks. Actually, senator grassley, who was formerly the chairman and ranking member of the senate finance committee. Now he remains a influential member of the finance committee. And as many of your list there’s probably no he’s kind of the self anointed charity watchdog in congress. He is actually called for a new examination of how much the taxing kemp shin that’s a pretty basic term, you know, non-profits receiving tax exemption, how much that cost the federal government. And it may seem like somewhat of a benign act, maybe he’s just trying to get some numbers. But again, for people who, you know, work on these issues and watch this stuff every day, it has true significance. And a lot of people are starting to think about what senator grassley’s act his request might mean, yeah, all right. We’re going to look at this more after the break. That’s huge the question. Of tax exempt status. How much does that cost? And if if they’re looking at it as a cost, what that may mean for its its continuation or its reform. Welcome back to the show on with federal lobbyist perry wasserman and before the break we were talking about the scope of the tax exemption, just the existence of tax exempt status and senator grassley’s enquiries about how how much that might cost. This is s o i understand very your point when, when he starts looking at things than people get concerned. But this is ah different way of looking at that tax exemption. Isn’t it as a cost? Exactly what what? Essentially maybe behind grassley’s request is a natelec to paige the tax exemption itself, a cz what we call in washington attacks, expenditure and attacks expenditure is a term that, you know, perhaps you, tony and many of your listeners are not familiar with but basically tax expenditures airways that the federal government spend through the tax code it’s the way that they kind of achieved policy priority to the tax code. The most popular example of, you know, the most well known example of ah, tax expenditures, the the home mortgage interest deduction one that hits more close to home, of course, might be the charitable deduction. That’s also attacks expenditure tax expenditures right now are becoming heavily disfavored in washington, they cost a lot of money. They’re not subject to annual review. A lot of them have just been added to the code year after year and nobody’s really looking at these things. So the thinking, maybe, is that, as senator grassley starts teo, look into this. This cost of the tax exemption, it may be in an attempt to paige it as a tax expenditure, and certainly not get rid of the entire tax exemption system. The senator has actually gone on the record as saying that certainly not his attempt, but to look into maybe some of the segments of entity and see if there’s some way to define them on at risk of kind of oversimplifying it. A lot of people talk about this debate of so called good charities versus bad charities in the one area where we think. Policymakers may start is in the fee for service segment of the non profit sector. We certainly know that buy-in that policy makers have been interested in universities and hospitals and credit unions, increasingly software companies that have non-profit status. So that may be where they start. Okay, now, senator grassley is not the ranking republican or he’s. Not sorry, i think that’s wrong he’s not the minority leader any longer, but he still has a lot of power on the senate finance committee. Yeah, he’s, no longer the ranking republican on the finance. There was kind of a, you know, a shuffle after the last election, and he has taken the ranking spot on the judiciary committee. But as i said, he’s still remains on finance. He’s, obviously, senior member hey worked very closely with the chairman of the finance committee, senator baucus, from montana. So he is definitely continuing to play the role that really he’s played since two thousand for in-kind of looking into the sector. And what about senator orrin hatch, who is the the minority leader on the senate finance committee? What’s his general take on non-profits sure, senator hatch eyes the ranking republican on the committee, he, too, works very closely with senator baucus. They have a good working relationship on some of the specific reform issues that grassley has been pushing. We’re not quite sure where senator hatch stands as of yet it’s, still early in the session, but certainly he’s supportive of the of the sector, is a lot of great non-profits in his state that i know he works very closely with. So we’re really hoping he will kind of continue, you know, in this supportive role and hope we turn into a real champion for the nonprofit sector in minutes. Okay, so just very interesting, you know, that the charitable deduction and the and the scope of tax exemption on a new way of looking at that all. Sort of uncharted ground, but could be could be serious. Well, serious implications for the charitable sector, do you do you get that there’s much support for let’s the questioning of the scope of the tax exemption? Or is it really just senator grassley at this point investigating and you don’t see or hear of others interested in the same area? Yeah, i mean, that’s a great question at this point, i would say in terms of getting of cost, you know, pegging a cost to the tax exemption, it does look like it’s coming right from senator grassley. I’m not personally aware of any other members of the senate or the house for that matter that he’s consulted with, but the feeling now is, uh, that they really was just like numbers so they can decide what to do, and certainly, you know, we have advocates for the sector. We’re not afraid of the facts and what the numbers might show, but we have to be very hyre careful to make sure that those numbers aren’t misinterpret in any way that could eventually hurt the sector, there are on enormous amount of hearings going on dealing with these tax reform issues actually, senator baucus, the chairman of the senate finance committee, has pledged to hold a hearing on tax reform every single week that the senate’s in session this year. So we’re going to see a lot of this on right now, we’re just in the beginning of it, and we’re tryingto, you know, get out, you know, figure out what’s going on. But the key point is that both the charitable deduction and potentially even tax exemption issues, particularly in the fee for service segment of the non profit sector, are clearly on the table and carry your work. Just to give people a little behind the scenes is to go to all these hearings and monitor and what else, right? I represent a number of clients, mostly national, nonprofit organizations that care about, uh, issues that specifically pertain to the non profit sector. Things like charitable giving things like non-profit advocacy writes the ability of tax exempt organizations to actually go out and lobby themselves to comment on legislation and regulations, things like that as well as budget and appropriation issues. Those are the types of issues that i work on, so my job is tio you know, help clients develop their policy positions, put those positions in materials that policymakers can understand and will appreciate, and then advocate for those positions on the hill through actual direct lobbying on sometimes grassroots lobbying. And then a lot of what i do is just kind of communicate information there’s so much going on on capitol hill and in the federal agencies that a big part of my job. It’s just get information to teo my clients. I’m with perry, wasserman and he’s, managing director of five o one see strategies, which you’ll find at five oh one see strategies dot com and that c is in eyes in parentheses. Five oh one see strategies dot com, harry the ira charitable rollover let’s, let’s talk about that. It was renewed for two thousand eleven. Where does that stand for beyond two thousand eleven? Sure. Well, exactly. The irony tribal roll over is i would say probably the most popular e-giving incentive right now, non-profits of all sizes air using this this vehicle, so to speak, to raise on enormous amount of funds, which is great news. It was enacted first in two thousand six. It was extended a couple. Times. And where we are now is that a is in law through the end of this year. So the the incentive will expire at the end of twenty eleven. There is, as there has been for the past few years, a tremendous push to, uh, extend and expand the rollover past the end of this year. There’s actually, legislation pending in the senate. Which would permanently extend miree charitable roll over it would lift the hundred thousand dollars cap on direct gifts which exists now um it would also allow certain types of cram giving to begin when the individual when the donor reaches age fifty nine and a half and the other thing the bill would do interestingly it would allow miree rollovers be made teo different types of entities besides public charities that would allow the gifts to go to dahna advise funds to supporting organizations and to private foundations all of which were not included in the original roll over that has since been extended since two thousand six so that legislation is pending in the senate we hope to have a companion bill in the house soon and then what we’re going to do is work to drum of this much support for those two bills as possible and hopefully when tax legislation starts to move the idea the way it works is that we try to get our provisions attached to that bigger bill and see if we can get it signed into law the biggest difficulty we face is that, like everything, it cost money, that change is going to cost the federal government money because it will be for going tax revenue, so that makes it difficult. That’s usually the biggest obstacle we face, but we’re going to keep pushing to see if we can get it extended past two thousand eleven doesn’t become the charitable communities role then too, find a way teo to pay for it, or at least offer suggestions for how to pay for it. Or is that really beyond what? What ah, lobbyist can do or what the community it would be expected to do that that’s advocating for something that those cost money? Yeah, well, that’s, that’s really a great question because it’s something that we face all the time, our position is that we’re pushing the bill. We’re pushing thie idea to extend and expand the ira rollover it’s not our job to come up with ways to pay for it. Those air discussions that we sometimes have with staffers, but the fear is that in order to raise revenue, they would tinker with the tax code as it relates to the non-profit community and that’s certainly. Something we wouldn’t want to see way wouldn’t want to make changes so we can get this provision passed into law. So really, our focus is to drum up a much support as we can. And then as we get closer down the line, um, you know, we start to look at what are called pay for his ways, actually raise revenue and usually that’s a staff level discussion it’s not something that were directly involved with but it’s certainly something we have to be aware of. And i would just add in the that any of your listeners, if they can call their senators and asked him to co sponsor the bill, that would be a huge help. The legislation is f five five seven it’s called the public good miree rollover asked there’s about nine senators. I believe that our honest co sponsors right now, but we need many more. So it be great if people can can call their senators support and in the ongoing effort, if the community wants to participate, is there one of the one of your clients? Maybe that whose list they should be on, or how can people in an ongoing effort you know, if you need to support four months from now, find out about that, right? Well, there’s i mean, there’s a number of ah, particularly national organizations that are working on these issues. The partnership for philanthropic planning, their website is p p p net and dot org on day work on charitable giving issues. Certainly independent sector is kind of the umbrella organization that works on a lot of these different types of issues. They have a lot of great news, national council non-profits also working on these issues. I mean, there’s a lot of people in the field right now who are working on those issues that affect every single non-profit on dh, they have a lot of great sources that i think people should kind of check out. We’re running a little short of time just have about two minutes left, and i wanted teo ask you about continuing resolutions and and how those are hurting some important non-profit programs first, what? So we’ll keep you out of jargon jail because twenty martignetti non-profit was jug in jail, and i’m the self appointed ward not here to see you in their behind bars. What is a continuing resolution. Well, a continuing resolution, our cr i’s basically a short term stopgap way of funding the government. And this week actually, congress clear the city continuing resolution of the fiscal year to fund the government. The idea is that, uh, lawmakers can come to an agreement. They want to avoid a government shutdown. So they just passed the short term continuing resolution kind of like a status quo type situation, essentially the sea ours that have pass so far funding the government for this current fiscal year that we’re in at last year’s level. But in addition to that, they are making billions of dollars in cut on dh. Those cuts include some important non-profit programs, right? Absolutely. The, um, this current continuing resolution actually contains about six billion dollars in cuts. Those cuts are going toe all different types of agencies that funds programs, a lot of which non-profits are the recipients of those cuts also include a tremendous amount of what’s generally referred to his earmarks, but basically it’s just spending that’s directed by congress on a lot of those funds go to non-profit organization. So it’s it’s, not an effort that is specifically targeted at non-profits but because the government, uh, is being funded this way, not through the traditional channels, the traditional appropriations process which have hearings and committee reports and all these different avenues where people can get involved and try to influence legislation because they’re they’re funding it with the short term see ours groups non-profits that don’t have particularly sophisticated lobbying mechanisms in place or kind of shut out of the process and there also facing these large cuts so it’s really something that i think you know, we’re going to see how this plays out. We’re going to see the effects of it in the months on year to come, but it’s certainly a reality in washington right now we have to stop there. You just have to be a little flexible because they do have kids at home but that’s no greater flexibility. I don’t think then you have to be around every other person who works in an office. I mean, people in offices have constraints, they have meetings, they have lunch time s so when it’s a work at home mom instead of lunch time and maybe naptime that you’re working around. So i mean, i haven’t found the constraints to be really that much different. They’re just sort of different labels, and i’ve found the moms who do work for me, who work from home to be really, as i said, conscientious and just outstanding helpers in helping me tow grow my business, so take a look at that. I’m joined now by our recurring and well informed tech consultant, tech contributor, the editor of non-profit technology news. I’m talking, of course about scott koegler scott, how are you? Welcome, i’m doing well, thanks to you well, too, thank you. Good to have you back. We’re going to talk about opportunity a p p p or to nitti after two nitti should you take the plunge and develop a smartphone app for you? Non-profit scott, of course, is i said editor of non-profit technology news, which you’ll find at n p tech news. Dot com scott for those who may not know, there probably are still some people. What is an app? That’s a really good question tony and after is a short for application, of course, and african used to mean a computer program today, the’s things reside on smartphones at the iphone is actually the originator of the term map, although they that the abbreviations been around for a long time. But applications could run anything from a very complex program that is downloaded and installed on the device that the iphone, the, the smartphone, whatever device you may be using to simply i link to a web page that shows up on especially formatted to fit and work properly on the device so there’s a whole gamut there. Can you give us a couple of examples of how non-profits are using aps? Sure, the simplest one is actually just having a link page that was formatted to their website. We had a better article on p tech news couple weeks ago and there’s a couple of examples there. One of them is probably pretty well known to folks that are there your listeners and that’s npr npr as a whole series of applications that are just beautifully done, and they range anywhere from show updates, articles, the segment, the articles just as they would on their website into categories. And by time, they also have aps that link you to their podcasts. Now the podcasts come down through the way of the itunes store, which actually is the way all the apse get onto yours, your iphone devices or your ios devices. Um, but that’s, that’s a really good example. Just take a look at, you know, for those with an iphone or an iowa, which means yeah, i’ll catch you on thie apple apple operating system that runs on the iphone and the ipad. Okay, that’s what ios means, right? Okay, bond, we do know from sources that i am not at liberty to reveal that national public radio actually is striving to be more like talking alternative broadcasting, which is yes, i can’t reveal, but we do have an app for that talking alternative can be heard on and that’s tune in radio it’s one app and has many station so it’s, not ours, but it does include our stream on dh sew, sew, sew your example is a perfect one, i think, because that is a sensible app for an organisation like national public radio here’s where you can find our streams and here’s our show schedule so sort of the lesson there maybe, is that the cap needs to be relevant to the people who are your constituents, right? Absolutely it’s it’s another way to stay in touch with your constituents with those folks you hope to be constituents and it’s i think the point is really just like any kind of publishing or publication, the what’s important is the content. So if you have information that’s relevant and interesting to the people that you’re addressing, they will be not only interested in installing the app but also going back to it. You know, there are how many’s two hundred fifty thousand dafs just in the itunes store and then there’s all of the tall, the the google aps and, you know, there’s getting to be an increasing number of blackberry aps, so if it gets to be very, very confusing and so you’re you’re competing with a lot of, well, what a competition. So you you need to be relevant and available? Yeah, we’ll talk in a few minutes about how to promote your app on get it, get it seen among these hundreds. Of thousands. So so it sounds like if you were going to develop a nap for your non-profit that you develop it for a particular type of phone. So you do it for the iphone or for the blackberry. Is that how it works? Um, that’s a good question, of course, the iphone might now have a majority of of users, though that’s the thing pretty quick with the android devices that are coming out and all the different kinds of variations there? Uh, ideally, what you want to do is have one after that is able to run on anyone of basically those three platforms, and there are companies that will do that. I don’t i don’t exactly know which ones do that, but i do know that it is becoming easier to do their cem some applications platforms that are provided by adobe corporation, people make photo shop and ah, and, uh, acrobat and those kind of things they are able to kind of, you know, take one application and make it playable on multiple kinds of devices, but okay, and the three platforms that you alluded to, the three platforms are our iphone, blackberry and android correct? Okay, the most popular smartphones, right? And those seven phone operating systems coming oppa’s well, i don’t know if you know that windows phone seven platform will be replacing the nokia software application. Is that running okay? Songs, which are, you know, amazingly prevalent. Kind all over the world, but that’ll be a while before that happens, so they’re actually are for major plan how to look at. Okay, so if you if you think you have an idea that’s that may be engaging that’s really, your point is, you know you want to engage your constituents, what’s the first thing you should look at if you if you think you want to developing an app for your non-profit i say the first do is to look around and search the adjusting applications, see if something similar to it, if there’s one competing with it, or if there’s one that you might even be able to piggyback on, some of these applications have been developed for specific company, while some of them are fairly generic and could be repurposed. In other words, the provider i developed a kind of a shell for an application, and for some may be reduced amount of money, they could be able to revise it so that it’s specific to yours. So look around and see what’s out there, and if any of them are are pertinent to what you’re trying to do, you know, there’s also it could be a little bit of cleverness built into aps. I know i’m a zipcar member and on the zipcar app, they’ve added something that i don’t think really is necessary but it’s cute you khun beep the horn of your car using their app beaconfire well, i guess yeah doesn’t mean, i guess it could have that practical purpose, too, and you could certainly unlock your car, but i just there there are other examples to it just being as well as engaging, just being a little clever. Bradrick and i think that is finding out what it is you probably already have some constituency, you have an email list, young people that come to your website, you might just put up there in an article that sense, considering developing and after for mobile devices, what do you need? You know, it’s surprising what people will tell you, and i would imagine that your example, the zip car was probably generated by somebody who was frustrated because there were six zip cars in the parking lot. We’re talking about opportunity with our regular tech contributor, scott koegler scott, about the cost of doing this. It seems like it could be a little costly endeavor and that’s exactly why i remember you look around and see if there’s something out there that you could make use of right, because it’s not get down to it is programming that were to cost wanted in this pasta posting your application, you’re apt to the eiffel store to the android or whatever those are, i guess, almost negligible when you get down to a few hundred dollars. But the bigger cost is actually development of the program and it’s not really possible to put a number on that because they’re so widely based on what your purpose is. But yes, it can get very expensive. Yeah, you’re paying for program or time, but your article on the subject has some ideas about reducing that cost right, i would say. You know, you want teo to see if your community has any programming capability. You never know who your constituents are. Really so possibly make people out there have done this or know how to do it for our program. Would just like to donate either the time or or just make a financial donation to get the work done. Also seems like it could be maybe a good project for ah, computer science. College intern. Sure. Any of those programming task? Um, you know, take you see if you can take advantage of somebody’s educational experience and maybe they can do it is a project for class for maybe they just need experience and, you know, they never never downplay the the ability to get somebody else’s name exposed. So if you have, for instance, student or someone just aspiring to be a programmer or to create applications like this, just putting their name on every users phone, you know, could be incentive enough for them to do that. And after you’ve done this, then how about trying to get your kapin recognized among the hundreds of thousands that are out there? Yep. Good point. The main. Yeah, the main way i would see it is just the social networking, the networking that you already have in place. In other words, let your constituency no in the same methods used to let them know about other things. So if it’s female shoot it out in an e mail, if it’s on facebook uh, certainly put on facebook that you got it there, i don’t know if we talked about something called q r codes. Now, why don’t you go ahead? Cukor codes, why don’t you explain what these are? Okay? And i’m going to be in jargon jail here because i don’t know what you are, but i do ok, i’ll let you out. I wish i had a set of keys because i would jingle them for your funny little cerini barcode think it’s got a bunch of little dots and a little square you are, and the purpose of it is you can put that on a website or you can even print it. I have one in the back of my business card and people can aim there their smartphone at it, and the smart phone will read that and automatically go out and do whatever. That q r code instructs in this case it would be to actually download the app so it makes a real simple. They don’t type anything, and they just point the phone at click the picture and off they go in, they downloaded it makes it really, really simple. Q r stands for quick response, right? Yeah. Quick response, of course. And i see them on the sides of buses in new york city. Like scott said you, you either snap it. What? Will you take a picture of it? In some cases or in others you can use your barcode scanner, which would be an app. You have an app that scans barcodes and that will that will recognize the he’s black and white diagrams that that bring you somewhere. I even used them in my in my seminars at the end, when i want people to know where they confined all my seminar slides, which is at my blogged i have ah, q r code direct them to the block. So coming. Prevalent? Yeah, they are actually it’s. Interesting. They were originally developed for industrial use. Factory manufacturing. T get machines to operate in a certain way at a certain time, but it’s so so your point is you could use the q r code to get your constituents two download your your new app. Absolutely, and you can use the cure echoes for other things as you just pointed out as well. But again, getting your app noticed is just like getting anything else noticed. You you let your people know, ask them to spread the word. And if you if you’ve done the first piece of magic, which is it’s something that’s useful and interesting and people want to use, then they’re going to tell people about it. So, uh, you know, it’s, self propagating, hopefully, yeah. And i was going to emphasize the point you just did is having something that’s useful, clever and related to your charitable mission. I mean, this is what the people who your constituents love you for. They love you for your charitable work. It’s got to be related to the charitable mission. And i should say one thing about some applications in particular. And i think when a lot of folks think of non-profit applications were perhaps they they go directly to the e-giving function. So in other words, you want to be able to bring up on an app that lets me make a donation come? Unfortunately, apple has said that you can’t do that, so that leaves out the entire ios platform. You cannot actually take donations through an ad, which is there’s a whole movement behind getting rid of that restriction. So, as you might imagine, yeah, but i could see a way around it, maybe if if, if a non-profit had maybe a relationship with certain stores, and maybe the app could be to find those that the nearest one of those stores where if you buy something, maybe coffee at starbucks or whatever a portion goes back to the charity, so maybe it could be like a locator sure, that would be a great application would be something to be fun and, you know, everybody drinks coffee, and we’re at least a lot of us drink coffee, so yeah, that would be something to pursue. All right, sky drinkwater, she’s got okay. I’m really not a coffee drinker, but most people do. I know i’m in the vast minority vast minority i’ve been with scott koegler and he’s, our regular tech contributor and he’s. She has over twenty years experience in human resource is prior to consulting, she held officer positions that gulf insurance and bankers trust, which is now deutsche bank, and she has the designation sph are safer, which i said in a previous show, too, which is much more significant than i’m making it sound it’s, a senior professional in human resource, is and karen is with me in the studio. Welcome, karen hi. Also in the studio with us is alice mang and alice is the executive director of the museum of chinese in america. Mocha alice, welcome to the studio. Hello morning. I’m excited because i’ve been trying to get this feature off the ground for some time, and now we’ve done it. This is our first segment of we’re looking where we’re going to help non-profits who have a job opening to think strategically about the nuts and bolts the details of that job opening and then also have it that opening ah, coordinates with the entire sort of broader looking strategy of the organization. So, alice, i want to thank you for letting us profile the opening that the museum has. Thankyou. Very no, my pleasure. Thank you. Why don’t you tell us a little about the museum of chinese in america first? Yes. The museum of chinese in america has been around in new york for about thirty one years as ah, chinatown start off in chinatown history project. But about five years ago, the board really went on ah, limp decide to build the museum to become a national museum of chinese in america, so collecting arctic fact collecting stories of the national immigration story of chinese in america. So with that in mind, the museum willie went on, you know, kind of expanded from a two thousand square feet in the middle of mulberry street to our current location to fifteen centris tree with fourteen thousand square feet in a beautiful space designed for us by the same architect, maya lin, who designed the vietnam memorial. So with that in mind, the museum really went on really change its mission from chinatown to national. And so for the past, with a museum. The new news site new site on two fifteen center open on september of two thousand nine. So in some ways, i kind of see ourself as a new start up because we, although, have a proud history in chinatown, very proud of our new york roots. And, you know, new york is where a lot of the chinese immigrants, when they first come to united states start. So it is an ideal place for a museum. But in terms of right now, we really are excited about the possibility of a trap building traffic, international traffic, israel’s, national traffic and also telling the national story of accomplishment of chinese in america. So it’s a really exciting time for us, what’s the opening that we’re here to talk about the opening is curatorial position. It’s, a curator and director of exhibition it’s. A very important position. In fact, i would say it’s probably one of the most important position in for museum like ourselves. It really is thie kind of the heart and soul of the organization to tell to help us fielder vision for the knicks, the national side of things, and tell the our national story. Okay. And you have the job description and i know karen, you’ve reviewed the job description. Yes, karen what’s the what’s the purpose of a job description first, in addition to being required by law, department of labor requires it. So i’d be in new york state department of labor. Yes. Okay, it just makes good business sense for someone when you’re looking for for someone to know what you’re looking for as a screening tool, it also is a way of measuring success. If you don’t know what you want the person to do, how can you tell if they succeed? It’s also a great measure to figure out when you’re doing your strategic plan, as alice is doing with the museum right now, what do you want? Change from opposition and in this case is an existing position. What do you need the next person to bring in? In addition to the skill set or instead of certain skills to take the museum to the next level? So so really it is. It has a sort of a micro purpose as well as a macro purpose. Absolutely. We focus on that individual job. But then also, how does that job thing to the larger strategic plan. Which could be an alice alice in your case. What is it? A three to five year strategic planning? Five year strategic? Yes. Yes. Okay. Uh, all right. Well, let’s, talk a little detail about the job description because that’s, really the first step, and maybe what i’ll do is we’ll have the job description on my block. So we’ll get this in a digital format from you, allison, for the blogger post for this show will be linked to it so people can can look as we’re talking about it in some detail. Karen what what feedback do you have about the job description for this curator and director of exemption exhibitions? Position? It certainly details a lot of the transactions. One of the things that i would as a reader not knowing a lot about the museum is how large is a museum what’s the funding i would if i’m a job seeker again, i’m researching the organization through every piece of information i can find out about them. And that includes googling it, looking at job descriptions. And when i see a job description that has a lot of transactions in it as an ad and again, i want to differentiate job description tells me what my job is, an advertisement. So it gives me an overview of what you’re looking for, and we’re going to get into the advertisement shortly after this break. Okay, yeah, but one of the things i would be looking for us what’s the extent of this position. Andi, in reading this job description, it seems that it has a wonderful component for the right person, and this is the tricky piece to be able to think strategically but implement tactically. And i think that is one of the most fun pieces of this position, but also one of the more challenging for you, alice, and finding the right person. That’s sure, that’s true, and we have been getting resumes in, and i think part of the problem is people been focusing in some ways, maybe too much on the curatorial, the curator side of it. So the resumes we’ve been getting in has been very much on the heart side of it, and we are a heritage museum, although we are right now doing. In new and interesting exhibitions, but at the fundamental of it is still at heritage museum. So i think i kind of get the sense that people look at the job title and then that’s it. So we’ve been getting syriza resume. That just is not the right fit, okay? And when we continue, we’re going to take a break now. But when we continue, we’re going to talk about whether the right resumes are coming in and how to make sure that people are paying attention to the their responsibilities as jobseekers. I’m joined with by karen bradunas, hr consultant, and alice mang, the executive director of the museum of chinese in america and ladies, right before the break, we were talking about the problem that alice seems to be facing, that it seems like a lot of the people who are applying for this job are not paying attention to the second half of it. The director of exhibitions, part karen. What? What are the responsibilities of the job seeker? In my opinion, i think that you’re here to give your opinion, we’re interested in your opinion, okay, a job seeker who is not entry level someone at a curated director level should really be doing a lot of research in postings, and this posting i’ve seen it on idealist has a lot of substance about the museum, its history. I would be concerned about someone sending in a resume and cover letter that really only addressed his half of the the job and at least doesn’t address the other half in the cover letter, and in fact, you can. One of the challenges your museum faces is you’ve got big ideas and small staff right now to do it, so you really need the job seeker toe own that piece off, really giving you what you need now and talking about what they can do for you in the future. One of the things you may want to consider is in the posting, and i’d recommend an ad, not a job description for the reason that ambiguity might be a good thing on that. The specifics you give is in your cover letter, please identify how you’ve built all. Museum in the past or an exhibition in the past, your heritage ethnography, background dahna and your ability to handle t develop a strategic plan and implement it. So, karen, in the advertisement, your recommendation is that an employer be that specific about what the applicant should should address in their in their materials? Yes. Okay, because that becomes your screening tool. You have eleven people, and right now i’m assuming you and maybe one of the person are doing all the screening. And if you just think in terms of business hourly rate and what, how much time you’re taking, you’re going to need someone who can come in and come to you with ideas. Why not test that before they get in the door for an interview? Right? That’s correct. And it really is interesting in that, you know, we’d list very clearly, i think, maybe maybe stressing this more, maybe top of mind rather than the bottom of the requirements. We are looking for somebody with a masters rick weapon in history. Anthropology are history. But it was interesting that how many of thie resume? We were getting our really entry level, and one particular one was even not related in criminology. So it was just the requirements are actually we wanted to make a very specific but people are really reading that that that, you know, getting that detail. I think i would recommend not putting the job description up on and saying mocha is a heritage museum with you talking about the advertisement, the advertisement in the advertisement, what i i would change idealist i know idealised. A lot of organizations put the entire job description up there just for odin’s that’s, idealist, dot org’s, idealist dot org’s where counter frank, which is one of the main posting site, if not demain for not-for-profits i would be really pretty vague. And on lee say, you know, we’re looking to expand. We’re looking for a position of someone who can be strategic, both strategic and tactical, interested in receiving resumes. And then if the the masters is required in specific areas, put that in, would you turn down someone with the bachelors that has done all sorts of stuff? I mean, that’s a question if you wouldn’t, then you need to change the job description. That’s a concern i have a lot of people put down. Masters. So what, you end up getting his recent college grads with their masters? I don’t know that you based on what you’ve taught talked about in this job description, you can afford someone coming right out of school with no, no experience doing this. We also mentioned at least two years, two years prior experience, but everything people but that’s interesting people interpret that two years as even there, two years and intern for two years at security, they count that. So which is really yes, um, sometimes when you put too much, but i think you have a good point about this position more than the other positions we’ve hyre i think we’ve hired a previous development director, which is different, this one really requires a lot more strategic and, you know, show us what you’ve got that you know and experience with this development, you know, if you can fund-raising khun fund-raising right fundrasing so so that’s it there’s a difference in fund-raising you can tell right away, can you do it? This requires some things that you may not see traction or results right away, so even two years might not be enough, so i would. Recommend saying in your cover letter, please outline how you’ve done this somewhere else on the specifics of the very interesting suggestions, as i pointed out earlier just to be specific that the employer be specific about what they’re looking for in your cover letter and in your you’re applying materials. Karen let’s, uh, explore the advertisement a little more. You mentioned idealist dot or gets it is a very common sight. I see a lot of non-profit ads on craigslist. What? So we’ll talk more about the museum where they should be, where you recommend they advertise, but let’s talk about craigslist cause i see a lot of ads there craigslist ten years ago is very different than it is now in this market. Everybody’s advertising on craigslist, it’s, inexpensive, and i think for what the museum is trying to dio i wouldn’t recommend it. I think it it dilute your mission a little bit and maybe even dilute the brand? I think so, because i really do because you’re talking a little bit. You’ve been alluding to the job description and the whole process as as playing into the brand of the organization it is, i talk a lot about recruiting, being a marketing function. And i know we’ve talked about this in the past. How you, how you can make a single. Cohesive message about your organization in everything you do, the more you will attract the kinds of people you want, assuming that what you’re conveying to the outside world is in line with what you are. So if you have a recruiting process that’s very well organized in an organization that’s organized and that you clear about what you want, you measure that and it’s it’s, very straightforward, that assist you in getting the right people in the door. Then one question i have for crixus we again because we’re in the hiring mo in some ways have huh? Posted three positions on quite close, the development director position a swell as a part time p r communication position and now this position and i find definitely agree with you for this particular position that what we’re looking for, craig’s just it’s not getting us a kind of people were looking for even the development position. I would say we were not getting the kind of quality, but on the other hand, this part time p r communication. Yeah, that we’re finding definite getting the numbers, and we’re really seen some real interesting resumes, and i think one of the some of the people we we were we’ve interview have come from craigslist. Where’s i found the more senior level full time justin the fit was not there. Yeah, even though you’ll see positions at you, no significant sours and experience listening craigslist you’ll also see do you want to make two thousand dollars from home being a telemarketer, you know, and then posted everywhere so there’s a it’s a really wide range? And is that kind of is that the kind of company that on organization wants to keep in its right his job in its job advertisement cause that’s all you know where your name is seen that that all promotes your brand or detracts from your brand? And i’ll just remind listeners that about two weeks ago i had a full hour show called branded and my guest then was howard levy of the red rooster group. We talked all about creating your brand, identifying it and then maintaining and propagating it so you could look back, listen back to that show, but now very interesting. You know how the job search process is feeds into the marketing. So, karen, where where would you recommend that mocha? Be, aside from idealist, what other resource is might there be for advertising this job? I’m going. Do you talk about a long term strategy, which is to develop strategic alliances with all the asian, you know, the asia society, the asian programs that colombian in you, which i know that you already have an intern. I don’t know that it’s, a formal intern program within you, i’d recommend developing a former one, especially with your goals. The idea is to develop enough traction so that when you have an opening, you can put it on twitter, you can put it on linkedin and you can put on your facebook page and you do need a facebook page so that or an event so that you’ve got that information being tweeted out elsewhere, the days of mailings are okay, but they’re not the main waited to reach iranians in terms of lincoln. I think you do have an organizational profile there. I would recommend joining the not-for-profits groups, and one of them is modeling, modeling and the other is non-profit boards moflow these air separate sites aside from lincoln? No, they’re on lincoln. What you do know jomo joo link? M o j a. I think it was modeling motility ailing. Okay. And when you do, you go on linked in you pull up a tab called groups and you can get in alphabetical listing of groups. And i’m telling you what i do for my business. I’m giving you first hand. You join those groups and you have ah, lim, i think there’s been enough. Twenty five or fifty groups you conjoined but you khun un. Join and you can start to invite people to join your network, and i’d be really i carefully craft again with your marketing pr person, and you’re going to be aligned with your strategy off why you want this link and it it may be to further strengthen the museums mission and to really provide a more information about looking for them for for chinese in america on a national level, not just new york. Karen, i’d like to go back to something you suggested just a minute ago relationships with columbia asian studies program and then you and alice, i’m sure you’re aware that that those programs exist. Yes, and i just think i’m just thinking as a fundraiser that could be valuable to because there might be joint events or something, and maybe alumni of those programs get close to the museum. I see a benefit their potential long term is, karen said longer term thinking, but long term fund-raising two way are currently doing that quite a bit with the other universities, for example, we’ve done some program with theo in china and coming up in a few weeks, we’re going to do something with ohio state. University s o those hyre alliances were building. But right now what? Karen suggestions really? Something that we’ve been doing? Kind of ad hoc working with the sun, the departments that might have interns or people who are ideal candidates but that’s a very good idea in terms of building it long term getting to know the these institutions have been really easy in new york. There’s a lot of ah love nights from ah ivy’s o r big ten whatever that they many of them are chinese. And in america chinese americans, they they’ve kind of gravitated toward so we we’ve begun to build that relationship, but to take it further, that would be something that i would love to explore. And then karen’s recommendation is you could use those relationships in this again, going from the track around out of the micro to advertise your job there post for their alumni, right, it’s not just jobs this’s a marketing function. It really is. You are a strong is the company you keep correct. And the more you really taking it from a sort of an infancy. Latto amore mature organization that’s on the par with a night early asia society. And so to do that, you want to develop strategic partnerships. And one way to do that with schools is through formal intern program’s. And you wanna have maybe guest speakers from these other organizations, and capitalize on the things that you’ve already done and make sure that they’re posted on your website prominently on the first page. Have that keep changing of what’s happening now, to show that it’s, a vibrant organization, to have that on linkedin, to have it, you know, tweeted. I’m going to go to another not-for-profits robin hood, robin hood, i follow them on twitter and they have uninterested way of when things were happening, they tweeted out and they’ve got a lot of followers, so i think that this would be a great way for your organization, intimate in just the two minutes we have left, i’d like to move to the screening of applicants and alice, karen asked before is it just is that you and one of the person doing the screening? So for right, it’s myself in our director of operations of us? Yes, and karen, you’re your initial advice was if a job seeker isn’t fulfilling their responsibilities to follow directions and to do research that’s a method of screening, what else do you recommend? I think it’s really important that the people screening the resumes are really clear about the key points of this job for me in reading it and correct me if i didn’t get it right it’s really important that you have someone that that is able to what you know, run on their own and be able to do all of the strategic type things, but also has have done it and not with staff. So calling that out of a resume and looking for that someone who can quantify what they’ve done as well as the background are the key areas and i scan understand that most people in human resource has spent less than a minute on a resume. That’s how how much time? So i would focus a lot on the cover letter, and if someone can’t read your job description and give you what you want the cover letter, can you really afford to have them on staff? Allison, just the less than a minute we have left what’s your experience been so far with the screening, how is that going? Well, so far we received about twenty two resumes and out of the twenty two, i would say only one that from the listing said we will be talking to she looked like she had something that we’re looking for, the other two that i will be interviewing our have come from relationships, people who know about as one of our board members and one of our friends, another museum. So so what i’m this has really been helpful in that how to use these things are strategically is very important because i’m been kind of disappointed at the quality of the resident has been coming in and so moving forward will probably more like you said, you know, maybe you don’t have to put everything down, but we’ll look at the big, big picture and seeing somebody who could help implemented on baby leveraging your relationships with these educational institutions to and we have done that we have done that, but maybe more, i think more in depth way we need to do excellent ladies, i want to thank you both very much. We’re talking with scott koegler and he is the editor of non-profit technology news, which you’ll find at n p tech news. Dot com this week we’re talking about seven things that you must do on your facebook page. You set the thing up, and then what? So scott this’s and this is an active it’s the current article one of the current articles at the n p tech news dot com site. Yeah, scott what what’s what’s the first thing that of the seven? Well, first of all, yes, i assume that most people that air doing any kind of business or any kind of social interaction already have a facebook page. Uh, what happens, though, is that people assume that because they have a facebook page that that translates into their work environment and that that’s actually generally not the case facebook was set up as a personal interaction, you know? I mean, if you’ve seen the movie you know it’s about about college life, the movie is a social night greater, and that has probably the most important next step to make is to set up a fan page and fran pages are the business, uh, segment of facebook so that’s the first step, tony so it’s it’s ah it’s a page for your organization. You’re not playing off your building off your own personal page you’re saying is correct. It generally is a part it’s it’s linked to your personal page because you have to have a personal account. Ok, in order to get a fan page set up. But yes, it’s it’s distinct it’s a page that people can go to directly and it is all about business. Okay, i see and this this show there’s a facebook fan page for tony martignetti non-profit radio and indeed a scott said it’s linked to my personal account, but it’s a separate presence and people post separately on there usually guests, and usually they’re they’re happy. So that’s that’s try to get some interaction on that on that page, you also recommend customizing and engaging people. Why don’t you say a little about that? Oppcoll customizing is probably the most important part because you wanted to take on the personality of the business handup facebook pages have a way of looking pretty much like facebook pages. The difference is with with fan pages you khun make it look more much more like a web page, you’re still gonna have the advertisements and all that stuff along the right hand column because that’s how facebook makes money, but you can almost almost customized the entire page the rest of the page to look the way you want it on dh what are some ways of doing that? Well, i’m going to give you a little extra help here, because, frankly, that’s been a very difficult thing to do. I mean, you needed to know these different languages. F b, m l, which is facebook markup language. Thank you for coming off shoot of html, you know, hypertext. So facebook, mark, language, facebook, mark up, language that it’s his own language for facebook. Yeah, i believe that. Okay, but what? You don’t get well, and thanks for keeping yourself out of jargon. Jail smart. What? So so you’re you’re saying people do not have to know. F b m l. For the most part, up until probably last week, you really did or you had to hire someone in order to customize it for you. It was possible to make relatively minor changes, like add images and add, you know, little pieces of applications that were supplied by facebook, but i’ve come across an application called short stack, just like pancakes, you know, short staffed, short stack yeah, and i’ll give you the link for it. It’s short stack at so shortstops k a p p dot com and it’s it’s an amazing piece of work, it’s free it’s free to start out. I mean, you have to pay for it. By the way, i disclaimer here i don’t make anything out of this. I just like the application because it really allows someone to set up a facebook fan page in about ten minutes. Um, so i was able to set one up, for instance, by going there and, you know, he do the usual thing allow facebook to link to this page and that kind of thing, and then it has a set of built in applications that include video web connections like me, but it’s all those kind of things that are really the kind of the juice behind the fan page. Those are the things that make it much more interactive, it makes it look like you’re you’re company website, and it gives people something teo connect to their and that that’s, you know, kind of leads us into the next step, okay, so before we get to that one, engaging people just so you want to make your facebook fan page consistent with your overall brand, is that that’s that’s really, what you’re saying, right, exactly. One of the first things i did when i set up the fan page was that i used my company logo, and i used that as the main image, and there are a couple places you can put it, but i made it really big right at the top so that people couldn’t mistake the fact that, you know, this was the same company that they’re used to seeing on the on the dedicated web page. Well, since you’re using years as an example, where on facebook will be find your page that people can look at oh, you know, i know you’re going to ask you, let me look for scott scott koegler the tech guy doesn’t even know his own ur ellen facebook identity. Oh, man, all right, he’ll come up with that awful all right, well, maybe we could just search for kegel er i don’t know. Okay, we’re communicating, actually, it’s not that it’s it’s actually it’s it’s a it’s a sight that i’ve set up for an event it’s called i shot the wilkes burrows it’s a photo shoot that i’m doing so if you do a facebook search for i shot the wilkes burrows or i shot wilkes bro’s either one of those will get you there. All right, well, why don’t you spell wilkes borrows for us? Sure, wuhl k s the o r o o k and that’ll take us to the facebook page that you’re referring to, which you use the short stack app tio to create is that right? Zach lee and i’ve got my company logo there. I’ve got a sign up for updates for my newsletter i’ve got a video clip and i’ve got the sign up work-life for the newsletter you also have a thing there that day, uh, web map so it brings in a google maps if your location specific, it’ll actually show people where you are. Ok? And i’m looking at it right now in the studio and i like your hat. Is that the email which has log in? I like that red button with the with the envelope on it. That’s very engaging. Great. Right. Is that to sign up for your letter? Yes, that sign up for this. Okay. Excellent. Yes. So i see a lot of color. I see the the the identity of the branding. Your right. Aside from the ads on the right, it looks very much like a web page, right? I mean, ah, website. Sorry, website. It is a web page. Yeah, right. Okay, i also see our producer sam has fifty six messages that he has not replied to yet samuel behind sam is behind on his facebook communication’s not engaging people, not engaging correctly. People alt-right engage him and he’s not responding. All right, so that the engaging yes engagement as you serve, that that page that you’re looking at has a couple of engaged, every isn’t it? One is to sign up for newsletter updates. And the other is when people come here, of course, they could, like button and that’s it probably the most important and powerful part of being a sex book. President. What do you know what that do when somebody clicks? You’re like, but what does that do for you? What it does for me is that exposes what you like all the people that you know. So if you have friends, if you have no two hundred or five hundred or ten thousand different friends, they will all see that you like that. It’ll appear in your new wall or in their in their wall as their stream of of activity. Okay. And when you post on the i shot the wilkes burrows paige, what does that mean for everybody who likes that page? Um, i’m depending on what i posed. It will then advise them that something else was you okay? That’s? Only a person liked it. Okay, so that’s, our new like that. Then you’ll get my updates. But if somebody else that is oppcoll this, your friend didn’t also like it. They won’t see anything. Any activity from it? Okay, but the people who have liked it will see the new activity. Right? Durney welcome back home with scott koegler, the editor of non-profit technology news, and we’re talking about seven things you must do on your non-profits facebook page. Scott way had a question come in lot from the live studio audience that’s, the producer, sam. What about short stack app? If you already have a page set up, can you still use short stack app? I used it as a initial development. I understand that the system will rely to add multiple tabs, two pages, so so fan page could have multiple tabs, so using short stack at you can have additional cab functions to an existing page that’s my understanding, although i haven’t tried it. Ok, ok, and if people are interested, they can go to short stack app dot com andi, see what’s there. So so before that, though, you had to know the facebook mark up language that’s, right? That’s correct. There were applications that were pre built using the fb ml, but you still had to use those and they were kind of all over the place. This puts a complete set of functions in one spot and makes it really easy to set up. All right, so we talked about some of the engagement and use your your page as an example. What about you’re? Next? You’re next advice in those seven steps consistency, consistency, consistency is important. And i you know, this goes back to when we talked about newsletters and i talked about being consistent with your message, yes, and publishing regularly and being on point all the time those same things i mean, we’re talking about communications, we’re talking about providing publishing and getting people engaged with you and it’s important that in any of those cases, you remain consistent, and in my case, i prefer to make maintain the consistency in terms of the frequency of publication and a message so frequency can be whatever you believed to be correct. I try to teo put facebook updates up about two to three times a week at this point, we’re this particular venture is just in its beginning stages, so there’s not a lot of activity going on now, and i expect to increase that frequency. But again, i don’t want to do ten today and none tomorrow that that’s kind of the killer right there, and if you’re over posting, people are going to start to disregard your posts. I would think right? And you really can’t dislike can’t unlike somebody, i don’t think that you can turn them off, you can go to the to their posting and say, don’t show any more postings from this person or from this entity, and you certainly don’t want to do that, right? Yeah, so over posting khun b can be obnoxious to people, by the way, i hope that the break you went over and clicked on the like button of tony martignetti non-profit i did children. Thank you. Okay. All right. Thank you for your bona fide now. It’s. So, yeah, so, you know, interesting, even in the first segment, which was the first second of today’s show, which was about a job opening at the museum of chinese in america. We’re talking about using that job opening to be toe promote your brand and in terms of how you describe your institution and where you advertise that opening and so, you know, that threat is running through the conversation you and i are having about your facebook page. Co-branding right? And i think any time that you can get people to look at what you’re doing, you want to again be consistent and keep their branding active and keep it the same so that people recognize it. I think i think job openings are perfect way of not to spread your message because not everybody’s going to get the job, but there certainly are lots of people who are interested exactly right, and even people who aren’t if the ad is in the right place, it’s exposure and all the all the message exactly what you’re saying now and what you did say earlier, too. In a previous show, we talked about newsletters that that message needs to be consistent. Yeah, what about your next up is into integrating what’s your message? They’re integrating this facebook page with with what i’ll go back to my my page, and if you look at that, you’ll see that i’ve brought in video and that video is on youtube, i think was on youtube, i think it’s either youtube video, but it’s it was integrated from from a remote site. You could do the same thing with liquor, so if you have content in other places and falik arrested on flicker is is for photographs. Is that right? Photographs exactly, actually. It’s photographs and video and i believe that’s f l i c k e r dot com f l i c k e r. Okay, so, so i’m sorry. Interrupted. I just wanted the audience to know what it is we’re talking about george in jail. You know we get jogging there. Go ahead. So integration, please. Continue, right? You want you want to bring in whatever content you have these days. There are so many places to put content, images, videos, blogged postings, all those things are all over the place it’s possible to have twenty or so different websites that contain information about you or your brand, and the key here is to bring all those together so that they appear in the same place rather than to recreate them and duplicated, you know, go through all that work if you’re posting in one place, make it appear and we’re talking about facebook here, so make it make that appear in facebook as part of facebook. Okay, averaging, i think ki yeah on dso you mentioned the two video sites that are most popular yahoo and video i know i use those for my own work and also for the radio show. But, yes, integration of all these different sites now since we’re looking at your page is the example. Oh, would you have just a minute left? I was going to ask you about your project, but we have to continue let’s see contests. What about contests that you know that’s? A great thing. Contests are easy to do, and they don’t really have to be big can’t you don’t have to really give away a lot of stuff, and, uh, we’ll talk about my project it’s, a photo walk, and one of the things i’m doing is i’m giving away the non-profit and we’re giving away photographic items. If you look at the website itself, you’ll see that we have had people donate products so that they could get the publicity on my website, and then they will donate these air typically software products, so their cost and this is almost nothing, but it drives people to engage. They may cost the vendor nothing but the people that that want them, they have some value, they have some intrinsic value. Plus they have monetary value even though they probably won’t sell them. But so yeah, contest are definite draw people love free thing, scott and just the twenty seconds or so we have left. Why don’t you touch on the last of the seven gated rewards? Gated rewards is like a paywall basically, it’s if you want to read this, you’re going to do something for me. Alice aspen, march welcome to the show. Thank you, tony alice, there aren’t many people talking about paying attention and giving attention to others. What first do you mean when you’re talking about attention? Well, first of all, you’re right, nobody is talking about it like i am paying attention is the most important part of our lives because attention is with us twenty four seven and people know today when you’re not paying attention, especially when you’re on your cell phone or you’re texting or you’ve got your earphones on or you’re looking at your computer or your answering a phone, and people feel that what i mean by paying attention or being present is when you are listening to somebody when you are looking at them, when you’re in their energetic field and when you’re not people can feel invisible or not respected or not included are angry and they they withdraw, they act out the roots of your work are pretty personal. Yes, they are because i have three adult sons, and one day i discovered that my youngest one, who had been a television addict nobody was talking about that at all at that time had gone on to abuse drugs, and i was really terrified, tony, that i could lose him. And so i went looking for the role i played in his dysfunctional behavior and att first i changed my life, selby. But i didn’t know what i was looking for. It was very frustrating until i had an epiphany in a u c l a extension class. I lived in los angeles at the time i had an epiphany over the word attention, and i knew that was a clue. So then i went looking for everywhere i could find anything about it, and strangely enough, the on ly place i found it was attached to a d h d and a d day, and that wasn’t really what i was looking for, so i went further into the subject and i have a generalist mind, and pretty soon i realized i was reading about attention, but they never used the word. So in about a year, i had a body of work, which i took to a spot that i’d spoken at years before, and i realized that my subject matter resonated with everybody because attention is everybody’s primary need my guest is alice aspen march, founder of the attention factor, and we’re taking your calls today. The number to call for alice is eight seven seven for eight xero forty one twenty eight, seven, seven for eight xero for one to zero for calls to alice aspen, march alice it sounds like with greater attention we can increase our own and maybe and probably other people’s productivity efficiency as well as well being. Tony, you’ve just said the magic words yes, the deprivation of attention leads to it can lead to disease, it can lead to violence it can lead to stealing in in corporate the corporate world, people need attention and when they don’t get it, they’ve got to act out. So when they do get the kind they need, of course, productivity goes up. Morale in a corporate world goes up, people’s relationships change and our positive i’ve had people who have heard me on a ship or in europe or new zealand and say to me afterwards, i don’t believe this. Why haven’t we heard this before? You basically just change. You saved my daughter’s life or i’m going home and treat my employees differently, or i’ve got to do something about my wife or now i know what’s been wrong and my marriage for forty three years yes, is this is obviously pervasive work that you’re doing affecting personal and professional relationships and to bring it home for our listeners, i’m thinking about relationships with boardmember sze volunteers, co workers, co workers may be working for you or you’re working for them or against you when you mentioned violence, that makes me think a little bit of that phrase going postal violence, that’s not the only place the postal service is not the only place where people where we’ve seen violence in the workplace, certainly, but it can rise to that level. And is your sense that a lot of that violence stems from people not being respected and getting attention in words of one syllable, yes, and, you know, of course, that expression going postal came out of the post office, you see, an exit interview is vital for people that you’re letting go because it’s a closure for them, and if they don’t get that when they don’t get that they feel invisible. And he certainly went back to the workplace and made himself visible by taking out a lot of people, you know? And even more recently, there was something in in binghamton, new york, yes, on alison and just the minute we have left before the break, alice really back of course after the break may be there just one one way you can give us one or two of listening better. How can we be better at giving attention? Well, first of all, you could turn off all your tech stuff. Okay, so she’s vital, vital tony? Yes, that’s ah that’s first and foremost is my cell phone on vibrate? I think, yes, i did do it for the show. But yes, you’re right know where we have we have kottler way have become immersed in a culture that does not listen does not listen to each other and it doesn’t seem to be getting any better, and people are feeling out there talking about that more that he doesn’t listen to me or they don’t listen to me or she doesn’t listen to me. Dot com alice. Right before the break, we started to talk about ways that we can give attention in in much better ways and pay attention. Mohr and you mentioned turning off our tech gadgets. What? What else? How else should we be bestowing the attention that is so much needed by the people we work with and live with? Well, certainly one way and a unique way. That’s not very usual is to ask them. Ask somebody what kind of attention would you like from me? And i could bet that they don’t even know. So the next sentence that you would share with them would be. You may not know right now what kind of attention you want from me. But when you figure it out, please call me. Please let me know. So i can either give it to you. Are we can talk about it? Are it would make good conversation. So you think in a professional relationship that’s ah, that’s a fair question to ask now, this is let’s say boss and employee and the employees i guess asking the boss what what kind of attention do you need from me? Absolutely. Yes. First of all, it makes the employees feel visible that the boss really cares about her or him, and it opens up a whole world of communication. Absolutely. Alice, we have a caller. I know that i’ve turned a with my computers so that i’m giving her one hundred percent of my attention. Thank you. Also, i grieve with what you’re saying, and i tried to do that. That has to keep paying attention to someone when you’re when you’re talking to someone who just talks in circles, who never gets to the point. And it just gets so frustrating. And so i find that when that happens, my mind i just i go where had all focus those difficult, sort of, maybe frustrating, even moments when someone isn’t getting to the point. Alice so what do we do, what we do in that situation? First of all, how do you feel when that happens? Barber to you, that’s important to realize how do you know? When i’m not getting to the point. Yeah, well, you’re feeling frustrated, right? Okay, well, probably one thing you could certainly say to the person is i don’t think you’ve heard what i said because i’m feeling very frustrated about something right now. That’s a direct communication. Okay, are you going to say that? Well, i’m sorry to hear that. I know they would have had to see that that’s a good thing to say, oh, good are i need you to repeat back what i’ve just said to you so that i know that you got it because it’s really important, alice is clearly all about open communication that sounds like the advice that you’re giving not to be afraid to sort of, i guess, obviously politely but firmly asked for more ask for the attention you’re seeking. And in the case of barbra’s question, i asked for affirmation of what it is that you’re looking for are acknowledging tony closed. Communication doesn’t work, so you have to have open communication, but you have to know really what you need and if you need somebody to stop talking in circles, which is so really normal, you need that you have to you have to let them know that they’re really not getting you, and as i said, the way to get the way to alert them to that is to get to never repeat back what you’ve said, barber, does that help you? Eso you’ve mentioned turning off electronic devices? I mean, those air obviously distracting and your point is people feel that distraction asking for attention, asking what type of attention is is being sought. Are there other ways that we can be better at this? Well, once you ask somebody what kind of attention they need and you start a conversation, you’re going to get lots of information. They’re going to tell you what they need and how to give it to them and and and miracles happen. First of all, you’ve got to know that way. Our three different kinds of people, some of us need attention visually, some of us needed auditory lee. Is that a word? Yeah, auditory and another. Some of us need a kinesthetic lee. And when you established in aesthetics is movement correct? Like i’m flailing my arms right now as i’m talking to you, right? Well, you can hear it in people speech. They will either say, you know, i really see what you’re talking about. I hear what you’ve said, i really don’t feel that well, that’s a big clue that comes from really listening when you get that clue, you could address that need in that person and put it in put your conversation in visual terms or auditory terms or kinesthetic terms. You know i’d like to talk about retention that’s a new popular issue right now, it’s not only an issue in in your area, but it’s in the issue that i’m working with now college kids, you know, it usedto only belong in the corporate world. They would talk about retention because people leave. There was a tremendous turnover. Well, college kids are now leaving and trustees air now leaving and i believe firmly cause i hear this from enough people that they leave when they don’t get their needs met and their primary need is for attention. We’ve had a show actually about retaining the good employees that you work so hard to recruit way look to recruit the best not only employees, but also boardmember zand volunteers and it’s difficult for the organisation when there’s a lot of turnover. Um, your point is you think some of the this turnover could be reduced if people would just be more open about what they’re needs are around attention and fulfilling those needs. Toni, i’ve got lots of research in my files showing that employee turnover khun b reduced when employees start to get the kind of attention they are they need, and i’ve worked with a group. The bottom line personal publication corporation had a fight, fabulous experience. It was an experiment. It was called i power. Yes, tell us and they were losing a publication and they had tremendous turnover and stress in their workplace. And they developed this experience where they got their employees to tell them how they felt they could do their job better. There was a process involved in this, but not on ly did employ turnover cease the bottom line went up and and the hundreds of dollars were saved in tiny ways because employees know about waist and they really don’t want to waste their time, nor their owners resource is that it was a miracle. I took that course twice to see if they were doing what i wanted them to do, and they were fabulous story. Fabulous. This reminds me two of something that was in the is in the news very recently, there’s ah ah, university, harrisburg university of science and technology they’ve decided that for one week they were going to turn off access to all social media to the students, so there would be no text messaging, no facebook access um, no twitter access for a solid week and these air all the sorts of distracters that you’re talking about and what happened? No, they haven’t done it yet, it’s coming and i do it. I would like to know what they’re going to do. I mean, how it turns out, you know, there was a president of santa monica college when i lived there, who decreed that for one hour just one hour. Ah, weak. His staff and his service. People would do nothing but read that’s. What he proclaimed and the whole campus changed. People were starting to talk to each other again. The gardeners were talking to the only students because everybody want to know what the other person was reading. The point is, we need that in our lives. We need a turnoff. We need to start looking at people and paying attention. You know, i just moved to new york from los angeles, where i spent my life in a car isolated the difference. And living here is so overwhelming because i take the bus is i take the subways and i look at people and i talked to people. People are people. People are people all over, and they want to be talked to. They want to be looked at. They want to get directions if they look like they’re lost. I stopped. I stopped a couple of the other day in grand central station because the man was taking a photograph of his wife and i said to him, how would you like me to take a picture of both of you and this guy? Smiled from air to hear he couldn’t believe it. A small gesture you and i met on the subway. We met on the atria. We did did that’s how we met on the time we got to know each other. If someone has a difficult relationship with let’s, say a boardmember because that’s those can be sometimes the most the most excruciating. Ah, they where should they really start to try toe engage the person mohr or teo sort of hell the relationship. Well, i think if you really know that the relationship is out or not working, you ask him out for lunch and you say, you know, i’d like to talk to you about a few things and that’s when you could say, you know, i get that there’s not a lot of attention around here. What kind would you like? Are we are we scheduling meetings at the wrong time? Are you being harassed by my staff? Are you getting too many e mails? But, you know, over food, some wonderful things happen, and generally a person when you’re eating with them will be more comfortable and feels safer. Ah, and you can ask him, of course. If this is a good time to talk about what’s going on that the non-profit you’ve gotta enroll, people, enroll in and engage in roland, engage us, ask permission permission for what i ask permission to talk to him about what’s going on at the non-profit that is attention. I happen to like your idea of sharing a meal with someone it’s, it’s, it’s, a physical, sharing your sharing a physical space, the table. I also like that meals in a restaurant are timed. We know the flow exactly. They’re also aren’t going to be the office interruptions because you’re out of the office and adhering to your advice, you’ve turned off your cell phone. You want to be attentive to this person? So you have you’ve eliminated distractions, hopefully, and then there’s the physical level, the physical but the sharing of a meal and be sure you pick up the bill don’t let him i want to give you another example that occurred in one of my workshops. Ah woman’s boss would call her in for a meeting, and either he was on the phone or on his computer or texting or something, and the meetings were generally disasters. Because he would give her moments. And she said, what could i do? And i said, next time you see him in the hall say, could i have seven minutes of your time with no interruption? You know, if somebody hears is a beginning in the end, they can handle that. And so they set aside a seven minute time and went in, and they had the meeting with no interruptions. And he was the one at the end of the meeting. Who said, you know, this has been the best meeting we’ve ever had in just a brief period. Yes, and she was she was elated because when she walked out of his office before she felt deflated, depressed, un respected and a review nails particularly invisible, which is a terrible place to be and they were able to turn it around in just a seven minute meeting. That’s, right without interruption. You doing a five minute meeting? Alison? Just a minute. We have left. This also gets me thinking about two types of people. Are you actually think of the movie pulp fiction? The scene with uma thurman and and john travolta? Are you the kind of person? Who listens or either kind of person who waits to talk good question. There are both in our land and i’ve been guilty of both. So i am particularly joining the first group where i listen until the people are really done. And you know, tony, i’ve had people say to me, you know, you’re really a good lister, so i know that it’s happening for them. Well, john travolta would admire you because he answers that he’s the kind of person who waits to talk, but he says he’s working on it, alice, we have to leave it there. Just for a moment, i’d like to spend a little time thinking about sharing, sharing your miss misfortunes, shortcomings failures. I’m seeing mohr of this among non-profits for a long, long time that has just been taboo, no donor wanted to be affiliated with a project or a program that wasn’t a smashing success, so everything that fell short of that we just kept silent about you may remember a couple of weeks ago i had stephanie strong, the national non-profit reporter for the new york times on, and we talked about her her coverage of failure fair, which was something sponsored by the world bank, no less, and she and i talked about how this longstanding pattern of not talking about shortcomings is slowly changing, and they were sort of seeing examples. And since that show, i’ve seen a couple of examples a pretty well regarded charity in terms of accountability and openness. Charity water shared a video where they we’re very open. The ceo was very open about a water drilling failure in in south african republic. And that was no less than their fourth anniversary. Video was the fourth anniversary of the charity, and they were sharing, ah, shortcoming, a project that did not go so well. And also, very recently, the ceo of the case foundation blogged about projects that don’t go aswell, as the business plan would often like. So i’m starting to see some examples of this. I blogged about it at m p, g a d v dot com, a very recent block post. But i’m just encouraging you to think about how. Failures and shortcomings don’t have to be abject failures, but can be turned around and shared with donors in a way that is productive not only for your non-profit but also for the non-profit community generally and importantly, is then accompanied by a very sensible plan for what to do next, and that actually has brought out in that in that case, foundation blogged post, and you’ll find links to all those on my blogged at mpg geever dot com. I’m joined now by scott koegler scott is the show’s technology expert and he’s, the editor of non-profit technology news. Scott, welcome back. Hi, tony. Thanks. Thanks for inviting me it. Nice to be here. Pleasure to have you back. We’re going to talk about fund-raising software. You’ve done some very recent reviews. Tell us what’s current in fund-raising software. Um, when we did recently, i think it was two weeks ago we put up a a list of different, uh, software products that are available specifically for fund-raising. And i think, uh, i think i’d like to start out with how do you go about making a selection? Yeah. How does an organization decide? What’s right for them, right? Because the reviews that we put up go from the very smallest, almost a single user organization up to multi use yourself, there’s a lot of variation in styles, types and costs, of course, and i kind of suggested three different criteria. When you go to look for software, the first one really is budget. You need to have some kind of money pretty much every one of these applications costs something a lot of them have three trials, but they really won’t get you very far. They need to find what kind of the budget you have that you might be able to spend on on a local application like this for a smaller organizations got that includes even if your budget is just in the several hundreds or even low thousands, you still can. You still can get some traction with this software. Certainly i there’s some that’s starting on the two hundred dollars, so they’re accessible teo, almost any size organization, but i still recommend starting with a budget for any size organization, even if you’re huge and what after budget, the second one would be help. That kind of the the makeup of the organization is everyone in the same place you’d be working in office is everybody coming to the same location? Or do you have people that work remotely? And that will kind of define a type of software that you’re looking for? Last time i was on, we talked a lot about haserot service, yes, and just to remind people that was the july sixteenth show. If you want to listen to got night, talking about software is a service. Sorry, scott, please go ahead. And so if you’re if you’re in one office, you’ve got some got all kinds of options there because you khun install the software on a pcr on a server in the office, and generally all of these applications can be used by multiple people, same time as long as there’s a network involved. But if there are people that are remotely located or working home, or even work with a smartphone, they get maximum ex accessibility through applications were there installed online. We’re sas suffers the service or hosted kinds of applications, which can be applied for people that all work in the same office just as easily. The only requirement there is that it that somehow you have an internet connection. So that that’s really the criteria? The stand alone? If you’re in one office, you definitely want to be ableto know that you can net workflows and it’s not just a single user application. Unless you’re very, very small with a one person staff and and scott, could you just distinguish for us? Ah, a couple of different installation methodologies, i guess there’s, the local network multi user and the sas local you described is that’s just installed on a pc what’s the difference between network and multi user, uh, good point and it’s also a very fine point. Networking implies the use of the server. So there’s, generally a server installed somewhere in the office. Servers generally run server operating systems like microsoft server or some kind of winnicks server. And soccer is installed there, and it is connected over the network to individual pc water stations. Multi user is just a bit different and it gets confusing and sometimes the definitions overlap. But multi user means that multiple people can use the same application doesn’t necessarily imply that that application’s installed on their server. It could just be installed on a pc that is connected to other pieces. Through a network in the office, i see and then you don’t have the the security concerns and even the physical cooling concerns that you have around server. I wouldn’t say that there are no security concerns because anytime anything is shared, their their security concerns, ok? And i think it’s pretty much a given anymore that any office is going to have internet access, and as soon as you open up that connection to the internet, then you have security concerns. But most applications today do a pretty good job off keeping the data safe, and there are plenty of security applications that air either low cost or no cost that could be installed on individual work stations or servers that will keep the bad guys away or at least make it very difficult for him to get in. I’m talking to scott koegler, the show’s technology expert scott’s, the editor of non-profit technology news, which you’ll find at n p tech news. Dot com scott let’s dive in and talk about some of the individual products that you’ve reviewed recently at non-profit technology news? Sure, and i’ll just say also that the products that i’m going to talk about here are written up in a article on the site, so if people want more detail on that, you can certainly go there. I’ll talk about the kind of start with the lower end there’s one called fundraiser basic software and again for the lynx, and this should go to the site, get the links. Uh, this is a single database system. It’s good for the fifty thousand donors, and that may be a lot that may not be enough for you, but that’s kind of a maximum for this type of application. It is multi user. But as i said, multiuse er means that it’s installed on a single on a single workstation and accessed over a network. Those who make it bad or good. It just means that it’s, not a server based installation. One of the things that fund-raising basic has is a pretty good mailing capability. So you can take your the donor list and they’ve made it out into different segments and then send me now out from there. And that’s, certainly one of the most basic and sometimes most important things that fund-raising organization could do. And you said we were starting at the low end? What are the startup costs for getting into fundraiser? Basic. The cost for the product is about two hundred dollars. Oh, my gosh, yeah, so that puts it within reach of i wouldn’t say anybody that certainly a lot of folks, so for two hundred dollars on organization can have ah, good features for up to fifty thousand donors, right? And its multi user, which is i mean, you could have i don’t know exactly what the limitations in terms of numbers of users, but i would say, you know, if it could go to ten that’s, probably more than most small organizations were made, and are there ongoing costs after the two hundred dollars initial purchase? With any of these applications, there typically annual subscription fees for maintenance and updates the in general, those he’s run about ten percent of the original purchase cost? I have to tell you that i don’t really know what the specific costs for fund-raising basic is in terms of ongoing costs, but if it’s twenty dollars, a year or even one hundred dollars a year that’s probably a bargain. No kidding. And does that fee typically include support if there are questions? Or is that usually just found online? I had a support work. I believe they offer female support rather than phone support than the support options there. I believe that they do have additional support options, but those with the extra cost. Okay? And that product again is called fundraiser basic. Is that right? That’s? Correct. All right. And what was another one you’d like to share with us? There’s one called a raise. A r a fast fund? No, the whole raise fast. Fund-raising non-profit fund-raising software. A long name. Okay, but they’ll find the link on your website. It and p tech news. Dot com. Right? Correct. Okay. When? When we just call it a raise on rachel is a good name for thank you. What do you want to tell us about a raise? Well, it’s it’s a little bit more expensive than fund-raising basic it’s. Three hundred dollars. But i would call that still in the bargain basement? Yes. No, it allows you to do batch entry of data. So if you have your list of donors already available, you can upload that into the system rather than enter them one at a time. And that that’s important to you. You know, if you’re coming from you have any kind of history at all. It gets pretty tedious. Tryingto enter name. Do you know? Would that include batch entry from an excel spreadsheet? Do you know? I believe it excel spreadsheets or asking files another. And you, khun generally export in asking spreadsheet as a text file. Okay, what? What is what is asking jargon jail when we have a jogging jail time? Probably that’s. Okay, i’ll catch you on the ward in the jordan job. Now that the warden what’s the jailer. A warden? Yeah, the warden in charge in jail. What’s, the asking me and scott asking is, um, i’m not going to even give you the the acronyms. Title letters, it’s, text basically something that you can read and as a text document rather than excel, which if you if you have xl that’s great. You can open your file on x. L see it. You don’t have xl. What you have is a file that is in some kind of computer language that is easily readable. Okay, so ah, word file is an asking file and no it’s, not it. Is in a sense. Yes. Okay, but it’s, what? You see when you open a word document text. Okay? And the point is you khun batch upload these files to a raise. That’s correct. Okay, so if you’re working on something that’s not dedicated to fund-raising at all like an excel spreadsheet you can you can upload easily waiting. Just a minute. We have left before the break. What do you what? What other features of ray’s should our listeners know about? It has a has a large capacity database. I think it goes even above the fifty thousand that we were talking about. So if if you if you’re small and you have a user base that is greater than fifty thousand, they want to look at the rays rather than fund-raising basic. But i will say that it’s still in that arena? Yeah, the sound ideal perfectly suited for small and midsize non-profits e-giving just one more before the break. It’s called scott i’ve gotta hold you off. Actually, what i’d like to do is talk about filosa exceed, which is kind of the next step up. Okay? Please, just say that. Say the name of the product again. Well, it’s still osa teo s a. Excuse me. All right, thanks. Please. What? What do you want to share? It’s basic fund-raising and donor management. It’s? Uh, it’s actually a smaller version of what telos a produces on a larger scale. So what? Just saying that what that means is that if you’re a growing organization tolosa exceed get you in at the basics. And again, basics is about five hundred dollars. So it’s a little bit it’s another step up from the fundraiser basic and from the res, but we’re still so much we’re so far below a thousand dollars even. Absolutely, sir. Three great products for the most expensive of the three is five hundred dollars. Okay, i’m sorry. I’m excited. No that’s. Good that i and i think that there are some things to be excited about. Here for organizations that have been struggling with excel spreadsheets and word documents and trying to manage email emerges using outlook and word. These things really offer a great way to get past that. One of the things that exceed does is it provides drill down reports and reports are pretty interesting. You know what you want to know, obviously is how is my fund-raising effort going? Who’s donating what what are the demographics of the people that are donating most? And how can i reach them better? So you want to be able to run reports that that show you in some kind of order, you can sort them in the however you like, but let’s say from most donation to least yeah, a drill down function allows you to take a look at an item that says donations of one thousand dollars, for instance, and you click that item and then it it opens up another window that shows you will hear all the donors that donated a one thousand dollar level, and from there you can draw farther. And so it gives you greater detail every time you drill into a particular item. So it sounds like the reporting is more robust on tele succeed than ah, a raise or fundraiser. Basic right. And i think that’s, a product of the fact that this is again a scaled down version of their big product. Most big products will have these kind of capabilities. And so the littlest has decided that they’ll include this advanced capability in their basic products. And is there go ahead, please? Another thing that they have with this is i just talked about the email function and urging they haven’t advanced email management capability allows you to to emerge pretty much the description, and i just said, take a lister segment of your donor’s based on their contribution level and send on ly them a specific level, a specific letter with specific information in it, and send a different email to a different set of donors, and this is all managed from within the within the program all within the program, right? Yeah, outstanding. Is there another one that you want to share with us? Sure, i just make one more point about told police that is, if you’re if you’re doing reporting, which becomes no more important, as as you’re not proper clothes, tell osa also has a data export to quickbooks, so that gives you a direct connection without having to do manual entry. Yes, and your finance, your financial officer will appreciate that very much right, and the board of directors to and theorem whatever that comes to bear the next one here does actually hit the one thousand dollar level on that is fun. Easy, that’s sweaters, fund-raising software, it’s, right in two thousand dollar mark. It has multiple modules, so this one is really available on a modular level, so you can actually define your own pricing based on the number of modules that you you take or that you need. And you know, not every organization needs every module, so you can customize it, and it also allows you to grow your capabilities as your needs grow. Scott, we have to leave it there. Welcome back to tony martignetti non-profit radio big non-profit ideas for the other ninety five percent, i’m your host, the aptly named host tony martignetti my first guest today is regina walton. Regina is principal of organic social media. Reggina’s joining us by phone. Welcome regina, how are you? Well, how are you? I’m well too, thanks. Welcome to the show. We’re talking about social media for small and medium non-profits what? Let’s let’s first just define the space. What how do you define social media? Well, many different things there lots of moving parts right now, which i guess you know can be overwhelming if you’re not familiar with it. But the things that i think most people have heard about our sites like facebook and twitter, i would include other things like, you know, forms where people communicate with each other on usually forms or targeted based on topic or sometimes demographics are things with that that also email, i think although email at this point is around twenty years old, i think that it’s part of it because it can lead people to those sites. Okay, interesting. You mentioned something i’d like to look into it can be overwhelming. I have experienced with clients that it’s so overwhelming that they leads teo paralysis. They don’t know how to start so they don’t start, right? Do you have before we start talking about the different strategies? Do you have some advice for organizations that just may feel paralyzed? Well, i think probably the smartest thing then is to find an expert right on dh that doesn’t necessarily mean someone like me, because people do hate me to do it, but maybe you have and you probably do. You have someone in your organization who is on facebook who is on twitter? I’m not saying that they’re experts, but i’m saying that they have at least gotten over a certain level of phobia, right? Um and that maybe, you know, you can use them, you know, to kind of get you started are many b hey, who knows? Maybe they will end up being the community manager of your non-profit, you know, because you know, it might be some untapped potential there with someone, but at least, you know, try to find somebody who is already in the treyz ondas already, you know, already comfortable, comfortable because a lot. Of it is googling a lot of it is finding information. This is all very new that we’re all learning. I mean, even the even the experts are still learning, right? I mean, sites pop up every day. There’s, there’s, there’s, constant learning for you. Yeah, that’s the thing i mean and i was going to say it, people are like, oh, you’re you’re an expert or you’re you know, you should call yourself this through that on dh ii has been paid to do that simply just because it’s a constant elearning process there are articles, blobs and guides being written almost daily and it’s just so much information. So i would just say that i’m someone who keeps her finger on the pulse of what’s going on you mentioned. Alright, you mentioned email as ah as a social networking strategy. So since that is what everyone by now is comfortable with you do you have a couple of ideas that someone who’s maybe, starting on email campaign of some type could i should start with? Well, i just i meant an email from the perspective of if you just look at, you know, marketing research in terms of value, you know, email is very valuable because that person is explicitly giving you permission, you know, to market to them are to send them messages on dh so and that from that perspective, there’s just, you know, ah, high high value of return. So i would say that in a social media strategy, you ultimately want to build in a system where you have an op in email system, you might not have won initially. Ah, but those people are going to be valuable to you because, you know, they are, at least at some level vested enough where they said, ok, you can send stuff to my email box and that’s valuable that’s a lot more valuable than say, you know, someone on twitter, not that twitter is not valuable, a different kind of value, but just, you know, in terms of sheer marketing numbers, the value of an email customers, more so what can you dio? Maybe if you build a facebook page for your non-profit then, you know, maybe set up something where you have a newsletter or something on and, you know, you asked people are often for that. Andi, if they do that, you know they’re they’re asking they’re basically consenting to getting more another advantage to email is that, you know, the person has received it, they may not necessarily open it, but well, they you know, they have seen it, right? Yeah, well, i mean, i would just say the value is the fact that this person, you know, has giving you their email information on dh, that, you know, you’re going to get to deliver them something straight to their inbox that they’re going to look at in the morning or in the evening on dh yeah, they may or may not open it, and i have to let that sometimes i will opt into a loose on dh, then i’ll take myself off because then i find that well, maybe i’m not as interested as i thought it was or, you know, i always feeling like they’re kind of abusing the process, you know? So don’t overdo it if you get someone’s email because they will opt out. And what about some some goals for around email? What what might small organization hope to achieve by starting on email awareness or ah friendraising or even fund-raising campaign? Well, i mean one example, and i’m actually just referring to something that’s going on right now on social media there’s a website that is conducting, like a contest of measure who’s, the most influential person. Well, there’s like kind of an activist non-profit booth that raises, you know, fundez just go khun dej for people, and they’ve decided they’re gonna hijack the project and turn it into something good because, you know, they’re the objective of what they do on days ago, they sent out a thing and message, people saying, we’re going to hijack this project read up this is what we do. Andi, i literally got an email yesterday saying, ok, this has started on and, you know, so go onto twitter and update your status and go on to facebook and do this, so i would say that maybe one goal is actually, you know, get people engaged, you know what called action i find that i get from non-profits quite a bit in my email, um, you know, one political one or you know fund-raising one, but i find that a lot of non-profits music back how successful that is, i don’t know i’m not working on that. Side of it, but just as somebody who was kind of in the safe and get those emails that’s when i see a lot of things happening, is that non-profit will use them to get people tio take a stand or, you know, to react to do something. And you mentioned using email in that example to send people elsewhere toe facebook, twitter so why don’t we start to movinto into those areas on you? Also mentioned earlier, the facebook fan page? What is that? What does it take to start one? Oh my god, what is it? What it was just the first are easy, they already zito set up okay there, maybe let me qualify that they’re easy for someone who’s, comfortable with the platform to set up, it doesn’t take much at all. Um, the only thing i’m just going to say as a caveat is that let’s say, you know you’re a non-profit it’s a small organization, you want to make sure that the facebook page for the organization is tied to the person like tied to the president or the person who is in charge? Because example, if i’m your intern and then you let me build that page on my profile. You know, eight minutes. Time for me to go back to school. The profile is permanently tied to my account. That’s. Something that cannot be changed later. Can i cannot be changed right now. Maybe fate, maybe it’s gonna happen that, you know, so many people in this state that facebook is goingto have to build it in. Well, it doesn’t exist. We can transfer it. But as it stands right now, that account will not move. It stays on the account it was started on. So, you know, give your intern temporary access. You know, you can always change your password, you know, or whatever, but and have them set up the page on your account, and then you go in or they go in because they’re already in your account and make themselves an admin and administrator of that account. And then they can do it from their camp. But make sure that it’s anchored, you know, into, you know, with ceo account burrito, whoever is in charge so that’s just caveat. So what that face? That rampages are pretty easy to set up. Um, they’re the level of sophistication, though. Is getting pretty high and people’s expectations they’re getting pretty high, so that means if you have things like logos, um and things that can brand you non-profit used them. Andi that’s, you dragon image files and things like that there’s a special language and things that you confined. But this is the thing. It sounds overwhelming. Trust me, you can go on google and type in something like facebook. You know how to build a facebook sam page and you will get tons and tons and tons of resource is from very good sources on how to do it now, it’s goingto take you more time and you’re gonna have to still learn. But the information is out there and that’s kind of the fun thing about you’re listening to tony martignetti non-profit radio my guest is regina walton principle of organic social media. My guest is regina walton on dh. We’re talking about social media, regina is the principle of organic social media. Regina we were just talking about the facebook fan page. It sounds like that is a fairly simple and on a, uh, easily done place for a non-profit to start great you think so? Yes, i’m sorry. I mean, that was a high pitched kind of i’m yes, maybe i should say that because facebook does have, you know, fifty million people so there’s a really high chance that, you know, your core audience is definitely definitely on facebook. However, um, bigger might not necessarily be better and preparation preparing for this, i put down a list and, like an example is, you know, maybe it would be better to pick a form where there are people who deal directly with what your cause is like example, there was a there was a shelter or woman shelter regina, before you, before you launch into the example, just explain what? What you mean by forms. Well, i mean, basically, what i mean is it’s, an online space where they said earlier people congregate based on interest are based on demographics or, like example, if you like knitting, you can probably go online. I know i could go online right now and find a form that is dedicated and probably in detail you would never have imagined, but they talk about knitting on dh. They talk about all kind of little side issues that come up with knitting. And so that’s what? I mean, these air specialized space is online that deal with people’s interest and they can talk about thank you. And i thought you said form fo r m my mistake. You’re talking about online forums, forums. Okay. Thank you. Yeah, you had an example of the forum. Well, yeah, so like example there. Is there not a shelter that we’re looking? Tio have people help them. Jazz up the shelter’s for abused women are women who just needed a place to be a safe place. And so what they did was they specifically targeted, um, a form a martha stewart form, right? These were women, mostly who are very interested in, you know, jazzing up their home environments and making things pretty. So this is kind of an ideal group of people to target, and they did, and they got a lot of people to contribute help them, you know, beautify these spaces. So, yeah, i’m sure that maybe they could have found, like, you know, the martha stewart fan page, um, on facebook and try to engage people there or build a facebook page, but, you know, maybe sometimes it’s better part to be targeted and what you do, and and that all comes down to research, so i would say before any non-profit does anything you know, take the time to think about what your goals are as a non-profit and what you want to dio onda social media because there’s so much you can do maybe targeting would help. And what about using online communities for for listening about what’s going on in your space? I mean, you’re using you’re giving us a great example of raising awareness and even volunteer recruitment on you even mentioned fund-raising in that in that example of the of the shelter, what about a non-profit using these communities? Just tow, listen to what’s going on in their in their work space in their in their sort of service community. Well, that’s key. Andi, i think that that comes down to doing research. You can build a thing called google alert. Um, and specifically, google will email you any time and every time, something along whatever that term is. So you get a google alert on a term or a phrase? Yeah, andi so you can build google alert on to do that with someone just started. Google, google dot com. You just started google dot com. Usually, google tries to be pretty intuitive. Andi, i actually believe it’s something like alert google dot com or www google that com flash back flasher are ford flash alert. Excellent. Okay, thanks. Something like that. And and in general, google tends to be very intuitive regarding that kind of stuff. So even if you type in alerts and it’s something else, usually something will pop up saying, do you mean this? Um so, you know, you can start by doing research. Yeah. Researching on maybe definitely your own non-profit you should definitely be getting google. You should definitely build the google alert with the name of your non-profit actually know that if people are talking about you, you know it and maybe also maybe also the executive director, key volunteers, i mean, these airways of researching your organization and the research answers air coming right to your e mail. Yeah, trust me, i haven’t even got a google alert about me. I want to know when my name comes up and when people are talking about me on dh that’s pretty standard these days amongst brovey becky, um, you know, but also you want to find out you might have, you might have some fans out there depending on what you’ve done in the community. So there might be people who have, you know, unofficial profiles are who were just enthusiastic supporters of what you do, you know, try to find them on dh when you start building your on online presence, engaged them. Oh, hey, you know, i ran the google search and i found this post or something. Andi, i just wanted to let you know we’re building up this book fans, you know, they built a facebook fan page, so come on over. Um, durney and if that person is already in your corner right then he or she is definitely going to spread the word on dh that actually leaves me tio another side of it, which is you can’t really control, um, the internet, you might get people saying that things about you, then it comes to, you know, make take the time, tio think about, you know, maybe what you do in terms of damage control think about this in advance also. Ugh, i’m example, haiti, um, someone i know was helping a famous individual with his social media, and he got into a little bit of scandal. I’m not a little bit quite a bit on dh i was talking to the guy who was helping him, and it was this one of those things were eventually, you know, it came into, you know, just being transferred parent and damage control and dealing with it, and that seemed to kind of have it all calmed down, but you can’t be scared that people might say bad things about you. They’re carting internet trolls and it’s better to know and, you know, and sometimes people will go too far, but things like, if you know the facebook page, you know you might want to make it very explicit that, you know, we don’t tolerate abusive language here, you know? We reserve the right to delete thomas for things like that, but you be ready, but it’s it’s better it’s better for the organization to know that there is negative stuff out their way. They’re almost always gonna be some naysayers out there and be ready for them so you can use the google alert stuff to find out. Yeah, good alert, it comes up to deal with that on dh, then move on, you know, because usually what happens is, you know, they say you get sucked down really fast that they’re just kind of regina, just in the in the minute or so that we have left. What about using social media these on the online communities for non-profits to network with other non-profits i think that’s something that isn’t often photos there’s actually a non-profit that i found a really good story on basically they deal with paraplegics who happened injured and so sport accident and what this group it was online, they connected with another non-profit so the name of the non-profits life world on and they connect. It with chris and re foundation on dh they have, you know, they have similar objectives, andi so between those two groups it’s just a really easy flow of communication and the people that are vested in their cause, you know, kind of by default are vested in the cause of this other non-profit and it just kind of help to expand the base of boat. And how do you how do you get started? How do you find other non-profits that air working in your space in just the thirty seconds or so that we have left? I would say it comes down to monitoring that’s where the google searching is really going to start pulling up all this activity started getting tweets coming in thanks for my website, all that’s going to come up and that’s all searchable and that’s all those air, all being searched, i guess, by the google alerts that you were talking about, yeah, but also going in and physically googling yourself, you know, go into google and try some different terms because sometimes, you know your first choice but necessarily work, and so then you have to kind of getting a bit more. Precise, sir, changed the terms of that. Go in and play around with google it’s, okay to get some bad results, because then you’ll learn how to do that anymore. I’m tony martignetti and you’re listening to tony martignetti non-profit radio in a moment, i’ll be joined by john melkis, and we’ll talk about using online communities for fund-raising in the next moment, i want to spend just reminding you that if you are planning fall events for your organization, september and october, i think tend to be pretty common months for social events of different types fund-raising events because people have largely taking the summer off if you’re planning an event like that, those events are solicitations, and those solicitations trigger the requirement to register with st charity officials in the state where you’re hosting that event so that event might be in your home state might be in your office or maybe in a major donors home or a board member’s home that may very well be in your home state, and hopefully you’re registered in the state where you’re doing the most business with st charity officials. But if you’re hosting an event and in some other state, you need to be registered with the state charity officials before you host that event because, as i said, that event is a solicitation and solicitation is what triggers. The charity registration requirements throughout the states, as i’ve said in previous shows, there are lots of other things that trigger these requirements. Email, paper, mail buying advertising space in a lot of states having a donate now button if you have ah live donate now button on your website and that’s visible obviously throughout the world in twenty ah, more than twenty states that’s a charity solicitation because the donate now button is visible buy-in those twenty states and it doesn’t matter whether someone gives through the donate. Now button, i’m not talking about donations coming through your website. I’m talking about the website, just accepting merely act accepting online gift that also is a solicitation. But if you’re planning these fall events, it took the summer off. If you have events coming up, you should register with st charity officials before you host those events. I am very interested in this topic so much so that i wrote a book about it. The book is charity registration state by state guidelines for compliance, and you’ll find the book at st charity registration dot com. My guest now is john melkis. John welcome buy-in tony let’s talk about fund-raising using online communities, my my last guest was talking about getting started in online communities. How is the online community space valuable for fund-raising sure we actually call this type of fund-raising people two people fund-raising and for non-profit there’s multiple ways, of course, to raise money, some of the traditional ways would be to do a direct mail asked for large checks from big donors, government grants, etcetera, but a new way that people are raising money are through social networks and the people to people phenomena means the non-profits are not directly soliciting donations. They are actually encouraging people who care about the organisation. It could be evolved here, it could be someone who’s close to the organization. It could be someone who cares about the cause for them to ask their friends directly to support the cause they care about the non-profit company is the non-profit the non-profit is not soliciting it’s, someone who is someone who loves the non-profit act quickly so the people to people part, our friends asking there colleagues, their relatives of their friends to support a cause. They care about what about sort of message control if we’re going to let air constituents who admittedly love us but might not describe us ah, charity in the way that we most like to be described, that’s, that’s going to be a concern? Oh, sure, and that comes up a lot. I will say we’ve been doing this for two years now, since since two thousand eight we used to get that question more often, but less and less now, and the trade office and i think i heard a little bit from the last conversation that there is a tradeoff you do some of that control. The simple answer is the people to people aspect the social media aspect of this equation, which is user generated content, meaning people are creating creating two e mails they’re creating the the request are more persuasive than the kind of official marketing request, so i guess the way i would look at it is if you look at the popularity of a site like you to a lot of the videos on youtube or not professionally made marketing, people may cringe to think what, that some of those videos, but they’re very, very popular, and they’re very viral, so and kind of trade off a little less control. It’s not polished it’s definitely more informal, but marika and those messages, you’re often very viral. Yeah, some of the most viral videos are the ones that have what? What critics would say low production values, homegrown i’m thinking of some that come from from the military doing dances or the or the guy who dances throughout the world in different countries, in very low production, but but millions and millions of hits you’re absolutely right and this term that people use all the time called social media and it’s not always defined people just kind of talk about it as this big trend and phenomenon, but it just means user generated and you’re right, it’s not a professional, but it’s very, very popular social media, social networking. Your sight is karma for one one, and people will find that it karma for one one dot com why don’t you tell us what karma for one one is doing in promoting the people the people fund-raising sure on if you just take a quick step and we talk about social media and social. Networking in general there’s two there’s two kind of core of activities going on here. The first one is, as i was saying, social media, so content that’s generated by individuals is very popular, very persuasive and it’s very viral. So that’s just kind of as a trend. Youtube is a certainly a big example of that. But then social networking, which, of course, facebook is the big example is the same idea. Of course, it’s all user generated content you get one of the most popular web sites in the world. Facebook and no content is being written by someone on facebook, it’s, all written by mothers and high school kids and college kids, etcetera. So the reason why it’s so popular? First of all, the social media so it’s people sharing their own stories and messages with their friends? But it’s a great way to communicate. And even now, of course, it’s a good way to communicate, but she couldn’t hear even hell with all of the tools that the social networking sites like facebook and others offer. So it it’s absolutely terrific way to communicate and the way we look at the world that karma fall on. One looks at the world is you use these tools these social networking elements for different tasks in your life, most of it right now is around buy-in facebook is fun. Check out photos of your friends, kids catch up with friends from high school, etcetera, but it’s kind of addressing in need of just that basic end of day at work. Just relax and kind of see what’s going on with your friends so it’s for fun and then linked into him along and said, you know, this is a great way to connect and communicate and interact with people, but what about business needs? So you’re looking for a job you’re trying to communicate your resume, you know that type of thing and our view is x ray two so fundez covered and business and kind of searching for a job is covered. What about causes? So you care about it because you want to support it cause it’s the same idea you need tools to communicate, to share your ideas and provide a platform to support social media. So that’s where car before one one fix and where wei have similar tools to those other sites, but we focus on causes. Why did it decline in popularity? Yeah, it’s interesting, innit? And reborn itself a little bit, but i had this really nice picture that i used to use for discussions on social networking, and it had three pictures, one for my space, one for facebook and one for lengthen the one for facebook had kind of a nice, clean cut college student type person just very nicely dressed and, uh, you know, nicely put together something you want to talk to the length in person, of course had a suit on and was a little more professional, but the myspace person was carrying a nice a little dangerous, and that was the problem with facebook was you’re saying before important, teo kind of be more informal and let people create their content, but at the same time it needs tio you need to make sure that it doesn’t go overboard and the problem with people who are not being honest, the people were not representing themselves correctly. So maybe they took some of the potential downside that you were asking me about in the beginning and took it too far. And what one thing just to learn from this is that it’s always an issue and people do worry about it. But big picture when you try to figure out on my own and i fall this message with so many content so much content, so many updates. So much networking going on. Can anyone really control it? And on the one hand know you as a company. You can’t control every element. You could monitor it and do alerts, etcetera. But at the same time i really think that the community people understand when people go overboard and there is within reason a kind of a self policing. And i do believe that’s what happened? What myspace? The community said this is not where we want to go. This is not what social networking is supposed to do. And there was no government agency that came in. There was no police force that came in. There was no external force. It was just a community itself said, this is not what we want, so it doesn’t happen a cz quickly as arresting someone, for example, but big picture i really do think these pro social type proclivities will will win out, and that so we certainly hope for carmen four one one so it gave new meaning to crowd control. It was really the crowd acting as the police and moving away. You mentioned that my space was reborn just in the forty five seconds or so that we have before the break. How did my space have a rebirth? Yeah, uh, it’s a good question, because someone made tracks their head and say, i won’t be one mother of all social network where everyone goes and everyone uses for everything, and that has not happened whether it’s in a good way, really in any space, even if you look a email, which is so commoditized you haven’t. In boxing, send e mails but there’s hot male there’s, g mail, there’s, yahoo! Of course, they’re still outlook from microsoft, so there’s still that kind of individuality. So i don’t believe it will ever be the mother of all social networks and part of it is because people will focus, you go to facebook for fun. As i said before, you would have went inter business. I hope you go to karma for hunt, hunt for causes, and people go to myspace now for music, actually, how they started. My state started as a little area where bands could promote themselves, put up their calendar, upload pictures from their concerts and the fans of those of cages. I would say how much they love their band. Then people said, hey, i don’t have a page, just like my band has a page and that’s how my space started. But like i said, it went a little too far, and now they’re kind of going back to their roots, and they’re focusing on people who are interested in music. John, we have to take a break. Fund-raising yeah, the best way to look at it would be to consider a youtube page when someone upload the video and kind of gives a quick description of it or on facebook. So you have a page with your profile in a little information, the bottom line is you get your own page. So as i was saying before, whoever this person is, who cares about the organization? So could be someone who suffered a disease that the organization support could be a volunteer, another concern, citizen, where it is you, quote unquote, make a page, and on that page you upload your picture to tell your story of why it’s important to you, and then they’re tools to share this message with your friends so they can come and check out your page, just like you might say, hey, check out this video on youtube, but kind of fun and your friends would go to that youtube page it’s the same idea, except on that page two options one you could make a donation, then that’s a key element, and that donation goes to the non-profit oh, our past the word so becomes you tell your friends this is something interesting, you know, this is my friend very connected to this cause. Could you show your support? So so that’s it it’s all as i said, user generated and what you’re seeing on karma for one one. How are the most successful campaigns being run by individuals? You know they’re great because they’re saying before, a lot of times people are familiar mohr with kind of when they’re communicating this way online, maybe they do an email blast, which which can often make sense, but it’s typically a numbers game. Maybe you have an e mail with the ten thousand names, and if you were going to send out an email blast, you would expect a very, very low open raid. Maybe a couple click throughs, you know it could have could have an impact, but it’s quite low number, however, in a campaign like this that i’m describing the people who are sending the invitation. So when i make my page and send it to my friends and colleagues, etcetera, this’s a page on you’re talking about a pain giant, you’re talking about a page on karma for one one right back. Okay, please page on karma for one one, just like you say make a page on youtube. Uh, the response rate is dramatically hyre because you’re getting the email from your friend, you’re it will get through to the inbox if they probably hurting sent e mails to that person before and their request is a lot more persuasive because it’s coming from someone you know, so the response rates are typically very good and donations think back to the obama campaign. They’re not always large gifts. This is not the same is getting a big check from a donor? They range. Sometimes you get a fifty dollar check, it could be a ten dollars take check or credit card divination, but sometimes we do get quite large donations.
