Heather is sitting closest to me and she is the chief operating officer. Your faith family. Karen graham is executive director at idealware. Ladies. Welcome. Thank you. Thanks, it’s. A pleasure to have you both. I’ll be here. Oh, thank you. Your topic for the session is virtual organizations managing remote employees in the leadership track. All right, back-up we need to be a little more open, i guess, to virtual employment opportunities. Is that right? Yes. Yes. We’re finding that there’s more talent out there that you might not be able to tap into if it’s only in your local community on dh just there. So you can open yourself up to the whole world. You can potentially the whole country if you’re willing to do that on dh. However, it’s not an easy thing to do necessarily. And so we’re hoping to give some tips and techniques for people who are managing virtual employees or who are virtual employees themselves. Karen so you think it’s a combination? We’re not doing it as much as we could and those who are not doing it. Maybe you’re not doing it as well as they could, right? I think some organizations are held back by fears of, like some of the ms about remote employees. You know, i won’t be ableto know what this person is doing. They’re going to be folding laundry and eating cupcakes all day, things like that and that. Okay, it’s not always untrue, but almost always. But, you know, most most people are pretty conscientious and very productive at home, and in fact, i think i’m probably more productive when i work from home or away from a group of people than i am when when i’m in the middle of all those interruptions. Okay, heather, you you virtual also, i am not virtual, but i manage virtual employees in eight different cities. Oh, excellent. So we have a manager of a different city employees and someone who works virtually you’re virtually my entire team is virtual okay? Arika, uh is the whole company? Yes. Idealware all right. And that’s a recent change for us. So whereas other has a great deal of experience with this it’s really nufer me. And so for the last year, i’ve been learning what it’s like to convert from almost everybody in a brick and mortar office toe having everyone worked from home offices. So i’m really curious what brought about that change? It started with one person who was remote and then as new staff were hired, we just looked for the best talent wherever we could find it and didn’t worry as much about having everybody in one central location. And so just gradually, we’ve evolved into having people in three different time zones and things spread across the country. Ok, whether it sounds like we need to first get over our own objections to know it’s got to be a local employees, i don’t want to take this on somebody wrote. One of the things that we’re finding is the old culture within some organizations is if i don’t see it happening it’s not happening. Ah, nde. We were that’s embedded in a lot of cultural, a lot of older organizations, and once we get over that and we put in some processes to handle that, people get more and more comfortable. One of the things we’re finding and karen alluded to this also is if you hire the right people, then that idea that i don’t see it it’s not happening and trusting your employees is really key in managing virtual organizations. Where do we, since you’re the manager of a different location, people in a different city? Where do we start with this? Should we start with the hiring process? Cerini so i think what’s, very important, is identifying before you’ve been hyre someone what the skillsets that this person needs, what are their goals going, toby, what is their job going to be? There are definitely some roles that cannot be done, virtually so that it’s, not for everyone, it’s, not for every organization, it’s, not for every position, okay, so identifying where it belongs, okay, can anything you want to add that stage? Not yet, okay. The let’s, let’s. Start with some tips. Okay, wait. We’ve identified what types of people we need, what kinds of skills we need up. Well, actually, i’m taking a step back. What are some things that were sometimes of jobs? Heather, that definitely should not be virtual. You think i think that if you’re a type of person that needs teo, if your role needs to be interacting with people on a regular basis to get something done within an office. So an office manager, um, things that need to have interactions with other people on a regular basis and i don’t know if you come up. I’m talking, karen, if you came across any of this as you all went virtual, but i’m finding that it’s been very difficult to have a virtual employees if their job is to sit down with you and communicate with you on a regular basis and get stuff done enough physical environment. Okay, okay. Gary, i would agree with that and that’s a challenge that technology khun partially solve. But it can be really challenging. Okay. All right, let’s, move it to technology. Will get the tips and, you know we’re playing time together. What are some tools that you find just essential for this? Certain? Here we are at a technology conference, so it makes sense too, really focus on that one of the tools that we use most often at idealware to keep in touch and to sort of simulate the water. Cool the water cooler. Conversations that tend to get lost with a virtual team is chat. And and so we use google maps for our email and calendars and document management and everything. And so it felt natural for us to just use google’s chat tools as well. And we have a channel set up called the virtual break room and there’s usually a little bit of activity on there every single day and people will just post like, oh, it just started snowing outside or my cat is sick. O r, you know, just kind of that casual conversation. That’s not really work related. And yet it’s, so crucial to building a cohesive team and feeling like you really are part of each other’s full lives. How cool is that? Because you have to try to simulate what? What? Being in the office is like you mentioned the water. Cooler tryingto virtually simulate that so that it feels like on office space, another that makes it mine. Yeah, going backwards, you know you’re you kind of have to go backwards in order to make this effective communication is key. What all of the tips, all of the technology, everything you use, it goes back to the ability to create cohesive communication between people who are not physically in the same space. So the same way karen has her virtual water cooler. We use skype for business on a regular basis, and if you want to talk to someone, you’re usually on skype, you click on it, you have a video and you have a quick conversation something that may not necessarily be as effective if you try to do it through email and it probably faster on email has been detrimental somewhere, sometimes to our employees, because they’re just getting hundreds and hundreds of these. And if you want a quick answer, there’s all these other tools like these chat tools that make it a little easier. Okay, okay. Karen, please aren’t our process. That idealware for kind of identifying what technologies we needed to help us as a virtual team really started by looking at what gaps were there that were left by by not being in the same place together. So one of the things that you misses, a lot of nonverbal cues, tio what people are thinking, how they’re reacting to something, and so we use video a lot as well and that’s always our default, what video platform way use google hangouts primarily, but we also have some other, like peskay and other tools that we use for external meetings as well. And so with heather, you know, we actually just met for the first time about five minutes ago, you were in person, yes, but were bent on we’ve been on video chats together several times before, and i feel like we kind of know each other. I knew what she looked like, michael workers know when i get a haircut when i get a new outfit, even though it might be four or five months between seeing each other in person, you’re tuned to non-profit radio tony martignetti also hosts a podcast for the chronicle of philanthropy fund-raising fundamentals is a quick ten minute burst of fund-raising insights published once a month tony’s guests are expert in crowdfunding, mobile giving event fund-raising direct mail and donor cultivation. Really, all the fund-raising issues that make you wonder, am i doing this right? Is there a better way there is? Find the fund-raising fundamentals archive it. You can also learn maura, the chronicle website, philanthropy dot com fund-raising fundamentals, the better way. Duitz are using video every day. Yes, i probably spend, on average two to three hours a day on video chat there’s that comment through a lot, a lot of video in depending on the positions and who’s working with who? Yes, we actually have a staff meeting through webex, where all twenty eight employees get on to video chat, depending on who’s available and who is not in their pajamas. Sometimes people bow out because they don’t want to be put on video, but it’s really helpful to see people and to connect with them at a visual level, even if they’re not physically in the same space where where humans we want way respond to community and and i think visual visual cues as well, it helps a lot to be to be seeing people. People have a tendency. One of my first experiences with this virtual nus was i was working at ibm, and i was project managing. I was doing strategy consulting as project managing the implementation of lotus notes, and we needed the tech team to do work in in order to get the implementation done. The tech team was in armonk, new york, i was living in virginia and we were implementing this to staff nationwide, and what you do is each project manager had to get in touch with the tech team, get them to do stuff, something broke. You had to go back to them, and what we found was i happened to goto, our monk, for our training, and i went into the room where the tech team was sitting and introduced myself. After that, everything seemed slightly easier. And it was just because when i picked up the phone and i ask them to do something, i knew who i was talking to, and they knew who i wass and just having that physical connection made things so much smoother, okay, you said a lot more eloquently than i did. Thank you. Thank you for helping me recover let’s, identify other tools, it’s gotta be google docks, google calendar or something else, what do using collaborative document systems are very helpful for virtual teams, and actually so at idealware, maybe, not surprisingly, since we’re ah, research and knowledge organization, we have mostly introverts on our staff, and i’ve actually found that when we do brainstorming, sometimes it could be more productive. When we do it virtually by typing notes and ideas into a shared google doc than when we actually do it in person, it helps those introverts kind of get there, get there, say, without feeling like they have to jump into the fray of a really lively conversation and gives them space to think a little bit when they need teo and then participate when they’re ready. Cool. So that’s an interesting benefit of working in this manner you see anything like that? I do. I also think that not only the technology tools are important, but laying the groundwork with expectations is key to making sure that everyone’s on the same page so we back in the hiring no, no, no, not unknown in the hiring, but how? How you’re actually running it. So with karen, if you’re if you’re having a conversation, they do it through video conference for us. We’ve set out some and i know you also have communication charters to make sure that when people are connecting with each other, they know how to connect with each other. Charter, what is this? So, for us way, d’oh, d’oh! Basically, what we do is when we hire someone new when they first come on, they get oriented. One of the things we asked them to dio is to talk to us about how they like to be communicated with and sometimes they can’t answer that question up front. But for us, it’s really important to understand if you don’t like email or there’s people, especially we hear this from various employees, they hate the phone, they don’t want to pick up the phone, they don’t talk to someone, the phone rings and they actually like shake. I don’t want to, but if you were to text them or chat with them online, they’d be more than happy to respond to you. And so understanding how people interact on to communicate with their communication makes it so much easier because you don’t have those visual cues. You can’t see if you’re walking into someone’s office and they’re super busy or super stressed or someone’s sitting there on dh, so we like to set it out ahead of time, so let people know what works for them. And similarly, we have eleven golden rules for working as a virtual team and they charter or the golden rules. Whatever we’re gonna call them, okay? They mostly addressed communication. Our number one rule is assume positive intent, which can be hard when you don’t know that somebody didn’t sleep last night because they were up with their baby or, you know, you missed some of that stuff that you might find out at the water cooler, so assume positive intent is is the number one rule. But then we’ve also talked about, for example, with video chat, it can feel very intrusive to just have that turned on all of a sudden, like someone is calling you and without warning, so we have a practice of doing kind of a virtual knock on the door through chat, and if i want to talk to dan, i’ll send him a chat and say, how are you free right now? Is this a good time? And then then we start the video conference, so there’s just a lot of it’s, a lot of etiquette and respecting each other’s time. Um, another thing we do is with email if there’s an urgent reply needed, then we’ll put that right in the subject line because we get such a huge volume of email. That that helps us to scan and know how to be responsive, teo each other when it’s really needed way have to avoid abusing the urgent your gym tag, too, right? Right. Okay, share another golden rule of the eleven golden rules. I wish i had the memorized, but i don’t want to know what well, okay, we start with positive that’s a great one, right? Another one we talked about was email length. And at what point, when you’re writing a four screen email, does that mean it’s time to pick up the phone or or do a hangout? So that’s that’s another one? We have some guidelines about that. All right, let’s. See so cem cem, other tips about doing this successfully emails a big one for us also, my rule is if i have, if i’m on the third email on the same topic, i’m picking up the phone the minute that you have to go back and forth at least three times it’s too much and it’s so interesting. I was at a session this morning and i just heard the best. The best line about email email should be five lines it should tell me who you are, what you want me to do when you want me to do it by why i need to do it for you. And there was one more that i don’t remember, but if it’s longer than that, you’re going to lose people’s attention it’s gonna go into a file and people may never get to it. If you really need something urgently, whether you flag it or pick up the phone like this is the phone is there or create a chat and do it immediately like don’t put it out there into the ethernet and then hope that someone’s going to respond to it in the way that you would expect them to take time to get comfortable with us? Absolutely. If a person is not accustomed to being a virtual employees very much so. And i also think that setting the expectations up front and letting people know that this is not an easy thing is very helpful because some people feel really lost out there, and what we try and do is when a new employee comes on or someone starts to work virtually who wasn’t working virtually before, let them know that that this might be difficult, there’s going to be a learning curve, and we’re here to work with you on it. You’re not just out there by yourself, and you have to do it without anyone any support, karen, have there been people who decided not to work for idealware because it was one hundred percent virtual, has that ever been a ish? You know, we haven’t encountered that. We did have i’m thinking of one staff member in particular, who is very social and enjoys that aspect of working in an office. And so when he became a home based employees that it was an adjustment for him, perhaps more than some of the rest of us who aren’t quite as social and interactive and, uh, it just it took a little bit of of patients and adjustment on his part, i think, for all of us, it also was very important for us to have our own local networks and people that we could interact with, and so many of us will occasionally work from a coffee shop, or i have a group of local friends and colleagues who also work from home for for various ventures, and so one thing we did was because none of us get to have a holiday party with our co workers. We had one with each other, and i i hosted it at my house, and we had maybe six or seven people there who all work independently from home. And so that was a really fun thing to do to kind of a substitute for the social aspects of working with your own team at an office every day. Is there an annual or semiannual gathering of all the tell us? Fifteen employees of idealware uh, dr bonem right? Fifteen? No, we have five. Oh five oh, yes were fairly small teams and you get together physically at least once a year or so way don’t have a set routine, but yes, at least once a year, we’ll all get together. And in the past year, we have gotten together a little bit more often, too, because, well, various reasons i don’t need to come into here. But, you know, there are times when there’s a big change in the organization there’s a big project that you’re working on that just require you to be together more often. Mother, how about you you have to bring these people from eight cities together. We dio way do, and it was a really interesting learning for us when we first started to expand into these other cities. At first, we didn’t bring that anyone in to meet the internal staff in our boston headquarters. Now, anytime a new employees starts at whatever level, if their virtual they come and do a couple of days training in boston with us just to meet everybody, see what the national office looks like and annually. We have a staff retreat in boston where we bring everybody in for two days to get together and brainstorm and talk and just get to know each other. Okay? That’s interesting like the onboarding process has to be face to face. I think that you can’t you can’t get away from what you get the value you get of meeting someone in person, and if you can and if it’s available financially resource wise, timewise, even if you can get together once a year or even at the beginning so people can meet each other in person, it’s invaluable karen would be one hundred percent virtual doesn’t do employees would they get to meet someone face-to-face physically, we have not made a hyre since we became one hundred per cent virtual, so i’m not. I’m not sure what our plans will be for that, but a related issue that non-profit should think through if they’re considering going to a virtual team is is off boarding our when employees exit, how do you handle that? And we were dealing with that right now. We have an employee who is going to be leaving idealware and so we’re thinking about well, ok, how do we collect the stuff that is in storage at her house? The equipment that is ideal wears equipment that that she has in her possession right now? How do we have a farewell party for somebody on really make that a meaningful event when we can’t physically be together? Those those air, all they require creativity and thoughtfulness, and i’m sure we won’t do them perfectly, but that’s something we’re learning. Okay. Interesting. Yeah. The off boarding right. All right, hyre we still have a couple more minutes together. Uh, you well, party. Your session was gonna be ten key steps. Way covered. Any of the ten key? Steps i think you’ve covered most of them in a variety of different ways, but the other thing that we do just one other tip while we’re at it is i’ve spoken to other organizations who have virtual friday drink beers, get togethers, and friday afternoon everyone gets on video, gets their glass of tea, glass of wine, glass of beer, whatever it is and makes it a very low key social environment on video, which takes getting used to when you’re not when it’s not something you do on a regular basis, but it does give you that personal connection again, that you don’t normally get on a day to day basis. And so there’s things like that that you khun dio that seem a little farfetched sometimes that are really helpful. Hi, great, we’ve i’ve had lunch with one of my co workers where we just get on video together and we’re eating and and just chit chatting about things, and it felt very awkward at first but ended up being a really enjoyable experience for both of us. So i recommend just taking some risks getting out of your comfort zone a little bit. I’ve done a wine, wine, chat with who’s there were maybe half a dozen of us the furthest was in in vancouver. I think so. But, you know, you know, half a dozen people what kind of wine do you have? We’re toasting mean, it could be fun. I mean, it is fun, it could be done. It doesn’t have to involve alcohol way happening. Choose wine, you could do a cough, you can do a coffee date and have everyone you know, on video drinking, whatever their seventeen dollars, coffee is heather would use for video, so we use webex when we do our staff, our staff meetings, we’ve used skype for business. We’ve tried google hangouts also, it depends on who’s running the session and what technology they want to use. We haven’t found the perfect one yet we’re still looking. I think that some of the challenges with video are the number of screens you could get on at one time and who you can see equality has improved significantly over the last five years, even but at first, when we were doing this, the line would drop or you couldn’t hear someone or it was pixelated, you know, i’m feeling like i’m talking old school a little bit, but the technology has improved enough that it makes it seem a little bit more realistic and in person and you can get the visuals, which was something that was a challenge. You couldn’t get the facial expressions without the high definition and the faster response time. All right, so i’m gonna wrap this up and bring it full circle, that kind of belief in the technology i can help listeners overcome their reluctance. We talked about initially and in mindset because that’s really what you got to start, and i would also say the technology isn’t the savior to this it khun definitely help it, but you need all of the other pieces to i feel like you shouldn’t use the technology technology to drive this, but there are some great technologies out there that can help with pieces of this. How, how many, uh, in office versus virtual employees does then ten have good question we have i think this is something that i thought was interesting that i wanted to bring up from listeningto, karen and heather’s interview with you from the conference was i actually think there are mohr organizations who have teams or individuals that maybe virtual while they still have a physical office than there are organizations who are one hundred percent virtual all right, and they have no physical presence, so i think a lot of organizations, when they’re thinking about this, how do we adapt to virtual staff? And what of the policies with the advocate ex center? I think a lot of that comes from, they still have a gn office, but now they’re trying to incorporate folks and make people who aren’t in the physical office feel included versus just everybody is having the same kind of remote situation, right? That’s. Interesting because heather and karen idealware, where karen is ceo is a hundred percent virtual and heather at interfaith family is not so right. And you are you are hybrid too, yet you have i know you have people in the portland office, and then you have remote employees? Yep, exactly. Someone ten people. You have ten people here in portland, and then we have five people that are remote, okay? And they’re in different time zones to write not all pacific. Exactly. And i think that’s one of the big considerations with a physical office versus remote staff is that it can become easier or the default time for everything to be in the time zone where the office is, even though you have staff that are another time zone. So i think it’s a challenge, but very important. Try and be mindful of time zones when you try and say, oh, my gosh, you know, we’re having a conversation. We should totally loop someone in to realise thirty six p m their time, they’re not online. They’re not waiting for you to invite them to this meeting. Yeah. Interesting. All right, so how do you how do you manage that, then? On dh something early in the morning? If your east coast staffers are talking, you know your office isn’t open yet. Same thing. Exactly, i mean, when i previously was based in new york as a remote employee of intent, whereas now i’m in the office, there was another employee that was on the east coast, and we found the morning to be super productive because the two of us could just, you know, get through all kinds of things on, and we we often worked together on projects it in that way. It was very convenient that we were the two awake early and could get some stuff done and then present it to other staff when they woke up and got online. But now and ten has just one person in east coast time, one person in mountain time and then remote or, i guess, to eastern and then to pacific outside of the office. So it spread enough that i think it helps us force that conversation. You know, we have to say, okay, we have people in enough time zones. What time is it? Really? Right now on dh once, once it gets after two or three o’clock in the portland office, it gets pretty quiet because we know we can’t engage other staff across time zones. Yeah, all right? Do you have mindfulness? Basically means you have to be mindful of this not planned meetings for three o’clock pacific. Exactly. And you know so many of our meetings, and i don’t think this is unique to intend, but so many of our meetings are already kind of reserved on the calendar, right? You you already know when your staff meeting that’s going to be because it’s a recurring meeting and so just making sure that you use those recurring calendar items as a way that start building in that pattern of this is these are the times during the day you could meet with folks. I think that really helped, because then outside of that is when people, maybe, you know, just kind of go head down and work on their own. Whatever is on their to do list. And you set a pattern by the meetings that you schedule in advance. Okay. Yeah, i see. All right. What about the personalities the heather and karen mentioned one of them mentioned. You know, then a lot of introverts, karin said i do. Do you find that in a few different people’s personalities when we’re talking about virtual hi. I actually don’t find it to be different than if you were all in the office together. I mean, i think that if everybody was all in one office, you’re naturally just by probability, right of humans. You’re naturally gonna have some folks that maybe regardless of their personality or just not folks who maybe process in real time in a meeting and are gonna have something to say there people who want that information and they want to go back and think about it before they have an answer, whether they’re an introvert or not. That’s just how they process information. And so in a in a meetings, they were all in one room. Whoever is running that meaning it’s probably i would hope, you know, reaching out to folks who are quiet in the meeting insane. Do you? You know, pulling something out? Do you have something you want to share? Their questions that’ll help you think about this, you know? What are we not considering and that that process, that kind of managing a meeting happens whether everybody’s all in the same room or you’re all of that google hangout? Or you’re talking to two people? In a instant message conversation, you know, i think being thoughtful and intentional about how you interact and kind of manage meetings and manage conversations, it’s the same lessons it’s the same processes, andi, i think, you know, karen’s point about sometimes using those online tools that folks feel like they can participate when maybe they wouldn’t have spoken up in a meeting that could totally be true. I think for me and that antenna it’s really about just regardless of how this meeting is happening, is everybody contributing or does everybody have the answers they need so that we can end the meeting and you know where to go back? Do you find it difficult? Tio include members, employees when if the meeting is by phone, you know and like three or four people are sitting in the conference room or something. And then however, many people are remote and it’s just and thereby phone, not video. Sometimes you have to be very mindful that there are two other people on the phone and it’s hard for them times for them to speak up because they don’t know when the pauses air coming. I mean, you find any awkwardness? Around that, yeah, that’s a good point, i think. Well, two things they’re two strategies one if it’s i think anton has a similar experience, as karen and heather both shared in the interview that if it’s an internal meeting, if it’s really just with other staff, we wouldn’t use the phone, we would use video conference people can kind of raise their hand, or they can post a chat that says, hey, i want to bring something up once we’re done with this point, you know it, and we can manage that easier when it’s on video and then the other strategy that that i think is really helpful, just like best practice generally for mediums, is that if we’re having the meeting, we have a shared document where we’re taking notes, so sometimes that means we could kind of go down a rabbit hole, right? And three of the five people in the meeting are going off on this thing with the other two people maybe don’t want to lose a thought they could just put it into the notes, doc, and we come back to it once we’re done with that rabbit hole, right? We’re we’re still capturing things in a couple different channels, plus as the best practice. Now you have notes from that meeting, right? Yeah, school. All right, all right. Um, what about the part about bringing new employees in who aren’t accustomed to working remotely? Yeah, i think it can be very overwhelming for a new staff person. We try and include processes, best practices, etiquette, social norms in our orientation, but not we don’t do it as a great you’re an employee for the next two hours. We’re going to tell you how we do everything in this, like, remote team versus office environment instead, you know, maybe there’s a section of the orientation where you’re talking with your manager, whoever you’re going to be working with and they’re talking about, okay, these are the meetings were goingto have regularly here’s how you and i are going to check in here’s how i encourage you to check in with others and then in that conversation, you know, talking about some social norms around how to engage folks that are remote verses in the office and where to post content for others to see it and, you know, so we kind of embed the lessons around how we want to operate together into the full process of orientation it’s not a stand alone great here’s how to use instant message er, right hand here’s, here’s, howto chat with folks or hey, remember that these folks were in these time zone, so send them a quick ping before you try and call them, right? Because you don’t know, you can’t see them, so maybe they’re gonna call already or something. You know, i like the suggestion of some virtual knock on the door before you open a video chat with somebody well, and, you know, we honestly we do that in the office, i can see you, but that doesn’t mean that i know if you’re actually muted running a webinar just because it looks like you’re sitting in your desk, so because we are all online or on the phone or running webinars, whatever it might be, it doesn’t matter if you’re in the office or not that’s become kind of standard practice. I am somebody before you walk over to them anyway. Eyes that right? Okay, see, it’s so been so long since i had to work with other people in an office. You had to work with you one of punishment that wass well, okay, i don’t think i’d be a very good employee anymore. We’ll put it that way. Yes, i can see that. Thank you. I don’t think i would hyre myself. I would. I would. I would kill it in the interviews. I mean, why kill it? I mean, i would i would i would kill a possibility. Yes, i would ruin my chances in the interview stage. I would not be a good employee, but so i didn’t know that. So so so in offices, people you i am someone before you, uh, you go and knock on their door anymore before you just walk down and see them. Well, i think part of it is that most staff don’t have a door because we’re working in an open, more collaborative space. And so folks may go behind the door to run a webinar, for example, and then you definitely know they’re offline or not available for you to go talk to, but sometimes you might just be on a phone call and have your line muted for a minute, right? Because someone else is speaking of course, because you’re not speaking out loud doesn’t mean you’re ready for somebody to walk right up to your desk and say something because one ear can still hear the phone call, so okay, i yeah, it’s been since ah nineteen when’s the last time i worked for somebody else was nineteen, no, two thousand three, two thousand three was my last employer for you. Did you know, i think defect tio the idea of being in office where people have really accepted that norm of let’s, just quickly hop on a video call right and have this conversation kind of face-to-face even though your remote, it also means that the folks who really are in the office have to anticipate that at any given moment of the day, they could be in the background of someone’s video, you could be walking past somebody who’s on, you know, has their camera on or maybe the way they’re seated, you know, you’re kind of close enough to them that if they hop on a video and don’t move their screen, you’re kind of in the background doing your email on dh i think that’s just part at least at an ten. It isn’t seen as a negative it’s seen as like, oh, well, i was talking to you, i saw that so and so was was, you know, talking to this person, i didn’t realize they were in the office. Could you tell them this for me? You know? And it makes it feel that much more connected. I can see what’s going on right now that we’re in a new space. As you noted, when when i first talked on the phone, we’re in this new office, we’ll remote staff haven’t seen the new office, and so on monday, everybody in the office wanted to have a conversation about okay, we’re in here now, like, what else do we need? Do we need more chairs or tables? Is there any? Are there any problems we need to address in? There? Were you know, there were problems with, you know, sometimes if we turn the air on it’s too loud for webinar rooms, it’s just too noisy in the room and, you know, just surfacing these issues that you don’t know until you get into the space. Well, all of the remote staff requested to be part of that conversation because they want to know what we’re struggling with. They want to know that if they hop on a quick, you know, video call with us and somebody’s complaining, or or something, they could say, hey, is it because the air is on and it’s really loud, like i understand what you’re going through? I have some insight into that. They want to be a part of it. Cool, all right, that’s, a human, human connection. All right, we gotta take, we got to go away for break. I mean, what about the face-to-face like, do you have face-to-face orientations for new employees? Or do you have annual gatherings where everybody’s together? How do you manage the face-to-face part? Definitely. I think the face-to-face piece is huge. I mean, we we consider some amount of the video calls to be, quote unquote face-to-face you know, we don’t want things to be completely removed into just documents, so we have ah, move a few different layers so that every day at nine thirty pacific, regardless of where you are in the world, if you are working that day, you are expected to be on aa meeting, where every single staff person is able to check in and say, hey, tony, i’ve been waiting on this thing from you so that i can follow-up or this is my big priority today, so if you see me in my head bowed there on, don’t bother me. I got a big deadline, you know, whatever, it might be this on your list, but away for every single staff person to be visible to everybody else, whether they’re in the office. Or not. And then every monday, we have a full staff meeting. That’s actually programmatic. So you know whether it’s a proposal first from somebody or a certain team wants to give an update whatever that might be, you know, formal agenda every monday, but twice a year, all staff come to portland for a full week of planning meetings and happy hours and lots of eating. And and then outside of those two meetings, you know, we have our conference. We have our own events that also bring all the staff together. Okay, off course. The portland food scene is it was worth gathering around exactly so cool sametz priority than planning meeting second. Yeah, we have the trucks, the trucks, air. The trucks are key. You can have. Yeah, there are only two blocks from the office now, but that would mean a lot of trucks, but i’m being a new yorker. I’m calling them trucks. They’re called cart their carts, right? Not trucks? Yes, their carts. Right. And what you call a collection of carts? What is that called? A cart pod. A court pod, right? Right. Just like whales. Write a card pot. But, you know, you call it a pod? Or would you say i’m going to the cart pod? Or you just say, i’m going to the pod, you say i’m going to the cart, the cart’s? Oh, you don’t say pot. Ah, ok, ok. Yeah, it’s. Very important. But anyway, so you do this twice a year, twice a year. All in ten step. Okay, very good to know. Alright. So that’s different than the heather and karen managed things, but cool. Okay. Okay. And then, of course, yeah. You’re conferences drop the whole staff together. Two leading change on tc, right? Yeah. Okay, exactly. And i think, you know, as much as there were all there to run the conference. We’re also there a couple days early. Everybody gets to catch up and see each other in person. But i also think there’s a lot to be said for doing something together, you know, by the end of the week, even though we didn’t spend the weekend casual planning meetings and eating food from the food cards, you know, we get to the end of the week and feel like everybody has certainly bonded has certainly had all kinds of conversations because we just we just ran the whole conference together, right? It really creates an opportunity for there to be a lot of connections. What else came out of that conversation that you want to talk about? We still have a couple minutes left. Yeah, well, i thought one thing that we could chat about were some justice, you know, kind of kind of boring things around policies think at inten we’ve found to be really important so something that organizations may not think about, but karen alluded to this at the very end when talking about, you know, staff person, that leaving the organization and they have all this equipment, the organization really should be providing that equipment, just like you would to someone that’s in the office. So even though you’ve been hired as a remote employee, that doesn’t mean you don’t need a laptop in a second monitor and a phone and all of those pieces. So thinking about policies that treat a remote staff person just like you would a staff person, as in the office, and i think that also goes further to say in the office, right? And ten pays for all of all of the office for the electricity and the internet and everything else. So, do you have policies that they for staff who were working from from their home as they’re expected space, that you will reimburse them for some of their internet or some of their phone cost? Etcetera? Okay, very, uh, very thoughtful policies you have. Okay, do what i think something else that karen heather brought up was, you know, remote staff feeling like, oh, today i’m going to go work from a coffee shop or today, you know, i just need to get out of my house has been sitting in my living room for four days straight, right? I think it also goes a really long way to make sure that feeling of freedom is shared between folks in the office and folks who are remote so that you don’t create this feeling that, like remote staff have it better or folks in the office have it better, everyone should feel like, hey, i really need to write this article and i want to focus. I’m going to go to a coffee shop and sit by myself for two hours. It doesn’t matter if you work from home or you work from the office. If you’ve created that culture, everyone should get to be a part of that. No. Okay. Egalitarian. Right. Okay. Yes. Um what else? What else came out of that that you want to talk about? Well, one thing that i thought was interesting that was brought up right at the end that end ten has a different version of is that idea of ah, kind of virtual happy hour. And i think part of it for us, the reason why it isn’t necessarily happy hours because again time zones, you don’t want to tell somebody that is three hours ahead. Hey, you should wait until eight. Get back on your computer, have a glass of wine. Would you like to be part of the team right now? That doesn’t feel very fair. So instead, what we have is a weekly lunch. So in the office here we turn on a google hangout and, you know, open up the line, essentially and that any of the remote folks can also call in if they’re free. It’s not required it’s. Not like people in the office have to stop right at noon and start eating. Lunch on video. You know it’s just anybody that wants to have lunch together and chat the line is open, you can hang out and you know, it’s gonna happen every single thursday. So if this thursday you can’t do it, no big deal. But next thursday, you can call in on dh. It just creates that kind of open conversation space where you can chat about sometimes work sometimes good ideas for work, but also just random things. What are you doing for the weekend, etcetera? Welcome amy. Thank you for having me. Thanks for coming all the way to the show. Absolutely from from new york and north carolina. It’s ah, it’s. Always a pleasure to meet you in person. Yeah, do so we don’t get. Yeah, we don’t get to see each other in person very often. No, your voice is the same. Thank you. You sound like yourself. You think we’re highlighting one and ten swag item? Oh, and one ntcdinosaur ag item each interview, and right now, of course i’ve got my ten headband. You probably didn’t notice that i was wearing a amy suggested exercise video, so i could be doing i could be doing yoga or squat thrust, but we have a small lead us in some jazzercise. So i’m going to take this off now and added to the swag pile. We’re all the all the swag for the show goes okay, sixteen ntcdinosaur yeah, here we are. How we doing? Way we got it. We got two thousand people. Yeah, way exactly. It’s. I am surprising how many people two thousand is when it’s in one room. You know, i think in my mind, two thousand seems like kind of, you know, it’s a big conference, but it’s not a huge conference, you know, you hear about conference like dreamforce with, you know, sell by self. What, like an entire town is coming to this conference? So our seems so small and then, you know, and like in the morning planter everybody’s in there and you look at you like there’s, a lot of people here this is actually a pretty big conference. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Turns out there are a whole lot of people that want to talk about technology for use in their non-profit at a growing number every year. Exactly. Yeah. Yeah, let’s. See? So, what are some highlights for people who are here? But of course they’re listening and tc conversation tonight there will be available starting tonight, and we want to even tease twenty seventeen. Yeah, we got twenty, five hundred people e like my overreaching twenty twenty. I don’t, i don’t think twenty five hundred. I mean, sure, you’re welcome to come, but i just think we’ll get there. No, i mean, our goal isn’t necessarily to try and grow in every year. We want to make sure we’re still serving everybody. So you’ll be ambitious and we’ll be conservative. Okay? Okay, yeah, i liked so, soldier were so highlights of this year. Well of you are on site. A couple highlights. You definitely need to make sure you go to selfie town selfie town and take some photos with the big t rex. Yeah, well, good. We can do a selfie and sell freetown unite, okay? And we’ve got i mean, all the session, all the folks that you’re interviewing there are over a hundred twenty sessions in three days. So whether you’re here or not, you don’t have to go for like, ten minutes into every single session every break out, teo, get all that content there’s what we call collaborative notes so they’re google docks for every single session where attendees in real time in the session take notes about what’s being presented so that everybody else can benefit from that knowledge even if you’re not in that room that we call them collaborative notes. But the links are just in the agenda online. So you khun browse through, see what people are writing down? Does that do this year? No, it’s not we’ve done it. We’ve done it every year for a number of years now because people like it so much, you know? They know, even if i don’t go to that session, i could just look up the collaborative notes and see what people wrote down. Yeah, exactly. And then it helps for folks who aren’t here to, they can see that, but i think even though you know, there are lots of different tools every year that people use people consistently use twitter the most of the conference, even if they’re not a big twitter user the rest of the year. So following the sixteen inches hashtag or every session has its own hashtag like sixteen auntie sees something, so if you see on the online agenda, even if you’re not here that you really want to follow that session, you know, just put that into a twitter search even if you’re not a twitter user and follow along. What what folks are saying? Because people post so you can’t read all of them all of the treats you have tio, you know, filter it out, but because i think that’s what’s different about the ntc people want to be sharing what they’re learning, you know or share what they know it’s not like, oh, i’m here to learn everything and write it down in my secret notebook, you know? Yeah, but intent is not like that either. Exactly. Well, look, by the way, let’s put a little shout out for another hashtag non-profit radio yes, i can’t say that we suffer from too much you can’t follow-up it’s not however i mean it does well it’s respectable hashtag yeah tech non-profit radio no intend intent is definitely a very collaborative sharing. I mean, even for non members. Yeah, you have a ton of content available, you know about the year. Exactly. Yeah. This morning at the plenary, i was highlighting one aspect of intense content. And today was the research that we do so five to eight reports every year some of those we do by ourselves because we just need them to happen on others we do with partners or sponsors. So them, the most recent report is the state of the cloud, which we’ve only done one previous time, and that was four years ago. And the difference between that report and this report is that now one hundred percent of people responding said they use at least one cloud tool, whereas that was not true four years ago. So looking now, okay, if we do that report again in a couple of years, what’s the difference, then everyone says they use at least to everyone, you know, clearly that’s the trend. So but all of that, i mean, that report and all of the rest of our research you can download even if you’re not remember. So go use that knowledge, especially if you’re trying to make the case to your board or to your staff that you want to change something the research is there to support better decision making and ten dot org’s because you don’t know now intent. This’s. Eventually i’ve been to your nine nine because i’m a member yet that i’m a donor. Yeah, in a nosey where’s, the you’re underpaid should be lobbying for double double n t e end. Ah lot of people think the e stands for education, so we’ll get we’ll get people writing to us. Say, non-profit technology education network, which sounds great. It’s, not us. Maybe that is an organization out there, but yeah, do not donate to the non-profit technology. Education work, right? Yes. You want to give to end exactly the legitimate riel and ten? Yes. Okay. Ok, so that so you’re fostering that kind of exactly hearing and this is no surprise. I mean, there’s, you see, you know, we’re not an association. We are a c three and we have a membership because for us, membership helps us know that we’re either on track or we’re not. If nobody wants to join anymore, then we’re clearly not delivering value. And if people want to join and they want to renew, okay, then we’re on the right path. You know, it’s an indicator for us, it’s, not our business. We’re not an association, and we’re never going to achieve our mission by saying everyone has to be a member, right? If if our mission is really that all non-profits are able to use technology to really do their work to really meet their mission. Well, we can’t say they all have to be members because then it’s gonna be even harder to reach an already impossible mission, right? We’re creating way too many barriers for ourselves. Yeah, actually, that’s what i admire about the organization i do embody that also where you share on non-profit radio month after month after month for three years. Now you kayman after that. You came after the hundredth show? Yeah. Hundred schnoll was your first. Yes, it was my very first. We’re coming up on three hundred this july. Yes. So that b two hundred sho? Yeah. Four yearsworth. Six years. Okay. Back-up let’s say, you know, this is our opportunity, our annual opportunity. Tio recap. Inten yeah. Uh, right now we know the mission. Of what way do you want to become a member? He’s? Very like me to say affordable, yes. Very reasonably accessible, accessible. Yeah, like, yeah, it’s. Not cheap. Okay, yeah, we’re accessible. Yeah. Run that down. So if you are for the most common situation, is that a non-profit has less than five hundred thousand a year? Is your annual operating budget that the majority of non-profits non-profit radio listeners? Yeah, exactly. Yet. So it’s seventy dollars for a year for all of your staff to be that members all your staff, the whole organisation, as many people as you want to have joined. Exactly that. If you’re at that budget level that annual revenue with an annual budget of a half million dollars yellow as many people, you can stuff into a membership welcome for seventy bucks. Exactly. And you save three hundred dollars on all of those people coming to the ndc. Um plus, of course, there’s all the benefits he around, you know that aren’t just here at the ntc, you have access to webinars either at a reduced rate or for free. So for example, you were just on one of our ask the expert webinars and noser those air free. But they’re only open to members. So you get to talk to smart people like tony every month and ask question about all different topics on dh those have really spanned, you know, sometimes like yours was on podcasting, so much more niche, but then there’s others where they’ve been about, you know, finance or hr, what are the tools for that? What are the things i haven’t even been thinking i’m supposed to be doing? You know, all kinds of topics on dh, then outside of education discounts and auntie si discounts, members are promoted through all of our content channel, so you should be submitting a guest article for one of our topics each month. There’s a different topic on the website participating and research participating in tech clubs. You know, we want to make sure that if you are remember, we’re promoting you up and you’re getting access to leadership, you’re getting to be a volunteer and have you no access to new skillsets through that mean, really, we want to make sure if there’s something that we d’oh or something that we can do that helps you in your career were providing that avenue throughout town about thie over half a million dollars a year budget what’s the what’s the cost there for membership. Then the costs go up by your operating budget kind of level. So under five hundred above above that up to a million and there’s tears from there. But even the highest here, i believe, is three. Thirty five. Oh, my god. So even if you have millions and millions of position, right, three hundred thirty five dollars, right? So we’re talking. Yes. Accessible? Yes, exactly. All right. Well, should we? You know, we should, uh, a little more a little more about the ntc because we wait. We kind of glossed over where we’re sitting right now. Yeah, what’s coming up days two and three. So, yeah, so tomorrow we have at the plenary at least three different folks who are going to talk, you know, this morning we had ignites. So those air five minute kind of short conversations tomorrow are three key notes are going to have a really luxurious fifteen minutes to talk, and then we’re going to have a conversation together. And they’re all talking about different perspectives around digital equity. So looking at myths that we all may be ah participating in or believing when it comes to who is online, who has access to our beautiful emails were crafting every day, you know? And what does that mean as faras our own digital strategy for not thinking about who’s really trying to access our content? But we’re jumping all over, okay? And ten last year, this was an issue you and i talked about on the show was was encouraging. Uh, non-profits to do speak to the fcc to make comments about the deal was a digital inclusion actors so that’s that’s that actor’s past. We’ve passed that yet? Yeah, and we also last year had a report similar on a similar topic around digital adoption and whether organizations even saw themselves as part of that work, you know? So i think tomorrow will be a good kind of next next section of that conversation. Yeah, sensibility, but equity, exactly. Yeah. Accessibility, let’s make it right. Just because a library exists doesn’t mean we all have access to that library either, right or the times it’s open or the limited number of computers there, maybe. Or the bus fare to even go on our on the bus to get to. But, you know, all of these pieces contribute to us thinking, oh, everybody, you know, because this is san jose or because i live in portland and it’s a city everyone’s online, they’re not still write. So are different presenters were going to talk about some of those misperceptions both urban settings, suburban, rural settings, a cz well as larger systemic, you know? So who is making the tools we’re using that’s? Not necessarily all of us a right. So does that mean that they’re going to somehow make a tool? That’s really great for me if if someone like me isn’t part of that process, so just kind of raising a lot of questions, i think i don’t know that there’ll be a lot of answers tomorrow, but there’ll be a lot of questions on and then we’ll have a bit of a conversation. So i think that’ll be a good day, too. You know, the first day we got to feel things out, meet some new people. Tomorrow we can go a little heavy, and then on the final day on friday, we’ll have more of those ignite presentations. And the theme for friday’s ignite is it is oh, makers n p tech makers today was my blank career. Yeah. Yeah, makers. Friday, what’s makers, makers. So these are people who have made a tool there, people who have made a community there, people who have made something inspirational in their life. They ve made a physical space, you know, they’ve they i think folks are taking a pretty diverse definition. Turn on friday. Yeah, yeah, but i’ve had the opportunity to hear all of their talks ahead of time as they submitted their slides and came to rehearsal. And they’re kind of all over the place. It’s going to be great. Okay. Yeah. It’s ignite sessions, your slides move automatically. Your whether you’re ready for them to move or not. Right. Exactly. Every every how many seconds? Every fifteen seconds. Yes. All right. Yeah. You got to keep pace with your slides. Exactly. Your husband max, is stage managing. Yes. Oh, he’s there with a stopwatch, i presume. You know, wave automated that power but it’s every fifteen seconds. Yeah, exactly. And you know it’s surprising how much you can say in fifteen seconds if you planned for it. If you are someone who you know is going toe into it your way through your presentation you’re waiting for to slide, to pop up and then you kind of react to it. You will never stay out of it, you know? You have to have thought ok, i could only make one point per slide, right cause fifteen seconds. Just going to fly by. Yeah, ignite. Yes, yes, i think they’re a spectator sport. You know, that’s why? They’re great. That’s. Why? They’re great for the ndc. So what was the reaction today at the my blank career ignites? They were really great. They similarly, we’re kind of taking a few different paths. There were a couple folks whose ignite story personal story was more about, you know, reflecting back and thinking, oh, i actually have had a career, you know, first is all these different jobs that at the time felt like a totally different path every time i took the, you know, took a new job. Now, looking back, i can see there is a through line, right? And there was some sort of purpose to all of this on dh then and then a few folks talked about kind of challenges that they’ve had. So, you know, in my career have i made the right decision. Or was i really kind of living the values i said? I wass or was i kind of leaving people in the dust as i went through there? So i think there were some good contemplated sessions and some some funny ones, as people realised, you know, for example, molly. Her title was my cheese castle career, because in wisconsin, she worked at the mars she’s castle, and, you know, she learned some valuable career lessons while working in a cheese factory. So, yeah, we’re learning every day, exactly, exactly, technology. Wait, we should teo little more shout out about about intend, okay, the features of of what you’ve got going on, whether or not a member, you know what else is happening there. So i think some of the biggest stuff that’s goingto go on this year twenty sixteen wise for antennas where, where? Changing a bit of what we consider our educational programs and, you know, it’s twenty sixteen it’s pretty easy to come across a webinar on the internet, you know, and we’ve always held very high standards for content that was in a, you know, an online program like a webinar for ourselves, but that doesn’t mean anyone else knows that our standards air different than anyone else’s on dh. So what we’re going to do this year is change that focus and have it be really explicitly on training. So if you want to participate in a program with us, even if it’s a one time program there will be learning objectives, there’s, homework, there’s, riel, riel training that outcomes that, you know you’re getting on dh, that you can actually do a number of those and have them add up to a non-profit technology perfect. Professional certificate so if you complete enough programs in, you know, a year will be able to give you a certificate creating a sort of exactly and ten certification yet exactly. Oh, yeah, and that way, folks, you know, that we’ve heard from for years have who come to intend for training because a there’s nowhere else maybe that they thought they could go or was directly on the content that we had, you know, four non-profits on technology versus just maybe technology for anyone or more business focused, but also that there’s some sort of validation, they know these things, right? I mean, i think a very common story you’ll hear even at the anti sees that people say, you know, i was hired to do x i was hired to be the communications manager, but actually, i’m now in charge of our website, you know, i’m working with our advocacy team on all of our data management, and i want to prove that i have technical skills, even though maybe that hadn’t been written into the job description when i was hired esso i could i’ve either get a raise or maybe go to a different team or go to another organization, but i can’t i can’t prove i have those skills, you know, cause i don’t have my college degree in this topic, you know, tc conferences, right? Exactly. I yes, i have my own learning, but i don’t have a way of proving exactly what this is all led to exactly. Yeah, yeah. So that, you know, we’re not trying to say this is like your master’s program or anything exactly it’s professional certificate to help you have that proof that someone else can stand behind you and say yes, you know, tony really does know these things. Okay, you know, what is this certification called the non-profit technology professional certificate. Okay. Very aptly, yes. You know, i believe in naming things for what they are. No, you’re non-profit radio, you know, that’s what it is. Okay, so you haven’t rolled this out officially technically yet? No, we’ll be announcing it at tomorrow’s plenary. But, you know, the kind of shift in training away from more one time webinars that feel, you know, like you showed up. And then you left into webinars that have those riel learning outcomes. That’s that’s already kind of a shift. That we’re making in our scheduling and planning for all of our program’s going forward. So we’re going to see, like, two credits, this this will be we probably won’t call them credits no, because it’ll just be a class a program, okay, how do you how do you lead to you? How do you know what you need to do to get the certification? Ah, well, first it’s all on the website, but there’s a corps. So, you know, no matter what, you’ll take this kind of ten week, make sure you have skills across an organization, and then you just have to take five more more courses during the rest of the year. So you just pick oh, this one really interest me or i want to only do one on fund-raising because that’s, where i’m trying to prove i have these skills or, you know, so you kind of choose or they’re kind of like electives, you know, the rest of the time, okay? Yeah. Yeah, just one certification, not different tracks. So i know now is this ash, shepherds, department abilities and he’s education? Yeah. He’s, the education director. S o he’s. Certainly deeply involved, but like anything it in ten. This is every all hands on deck. You know, everybody controlled contributes yet exactly because at the end of the day, it’s going to take communities and take membership. It’s going take marketing. You know, everybody is gonna have to be a part of it being successful. Okay? Yeah, we have another couple of minutes to get. So all the way through june and then in july and maybe a little bit and august, i think mostly in july is when everybody convert on sessions help filter down that list we normally have between four and six hundred submissions and there’s only going to be one hundred twenty, two hundred thirty on the agenda. So the voting really helps us. Yeah, and that that way by the fall we can say here’s the lineup and registration opens november first. Okay? Yeah. Twenty seventeen will there be? Pleasure to have you with unison. We’re in sync. So coordinated. Yes. Your session topic is here, there and everywhere. Distance volunteer training. Ashley, do we need to get our mind set first? Just being willing tto recognize that there’s value in doing training for volunteers? That is not face-to-face we just have to get our minds right first. Is that it? Yeah, i think we do have teo to adjust to it a little bit. It’s? Definitely not. Picking up emmanuel and reading it anymore. It’s definitely much more involved, but it also gives us the ability to do a lot of different things and made a lot of different learning styles. Yes, learning styles. Chad let’s. Say something about how do we know what different styles are out there among our volunteers? Yeah, so there’s in general, four types of learning styles, visual learners, auditory learners reading and writing and kinesthetic. The truth is, we all learn a variety of ways, but some people have preferences in town. They prefer to learn are they learned bath so providing things through mobile multiple modalities can help people learn retain better and so doing that to be a distance. Actually, some benefits because you had to newsome technology to, like, show video or play audio or have pictures a supposed to sometimes like face-to-face someone standing in front of you in the room. Okay, how dispersed are your volunteers at the kneel squire society? Their throat canada throw canada latto ours in our burnaby area, but our model provide has volunteers and clients. I can’t make it to her office, able to connect through ah live on one on one computer training, so it allows us to reach people that otherwise we won’t be able to reach in actually grows our impact with instead of having just people that come in her all this month. Monday to friday nine to five volunteers khun do their tutoring or training afternoons, evenings, weekends, whatever works best actually allows us they reach people that otherwise you wouldn’t okay actually options for sexual health. Are you canadian? Also? We are yes. Okay, are you equally dispersed or we’re not all across canada, we’re just in british columbia. We have sixty clinics that operate through a british columbia, and we have volunteers at about forty nine of those clinics. So we definitely do have a lot of geographic reach. Okay? And in terms of our volunteer training is this we’re doing this virtually ongoing is not just initial training, but is there a need for continue training as the person goes through the life cycle of a being a volunteer? Yeah, actually, yeah, absolutely. So right now what we’ve done is we have the online training that kind of sets are level one, volunteers up to b level two volunteers and after they’ve done the level to volunteer training than what they can do to continue their own education is participate in our webinars and our clinical webinars, as well as repeat the training in the future if they want to continue their education. Okay, what? What distinguishes that duvette levels? Yeah. What kind of question? So for us in our clinical setting level one volunteers to a lot of good men work. So they’re the backbone of the clinic there’s supporting the clinic. They’re providing any attention and support that our staff need our level. Two volunteers are providing contraceptive education training, so they are herbs. So i volunteered around the contraception with the clients that come in. So they’re providing the education for our clients. And with that, the training that we give them allows them to sit with the clients, provide the information, educate them. Okay. How about kneel, squire? What volunteers doing there? Yeah. It’s a very different from ashley’s works where they have people working in clinics. Love. Our volunteers are basic computer trainers, computer tutors. So the mount training we have is definitely not as long. Or his deepest ashley’s eyes more just helping people like use of the technology that used to set up and give them some teaching best practices, toe health um, being, in fact, impactful tutor. Okay, all around it. A technical learning. Yeah, yeah. So it’s and it’s really driven by what the person the disability wishes to learn. So perhaps i want to learn to how to use, like office or word or excel and that’s. Great. Maybe they want to learn how to use facebook to see what the kids are up to, our snapchat or whatever, right, so it’s really driven by like what their needs and their goals are, and then the tutor because it is one on one they work with, um ah, i’ve thrown pacing and see the screen from their screen. Um, connected them, and we’ll help, um, meet and work on their goals. Okay, all right. So let’s, talk about some of the strategies xero we all can benefit from and for virtual volunteer training. Who wants to start with some strategy ideas? Yeah, we talked a little bit about this in our session. Where there’s different tools, i can allow you to kind of help do others online. This is training. A lot of ours has done synchronously like through a webinar. So the volunteers that we’ve recruited come in. And we do an online training session with, um and it’s the same platform that they will then use when they connect two their participants there tutoring along the way. So there’s synchronised sort of learning that kind allows us to connect in real time to do some skilled developments of technical testing with the person. Make sure the computer is writing, enable and helping them the skills they need. Ashley has ah, different model that they do their volunteer to anyone. Go ahead. Yeah, so we use model, which is an asynchronous model. And basically, what we do with our volunteers is there’s eight weeks of training where they participate around two to four hours per week. And they are longing into this middle course so that they can read and view different videos and discussion forums and quizzes and journal post so they are very much involved in as charges, saying earlier we use different methods to kind of get the learning happening. So synchronous would be, like, live real time learning. So like, for example, in education, that would be like you’re in a classroom together. So today we’re all doing this. So synchronous is like a live, real time sort of thing. So technology tools enable that might be like, ah, twitter chat might be ah, weapon are those would be like synchronous examples where asynchronous is sort of at your own pace or your own time. So if the synchronised is your classroom, asynchronous would be like your textbook but someone could work for. So the model platform that we both use but actually uses for volunteer training. It’s like a website. But bill specifically with learning places, pieces in place, right? So you can have a form or quiz, and that all comes as part of it. You just kind of literally click a button to add a new quays, and they start taking your questions for people along the way. So the best method really is a bit bland. Tohave, you know, some live face-to-face time to build some report, but also have some asynchronous things to support people to ganga with their own pace. The latto research shows that a blend of the both is really the magic sauce. Okay? And your session is going to be spent. Or you did send your special did it already. Pros and cons of different tools. Right. So, yeah, we talked that’s, let’s dive into boodle. Yeah, yeah. We talked a little bit about, like, volunteers and engaging volunteers that’s on the benefits of having a distance model and how it could grow your impact. And then we did talk about some of the different tools that we both use along the way. Model is an open source tool. I was free to download free to use our i pay for some of the host because i don’t want to worry about administrating a server along the way, but and it’s ah totally open. So we’ve done like a lot of customization at our work to try to make it more accessible to people, the variety, different abilities or disabilities we’ve built, like a scream leader for our site, we built a custom youtube player to allow it to be easy for someone as low vision doctor control the playback of the video, so we’ve done a lot of work try to customize it, to make it a simple and easy as possible for people to use and that’s the beautiful thing with open source is you kind of have you can tinker and play and adapt to meet your own personal needs. Ok, actually, what would you like to add about boodle? Yeah, one of the cons that we’ve been experiencing lately is we’re using an old version of mood or one of the cons. You’re one of the concerts that we’re using the old version, so we’re having some things that are starting to not work the way we want them to. So i mean that the pros of open source is that they’re amazing and you can customize them and you can make him do the things you want them to dio. But unless you have someone who is an expert on site upgrading them to the new version when the new version comes out could be a real challenge now, is that a cost? Reason is that why? Why you? Using an older version cost and time i would say the to kind of go hand in hand non-profit a lot of the time but absolutely it’s it’s a cost issue. It would cost time and money to get up to where we wanted to be so okay, yeah, okay. Anything more about boodle that we should share with listeners i want to get yeah, just like it. No one’s looking at building a learning platform i would say give it a shot. It’s used by over, like eight hundred thousand universities worldwide. The open university in the uk uses it and it supports over a million people connected to it on a daily basis. So it’s super robot! Some people have this misconception that always open source software is going to be flaky. This is this. Like rock star, six, super well supported by the community, their head office there in australia. But there’s. A number of, um, oodle connection, sort of communities around there that you support the australia. I don’t know about birth and the world. I love australia. One other thing i love. Australia doesn’t, but i do look now. Okay, so we have exhausted boodle anything more you want to share? My little quick thing to add is that our volunteers, regardless of kind of how tech savvy they are, they do, for the most part find model quite easy to navigate and quite easy to understand. We do have to give them a little bit of set up and support and getting used to it, but once they’re logged on the majority of them, do you find it quite easy? Deals for the interface is is good even for low, low tech sophistication. Absolutely. All right, another one you were goingto we’re going talk. Teo gotomeeting both using goto or no, i’m using another tool called blackboard collaborate on it’s a webinar tool very similar. I mean, i want to talk about gotomeeting oh, you’re taking over the show. I’m sorry i had to yours. Us what again? Blacks missed it so quickly. Yeah, very carefully. And latto the tool that i’m using is called blackboard collaborate. One of the reasons why we went with that tool is because its primary markets education, the united states education i states is like super well regulated around accessibility. So law of accessibility features that some of our users would need are there in that platform comparatives on the others that are on the market at the time when we chose that other tool, i’m sure things have evolved in the last few years. Um, and the other thing that with the r black or collaborate licenses, i can kind of set up infinite webinar rooms they haven’t synchronously. So i have, you know, an online career program that people in bc might be doing, and then that could have four five different webinar rooms where people are doing one on one volunteer training and then a wellness program we’re going on in the eastern side of the country allows me to kind of have one interface where can manage all these different rooms and tools, and and it works, you know, when it works, it works really well on this job of bass. So it works across platform. Is that is that open source also know is not open source? No, no, no, the open source of equivalent that is, uh, we’re going take a serious look at coming up is called big blue button. So is again a weapon. Our tool, but it is open source on dh. We’re starting to investigate that and attempt to kind of drive down costs. Actually, you are not using the blackboard collaborative. No, we’re not. We’re actually not using anything for our volunteers. Currently we are using go to webinar as something that our clinical department is utilizing for education purposes are volunteers do get to access those weapons, as i mentioned. But we’re not using it as a part of our training, training, training or? No, not yet. Okay. What other weather tools were you? Did you did you evaluate? Ah, when we looked at blackmore cola and going black were collaborate. We looked at about five or six other ones along the way. A lot of the weapon our tools are or were flash based use flash which for people with disabilities, especially the vision and disabilities. A screenwriter flash could be a real problem. Some flash is accessible, but a lot of them they just get like this. You know, there is an apple it here and have nobility that control. Click the buttons. No was going on at all. So for us, that really narrowed the scope quite. Quickly, um, when that is something, the tools are really not accessible toe portion of our users. Okay, why don’t you just name name you name a couple of them that you’ve got because others, you know, others may not have the disability population that you have. Yeah, yeah, one the ones we looked at was ah, adobe connect, um course, adobe flash based like, not not a big surprise there. Um, we did look at the goto webinar meeting, but i didn’t kind of have that like that back in ability to manage a bunch of different rooms and set it up. Um, i think what else we did look a big blue button when we chose black work elaborate, but it was very it was very new at the time, like it wasn’t polished, they know there’s a missing certain features at that time that have come along since then. Um, i’m not i i did try to use likes on google, plus hangouts that can i duck tape some skype sessions together sort of thing, but that i didn’t have this sort of a mean in the back and that, though one of the kind of quality control things that we have with the black work collaborate is all the weapon our sessions. We have set for one, one tutoring to record. So if ever there is a complaint like, hey, you know, he was offensive to me, or he wrecks something, our blob of law, we can actually look at the recording and for the investment to is great cause they could go back. They could wash it archives. So they showed him, like, oh, how’d they get my pictures off my phone? And what did i do when i’m missing? They can actually watch that recording of class of that learning material stays with them before. No. Okay, if you were going to do like aa one toe one sort of tutoring again, the reason i chose weber thinks i fifth of multiple different learning programs. We haven’t organization. If you’re just going to a one to one tutoring, i think you could go with this guy sort of thing that another great tool is teamviewer it’s. Super low cost. It works like on your phone to connect or whatever. So, you khun connect on sloane’s computer pretty easily through that. So that that’s another to live sometimes uses back back and support in-kind of game thing. Set up a second cents on a length or they can kill, like click instantly. I can see their desktop of screen allows me to, like, fix their audio settings or, you know, once the spyware tools or whatever, like, try to get the computer. So it’s healthy enoughto tulani teamviewer teamviewer teamviewer. Yeah. Yeah. Okay. Wait a couple more minutes together. What else? What else have i not ask you about that? You want to share around this whole idea of volunteer training? A virtual volunteer training? What else? We got it covered. I think i might have. Mentioned this a little bit, but just to expand on it. One of the riel awareness is i had when i was preparing our presentation was i was thinking about are we did a program evaluation in two thousand fifteen, and one of the things that came out of that is that a lot of our volunteers have said it would be really great to have a level one training similar to the level to training and there’s no specific training for level ones, and i went well, no, they’re actually is it’s just a emmanuelle that you’re not using, and it really spoke to the fact that when we have such a distance between us and when we have different sites in different locations and different staff members that are working with the volunteers in order to have consistency, having the online training is a really key piece of the puzzle for us, like having the ability to have everything connected, everybody connected to the same piece of the same time really gives the opportunity for the volunteers to be on the same page no matter where they’re located. Yeah, chad, this idea of connectedness totally, yeah, i couldn’t. Agree more, and it really allows, like to grow the impact of, like you’re working your organization, right? Not everyone that you want to serve or that could help you, and further your mission lives in a five minute drive or short bus ride away, right? So really allowed us to go from ah very successful award winning program was delivered at our office to something where doesn’t matter something disability isn’t able to get out of bed or that they live in a rural town and have difficulties. Transportation like we can really meet the person where they are through using these tools, right? And so it really grows are impacting allows us to in-kind scale at a really small cock, i felt like i was going to open a new classroom somewhere, you know, rent light internet like you knows tons of the cost of that right or for me to, like, deliver connected sametz computer home is, you know, just the price, my weapon or to one, it doesn’t cost me more to add another weapon, our room, right? So it really allows us to scale or impact at minimal to no additional cost kottler let’s talk. A little more about something you mentioned earlier. If you’re around open source that it’s not gonna be reliable, whatever it is sabotaged, you know, wherever deep fears run, where can we lay some of these concerns? Yeah, i’ma hoping that that that’s been put to rest those promotion, every web server runs on a limb it’s background, a tip ashy, both open source tools. You know, it’s an allows things to grow beyond the control of one sort of corporation. Anything along the way, right? The world is big and beautiful, there’s lots of smart people that contribute add things along the way. So i personally feel that when you close your walls, you’re closing yourself to innovation and and to the community. Right? So it doesn’t dahna it’s a model that i prefer to support, the open sources, can i connect people to grow and there’s created huge culture like around model. There are tons of different plug ins that people have built along the way is with learning management piece is like solid and totally works. You could build things for it. We built and releases shared les screenwriter so, like, if you get anyone can add it to the site and it just allows you got texas page there’s a play but beside it so you can listen to it. So that means different learning styles, different disability needs and sometimes, like, you don’t really want to read like the twenty pages again, like, just play any kind of listened through it, right? So that’s, just like one examples on that we’ve built it was a huge community that built like different sort of layers for the pages are different toolbars, so it really allows things kind of grow abandoned and meet more people’s needs as well. So actually open source, you’re you’re a fan so far. Yes, i have to admit i’m very new to kind of a lot of the tech things and i’m not very tight check knowledgeable, but what our experience with open source has been has been fantastic and as somebody who is relatively new to the to the tech side of things, i look at it as something that is easy to customize and therefore easy for us to learn and adapt and get what we need out of the open source dahna it’s actually valuable, you know that you’re not you don’t have a tech the tech background yet. It’s. Not anxiety producing for you, you know you’re not. You’re not afraid of it. No. Like a minute left. What do you want to leave people with around this idea of virtual volunteer training? Actually, what do you want to wrap up? Our volunteers in our organization are the most valuable asset that we have their amazing, and they deserve to have the best opportunity to get the training in the knowledge and the education, and we feel that providing it through technology has really benefited our volunteers. Yeah, i would say in doing some things online, you can actually do things that you totally couldn’t do, like in a classroom like having ah, pulling on there are having that sort of recording and playback having options to kind of share screens are too around websites the chat box, right? Like, you know, when you’re in your typical class was like i don’t pass notes that’s totally flipped in a webinar like there’s a chatterbox, and i encourage people like to share our comment and how they feel comfortable, right? Maybe someone doesn’t feel comfortable like having their voice heard, but the type of messages feels safer for them, for whatever reason, our love like a lower buried entry, so a lot of people think. That all you know, when you start introducing technology on going at a greater distance that you, you’re losing something, but i think you’re also gaining a lot along the way and opens a lot of possibilities. Just tell me, what do you love about the work that you’re doing? Um, i will well, i’ll give you the short version, but when i was going to university for computer science, it came apparently pretty quick that was never going to be the smartest nerd in the room at all, so i had the opportunity to do like a summer internship at the kneel squire society, and and that really resonates me. We’ll have the opportunity used technology to kind of help people along the way, and i’ve had loss of amazing opportunity to kind of do that in other settings. I’m on a couple different boards now that how technology helping education helped run a local group of vancouver that helps non-profits use technology so falik technology can help people and change lives is like a really sweet spot for me to kind of use that nerdy part of my brain. I don’t want to be a coder and a cubicle for the rest of my life but helping people and helping the allies to technologies, presidents latto actually, what do you love about your work? I started as a volunteer with the organization. I fell in love with the organization and with our mission in her vision and just want to keep working towards making a sexual health accessible to everybody. Nbc and our volunteers. Part of the tail end of the boomer generation. She lives on the east coast of the us the-whiny-donor serves on the board development committee’s of two non-profits in the city where she lives. The-whiny-donor welcome to non-profit radio. Thank you very much. How are you? I’m great. How are you doing? I’m fine. Thank you. Wonderful man. You mind if i call you whiny? Is that or you can call me whiny? Okay, miss miss donor-centric formal way, right? I like informality on non-profit radio and okay, whiny um what do you about? Their why? Why? Why do you exist in this persona? Well, it’s, the reason that i exist, i guess it’s, because sometimes i just need teo to rant about things that come in the mail with direct mail and tweeting gives me an outlet to express my frustrations and irritations network for good had something to do with your your existence? Yeah, the way. The-whiny-donor came about wass several years ago, i, um i was an avid reader of network for good non-profit marketing block, which was at the time written by cacho anderson and i had just joined development committee’s so as a volunteer, i was very interested in what she had to say, and i was learning a lot, and so i emailed her one day with a couple of things that had happened to me as a donor, thinking that she might want to address them, and she turned my email into a blogged, which turned out to be very well received by her fund-raising readers so i realized that there was a man on audience that fundraisers actually did want to hear the perspective of people that were receiving what they were sending out. And so twitter was an easy way to have my voice heard, and so i’ve been tweeting for a little over three years and having fun with it, alright, now way want listeners to know that you’re not a professional fundraiser, right? You’re right, we’re not at all inspector, purely a volunteer, and so i i don’t know any of the sort of hard core things. That fund raisers do. I’ve never worked with razors edge. I’ve never had to send out a mailing myself as a volunteer involved in development committee’s, i’ve been on fund-raising campaigns, but never the person that actually have to do the hard work in the office. All right, so you’re you’re you’re generating awareness, though, of the donor-centric reesing awareness not like right now, what i hope to do in my tweets, besides just venting, is giving the perspective of the person who is receiving the appeals. I think sometimes when the staff person is sending things out, they may not really be thinking they know what their agenda is, they need to have they have a message that they need to get out there trying to raise a certain amount of money, whatever, whatever not understanding how the donor feels that the end merry callon, had a really good quote in a block post last week, she said, don’t put the ease of your inside operations above the weapon you make your donors feel and which i thought was great, because, um, you may have a certain, you know, the way your database works, you want to do it. This way well, that may not be the way that i want my information presented in mary’s case she uses her maiden name. And so if if if it’s convenient for the non-profit to use mr and mrs, that doesn’t work for her so and the non-profit may never have thought about the fact that there are people that are actually taking a fence at some thing that they’re doing. So i hope that in my tweets somebody will say, oh, well, that never occurred to me that that might be a problem for somebody. So, yeah, i hope that that my tweets may occasionally cause a lightbulb moment in somebody who works for a nonprofit. Okay, okay, um, whining i’m just going to fix you up on one thing everybody knows her on twitter is mary calais. Nor but it’s actually, mary kalon rhymes. Okay, sorry. Rhymes with salon. No, no. Ah, good to know. I never knew that. I just have not met her. I just read her avidly and i’ve had the benefit of having her on my other show fund-raising fundamentals that i do for the chronicle. Right, lance? All right, it’s kalon. So just you. Know, i don’t want people thinking that the-whiny-donor has all the answers and one hundred grams clearly i don’t know everything and you’re you’re clear about that to know all right, all right, cool the donor perspective and you like to thank people to this is not all a negative twitter stream you’re you’re very gracious in a lot of time saying you’re thank you came quickly or what a beautiful birthday card i got etcetera, your compliment right and well on another thing that i do on twitter it’s that i do share good content now that i know how to pronounce her name, marries content it always very good she’s, particularly donor-centric and there’s a whole bunch of people on twitter that really are, you know, there’s a whole new hashtag donor love and it’s that donor-centric city, and so i do like to share that content. Um, twitter is a great resource, i think not only do i get to tweet my own stuff, but i have learned so much from reading other people’s content that has informed the way i perform as a volunteer for the organizations that i’m involved in. So i love twitter when you, uh, when you give and we just have about a minute or so before first break you give you you feel very vulnerable, you’re you’re sending a piece of you exactly. There some donations are purely transactional, but there are certain organizations that i give to that i feel very personal about there’s, a crisis agency locally that i give to every year because my brother has needed crisis intervention, so when i give to that organization, it feels extremely personal. I’ve sent a piece of my heart to that organization, so when we do that, we really we want to, we wanted to be noticed it’s not trust transactional, thank us enthusiastically for it. We may really feel personally invested in in why we’re sending to your mission. All right, we’re gonna go out for ah break and come back one day and i will continue talking will get into some of her specifics. Dahna oppcoll with the-whiny-donor we’re talking about her her most urgent wines on de eso eso let’s ah, whiny, let’s get let’s, get into some some details because this is this is what you’re known for on twitter, let’s, start us off with something that’s like, you know, your your your top? What what really irks you the most? Uh, there’s a couple things that hurt me the most, and people that read my tweets? No, that i do pay attention to how long it takes an organization to thank me. Um, my husband and i usually sit down sometime in december, last week of november, early december and right out about a dozen checks and send them to organizations, and so they’re all dropped in the mail at the same time. So it’s very clear which organizations are thanking quickly and the ones who thank me within about certainly within a week, while i’m still feeling that glow e-giving i’m impressed by that, um, this time around, i one organization didn’t send a thank you for about six weeks and that’s very noticeable when every other one has already come in and yours lags by about two or three weeks it’s pretty obvious, who was very slow on the uptake with their acknowledgement letters, you know, let me let me just say, just, you know, to relate this to what you said you, you know, you feel like you’re giving a piece of your heart, you said, right? So that’s, very vulnerable, and if you’re not thanked for many weeks, right, how does that leave you feeling? Uh, it makes me feel that you didn’t really need my donation in the first place, that it wasn’t really appreciated, and by then i’ve already sort of almost moved on, you know, i think that there is there’s a sweet spot when you thank somebody where we’re still in the glow of e-giving i sent it off, i’m feeling really good about it, and if you get me back when i’m still really a met feeling good about it, stage, i think that that probably reinforces my glow of clip e-giving whereas if you’re six weeks later, i’m already kind of ticked at you and it’s just not a good thing. Teo and worse, of course, is never hearing from the organization, but but a very late acknowledgement just by the time it comes you’re kind of like, well, finally for i am yeah, you ah, in december, you tweeted something about an organization that cashed your check very fast, but the previous year they have been very slow to thank you, right? And that was an organization, that particular organization actually i had to call them because they were doing a high frequency appeal strategy, and i can’t imagine why that works. And also let me preface everything that i say in my tweets it’s my opinion, i don’t offer expert advice so clearly high frequency appeals work for people. I can’t imagine why, because i find them cortly annoying, but this particular organization was doing the high frequency appeal strategy and i had gotten to more appeals from them before i finally got shanked for my check last year, and i ended up calling the organization and saying, look, i can’t stop sending me so many appeals. So oddly enough, the only option that they could give me was all oer one mailing a years. Of course, i took one mailing a year. What? The high frequency was just it was awful. Are you still supporting that organization? I do, and that’s the thing that’s so frustrating when organizations do something that i find actually offensive, but it’s an organization that i want to continue to support. So, yes, we do still support that organization because i guess one reason why i called them to say, look, stop irritating me with the high frequency of people’s because i did want to keep supporting them. You like them well enough to try to make it work, right? What they’re doing, their mission is extremely important. If you didn’t feel that affinity to their work, you would have just written him off and not called exactly exactly you feel. In fact, it was funny when i told the woman over the phone that her that her organization’s appeal was the last one acknowledgment was the slowest one to get to me out of about a dozen she was really surprised. Ah, in fact, she was kind of dumbfounded, and i don’t know why because they were really slow with their acknowledged letters. All right? Do you recall what she apologetic? Oh, yeah, she was very gracious and i was gracious over the phone. I didn’t, you know, in real life, i’m actually quite the life i have to take your word for that some of it comes across one hundred forty characters, but but it’s it’s probably good that you reinforce it. Alright, right, let’s. See you also. Ah, you also have some wines about donation pages. You mean the reply forms? No dahna online, the online donation pages i don’t do a lot of of oh yeah paper. Well, paypal is kind of difficult. They’re very small organizations that can’t afford better whatever and, you know, so they just do the papal and you and you all you get is a transactional receipt. Your payment of such and such was given to paypal, and it sucks the joy out of it. But you can understand where their why they’re doing that. They don’t have the money, yeah, to develop their own page. Or maybe they’re not there. I’ll bet. Amy sample word may wantto come in on this in the second half, but there are there are payment systems that are not papal that are probably low cost or free for non-profits on dh, they may not, you know, smaller organizations, unfortunately, you’re just not aware, you know, they’re just they’re not. Aware of a lot of tools that are out there so people defected to the big gorilla, you know, with paypal, right? And of course, that’s one of the things because i am not a fundrasing professional, you know, i’m sure that if people in the fund-raising community read my tweets and hear what i’m complaining about, they probably say, oh, come on, she’s a third asking for that kind of service when we don’t have the ability to do that, but as a donor, i don’t know any of that, so i’m expecting something without having any idea what kind of work it takes to put out a website or in donation page or get an acknowledgement letter out on time. Yeah, you are not familiar with the inner workings of a development office the different exactly. I have no clue departments, officer’s service donor, and so my expectations are very high even though my expectations may be completely unrealistic. That’s still how i feel and i would imagine, you know, and i’m reasonably sophisticated. I have some level of knowledge about what happens in a development office, but a lot of donors don’t, so all right, let me go, teo, let me go to one of yours. That that i thought was rather high expectation you tweeted about the heat being up too high in in a non-profit office. You know, that tweet was really tongue in cheek, and it was to the controversy about the wounded warrior project and overspending. And again that’s something that’s completely subjective. How does a donor in your overhead costs are legitimate and when you’re wasting money? So? So that was tongue in cheek. But it was in reaction to the controversy about the wounded warrior project. Okay, i my apology for that one. I didn’t. I missed the context of that. Okay? One hundred forty characters. I couldn’t put it in-kind context, but it was it was in reaction to that. Okay. That’s. Good. All right, so you’re not that unreasonable. No, gosh, no, not not that. Unreasonable. What else you got? Throw out something else that that irks you? Well, let’s. See, um, appeals that don’t recognize that i’ve given before. Oh, yeah, you know, or or of course, dear friend and that’s. Another thing i’ve noticed, actually, sometimes it the smallest non-profits that are the worst of doing that. With the dear friend, maybe they just don’t maybe they don’t have a development person on staff, but you would think that with the very small organizations they’d be able to personalize more somehow, i have no idea how that kind of thing works, but if i’ve given before, if i partnered with you for many years, i think you should acknowledge that in your letter that you know, i’ve been with you for a long time, or i gave last year or whatever, but when i get an appeal letter that has not acknowledged that i’ve given before i noticed that recognize that i’ve been with you for a while. Your husband got one from his alma mater that was a dear friend. Yes, that’s very surprised. Yeah. There’s there’s. No way. I mean, among any level of education, i don’t know with elementary middle high hyre ed that really that’s an inexcusable one. Well, and i stopped giving to my own altum otter because and i was never giving them very much money. So i was never. I never reached the level of where i got any good donorsearch stewardship. I was just one of the masses in the small donors, but, um, i got one acknowledgement receipt sort of letter thing that said, dear college supporter, i have been giving to them consecutively for twenty three years, and i thought, for heaven’s sakes, if you haven’t figured out my my name by now, you really don’t need my donation, and i have not given them anything since then. Well, that’s yeah, i mean, they certainly know your name that’s a that’s a method of keeping mailing costs very low because i know it was this particular thing was sort of a receipt receipt with a letter attached, and so the receipt had my name on it with the notation that i’ve been given for twenty three consecutive years, so it was just a question of i mean, they have it in their database with there i don’t i don’t know how you merge fields and all of that, but they could have put my name very easily on that sheet of paper. Yeah, and they didn’t bother just just to explain, i mean, it’s it’s a method of keeping costs lower because if they have to pay the printer assuming and i’m assuming high volume, but if they have to pay a male house to produce letters that are personalized, as well as receipts that a personalized, each personalized item increases the cost of a of a mailing. So if you, if you print it, if they print your name on the outer envelope versus having a windowed envelope, that takes advantage of the inside address on the letter that that costs more on, of course, that’s the kind of thing that the donor doesn’t know. All i knew was that i had been giving it to them for twenty three years, and and they didn’t use my name. I understand, ok, ok, your perspective, the donor perspective. That’s. Exactly what we’re gonna do is purely my perspective, understand? Um, you got a little disenchanted in in real life when you went to make a donation to your local thrift shop. Oh, yeah? What? You mean when there were so many things i wanted for a twenty foot pile? Exactly. I think that’s the result of the khan mari method book that was so successful lighting everybody’s de cluttering anything that doesn’t spark joy. And so the thrift shops air overwhelmed. Um, but yeah. Ah, that was an example of doing something, giving something and realizing they really didn’t need what i was taking. Suck the joy out let’s. Suck the joy out of it again. Sucked the joy. Right? So maybe thrift shops. And for those who have thrift shops, you know, maybe you want teo conceal that pile, not have the drop off area where the pile is, right. Okay, you know, possibilities dahna perspective. Um, you, uh you well, you want to you want to throw another one out? You got something that you want to whine about? Uh, boring. Thank you. Please use a few exclamation points in the thank you. Like i said, you know, as we noted, i sent my heart out to you. Respond with enthusiasm. This was not a business transaction for me. I like exploration points. So thank you so much for your donation whiny, exclamation, exclamation that’s! All right, but there are people who would disagree with that and say, you know, the exclamation mark is overused and particularly, if you know it’s okay, maybe online and tweeting and emailing, but but to have that transcend too u s mail is inappropriate and bad grammar and ah and bad punctuation, and we shouldn’t we shouldn’t be doing that. So i’m sure you’re well, i’m never into bad punctuation, but an exclamation point well placed, i think can make a difference. Okay, you did have ah, an example of bad punctuation that that hurt you when your was incredible. Your wasn’t i’ve been all over your feet, you know, this is this your was incorrectly dunaj a reply envelope, right? This organization sent out a reply envelope and the idea was good by putting your generous gift makes a difference except that instead of y o ur, it was y o u apostrophe r e. So when it first came the first time it came, i laughed about it. I’ve been a copywriter. We’ve all sent out things with mistakes and just been mortified, but i mocked it. But you know that. Was fine, but the problem was they sent it out in another mailing, and so either they haven’t noticed or didn’t care that they were sending something out with such poor grammar on it, and i did end up sending the envelope back because i intended to support this organization, but i couldn’t resist crossing it out and correcting their grammar, so i can’t imagine a company that a non-profit that would know that they have that kind of error on their reply envelope and still send it out. Now, i’ve, as a professional fundraiser, i’ve been on the receiving end of those types of corrections, et cetera, sometimes they sometimes they come with snarky comments. Was there a comment that you did you associate? You put a comment next to your correction? No, all i did was corrected, and i thought, you know, did you highlight it? Somebody’s already pointed this out, but if they haven’t, they need to know that this envelope is startlingly wrong. Okay, but you didn’t say that you didn’t have that is a comment no, i just crossed it out and corrected the word you didn’t you didn’t highlight it in with a marker. A yellow highlighter know i’ve gotten those two. Okay. All right. So sort of. Ah, an alternative to the exclamation mark yellow highlights. And then underlying with pink, you know, framed, framed in red. Right. All right, all right. All right. Um, what else you got? You want to throw another one out? Uh, let’s. See, uh, goes reply envelopes where you have to fill out the flap? I don’t like those, but the funny thing is, i was i was complaining about this with a group of friends, and they said, oh, we never even bothered to fill those out. We’ve just enclosed our check and let the organization figure it out and i thought, oh, that never occurred to me. I i i’m very compliant. I fill out my reply form, so i don’t know how the organization’s feel about it when people are just enclosing checks without bothering to fill things out, i would think that the organization would want people filling out those flaps. Your friends don’t hate those those those particular flap envelope i don’t like where the flap is the form that yeah, yeah. And you have to fill the whole thing out it. Hasn’t been filled out for you in december when i was filling out, you know, a dozen all at once, it was like it was the reply forms that were already filled out and nicely done. That made me feel good about those those organizations, they filled it out for you. You have pre filled right, but that cost them now going back to when i get that cost them yes, it actually cost him more than leaving a blank. Yes, right. You got a little embarrassed by something stamps, crooked stamps. Yes. I tweeted very starkly about mailing that i’d gotten where the stamps have been put on wrong and i so i sent out this snarky little tweet about meeting to have straight stamps, and somebody replied and said that it has probably been done in a sheltered workshop, which of course, made me feel terrible on now. I hope that i get lots of things with crooked stamps because obviously i would i would love it if people were using sheltered workshops to do that thing. So that’s also the beauty of twitter is that people do respond to me and put me in my place and explained to me that this is why organisations they’re doing what they’re doing. So i learned a lot that way. Let’s, let’s wrap up. We just have a minute left. You loved the birthday card that you got from your local? Why, yes, just in a minute. Why? Because it it was a it was a nice design, but also the message said something about may your day or maybe coming year be filled with the same wonderful things that you’ve done that your donation has done for people here. It’s just really nice and had a cupcake on it. Yes, it did. So the filling the cupcake? And, uh, you got some? You got some rants? Yeah, it was exciting and a little scary that i put out the call the staff and very, very quickly, you know, the floodgates opened and people even commented, i didn’t realize i had so many complaints and let me start complaining. So we’ve got a lot from all the different intense, okay, let’s, see where we go? Let’s, uh, since we were with the the-whiny-donor why don’t we start with twitter? Yeah, okay, well, i think we’ve got a lot on twitter and i think twitter because other platforms have kind of followed, followed suit, you know, over time, other platforms introduced hashtags, for example, so some of these things trickle over into other platforms, but i think most folks here and tenet lee still consider them core twitter complaints, so a few of those are based in the world of bach and all of the content on twitter that is just totally automatic through little plug ins and box that people have enabled on their profiles and staff could have gone on for days about bots and how much they like them. Yeah, i think i wonder if twitter is just going to be you know, in five years, it’s going to be a bunch of butts talking to each other. Thank you. Thank you. Want teo talking to itself? Welcome, welcome. Thank you for following commune dot. Thank you for all you know, they’re totally some of the examples staff brought up the things that you automatically tweet to you or that automatically send you a direct message. A private message saying, you know, thanks for following. And i was laughing when the-whiny-donor was complaining about those generic messages that say, you know, fund-raising appeal that just says, do your friend, you know, please donate when people are trying to use these boss on twitter to create some weird level of personalization, but it’s twitter, you know how many of us can write out our full name in our account or, you know, a lot of people just have ah kind of shortened abbreviation. So then you’re getting these these direct messages as if their personal but they’re not they’re from a body that say, you know hi, amy rs lorts all in one word, you know, please go check out our website and donate like, what is this is so weird? Stop. Stop the bottom! I see the ones i see the ones was, you know, have a good and then there’s like too many spaces. And then it’ll say friday, and then there’s another couple spaces and a period like they they have to leave room for the longest day of the week, which i don’t know what which has the most letters, but like friday is a short one, so it doesn’t, you know it’s just it’s weird, but i think you know, there’s another there there’s the the complaints that we can have about box where it just feels weird or the content doesn’t make sense. Or, you know, it’s obviously not personalized, but staff also brought up a number of examples where people have, you know, it’s, not it’s, not the same whereabouts kind of tweeting at people for you, but the body is making it so that your account is automatically replying to other people or automatically retweeting certain accounts. So there’s people who have said, you know, any time this other account tweets, i wantto retweet it, but there’s no contacts there, so literally anything that account tweets you’re now re tweeting, that doesn’t work well. I mean, that’s, obviously waiting for disaster to enjoying zoho had what’s that, like, enjoying my birthday today, you know, which is not is not the greatest tweet, but, you know, a bunch of friends for my birthday, you know, getting together for my birthday today. I mean, you know, i could i could tolerate some that’s personal stuff, but, you know, to retweet that, right? It’s, ludicrous it’s, right, that you have other people just automatically re tweeted someone else’s you ran from personal tweet, but the other example, you know, where, where, but are going to make you look really bad? You know, if you’re automatically tweeting or replying to people’s content so i’ve seen this trend now where folks have enabled bots to say, like, you know, oh, you are my my highest engaged, but, you know, follower this week or my no thanks for the retweet on this, it got the most retweets or, you know, those kind of it’s like sharing stats somehow like it’s a competition, and we’ve seen, you know, in ten content for example, it’s, we don’t like that these occasions happen, and we do post this content, but when community member passes away, we will post about whatever happened and provide some honorarium language and, you know, allow for a lot of community members to find out the news from from their own community, which normally means a number of community members right in with their memories and, you know, it’s it’s, a very sad but touching opportunity to kind of bring the community together on dh grieve a community member who’s pass, but because people in the community have these bots turned on, it means a post that is sharing memories of a community member that’s now gone will be turned into tweets that say, you know, thanks for sharing that great post. It was my highest one this week or something, and that feels so horrible, you know? But again, you’re just leaving the body. They’re not gonna have any contacts, the body’s not going to turn off when it’s not appropriate it just put your account into a bad place, you know? It just does what you’re telling it to do. Yeah, there’s one osili i don’t want to appear to be a hypocrite, there’s one that i i use and i continue it because people like it. I get lots of likes and are they still know that what they’re called now favorites on? Is it likely i entertain their word? Yeah, is it likes now our favorite? I don’t know, but the heart when the heart goes on and people and people do react to this one it’s the one with its clear because i label it i mean it’s labeled by commune dot i t i don’t, i think it’s kind of dishonest if you pay the have that that tag taken off so that it looks supposed to look real, but so it says courtesy or, you know, thanks to community or from community and it’s the one that says you’re you’re the you’re the, um you’re the new follower with that’s the highest rated or so are the most popular new follower this week or something like that, and i didn’t like it because it looks phony, but people like people who get it like it. Who people who are named in it, they favored it, and sometimes they are t it now, not too often with the artie’s, but it gets lots of it gets lots of favorites, even though it’s blatantly from community on my stream so that’s, why i that’s why i think you’re welcome you’re welcome, teo use the tools however you would like there will be no inten staff person harding or re tweeting that post people like it. So you know, if there if there along with me on twitter and they like it, that’s, why i’ve kept it up, but i don’t want to be hypocrite, not not make that explicit, all right? Yeah, okay, let’s see, maybe i think, you know, leaving the world of body, um, talking and of course, like i said before, super big on twitter, but of course you’re going to see examples of boss on other platforms to but again, another piece that’s big on twitter and we see going elsewhere, but that staff are just driven crazy, crazy by our when people basically turned their entire post into a hash tag like every word is a hashtag or you know, it is one long one hundred forty character hash tag that’s trying to be a sentence because hashtags are meant to provide context to your post, right? And they’re meant to connect that content you’re posting into a stream. Of similar content, right? It’s it’s a topic this is anything related to non-profit radio so when your entire poster hashtags, it implies that you have nothing else to say other than i would like to be an account visible in lots of random streams. So if you’re not providing any message, you’re just you’re just dragging it into lots of spaces let’s, do one more on twitter, the the follow on follow-up follow dance oh, god that’s the harsh one and, you know, i think a part of that is i’ll get the notification that somebody has followed me, i look at their account and i choose to not follow them back and then they tweet me, you know? Hey, i would love to connect with you the very first time they do that, i say, okay, well, it’s not hard to find how to contact me on the internet, you know, you here’s my e mail address feel free to reach out and then they don’t know that i don’t hear anything more from them and then a month goes by, i get a notification that they followed me and they send the exact same tweets saying i would like to check with you. So at that point, i tried to give them the benefit of the doubt that they were a human. But now it seems that they are not trying to act that way. So in the meantime, they done followed you and then followed you back to try to get your attention. Exactly. You again followed you again. Yeah. Yeah, i know. And that’s, you know, that’s enabled by technology. I know it. And ten, you recognize that technology has a downside to that’s enabled by men i get. I get these weekly emails. People who want followed you. The new followers you have here is this the stupid people who want followed you and and you’re and they’re not follow you. You follow and they’re not following you back or something, you know? Please, i delete that nonsense. I should turn it off. It’s gotta be a it’s. A it’s. An option. I chose somewhere. Uh, tell you what i think. I think it can be turned off because i turned that off a long time ago. Because, you know, to your point, it just makes it feel like it’s. Kind of like when? We’ve talked in the past about vanity metrics. Yes, because it as the platform, whatever platform is every platform, is going to try and force these things upon you. Just because it’s highlighting something doesn’t mean it’s actually the most important aspect of that bull, you know, making an action an action item just because they’re highlighted exactly, exactly. Meghan contributed some things about instagram what’s she got to say there megan had lots of complaints about instagram, primarily that you can only post from your phone when you know, i think from a lot of organizations perspective we’re normally scheduling all kinds of pieces of content right across the internet on different days or around different campaigns and feeling like, okay, i’ve got my computer open where i’m tweeting and posting the facebook and doing everything else, but then i have to go get my phone, make sure i’m logged in, you know, and posted this from my phone, which i think the root of some of that complaint is that posting anything from your phone on behalf of the organization, just like exponentially increases the potential that you’re goingto spell things wrong because we all have experienced auto correct on our phones. So so she really wishes that she could post from her computer to instagram, but staff staff sent around a lot of fake instagram captions that were all hashtags thing. I think instagram is very much a world where people go crazy with because unlike twitter, that at least is stopping how many characters you can use instagram just let you keep adding more hashtags. You know, i’ve got friends of mine and that they are my friends, so i don’t want to get get disconnected from them. But, you know their instagram post included like i swear it must be things that they’re just seen out their window. I don’t know how they’re coming up with, you know, just word what you don’t know what the relationship of the weak things they had back-up list that aren’t even in the post, you know, it’s, just like anything that comes to mind, word association becomes a hashtag ah let’s, go to aa, we want to thank meghan, where at the end we’re going to shut out all the contributors. Okay, okay, but let’s go let’s, go to ah, facebook, you got some ideas on facebook? Naturally. Oh, yes, i think facebook, we see some of the boss that we talked about earlier, but the big thing on facebook that folks were complaining about is the relationship between twitter and facebook and organisations thinking that they’re somehow saving themselves time by making it so. Anything they posted facebook, you know, automatically goes to twitter or vice versa. Anything from twitter goes to facebook, but they’re different channels. You have different members of your community in those two different spaces. You know, we’ve talked about all this before. It shouldn’t be the same message, but further, you don’t want to tweet that’s literally just a facebook link to a post because it doesn’t even say anything and under quitter, you know, it’s literally just did you are el facebook, dot com slash whatever, right? So that was a huge a huge no, no, that staff talked about was that cross posting and who knows what? Um and then, of course, ash brought up something that we do see all the time, by people and by organizations, and that is, you know, this knowledge or or assumption that posts on facebook do better if there’s a picture. So we better go find a picture and they just pull a picture off the internet that still has, you know, stock photography still has a watermark because it’s not just, you know, and they’re just hoping that they can crop it out and it looks ok, but there. It is, you know, looking looking. Totally stolen. Yeah, right. Blatant self with the watermark removed. Yeah. Yeah. Okay. Megan, had megan had one about our fitbits? Oh, gosh, yeah. I mean, make it megan kind of wrote a longer message are longer rant to everybody about this, but ultimately those kind of a different world of boss, i guess where people are enabling their phone or different apse that they used tto auto pose all of this personal data about themselves to facebook so it just automatically posting, you know, i just walked half a mile and now i’m a starbucks. Great will all track you down. Why are you why are you enabling all of this personal data sharing just to be automated all the time? You know, that was a huge, huge ran turn that off. I mean, that’s an option, right? When you buy a fitbit it’s gotta be when yes, definitely and turn that nonsense off if we wait if we didn’t, if this was only a podcast and we’ve we didn’t have affiliate versions, i would i would have said something stronger than nonsense. But e i can’t i can’t say it because we’re governed by fcc rules on the affiliate side let’s go to ah let’s goto linked in okay endorsements, yeah, lengthen thie endorsements we had an interesting conversation with staff because ah lot of the things that we were complaining about are not necessarily the way you know you are. I are using the tool, but the way that lincoln has set the tool up for us to even be able to use it. So one of the biggest complaints was that any time you’re on the site, unless you kind of go to someone’s profile and click that you want to connect with them and are able to write a message anywhere else, it has that button, you know, connect with this person, you click it and it never it just sends a message. It just sent that generic, you know, with you only dinner, whatever. So there’s no, the the platform itself doesn’t even allow you to share a message or say, hey, i’m the one you met at the conference. Yes, today or high, i’m a really human and i would like to talk to you, you know? It just sends these automatic messages, which make it feel make it feel like now people aren’t going to know if you’re for real or what your intentions are, you know, there is a way, right? Like you said, you have to make the effort to send a personalised invitation to connect, yeah, exactly, lets on. And then we went down a rabbit hole about lincoln talking about endorsements. All right, we got to do this one your time, lengthen it, try and suggest that, you know, i endorse you, tony, for random words or tags, essentially and staff we’re talking about things that they have been endorsed for by people who have never worked with them, that, you know, they’re not they’re connected to on lengthen because maybe they know who they are, but it’s not like they’re a colleague who’s saying, oh, you know, tony, it worked with you on the radio show for two years. I would totally say that you’re really great at that or great interviews or whatever it might be, but someone who’s just met you, you know, shouldn’t be endorsing you for things, and then staff were saying, you know, best any one of our ten staff members has been endorsed multiple times. For cat, you know he doesn’t work in veterinary and any work we got a way, we got to leave it there. We’re gonna leave it there, but let me give a shout out tio dan and meghan and ash ash, by the way, clout. I can’t stand clout. Thank you for pointing that one out. Just just burn it. Welcome to the show. Thank you very much for having pleasure. You’re calling from west coast where you are. You in san francisco? I’m weird. Go our national office. Okay, cool. Tell me about eight to six. You know you goingto more detail than i did. Please what’s eight, two, six all about this literary and arts training for kids. What are we doing there? I’m sure you know our organization is really engaged in helping students enjoy and create a love of writing. So we work with about thirty two thousand students every year on creative, expository and technical writing through workshops through cloudgood work with we do teachers in classrooms and through our centers in the city that were in. And if you don’t know, our model is it’s different it’s a blended model for the stuff we do on site. So we have storefronts and weird, quirky storefronts that front our tutoring and writing centers. So here in san francisco, where we started, our center is a pirate supply store. So you might know is a six valentia so it’s, a pirate supply store in the front and there’s a writing center in the back for kids? Yes. The kids walk through the store to get to the i love the storefronts you have besides pirates, superheroes and magic and secret agents and what’s the one in brooklyn on the one in brooklyn. The superhero supply store. That’s a superhero’s. Okay, right. Yeah. Cool. So you have these? You have these off beat marketplace stores up front and then in the back is the writing center. That’s great that’s. Outstanding. I love how did where did that come from? The court, eastern front’s. It came from one of our co far co founder on our founder’s day vaguer than innovate clolery who? I saw a need for students in the neighbourhood here in the mission where we started that they need tutoring, help and writing support. And so but the space that they got was known for retail. So the landlords, like you, have to sell something. So they decided to because of the space and the way it looked to sell pirate supplies. Well, i love it, i love that are born of necessity. Ok, sure, we’ll we’ll sell pirate supplies if you want, but we’re going to train students in the back and teach them and have writing workshop so that’s, right? Ok, mister landlord, alright, leadership development you you see a problem among non-profits what do you see? Well, you know, i think a lot of it is that we’ve got these incredibly talented people come to us and now, you know, and i know i’m getting older and they’re getting younger, they’re coming to us and i think because of the way for some of our non-profits vessel for small non-profits structured, we don’t have a lot of opportunity or a lot of funds to be able to offer leadership, development or any other profession development to our staff. We wind up doing it either at hawk or trying to find things for people class is for people who take that might be free. Um, and we’ve got, you know, amazingly talented people who didn’t wind up if they’re not getting the professor development, they need opportunities to advance opportunities to learn they tend to leave and go elsewhere and go to other organizations, and then that hurts us because, you know, for most of us and small and medium sized non-profits you’ll have one development person, right? And imagine it one development person who’s, one of most important people in your organization leaves and you have to find a new one, or you have don’t have someone in the organization who can take over for that person or can move up the ranks and take over for that. So we need to invest in our in our people in our future is another issue out there, which is the baby boomers ceo retirement cycle coming up something like thirty percent, they’re going to retire in, i don’t know. What is it? Ten years or so, something like that? Yeah, ten year, five, ten years things have happened sooner and then the recession hit, you know latto staying but now it’s it’s looming you know this idea, this thing of people who are older people started organisations, organisations have been around for a long time will be leaving and so the next generation are we ready for that to happen? And have we train the next generation of leadership to take over that? Those spots okay, eight to six has been doing a lot of things around this now we have just about a minute and a half or so before we take a break. So i’m going to if you don’t mind, i’m gonna tease a little bit, you know, we’re going to talk a little about succession planning and job descriptions and hiring people that have more than just passion that’s important, but it’s not good enough by itself and, uh and you’re gonna tell us a little about special snowflakes, right? We’re gonna talk a little about special snowflakes that’s, right? Yes, we have r listeners checking in from asia, as always, affiliate affections if you’re listening on one of our am fm station affiliates, whatever time the station has worked us into your, uh your your schedule precisely knowing the best time for your community be listening affections out to those am and fm affiliate listeners and the podcast pleasantries, thie over ten thousand listening in the time shift, whatever you’re doing, wherever you are pleasantries to the many, many podcast listeners, we’ve got vast audiences, so we have constituents here, gerald, the way we got multiple constituents it’s good, and then we got twitter followers and you know well that everybody has those, but not everybody can send affiliate affections and podcast pleasantries, all right? So let’s, let’s get started labbate now, so we have to invest in our future leaders, and i know you’re going you’re willing to share some stuff that eight to six is doing, and then we could go a little broader beyond that, too. But you have some ideas around succession planning, you know, weird. And i was just getting we’re just getting started, okay? We’ve got some art. So i will give a great example. Is our chapter in boston a sex positive? Greater boston, bigfoot research, bigfoot research. Okay, excellent. But they had, you know, their executive director, unfortunately, is moving on. He’s been expected record for about eight, nine years. He’s moving on. But he has been grooming his successor for the past couple of three or four years. She’s been in the organization, was directive education and became the associate director. And that type of work of having the person and having them learn having them understand the organization inside. Now, there’s a thing that we need to do to have that person move up through the ranks. And she’s taking over in april that’s fantastic for us because there’s not going to be that sort of thing. Stupid knowledge is still there. And the person will understand the organization and understands the community that we work. And and the students is going to be there. So it’s fantastic for us. So across your seven chapters, you have roughly a hundred employees, right? That’s? Great. Ok. And it sounds like you you would like other chapter’s to be as proactive about succession planning as boston has been that’s, right? It would be great. I mean, even here then i was i’ll admit to it honestly, at the national office, we’ve been starting starting to think about succession for even myself just to have a plan in place. No, i joke with much i thought, you know, if i walked and i walked off and decided to move to the city tomorrow, who would who would be the person that would take over? And we’ve got some great people here, you know, on the ground, we’re doing the work, but we haven’t been very serious about it, and i think for although many of our chapters, we haven’t been serious about it all. We’re thinking about it and trying to figure out how to put the plans in place, but that’s really hard when you’re doing the day to day work and you’re in it every day, you have a lot of millennials working for eight to six what do you see? Characterizes them around? You know, they’re they’re future development there, their interests in career, you know? You know, we’ve got a lot, you know? We’re lucky, you know, we’ve got their their passionate, they love and in millennials, you know, all the researchers point to the fact that they love giving back, they love service, um and they want to support, you know, the communities they live in. So for us, it’s been great because we have these people come in and they’re really excited and how do we keep them invested, right? How do we keep them? How do you keep them happy and evolving? And i think we have to keep giving them opportunities to grow, you know, the the flipside is, of course, in the joke, and you’ll see videos and things online. Everything of many of them are many millennials will come in and go wired. I the director already i started yesterday was today, right? Yeah. Um we’ve been lucky enough that people you know, that they are i will say we ve no, it goes, it runs the gamut, right? But we’ve got people who are understanding, then wanting to learn and wanting to grow and wanting to stay here we give me now, we are lucky enough to have many people in the station’s been with us for, like, three, four, five years, so we would want to keep those people. So we’ve been working at and thinking about ways to provide professor development in town development for that. All right, so what? What are some of your thoughts you can share? You know, we right now we are looking at i don’t know if you’re listening to know it’s called non-profit ready, we’re about to join this network that has videos and, um, really profession development seminars and things online that staff can plug into it. So we’ll be plugging into that, um, this year to give staff those opportunities, we do a staff development conference every year where we bring everybody from across the network together into one of our city’s where we’re at and we bring in besides talking about what we do in sort of doing sort of the internal work of sharing best practices we bring in a lot of people from the outside. World imbriano fundraisers we bring in school, teachers, principals, we bring in educators the works to come and talk to our staff about what’s going on and providing them with frameworks and profession development tto learn so they can grow in their jobs. So that’s a big thing we do on a yearly basis and now we’re trying to improve that where it’s not just that one time of the year, but we’re trying to do it throughout the year and that people have opportunities to plug in. So do it throughout the year virtually virtually. Yeah, and then and then maybe get together physically once a year. That’s, right? Yeah, we do that once a year anyway. And but to be able to do something to provide people, could you know that it’s it’s, a very group of people and people coming to us at very different stages of where they are, you know, we get people coming directly from college and the people who worked a couple of years and so it’s with a hundred people it’s how you don’t want to give you want to get people at least things that they are interested in and that fit for where they are in the job cycle of where their life cycle is rather trying to give the baseline of, like, every, we’re all going to do the same thing because, you know, people at that point people like you’re not giving me anything i need. Yeah, and that’s when they start to depart and the network that you mentioned is that you say is non-profit ready? It’s non-profit ready, okay, you want to you want to see a lot more about what they do since you’re about to join? I’m sure you know, they we they’re run by the sea as i’m gonna get cso de foundation it’s out of los angeles and they’ve got a website and they’ve got that’s literally hundreds of videos about different, you know, on different topics is not just a charts excel like how to use excel, how to be a great manager, how to coach her staff, how to deal with difficult conversations and it’s all online, and any of our staff will be able from our landing page will be able to plug in to these videos and take advantage of them and and we can track and see. What they’re doing, what they’re looking at would be able to point them in the direction of saying someone we have that’s being well, we’ve got a staff member that might become go from being a program assistant to a program manager and might now be managing a couple people that we can point them towards this video and say, hey, you know, here’s, what? Here’s a first step of learning how to manage people and watch a video all right? Outstanding. So you are investing in development, there’s that there’s your annual conference, you think about expanding that conference and get together. So you’re paying a lot of attention to this that’s right now. All right? Um, job descriptions. You, uh you have you’ve been thinking about your your job descriptions, pulling up, getting out, you know? Ah, you pulling them together? You know, i felt when you say the special stuff like syndrome falik college, you know, we is an organic organization, right? We grew and there wasn’t the national office came after all the chapters on dso for these smart, amazing people on the ground. They had to build things from the ground up. And so our job descriptions and a lot of places are very different, but they’re the same, you know, technically the baseline that the same job, so we’re trying to get some clarity around what the jobs are and so a program assistant in one city, there might be some variation, but the program assistant in boston is doing, you know, the baseline, the same work as a program assistant in new york or programs assistant in los angeles and therefore giving our staff the opportunity since it’s the you know, we’ve got so many millennials if they want to move from an l a to boston that they know, okay, that job is going to be the same. I know what the skills i need to be. I know what the competencies r i know what i need to do to go from this job to this job that the city might be different students are different and some of the things i might have to do a different but i know at a baseline that i know what the job entails and how do you think that helps your we’ll help even even more hiring? I also would be ableto for people to come on board and to see what’s expected of me. Right? What’s what’s the job what’s what am i? What am i supposed to do? What can i do? And then also what do what skills do i need? I get in the job and then what skills? I knew howto i grow hot. I continue to grow as an employee. How do i keep how i keep moving? You know, i would look at it as you come into a job and that job and where you are, it’s not the left is not the only place you’re going to be right. Depending on where you come in, you need to be able to grow and to learn and to move through organizations. And so the hope is that someone will come. They’ll see the job but they also see the job descriptions and be able to see clarity along the lines of if i’m a program assistant here and i want to be a program director, i could grow into the job and here’s, what i need to do to get to that point now, it’s been about eighteen years since i have interviewed for a job thankfully, because i’m i’m i’m unemployable. Nobody would have me working for them. I mean, subordinate, i’m antagonistic, you know, i know the right. I know what’s, right? And you don’t so it’s better that i have my own business. But, like, eighteen years ago, you would not have asked in a job interview a za candidate. Well, where can i grow to what what’s the next what’s my progression. But is that pretty standard conversation now in interviews? I think sometimes it depends. I think, you know, you get people who i say, the people who are savvy at least this might not be in the interview. But it might be after your first year. You know, i usually i like to ask my my staff, um, after a year or so of being there. And, you know, we do our one on one meetings. I think what you want to be when you grow up, you really want to go, right? What? What? What do you want to do? And we’re in the organization. Would you like to be like, oh, and how can i help you? Or, you know, thinking about it even if they stay. And they might move somewhere else. How can i help? What skills can i help you get? All right. So so maybe it’s not in the job interview so much. Yeah, i mean, sometimes you get people who will ask, you know, i’ve had people who asked, you know, they’ll come in and they’ll go, um what, like sort of what the mobility is or where, you know, someone asked at one point like, well, you know, i’m here what if i wanted to move to another city and be, you know, moved to another two in l a somewhere else? I’ve had that happen in other places i’ve worked. And how do you evaluate that? Would you say that’s? Ah ah, positive attributes that the person is enquiring about that or that their sound like malcontent, they’re not going to be happy with the job they’re interviewing with up for, you know, the job there before, you know, i think it depends on what this been, how they if they’re savvy enough to put a spin on it, of saying that they look at the job and the organization is a place that they want to be, you know? If you have to come on board and they’re like, well, i’m applying for this job. But really, i really want that job. Well, that’s a red flag, the red flag, right? But if you get some of this asking questions about you know is their upward mobility, you know, is this a place? You know, the question. Usually what it is is a place that i can b and i can create i can build a career at. Okay. Okay, well, that’s, i agree. That’s well, put them. Yeah, it’s sounding like you know, i’m i’m committed to you. And i want to make sure that i can grow within your organization. That’s, right? That’s, right? I mean, i had one job where the person i went to my buddy’s been of the organisation for years. And i went to my boss and i said, you know, okay, where do you see me moving in the company and literally looked at me and said, i don’t well, oh, i don’t not even envy that. I don’t. It would like there’s nowhere for you to go. Yeah, and okay. Okay, well, then i should go. But that’s. Good for me. To know. Yeah, yeah. All right, all right, honest. I mean, you weren’t you weren’t being led on that right now. Okay? Okay. Um all right. So what? You know about this investment in talent and things? And there are some things, though, that you can do, like, you know, that don’t involve a lot of a lot of money. Or even i think you really liked even too much time. But there’s the learning circles creating creating a learning circle around, you know, for your peers and your network if if such a thing doesn’t exist, salem more about that? Yeah. Yeah, we do here a national office. We actually started. Ah, someone of a book club, right? To talk about different books around leadership and business. Um, give many staff not just sort of the director level staff, but all the staff an opportunity to talk about and learn from each other about what was going on in business. And then i do. I connect with a lot of other executive directors and a lot of other ceos at other non-profits which has been invaluable for me to be able tto learn and tio here. How other people deal with different issues, right of of, you know, whether they be personnel, whether they be programmatic, whether they be around fund-raising it’s just that you know, the opportunity, connect and talk to people. Um, we’re sort of within that framework of where you are, he’s, incredibly helpful, and i tell my staff all the time, you know, how do we get you connected to safer my director of field operations connected to a director of field operations and another organization or several organizations? And you can plug in and have those conversations that will help you learn more. So if this doesn’t exist in your community going created, definitely, i mean, i would think non-profit, you know, colleagues would be willing, and maybe some of them have also been scratching their heads wondering, do you? Why doesn’t this exist? Or if it did, i would join you know, you may find cem cem, sympathetic souls who been thinking the same way, but you’re the proactive one that’s, right? That’s, right? Some of my best friends are other ceos and edie’s and other organizations, and we will get together either over dinner or sometimes was over drinks many times over. Drinking. Excellent. Excellent. I love this guy. Yes, i wish you were here. We’d have a glass of wine right now, right? Okay, so so, you know, alright. If so, if there isn’t some kind of ah, learning circle or networking group, you know, whatever you wanna call it in your community, you know, reach out and create one start with, like, three or four people. And within six months, you probably have a dozen people asking you to join that’s, right? It doesn’t have to be very. You know, i think people tend to go out and they decide what we got to get, like, twenty people in that write it like three or four, you know? And we all know we need to go to conferences or we gugliotta different events and things that we meet. People, you talk to them and you always think, oh, when you’re passing on the business card it’s usually more around business rather thinking about here’s someone i might want to talk. We talk let’s go have lunch and talk like what’s on your mind. What? What challenges you have? How are how do you deal with this problem? I got this. Staffing issue or i have this fund-raising issue or this compliance issue or this local government issue. You know, how are you guys dealing with this? Right? I mean, that’s, right? Exactly. People want to be able to cut, they want to be able to connect. And i think for most part, it’s funny you will talk to people, and they’re like, i would love to talk to people, right? Someone else who runs another organization who might be having this issue around trying to connect to a corporate funder that they’ve been having a difficulties. And what can you share or dealing with? Um, you know, a staff member that i might have an issue and someone that they can grayce. Aiken, how do i what do you doing with staffers? What are you doing in this? What would you do in this situation? There’s? This other item called ah three. Sixty evaluation that somebody could do on their own. Investing in their own leadership development, learning about themselves. Explain what that’s about. So three. Sixty is pretty much you are i it’s? Funny cause i would i do with i do them all time where you are getting information and your surveying, not just its your staff, you savor your board, you survey other people who work in the organization. So you’re pretty much getting and it’s your own also your own self evaluation. But you’re getting insight and, um, answers from everyone around you people work for you could be stakeholders. It could be fundez you work with different organizations, different people do them differently here. I would pay for my ceo review it’s the board it’s my staff and it’s, the executive director’s across the network. And you have to be open to the fact that, you know, you might get some things you don’t want to hear something you’re like. Oh, i didn’t know that, but i find it, you know, when it’s done well and you don’t have to do it all the time, but maybe every other year, every two years, every three years that it gives you a lot of insight into what people are thinking in, how you’re doing all right, let’s, sort of things you need to address this need to address this scares the hell out of me. I’m telling you, i think i got everything back and i was like, yeah, he did it at another organization by when i was working at the network additional ownership and was for ah leadership program, and i got it all back, and i’m reading through it and, you know, you’re sitting there wincing like i owe you a lot of some of it was good, and some of it was like, i was, you know what? Okay, and some of it was like, it was painful to read because it was your learning about yourself and things you don’t do you think you do well, but you don’t do well or gaps that are missing or things you need to improve on? Yeah. Like i said, i’m chronically unemployable. I don’t really want to hear these things, but valuable. I called a guy who goes out and ask those questions for you on your behalf. You for the three sixty you can you can you can find actually, um, things like board source, sports sources is that it’s ah website with a non profit that helps boardmember xero but they also have ceo information, and they have a built in surveys already so you can just administer it, like for me, my board offgrid does my my exact committee, my my board chair does my review, and so he sent it out to everybody and it sort of a standard survey, but it’s anonymous, right? Everybody, of course out their stuff, they send it out, they offended and they agree it information, and then you get the snippets of it, you know, i’ve done it where you’ve gotten, um, you get back, and it would literally was a booklet of everybody answers and all the information. And so if you didn’t, you know, not identifying information, but you learned how people answer certain questions about you. All right, we have to relive it there, gerald. Thank you so much. Very good. I don’t mind. I don’t mind some snow out here and i i think the media is probably building it up a bit more than it needs to be. Snow has been with us for quite some time. Well, this morning i was on the phone with some community members in d c and they were. They were of the belief that everything was going to be fine. But they were surrounded by everything being closed and, you know, being told that they should go home early and all of that. So i think think the infrastructure may be preparing for the worst, even if the people are assuming they will just have a nice dinner at home. Excuse me, we’ve got sixteen ntcdinosaur profit technology conference coming up in march, we’ll talk about that. Yeah, i am really excited this is our, you know, the ntc changes cities every year, and this is our first time going to san jose will be in the convention center there, and i think for a lot of community members that feels like this is our first time really going in into the more silicon valley techie side of things and compared to other cities that maybe have a mix of all different sectors and what are the dates in march? And how did people get info? Sure, so the main conference will be march twenty third through the twenty fifth on, and there are a few different pre conference kind of all day workshops that folks consign up for so those air on the twenty second so, depending on what you want to do with either the twenty second or the twenty third until friday, the twenty fifth and you can go to the end ten website and ten dot or ge andi, click on the top on go to the ntc website or you could just type in the whole earl, which would be intend that organ, flash and pc. Okay, but that’s not necessary, because ntcdinosaur right up on their home page. Yeah, okay. And i am hosting ntcdinosaur, which i am very excited about. I think it’s going to be really sorry. It’s, like i’m trying to use language from the first half of your show that’s, more leadership, develop ment and, like organizational language like this is a very strategic merger of programs thank you know, in in different years we’ve tried to make content, um, that’s available outside of physically being on site and part of that’s because we’re committed to accessibility and recognize on ly two thousand people are on ly two thousand people will be at the conference, but the community is much larger than that. Not everyone is able to travel to the conference every year. We want there to be content from the conference that folks who aren’t physically there can still access, but we also i know that there are a lot of a lot of barriers to making that successful there’s very obvious barriers of cost, like trying to do stream a session or something, you know, those kinds of pieces, but there’s also the you know, if you’ve ever watched a video of a conference where they just have a camera set up in the back of the room and you’re really far away and people are just walking in front of the camp a lot of time, you know, screaming the session is not super engaging our valuable because you can’t have a conversation in the room when everybody breaks into groups, right? And you can’t always really tell what may be the questions are what the slides look like. So also thinking, how do we make this something that makes sense? If you are listening to the content, you know, that you’re not missing out fundamentally by trying to look at the at the screen? So knowing that you have had some really fun interviews with community members and speakers, we thought we’d merge those two ideas into something where, you know, you’re still holding interviews and still talking to different speakers about their sessions and highlighting really the diversity of content and sessions that happens, but we’re amplifying that as much as possible, so folks can be listening into those interviews and conversations all throughout the day. Well, i think it’s brilliant, of course i’m hosting it, so i’m biased, but i s so it’ll be a stream of interviews that i’m doing, and then those interviews will play later non-profit radio for folks who can’t join ntcdinosaur i’ve but then we’re also going to break away to some some of the, like the plenary sze right? For instance, you got all of the memories. We’ll also be available if you can listen into those and the plenary there each morning and two of the mornings, they include ignite presentations, which is a format for presenting where they’re just five minutes long and there’s a different presenter in each of those five minutes on, and they have five minutes to tell their story or share their perspective on their slides so you won’t see this lives of course, on the audio, but they’re slide move automatically every fifteen seconds, so whether they are prepared for that or not replied, they’re just going to keep on moving, which makes it you know, it keeps it kind of lively and really you only have five minutes because your slides will stop and you’ll be done alright, very yeah, not a very subtle way of getting somebody off stage in five minutes. All right, exactly. So award shows should just have a night reasons, right? That’s, right? You could save money on orchestras. Just this. Wait. We don’t need the music to swell. Right? The benefit to is you can have something different on your slide than what you say out loud so you could have all your thank you’s, you know, already preset up is all these auto rotating lives, and then you could just talk about whatever you wanted because the thank you’s will happen on their own in the background. That’s exactly exactly what? All right, well, so where can people get info on ntcdinosaur i’ve that audio stream? So if you head to the antenna website and click on the nbc, you’re looking at the ntc specific content underneath the i wanted i’m literally looking at the website now because i am afraid that i’m going to tell you the wrong thing, okay? So underneath at the ntc, which is the navigation there’s, a page about the ntc live, which is where we’ll be putting more, um, you know, the schedule once we kind of decide who’s doing that, what time’s that up so folks can see that ahead of time, and then, of course, that’s, where you’ll get you’ll go to that same page to get the link to listen, ok, cool, so we’ll be selecting interviewees and then they’ll go up on that page. I’m looking forward to really, uh, very much hosting ntcdinosaur with you would be wonderful, i think it’s going to be really a fun way, teo also add opportunities for folks at the conference to share kind of what was in their session and even get more feedback from people listening in that aren’t there indeed, because we’ll have to be able to live tweet, we’ll figure we’ll figure all that out how people going toe dahna let’s ask the questions right from the from the live stream we’ll figure out howto how they’re going to communicate live tweeting or whatever. I don’t know, right? Okay. Yeah, exactly. Okay, we’ll get there. We got till march twenty third. All right. Um well, twenty seconds. People come early, okay? Let’s, let’s talk about now, you know, with gerald, of course we talked about developing leadership. Now we’re talking about forgetting leadership, but not your people were talking about hashtags and campaign. So, um, let’s start with the hashtags. And what is it? What is it to jump on a hashtag? Well, i think a lot of people think of hashtags as something that they would decide and go ahead and start using right there. They’re already in use a lot of times, especially when you know a hashtag you don’t want it to be super long because then that means most of your messages just writing out some long, complicated hash tag, right? So when you’re when you’re really wanting it to be quite short, the probability that someone’s already used those same five letters, you know, tio tag something else, that probably means something else entirely is really i’m just a super quick example, i don’t know if you remember this, tony, but from last year’s conference at the mtc, we were using fifteen anti seizure, which every year we just use the year and then tck, but inevitably, folks kind of type it wrong, or they think of it in reverse in their heads, so folks were typing and tc fifteen, and we saw them doing that, so we thought, well, we better go research with that other hashtag is, you know, maybe no one’s using it and it’s okay? Or maybe someone is and now we’ve got a bunch of, you know, highlights from a non-profit technology conference going into some other hashtag stream and when we research that we realized it was for nike training camp fifteen and all of the nike training camp tweets were like people in super intense spandex workout clothes like doing activities, so it was very interesting. That’s not interesting way don’t know interwoven with i’m in a great data visualization here i am in my spandex yeah, that there’s not a lot of overlap between those two circles. Yeah, right, right. So the value of of double checking a hash tag before you start using it israel, he should certainly do that, and but sometimes it doesn’t matter sometimes of super generic or sometimes it’s a hashtag somebody used for another conference maybe you know, when it’s over six months ago and no one’s used it since. So it isn’t that it’s bad to use the same hashtag, but you should see what it is in case somebody else is watching that and i think starting to use one needs to feel intentional so that you are not, you know, part of that nike training camp, starting to see these other hashtags and saying, what are these people do? You know you are not a part of this community, right? It feels it feels weird if there is an active community using that hashtag it’s, not teo, that separates the world of hashtags, at least in my mind, as hashtag that are used kind of indefinitely. So an example of that would be hashtag non-profit radio. Even though you have a show that’s live on fridays all during the week, you’re still using that hash tag people in the community or unit hashtag to talk about, you know, maybe some of your blood posts or different episodes they’ve listened to or some of the videos they watch, you know, it’s, an active community that isn’t a time time bound use of that hashtag versus the hashtag that really is just for a specific event or a specific campaign like sixteen and tc, right? Once the conference is over, probably people won’t be using the hashtag much anymore, right? And that’s okay, because the purposes over on and i think as organizations think about hey, do we want to try and get some are content into this community, right? If we’re thinking of a hashtag that way thinking about it is this a community that exists kind of indefinitely long term? Or is this a campaign that’s currently running or is this, you know, an event that’s coming up because that changes? I think, how you place your content into that community? Is it going to go away? And they’re not gonna pay attention anymore? Or are you committing to maybe now regularly participating in that conversation? Are you using the hash tag because you want to start using it regularly and that i think it is a bigger decision that a lot of folks think it is because usually they’re just like, well, hope would have take on this and see if anybody respond, but if you’re intentionally doing it, it’s an opportunity in those kind of indefinitely used hashtags tio to reach a segment of your community, maybe you aren’t engaging highlight folks from your community to that group and say, hey, we are a part of this, i think one example to use in that way. What is the hashtag for? Black lives matter certainly started at the campaign at first as a way to elevate riel issues and real voices and now has continued, right, so it has surges when maybe there’s a rally in a certain city for an event going on, or even a really big news news story. But it’s still used all the time, right? As people are kind of collecting and and sharing content and making certain topics visible within that community and an organization that wants to join that should consider that they’re joining that to continue a conversation. So did they may be, have ah, community members who are active, and instead of creating some new content, whether it’s on twitter or facebook or instagram, you know hashtag they’re used across the internet, they don’t you don’t have to create something new to say. We have something special to say you could start by amplifying members of your community who are already actively part of that community and saying here some great tweets from a community member who participated at that rally, we just want to retweet them, right? Or we just want to share some of their takeaways and you’re gonna re post their instagram post, okay, we’ll take a break, uh, we’ll continue the convo after a couple seconds. Anything more to say about well, i guess that’s okay there’s one thing i’d like to know so well how do you decide whether you should jump on or if you should just not and create your own hashtag that’s that’s a great question, i think part of it for me at least is seen it. A significant number of our community members are already using that hashtag if they are it’s a way to kind of endorse of course, that they’re using that has shaped but also join into a conversation that’s existing instead of trying to completely start something new. If you’re launching a brand new campaign and it’s unrelated or you have an event, i wouldn’t try and make your event part of someone’s hash tag or something like that, but when it comes to more general content, i think it is worth considering joining an existing conversation. First again, you have community members that are there, but it might be an opportunity where there’s other folks who aren’t really connected, tio, who aren’t really part of your community yet, but share an interest and could see you through through joining in there. Um, but starting something new, i think, really just means okay, let’s, do a little bit of research look up this hashtag i thought i’d pull up just a couple examples folks might use to search, and i complete these out on the non-profit radio hash tag to for folks that are listening now, but a couple that i used just to, you know, double check what what a hashtag is that maybe i see being used um one is hash at it it’s all one word, but it looks funny so it’s hash the word hash at it dot com and you could just put in even if you don’t know if it’s in use or not, you could just put in a hashtag and it’ll tell you some stats about it. You can see where it’s being used. Another option for that is a site called rice tag like rice like the food tag um, but something that i found helpful is, you know, on another website or another social tool that is really reliant on hashtags is instagram and that’s because on instagram, hashtags work just like they work on twitter, facebook, et cetera where you know they become a link and you can see all of the all of the photos people are posting with that hashtag but on instagram, links are not hyperlinked so if i were a post a photo of you and i dont see it put in non-profit radio or tony martignetti dot com it’s just plain text, it doesn’t turn into a link. Hashtags are really important for organizing and elevating content and ikonos square, which really is all one word of the website ikonos square is a really helpful tool for your when you’re on your computer to search instagram so you can from your computer where you have a better screening and khun seymour at once could search for hashtags and get a sense of okay, it is this content that matches with what i want to be sharing or is this a hashtag being used that obviously has, you know, a context that’s very different than mine? Excellent. Okay, i’ll i’ll put these in the takeaways for the show, but what was the middle one? Rice say that one again rice tag just like the food and then tag like hashtag okay, excellent. Okay, um all right, we just have a few minutes and we wanted to say little about campaigns vs vs hashtags what? First of all, just make sure nobody knows what’s what’s the difference we’re talking about now hashtags. Ah, different purpose.
