Steven, thank you. Thank you for having a pleasure monisha managing up. Why is this ah, challenging area for people managing up is probably one of the most important skills that people need for success over the course of their career, whether they’re in their first job or they are an e t managing up to their board on and it’s really about how do you develop a good relationship with your boss? Uh, there’s research that shows that the number one reason people leave their jobs because of their managers and the idea of managing up empowers people to manage their managers to make a more effective relationship. Um, so we have all of our programs we always hear from people it’s one of the biggest challenges they face, and even someone who has a great, really ship of their boss typically finds actually thinking about how they’re managing up can help them to be more effective. Wow number one reason that people leave jobs, okay, that google done some really amazing research on what helps the pretension of employees. They look at all the data on their employees, and they looked at how much of it was tied. To tenure and promotions and teams. And the thing that they found consistently across the company was it had to do with your relation with your manager, steven, you find managing up a challenge day today? No. That’s. What? I like to think i’m getting better at it. Uh, particularly for younger managers, newer managers on younger employees. That could be very difficult to have that perspective. And perhaps, but you put yourself on the other side of the table. Imagine what that might be like. Yeah. That’s always hard to empathize. What? Where you in? In the organization at exponents philanthropy. Oh, in terms of where i sit on the orc chart, i’m towards the bottom there when i started off, actually, i was, uh, not only the youngest employee, but also the at the lowest level on. So for an organization with about twenty staff, uh, it could take a while to figure out how to navigate that god. So currently i’m well called mid level. Okay. All right. We obviously still have a boss. And now, yeah, but now you have reporting people, people reporting to you, actually don’t i i actually ah, managing a program that’s. Where the young non-profit professional network comes in, right? A tremendous training ground where i actually can manage people and bring those experiences back to explode. Okay, okay, and so in the future, you’ll be able to help people managed the help people themselves manage up when you are their supervisor. Absolutely, i would think so. Okay, alright, cool. And, uh, is this something that you thought about as a problem area before you went to the managing for success program? You know, i think i felt it. I’m not sure i fully realised in my head, you know what it was i was experiencing? I could feel that tension in the room with my boss, and i wasn’t sure why i was there. I was pretty focused on myself, right? And i think, yeah, the proinspire experience and certainly others as well, open me up to the possibility of oh, hey, there’s, there’s something else going on here that i could i could really take control of, yeah, so you felt it, but you weren’t around you weren’t sitting around saying i need to manage up better no, and i didn’t have the language either, right? Right money shows. That pretty common people feel it attention with their boss, but they don’t know what the difficulty is. It is, and i think there’s also a common perception, which is that your manager should adapt to you. So people sort of being my manager should understand how i work, and they should manage me well, and if they don’t know, that could be frustrating. What managing up really is about is, how are you understanding your manager? How are you adapting to them to make it a success? Oppcoll relationship? I wonder if i had gone through the managing for success program if i would still be working for other people? I don’t know, i find that go ahead, what were going to say potentially, you know, i think one of the things that can really frustrate people is feeling like their manager isn’t very effective. Um, and one of things we hear from managers that can frustrate them it’s feeling like the people who work for them aren’t good at providing the information or communicating. And so managing up to make a big difference, i feel like i could never work for someone again. I mean, i’ve had my own business now for thirteen years and the show and everything. And ah, i think i just think i would be a terrible employee. I don’t think anybody would hire me. I would not. I would not hire me. I definitely i would shoot myself in the foot in the interview. I i would come across his. I’d be too much. I looked a highlight that left when she made about adapting to your manager rather than them adopt into you on something that took me a while to come around to that idea. And once i did all the sudden it opened up so many doors for me. I really understood what i could do in that relationship to improve it. How it better communicate with them. Um, i realized that, uh, that responsibility, latto and that was with me, right? Not necessarily. With them, they’ve got eight, nine other employees to worry about it. Well, yeah. And tony, into your point about whether you could ever work for someone again. You know, as a consultant, you probably are doing a lot of managing your client on. So i think it’s actually a skill set that we all need. No matter what role that were in yes, you’re right. Of course i do, but i don’t have to see them every single day. I just trust me, i would not hire myself. I’d be a bad employee. Plus, i always want to good vacation days. I mean, i always want the week between christmas and new year’s even just being the new employee a you know, i insist. So there’s a lot of there’s, a lot of struggles, but we get a little personal but that’s okay, it’s me, it’s me doing it. Ok, we’re gonna go out for a break. Duitz welcome back to big non-profit ideas for the other ninety five percent, steven let’s explore the solemn or how did that help for you up and make you more comfortable with the idea of you adapting to your manager? Sure, i think critical of his process, there were there were two things one was working with the coach really hearing from someone else, the perspective that i was throwing out there in the world, the ideas that i was throwing out there in the world and how i was communicating those just hearing someone else on doesn’t have to be a coach. It could be a significant other it could be someone else that’s close to you hearing, repeating back some of the language that you’re using, perhaps in different ways. It really offers you perspective on how you might be sharing those things your your bus and how that might be playing into very specific parts of the ship monisha having somebody objective, that’s, that’s, valuable, it could be really valuable. And you know, if it’s a coach or steven said it could be a friend or someone else but sometimes just having people remind you people can get caught up in thinking about their boss isn’t like them, or they don’t like their boss and actually just having people remind you that that person has their own set of needs and priorities. So maybe they’re not following up on the request you made or giving you the feedback you ass for, but it may not be because of how they feel about you may be thinking about what are all the things that they have on their place. Stephen also made excellent point. You know, his manager had nine people reporting to him. So it’s impossible for the for the manager to adapt, teo each of them? Yeah, you know, one of our rules of managing up his own execution of the relationship, so really to manage it? Well, that means you are responsible for scheduling, checking with your manager for putting the agenda together to make it. I’m sure you’re asking your manager for what you need health on, because the fact is that most managers have way more responsibility than they actually have time for. And if you can do a good job of trying, teo ease their work load, they will really value you, so recognizing what are some of the things that are prayers for your manager will help you manage up better. Stephen, you have anything to say about that? Some of the practical ideas? Absolutely. I’ve actually i’m sitting here what they work sheet at monisha introduced metoo proinspire this managing up selfish doesn’t work sheet. Honestly, a soon as i thought i knew this had the power to change the relationship. But i had currently with my boss. Uh, it has questions like, uh, how well do you understand your manager? How did they prefer to receive information? How do they process information? So while i took up her stab at that really jotting down things oh, you know, i think she prefers you. Now i think that she likes to have the operation advance. What the manager of the program actually encouraged each of us to do was to go back with this worksheet. Stick with your boss and ask these questions. And it was incredible how open she wass she had been asked. Know what motivates? You know? What are you trying to accomplish? And what do you afraid of? She shared that information. I think the biggest revelation for her, wass no, i haven’t actually articulated that too many of my employees. So even a year later, i’m still hearing her now share those things geever join excellence. So it was like you sort of trained your manager to be mohr sharing with the other people who report to her about what her needs are basically isn’t that interesting? It’s funny, that wasn’t my original intention, right? Uh, in my written original intention was really to improve our relationship one on one, and then that really, er but she took it to the next level very much. I appreciate that. Yeah. Monisha you should charge extra tuition to stevens stevens. Direct report. Yes. Uh, the other thing i would share is there’s actually a great article from harvard business review about ten years old, but called managing your boss and it’s. Probably one of the first sort of classics that created the whole idea of managing up. And they have a checklist in there. So anyone who’s listening can just google managing your boss? Harvard business review went find that article. And those questions that cubine mentioned there’s. A set of those toe actually sit down with your own manager and have that conversation. Excellent. Okay, i love resource is like that. Um, steven, that is a great story you got. You got another story about your success in doing this or or maybe even a challenge in doing this, please? Yeah, absolutely. I think. And i think this, uh, well particularly resonate with younger folks as they’re entering a field trying to establish themselves for a long time. I bounced from job to job from culture worker, organization and different culture teo other cultures. And so when i came to exponents philanthropy, what i didn’t realize that time is that i had a pretty fixed mindset. If you’ve read the book, mind that you might be familiar with language fixed and growth, i wanted to prove myself i want to prove my words, my talent dahna with the with the knowledge that that could lead to long term employment. And so because of that, i didn’t put myself on the other side of the table. I couldn’t i was so focused on, uh, improving myself, i suppose, but not from the right perspective. And so, as i grew as i worked with the coach as intern was introduced to programs like this, i came around to this idea, and as i talked with my boss and she said, frankly, after promotion, we need to focus on the work now that helped me did it and say, uh, you know what i think? I think she’s, right? I think i need to put the organization first and simply doing that and really dedicating myself to owning my job and figuring out how to do it the best i could. It opened me up to all learning on the other side. Awesome, huh? Money. Should you mentioned earlier? The myers briggs assessment? How does that play into managing up? Yeah. So myers briggs is personality assessment. And, um, it’s pretty popular to actually find free versions online, but the idea is really understanding people’s preferences. So the most famous part of myers briggs is, are you an e or an eye extra vert or an introvert and something teo think some typical characteristics, for example, of extroverts is that they liked teo talk aloud. They think by talking aloud and introverts tend to want time, tio think to themselves before sharing ideas so that actually can have an important role in managing up depending on what type of preferences your manager has, you might have a manager that they’re going to want to see something in advance so they can think about it before giving you feedback. Or you might have a manager. We’re just going to sit there and real time discussed everything and brainstorm. So myers briggs is a great tool, not just on the extrovert introvert, but are they big picture detail oriented to really start to get to know what the purposes of your manager and how are you asking them for the support you need in a way? That’s going teo tied to what they’re looking for. Steven, you want to tell us whether you’re ah ee? Aye or big picture detail where you fall in myers briggs quickly. Well, a credible line e i e i can bounce back and forth. I’m definitely big picture. Okay, i’m up straddling the line i would think that’s good. You play both sides. It’s been interesting, teo to shift every time i originally saw myself as an introvert. One of his younger, uh, extra vert in my early twenties, for sure. And now i think with all this self reflection it’s really taking me back, teo, see myself in a different way. Cool. Okay, and big picture. And how old are you? I’m twenty eight. Okay, now, how did knowing where you fit in the myers briggs? How did that help you out in managing up? Duitz it certainly helped me understand how it might be communicating information. Now i want to receive information from others. I think it helped me just take a step back and look inside myself buy-in verified perhaps the few things that i wasn’t so sure about that i don’t have a great example for you right there, okay? And you can share one of the things that we hear a lot. Sometimes people feel like they’re managers are micro managers, they want to get too much into the details, and actually it could be sort of a preference difference that if the manager is someone who’s more detail oriented and the person is working for them is more big picture, and maybe that the person is not providing their manager enough details to hide to their preferences. So that’s an example that we see a lot where really understanding what? Are the things your manager looks for to help them process information can help you provide what will be most effective. So do you do? Do you have students? Participants do the myers briggs assessment on their boss or of their boss. So we have them to myers briggs for themselves, and then we actually have them think about what they think it might be for the broth or to have a conversation with your boss to find out. You know? What is their meyers break? Okay, steven, did you do that part when you were having this great conversation with the woman? We didn’t get as far into that part? No, no complication part for sure. Okay, yeah. Okay, i would say one of one of the teams overall that we talk about managing up is communication. Steven said people typically underestimate what their managers i need to know and what they do now. So there’s often this assumption of like, oh, i don’t need to tell my manager that. Or maybe they think their manager already knows something. And particularly when it comes to a bad news. Sometimes people are hesitant to tell their manager stuff too soon. But what we really recommend when it comes to managing up is just over communicate and really be forthright with good news and bad news. It’s better to let someone know that there may be a problem on the horizon, then to wait and see what happens and spring about them at the last minute. You know, very interesting that we believe that our managers know and need to know more, then they actually do yes, well, and if you ask a needy, they will definitely say that they feel like people don’t tell them a lot of staff. Um, so i think there’s a perception that people who are more senior know everything that’s going on when they don’t actually feel like they’re in touch with all those stuff is happening, okay, what could be such a critical conversation that have with whoever you’re reporting tio down and talk about how much information would you like on and then ask again, make sure to ask again because they may not tell you exactly what they really are feeling? Uh, so if you check in along the way and i provide enough information, do you understand the process low enough? Would you like me to provide more? And that gives you an opportunity to really tweak your style overtime? Okay, avery smart, and so so you’re not just doing this in one discreet conversation, but as you said, checking in overtime about about these things, too it’s a relationship, you’ve got to keep working on it. All right, excellent. Excellent. Um all right, let’s monisha you have cem cem rules about managing up. Why don’t you, uh, why don’t you start with the one about your manager committing yourself to manage his success? Yeah, so the number one rule is that you want your manager to be successful because if they’re successful, you’ll be successful. So the number one rule just commit yourself to your manager success and that you want to do your best to help set them up to be successful. What if? What if your your what if you’re an introvert and you’re on? Not like stephen, you know, close, but borderline, but you’re an extreme introvert and your boss is an extreme extroverts. Are you doomed? No, i don’t think so at all. You know, i’m a pretty strong extra burr and i’ve had people who work for me, who are introverts? And i remember one of them actually sitting me down and you know, i you know, i’m an introvert, and i like to take my time to processing. So, um, you know, the way i work best is if you want me back on something, if you could give me some time to think about it, um, i’ll come back with much better information that i feel i could do right in the moment and that’s just triggered for me like a new awareness. What a great way of heard a manage up to say like, this is something about me she also, you know, was doing her best to, um, adapt to my style and know that when she was giving me things that i would want to process out loud so she might give me something, and i wouldn’t review in advance. But when we were sitting down and talking to it together, i could really give her a lot of feedback on it. So i think you could have a great relationship with an introvert. Extrovert. Okay, steve, steven, you mentioned committing yourself to the organization’s success. What do you what? Do you? How do you commit yourself to your manager’s success? A manager? Yeah, well, first, i think i’ll sit down and try and understand what it is she’s trying to accomplish. Yeah, and i’m a big picture thinker, right? So i’m going to sit there and think, ok, what this ways that i could support that directly never roll. In addition of that, how can i help her build relationships, perhaps down the road? How could i strengthen relationships on our team? So that’s that’s not necessarily something she has to focus on for me, it’s very conversation driven i’m someone who loves to take the time to get to know all the fix working, and hopefully that helped her move along and in her in-kind anything else you want to add about your manager’s success? Monisha um, i think the other piece is finding the right balance, so you don’t agree with everything that your manager’s saying you’re asking you also not just fight about everything. So, um, committee yourself, commander, success doesn’t mean necessarily just being a yes person that’s really, that you respect them and that you want them and the organization to be successful, okay? How about the one about? Oh, you touched on this a little bit of owning the execution of the relationship we have there’s a couple things that are really important here, so i think one is really taking responsibility for the time you have is your manager. One of the biggest complaints we hear from people in our programs is their managers don’t do regular check ins with them, and you can take ownership of keep continuing to reschedule those and ask for those, um i know one of our fellows one’s had her check and rescheduled for three months, but she kept rescheduling it, and and then it happened, so making sure that your manager knows that you were still going to continue asking for that. Ah, and then when you do meet with your manager making good use of their time, so whether you’re in person or on the phone, sending them an agenda in advance and using the time to talk about issues or risk about the things that you’re working on together, you don’t have to use that time as an update or stuff that could be done over email. But what are the things that you really should be talking about and you could do a great job managing up by actually thinking that through the dance and the last thing to own execution of the relationship is really be dependable and build credibility. And so whether that’s sending drafts or things for your magic to review and to be honest about your capabilities, if your manager’s asked you to do something that you haven’t done before, you can let them know i haven’t done it before this time going to approach it, but it’s a way to really strength in that relationship. I love the idea of you providing agendas for your meetings with your boss. I don’t i don’t think that’s too common. Yeah, yeah. And i think it’s a great technique for managing up it’s also a great technique for managing down. So managers should ask for that. A swell as people should provide that for their manager. Steven, how about you, what’s your experience around around all these strategies that monisha shared? Oh, the agenda. Studying is definitely an expectation. Had excellent philanthropy, that’s. Something that is owned. Bye bye. The employees by the fix that are coming to this supervisors. That need it. We’re setting the purpose. We’re making it clear what that process is going to be for the conversation. And again thinking, how do we use this time? Most effective way? Yeah. Is that something you brought there or it was already in place? The agenda? You know, i think we have to think the management center for that they’ve got a great template. Actually, i don’t know if it’s available on their website, it might be worth reaching out to someone there to see if they share that. And where is that? Where is that stephen? In the management center, i believe. Based in washington, d c in washington, d c that one on one. Check in. Okay. Okay. Monisha, we have just like, a minute. A half or so left. You want to see a lot of communication? Yes. Um, this is the area where i think if people look at one thing they could do to manage a better it’s. Really? To think about how they can communicate effectively, how much information they should be providing what’s the best way to communicate with their manager. Think stephen mentioned. Is it? Email visit in person. Um and asking questions when your manager asks you to do something, part of the communication is asking questions. I understand what you’re doing as well. Demonstrate your thinking, you know, sometimes the questions will push your manager to think about things differently, so i feel like communication is probably the one area it’s someone to focus on managing up that they can really dio steven, i’ll give you the last word just about thirty seconds. You everything you’ve said has subsumed in community goodcompany cations yeah, that’s the foundation for that relationship. From my perspective, i’ll have to side with monisha on this one, uh, be more open you could be in your communication. I think the stronger the relationship could have particularly important things, uh, with any given, mission driven organization, or those two really embrace that and be as open as they can with their communications. Start down the end there, lacey. What? What troubles do non-profits have around creation and curation? Well, i think i think it’s the same, you know, concerns and challenges. We haven’t a lot of other issues. We are living in an age where everyone is a publisher, everyone is creating content twenty four seven and we have small teams, small budgets and a limited amount of time to do this. But our audiences don’t know that our audiences want to hear from us. They want to, you know, see the same amount of things from us as they do from bigger organizations and brands. And how can we be strategic and nimble and have fun with doing this? Because it’s supposed to be fun? Okay, meghan, anything you want to add to an introduction? Sort of the problem statement or motivation statement. Yeah, absolutely. I mean, everything that lacey said time and budget is one of the biggest challenges. Andi, i mean, with the session, we just really want to focus on how you can kind of creatine scale this huge content marketing program with maybe just one person, maybe just five hours a week. Really? Okay. Five it’s. Probably one person. We recognize that. Ok. That’s. Very good, because the audience for non-profit radio is small and midsize non-profits so could very well be one person. It’s. Probably one person who wears five other hats. Besides being a constant creator, they probably have closely, like, sorry, i was going to say it. That’s probably one person who wears five different hats in their organization, and they have to do this in addition to being a marketer, being a pr person being three other things besides, a content producer might have hr also true. Okay, all right, so how do we know what our audiences are looking for? Megan, what type of content is appropriate before we start creating? Yeah, that’s a great question and it’s really important to know what your audience is going to respond. Tio what inspires them? What motivates them? I mean, you have to listen, i mean, wine, i think as an organization, you know, your target demographic is that’s a great place to start, but then who do you want your target demographic to be? Who else do you want to reach and think about how you can bring value to them? Ok, how do you assess what those who are not currently communicating with you are seeking? Sure, i mean, you have to get out there on the interwebs and see what people are posting what people are responding. Teo what’re they engaging on dh, honestly looking at similar organizations and seen what they’re doing? And what successful for them is a good indicator of what science says they’re responding. Teo as we’re doing this listening, we could be listening to hashtags, absolutely organization names sure what you know, see who’s who’s prominent on twitter in the cause absolutely influencers on twitter i am, i am subscribed to every newsletter that’s out there as well, just keeping an eye on where the conversation is, what trends are happening, what topics are happening, definitely hashtags following folks on twitter, following conferences like this as well to see what those topics and themes are okay. And lacey, how about on the side of people who are already be communicating with us? How do we assess what what their interests? Well, i think listening is definitely like megan said key, especially on the internet, it’s a very talkback culture, people will tell you what they want to hear and what they don’t like, and you should, you know, be responsive to that there’s going to be times where you have to do something that, you know, isn’t necessarily going to be, you know, internet popular because it’s an organizational priority, but for the flip side of that time, like if people if you’re if you know your audiences watch, is watching video, if you know they’re reading block post, where are they now? What kind of continuity consuming and how can you put your content into a space where they’re already living? Okay, i’ve had guests say that you need to meet your constituents where they are, not where you would like them to be? That is one hundred percent sure you’d like to be producing content and delivering exactly, although on the flip side of that i’d say if your you don’t have to be everywhere, i know that, and i’m going to date myself right now, i think, but snapchat is this cool new thing the kids are doing and i don’t understand chaps, snapchat, quite frankly, it frightens me that’s how i know i’m officially like an old now, but i know everybody all the all the, you know, brand industry people are like chase snapchat, chase snapchat and platforms that are like that. But if your audience isn’t there, you don’t need to be there if your audience isn’t, you know, young teens, young millennials, you don’t really need to do snapchat if it’s not a fit for you don’t force it, okay? Yeah, and just to add to that, i mean going rogue audiences and knowing that you might be one individual and you have limited time to to reach those audiences doubled down on the top two to three channels that work for you. Okay? Yes, focus. You know, i know my own experience for the for the chauffeur non-profit radio. You know, we have a facebook page because two billion people our there you have to, but we keep it fresh content every day, but it’s still not still not our priority. Twitter is because i have more fun on twitter and you love twitter love, twitter, i’m where no one will be able to see this right now, but the necklace that i’m wearing is actually my twitter handle. We’re shooting a video. So what is it like do-it-yourself shout out at lacey and be it will be a lot of notary about doctor who and benedict cumberbatch. So if that’s not your bag like you probably shouldn’t follow me. But twitter is so great and it’s it’s so immediate, like you’re actually just having a conversation with people who are interested in your organization, your mission, the stuff that you dio and they’re there to talk to you it’s so awesome! Yeah, it is. I love the immediacy of it and i find a hundred forty characters to be no limitation it all because you just carry on, so send multiple tweets and then move in private and then moved to email and then a phone call. I’ve gotten somebody guests that way. I’ve gotten sponsors sponsors to the show that way it starts with a tweet and it moves it moves in progress, you know, just progressive, you know, what’s. So amazing is how receptive people are on twitter. You could email someone twenty times, they’d never respond. You tweet out in once and they’re so excited you acknowledge them. It’s visual listening, basically like it’s and it’s, i’ve had people just, you know, favor and retweet me saying something like thanks for watching with us, which is like such a basic thing to say to someone, but it makes their day and i could do that and that’s amazing! I love that your necklace is your twitter idea. Yeah, it’s all it’s, my personal brand all the time. Not really. I just really i love twitter it’s a technology conference. It’s totally, totally appropriate. All right, i know. I forgot to put it on my business card, so i just wear it around. We’ll make it. Let me give you a shot. What? You want to shout your twitter handle since we’re talking about at megamerger, big bird, meg miree okay, okay. Okay, let’s, you know, let’s dive into this a little more deeper and listening. Listen, so many people talk about listening, but i don’t think there really such a good listener. What does it mean? Toe? Listen on the web, listen to a channel, anybody? Well, i think first you have to acknowledge that some of things you hear or not could be things that you like, and i think that sometimes hard for for organizational leadership to maybe here because we want to think that everyone loves us all the time and and that they don’t have, you know, criticisms that they want to share. So i think the first step is understanding that you’re going to hear some great stuff about your brand, and you’re going to have some not so great stuff about your brand and be okay with that, but that is an opportunity every time somebody tweet something negative about you or leaves you at negative facebook comment or whatever the platform is that’s an opportunity to improve, they like you well enough to have you take care of something time to do that. If they didn’t like you, they would just ignore it and yeah, the opposite of love is not hated. Indifference, indifference. Very good. Okay, yeah, yeah, i mean, it’s not but it’s opportunity to engage as well. I mean, they’ve they’ve giving you perhaps some constructive criticism, and you have that chance, too engage with them one on one and even turned them around. Take that feedback, but acknowledge on appreciate it. And ah, lot of times you know when i’ve responded, teo negative feedback in different ways, i i end up then creating a new, loyal member of my community. That’s a great point. Actually, there is sometimes so much value in turning someone around from someone who said something critical to say to you, but then they’re like, you know what? You really handled this criticism and and open and in a way that wants to move forward, and i respect that and i think that’s like that’s such a big step rather than just letting people shout into the void. Although sometimes you have to let people shout into the void because it’s either something you can’t change or there not shouting at you in a very constructive way. But no, you heard me and you spoke to me and you honored my criticism, and now i’m happy to still be part of the organization. It’s magnificent that’s. Outstanding that’s. So key. I mean, exactly what you said. You heard me, people just they want to be heard as long as it is constructive, right? Yeah. Back-up all right, so we know now we have sort of sense of where we should be creating content which channels. How about trying to optimize and leverage our internal resource is for content creation. So it isn’t just one person. How do we start to get some support? Oh, yeah. You have so much support on your team. They just don’t know it yet way. Empower them. And that’s it’s about it’s empowering them. It’s about inviting, you know, how do you even ask people if they want to contribute in different ways, figure out what may motivate them to want a right technical content or personal content or personal story. You can also go outside your organization, partner organizations. People are very responsive to guess. Posting so inviting people in your community to do guess pose on dh. Just help amplify your messages is definitely possible. Okay, there’s. Some tools. That we need teo, give them to empower them a simple camera or how are they going to start to create the content once they’re empowered? Well, first, i think you need to ask them because i think a lot of this is people don’t people in your organization may not know that there are these opportunities to be part of your content production chain, for example, we have we have a couple of blog’s on our website. One is local history based one is this one’s mine it’s ah, the anglophile british tv blawg, which is basically mean, turning out about down abila twentyfourseven but but there are people in our in our organization who are either big fans of, you know, british tv or their local history nards like find the people who are, you know, kind of nerds for the thing that you’re audiences into because i just started writing this block it wasn’t even part of my job originally, but that doesn’t even feel like work for me because i would do this anyway in my free time, right? But so there are going to be people in your organization who are like that for maybe. Not british tv, but whatever your thing is, so ask them number exactly what megan was saying. Find what motivates people, what would move them, too you to create some content for you. All right, yeah, and i would also just add, be open to what people might have to contribute. So you may not have even thought about increasing, you know, the photography and the imagery that you’re using. But you might have an amateur photographer on your team and making that connection and then letting them just go wild on what they can contribute. Okay? Suppose it going a little too wild. And what they contribute is not gonna work for whatever reason out. How did we ever manage this diplomatically? Well, i guess there should always be guidelines in the beginning, right? You should talk about the goals and objectives for what you want to dio and go wild within those goals and objectives. And, of course, as the one person who’s in charge of your content creation, i mean, you’re still going to be the curator and the publisher, so maintain that control, just quality control. Okay? You have to make sure they know that. There’s there’s, somebody who’s who’s overseeing this was curating this and that. And that there’s sort of a consistent brand voice. Yeah. I mean, you’re a brand voice. Sounds very like marquetry, but it xero organization has has a voice that that they sort of used to speak to people. And it should all kind of toe that line. Okay. Okay. Um, any any good stories from inside organizations about having empowered non professional creators? Teo, contribute anything? Well, of course you had yours about. Yeah, we actually have interns like specific interns that sign up to do our local history blogged they’re like local student students from g w or local colleges, and they come to write history stories for us, and they get to go to the library of congress and nerd out in the reading room, and they’ve produced some really fantastic stuff. Okay, cool interns. Excellent. Yeah. Yeah. So we have similar, but we had individual working with us. So we build fund-raising tool specifically for human service agencies on we had someone that was working with us but also sitting in one of our partners offices essentially doing case management a swell. And we realized that she had this just wealth of experience and knowledge in terms of engaging with homeless individuals, and we saw an opportunity to start breaking down stereotypes. We asked her to to write a block posts about kind of a day as a case manager, and it was one of one of our top performing block posts. So that was kind of empowering and discoverable moments within our team. Yeah, outstanding. Alright. Very encouraging, hyre video or you’re doing much with video. We are. I mean, yes and no, there are some is a tv. Station it is but there’s weird internal things about production in our production office versus online production on our team. It’s very boring. I won’t tell you about it, but we do to a local siri’s called not that d c, which is our team’s effort to go out and find, you know, everybody has stereotypes of d c that we all wear, like in taylor pantsuits and and are just like political wonks, but so we made an effort to go out and find groups in our community who were doing very not d c things like the roller derby, for instance, on dh thie, my favorite was floating yoga, which were its people. Who do you go out in the potomac, which i don’t really recommend but go on the potomac on paddleboards and do yoga on the paddle boards? And so we did a whole little segment on them. It was it’s been kind of cool just to see these nitti things going on in the city that people don’t think, does that that’s? Yeah, meghan, any advice around video? Yeah, you know, we do a range of things from working with actual video production agencies that help us tell stories, teo helping our par runners and even ourselves just creating like short, digestible video content all from your iphone s so it’s it’s almost reminding people you’ve got this powerful tool on your phone and you can make great videos. They don’t have to be totally professional. Production value does not have to be exemplary. No people just want it to be authentic and genuine. And so you can push that stuff out there. And audiences so receptive to that. Okay, let’s. See what else? Wait, you were talking about repurpose ing content that we’ve already created, because that will help us not have tto continually generate new content. Megan, stay with you. What would you advice around with purpose? Ah, i would just once. I would just encourage people to re purpose. I think a lot of times you don’t realize spend time creating this piece of content. You share it. Once in, a lot of folks, forget that they can share it again. They can update it a couple of months later. They can add to it with relevant new, timely information. Um, honestly, i sew a quick example of this way. Published this. Post last year around valentine’s day around compassion and where that fits in with ending poverty and homelessness. Um, and i’ll be honest, we just re published that again around valentine’s day this year and, you know, maybe some folks saw it again, but kind of repurpose ing updating the title, updating again with some relevant stats and, you know, it’s five minutes instead of another hour doing hour and a half, creating a brand new piece of content, okay, especially something around a holiday it’s it’s fair to do it again, totally fair there’s so much stuff out there there’s so much people enjoy reading it again. Plus we have new members who who haven’t seen okay, you want to suggest something? I wasn’t i was at a conference last week, and they talked about the idea of stackable content, which i really like, where you take like the spirit of your two thousand word block post or whatever, and that can then become a two minute you know, youtube video it could become an instagram photo it could become a tweet like you khun, take one thing and turn it into six things you don’t need to make. Six separate things you just need to tailor that thing for the place that you’re putting it. Okay, any examples of that? You can share anything come to mind. I’m blanking on a lot of cold medicine right now. Wait till the end, but you’re rallying. You’re doing fine, occasional coughs, but i could turn your mic down quickly, doing fine. Okay, well, if you think of it free, are you solving another couple of minutes together? What have we not talked about? Round content, curation creation? What more can we sight? Come on, i’d say don’t be afraid because some freak don’t don’t be afraid to take risks and to just make something and see what happens. Because there it’s, especially with iphones like megan was saying before it’s so easy to come up with with a video or or just right like a quick block post and have fun with it like if it doesn’t work, it doesn’t work and you just don’t do it again and sometimes things that you don’t know that are going to hit our huge like, for example, we made ah down abby personality quiz a couple of years ago, so sad down abby’s over, by the way and we just basically did it because we thought that it would be something fun to dio, but it was a huge hit for us because everybody else you know, sort of blonde onto it and loved it. And that was also luckily, right? When, like, personality quizzes were thing, but like, you can have fun with it and don’t be afraid to try some of it doesn’t work. Okay, i feel like i’m under pressure now to give you a chance to shout out downtown abbey for a fifth time. Ha ha. You haven’t haven’t quite exhausted your have lots of down. Abby started. It isn’t. I know. I know that way. We’d like to try to learn from some of them out. Anything you got, megan. Anything else that i add another? Yeah, another don’t be afraid. Don’t be afraid if tio publish something that’s not perfect. It’s. Okay. I mean, a lot of especially when you’re a small team. It’s it’s. Kind of about speed, too. Right? Speed, speed and nimbleness. Nimbleness and quantity. A lot of times, too. Especially if you’re like. All right. It’s bog season let’s. Just get him. Going, don’t be scared if there’s a tie, paul hey, you can fix it later. And someone will tell you it’s only definitely tell you, but it’s cool it’s another opportunity to say thanks for reading written blog’s still still very popular. Oh yeah, actually, i think and i wrote the statue because i’m meaning to say it later, but i’m not going to remember it perfectly. Now i think our overall read website growth last year was fairly flat, but we had our two are two sort of nicci blog’s like that was where we saw the biggest both of those increased exponentially, while our actual website traffic didn’t go up that much like the audience is there for things that people are interested in also it’s content you own, which is great. Yeah, i mean, our block is a very great source of really drawing in new members to our community on once they’re there, and once there they feel like they’re getting valuable information, then you have a little marketing opportunity to convert someone. Okay, so you find the block is ah, first first page is a lot of people land on. Yes, definitely that’s how we’re bringing in top of the funnel because we’re creating content. That’s not, you know, hardcore marketing content. It’s educational, it’s, fun, it’s, informative people end up there and they go, oh, this is what’s handup about going to click around. Yeah, okay, let’s. See, we have i feel like another down to now be shot out. E gotta go satisfy my wife for i mean, that is what people used to ask me the most. When i met them, they would be like, oh, i work for w we do local public television, and people would always tell me one of two things they’d be like, i love sesame street, which or they would ask me, what’s gonna happen on down, abby, and i’m like, i don’t know, they don’t tell me, oh, all right, we’re gonna leave with the downturn, abby. How does video strategy fit into our overall content strategy? Well, something that c three has been saying to non-profits for years is that you don’t just need one viral video. You need a video strategy video works five video please come get away from me. I know i know it’s so hard if it happens, but it hardly ever does. Alright. Well, especially with the ice bucket challenge happening last summer, i think a lot more non-profits now it’s, not just the viral video it’s, how can we get hundreds of viral videos in a campaign? But the truth is that that doesn’t just happen, it’s not something that you can construct inside your boardroom, it’s something that has to happen either organically or it happens over time with a lot of effort and a lot of practice and a lot of community building ondo something that we’ve seen happening really catching on with non-profits is the concept of content marketing s o producing content that’s geared towards a very specific audience with the intention of driving them toe action on dh that content is really focused around their goals and their needs and speaks very clearly to who that audience is. S o we see a lot of non-profits coming to us now asking about content strategy, wanting to know more about it wanting help with developing their own content strategy so that they can create thoughtful content around their causes on that make their constituents really excited to be involved, excited to volunteer, excited to donate on. And so we see video fitting into that really well, a za piece of i don’t know what that was. I don’t know if part of part of the science fair floor just fell down or what? Hopefully everything okay that that that that clolery but oh, it was probably the puzzle. You’re right. I don’t know what that weird little guy. You okay? Better what one i i pictured someone’s booth collapse happened. We got a little scared each foot told jungle. Yeah, well, also saying so we see video fitting into that really nicely because we we know that video is one of the most compelling forms with content you can produce on dh it really can get two people emotionally. It can really drive people to action in a way that other types of content can’t, because i mean compare i’m adding sound and video and images together just makes for a really compelling emotional story on dso, we see video fitting inside of a convict strategy really well, along with other pieces of content. So, along with your social media strategy, along with your website, along with their email, you can’t just think of video as its own entity. It’s smarter to think about it inside the lens of all the content that you’re creating from your non-profit ah, should should every piece of video in our strategy have ah have a call to action, even if it’s something small, like share should it always be a call of action? You know, i think you can’t go wrong with having a call to action. I don’t know, i wouldn’t say that every piece of video action absolutely has to have a called action, but i do think that more non-profits tend to shy away from putting a call the action at the end cause they don’t want to be too demanding was what we’ve seen in the non-profits we worked with in the audiences that we worked with is that people expect there to be a call to action. People want to take a meaningful action if they care about your cause on dh. So even if it is like you were saying something simple, like sharing or telling your friend about this or visiting this website, people tend to like somewhere to go after they see a piece of content that they find really engaging. So i i wouldn’t say that you have to, but i would say that if you want teo, you shouldn’t try away from it. Okay, i’m going, i’m going to presume to tell me if i’m wrong is the place to start with our video strategy fitting into our overall content strategy is our goals for video. Oh, yes. Okay, maybe you talk to michael about this last year. Thiss comes up a lot. Yes. Yes, absolutely. Why the hell are we doing this? My daughter? We’re talking about our goals. No, no. Why are we doing video? Our overall strategy, right? Yeah, well, i think the question isn’t why are we doing video? The question is, what do we want our non-profit to be achieving? What do we want? What kind of impact we want to make on our cause? And then once we figure out what that goal is, then we can figure out how video is an effective part of that on. And i think that’s true for all types of content. I came to see three relatively recently from a social media marketing agency and something that i heard from a lot of my social media clients was, oh, we want a facebook page so that we can get in front of young people or we want a twitter account so that we can reach more more people who are techies on and that’s great, but that doesn’t fit with your business goals or with your non-profits goals, then what’s the point on dso i think starting with what your objective zara’s a cause what you object, stars and organization is a very important place to always be able to refer back to it because otherwise things can get way out of scope. You, khun b reaching for things that don’t really matter. Michael talks about an organization not that see three works with but that michael and see three’s cofounder danny are friends with who made a really successful video, got millions of hits online, didn’t do a thing for their cause. Nobody visited the website nobody donated, nobody volunteered so you can have a viral video that actually makes no impact on and see three is definitely in the business of creating videos that actually create impact even if they don’t go go viral. Amending the michael we’re talking about. Michael hoffman was a guest of honor non-profit radio ntcdinosaur year and is the ceo? Is that right? Yeah. The cofounder of c three years ago, um, let’s spend some time talking about getting your videos found. Yes, the best video is not worth anything. If no one watches it? Absolutely where we need to be thinking about so something that we’re seeing a lot more of lately is video that’s actually directly uploaded to facebook, and i think we’re going to see a lot more video that struck the uploaded twitter as well. Youtube is still a very important platform, and we recommend that all the non-profits that we work with, upload their videos to youtube and optimize them for youtube. Eso youtube is actually the second largest search engine after google uh, number two okay, yeah, ah well, last time i check my stats, i believe that’s still true, so you choose the second largest search engine, so if you optimize your video on youtube, if you upload all the subtitles for your video, if you add really good tags to your video that will help people when they’re searching for it on youtube, you are much more likely to have it be found either in a google search argue tube search on dh if you could take the time tio upload a spanish transcript as well, we’re seeing a lot more spanish searching happening both on youtube and on google in general. On dh so uploading a transcript in spanish and english. Yes. Where do you where do you put the transcript? There is a space when you go to the creator studio and youtube to upload your transcript so you could do it there. Okay, so those are the okay, no need for me to ask what the how do you optimize for you two? You’ve just explained it. Yeah, well, that i mean there’s, other there’s other ways to optimize for you to do so i’d say i’d say creating a title and a description for your video. That is not something that’s thinking about your audience is you develop the title and the description for your video. So a lot of times in non-profit video will see things that up, things that are uploaded that say dahna gala video twenty fourteen and that’s fine if you’re just doing it internally. But if you want anybody, any of your constituents to see it who are outside of the organization, they’re not going to find it by searching dinner gala video. So you need to be thinking about your audience as you put your video on youtube and think about what? They would be looking for when they’re searching for that video in the same vein up putting are adding a description that says that tells a story about the video and invites people teo click play on not just saying, here is a video of our dinner gala in twenty fourteen um is a really smart strategy to get many more people clicking, playin and actually watching the video, alright, any other tips strategies for getting our video found? Yeah, well, i started talking about youtube and facebook at the beginning there, so we are this is a more recent trend that we’re seeing, and i actually think non-profits were a bit ahead of this curve with the ice bucket challenge last fall because so many people were uploading video to support a cause which was a less directly to facebook, and we saw that people were able to do that because we have these super computers in our pockets now and high production video teams that are located on our phones on dso, it’s amazing that people can take such high quality video insurance so easily and with the introduction of facebook auto play video, i don’t know if your facebook news feed looks anything like mine, but mine’s covered in auto player because, like, how do we stop these damn thing? You can think i can get it out now, isn’t there? That was the strategy, but there is a there is a setting for not having autoplay, isn’t they’re? Uh, they’re not off there. Maybe i think i saw i think i’ve heard about that, i don’t know specifically, yeah, but i think over time the facebook’s goal is to have mohr auto play video showing up in your news feed if you don’t have it set on auto play than at least more video showing up in news feed because both facebook and twitter positioning themselves as hosting platforms for video, not just spaces for youtube videos to be shared s so we see that all the social networks are looking at the value of video and finding ways to position themselves as a sharing mechanism between the people who are creating the video and their constituents who they want to share them with. S o, we’re actually seeing some creators who are leaving places like vine or youtube and moving to facebook as their platform. Where there is showing their videos directly, you’re tuned to non-profit radio. Tony martignetti also hosts a podcast for the chronicle of philanthropy. Fund-raising fundamentals is a quick ten minute burst of fund-raising insights, published once a month. Tony’s guests are expert in crowdfunding, mobile giving event fund-raising direct mail and donor cultivation. Really, all the fund-raising issues that make you wonder, am i doing this right? Is there a better way there is? Find the fund-raising fundamentals archive it. Tony martignetti dot com that’s marketmesuite n e t t i remember there’s, a g before the end, thousands of listeners have subscribed on itunes. You can also learn maura, the chronicle website, philanthropy dot com fund-raising fundamentals, the better way. What else does this mean? What are the other implications of of twitter becoming, for instance, twitter becoming a a, uh, cite a site where where direct content? Yeah, video video is directly uploaded. Yeah, well, i think i think the social networks want to own your content on so the way in the way that youtube, as ownership over all the videos that are uploaded on youtube, i think twitter and facebook want a cut of that as well. On day one, they want to have really direct access to that content because they know how powerful video is and they know how effective it is moving people to action. Good. Ah, let’s talk about some of the production if some production strategies yeah, i think you’ll agree that doesn’t have to be high production value moving and compelling. Absolutely no. Okay, sure, talk about yeah, well, won. And michael and i were just talking about this earlier xero propping for the presentation. Eso won really great example that if i could point your radio listeners there you look up. Twenty fifteen dot do gooder dot tv. We’re announcing the winners of our duvette video awards awards. Yeah, so those are the where it’s the ninth annual wars they celebrate the best in video for good on die only plugged this because we had a really awesome winner in the funny for good category. So this is not the official enough, it doesn’t go out till tomorrow morning, but ah, but the winner of that category was this organization called unbound, who created a parody video between two ferns with zach galifianakis. I don’t know if you’ve ever seen those videos on she’s seen the video, okay? Marissa has yeah, production assistant here at ntc geever says, yeah, but the between two friends is ah, parody of talk shows um, and so zach galifianakis and actor and usually a celebrity who come and sit between two fake for implants and zach alfano argast basically makes fun of the other actor the whole time, pronouncing their name wrong refers teo movies that they haven’t worked in and talk about how great their work was in that movie on dh so it’s, it’s it’s very funny, it’s very dry on and so this organisation unbound created a video called between two furnaces it’s a ten minute video it’s there may be two different cameras that they used on the two different interviewee are the person, the interview and the person interviewing s o they cut back and forth a bit, but aside from that, i mean there’s a little bit of sound at the beginning. Ah there’s, no motion graphics it’s, obviously, people who are in house who are doing this, the scripts are right in front of them it’s so basic, but it’s so funny on and i think it shows that, you know, we hear from non-profits all the time we don’t have the budget, we don’t have the budget and and budget could definitely be a limitation, depending on the type of video you want to create. But i think if you’re just talking about creating a video that’s getting the word out about your organization, if you think creatively, you could really push the boundaries and create something that’s, that’s really unique and very interesting. And so that video actually got over three thousand votes in the digger awards on dh we’re really poor, proud that it’s a winner because we think it shows non-profits that you could do something simple and still have a huge success. With it, how does their work related teo video they created between two furnaces, so so they actually use the video, too? Talk about the work that unbound does s o they work in, i believe it’s twenty one different countries to help alleviate poverty, and so they talk about the work that they do during the video, but they talked about it in a very funny comedy parody way on, so they kind of poke fun at the fact that it used to be a christian based our may still be a christian based organization, but they poke fun and say, you know, so don’t you hand everybody bibles? Everybody’s got to get a bible, don’t they? On dh, they poked fun of themselves, which we think was also very brave because a lot of non-profits khun feel very scared about being vulnerable like that and, you know, poking fun at their own image are their own mission or their own values, but it it was really cool seeing non-profit, you know, taking some, being a little bit bonem herbal and and getting a bigger reward in return, okay? And i guess generally the duke latto videos are good. Examples of video well done, yes. High or low production value? Absolutely. Yeah, so we definitely have a lot of other videos that contest that are very high production. I’d say our best non-profit video winner, which was cystic fibrosis trust they have a very high production video. Both of the videos that were submitted tend to be from more non-profits who have a bit of a budget? No, they’re they’re focusing on these videos, and they’re thinking about the distribution of the videos too. So when they create the videos, they know that one of the ways they’re going to promote them is by submitting them to the do gooder awards. So it tends to be organizations that have a more thought out video strategy. Um, so we do see a lot of hyre production videos, but there’s there’s a whole range in there so i’d recommend people if they’re interested in seeing examples of great video, they’ll be able to view all of our finalists in the winners on twenty fifteen that do gooder dot tv if they want to check it out. Okay. Excellent. Yeah, we still have some time left together. Okay. What more can you tell us about video strategy fitting into our overall content strategy. Yeah, well, i think so. I really i talked a lot about the low production between two ferns are between two furnaces rather, but some other video strategy chips that were going to be sharing tomorrow in terms of easy ways to produce more video, please, on some, some of those would be a really video curation using user generated content. Eso asking your fans to send our your fans i’m very i mean, youtube creator land, we’re working with a lot of youtube creators for the do gooder awards they have their fans have been a lot of videos to them, but ask your constituents. Teo create videos to help support your cause if you give them very specific talking points, tell them about what time you what length you want your video to be encouraging them to take videos but their smartphones and send them to you our upload them using a hashtag there are a lot of platforms you can use now third party platforms that will aggregate any content that sent to a certain hashtag on dh so we see a lot more non-profits using technology like that in order to really gather a lot of user generated content easy wife, what are some of those sites eso won that i’ve used before is called woobox wooo, botox, that’s good arika and so that’s actually, you can create absolute can embed on websites or you could add, is an extension to your facebook page. It’s very easy to set up on and you could you could do something like a hashtag contest that you could do, you know, hash tag non-profit radio and everyone who submitted a photo or tweet with a hashtag non-profit radio would have their content entered into this contest. Andi, it gives you all the tools basically run a contest from there another one another one of the good that’s, the main one that i’ve used in the one that i’ve used, not so much for your contest, but just just sift through content is called tag board uh, yeah on and so that’s a really good one. It it has a beautiful display. It’s totally free to use on dh i’ve used it a lot, especially when so for something like ntcdinosaur you create a tag board for fifteen and tc and see all the all of the stuff that people have submitted under, you know hashtag fifteen ntcdinosaur filter out videos, photos, tweeds, etcetera also, by the way, thank you for shouting out hashtag non-profit radio e do it often enough it’s! A pleasure to hear someone else’s thank you sort of well it’s reminding me of storify yes, but it’s maur automated yes, it’s more automated. So store five more you would take your pulling, you pull the trigger on story so this was this would be automated. So anything that kayman under that hashtag would be in there something like woobox would give you the control. Teo, sift out any content that you didn’t want to end up in there. So if someone was spamming you, someone is family. You could delete it, but something like tag board wouldn’t because a free service you wouldn’t have that, that kind of control. But i do. I find that it’s great, especially for conferences or things where if i’m live tweeting an event and i want to see it everything going on an event in one place. I use tide board to look at that. Okay, good. All right. So a little more time. Ok, tell me some more stuff that you haven’t told me yet. Yeah, sure. So tomorrow, let’s, see what else we’re talking about. A fact about video tips and tricks. We’ve talked about distribution a bit. Um, i guess i’d say some more ideas for generating video for your non-profit ah, that aren’t as high production argast high cost. We’ve been doing a lot of google hangouts recently, those great they’re awesome automatic video was completed it right at the end yet, so yeah, in order to do that, you have to do the google hangout on air. If you do, a google hangout on area video will be automatically upload to youtube. It looks great. It makes it so much easier. I know, especially for me. As a content manager, i’m looking for anything that will automate my process for me a bit and take away some of that time that that i would be taking to upload a video and optimize it. And so you could do all that in the front end through google plus, when you set up the hangout, um and it’s really great we’ve been doing hangouts we’ve been doing interviews with people in the non-profit community. So we did one a few weeks ago with jeff brooks of future fund-raising now, we did want a few months ago with joe waters and keep the lower miller on dh yeah, we’ve been really enjoying doing the girl hangouts on, and it makes it really easy to dio these quick, quick little powers with people and to be able teo transfer the video back and forth between users in a way that looks really advanced looked really polished but is very cheap and easy to dio it’s free and it’s easy today i’ve done some non-profit radio hangouts. Yeah, cool, yeah, especially when i see somebody or something that’s going to attract a lot of attention and comments. Yeah, so then we get people chatting or they’re coming into the video absolutely great, yeah, that’s so cool and the other thing i’ve been doing is webinars too, which i know is so old school, but i think especially in the age of content strategy, creating things that people that you can have people exchange their email address for in order to give them some content, so something like a webinar where you have to give your email to sign up is really valuable to non-profits we talk about condoms strategy, we talk a lot about subscription on making sure that you can have a way to collect people’s email addresses s o that you actually have their content contact information for the long term on i say a lot of times i’m not the lunar says this, but on i tell non-profits a lot that when you are building your community on facebook or on twitter, on youtube, even your but you’re building a house on rented land. Oh, and you don’t really own those network. So you know facebook could shut down tomorrow, and then your community of hundreds of thousands of likes is gone. But if you have people’s email addresses, it’s a much more secure way to stay in touch with the people who you wantto communicate within the community that you’re building. S o we always recommend that people build and email database and find ways to drive people to sign up for for your email lists and how can we use video toe? Do that so video, actually, so this is special for non-profits if you’re a part of the youtube for non-profits program, you are one of the select few on youtube who can actually take people from your video to a third party websites. So not another youtube video on and so you could take people directly to your email sign up form from a video. Ok, which is something that for-profit scant. Do what you have to be a member of your youtube for non-profit program the youtube non-profit program okay, find that sign up for it. Yeah, youtube dot com slash non-profits okay, very easy. You could drive people to third party use. A third party went from your video from your video. It was embedded clicking? Yes, exactly, yeah, and there’s a lot of other. There are a lot of other benefits to the youtube non-profit program tio they provide training and resource is especially for non-profits you get access to these things called youtube spaces, which they started creating for their youtube creators? S o they’re basically production studios that air good, especially for non-profits and their special youtube creators who want to be creating high quality video but don’t have the studios to do it themselves on and so i would say, look into the youtube non-profit program, there are a lot there are other benefits, too. I’m just signing up and it’s it’s free from non-profits to join, okay, we have another minute or two, okay, you’re loaded with information, i’m not looking like you hold back. No, i don’t remember everything from my from my presentation tomorrow i’m trying to think of anything in the topics that we haven’t covered already. Actually, the thing that we’re opening with that i’m very excited about is that buzzfeed obama video did you see that when i was making the rounds on facebook? Eso obama did a video with buzzfeed a few weeks ago that was used to encourage people to sign up for obama care by the february fifteenth deadline on and i thought that when i saw the video it’s like, gosh, this is so smart and this is going to be so this is going to be in my webinars and presentations for the next six months because it really showed that the white house understood who their audience was for that specific campaign s o they needed young people to sign up for obamacare in order to offset that a lot of people who were, you know beyond their twenties and thirties already signed up for obamacare, which is great, but they needed more young people to sign up to offset the medical costs of older people would already saying that we need help. The young people, yeah, the older but of course all the young people think nothing bad is ever gonna happen to them. They’re never going to die, so none of them were signing up. Eso aza let’s, last ditch effort the white house used busby to reach that audience on. They created a video i think it had within the first day it had over one hundred thousand shares. Had millions of hits on buzzfeed. Millions of hits on the thehe four double care act website on dh. So it was really the healthcare dot gov website, i should say on and so it was successful for the obama campaign. I looked at the stats and although i couldn’t obviously on my end, i couldn’t see specifically what factors led to this increase, but they had eight million people sign up for on healthcare dot com that govern in the last six months. What do you think? What do you think contributed to this? Well, they had. So i was going to say that eight million people saying up in the last six months, and they had one million people sign up in the last week after the video was released. So so that it was one eighth of the total sign ups, which seems pretty significant. Was it an outstanding video? So it was an outstanding video because they placed it on a network. That was really it was really targeted towards the young people who think the lights just went out in, uh, and in the science fair. But non-profit radio perseveres never own lights. We have our own electric. Unless they shut the electricity off. We’re fine. Yeah. All right. Here. We still can. You still see us in camp? Okay, wait. Persevere here. We would shut it down around us. Yeah. Means no, keep going. All right. So the name of radio but shows the right channel treyz so they knew who their audience was. First of all, they weren’t trying to reach all people. Ah, latto things were for non-profits is that? Oh, were for we’re caused for the general public and lord knows you’ve got to know your audience. They had a targeted audience. They reach him on the right channel and they use the right kind of messaging to they are on ly linked to the website once in the actual description of the videos at the very top. Ah, and then in the whole video itself, obama on lee said, you know, you have to sign up by february fifteenth, one time it was done as a joke. So and the whole rest of radio was just funny. Interesting share a bowl content. So it was really great. It was very humorous is successful. A successful video. We’re gonna leave it there. Great. Trump theo trends and tips to help you get found in two thousand fifteen elizabeth what is changing balance between content, strategy and ceo? So one big thing is changing the balance and that’s basically the introduction of smartphones. Yes, holding up her smartphone? Yes, for podcast listeners, we don’t have the benefit of the video she’s holding up their iphones. This ubiquitous smartphone is really changing everything in terms of how people discover information. So how people search for information, how people consume information and that’s it’s changing a lot of things with with regards to search engine optimization. And so if you just think about how much how much time people spend on their smartphones now, so now more than well over fifty percent of the u s adult population has smartphones, and over sixty three percent used them to regularly to go online, and the average smartphone owner will spend will look at their phone one hundred fifty times a day for like two hundred twenty one functions on their phone today. And so when you think about that and you think about how much time people are spending on facebook, and on other aps, they’re spending a very significant part amount of time consuming information on a full variety of that can’t even stop touching yours. Keep touching your phone e i want i want to demonstrate all the acts i have here on my phone, but so we spend so much time interacting with interacting with our with information through our phones and that’s changed so much so if you think about six years ago, if you wanted to find information about something you would put your first reflex was probably to go to google right now, you may go to pinterest to find certain types of information if i want to find ah recipe here, i want to find an art project i can work i can work on or i want to find interesting gardening activities. The first place i’ll go is interest if i want to get answers to other things, the first place i’ll go to search for information, maybe youtube if i want to see what’s happening with current events, i’ll go to twitter if i want to find and so those are just the social media apse that we tend to turn to. And where we spent a lot of time, so twenty five percent of time spent on the internet today is spent on facebook that’s very, very remarkable twenty five percent, twenty five percent of time spent on the internet in the united states is spent on face just on the phone. Now, just for on the internet is spent on facebook. Yes, and so millennials say that their first source of in front of news or the first source of information about, like breaking news that’s happening, they learn about it from facebook. So you think about all of the different social media apse that we’re interacting with on a regular basis, and then you also can think about the different acts that we use for just for finding a restaurant or for finding houses for sale in your neighborhood. There’s so many different maps that are available and so, with the rise of the smartphone and there’s been kind of a fragmentation of how people find an information on the web, so that has affected the volume of content coming to websites through search engine optimization or through organic searches. And so so that’s, very significant, but then of course, the search engines themselves are adapting their algorithms to take this new reality into account as well, and so they are looking at there they’re looking at a lot more factors than they used teo and certainly a lot of the traditional search engine optimization, traditional ceo things that we think of are still very important. So of course, making sure that you’ve got the right back and configuration on your website so that as soon as you published new content it’s, the search engines are notified its index, and it gets found that remains important. And still it’s estimated that around fifty percent of traffic to websites is still coming from organic searches, so it’s still important, but they are taking into account social cues so and from what they find on social media. And so this has been something that several organizations have proven, basically, that that google at least, is looking for recognition or looking for mentions on twitter and on facebook, very nufer said, this is very new, and this is something using twitter and they’re not they’re not really so yes, they seem to be paying attention to what’s to what’s being said on twitter and also on facebook and it’s more about mentioning an organization’s name. So how many times is an organization mentioned and that gives them an indicator of the level of authority that this particular organization has in their field? And then if an organization has has strong authority in their field than their content that’s published is likely to get it’s likely to bump up the ranking of that so that’s a that’s an interesting piece of this and there, and there are other elements as well, but definitely the search engines are also adapting to this new reality and a few other things that are probably worth mentioning. Are there also rewarding websites that are mobile friendly and that’s very much related to this whole idea of consuming information through mobile phones? So websites that are mobile friendly are both getting our rights hyre entire, but also now when you search for something and this is this has been going on for weeks now you’re touching your phone with e i wish i could pick it up, just demo it, right? Well, everybody’s, not everybody doesn’t have the benefit of video. A lot of this is podcast listening. So i don’t know, but so but now when you search for something on a search engine on your phone, then the results will show whether it’s mobile friendly or not so it will actually list mobile friendly or not so you can skip the websites that are not mobile friendly, so and then they’re also prioritizing so the mobile friendly peace is important. Also, security is important, so there’s several different updates that they’re making to their algorithms to kind of to adapt to this new reality. So we’ll be talking about that tomorrow, too, okay? And the engines we’re talking about are not only google, but yahoo yahoo serious search search player or not, really they’re they’re working hard at it, but i think they’re proportion of the search market is still still pretty small compared to google. How in being a swell, pretty small, small google is still google is still the the nineties ninety i mean, in terms of percentages of search is done within with with an internet search engine. Not not considering yeah, who are you or yeah, youtube without going into the content youtube, you mentioned pinterest without doing that, google is still google is still by far by far and i don’t have exact numbers, but google is still by far the leader. They say that youtube is the second most popular search engine. Okay, which is interesting do we know the proportion of fired-up global search vs within within a content provide within a within a social site search? So google vs searching in youtube and pinterest and searching in twitter we know that proportion of the amglobal versus the the channel searches e i don’t actually have exact statistics with me, but certainly pinterest is up and coming grow in terms of a search engine, so more and more people are turning to pinterest and i think pinterest is a really interesting case study also, just because they’re they have done this amazing job of getting there, and this kind of brings it back to one of the topics that will be talking about tomorrow also, which is community generated content and how powerful community generated content can be for a non-profits overall content strategy, but pinterest is an interesting example of that because they have seventy million users and they have been able to get their users basically, too. Index all of this content from across the web, but not so google indexed uses its its bots and its algorithms to index content where is pinterest is drawing on its users and on the way that they understand information and what users think is relevant and valuable and where, how users classify that information, and so it’s a very intelligent way of indexing all of that content, because it’s basically pulling together the opinions of millions and millions of people, and so i think that will seem pinterest become a more and more important search engine in the future, and certainly their visual searches very engaging, a swell. What kind of non-profit do around community created content? That’s a lot of what we’ll talk about tomorrow and let’s. Share some some tips for strategies for engaging your community to do that. Absolutely, these weigh all have multiple communities, volunteers, donors, vendor’s maybe even boardmember sze other volunteers? Yeah. How do we how do we get them engaged? Absolutely. So there are there. I would say they’re kind of two different angles to take on this one that will be talking about tomorrow is building community generated content into your infrastructure and that is something that we’ve seen work well e well, for many different non-profits and the center for non-profit excellence is a great example of this they have, and i know let erica talk a little bit more about this, too, but just to name a couple of examples to respond directly to your question, they have a volunteer connection section of the website, and that section of the website allows non-profits to post volunteer opportunities and allows community members to say, i want to take that coming that volunteer opportunity and connect and connect directly with that non-profit it has a non-profit directory that non-profits can update themselves, it has a grantmaker directory that grantmaker is khun submit information to it has a new section that the community of non-profits in new mexico can contribute news, too, and it has a community training section as well. So if there any trainings that are happening beyond what the senator non-profit excellence does, then people can submit that information as well. And there are i’m forgetting many other things, erica, you can conjunction here, there’s also a page where non-profits can post there needs for goods like computers or other donated items, and where the community and businesses composed items that they want to donate to non-profits. Another piece is where individuals or groups of individuals can post ways that they want a, donate their time or volunteer for non-profits and it’s, very much community building. And as you said, elizabeth, really a community driven mean, the content wouldn’t content only in these sections and only comes from the community. Absolutely. Postings for volunteer opportunities and volunteer needs on dh volunteer. I want to volunteer. Yeah, okay. Like what you’re hearing a non-profit radio tony’s got more on youtube, you’ll find clips from stand up comedy tv spots and exclusive interviews catch guests like seth gordon. And and the news all of the news on the home page that you see right when you land on the website all comes from the community as well, and we really wanted to highlight this as a as an opportunity for non-profits because content strategy is so is becoming so, so important for every non-profit oh, and you’re content strategy becomes so important online because it helps you actually push it provides content that you can push out to all of these aps and so to meet people where they’re at. It also helps boost the volume of content on your website and the key words that you can then deal that you then have to be indexed, and it broadens your net of how you can be found. But it also becomes really is absolutely critical to engagement, so bringing new people in bringing a new supporters, engaging existing supporters, building loyalty with existing supporters and then helps a really helps when organizations launched their campaigns than it helps those campaigns be really effective. And so, but often the one of the biggest challenges that non-profits face is having the resource is for a really robust content strategy. It takes a lot of time and it takes a lot of creativity to keep that content strategy going, and so some of our client, we do a lot of trainings and a lot of non-profits will come to us and say, you know what i know it’s important, but it’s hard for us to dio it’s hard for us to get more than one article published on our website every three weeks or what? What advice do you have? And you’re after one of the smaller midsize shops? That’s it doesn’t have the resources to spend a lot of time, but there still are some things you can do. So what advice is absolutely that bring your community in so find ways to get your community to contribute content. Don’t think about your your content strategy is just coming from one person or the person that you may have fifty percent of one person’s time to manage your entire your entire communications strategy, right? That’s? Not enough so think about can you bring in your volunteers? Ask your volunteers to contribute content, other staff members to contribute content you’re bored to contribute, content your clients to community to contribute. Content other community members to contribute content and what types of interest of of infrastructures or kind of spaces within your website can you create tau host all of this information and inspire people to share and so there’s so many what is appropriate for each non-profit really depends on the non-profits mission in-kind of what makes sense for their community, but we would encourage every single non-profit to think about how can you get your community involved and and bring them in to be a part of that content generation strategy? Erica, what have you seen some of the outcomes among the community that communities that are contributing well, what? What we’ve seen, we initially started the first area that that we opened up for non-profits to post their own content was the job section of our website and on our and we’ve seen a huge increase in visits to our website, and where are our website appears in different search engine results and an increase in the number of non-profits that air posting these listings, but we also we receive so much feedback from the non-profit saying that they’ve received a lot of of really good job applicants. And so the same goes across for volunteer connection. We receive a lot of positive feedback from the non-profits who might not have, um, the timer, the resource is two to promote their volunteer opportunities, so allowing them to post them on our website, they’re receiving more traffic and more volunteer applicants. Elizabeth what? We have another, like, five minutes or so together. What other strategies can we share for, uh, getting found is basically what we’re talking about, right? Absolutely. What else haven’t i asked you? Have you have you share? So certainly so one thing that’s really important and you in looking at the infrastructure of your website and that will help this whole content strategy work is making sure that the website is social media optimized, and by that we mean that when that any piece of content that somebody wants to share on their social network, they should be able to just click a button and immediately share it. And you would be surprised how many organizations do not have their website properly configured so they may have put a simple, sure social sharing. Yeah, and so you can use a tool like add this you add that to your website, but you’ve also you’ve gotta have the meta tags that are pulled correctly, configured so that it pulls the right thing, so if you so, when somebody clicks to share on twitter, it should be set up and then and this is something that you really just have to ask your web master to do, but it should be set up so that you click to share on twitter and it’s going to pull the title of the article a shortened link, and then it should say via at your twitter handle so that you get recognition for that content that’s coming out on facebook, it should pull the right thumb now image associated with the article, a blurb about the article and a link back to the website, and you’d be surprised how often we see that that’s not actually configured like that, so someone will try to share something on facebook or you’ll try to share something on facebook and it’ll pull the logo of the organisation instead of the thumbnail of the article. Or it’ll pull the name of the organisation instead of the page that you’re trying to share so that’s a really important pieces that social, the social media optimization piece that’s a great one and great that’s a great tip toe. Everybody could understand it. And it’s it’s not incredibly technical know and it’s, not something that’s going to take your what is your web master too long to dio but it’s something that’s absolutely critical for doing two d’oh, and then another piece is make sure that your website is responsive because if if somebody is, you could be working really, really hard too create all this content put this content out across the web, and then if somebody clicks kliks through from facebook to your website because they’ve seen this link to an article that they’re really interested in and suddenly they can’t read it on their phone because your website is not responsive and mobile adapting to the size of your phone that’s a frustrating experience that they’re gonna have with your organization and they’re going to be less likely to come back so absolutely your website should be responsive and well, you said earlier, if you it’s not mobile responsive that’s going to hurt you in search results? Absolutely, it’ll hurt your search results and it also hurt it will hurt engagement with the organization, but also at the time of launching your campaign, so you’re asking people to take action. So maybe you’re launching a fund raising campaign or you’re launching a campaign to get people to sign up for an event or to take advocacy action if they’re clicking through from social media and it’s not responsive, they are not very likely to donate to take action or to sign register for your event. So you’re basically shooting yourself in the foot. You don’t have it so much trouble forget i’ll find something else. Yeah, absolutely so that’s that’s really critical, and if we have time, do we have another minute or so? And then one more piece that that we often get questions from organizations about two is the campaign piece, and that should be a piece of every organizations content strategy. So you’re putting out your regulate your articles and you’re doing a lot of messaging on social media, but periodically you need to launch very specific campaigns asking people, mobilizing people around a very specific goal because often people don’t take action unless you ask pacific also a specific call. To action. So that specific fund-raising campaign that made that ideally lasts, you know, five to seven days it’s a short campaign, you have a very specific goal, and you can just message repeatedly during that five to seven day period asking your community to help mobilize and to help you meet that goal and that’s something that we see too many organizations kind of you may go for a year or two years with all of their messaging and their articles, and they don’t launch campaigns and it’s the campaign radcampaign time that you see the return on the investment of all of the time that you’ve invested in creating this content. So the campaigns are absolutely critical. I’ve seen something that said, every piece of content you create should have some call to action ultimately, even if it’s just a simple share, but maybe it’s sign up for the email list that’s related to this issue? Yes, something in every every music content. Yes. Absolutely, absolutely. Okay, we’re gonna leave it there. All right. Thank you, elizabeth. Erica, thank you very much. I’m not sure she listens to the podcast on her way to work as director of development, raising special kids in phoenix, arizona. So now she knows who she exactly is. Yes, it’s you came, she says, by the time i get to work, i’m usually fired-up about fund-raising today i listened to your peer-to-peer thirty report and giving days show, and i was secretly a little glad about the traffic on the freeway so i could hear the entire show. And what questions should they be asking she’s principle of lauren girardin consulting and we talked it ntcdinosaur non-profit technology conference and you’re content strategy. Once you’ve decided where to be, what should you do there? How do you launch and stay consistent with your message on your mission who’s responsible for that? Brett meyer is director of strategy for think shout and katie caress is director of online communications at the humane society legislative fund. Here’s my interview with lauren girardin on emerging social media welcome to tony martignetti non-profit radio coverage of the non-profit technology conference twenty fifteen we’re hosted by entender non-profit technology network with convention center in austin, texas. My guest is lauren girardin. She is a marketing and communications strategist. Lauren girardin consultant loren welcome back! Hi durney it’s, good to see you you’re were together in auntie si twenty fourteen. Yeah, we were all right. Your topic this year is don’t panic how to embrace emerging social media with infinite majesty and calm that’s, right? Very important avoiding shiny objects syndrome in social media is that not true? It is to a point i like to encourage people to avoid shiny object syndrome, so using something just because it’s new isn’t the right approach, but the idea is to experiment bravely. So by avoiding things that are new, we often miss out on what opportunities there might be. So if we experiment a little bit doesn’t have to be a full commitment, we can actually find out a new way of doing things are being noticed or of reaching new audiences like that phrase experimenting bravely, but not full not-for-profits it’s experimental before we start to talk about some of the some of the sites that we will like snapchat, tinder and whisper and secret, which i’m very much looking forward to because three of those four i don’t know. How do we evaluate when the next one comes out, whether whether it makes sense for us to to experiment bravely. So the question that we’re often asking ourselves is the wrong question. The question we ask is, should we be using snapchat? Should we be using tinder? That’s not the right question, so we actually to think about what the right question is on the right questions will depend on your organization, but very broadly are what are you trying to achieve? Who are you trying to connect with and engage? What do you trying tto learn? Because a lot of these emerging social channels give us away to learn something new and also then what do you actions real asking people to take in? Is that inaction that they can do because of that channel? So you have to think about the right questions as you’re evaluating these new social channels, all right? Hyre is it possible to be well, who should be? Who should be involved in these in these questions and answer sessions for new channels? So that’s a really good question, their school already only now, i hadn’t actually minutes, and i’m already good question. I know i hadn’t thought of that one before, because when i think of experimenting bravely, i think of sort of the the person looking out into the rising on their own it’s almost it’s, not an isolated practice, but it’s something to do that doesn’t need a committee that doesn’t need a big meeting that doesn’t need a big strategy behind it. And so i think the person that should be involved is the person that’s most comfortable on these channels. So someone who has used these channels for their own personal reasons. So sometimes the first step of experiment on bravely is to use the channels for yourself and then use them for your organization and then to bring it to people who are open minded about new channels who khun see potential rather than seeing negativity. So folks who are involved with your audience is directly are often the best people tohave rather than folks who are not out in the community. Okay, so maybe some of your program, your program, folks, program, people policy, people, fundraisers, anyone who is engaging with people and who could actually ask folks, they take out your phone, told me the apse that you have there. Let me talk to you about the kind of information you’d like to see from our organization on these new channels sometimes it’s really that anecdotal evidence that can help us make brave decisions about social media? Okay, anything else you want to suggest about the the, the general and the and the evaluation before we get into some some actual channel? Yeah, thie evaluation on the newer channels is is really tough because non-profits are looking for metrics we’re looking for measurement, we’re looking for numbers to make our case, and a lot of these channels just simply do not provide those numbers. They either don’t have any analytics built into their system or the analytics they have are not particularly revealing for non-profit so one of the things we need to allow ourselves is a little bit of uncertainty in this evaluation. We may never know the exact demographics of the people that we’re reaching on these new channels on dh, so what we need to do is just take a guess and start playing around really, if we’re not looking, teo, engage buy-in our younger say, tulani als should we still be looking at emerging channels? I argue millennials or younger, even right now, all right, you know, i would argue, yes, because you know, a lot of people say, oh, it’s, just teenagers that you’re using these and that’s what we said about facebook when it launched is, oh, this is just something for college kids. What does this have to do with me in my organization? And very quickly that khun change and snapchats a great example of that? The growth of the user base and snapchat is just astronomical in the past year, whether it’s going to stick around or not is another question, but we have to be nimble in social media, so sometimes it is about looking for what’s hot now and thinking, if there’s a way that we could make it useful for us because it’s really about it being his form. Okay, you know what, before we talk about the newer ones, yeah, let’s talk about the venerated one facebook is it really falling out of favor? I mean, i hear i hear a lot of people complaining considerably about they’re organic reach, having declined precipitously on facebook. Well, facebook is changing because facebook’s audience is changing, so facebook’s audience has gotten a lot older. It’s, one of the fastest age groups growing on facebook, is you know, in their sixties or older and so facebook is adapting to their audience, and they’re also adapting to the realities that they need to make money on dso for non-profits what we have to do is think about instead of facebook being our main channel, it’s been one of many and how are we designing hunting specifically that can work on facebook instead of putting out everything we have and being upset that it’s not working and some of that will be about being a little less self promotional, facebook is dialing down the self promotion that it allows people to share. And so if, if it doesn’t let us put that information out, either we have to find somewhere else. To put it all, we have to put out different information on facebook. Do you find your client’s questioning? Yes, facebook’s value? Yes, absolutely. Part of it is they can see the hard numbers changing, and part of it is that it continues of you’re the organic regional yeah, the organic reach Numbers and and 4 smaller numbers it’s requiring more effort and then there’s the question of will if i have a limited capacity myself in my organization, where can my time be better spent for better results? I think facebook still has a value if you’re not on facebook can affect your credibility, people will go well, are you really serious than if you’re not on facebook or twitter? But we can dial down our efforts there make sure the efforts were how much we’re going to devote tio and then take that time and spend it in a new way and see if we can find something else to add to our catalogue of social media repertoire. Eso let’s talk about something let’s talk about some of the newer ones tinder when what’s tinder tinder is a dating app, but it’s not like i have yes, everyone has that reaction. I don’t think of it as a social media, right? Okay, yes, you swipe left for somebody you like? Yeah, i can’t believe you’re not on tinder, okay? I’m married and i well, i think that would be something that we’re gonna stop here. Maybe not that much different, but okay tinder. So you swipe one way for somebody you want to see. But it’s also geo located? Yeah, it sze showing people who are close to you. Yeah, yeah, yeah, and so you swipe. And if you both swipe yes, then you get access to message each other through tinder. So then you can set up a coffee or a date or something else like that. And tinder, you would think what good is a dating app for non-profits? How could you possibly use it? But it turns out there are few non-profits who views it really creatively. So what are they doing? So one organization used to match rescue dogs with people in manhattan, so they put up profiles for rescue dogs. And if you decided that you like that dog, you could then message the organization and take the dog on a walk or fostered in your home if you weren’t sure you were ready to adopt a dog or straight up atop the dog. And so they did this funds small tinder experiment to figure out if there was a way to use social media like tender not just in her, but other dating outstanding. Could you can you shout out the name of the organization? You know, e doing? I do not, but i will. I will tweet it. And find it later. Okay, it’s, in my presentation on friday. That and i’m kind of surprised that tinder dot com would allow would allow that that so that’s the cabin you that’s actually, i applaud them for that. It’s. Admirable. Well, so that’s the caveats. So tinder has a revenue model, they actually ask people to pay money for their service, and they also have advertising. So this is all considered advertising. So when these channels first come out tinder or what have you there is a kind of a beautiful period where you can get away with a little bit more and so now they’re becoming more formal. So the gap actually just tried to run a tinder advertising campaign, and they got shut down because they didn’t ask permission. So if non-profits are looking to do this, you should definitely always check to make sure that you’re allowed to have either fake profiles or personas or something like that. Okay, gap just want to show people in jeans. Yeah, or other tinder wanted them to pay. Yeah. Okay, but i do admire that they would allow it, you know, like it’s saying that we don’t take ourselves a ll that seriously that we won’t allow that we want to rescue dog matchup. Yeah, and, you know, and even these can be serious topics. There’s, another organization, amnesty international. They did a campaign to bring attention to human trafficking on tinder. It was very serious campaign. What do they do? You remember? Yeah. There was a series of photos and the women got first was a photo of a beautiful woman. And then the next photo you saw of her, she had some bruises. And then there was another photo where she looked even more abused. And it was about not all women have the same rights as women who are using tender, you know, it’s very popular in manhattan. It’s very popular in the us and also a couple of other countries. So it it allowed this serious topic to come through, but it made sense when you were seeing it there that not all women get to choose their partner or how their partner treats them or if they want to leave their relationship. Great education campaign soas faras. You know, tinder is still open to those types of discussions. But with your caveat that you better discuss it with them. Yeah? Or or just be really quick. Don’t put out a press release. We’re not recommending underhanded behavior. Never sneaky. Whisper what’s whisper about so whisper is one of these gossip paps, so whisper secret you quack are these abs that you can use to put up an anonymous post usually text base, and then you can just complain about something that you have to complain about. You can tell someone else’s secrets or one of your own, a lot of people use it when they’re feeling isolated or lonely, to talk about their their deep feelings they would never share on facebook with people who know they are on dh. These are really interesting apse because and has that anonymity or that perceived anonymity there’s some question on security on the steps of course, ok, but there and there that none of these ups or doing anything particularly grand, but a lot of them, you’re back, for example, is geo located and so it’s very popular with college students and there’s a lot of complaining about professors and classes and what’s going on in campus, and so they’re actually very riel social conversations happening on some of these. You cock in particular had a lot of college students talking about race during all of the protest that were going on last year and, you know, there’s a question of whether or not non-profit should be part of those conversations happening on these aps. And are you seeing non-profit using secret? Yeah, and and you quack also, yeah. So there’s one example and i believe it’s it’s anand’s organization. And i think it was in ireland that used one of these aps to it was secret because they were playing on the whole idea of secrets. And what they did was they asked men in there because that was their audience. Two send a picture in on their name and then, with their permission, put their photo and name up on secret and said, i have hiv and it’s no secret with their name and photo. And so that’s. Why kind of turning the tables on secret, really raising awareness about the stigma of living with hiv and aids? I’m telling my own, i’m sharing my yeah, and it’s and it’s, not a secret it’s actually something that’s part of me. And so they wanted to change the narrative about hiv aids sigma in their community and it was really experimental and, you know, a lot of times it’s experimental. Stuff gets you good media coverage and get you really interesting attention andan. Other examples get gas. When they were having all those problems in ray’s, colgate university, the professor’s banded together, so not a non-profit but non-profit could have been involved in this, and i sometimes think, should have they banned it each other, and the professor’s took over you. Cack colgate is a non-profit, the university that’s, true, that’s, that’s, a good thing you called me here in the u s tonto and the professor’s got together, and they took over the conversation and put out more positive messages on the app to overwhelm the conversations around racism that were boiling and boiling. And they decided they wanted to tamp it down, and they used the app in the way it was meant to be used in order to become part of the conversation and to change that conversation as well. Outstanding. Yeah, that was you back, right? Yeah, all right. Quarrel? That water is one that’s been around for a few years. I do a very little bit with quarrel, but so it’s spelled qu o r a right. What do you seeing non-profit potential what’s the potential there. You know there’s there’s two sides to this one. We have to stop your i’m sorry. Yeah. Let’s. Describe what quarrel. I’ll leave it for you because you’ll be more articulate tonight. Let’s tell. Make sure you understand what quarry corps is one of those question and answer site. So anyone can go on, make a profile and post a question, and then the community of core participants can answer that question, and they can do it seriously. They could be a little silly, but for the most part, cora folks take themselves seriously and it’s a professional venu kind of much like lincoln. So people do use it as a point of credibility. Okay, so now the non-profit potential, so they’re non-profit potential is in-kind twofold. So you have the people inside your organization. You have your spokespeople in your leaders, your staff, your board. They can go on and answer questions that are relevant to what your non-profits doing. And they can have that personal that personal view, really showing people that your organization has a lot of different messengers and having those answers, i come from people inside your organization, then speaks to transparency. So you’re both building up the credibility of your employees, but then also building up the transparency incredibility of your organization and charity water, which is so often held up as an example of an organization that does things well on social media actually did this a few years ago, where the ceo went on to kora and asked you answered people’s questions about the organization, which now the tech sector folks are big into kora on silicon valley types and so charity water knew exactly what they were doing that’s one of their audiences and so getting on there and reaching out directly to those people one on one answers was a great move on their part and really helped advance their prestige in the community. So i’m sure you can search for different topics and insert yourself into conversations that you believe your work merits being. Yeah, absolutely. So even if the question isn’t about your organization, you could jump right into the conversation and there are a lot of social chat apps and websites like this, so read it, which, you know a lot of people are talking about has very similar functions, and tumbler has a cuban eight feature as well that organizations i’ve seen use to answer questions and the one one of the nice things about tumblers that those questions can be asked anonymously, but then answer publicly so it’s kind of like a dear abby column latto comedia i didn’t know this feature of tumbler whose question answer yeah, it’s i’ve seen a lot of organizations that work in reproductive and sexual health used this feature because there is that idea that you want some privacy about these questions you wouldn’t go to mom and dad. Perhaps so planned parenthood uses this feature, as does sex, etcetera, which is run by answer out of rutgers university. Interesting. Okay, i only know the microblogging. The future of tumbler. Yeah. Okay. Interesting is always to get your get your organization in conversations and also to show that you have people who are relevant. I mean, that could help for media, perhaps if they if yeah, you’re showing that you have expertise? Well, maybe a voice in a subject. Yeah. Medium a google and find an answer in court and see that your organization five. That answer and they might come calling to interview you for an article they were writing. It’s it. It does establish your credibility in your knowledge on the subject. So within quarter especially you can answer a lot of questions on a particular tag or subject, and people will start seeing you as an expert in that area. I just learned that tweets are going to start being indexed by google. Searched. Yeah. There. There, there. Finally found a happy agreement. Somehow someone must have had a really good meeting. You has been in discussion for a long time, and they couldn’t agree. So good. The rumors. Yeah, yeah, because, you know, everyone wants an insider social media inside. I read a lot. I well, well informed. Yeah, yeah. I’m a sponge for information on this. I have a lot of tabs open in my browser’s, so they so they have been trying, you believe? Okay, yeah. Everyone wants to become the next search index. So actually, some of the apse that i’m going to be talking about on friday, some of them have these aims to become the google of images on do you know a lot of them are also trying to cultivate more positive messages to come through in those ways, too? So there’s fierce competition for for being the next hub for for these audiences and for search? You know, facebook has been trying to do that for a while, twitter as well, google plus, which is just changed itself again. All right, yeah, google plus seems to be struggling. It seems it has a high user base, they’ve got a lot of users, but the engagement numbers for that i’ve seen have been very low on dso just this last week, they’ve announced some new staff changes and that they’re going to be a fraction ing their google plus ap into a couple of different services, perhaps to target specific audiences. Better look for different types of engagement so remains to be seen how and if that can be relevant again. Okay, yeah. Um now i already have a session from from here. It ntcdinosaur where we talked about oppcoll snapchat pretty well and read it on tumbler although you just you drop something up to read it, but i didn’t know what other what other sites can weigh acquaint people with gosh, i wanted to talk about it, but that’s that’s my own obsession. I mean, what about feed, feed and kick there’s ask f m, you know, there’s every for every person, there seems to be a new social through these three foot together ascot from feeding kick no, you know, they’re each one is kind of its own niche, the one that i’m thinking about which i would love to see non-profits use and i haven’t seen that means it is called plague. Okay, well, piela yeah, it’s actually spelled the way that you think it is that such a stream saying for social right now, like feed, which is th e d all right, so this could be cutting edge and emerging news. I, you know, it’s about plague, i just think it’s really interested in what? I’m going to spread the plague about plague. So plague is an app that you can use to spread information so you join you don’t have to create an account, you’re immediately part of a network you don’t a friend people, you’re already part of the potential play. And you i can put a piece of information up and four people near you so it’s all that geo location can receive that information from you, and they decide whether that information is worth spreading or not. And if they decide it’s worth spreading from that one person, it goes out to form more people. And then those people decide if it’s worth spreading and it spreads. This information spreads like a plague exponential and yes, like so if you put out good information, your information can travel. So if it’s something that people like it khun spread as faras the plague network users go so it’s still newish so there’s, you know there’s not as many users in some parts of the u s and some parts of the world but if you can get a piece of information out there it could be very engaging. And i haven’t seen a non-profit use it yet. So i want to see who’s gonna be first across that line very short pieces of information or going to be several hundred words like a log post or or no it’s, not it’s. Mobile audiences so it would be short and then you can also do image is a swell so you can mix it up, but i would keep it short just because the mobile audience tends toe have short attention spans, right? Cool. What anything else you wanna tell us about plague advice for the for the for the the first for the first brave experimenter uganda, you’re going to want to hook it to something that’s happening now something that people are talking about now. So whether it’s an event or a gn anniversary something a current event in the news, i wouldn’t you know it wouldn’t use the dress that that we’re all talking about. Now the blue and gold were black and blue dress, whatever it was, but something that people are talking about now, because that’s going to be the kind of thing that people want to spread, that people want to pay attention to something about trending, trending or timely start? Yeah, and you should always think about doing that with your content because that’s really how people spread information is by whatever they’re already interested in. Okay, now i’m out of touch with black and gold are blue, like i don’t know. I don’t know the dress conversation, not as much of a hurry. I don’t have the same tabs open if you have one tab too few clearly has dressed think, oh, there’s, a photo that went out last week, a few days ago of address and people were up in arms, whether it was black and blue dress where a white and gold dress or something like that, people were arguing about it and then meeting about the colors of the dress. Yes, because there’s and then scientists actually started arguing about why we were seeing different colors in this dress. What is this relevant to anything having to do with anything in the world? That’s important, it’s it’s, not it’s, not no it’s, very frivolous, and we’re at kind of an ugly stage of frivolity and social media right now, and that trust is sort of being held up the totem for that ugly frivolity. Welcome to tony martignetti non-profit radio coverage of the non-profit technology conference two thousand fifteen it’s hosted by antenna non-profit technology network. We’re in austin, texas, at the convention center. My guest is katie caress she’s, director of online communications for humane society legislative fund. Katie welcome. Thank you so much for having me. That’s a pleasure. Thanks. For taking time on a busy conference, your workshop topic is content strategy one oh one, what are non-profits not doing so well? I could do better at around their content strategy. Well, i bet everybody here has the intention to do much better. I think that everyone here probably is looking for something like content, strategy and it’s, just a matter of kind of getting their leaders, the executives onboarding really what it does is it applies, like intention and focus to all of your messaging. It’s, the basic plan, or the idea that your messages need a plan, a plan, focuses plan strategy, yeah, that sounds like it starts with goals. Yeah, it starts with goals. It’s just a good idea to start with making sure that you understand oh, yeah, making sure that you understand what your business goals are and discovering how your channel usually is websites with content strategy, but it could be anything social email, whatever making sure that those platforms have goals that are tighter business schools. So you’re avoiding this kind of like sprawl and all over nests of what happens with web sites a lot of time and the ad hoc put this up, teo well, great now, right? I’m taking it back to come from a ceo or a boardmember on dh or someone else senior, and it becomes hard to say no, exactly exactly, and i think that a lot of people who were working on websites or other channels just kind of feel like they’re in this quagmire, right there just likes just drowning and content, and they don’t have the tools to kind of push back or, you know, carve out a better way. So what this says it’s, like, we acknowledge that you’re in this like situation where you’re getting input from stakeholders who had all kinds of varying degrees of a definition of what the website is for what this content is supposed to do so content strategy says everybody from their own perspective, everybody’s no perspective, their own priorities, different audiences and you end up with this website that kind of like pleases nobody, right? It doesn’t drive your business goals, so content strategy says let’s, ask the question of why, before we do anything and i think that’s kind of revolutionary who worked on the web even the past, like ten years. It’s it’s just this race to the bottom, like what you said, like publish all the things now, and this has kind of slow down let’s have a plan and it ends up like driving engagement that it improves your brand it, you know, drives up, conversions, everything if you can kind of get the buy-in take a beat and pursue this, ok, where should we start our conversation? That was great over that was excellent. Overviewing thank you. Should we get started? Well, you should get started by, you know, finding some similarly minded colleagues, right? So talk to your team members about this current problem. Probably everybody started talking about it. I’m sure they are. Right, so talk to them about this. Just, you know, new notion that people are pursuing get the, you know, good kind of the buy-in from your colleagues and then start reaching out to people who are, you know, a little above you who could be an ambassador for you to senior leadership and work on getting that buy-in from those folks and then you just start by where you’re basically telling them or trying to get them on board with. We need to be more strategic about this. Yeah. Here. Our problems. Yes. And here’s, what are potential outcomes are yeah, if we can be a lot more sophisticated about, like here’s. Why we’re drowning, right? He’s, our driving here’s where our pages aren’t really converting people here’s why there now, not performing to where we want them go and you can even, like, start with your business goal. And then you pursue an audit. We got a big hump, okay, just went away. Okay. Great. What that was that was the speakers, the thie non-profit radio sound system. A cz exemplary it’s beyond question. So that came from the austin convention center. I wish i could run. I could run. This convention out of the way we run non-profit really agree? I don’t know these losers here. Yeah, but so one of the great first step to take us to get an audit done right? And so it’s an inventory of all of your content, but then it’s the audit phase, which you’re you know, you’re evaluating page by page, and for some people, this could be like tens of thousands of pages on their website right lorts a couple hundred, you’re evaluating page by page and determining whether that content piece of content actually lines with what everybody says your business goals are it’s a pretty serious audit? Now you gotta look at every page, every page, and obviously, if you have hundreds of thousands of pages, or if you’re, you know, a merchant’s site you’re going, you’re going to do like a sample size of those pages, right? You’re the idea is to just see, really, hell, well, you’re you’re content is performing and a lot of times that drives a conversation that drives, you know, that gives you the ammunition to make the case that we need to make a change, so an audit is key. It’s the first place to start and then you’re pursuing just getting that content landscape kind of sketched out determining what you’re ecosystem is right. So let’s say, you’ve got like, you know, thirty things the organization works on for non-profit you’re gonna have all kinds of things somebody’s working on. So you get the executives and the subject experts to agree? Like what? Our priorities right where the organization’s priorities get really clear on that, and then look at how those priorities and those areas they’re kind of developed on your site. Do you have one thing that’s like this really, really weird offshoot thing? Just like favorite thing, and you have, like, forty thousand pages on it. This should all be driven by the mission. Yeah, exactly. I already should be pretty clear. Yeah. Moflow very yeah, smooth from your your mission statement. Yeah, but what you’ll find, but i think a lot of non-profit especially large ones like, oh, my gosh, there’s there’s competing goals were competing priorities, and competing interpretations of with that mission is all across organization, which leaves just, you know, a lot of strife and a lot of tension for folks who were like right in the middle of that content production system, like the web editors. So, yeah, the idea is to kind of, like, sketch out what your content ecosystem should be. So if our priority right here is, like farm animal welfare, we we should have, like, the depth of that contact your sights to reflect that, and it should also reflect what the current priorities are and the tone that you should using, etcetera. But if you have something that’s just, like, really, really low priority, it doesn’t make sense for that to have, you know, take up twenty percent of the site and you’ll find that that happens a lot of times, so okay, okay, so we were going to get some early stakeholders summerlee allies engaged with us, yeah, hyre who then starts to develop the content strategy? So, you know, you may have someone who is a content strategist on your team, like, if so lucky you a lot of places, all right, let’s assume not our audience is small and midsize. Non-profit yeah, exactly, i know, and i’m from a huge non-profit and we don’t have anything like that, so usually this falls on the shoulders. Of you know that editorial director of a website or, you know, a director of any filler online platforms and usually going to fall on them, and it doesn’t have to be like we’re going to do all of this right now. It can be baby steps. They can be like let’s just take on one like many project and apply content strategy to it, like run that through that screen, kind of demonstrate successive that way, teo to your stakeholders and say, look how well this worked. Look how we drove results this way by applying attention and focus to this, and then you could move on to a larger things, but it always usually kind of just germinates from the web team, maybe someone else, depending on how the organisation structure and maybe someone like development or design. Everybody has a part in this, but yeah. Then it just gets not only getting the work done and turning your website our platform into what you wanted to be. Okay, that all sounds very simple, but there’s gotta be more to it on. We got plenty of time to spend together. So where? Where do we go now? Well i mean, yeah, gosh, so it starts with the audit, you know, and you’re looking into how your, how you’re this map to your goals and everything, and then you might start with, like, a section of the website, maybe a section that you feel like the stakeholders there are going to be easy to work with, and they’re going to, like, excited about the process, and so you might start with that that that section that makes a lot of sense but very good to make it explicit, you got some of those early allies. Zoho leaving some of their content is the place to start, you know, and don’t start with someone who are a section of your organization who, you know, it’s been kind of contentious to work with them, and a lot of people talk about how content started she’s about, like therapy, right? It’s like all these relationships, because content is so personal, there’s so many people who were owning content across the organization and to them that that page that they wrote on legs, horse, immuno contraception is like their baby, right? Like, okay, well, this makes no sense to an audience this makes no sense to a user, how are they going to do that? So a lot of this kind of, you know, your revision work or whatever is collaborative, and you’re getting people on those teams who contribute to content and you’re all coming to a consensus on, like, what it should be based on, like what? We’ve all agreed on the goals, and we’ve all agreed on the audience, like, how can we change? And sometimes you get them involved in writing new stuff? It all depends on kind of the scope of the organization and how involved everybody wants to be, but it should be a collaborative process, and it could be merely taking, like, five pages that you took out from the audit and saying, like, okay, well, these pages are they really working for us? And so you get them involved in that early early stages so they can kind of see it don’t feel like they’re being put upon, right? A lot of this is relationship management, and so, yeah, you may take five pages and two of them make the cut on the new site, but you’ve all worked on that together. Three then you decide to retire or, you know, you can, you know, contingency plan it, right? Like have a couple of bourbons on it, and he composed it. But the whole thing should be collaborates. You have everybody going on the same page from beginning tend so we should be thinking also about our audiences. That’s, right, who’s who’s consuming this content, right? And so that’s. One of the first things you develop as your, you know, working on your goal, you’re also thinking about your audience. And so anybody who’s working in a content strategy, capacity and organizations should be talking a lot, teo, all the stakeholders throughout the organization who are touching that content, right? So my job would be to go to that course. Amina, contraception page owner i mean, like, why is this important to you? Tell me, i use this in your work, but do you really, really want to see this? And what do you want them to do with it on? Don’t get a lot of really, really good information out of that. It sometimes turns out to be less contentious than you may have thought it wass right? You’ll discover that like, oh, actually they’re you know, they’re worked, requires something different, and now i can pitch something different to them that’s more useful than like this page on the website that i’ve seen has gotten like twenty, views and past year and so it’s, just a lot of lot of talking relationship management, and then once you’ve got kind of, i guess that section worked on or even the whole site, then you just move on to a governance situation and actually see bret coming right here. Maybe he wants to speak on governance. Governance is actually brett’s section right? Red, you better hurry up, man. Come on. Get in here. Great, but you did show up at the exact right time is very good timing if you’re going to be late was perfect great governance, governance around our our content strategy. What what does? What does that even mean? The governance of it governance is the plan for the plan. There are a lot of non-profits these days who are under the impression that they need to create as much content as possible, which is kind of the opposite of having his strategy. So governance ltu plan who is responsible for what? So you’re going to have probably a team of writers. Is that team of writers going to be able to publish content directly to the website themselves, or is it going to go through a review process? The whole thing around governance is making sure that people understand what their roles are and setting up the map for how content. Is going to move from creation through publication to the public. Okay? And as we are, these are these are written this’s, a written plan, this government’s plan. Ideally, it is going to be written down. Usually, it is more of a word of mouth thing, and people just have a general idea of what their roles are. Way got some time left together. What what? What what element do you like to see in in the government governance plan? Let’s? Take the idea where it is, it is written? Yes, we try to make sure that things aren’t just happening in the communications department because everybody’s going to have some sort of content that they want to get on the web site that day, we talked about getting the early buy-in great. So yeah, it’s it’s kind of along the lines of a cross functional team, you have to identify who the best writers are the people who are going to create content that’s going to have meaning for the users who were coming to the website and just generally making sure that they understand what their roles are, who is going to be creating the content who’s going to be editing the content? If you have that kind of evergreen content, they stuff that is going to be kind of a permanent fixture of the website. How often are you going to go back and take a look at that content again to make sure that it is meeting? The needs of the organization isn’t performing as well as it should be. So part of the governance is it also understanding what the metrics for success are and the metro for success are going to be a lot different for the about the organisation information than it would be for, say, the blawg or if they’re doing events? An event is a very time box thing it’s going to have a ramp up? They’re going to be pushing a lot of content or information around the event, but as soon as the event is past that usually doesn’t have a lot of utility as opposed to maybe some of the about us content you want to get across what the goals of the organization is, what the organization does. You want people to really understand what this non-profit is trying to accomplish its very important content, so they need to keep coming back and making sure that it’s working, writing down the goals means that they have something to measure against, and they’re not just creating content in the dark. Katie, i see you doing a lot of nodding, but there’s things you like to add, i mean, the only thing i would add to that i’m sure brett nose like you would think, really addresses the idea that content is like a living, breathing thing, right? The website this is living, breathing thing it’s very different than an email that you sent out to your list. You know, it has to be up there all the time. And so what? Brett’s talking about it’s so critical, teo to know that it’s not enough just when you hit publish, you know, it’s not like a print magazine. It’s not like an email, he just sent out not even, like log, you know, so that’s just the beginning when you hit publish and so this governance is so, so critical to making sure content is still performing, you know, a year from now or that you that you remember that it’s up, it makes a lot of times you have a huge website, people were like, oh, that that page, yeah, it happens to people who are, like, really deeply invested as well. Just i have a huge websites going to it’s going to take over if you don’t govern it let’s spend a good amount of time talking about the measurement and the success metrics go ahead, that’s your that’s, your area? Excellent. Yes, we’ve been doing a lot of data with our cloudgood data work with our clients recently, so we know for a fact that the home page is not the common way that people come into a website anymore. They’re using google, they’re coming in deep in into the site, through social media or through what’s called dark social, the people chatting each other, links on stuff that can’t really be tracked. No, you have to understand that any page of your website might be creating that first impression for folks, but the goals of the various types of content that you might have on your website are going to be different. So when we do work with clients, we try to help them understand that an event page, a page that somebody might google for. Oh, amplify austin, for example. What? We don’t know exactly what page they’re going to come into at first, but as the data starts to come in, you can see where they’re entering the site and you can help. You can come up with the metrics that are going to let you know whether or not that paige is successful, so if you’re coming into an event page with the registration, you want them to get the information about the event very quickly and decide whether or not they want to attend, and the next step from that would be clicking on the register button, which would be very different from a post on the block where you want them to consume the content and then probably share it. So the metrics there going to be slightly different. The important part is to recognize all the types of content and set up the different metrics that will indicate success for that particular organization, because it’s always going to be different, okay? And katie, we were using the interesting example of the equine immuno contraception paige thank, which could be a coin acquaint, contra or something. Yeah, i mean that that was so it was so benefit from governance. I would just so benefit from having those questions asked. Like, what does it mean for this page to succeed? What do you want your users to do with it? And then really, really, like, trail down and see if that’s happening. And i think that that could take care of so much like problem content on so many people’s websites, if you’re just sticking to you, like, really direct, objective measurement and then there’s kind of you take away all the, like, the sensitivity with that, like, okay, here’s this thing that i didn’t say like, you know, google said it, whatever, we still have several minutes left together, what what have we not talked about? Whatever i ask you that that you want to share? I like to, and i know that katie agrees with this because we’ve talked about it a little bit make sure that krauz understand the content strategy doesn’t have to be just about the website, and it shouldn’t just be in the communications department e channel it is multi channel and the development, the people in the development department who are sending out fund-raising letters that is a piece of content that is going to create an impression and if any one of these things is a little bit off message, i mean, we don’t want to get too far into the whole whole branding part. But if anything’s too far off message or strikes a wrong note with the supporters, you’re probably going to lose thumb, at least in the short term. I’m so glad you brought that up exactly whenever i’ve talked about content started, you know, a lot of people think like, oh that’s just for websites and even this idea that content is only on a website and just like no like a tweet is content any you know, period it’s, certain pages, that’s, all content that’s why i get so excited about this top because i really feel like it has, you know, with the ability to bring everything together and it can get kind of as big as you want it to be. But that’s what that’s? Why it’s so cool? And i the best organizations i’ve seen are the ones who are integrating every single channel into their content strategy and all just completely flows the same ethics, the same style, the same tone, the same priorities and goals and audiences were just really, really woven and deeply, inappropriately and it’s just like it’s cake. I love it! Brett katina, a zay mentioned, talked about getting some allies early on and then may be developing a mini project. Around some of their content. Do you have any other ideas you want to add about trying to get this? This team buy-in whether it’s in the early stage or or in the later stages, maybe some, maybe some departments are not as willing as others. What advice do you have there? Katie is absolutely right getting that early win always going to be important because then you’d demonstrate the success or what you can possibly achieve by having a written content strategy other than that getting that leadership buy-in early is it’s, not just from the team that you’re assembling, that that’s going to be creating the content. Leadership really has to support this and understand the value they already understand the value, because we’ve been talking about branding at the non-profit technology conference for a long time, there’s a lot of companies who’ve been helping non-profits developed this brand, but the content that is supporting the brand has to be taken into account too. So it’s not a big step for leadership to take, from supporting the brand to supporting the content that is supporting the brand. Yeah, like there’s, so much overlap with just brand and content. Strategy is the time o que onda geun this all all flows from our mission statement, so that seems like the place to start. Katie and i did talk about that anything you want to add about that non-profits have a built in advantage.
