Last week i was at fund-raising day got about ten interviews for the show, one of which we’re goingto listen to very shortly today, but great fun meeting everybody on the exhibit floor got some sponsorship enquiries good to see everybody there about fifteen hundred people at the conference and good busy booth we had on the exhibit floor this week it is motivate your board for major e-giving and revisiting your twenty twelve prospect plan from last week’s fund-raising day conference. This is the first of my interviews from the fund-raising day conference hosted by association friendraising professionals new york city chapter just last friday. So this is the first of the ten that i got years. Motivate your board for major e-giving with jennifer herring, welcome to tony martignetti non-profit radio coverage of fund-raising day two thousand twelve, we’re in the heart of new york city in times square at the marriott marquis. My guest right now is jennifer herring. Jennifer is president and ceo of the maritime aquarium at norwalk, and her topic is major gifts two point oh, straight talk for your board, jennifer. Welcome to the show. Thank you very much, tony. I’m glad to have you on dh. Thank you for taking time in a busy conference day. A pleasure. Why don’t you acquaint listeners with the work of the maritime? Aquarius. Ah, the maritime aquarium is a regional aquarium located in fairfield county, connecticut, that serves primarily connecticut in westchester. But the whole tri state region it’s focused on long island sound. In fact, it’s, the only aquarium focused on long island sound our mission is to inspire people of all ages to appreciate long island sound and protect it for future generations. We have a wonderful collection of long island sound animals and a lot of ability to touch and directly experience animals. It’s a very intimate aquarium. Okay, we also have a very large education program that reaches out primarily to underserved students around the tri state area. And how long have you been there? I’ve been there for going on eight years now as the ceo. Okay, let’s, get into your seminar topic. Major gifts two point oh, straight talk for your board. You’re encouraging gift officers to be change agents around board fund-raising way. We’ll have plenty of time for detail, but generally what’s what’s the problem that you see, i think that the challenge with boards is to keep them engaged. Getting them on the board is on ly step one all fund-raising especially major gifts. Fund-raising is about personal relationships. And just like any friendship, personal relationship needs to be cultivated and maintained on a continuous basis so you can get getting people on the board is the first challenge and talk a little bit. We want we want talk? A little about recruitment will get sacked, right? But once they’re on the board keeping them engaged, challenging them with meaningful ways to be connected with your organization, it’s an ongoing challenge and the strategy behind that is something that the development officers can and should play a significant role in. Okay, let’s, let’s talk a little about the recruitment of board members. How do we make plane? What the fund-raising expectations are at the recruitment stage? I’ve done that for many, many years, no there’s always a conversation, you know, once you’ve i met, the person cultivated the person enough so that your at a position to have a conversation about whether they want to join your board. And of course, that person has to be somebody who’s passionate about your mission and somebody who is going to bring something either some expertise or capacity or preferably or a network of contacts are preferably all three two the nexus of issues that the organization feeling you have ensured that the person you’re recruiting is bringing something, what one one to a little three of those? Absolutely because, of course, the ideal boardmember brings wealth, wisdom and work. And we want to engage all three. So you’re having the conversation and it’s almost always conversation, at least in my current job between me, sometimes with another trustee and the perspective person and i just lay the expectations out on the table. Now we have kind of a sliding scale of expectations, depending on the capacity of the person the board has voted. This is a small organization, it’s, about a ten and a half million dollar budget and how many trustees are there there at the moment? Thirty one that’s large could be that’s a lot that’s. A lot of trustees, partly because in a cultural institution, being on the board or on a committee of the board is the only way you have a connection there. No grateful patients. There are no alumni. You have to create a connection and keep it going. Okay, and the board is a very important way to do that. So getting back to the recruitment conversation, i always put a specific number on the table. Um, and it can be as little as the minimum annual gift that the board has voted. Should be the minimum, which is twenty, five hundred. Dollars uh huh. Often i will say site a larger annual gift if i know the person has more capacity plus either giving ah, e-giving or selling a table to the gala. And then we’ve been in a campaign mullet for the last five years. I usually say, you know, once you’ve gotten involved in and been a member and really gotten connected, we will be coming to talk to you about a major giff ok? And the first number that’s an annual number that’s an annual number. Okay, so you’re very clear about the expectations, do you? Do you do this in writing and let the person take it home to take it to the office and considerate or this is really all verbal well, what we give them in writing, we don’t give them the expectation and writing, okay, we give them the role of the board. You know what? What our expectations of them are in terms of their responsibilities and what they can expect of us in terms of response. Civilities, we give them a lot of background material about the organization would let them see who they’re colleagues on the board would baby give them. Aboard list, but we don’t have, you know, a pledge form that they have to sign beforehand. We figured that the verbal conversation is enough, and then we solicit them ah, at the at year end or calendar, you’re a fiscal year, and we have a june thirtieth fiscal year for what we’ve talked about. All right, now you have a new boardmember they’ve they’ve accepted based on the expectations, what is ah, board training look like for brand new board members around? Fund-raising well, we don’t have a really formal training for us it’s on the job, maybe they go on other calls, outgoing calls with others or what we mostly do. We have a pretty elaborate committee structure, one of which is this is a campaign committee, but a marketing committee of finance committee, education committee and exhibits committee, so we use those committees to get them connected with the meat and the program of the organization we use the gala committee very actively to engage people in soliciting tables for the gala. That’s in some ways, the easiest kind of fund-raising to do because it’s very transactional, then there’s a a certain small kadre of leadership volunteers. Who have made major gif ts and who are in powerful positions in the board that i work with personally to develop specific ask strategies that they participate in to go on called fund-raising calls with terrorism that’s sort of on the job it’s on me. Okay, so it’s on the job training because i’ve i’ve found i’ve worked it now for non-profits and i in none of them has there ever been, you know, you get the whole board together and you have a little fund-raising training thing. We tried to do that, actually on a retreat in two thousand eight, the week that the stock market was falling apart when we were about to launch our campaign and had a little role playing about how you ask, but that contrived, right? So everybody knew everybody knew was staged its quite trust, and i found that it’s much better to work directly with the person who’s agreed to go on a call with you, and what i do is write a script for that person, and i do it for myself too about you know what the objective is, how much we’re going to ask for what the background. Is the, you know, the background, research, the relationship with the person to the organization, and then what each of us is going to say, e-giving lending, e-giving e-giving, ding, ding, ding, ding! Big non-profit ideas for the other ninety five percent. Yeah, so you actually rehearse since you have a school to do, you practise the meeting in advance? Well, i practice myself. I mean, i sit in my office and speak the script, and i often will have a telephone call with the person who’s going with nato to go over it, and they used these scripts. They work really well to shape the the conversation and, you know, it’s sort of various whose mouth, the actual ask is going to come out of it most often comes out of my mouth even if we’re going with a peer, but it doesn’t matter, really, because the presence of the pier there makes all the difference. And why don’t you say a word about that? For people who may not recognise what what’s the value of having is someone someone alongside with you, who’s a a peer of the of the person you’re soliciting. So having somebody who’s involved who’s already made a major her gift who’s giving their time and and treasure to the organization validates the organization for the person that you’re asking the money for and sets a bar down four for what they’re doing, especially if it’s a trustee because the trustees are supposed to be the ones who care the most were the most invested and therefore need to be the biggest investors in the organization. That somebody on the outside of the organization is always looking. Two how much trustees were doing and how much in particular that trustee who’s asking has done to help scale their level of gift thinking. So so here’s an example. Actually, this isn’t a trustee is somebody whose son is a trustee. And who i’ve tried to get a trust to be a trustee for years has taken on the project of raising money for a new research vessel, which is a two and a half million dollar project. He’s in the shipping industry. He’s. Very passionate about it. He cochairs the committee he brought in the person who’s. Um, project managing the project. Who’s built many boats. He helped move us to the decision away from retrofitting an old boat to building a new boat from scratch. He agreed to raise the money. He gave a half million dollars lead gift. And i took him to see ah, prospect that’s been in our family at about the ten. Thousand dollar level for a number of years. Who we honored it, our gala, who we’ve cultivated pretty thoroughly and whose connection to the aquarium was around our existing research vessel. So we went and sat with him right before christmas in their kitchen. Sam uh, the gentleman who’s leading this project talked about it very passionately talked about what he’s done, and that is instance, the actual ask came out of my mouth. We left them with materials. But then the leader that the head of this effort played golf with the prospect in florida continue to cultivate him on his own separately from anything that the institution was doing. And this gentleman stepped up with a half million dollar gift, matching the lead gift for matching the lead gift. So it was a long cultivation effort, probably going on for five years before we got to the critical moment where we found the right project that connected to this person’s passion. And i’m sure that the fact that he was being solicited by somebody else who had made a gift at that level was one of the things that determined no, his i mean, this is somebody with a lot of capacity. Who’s named things all over town. This also speaks to the value of the long term relationships that you mentioned now that may not have been a long term relationship, but it was the beginning of it was the beginning of a relationship between those between those two between those two. Absolutely and and there is the long term relationship with the institution. Find this gentleman the person who made the five hundred thousand dollar gift had been involved with the institution for at least five years. But between these two people, right, a developing relationship, correct? See each other’s piers on dh makes it tougher for the person solicited to refuse. The other thing usually is that when you’re going to have a solicitation call, the person that you’re soliciting knows why you’re coming to see that it’s not a surprise way don’t want toby blindsiding people you want them to know, right? I mean, you basically set up the meeting in a way that says, i want to come and talk to about this project for this campaign or so that they know what it is and if they don’t want to be solicited. They won’t take the meeting mostly right? Let’s talk about the role of the professional fundraiser in supporting lord fund-raising what do you see as the the role? Well acquaint people with the structure at the aquarium? Do you have? Ah, vice president, director development? Yes, there are some gift officers or we have it, but we have a very small development, as we have in highly experienced director development who’s been doing university development, heading university development departments for thirty years. We have a person who does foundations and ah latto the patron program and various other many aspects of fund-raising is sort of the director of the annual fund, but he’s also doing major gift so it’s not very good at everything that it is typical of a small shop. We have a person who does the gallas and corporate fund-raising we have a person who does membership and the acknowledgment of gif ts and some fulfillment of patron level gift, which is a thousand dollars for us, we don’t have very many patrons and and that person has an assistant so it’s basically five, five people in there, other things that are being done out of this. Opponent who eyes the liaison to the board for fund-raising assume it’s, the it’s, the director of development and to some degree that the person who manages the gala because the board is so involved in the gala so and and also the personal i would say that there are three of our gift officers that that have relationships, not with every boardmember but with some board members, and then since you’re giving your your topic is major gift, right, what’s, the what’s, the support that the director development probably is the one providing to the to the board around around major, gifted director, director of development it’s mostly providing support to me around major gift activities and that’s possibly because i have such a strong fund-raising background was the ceo. I mean, that’s what i’ve been my career has been for thirty years, so we talk about strategy. He identifies prospects, does the research. He does a lot of personal cultivation with these people, too. So he makes friends with them. He talks about his travels there, travels. He fixed us up with theater tickets. He does things that just brings them closer to the organization. He’s very active. In working with the board on small, intimate cultivation dinners, that’s something you ask board members to do? We asked members events and not in the way host them right in front of our biggest exhibit, which is a shark tank. So you’re you’re having dinner with the sharks swimming around in this elegant table. There’s, you know, a maximum of twenty of you there’s, some interesting intellectual guest, either professor from yale or the principle of our partner school that’s closing the achievement gap or somebody like that, you’re there with a bunch of peers that the board members bring to the table and that’s part of the cultivation effort that’s proven very successful and really important in moving people into major gift relationships with us. What do we do with or four board members who have a reluctance to do fund-raising now, even at the so even going back to the er, teo bringing them on, bring them on the board, the recruitment if they express our reluctance, they have skills that you need and they’re willing to do their own giving maybe a maybe a much higher level than the twenty five dollar minimum, but they have a reluctance to do to be asking people for money, what can they be doing around fund-raising we just don’t bother with them because we don’t have time, frankly, so you wouldn’t accept that kind of a boardmember no, no, we just leave them alone to what they’re doing, okay? And don’t try to make them do something they can’t d’oh. But even if they can’t ask there not comfortable asking, they could, for instance, host the hosting events so that’s were constantly, uh, trying to get people to bring their friends to our events to our friends of his are exhibit openings introduced people to us, and every year when we have aboard retreat, they all the people there pledged that they will do that and every year on ly a few of them do it word definitely working very hard to get boardmember sze to agree to host or co host thies, small dinners are shark tank dinners and bring with its great they’re called struck thank dinner. Yes. Oh, isn’t that great? I just read something online that if there was one drop of blood in one million drops of blood or something like that, sort of sense that consensus was that on npr’s website or something it could be but that’s something that that one of our education programs that demonstrates two kids very interesting how they do it with a little drop of tomato juice, being deluded and deluded and deluded, and and they figure out when they can taste it and okay, yeah, so your shark tank dinners so we’re constantly trying to get boardmember is to bring their peers to shark tank dinners, which is very difficult to do, and only a few of them are really able tto leverage those kinds of relationships. It’s, you know, we have in some ways a naive for this is not new york city, and this is not new york city fund-raising with the kind of power boards that i’ve worked with at the new york public library and the wildlife conservation society it’s a very different kind of bored, maybe many of these people are being our board members for the first time, some of them are, you know, business people may be in the upper middle management of the bank, and there they don’t have that kind of reach into rich people community that um, that is common in new york. On the other hand, fairfield county has a huge amount of hedge fund wealth and a huge amount of maritime wealth, although in this economy, that’s less than it, wass. And we’re getting more and more of those kinds of people on our board who do have a network and are able to to bring us at least to get this us in a room with them. Okay, then the challenge becomes how two convince the sector. That is more and more about venture philanthropy that has measurable impact. That there’s something for them at the maritime aquarium? Yeah, on dh. Well, we want to stick to the board fund-raising topic, but i know that impact and outcome assessment is very here for lots of charities. And yes, it is a struggle for cultural institutions to do that. Although it sounds like maybe around your education in this job we do. We are able to do that around our education on shifts and initiatives in some very interesting ways about closing the achievement gap, and one of our trustees made a very strategic a gift to us that allowed us to do a case study about a partner school that we’re working with and what impact our partnership has had in their achievement there. Rising achievement of school that’s almost all inner city kids. Jennifer way have just about a minute left. And i want to talk a little about the case for support on dh analyzing that case for support again in just a minute. So what’s your advice around scrutinising that you need a strong case for support. You need your board to be able to deliver it in an elevator speech s so that they can be great ambassadors for you. The case for support is what’s going to make people give? They have to understand that you have to teach them through your case for support that you are an institution that can help them change the world, that they can change the world through your institution, and get the joy and satisfaction of doing that through their philanthropy. The the elevator speech for board members, do you help them write it? First? Talk about what we have definitely done that, and we’ve done it in various ways. The elevator speech should have a certain set of statistics, and i’ve actually gone so far as to take a business card and write him out that they can keep in their pocket this citizen. But the elevator speech also has to connect to the passions of the boardmember so that they can talk about the institution in a way that that communicates the passion that they bring to it. So every boardmember doesn’t have the same elevators, no every boardmember doesn’t and shouldn’t have the same elevator speech. Excellent advice. Ok, it goes to what? What? What moves them the most. Time for tony’s, take two on tony martignetti non-profit radio my block this week is nearly one thousand new york city charities lose tax exemption the new york city department of finance ah revoked the property tax exemption from nine hundred twenty five city based charities because they failed to demonstrate a legitimate charitable purpose. They lost their property exemption for what? For property that they owned. And, as i say in the blogged, something similar to that was reported in the new york times last year and and the block post has a link to that coverage, i think the lessons for charities are you need to stay true to the charitable mission that got you. The irs is designation of tax exempt however, many years ago that was and in the case of one of the charity’s sighted, but you’ll see in the blogged from new york city, that was nineteen, thirty four and but now, obviously, new york city is challenging that. So you need to stay true to that charitable mission that got you that original tax exempt designation and i think, also need to stay in compliance with state and local regulations. And laws because i could see compliance being linked to keeping your tax advantage at the state and local level. And that’s all we’re talking about. We’re not talking about federal tax exemption. These were ah, this is all state and local tax advantages also want to remind you well, that’s on the block and my blog’s is that tony martignetti dot com and that’s, this week’s post. How is that possible, maria? Simple. I know your air right in here. Hello, maria. Simple. How are you? I’m doing well. Find your best donor prospects now and most importantly, she’s, our regular prospect research contributor, and this month we’re revisiting the twenty twelve prospect plan maria from the january sixth show. You had some ideas back then, i did absolutely so i came up with kind of a list of things that people could do, and i thought i’d be a good idea to revisit it now that we are hard to believe midpoint in the year of twenty twelve already, i know, um, so not to revisit the entire show, but some of the tips that we had, we brought to the table at that point we were talking about, you know, prospecting from within your database in-kind of mining that database and tips for how you can keep up with some of your top prospects. But we also talked about proactively identifying people outside the database and bringing them into your organization to learn more about your missions and by hosting by hosting some cultivation events, right? Right. So we did, you know, talk about cultivation events. My suggestion had been to in the first three months of the year, really trying to identify people from within the database and proactively identified people outside your database that you might invite some cultivation events and then try and hold those events in second quarter. So let let’s assume that people may have taken our advice hosted one or two cultivation events, but if not, we have some lessons or we have some ideas to get started. The year’s not over and it’s only half. So you can still, you know, implement all of these and just think about shifting the tips into the second half of the year. That’s even we have even more than half. This is only the twenty fourth. So twenty four, twenty four, fifty seconds have passed. So what is that? Twelve. Twenty six and then it goes down even further. Teo six, six, eighth goes from all right. Well, you have more than half the year left. Yeah, just a little over half the year. So all is not lost. But anyway, let’s, let’s talk about some of those. Those tips that we talked about, we mentioned identifying maybe the within your database. Who were those top ten to twenty gifts that you’d received in the past year. And also your top ten prospects in terms of lifetime giving to your organization and, you know, inviting those people to attend a cultivation event. Now, you know, sometimes people refer to these parlor event. You know, whatever terminology want to use, the event can be held at your facility. If you have a facility you want to showcase or outside in somebody’s home. So in particular, if you have somebody you’re affiliated with with your board or another volunteer who’s willing to open up their home, particularly if they have a lovely home. And really, the setting would work very nicely for us. A small, intimate gathering. The key to remember here, there’s no. Ask at that. You know, that could also be on site. You might have. You might have a very interesting place for people to gather on site i in the interview that everybody heard earlier in the show. Jennifer herring is president of the maritime aquarium at norwalk in connecticut. And they like to host things in front of the shark tank. Right? So it could be a small gathering. If you have a small shark or maybe have a gecko or, you know a hamster, you could host a small group in front of a little aquarium. With, you know, eight or twelve people watching the hamster go around in a wheel, i mean, that could be compelling. Yeah, certainly if you have a facility that lend itself well to that type of gathering that’s great. I attended something recently at the liberty science center here in jersey city in new jersey, and it was a fabulous event, and so, you know, just get creative and think about what would draw people in. Is it the space? Is that this person’s home on dh? The key is to really be able teo stick to the time frame that you tell people it will be, particularly if you’re going to do it around some sort of a breakfast event, people need to get on with their day, be a little bit more lax if it’s an end of the day event, but from a prospecting or prospect research point of view you want to think about while you’re attending that event, listening for, you know, some of the general interests now, you know, i’m assuming that a lot of the people that are listening to this show may be from a smaller to midsize non-profit so the person taking on the role of prospect researcher is either the executive director is the development director, maybe a communications director. Whoever that person is that also does some prospect research at the organization should be in attendance at this event with the so purpose, really, to do a little bit of intelligence gathering. Yeah, you want to be you want to be making sure that people are that staff, if you do have multiple staff, you don’t want them huddled together over in the sort of the room, even if it’s just two or three of you, you know, huddled in a corner, chatting or all seated at the same table if there are multiple tables, that’s, a that’s, a big mistake, you’re not you’re not going to be out talking to people as much as you could be, right? So this is an opportunity for you to showcase your non-profit but also to elicit a lot of wonderful information that, quite frankly, a lot of instances you may just not be able to find this information online. So so what type of information might that be that you’d want to elicit as wearing your prospect? Just general interest just engaged the person in conversation on and be a good listener that is just so very keys just to really put your listening ears on. And we’ve talked about we have talked about that in the past. Thie radical listening, which came from a previous guest. Melanie schnoll begun. And then you picked up on radical listening and recommended it as prospect research vehicle. Right? Total cultivation event is a great place for you to become a radical listener. So gent general interests that they have any family information that you khun gather sometimes there might be information about children, ages of children just to get kind of get an idea of where they are, what point in their lives that they’re at. Um, are they you know, more of a plan giving prospect for you? Are they really just starting out in their lives, their careers, and have very young children? Just you want to be genuinely interested in in their lives? S and and what? What it is about your work that appeals to them, right? And one way to find out about that is, well, obviously to directly ask them. But it’s also interesting to try and gather where else? They’re volunteering their time. You know what other charities air they particularly interested in so that you can try and figure out? Well, gee, just, you know, the programming and then services that we offer does it a line at all with what this family has in terms of their general charitable interest. So in the case of the maritime museum, they might be thinking about, you know, china, find out what you nowhere else these people are are spending their time. Are they interested in other maybe water conservation efforts, other charities that really address water quality in the long island sound? You know, things of that nature, and so for sure, you’ll know that you’re on the right track and engaging this person in additional conversation. So, you know, that might be a great way to find out where they and their spouse volunteered their time also vacationing. You know, this is a great opportunity for you to say so, you know, do you have any exciting vacation plans for this summer? Uh, so, you know, be listening for responses like, yeah, we’ll be spending, you know, the entire month of august in our home. In the hamptons, you know, they say that nature good to know just just generally find out what type if they say no, we’re doing this stay cation thing this year, you know, pick up on that cue, um, and then really, really important the circles back to something we talked about in the january show is to be able to really create some sort of contact reports on capturing critical information that you’ve been able to glean from the, uh, from the cultivation events. Right now, we have a great dahna database right now, back in january, we talked about we encouraged i think it was the eleven percent that didn’t have a computer database to look at the clouds packages that available, and you went into detail and on that in the january six show, so hopefully some of those people have converted teo computer databases, right? And if they’re still in there, sort of in the shopping phase, i’ll just remind them real quickly that the two websites that that might be something for them to check out that might give them some additional info on what’s available out there. Idealware dot or ge talked had a kn article about how to select a database and tech soup dot or ge is a good place to find some low cost and free tech advice. So, you know, check those out if you’re still in shopping mode. Andi, i you know, i truly believe that cloud based is the way to go it’s just going to give your staff and your board the most flexibility on dh then your point about saving that valuable information that you that you learn at a cultivation event in that computer database or if you’re not computerized yet, i guess you know, you you print up a contact report and put it in a person’s folder, right? Exactly and, you know, it’s really important, like, just just like you don’t want that staff to be all congregating together in the corner, it’s going to be very important after the event post event very quickly thereafter within a day or two to have a debriefing if it’s not a meeting, get a conference call going, you know, there’s free conference services out there there’s no reason why you can’t just say, you know, knowing in advance the date of the event, let’s say it’s a thursday evening by by friday midday, you could be having a conference call in have that scheduled way in advance that you’re going to have a debriefing call, you know what were the important point? Somebody found out from speaking with some of the people, and you may want to actually pre-tax fine people, right? So if we know in advance that mr big bucks is going to be there, why not do a little pre advanced research on him and find out a little bit of information? And so that a boardmember can be assigned to perhaps be the person to you know, just have a discussion and you can even try and figure out who the best four person would be, that you’d want to make sure cultivating that individual during the way we’re going to take a break. I want to emphasize before we do one thing that you said, which is in terms of inviting people, look a tte donors who have give been giving for the lifetime large donors over their lifetime, so individual gifts may not be so large, but they’re giving history over the life over their lifetime with your organization. Is quite large. Those air also good people to invite. We’re going take a break, and maria simple will still be with me after that break. And i hope you will, too. Hi there and welcome back we’re revisiting your twenty twelve prospect plan with maria simple maria just teo wrap up that topic on cultivation events. Was there anything more you wanted to say about that before we get to one of the other topics from from january? I would say in terms of pre imposed cultivation event, there are a couple of websites that you might want a bookmark to be able to do some of that general research on an individual that might be attending or might have attended anay event. I outlined some of these in the going beyond google article that i have on my website, and maybe what i ll do, tony is at after the show go ahead into your lincoln page as well as your lincoln group as well as your facebook group on dh post there about what where they confine that exactly, but it’s a suspect finder, dot com and it’s on the resource is paige, so some of those things that you can do is obviously run the person’s name through google. Now the big tip with google is that you want to put quotation marks around a person’s name, so that you’re finding their name as a phrase in google if is so, certainly you could do that. You can set up a google alerts again on the top ten donors we had recommended back in january that you look at the top donors that you have in your database and set up an alert on their name that’s free google will push the information to you so you could find out if something new is happening, especially in somebody’s business career. Now, last time we talked about alerts, i think you had set one on me or we talk about something and you used me as an example. I was lousy results was a wealth indicator. Was that that wealth indicator? What? What, you know, what’s interesting about setting up. Stop using me as an example, right? Google and google alerts is if you google plus now is actually influencing, and we talked about that on one of your shows it’s influencing your search results. So if you are on google plus and you are logged into google, the results are actually going to be skewed more toward social results. So if you’re doing this purely as a prospect researcher. You may want to actually log out of google. Um, your google plus account before commencing your prospect research. Just a tip. I think you might get a little bit more of objective results, if you will. It’s not gonna be so much skewed toward just social sector social media here. And you had you had examples on of other alerts that that people could set beyond the free google lorts, which are which are outstanding. I use them a lot for for my work, right? But you had some examples of others specific newspaper alerts. A lot of the newspapers out there permit used to set up alerts on specific phrases. If you and also the news sources in your state here i track in new jersey, i track and jay is, uh, they send me daily alert just generally what’s going on in the business community. I get those alerts twice a day here in new jersey. So that’s, something you want to consider looking into. What is that publication that covers your state? It might present from interesting opportunities for you because they tend to not only highlight, you know, negative news that’s going on, but also some real positive news and then one of the fee based services that some of your listeners maybe currently scribed, too, for doing foundation research is called foundation search dot com and as paid subscriber, one of the things that you have access to is a new foundation alert service. So if you are subscribed to that service, definitely set up the alert for yourself. They’ll let you know anytime a new foundation is formed on registered with the irs in your state or whatever states you decide to set up, as you know, the alert service and you will be pushed the information through email, then you can check it out a little bit further waken set these alerts up not only for individuals but companies and foundations. That’s, right? Yeah, you can definitely do that as well. Cos and foundations, you want to set up those alert so, you know, whatever it is that you’re looking to track for certain, you want to set up the alert there? Um, lincoln is a great place to research. Somebody pretty opposed an event. Also, they have free alerts that you can set up within lincoln. So let’s say you’re always, you know, prospecting for somebody who holds specific in a certain industry. Let’s say the accounting industry or something like that. Ah, and you want to always be notified anytime somebody new joins lincoln who’s in the accounting field and also happens to be within a certain radius of your zip code, you can set those types of alerts up up to three of them, actually under a free lengthen account to take advantage of that. And have lincoln pushed the information to you, maria, is that using the advanced search? Yeah, yeah. You can do with the advanced search page just to do the search initially and then? Ah, once you set those, you see the search results, you can actually save that search and you’re allowed to save up to three searches. Particularly useful. Okay. Okay, so the cultivation events, the alerts i’ve calculated now the year is six thirteen ths of the way through. So you have you have seven thirteenth remaining to take advantage of these ideas that maria originally recommended back in january. But don’t feel bad, maria. We have just about thirty seconds left. What do you want to leave people with in? This mid year checking this revisiting of the prospect plan i think it’s really just the idea of getting proactive on dh getting their delve into your database proactively trying mine it proactively look for people who are outside of the database that you need to bring in and learn about your organization and really help them stored them along said that they will feed knew names into your organization and be willing to host their own cultivation event. My guests now are travis fraser and michelle walsh. Travis is director of mate gif ts for united way of new york city and michelle walsh’s, director of leadership gif ts for the united states fund for unicef. Welcome, thank you, thanks pleasure to have you, they’re seminar topic is success stories got women donors, and so we’re all about talking about female donors. Michelle, why are female donors important? Why are the important they’re important? Yeah, i mean, if you look at research even to start, which is where we were talking earlier today, it’s, they’re making up a larger part of the e-giving population than ever before. So i was just referencing an article earlier where in two thousand five was the first year that the irs had records that women were actually out giving men as a whole. I think it was sametz twenty one billion as compared with about sixteen or seventeen billion so and that’s already, you know, six years old at this point, but they have huge giving power and very often that they make their decisions differently, and we need to be aware of that and that they also are motivated differently, so i think they’re important because they do give and when they do give, they tend to mobilize people, so not only did they give their own funds, but they’re also generating additional support very often and travis. Of course, in the upper ages, women survive men on average, yes, moflow closer tonight. So? So if we’re talking about deferred or planned gift, women become critical because typically they’re inheriting their husbands, their husbands, states or a portion of yeah, yes, that’s that’s true, we don’t deal a lot with plant giving within our women’s group, and i think as our core group of members ages and we start looking broadening, i guess t younger populations, we might start making plans with four plan giving with them, but because of how we’re able to engage them and draw them closer to the organization, they really i thing translate into perfect prospects for for major get for plant gifts in the future. So, michelle, you mentioned different donor motivations women versus men. What are some of the differences that you see? I think that women as a whole, obviously only one particular woman relies right, but that if you look at women as a whole, very often they’re motivated by things that they can connect with and be involved with, so they’re motivated by family, they’re motivated by making a difference. We’ve noticed that it’s not usually being on a donor list or being on a donor wall, they also want to be a part of a community that’s doing something that has results so there really is a motivation about doing. Good in the world and what? What? That accomplishment iss okay, and how do you find that different than than the male donor? I think that it’s not as driven in terms of the connection. So seeing something and seeing what it’s doing hasn’t been as much of a motivator for men in that same when you can have more of ah here’s here’s the information this is what it’s going to do? Of course they want to know what the results are but it’s not as much of a desire to be engaged in the process. Okay, yeah, michelle, your work does include working with older donors seventies and eighties women in those ages. I would say that it’s across the board. So we’re looking at ultra high net worth individuals and that’s really are deciding factor. There are certainly maura’s. You get up towards those hyre age groups of people that have accumulated that type of wealth. I think you spoke earlier with some of my colleagues who were talking about the younger generation twenty one to forty, right? And so we’re looking, really hoping towards getting most of the people to million dollar giver is a leadership. Gifts for us is one hundred thousand, but if we’re looking at that group, they are going to be, you know, tend towards the older end of it, but the representation of what portion of that is seventy to eighty, you know, i wouldn’t know off the top of my head, but there are certainly some people in there that would be in that age group, okay? And when you’re dealing with women of that age, i’m trying to focus. We’re talking about dahna motivations what’s your experience with when the husband was the primary donor on dh he’s, now deceased, you’re going to the you’re going to the surviving wife, what’s your experience around their willingness to teo continue to give, i think i mean it’s so individual if they’re very defined and what they’re giving is it’s, you know, very often on lee really about honoring someone’s memory, but if in order to engage them personally is the only way that i think that you’ll be able to get to that larger gift on dh to be able to do that, we’ve had it in a couple of instances, but getting back to even what the data is. Is that women are making more of the decisions while they’re alive. We know, with the married spouses well, i think travis actually was talking about what i was yeah, yeah, don’t you want to, travis? I mean, there there have been some recent studies out that are really showing that women are making about eighty percent of all of the sort of household financial decisions, whether that be philanthropic decisions, just what they buy, what goes into the household there there really the decision makers and i i feel like as fundraisers, we’ve really been led to believe that they are making it in tandem as a couple on dh in some cases that’s, true, but what we’re really finding through some new donorsearch audis that that is that the female is thie number one sort of decider in that position, okay, even when do we know if that applies? Even when the the husband is the person with the primary relationship to the organization, you know, i’m not sure that it goes that the research goes that deep. Um and i think that anytime you have any part of a couple that’s, the primary relationship, you sort of deal with that primary relationship, but also tried to to engage the other spouse in any way that you can with the work because you really want to see that couple as, ah, holistic entity, you know, it’s it’s, not just one person, yeah, excellent and applies all the more if, if the if the husband is the primary relationship, you certainly do want to bring the wife in because, on average, she’s going to be surviving her husband? Yeah, yeah, you know, and i have to say that being at united way were somewhat unique because a lot of our donors give through workplace campaign, so we’re really dealing with one half of the couple we’re really dealing with the female leadership donor xero followers, or mohr and electing to do that through payroll deduction. So it’s really her decision of what she’s doing with her paycheck? So it really involves her more and what she’s interested in and getting into. I sort of heard interest areas, so that has been very interesting for us, especially in trying to branch out and look towards more individual donors who aren’t sitting in the workplace and developing strategies to get to those people on dh and people that are part of a couple and engaging both of them in the work that we’re doing and we’ve definitely found that. So you know, a number of our male board members and with our particular woman in philanthropy initiative it’s been female board members who have led the charge, but a couple of male board members who have really founded a great opportunity and excuse to engage their wives without them. S so where they’re not just dragging them along to an event that they’re like that’s your cause, but that they’re able teo to feel and ask the questions that they want to ask. Without that, what do you call it? Oppcoll zoho do either of you or maybe both of you work around getting volunteer engagement from from females? Is that a part of your work? Or was it all just related to financial giving? Our entire program is volunteer related thie group that i manage is called women united in philanthropy on dh it is managed by a group of volunteers who come in volunteers steering committee that really charts the course of everything that that does so how do you start to get people engaged in that volunteer steering committee? Well, it really has been through the work of other steering committee members, we’ve been around for nine years, and this is a women’s this women’s group. Yes, it started from a conversation we were challenged by a female donor, two who asked us what we were doing to engage female donors, and we didn’t really have an answer for her. So we had a female boardmember who was very interested in getting to an answer. So she opened her home. We took a look at our lists of donors and sent out invitations to a number of our female donors to come together for a round table conversation and what came out of that conversation was very core group of dedicated women who really wanted to build something, and from that, we’ve been able to build a program that really engages women in the topic area that we’re raising money for, which is youth empowerment, and we are able to really talk about the issues that were that that we’re working towards. We give them opportunities to volunteer in the programs to see their dollars at work. Andi have educational forums that bring together some some thought leaders in the areas of education and health so that they really feel like they’re a part of the philanthropic process and that’s really what we tried to do to engage our female donors. Travis foster fraser sorry is a director of major gifts for united way of new york city and michelle walsh’s, director of leadership gif ts for united states fund for unicef and you’re listening to tony martignetti non-profit radio coverage of fund-raising day two thousand eleven earlier, i said next-gen charity because we were because michelle, when we’re talking about a twenty one to forties it’s next-gen so it got me saying next-gen which way also be at the nextgencharity conference, but today we’re not they weren’t fund-raising day two thousand eleven, travis, do you see a difference in the willingness of male donors versus female in terms of the the time commitment, willingness to spend time? You know, i think that’s an interesting question, and, you know, i a lot of my work is with our our female group, but also with our young professionals group, okay? And i would say that in our young professionals group there’s really not that discrepancy between the amount of time to volunteer, the males and females of that generation are really wanted to eat together, and i would say that with with people that i’m working with on the women’s group there it is a little bit easier to get women out to volunteer opportunities because i think they just really want to see there the work in the fields, and and i think a lot of times, men, i can take it from you as the fundraiser to hear about what their work is doing. Our work is doing it. Michelle, do you see a difference between men and women in terms of their their desire for understanding outcomes? And what the impact of their gift is, is there a difference across the genders there? There probably is i think that women are often underestimated and their willingness to really want to do dig into the data and the financials and all of those pieces. And of course, if your stereo tell you, you know that they wouldn’t get it or that they don’t want to really spend time with a balance sheet or that they’re more emotionally driven or whatever the some of the negative stereotypes are on. Some of them were positive, but does though, right? But i think that women do want to understand what what the back end thinking is, and particularly as you deal with the higher end givers and the more sophisticated philanthropists, they know what they’re looking for, and there are certain delivery bols that they expect, and there are certain organizational structures they expect to be in place with their financial or otherwise, and they ask those questions, and they think very seriously about where they’re going to give their money, you know you’re going through, i can piggyback on that, you know, we have a group of our committee that comes in and meets with our program’s staff to really talk about what they’re doing and and what the investment that women united has made in united way is really is doing, and they ask the toughest questions they want to know exactly what the budget is. They want to know what the money is being spent on, and i think that that is the thinking that you were alluding to earlier is completely backwards. I think they really want to understand the entire issues they want from from costs of services to then what the services are actually doing, that they really want the whole full, holistic three sixty view of initiative. Michelle, you’re experienced. Yeah, and i would say that we’ve sound found more different is between sectors and where people worker identify themselves and professional sectors than male female. So, you know, sort of the hedge fund circle has a certain way of thinking about a problem, and they’ll come at you with a set of questions that are almost predictable, and lawyers have a certain way of approaching it more so than a cross gender lines. I’m not going to ask you to comment on your own individual situation is that united way or united states fund for your staff? Generally, do you see women adequately represent went on boards? So from where i said, i think there’s a couple of key pieces, one is that our ceo is an amazing female leader, and that has really set the tone and a lot of ways for not only supporting our initiative with women philanthropists but inboard leadership. So the four, therefore women, all board members, that air chairing our women in philanthropy initiative and the strategy around engaging ultra high net worth individuals to support the u s from for unicef, and they have all stepped up phenomenally, and i think it’s been critical in having those female representatives on the volunteer level onboard leadership roles, and they represent really influential rose rolls and the rest of their lives, and they’ve brought that to bear on this effort. It’s been absolutely critical about your travis do you worry about again? Not necessarily united way, but do you worry about there being inadequate representation of women on boards? I think there’s there’s more work that needs to be done, but i think that a lot of organizations are realizing that women make very, very strong boardmember is there much more thoughtful about the issues? They really want to understand the full picture of what is going on, and they don’t just sort of make those knee jerk reactions that sounds like an ideal boardmember and and, you know, i can say for the united way system, we recently did a survey of the one hundred and twenty different women’s leadership groups that united way has across our system, and what we have found, which is astounding, is that from the year two thousand seven to two thousand nine, which had the huge financial meltdown united ways that had boards with that were made up of thirty percent or more female participation, their women’s group grew about twenty eight percent in fund-raising and fund-raising and dollars contributed just versus those united ways that had less than thirty percent makeup of women on their board grew their fund-raising grew one percent. So really shows the power i think, of women to really come together, rally around a cause and get people to contribute at very, very critical times, i have to say credit to the person who thought toe look att that variable female representation on the board that’s not that’s, not a very and its outcome in fund-raising that’s, not by any means a typical variable that you would see and look at the outcome of the correlation with interesting let’s. See michele, in terms of let’s, talk a little about, like nuts and bolts. I don’t want to spend a whole lot of time on soliciting women, but we’ll spend a couple of minutes you have advice that’s particular to women about asking, you know, your your work is an ultra high net worth but not necessary, you know, generally soliciting women advice? I don’t think it’s any different than soliciting a man because i mean ideally still stations at that level happened face-to-face one on one and it’s doing good fund-raising and reading people’s faces and listening to the cues and paying attention to what they’re interested in and compassionate about or passionate about. Rather, i think in that regard, it’s all the same, some of the messaging and the way that we engage them leading up to that is where the differences okay and that’s, the stuff we’ve been talking about. Exactly travis, how about for you closing thoughts, i think, really, the only thing that i would add is just making sure that there is a really good next step for them to be involved in a substantive way beyond writing the check, whether that is taking them out on a program visit to go see see the work, whether they they’re volunteering at a school, whatever it is, just make sure that there there’s a really solid next up for them to get involved because they really want to get involved, okay? I just realized we have a lot more time than i than i thought you’ve done yourself. You had your seminar already today or it’s coming up, we had any provocative questions from the audience that you want to share around the subject. We’re interesting, yeah, i was talking to some of my colleagues and some of the other sessions and comparing notes on questions, and i think the one that i heard that came up in all the questions was sort of how to say no, no to a gift, no to the wrong gift or no to a donor who wants to direct very specifically, in a way, that’s. Not in line or give them right. They want to make a decision. That’s not really their decision to make and navigating that. What was your what was? Did you have that in your session or what? Wait. Okay. I know. I mean, i have one of the most important things. Is the fundraisers to know when to say no? And how does they know? And it’s? Not always easy and not everyone’s. Good at saying no, but giving people what we talked about is creating option so people feel like they’ve made it legitimate choice, but not beyond what your realm of possibilities are. So a multiple choice question as opposed to an open ended question where people can say, this is really what i want to dio bye still not creating the program from scratch and tweaking the little details, but giving them real opportunity to be a part of the experience as well the experience of of whatever the program is. So if it’s, you know, for us, it’s obviously in the field and international development. But, you know, even if it’s the question came from someone who was working in parks, even if it’s a parks project making them a part of how that plays out. How about you, travis? Any questions that came up in your program that you want to share one? Well, i think that that my group is able to direct the money at the end of the year that they raise, and that can create a lot of nervousness, i think, among program staff and really, you know, and i know it’s something that unicef does as well, we don’t just open it up and say, okay, you’ve got this big pot of money, where do you want to put it? You know, we we really bring them in so that they can meet with our program staff and give them sort of a menu of options of where we think they could have the most impact and take it from there because we’ve really been able to develop relationships where they understand that we’re going to give them what we think is bad that’s for the organization as a choice, and it really allows them to feel like they’re making a choice and have an investment in what we’re doing. My block post is a test of google plus for your non-profit i was interviewed by new york enterprise report for an article on using google plus in small business, and i thought my ideas might help you to evaluate google plus for your non-profit now, of course, caveat, i’m not a social media guru expert thought leader, a small business owner. And so with that caveat, i’ll tell you what i’m doing with google plus and how i’m evaluating it, and you can see if that makes sense for your office or not. I’m really looking at the people who become my friends on google plus and the features that it ends up offering for the business profile pages, which is, you know we know them in facebook as a fan page. Google plus doesn’t have business profiles yet, but we all expect him to be coming, and google says they are coming within the next couple of months, so i’m going to be interested in who the people are, who joined me on google plus either because i invite them or they’re inviting me if they’re the same as the people i know on facebook, i’m probably going to be less likely to spend a lot of time, you know, keeping up a very active profile page on google. Plus, i would certainly have one, but how much time i devote to it is really what the issue would be on the same thing with the features. If it’s pretty much the same features as a facebook fan page, then i don’t really see advantage, but if it has some things that i’m looking for that i don’t see in facebook like for me, it’s ah good calenda ring application and a good, solid polling application like we can do in surveymonkey but built in facebook doesn’t have those things and it has polling, but not really a strong one, so if it has good features, i’ll be again more likely toe spend more time keeping a very active business profile page on google plus, so those are my ideas around evaluating whether to do that for my business, i don’t know if that’s of value to you, it might be in looking at google plus for your small non-profit um, you can see more detail about that on my block at m p g a d v dot com, and that is tony’s take two for friday, august twelfth with me now is maria simple. It’s a real pleasure to have you were going to be talking about linked in today. Lincoln has some new initiative for non-profits you want to explain what what’s up there? Yeah, absolutely so what’s kind of interesting about it is that linked in a little earlier this year, actually in may, haddon i po and so now they are actually deciding they’re going to dedicate some resource is in terms of against money, but as well as human resource is to the non profit sector now on ideo aipo means means what jargon jail mary-jo actually started issuing stock, they became a public company, so initial public offense and they actually launched something called lincoln non-profits solutions, and so what they’ve decided is that they have three point six million individual members who actually identify themselves as either employees or board members of a non-profit so they realize that there’s a tremendous amount of potential to help the nonprofit sector and they are actually i’m going to be helping people they back, they’ve launched a page called learned dot lincoln dot com forward slash non-profits, where they actually give the non-profits both as non-profit professionals, but also as organization’s best practices on tips and tools for how to make the most out of the lincoln for non-profit so they’re looking at both individuals and organizations, you say, and that that three point six million, i’m sure there are a lot more than that because there are one hundred million linkedin users, isn’t that right? Yes. So, yes, you are. But you know, what kind of interesting is that? They somehow been able to identify that there, there are, you know, the three point six million who are somehow connected to the non profit sector, right? Because i’m sure, based on keywords in their profile or just the way they what they identify their employer as, but i’m sure that’s low. I’m sure there are more than three point three and a half percent of the lincoln community working for non-profits but so maybe this initiative will will draw out some more. But even with that three point six million, yes, so they have this the the u r l you gave that’s the learning center, right? Yes. That’s correct. They have a specific learning center set up now for the nonprofit sector. And when you’re on that page, if you scroll all the way to the bottom, they actually have a contact a cab. So their interest sted in hearing from non-profits selves non-profit professionals and organizations and board members as to how lincoln can best serve the specter. So they are open to feedback at this point in their formulating this as they go along and you spoke with someone who’s in charge of this non-profit initiative. That lengthened in you? Yes. Somebody who has recently joined linked in his name is brian breckenridge. And he is heading up the new program there. And he’s, you know, he’s very excited and he’s very open to learning from the nonprofit sector. About what, how they convinced serve the non-profits and so since you had a spoke to him recently, any inside track about what we might be seeing the into the future? Well, i don’t have any specifics to share with you, but i do know that they are planning some interesting changes, hopefully that they’re rolling out in the next, you know, in the next couple of months so it’s, you know, they’re they’re formulating this, they’re looking, they’re taking in and looking for feedback at this point and anything that they can do the best help a non-profit sector they’re looking for that feedback at this time, and then they’ll be looking to roll out some new initiatives, i think okay, and you see value in the lincoln non-profit solutions for prospect research. Absolutely i do, you realise linked in for prospect research and for prospecting. So i utilize it in both, eh? Proactive sense as well, as in a reactive okay, let’s distinguish between prospect research and prospecting. What do you mean, weird? When you say those two different things differently? What do you mean by both? By each? Okay, so if i’m doing research on a potential major donor potential boardmember for the for a non-profit and i have the name of that individual lengthen is definitely one of the places that i go to to try and formulate my profile on that individuals. So that is what i would call reactive research. I have the name of someone, and this is one of my tools that i use to do prospect research. Now proactively you, khun, take linked in and use their advance people search feature to find people who might be suitable for your non-profit for connections in a variety of situations, they have a keyword search. You can focus your search down to within a radius of your zip code of where your non-profit is located, you can focus your search down to specific industries, so if you are looking, if you are let’s, take the example of a on environmental group, right let’s say they are looking to connect with more individuals in their community who are involved in some sort of environmental services so they would be able to conduct this search. Now, obviously, when you conduct a search on lincoln, first of all, you have to have your own lincoln personal on dh. This is using the advanced certain advanced search. Is that right? That’s? Correct. Have on the right on the upper right hand side called advance. Okay, you quick, matt. It opens up an entire new search screen that most people haven’t really access, you know, realize it’s there. And the more rich your own network is, the more people you are connected to, the richer the search results will be for you right now. If i were, let me give you two very contrast examples. I actually happen to have over five hundred connections in my lengthen network. So my search results would be drastically different from somebody who is a very new to lincoln and only has a network of, say, twenty, thirty, fifty people. Because you’re always shown how many degrees you’re separated from someone. So the more people i have in my network, greater search results going so so you mean when? You’re doing this advanced search you’re searching all the hundred million people in linked in and it’s telling you which of those are in your first degree, meaning you’re connected to them directly, which are too removed from you, which are three removed from you. Is that what you think you were searching the whole population of linked in? You can. Yes, but you can ask lincoln to just focused down the search results for you to the people you might be first degree connected to second degree or perhaps where you share a group membership. Because there you’re going to be ah, lot closer. You have a lot closer of an affinity and making the one toe one connection may be easier for you. Ok? Suppose you that’s really rich that you can search the whole hundred million. Suppose you find somebody who’s two degrees removed from you and they seem like a very good i don’t know. Maybe maybe we’re provoc betting for board members. Let’s say, for this, for this environmental group that you suggested you see somebody to removed from you. What? Explain what that means. And then how can you try to meet that person? Okay, tony let’s say we come up with let’s say, i do this search and i’m looking for environmental people who and i come up with a guy named oh, i don’t know john smith. And you and i are first degree connected on lengthen that much i know, but let’s say, john smith eyes second degree connected to me through you. That means he is both first degree connected to you. And i am first degree connected to you. So you are the common link between us, right? Ok, so that would mean john is a second degree. So, like those, like those kevin bacon seven degrees from kevin bacon movie. Right? Because he’s been in so many popular movies. Okay, so you can get to him through me, in other words, that’s. Right. So what did you do? How do you do that? Well, lincoln actually provide you with the the there’s a form that you can fill out so that a message would be sent to both john and to you. Looking for that introduction. I could look to be just connect with john directly and say, john, in my my request to connect, i might say john, you and i both know tony. Andi, i think we have a lot in common. I’d love to be able to connect with you here on lincoln. Always modify that that’s that standard introduction that lincoln provides to you never just go ahead and just use the standard intro, you realize those defaults aren’t aren’t very friendly, really there’s really bare bones, but so you’re allowed to your lot to connect with john smith your lot to contact john smith, even though you’re not directly connected to him. That’s correct. I could just send him an invitation to connect and just mention your name in my little intro is toe. Why? I think he and i might want to connect, you know, it’s up to him to accept my connect. Ction request? Sure. Okay, i see what you’re doing it through the request to connect. Okay. I see. On dh. Then the alternative is you could ask me to connect you to him. That’s. Right? I could ask you directly. I could go the old fashioned way. Tony, i could pick up the phone and call you and say, tony, you know, how well do you know john is? This somebody you know very well can you make some sort of a personal introduction even outside of lincoln through an email system. But at least lincoln’s provide you with the opportunity to identify potential boardmember potential donors in very specific sectors. Yes, the phone. You could pick up the phone and do it that way. And that way we don’t have to communicate through linkedin using their default messages or which we would really like. Anyway, i never thought that you could pick up the phone, imagine it could even have lunch and we could talk about it that way. Way. Imagine. See what? See what the web can do. Encourages you to pick up the phone. How do we had we operate without linked in years ago? I don’t know. So let’s, go back to the learning center. Um, yes. So they have. They have suggestions there for individuals and non-profits maria, we have just like a minute before a break. What are a couple of the not for profit? The organizational suggestions on unlinked in. And then after the break, we’re going to detail. Well, you could create a company page at no cost. So corporations, companies. Small businesses are doing this. We i highly recommend that a non-profit create a what they call a company page for their own. Non-profit, and they actually give the example of the american red cross that has attracted thousands of followers on lengthen and so other non-profits may want to check out what they have done. So, maria, the advice that you were giving before the break is that a new organization could create a ah profile page that’s correct, and i would highly recommend that they do that and the reason tony is and and i’m not suggesting that they should set aside any of their other social media strategies and presences like that they might have on facebook or twitter, but what you want to be able to do here is this is lincoln is the professional network, so you want to be able to, of course, capture the attention of people who are in the business community. You don’t want to exclude this, so this is free, you know, obviously whoever is maintaining your presence on other social media’s would want to be able to set this up and you can upload your logo. You would be able to give a nice description about the organization, provide your website, there’s, even a mapping feature where they tie it right into google maps. So that people will be able to see precisely where your non-profit is located. So, you know, it’s free, and i think that they should take advantage of that. I think the lincoln says there about one hundred thousand non-profits that have company pages, there should be many more that’s, a that’s, a good number, but there should be a lot more. How specifically does this one do they? I mean, how do you create a a company profile or non-profit profile versus creating a personal profile? Well, of course, the help affection of of lincoln is going to be very, very helpful to you, but they also have here they give you some steps on how you might be able to do that right on the non-profit learning center that we talked about earlier, okay? And again, the girl for that is linked in dot com slash forward slash non-profits actually, it starts off with the word learn ellie, are there yet i left. Yes, thank you very much. Learn dot linked in dot com forward slash non-profits thank you. And now groups are very popular and non-profits can create their own non-profits can create their own groups and you couldn’t decide if the group is going to be a closed group, meaning that everybody has to be first approved by some sort of a group moderator thatyou’re going to appoint at your end or it could be an open group. And keep in mind that if it’s an open group, all of the discussions are open and searchable and people can just join the group without any type of moderation. That and what’s the value for having creating your own group after you’ve created your profile. Well, they might. It might be in an interesting way to host certain conversations around specific topics and, uh so they, you know, if you have, if you’re a large enough non-profit and maybe you are hosting even conferences around your specific topic, that is something that you can use the group for if you want to engage people in discussions, much like you might see discussions in other types of groups that people are on on linked in, but it would be very specific to the time of organization that you are in the population that you serve, and after you create the groups than you invite people to join is that how it works. Well, you can’t invite people to join. Yes. You definitely can do that and invite people who are already in your linked in world to join the group. But people are going to be able to find you once you are set up in a group on lengthen. You are now searchable as well. So i remember i was telling you about the search functionality. The groups are a way that people, you know, look for like somebody might look for a live networking group to join. Somebody might be looking for a group around this specific area that you serve. Okay, so yeah. So if your work is for the m r d d community, the mentally retarded, developmentally disabled, you might create a group around the service around dahna discussion around the needs about that for that community in your own communities, you could make it a very localized group. Yes, you can. Some groups are geographically localized as well. But you may not want to limit it to that. I mean, lengthen is a worldwide a phenomenon, if you will. So why not? Why not? Just open it right up and allow people? To tto learn more and you never know where that relationship is going to lead. Okay, um, they also have something called linked in recruiter for for job, for organizations looking for employees, how does that work? So what they’re doing is lincoln does have a recruiting solutions portion, which is a fee based portion to their service that’s kind of steep, isn’t it? Well, yeah, for some non-profits mean, what they’re saying in an article that i read is that they are starting as low as four hundred dollars a month when you could be a little steep saw non-profit but they are, you know, offering these recruiting solutions, if you will, at a discounted price for what they would offer the for-profit world, okay, and that’s, if you’re looking for employees that’s correct, if you look nufer employees, they have they have sort of three separate sections, one is called lincoln recruiter one is called jobs network Job slots and the other 1 is called career pages. Okay, let’s, talk a little bit just in a couple minutes we have left about the offerings for individuals who are in non-profits what what’s the advice that that the learning center gives for individuals. Well, you definitely want to make sure that your profile is as one hundred percent complete as possible. So you want to make sure that your profile itself is rich so that as you go out and try and make connections with people, you will be able tio look like somebody, obviously, that other people really want to connect with that you are a thought leader within your own community, if you will. And so it’s really like a resume on steroids, you know, your opportunity to really shine and stand out from other people, so why not make it that way? Using the status updates, i’s a great way to let people know sharing articles, having to do with sector that you serve if you are a speaker, it’s a great way to let people know where you’ll be speaking, especially as it relates to your subject matter area on dh, especially if you do a lot of speaking on behalf of your non-profit it will let people know where you’re speaking either virtually and webinar format or, you know, live format if people are looking by the way tony and forgot to mention earlier fremery we have just about it, we have just about a minute left. My guest now is william henry he’s, the executive director of volunteers insurance service association, based in woodbridge, virginia. V s is a risk purchasing group that makes insurance programs and risk management services available to private sector non-profit organizations that engage volunteers and i’m glad that his practice brings into the show. William henry, welcome. Good morning, tony it’s a pleasure to have you. How are you? I’m very well think volunteers are essential to a well running non-profit. What? Why are there risks, though, around having volunteers working with us? Upleaf well, volunteers can be subject teo physical risks. They could be injured. Sometimes. We, uh, cia claim in our program that involves a volunteer falling that’s. Probably the most frequent calls. Sometimes there are vehicle accidents. Volunteers can be injured using tools. They can have a back injury, lifting things those kinds of claims. But then also, volunteers do represent the organization and the things that they say about the organization can effect non-profit and might represent a risk. Okay, so there’s so there’s physical problem possibilities. Like possible liabilities, i guess. Physical like car. Accidents and you’re saying people falling and things like that correct, but then there’s also, while while the volunteers they’re using your name and they’re out talking about u does, that latter part is what i think we’re going to focus mostly on does that only apply during certain times? Like when you know that they’re talking about you? Or suppose they say something unfortunate and we’ll get into what that might be, but they’re at a cocktail party and they drop your name, and then they say something that’s inappropriate could apply there, too. Certainly. And in fact, in the world of social media, there really aren’t any time boundaries anymore. Eso volunteers as well as employees could be bringing up your name when their own facebook or they’re tweeting something and it’s something that employers really need to be aware off. Okay, so yeah, on dh since the volunteers they’re using your name, they could be doing things that are inappropriate, like political advocacy. Exactly what’s the problem there well and that’s. Certainly, tommy right now, getting into the election right. These in the irs has strict rules about what tax exempt organizations can do in the area. Of political advocacy and if a volunteer makes the mistake of speaking on behalf of the organization in a way that seems to favor a particular political candidate, that could actually jeopardize the tax exempt status of the organization there volunteering for. And we have talked about that in detail with our legal contributors, jean takagi and emily chan, if you go back a few weeks, you’ll find a show second half of the show, all about political speech, political advocacy, what the boundaries are. So we’ve talked about the details of where the boundaries are, but if so, if a volunteer exceeds the boundaries you’re saying, then the charity could be just as liable as if an employer and employee did it exactly. The volunteers regarded as an agent of the nonprofit organization in a case like that. And does that apply even if there isn’t anything in writing like just the executive director? Okay, take a small charity executive director asks a volunteer to help with fund-raising or maybe the host an event, and then the person says something inappropriate. It doesn’t have to be a written relationship, or now it doesn’t have to be a written relationship. No, it could be orel. Okay, and then you’re still so the volunteers then still acting as an agent, which is ah, a legal capacity, right? It would depend on what the irs is able to prove and how aggressively they would try. Okay, so how are we going to first constrain our volunteers? How do we set the rules? Well, you know, i think that the way to address most risks that go with volunteer engagement on employee relations, for that matter is training and creating an understanding up front in your orientation time period with volunteers, for example, it’s a good time to let them know what your expectations are and what they can and cannot do or say on behalf of the organization, um, it’s a good time for that matter to go over with, um, their performance standards as a volunteer and, uh, what they’re accountable for, um, volunteers just because they’re not paid, uh, doesn’t mean that they shouldn’t be accountable for their performance and a disciplined if necessary. You know, i think a lot of times charities just so grateful to have the help that they don’t want to imposed rules or are certainly even discipline, exactly. But, you know, for the best volunteers, in my view, are going to be more impressed by the fact that the non-profit has thought through its processes, to the extent that they do have procedures in place and standards that they expect, rather than just leaving the volunteer to their own devices. This is very much like conversations we’ve had with with other guests talking about board management on dh, setting expectations correctly around for board members who are also volunteers. They just happen to be senior volunteers. But obviously your suggestion is that applies toe all volunteers that’s, right? And i’m your aptly named host. And with me is william henry. We’re talking about insurance and risk management. William. What? What are some other ways that volunteers can put your your charity at risk, by my things that they say, not again? Not so much the physical, like car accidents. But aside from political advocacy, what we mentioned, social media briefly earlier. This is an area where we’ve already seen with respect to paid employees, cem clashes between employer and employee. Many employers don’t understand that the national labor relations act protects what they call concerted activity that relates to working conditions. So employees complaining on facebook, for example, about working conditions where they are that might be protected. And if they’re terminated the ceo, he might be the next person that let’s let’s take a volunteer on so that stick of volunteers right now, right? We will get to employees and practices around that. Well, how else could a volunteer get you in trouble? Well, in that same scenario with volunteers on social media, okay, just when the volunteers brought onboard, i think they need to understand that the same as with employees. Thie organization will protect its reputation that employees or volunteers rather are not. Teo blogged about the organization without, uh, going through whatever channels you you established have a director of communications for the agency. Then everything should be coordinated through that person. If the volunteer is going to comment on ina blogged about your activities. Okay? And where do we draw the line? Between what? The volunteer. Is saying personally on his or her own blawg versus what what he’s saying about he or she is saying about the charity? I mean, is it just if the charity’s name is used, then they’re speaking as an agent of the charity? Is, is it like that simple? Well, one thing that you one way that you could look at it is that, uh, the communications that you would have that charity would have with its clients are privileged information that you would not that you would certainly want to restrict public access to so the volunteer should be that should be put on notice that anything that’s said about the relationship between the agency and its clients should be considered privileged information and not used in social media. No public comment, ok? And i know this is all very gets all very fact sensitive. Andi, i know you’re not an attorney also, so i’m not trying to put you on the spot to answer legal questions. Just, you know, to the extent you’re you’re aware, i just want i want people to be generally aware that, um, there’s there’s risk around volunteers, volunteers are outstanding, but need to be a little cautious, right? And it’s a good thing also for any organization to remind volunteers that it could be a dangerous world out there and online publishing that whether or not the organization is reflected in a bad light, there’s the danger of defamation and you just don’t want volunteers to get in trouble just you wouldn’t want employees to get in trouble, okay? And the stuff that we’re talking about there is insurance, i presume, that can protect the charity from these risks. Well, general liability insurance, yes covers personal injury, which can be defamation as well as bodily injury and property down ok, that you just don’t want it to get to that point. It all comes back to good communication helping the volunteer understand the mission of the organization it’s priorities and, uh, the areas in which they need to go through channels, right? And as you said, that might be a director of communications, but in a smaller agencies doesn’t have that, it might just be the executive director it could be, or the coordinator of volunteers and everybody’s so busy but shouldn’t ever be so busy that you can’t take time to make. Certain that volunteer understands his or her responsibilities and the channels to go through and speaking for the organisation much better to prevent a problem than let one emerge and then have to invoke your general liability insurance policy exactly because people look att things so differently that the supervisor of volunteers or the executive director might never even i suspect that a volunteer would in good faith say something they shouldn’t say. So that’s. Why, with any volunteer involvement, think through what the task is established standards for the volunteer and make sure that they’re communicated and the volunteers accountable for them. Excellent. Thank you. Let’s move to employees. What is generally what are some of the risks around employees? Will the whole area of employment practices liability just continues to expand? We mentioned the facebook postings that are protected by the national labor relations act. Retaliation is a large on growing area of concern in two thousand ten. I believe it wass it past race discrimination is the most frequent cause of charges brought by the sea. And what kind of what kind of complaints are we talking about? Their retaliation was well, the employees would say that. Uh, he or she was wrongly terminated or given on unwanted assignment, or even just moved to a different office for reasons that i are based in retaliation because they exercise their rights. Which is why, uh if if employees is performing poorly, then the record really needs to be documented down to the last detail so that retaliation can’t be used as a pretense. Um, the americans with disabilities act also continues to expand in terms of employer liability. The focus now clearly is on what the employer will do to accommodate the disability and not what the employees or the applicant does to prove that they do have a disability. Okay, so you’ve seen the shift in in claims there has been, in the most recent regulations implementing the d a that’s clear. Okay, interesting to you. You make the point that this doesn’t have to be ah, firing a termination. It could just be a sze yu said, moved to a different office or maybe not promoted an employee not promoted, right? I mean, what are other ways that charities are accused of retaliating? Or maybe, you know, in some case, they actually do retaliate that that we need to be careful about. Well, another scenario is where an employee will follow-up testify on behalf or come to the defense in some way of a fellow employee who is in trouble for something and that’s natural to do it. If you believe your your friend is in the right, you’re going to want to try to protect them. So that’s fine, but the employer that needs to be aware that this is a possible cause for a retaliation claim if there’s an adverse action against that employees later. Exactly so again, your point documentation is critical, right? And another thing is, with the workforce being so mobile, if employers have hourly employees nonexempt employees wait, hold on. I have to. I want to keep you out of jargon jail on tony martignetti non-profit video. We have jog in jail. What doesn’t? What is a nonexempt? Employees exempt from what? What does that mean? If they are paid by the hour, generally speaking rather than a salaried employees, so that their limited to forty hours per week, if, uh, or they have to be paid overtime. Okay. And the time boundaries are just going away so that if the supervisor is sending an email or a text to an hourly employees at ten o’clock at night effectively, they’ve put them back on the clock and they might be liable for paying overtime and sometimes, you know, months can go by before the employee says, hey, by the way, you owe me over time and it can really accumulate. So you want to be very careful about respecting with work hours that an hourly employees supposed to be working and i go beyond those and we’re going to talk shortly about mobile devices, we’ll get to that that that that may or may not be issued by the by the charity, but very interesting about the work hours. Okay, um, you mentioned facebook there’s something called facebook fired-up facebook firings, right? Yeah, we’ll talk about those that actually happened to ah non-profit organization. In september of two thousand eleven, it was a buffalo, new york non-profit one of the employees had posted a comment on facebook complaining about another employee and about working conditions, and then four other employees also commented on that posting. Now they it all occurred outside of working hours. The employees were using their own computers and the employer fired all five of them on the basis that their comments amounted. Teo harassment of the employee who was the target of the comments and that was in violation of the organization stated policy against harassment. But the judge in the case in l r b and national labor relations board administrative law judge rule that those comments were within the scope of a protected activity because they dealt with terms and conditions of employment. So and he ordered those employees reinstated. And there have been over one hundred cases brought before the national labor relations board in the last two years involving exactly these kinds of situations. Facebook firing i’m with william henry he’s with me and he’s, executive director of volunteers insurance service association. William what is the earl? Where can people find find you it’s? Ah, www dot seema world that see, i am a world dot com. Okay, thank you. What? What can we do? Insurance wise to protect against these employees? Retaliation claims well, the directors and officers liability insurance policy response to claims of wrongful termination or these kinds of employment practices against the organization. Ok, so that would be the officers, part of directors and officers policy correct. Is that right? Okay, is that is that? Is this very typical coverage or is this something that charity has toe specifically ask about? Well, the the broadly written directors and officers policy for nonprofit organizations would include employment practices liability, but you always want to make sure you know, that you get a standard policy that has it and not a policy that doesn’t, because under the directors and officers, liability claims, two thirds at least our employment practices related, actually, wrongful termination. Okay, okay. But as we talked about, that could be other forms of retaliation to correct. All right, let’s, talk a little about the mobile devices than others issues around a charity that issues ipads, our phones or any any, any tablet or phone what’s the what’s. The problems there, um, if if the charity issues that equipment, the employees for the volunteer, for that matter needs to know that it belongs to the organization. And therefore so do any message is sent using that equipment any messages at at any time of day, right at any. Whether that whether it’s during working hours or not, if their scent on equipment that charity owns, the charity needs to protect its right. Teo read those messages that anytime reid so if so, if i’m issued ah, phone and i text my children i don’t have children but this’s a hypothetical so let’s go crazy. So i text my daughter while i’m on vacation. The charity has a right to read those those texts that i send and the ones that i received back from her right now, i don’t want to create the impression that this is something charities should do, or this is an orwellian nightmare. All right, but if if there are messages that might be damaging to the organization in some way, the organization should protect its right, and this can be done just with the employee manual, the employees or the volunteer read those those conditions then, you know, messages can be intercepted. Khun b read it any time, and then they have to sign that they acknowledge that. Okay, you know, many, many people feel, are under the mistaken impression that they have a right to privacy just because the message was private and not work related, but that’s not true if they’re using equipment issued by the organization? Yes. That low expectation of privacy. Okay. So, so communication up front setting the expectations so that there aren’t any ugly surprises later. Okay? Seems with the volunteers. Exactly. Should the volunteers just jumping back for a second? Should they be signing the rules around around their their work for the charity to yes, i think it goes back to the performance standards for the volunteer the orientation period, letting them know what they’re responsible for, what they can and cannot do. Okay, whether it’s the use of organization equipment or working with clients or anything else involved with their work, have them signed those rules. So everybody knows that they have been read and understood. Okay, let’s, talk a little about the disaster planning. We have just about two minutes before we have to. We have to wrap up. Um, how do you how does a charity approach disaster planning? It sounds don’t very daunting. Well, it doesn’t have to be. Um, thie organization should get its best people together, and best people might include someone across town or someone in a linked in group who has been through the process before and start with the question, what could possibly go wrong and think about, uh, you know, scenarios such ranging from, uh, employer, employee or volunteer injuries too back-up volunteer injuring a client or perhaps even a client, injuring a volunteer and just through let let your imagination go, you know, uncle mentioned the second mile foundation in state college, pennsylvania, okay, and we have just about a minute before we have to go, so if they had the first exercise and years ago, they might have come across the possibility that ah, volunteer even the founder of the organization could be charged with injuring the children in their care. But to get to that point, i don’t really have to be willing to consider anything, so because if it can’t be discussed, it can’t be managed. And you mentioned using linkedin and people in your community maybe who were in other charities, but within your organization, i would think boardmember should be involved in this boardmember sze, veteran volunteers, they’re very good and that’s a good way to say to that veteran volunteer we value your experience in your knowledge, newer volunteers for that fresh perspective and your senior staff people and get together and come up with at least twenty five, because there are that many at least risk scenarios and then determine how severe would it be? If this happens, how often is this likely to happen and create a nexus there between the severity and the frequency? That’s, the approach that we suggest, william, we have to leave it there. This is important enough to me that i want to mention it again. Two weeks ago, my blogged was what i believe. I believe there are two things that are the reasons that i do this show and do all the the work and produce all the content that i do for charities. The first is that small and midsize charities need to improve. I believe they need to be better at delivering services and measuring their their outcomes from those services better at fund-raising compliance of all types could be financial, legal, exploiting technology managing donors. And, second, that small and midsize charities deserve the help that they need to improve. And i feel that they deserve it because everybody in charities is working very hard already. I know people want to be better have their organization improved, but i also know that small midsize shops can’t do it on their own. So i help these. I hope i do that’s my intention that’s. Why i produced the show. A tribe log. I have the podcast fund-raising fundamentals for the chronicle of philanthropy. I do a lot of speaking it’s all because of those those two beliefs, and those are my motivations. Now i have a pre recorded interview with nancy levin from philanthropy day in westchester county, new york, spinning your event theme here’s that interview my guest now is nancy levin, she’s director of development and external affairs for my sister’s place, and her conference topic is when an event is not just an event before, during and after spinning your theme. Nancy eleven welcome, thank you very much and thanks for inviting me to join you today, it’s a pleasure, what are what are non-profits not doing with events that you would like them to be doing? One of the things that my sister’s place has found over the last five years is that when we’re putting together a special event, that the idea behind the event is not just to put people in a room to raise money and to get corporate tables. On dh have a silent auction obviously we’re always going to meet our financial goals, but it’s really to look at the year of programming and what issue we would like to bring to our many publix that they might not be familiar with otherwise. So, for example, in today’s workshop, what we talked about was the issue of human trafficking, human trafficking is to the community now what domestic violence was to the community forty years ago. People don’t speak about it and don’t understand it in the ways that they now understand the issues of intimate partner abuse. In two thousand seven, new york state passed a law many laws involving human trafficking, and my sister’s place was appointed to be the human trafficking service provider for the lower hudson valley region. At that point, we began in earnest to really look at how are we going to engage the issue of human trafficking, the service provision to victims of human trafficking and the resource development needed teo fund human trafficking programming into the work of our agency and toward that, and we really made our two thousand nine two thousand ten program year from a resource development. And external affairs perspective the year of human trafficking. Okay, but how does this all relate to events? You’re absolutely and we’ve run two large public events, one event in the fall, and that is a luncheon, and we run a large benefit in the spring. Between those two events we bring in about eight hundred thousand dollars, which of the total of one point, eight million dollars a year, is of significant piece of the private philanthropy of our agency. What we did was we looked at our fault luncheon and said, how is it that we would like to deliver the message message about the issue of human trafficking and educate our our attendees about it and also for them to have a call to action? We feel very strongly that people should leave an event for mice from my sister’s place, knowing and having something to do that they would not have known about or done otherwise. And so, while every non-profit organization has a very significant mission and helps to enhance the quality of life for the community, my sister’s place specifically looks at issues and says, this is not something that people necessarily know about. And we want to engage them, we want to inform them, and we want them to walk out and say that they want to be part of the solution in making permanent change in the way our society thinks about about different issues. All right, so as we’re planning our event, how do we plan to engage people so that they do become informed? Absolutely. The first component part that really is most significant in the success of any event is the leadership development, having strong co chairs and a committee as anybody that’s listening to non-profit radio nose is going to contribute immeasurably to your ability to be financially successful. A lot of people may not know that’s why you’re here toe help them explain that i don’t understand some may of surely, but a lot of people may not. They may not have done a lot of event programming when you have a special event, while you might be the best of them planner in the entire world and the most organized person and you could even be the best fundraiser around, but without having partners on your lace side, which is your volunteer side to help you. To make that event come to fruition and to bring their friends and associates not justus attendees, but as investors to the event, you might meet the financial success, but you will not meet your program goals, and you will not develop the future leadership and philanthropist to the agency. So how do we recruit the right people to be the chair and co chair, the natural first place to go to recruit your co chairs and your leadership is to your board of directors to to ask your board, can they help to identify people that will find this issue that you’re addressing compelling? Find your agency compelling people that you want to put on the committee so that they start to learn about the work so that they start to bring people in on more informal with a lower risk basis? Chairs for your events have to be able to make the commitment to significantly fund-raising and support your event. So when you’re thinking about someone they might be, you might be thinking about thie district attorney or the deputy district attorney that’s dealing with your issue. However, the reality is that that person, while they might be so knowledgeable they might not be the appropriate fund-raising vice chair or chair for your event. They probably are a very good speaker for your event. They can substantively helpyou. But in terms of leadership, what you want is somebody that wants to be knowing. But that also has capacity to bring in people from the outside and to also be personally supportive in the most meaningful way that’s appropriate for them. All right, now we’ve recruited our co chairs. Now, do you have a preference for is it better to have two people? Is co chairs or one chair is sufficient? If there is a presence that question, try todo well, we try to do is to always have somebody from our board of directors that has agreed to serve in a chair’s position. We also at my sister’s place have an honorary board of directors. So we also have a member of our honorary board to serve as a co chair. And then we have one outside set of co chairs people that are either involved corporately in the work of the agency. So, for example, we’re fortunate to have avon is a significant corporate partner and swiss re the reinsurance company is a corporate partner, so we might reach out to one of them and ask them if they would serve as a co chair. Or lexisnexis is a very significant partner of my sister’s place, and we have ah, human trafficking fellowship with lexisnexis. So we’ll ask for them to be able to be engaged. His leadership. How do we divide responsibilities across all these cochairs honorary co chairs? How did the job’s sort out? Sure. Well, we do is we hold the first meeting with all of the co chairs where we do it overviewing of the event we talk about the program, we talk about the venue, we talk about the leadership and building the committee for the event and we talk about the financial goals and in terms of the financial goals right from the very outset, we put together what we call a gift pyramid, and that is how many gifts is it going to take at each level? Two attained the financial goals that we have, and we really, really pushed the issue of the gift pyramid at the first committee meeting because committee members and leadership always air excited to get to know each other, and while we’re thrilled for people’s enthusiasm to get to know each other and and to get to know the work of the agency, we want to keep people’s eye on the ball. So it’s always a very fine balance between allowing them that opportunity to have this experience be one that’s enhancing of the totality of their life, but to be very focused and maintain our professional objectives. Should we be talking about fund-raising objectives and the and the gift pyramid at the recruitment stage, where we’re just inviting people to be the co chair so that they understand what the expectations are? Or yes, when we recruit leadership, we always give them what the expectation is of them as leadership in what the financial goals of the event, or it’s at the committee meeting that we really defined, how is it that we get there? And and what can each of us do in the many walks of life that we each walk in to help us to get to that place? Okay, now so where we’ve recruited our leadership, we’re now how how is the organization supporting them as as they are? Going out and doing their fund-raising work, my sister’s place spends a good deal of time and energy on putting together our materials for recruitment and for the implementation of the event itself. We immediately create branding and image ing for the event we work with a designer on dh. I happen to be looking at her across the room right now, because she’s here we work with the designer and we put together a zay, said the branding for it with the invitation covered and then out of the invitation cover comes to save the date and a few different a few different monograms that we can pull off of the invitation itself that will be able to use on printed materials, whether it be no cords or flyers or sponsorship forms, et cetera. We get the printed information in a form and present each committee member and each leadership member a package for them to be ableto work with both individuals, corporations and anybody else that they might be able to speak with on our behalf is my sister’s place also going out with the volunteers to help them in the fund-raising we work with volunteers in the way that they believe will be most effective for them and oftentimes a volunteer might say that they really want this support and they and they don’t even really necessarily want to be a spokesperson. They would like to just make the introduction and bring us in to do the presentation of the agency and of the event itself and of the benefits of becoming engaged in a sponsor of the event. We try to follow the lead of where people take us. We don’t ever want to presuppose a certain way to make something happen. What we want to do is have many different tools in our tool kit to be ableto effectuate them being most successful and feeling good about their experience. Nancy levin is director of development and external affairs at my sister’s place, and we’re talking about your event management and theming your events. Her conference topic is when an event is not just an event before, during and after spinning your theme. So now as you and the volunteer leadership are going out, or maybe they’re going alone but a sze yu said, however, there most comfortable information is coming in questions air coming in. From potential potential attendees, potential table purchasers. What i really want to get the details of the the support that you give to thee, the volunteers who does all this follow-up to the meetings, we work with the volunteer to provide the follow-up information that they may want to do the follow-up individually, or they may ask us to do the follow-up they might say, we’ve made the introduction that you take it from there, you run with it, we have what we have, what we call a moves management system, which is that we have a list of prospects, we have a list of people that we believe will be we’ll find this enticing, and we very strategically moved through the list and divide people up and make sure that every stone is uncovered so that we maximize our ability for resource development. What we will do is sit in a weekly development meeting, and we will. I have a small staff of people, and we will look through every name and update one another with any activity. That’s gone on. Have they called? Have they researched? Have they have they ran any names by us to make sure? That there’s no conflict. And then we will make sure that those person, those people in question, will be receiving a phone call with a request for a meeting, a package in the mail. An email with a link to our eve i tte version or ari sponsorship version. Because of all the many modes that we all work in these days, a combination of social media, website, e blast and then traditional hard materials. We have so many ways, as we all know, since we receive all these many modes from other people to be able to create a cocoon of of opportunity for people to really know that this is going to be ever present in there, you know, in their communications modes over the next couple of months. Um oh, yes, oh, now this is an ongoing process. Volunteers were out meeting, that is so then there soliciting and information is going out from my sister’s place to support them as questions develop what’s one more thing that we should be thinking about that you think is key before the event before the event. We really need to spend a lot of focus on program because you don’t want to just get the room filled with three hundred people, god willing, you want to be able to have three hundred people in the room that are going to be moved by the eric their experience. So in addition to all of the recruitment components, what we’re looking at is how do we create the most compelling evening? Well, you create a compelling event by looking at what’s going to bring people to the information that you want in a way that they will be able to hear it best when people sit down in a room, they’re going to have an attention span for you for about forty five minutes, forty five minutes of between getting their dinner and their their appetizer, their main course, etcetera and getting their program in so what you what we do at my sister’s place is we start off we really we to answer your first question, we try to keep speakers to a minimum. We have one person that serves as the emcee through the evening that kind of guide you because the more transitions you have, the more time it’s taking and then more people have to keep switching their focus on and off from from people speak differently. People’s inflections or different you want to keep them on the track of where they’re engaged, but not asking them to remain engaged in all different style with all different style speakers. So we try and keep this speaker number to a minimum. If we are honoring somebody, we have an honoree. We have the personages introducing an awarding the honoree and we have an m c and then we have some kind of program components are these? Are these speakers all timed, including the honoree? That was exactly how much time here because every speaker is timed and the timing is on. Ly is good as the paper. You put it on because as i experienced today when you know we did a presentation here at the conference today, and the conference was running fifteen minutes behind, so that meant that our presentation either had to be fifteen minutes shorter or it had to the conference had to keep going fifteen minutes, you know, every every speaker was going to be fifteen minutes late. So what you have to know is that when you create these timelines and what we call them is a chronology of the evening that you created in the ideal fashion and you accept or know that you’re going to have to be malleable, you’re not going to take a cane and pull your speaker off the stage because they’re not sticking with the time constraints in the chronology, but you have to have realistic expectations for what people are going to do, even given the instructions that you give them. Andi, i think, nancy, i just want to make clear to the audience that this applies in really in any kind of event, absolutely. This doesn’t have to be a gala with hundreds of people where there was a big cocktail hour in our sitting in the waldorf astoria thing, this could be just you. Know this could just be patient. This could just be twenty five or fifty people at a luncheon as well, right? Absolutely. One person throws the timing off by two to three minutes. You’ve got two to three people doing that you’re already fifteen minutes behind, so you always have to be mindful of that as the professional, but at the same time, you want to really be able to share with your people. Oftentimes i asked people to share their presentation, so i time what their presentations going to bay and if it really is so far afield and look, obviously i can’t go to senator gillibrand and say to her chief of staff, i want to read her speech, and if the speeches you knows ten minutes longer than i wanted to be, i can gently say to her chief of staff, will we really would you know, we’re really hoping to move the programme in this direction and in this timing, and we want the senator to have the opportunity to be able to and you try and make it feel like it’s, you’re doing something for the other person, not that you’re being critical of the way they’re presenting that you’re giving them an opportunity. A supposed tio you’re taking away from their presentation. So suppose we have a lot of people we want to honor. Is it a mistake to have? I guess you could have. I mean, you could have too many honorees, and then the night is going to drag beyond the forty five minutes of attention that people have. Not only is it going to drag, but it also has not might not give the due to the honorees that you want them to have what we have done when we do group different groups of honorees. So if we’re honoring community groups a junior league, um ah on employee group inc ah, nde es a church based social action committee. What we will do is from the podium we will speak about each one will put a little thirty second short about each group together thirty second short video about each group together we’ll speak about them from the podium. We’ll speak about what they’ve done on behalf of our agency and we’ll ask them to stand at their seats and we acknowledge them and we take pictures with them before. The event starts at a predetermined place that’s set up for photography and do pictures and award presentation so that we’re not moving three or four or five people up to the stage to potentially speak and tio then take up another half hour in programming and wee wee, when we first did this, we were quite concerned that the honorees would feel offended that we weren’t giving them. Ugh, this really wasn’t an honoring us really was kind of paying tribute, which essentially is true, but what was the reaction? Every honoree was perfectly fine and comfortable, and i’m talking about everybody from a ceo to a big corporation. Teo, a junior league president, we have never met resistance from it. They understand that people you know, around on tight time frames, we have to recognize the change in our world and that people have limited attention span and limited time and that while they want to be supportive, they want to be supportive in the way that they can do it. That fits in with their lifestyle that fits in with their their personal, you know, their own personal attention spans and limited abilities. So what we want to do is really keep that at the forefront when we’re figuring out how to program nancy, would you have just about two minutes left about post event? Well, what what’s your advice around extinction, that theme on din the important follow-up to the event absolutely post event again, when we think of our theme post event, what we’re looking for is what’s going to come out of this event from both the fund-raising in a programmatic perspective. So after our human trafficking programs in both the fall in the spring are human trafficking fund-raising events, we were able to do a film screening at the jacob burns film center, we were able to do a number of round tables at different peoples there’s other events weigh many events, we call the many events, and then we’re able to create other small fund-raising opportunities to do that, and then you start to also really build and have evolving leadership for your agency because they become more deeply engaged in the issue. It’s also another way of bringing people back to something closer. I’m not as large an event, but but cracked its great follow-up because now you can spend more. Time talking about the agency and its work and it’s much more compelling, interesting than an email or a letter follow-up correct, absolutely. And you’ve gotten good response to them tow those many events? Yes, absolutely are round tables have been so well attended that the notion of a round tables that you have twelve people when you have twenty two people that want to come it’s, not a round table it’s a small event. So we really have been very focused on getting captains from communities to host individual round tables. So now here you are creating leaderships from different areas for your agency so that you start to have point people in different communities that you can call upon for a variety of different things and that your board of directors does not always become the only go to place for your agency. When you’re looking for people to become ambassadors, you want your event to raise money, to build awareness of an issue and build the next group of ambassadors for your agency out there in the larger community. And i believe if you accomplish those goals, you can feel really good about spinning your theme to make a successful event and a successful fund-raising operation nance, eleven, is director of development and external affairs at my sister’s place. Naturally, my guest now is julia bonem she is principal of career change for good, an executive coaching firm dedicated to helping corporate executives transition into the non-profit sector and non-profit professionals move up when she started her consultancy two years ago, julia had twenty four years of experience in non-profit development, very pleased that her practice brings her into the studio. Julia welcome. Thank you. Thank you for having me today. Telefund have you, um, what? So what’s a yurt top idea for making the transition from something corporate into a job in non-profit well, it’s very important, tony, to be very committed to a mission or two. Obviously, if we’re interested in animal rights, for example, or women and children’s welfare to really have that nailed down, we don’t want to have sixteen interests when we go out into the market. Although we may have those or the or the standard, i’ll do anything i just want to, i just want to give back really, really very unfocused and really, really difficult in the market right now, the market is a very crowded place it’s very noisy when people tell me when i’m coaching them that they’re open when they initially start with mayor, we have our initial consultation that is fine, but in terms of getting out there and branding, it is really important in the networking in the written and oral communications that they have a very specific focus. The second part of that is in addition to being really committed when we speak to one, two, three missions that they have some form of non-profit experience it’s very common when i’m seeing career changers that they have not everybody but that ah, good, a goodly number of them have corporate experience have transferrable skills, but you can, you know, jump up and down about a mission, but unless you’ve done specific volunteerism and i can talk a little bit more about project work, get into the project work it’s very hard for an employer in this market to think about bringing somebody on board that doesn’t really have an understanding of how non-profits work, okay, before we get into the volunteering and proving your commitment, are there sectors in the corporate side that air that seem like you’re? Finding more people from particular sectors that particular careers within corporate that want to make the move to non-profits than than others. Well, as many of us know and it’s been in the news, the law field attorneys are particularly exp burian sing a lot of turmoil right now with the downsizing of firms and even in house ah, loitering within corporations and so a lot of attorneys air looking to use their very fine, in many cases writing skills and analytical skills to transfer over into non-profit other development work and other parts of non-profit besides attorneys, well, there’s a lot of downsizing as we know in corporate america, particularly on the financial side. And so some of those people are looking to move over with their financial skills with their spread sheet and, you know, cfo skills into non-profits that khun use them on the cfo ceo side. So you said a lot of people initially are open, which is good how can someone focus on one or two non-profit commissions? Well, what i do with people is really start to drill down on what their interest areas are and come up with targets, so as i said, before we don’t wanna have a plethora of targets, we want to have one, but how do you two three figure out what? So we we very often people are able to figure out the missions that they’re interested. And so, as i said before, animal rights children, women’s welfare could already could be charities that they already give two absolutely where volunteering usually people have a very clear idea about which missions motivate them. The mutt most the second piece is what size organization they want to work in, and that could be a cultural preference. I like working in a small entrepreneurial startup, or it could be a cultural preference for a larger, generally more specific job functions that come from working in a major university or hospital, so stewardship or major gifts or an in house attorney, which not all non-profits have and or, you know, a cfo type position as opposed to cfo and operations. The third part of the target, which is usually harder for people, is what function they want to perform so often people know that they want to get into fund-raising or they know they want to get into the law side. But they’re not quite sure they may have been an attorney in other cases in a law firm, but they’re tired of practicing law so they don’t know that they want to transfer their skills but not their job title sabat attorney or general, exactly, and that’s where the hardest work comes in. All right, well, let’s talk, we just have about two minutes before break let’s introduce this idea of the volunteering being specific in your in your volunteer work very, very important, and i don’t want a privilege any type of volunteerism over another. All volunteerism is important in their sector as we know, but if we want to get into a new field it’s important also volunteer strategically. So again, if i’m interested in health care, i might go to my local hospital or hospital that has been particularly helpful to somebody in my family or myself, um, rather than a specific disease foundation necessarily where those skills will be transferable, as opposed to another subject matter broker and then in addition, project management skills are very important, so we really want to dig down in the volunteerism and be able to say ana resumes at the top of our resumes, by the way, and i think we’ll get into branding a little bit more later. What are the project skills within those specific areas that i was able to get my hands into and show achievements in? We’re gonna take a break right now. We’re talking about charity transition with julia bonem on executive coach julia before the break you had you had were giving the example of strategic volunteering, and you said, if you’re interested in health care, it might be a preference for volunteering in a hospital setting versus one of the maybe maybe one of the medical causes. Why did you make that distinction? Well, it really depends on the person, but some of the medical causes air very specific, and again, i don’t want a privilege one type of volunteerism over another, but if you have a more general interest in health care or if there’s a hospital that’s particularly speaks to you or your family because they’ve been helpful to you in your particular circumstance, that might be a more logical place for you to volunteer than, say, a disease related, you know, foundation, clearly you need to spend time at an organization that’s meaningful to you get something out of it, you’re going to get great project work-life we’ll talk about it, perhaps not just do something because it seems good, absolutely, like it seems good for the resume is what i mean absolutely so it’s it’s a mix of both you can’t on ly be committed to the mission and expect an employer because we’re really talking about as being it’s attractive to the employer is possible in addition to serving your heart without that mission speaking to you. In addition, teo, being strategic and your volunteers is, um, from a skills and project point of view. Now this volunteering doesn’t have to be on a board that could be aboard, but if they have an opening on, if they have a need for someone like you but doesn’t have to be bored, volunteering doesn’t as long as you’re able to get that project work where you can show some specific achievements. For example, very often, when people are interested in higher education or in education in general, i counsel them to reach back, for example, to their independent school or if they went to an independent school or to their college in order to do class fund-raising, for example, or class organizing or writing for the college, these air skills that are going to be immediately picked up on because they want to involve their alumni and they want to, you know, get that extra volunteerism. Onboard and its project work really important, right? You’re stressing the importance of project work, not just sort of showing up and stuffing thiss type of so you you need to be vocal when you’re volunteering about the types of things that type of work that you want to be doing? Absolutely, you know, there may not be that opportunity right away, but as you get into your tenure and i hope people you know, develop a tenure where they are volunteering, they can’t approach people for project work if they can’t get it right away, because they’ve, you know, made their inroads, they’ve made their networking there, they’ve done their networking there, and they’re able to reach out at a certain point when the timing is right. Okay, so let’s, talk a little about the branding of yourself, and this is this will start to apply to people who are within non-profits already capsule and want to make it just a job change, not a not a career change. Obviously the resume is critical. What of the other tools that we’re branding ourselves with? Well, the resume is critical if i could just go back for second because we want to get the non-profit volunteerism if we haven’t worked in a non-profit before at the top of the resume and their ways to do that a lot of times, it’s buried at the bottom, particularly for career changes because they’ve been using a certain resume and corporate that they’re not, you know, necessarily knowledgeable about how to translate that into a non-profit setting. So how do we get that upfront instead of, like you’re saying community activities way down at the at the bottom? Well, we can have a section called non-profit experience a top with there description of what they’ve been doing, but more importantly, the achievements that they’ve had in their project work, and then we can have a section called other corporate experience. I prefer other because it’s sort of de emphasizes in heading what they’ve done by highlighting it as corporate as opposed to other experience that might be transferrable. Okay, on the other parts of brandon and their three other parts of branding are the aural pitch, which is so important, then goes back to what we spoke about at the beginning of the program in terms of targets, so we want to be able to say very specifically and it’s very much like a business pitch for those of us who have mbas air transferring over from corporate sector or raising venture capital, for example, who we are, what we’ve accomplished with some specific examples to examples, preferably what we want to do next. And this is the most difficult part are unique value proposition. Okay, let’s, let’s. Come back to the aural pitch and the details let’s just lay out what? What? What are branding methods are right now? Well, that’s one of them on paper, we also want to have well online. We also want to have in written form. Arlington on arlington needs to have the key words in that very important real estate right below our name what we want to do, it doesn’t necessarily have to reflect what we’re doing right now. So i have somebody, for example, who is not a director of operations right now but has director operations, you know, analytical skills, strong writing, for example, and then they can echo those within the linked in profile in the summary and specialty section. The idea is to try and be found, if you will, by people that are interested in your background as employers and as recruiters to a certain extent, which we’ll talk about later and also anywhere you’re going to be talking to somebody, either in a networking context, networking with hiring managers or for a job interview, you’re going to be checked out on the web and so it’s going to be a regular google check and also on linked in check, and people want to see what you’re about, whether you’re going to fit in based on your experience and based on the way you present yourself, okay? And there’s there’s one more tool that we need to have, right? Yeah, business card. The business card is really important, and that also has two echo what is being said under that real estate onto your name, if you will and at the top of your resume. Okay, so this is you shouldn’t be giving out for job search purposes. Career change purposes. The business card of your current employment. Well, you can on some people feel uncomfortable carrying a second card, but what i would say is optimal is to carry a second card that has more than just your name. Your email address your linked in and your phone number, which is very important, but also those keywords about what you were looking for, what you’ve done in the past so fund-raising professional major gifts, an annual giving or attorney non-profit expertise, okay? And what if you’re making the career change? What then? It should echo what your linkedin says about what you’re aspiring to absolutely aspiring is okay, we don’t necessarily have to make a ha one hundred percent history of what we’ve done on the business card. We can position ourselves because it’s all about marketing, positioning, ok, so we have the resume, the aural pitch linked in profile and and your business card absolutely what’s another. I think people get hung up on the reservation. I would ask you what what’s, another piece of advice for the resume. Just a really succinct profile about what you want to do, what you’ve done, what your core competencies are at the top. In addition to the experience that we talked about in the non-profit and other sections with quantifiable project work numbers, people get caught up on sometimes not having numbers. Numbers don’t have to be dollar signs, although that is important if you have them also know if you if you coordinate events or or you’re an events professional or you aspire to be an events professional, how many events did you do in a year? How many people attended? How many people volunteers? Did you organize anything that helps in in the quantification of what you think she knows where all those important outcomes that you mentioned earlier? Absolutely what’s your advice on length of resume two pages this fine in the non-profit setting some career changers get let’s unless these days, but particularly people who have been on wall street in the financial sector that’s a demand often that they be on one page in their own profession. I think that you, if you have, if you’re out ten years, say even five you can go to a page and a half ten, i would say more like two three is excessive, i think in this market, ok, even for someone who’s got maybe twenty years, twenty five years experience, and they’re looking to make the change. Often those people will do a summary bio on a separate sheet of paper that they can submit if the employer’s interested, but certainly for first queries. I think that two pages is is the limit. Um, i mean, i could do my life in two paragraphs. One has three sentences. So concise is good. Absolutely achieved. Very little. It’s. Easy for me to convey. Convey what i have done. Well, it goes back to the marketplace. It’s. A very crowded marketplace. They say that on average and employer will look at your resume for ten seconds and you have to be able to capture in in six thickness and often in bullet points, which i really like. Ah, a clear and concise message. Okay, let’s, talk a little more about linked in. You gave a little tease about what should be on linked in profile. That important, that important real estate right below the name. Because that’s going to be seen right after what else around lincoln? I like summaries that are in the first person. I think very often when you kind of talked about here in the third person people trying to sound academic or, you know, smart tony martignetti was this and that i right? Yeah. It’s just i bring people in, and that goes. To the photo as well. The photo you want a snapshot, you don’t have to look like you know it’s a studio, you know, perfect portrait, but just to bring people in, a lot of people don’t have photos. A lot of people have very casual photos, and i like something that brings you in both the language and the visual, and then the summary section is really important to position yourself again. This is the section this’s, the narrative where you write your own paragraph, not where each job appears. Supper absolutely, that is the central summary. Go ahead, exactly. So you want to talk about your achievements again? I’m really harping achievements because they’re really important, and then you want to position yourself as you do in the oral pitch, as you do, you know, hopefully at the top of your resume about what you’re looking for and why you as opposed to anybody else in the market and those might be specific degrees that you have. It might be that you lived abroad. It might be any number of things that you bring to the project experience to the market that others may not replicate in the same way, then, on the specialties section i really like and i like a list of what you’ve done proposal writing, if you’re an attorney and this is where you would bring in your project, work from the volunteering absolutely, but in the skills and it’s called out a special specialties is it’s called that on link toga there’s, a relatively new section as well. I won’t call it new new, maybe a year to old called volunteer experiences and causes where you want to really bring that up front above, often depending on how comfortable you feel about and how involved you’ve been above the work experience. Okay? Oh, and you can move the sections around sections around now. Oh, i don’t know if people know do you know how to do that specifically? Go into the edit section where you work iss and you can bring that up? I believe i don’t know the specific, okay, but there is a way to change is a sequencing. This sequencing is really important, and then the skills come in again, where you can choose specific name tags for what you’ve done and those air also searchable by potential employers and colleagues okay, so oh, god and then groups is really important. You can choose up to fifty groups and linked in. I don’t know that you want all the e mails that come from that, but you could do daily or weekly. Jj, i just repeated change your preferences for each for each group individually you can have. So if one group is really important to you, you can get daily emails, others less important. Get weekly digests absolutely and it’s really important to start contributing selectively. I mean, you don’t want to spam everybody but as a thought leader in some of those groups, so i’m a career coach. I may want to go to one of the groups that i belong to non-profit transitions, for example, non-profit boards and start talking about some of these issues, and people will often do in lincoln in in messages to me as a result of those postings where they post questions and we start to develop a relationship. Okay, we spent a good amount of time on linked him, but it’s one of the four important tools and for people who don’t have it, they obviously need to have it they need to have it also, tony, because we need to develop over one hundred connections often we want ends to certain organizations were applying tio we’re interested in certain organizations learning more about them. It’s very difficult if you don’t have a broad network either online or offline or both to find people that can make the introductions for you into the organizations and for the opportunity, believe it or not, we have just ah committed a half or so left let’s talk a little about networking because that’s critical and we’ve been talking about online networking what’s your advice around face-to-face networking. Well, first, we want to look into who is within our immediate network family, friends, people that we know on board spouses of those people who are on boards. A second piece are events, and i counsel people to go to at least one of them a week from their alma mater, possibly in an industry specific event, so it could be the support center for non-profit management, women in development, association of fund-raising professionals, junior league sponsors a lot of events cope if you’re interested in events specifically event organizing council on protocol executives, that’s group okay, okay, and then we want to start to tap into the hidden job market where we actually list out organizations that were interested in and use linked in and other connections to try and find the hiring managers within those organizations and take meetings with them. The hiring managers not just that’s, not the hr people. This is the manager who’s your you’ll be working for at a sylar grantwriting hopefully working for starting out with a networking relationship that you hopefully keep up over time, and when an opportunity becomes available either within their organization or another one, they have a positive impression of you and are able to either hyre you refer you to that opportunity, we have to stop there. Interested simply email at info at talking alternative dot com welcome back, it’s, time for tony’s take two at roughly thirty two minutes into the hour in april, i had a block post called it’s planned giving, not product e-giving and i wanted to make people aware that there are some financial advisors who sell products like life insurance and annuities, and often they want to offer their help to your plans e-giving program. But often your program is not their first interest. Their first interest is earning commissions on the financial products that they sell and it’s amazing how when you talk to them, their best solution for your plan to giving program is just happens to be the product that they sell. This does not apply to all financial well, never financial advisors, but all people who sell financial products. I in fact, when i do seminars for clients, i routinely include somebody who is a life insurance broker, but the person that i use understands the role of life insurance in a broader plan to giving program, and there are people who cellphone ansel products who don’t recognize that, and they just think that the basis of your programme, as i said, should be the products that they sell. So you just want to be aware of self interest among some people who are offering to help your plan e-giving program? Do they have your plan e-giving program and your donors as their first interest? Or is there something else going on? Thanks so much for having me back, tony. My pleasure. As always, we’re talking about go off line. There are things it sze hard for me to believe that there are actually places that people can go for prospect research and they’re not on the web, is this actually a truth? It is it is absolutely so you know, i i was thinking about this because i do a lot of networking, and sometimes i will see non-profit executives attending, and it seems as though it’s definitely more than smaller to midsize non-profit so that would be your audience of listeners. Tony and i was thinking about how someone who might be an executive director or a development director who is looking to do some more prospect research, whether they’re doing reactive or pro active research, and we’ve talked about that in the past couple times where you may have certain people you’re looking to gain more information on or you’re looking to just get more individuals aware of the great mission of your non profit organization and therefore spread the message, and hopefully they get engaged and become donors. So i was thinking about some of those offline activities and thought we might concentrate on that for this particular segment. Yeah, sounds good, let’s see? So when they were talking about shops where there isn’t a devoted prospect researcher and maybe, you know, i think later on we may we may bring in those shops where there is a devoted prospect researcher, because there are things that they could be doing also that are not online, so we’ll get to that. But the board is for smaller shops, the board is a good place to start. Is that right? The board is a great place to start, so if they really understand how, how, just constantly keeping their antenna up, for example, when they’re out and about in the community, doing other community service or in their business world if they’re able to just i kind of know what to listen for in terms of engaging more people for your non-profit working okay on dh, what are we asking? Boardmember is to listen for what specifically what instructions should we be giving them? So i think it be great to give them instructions. First of all, they need to be very clear and understand everything that your own organization does, so that when they’re out engaging with people and they’re having a conversation and letting people know that they serve on a specific board on, and they should be very proud of that their ambassadors for your organization and then they engage in a conversation, you know, let’s say you they are a boardmember for a local why? And they happen to be talking about something, some aspect of the children’s programming, and if they happen to notice that that seems to really catch the attention of the person that they’re speaking with it’s definitely an opportunity to engage them further, invite them in for a tour. Uh, maybe invite them to an upcoming cultivation event or gala event or something like that indefinitely on opportunity, a door has been opened really for you to get more information and engaged that person further. My first guest today, julia bonem talked about for people changing jobs, having an aural pitch should should board members have something similar? You know, the elevator pitch, you know, that would probably be great, of course, when they’re out and about and networking there, they’re thinking about their own elevator pitch, but certainly they should have a very concise the description of what the organization does in such a way that it’s not going to bore the person to tears, that’s listening to them, but certainly will make the person se gi tell me more about that organization sounds fascinating. So, yeah, that’d be great, you know, speak. Speaking of other guests that you’ve had on your show, tony, you had someone on on april twentieth who was from morgan stanley, her name melanie dellaccio burghdoff schnoll begun begun, and she talked about something called radical list. Elearning and that really kind of piqued my interest because that’s, exactly what we’re talking about here is radical listening, so moving the donor or the prospective donor and really at some point that will help you to form a valuable proposal. So she talked about the aspect of putting on your listening ears. I’m putting some information out there and waiting for that reaction. So in terms of prospect research and you’re out and about in the community and doing your offline activities, as i call it it’s important to really put those listening ears on and and understand what the person is communicating to you and then all importantly, making sure that you go back and capture that information in some sort of a call report. Uh uh, maybe create a new donor record in your donorsearch off where a donor prospect and capture any important pieces. Of information you’ve gleaned from that conversation. Okay, we’re going to talk about the coal reports shortly thiss doesn’t stop with just the like the fund-raising or development committee that this should be the full board, i think no, i think it should be the full board. Certainly the fund-raising or development committee is most focused on fund-raising but really, the entire board has a fiduciary sponsor ability to the organization and the full board. They’re all ambassadors, and they are they are all every one of them ambassadors. So, you know, there are plenty of ways to get them up to speed on the fact that even though they may not be totally comfortable in being the person asking for money, there are certainly a lot of other points along the development, a cycle that they can be very helpful for they can host cultivation events, they can invite people to those events, they could certainly get involved in thanking people in stewarding people, and every one of those points along that development spectrum is an opportunity for the boardmember to engage people, to again be an ambassador for your organization and gathered valuable, valuable information that we probably will not find online. Yeah, i blogged about this at one point where saying that you’re your your best prospect research and of course i’m not a prospect researcher, but i believed that i still believe that you’re best prospect research comes from face-to-face meetings on, in fact, that was just happen to have it here it was called best prospect research comes from the prospect on dh that was blood that in july two thousand ten, right? I had an opportunity to review that because i wanted to make sure you want to make sure that i i covered, you know, any of the points that you brought across in that, and they were all excellent point, you know, i like the way you talk about really, you know, sitting down over some sort of a meal if it can’t be a complete meal, obviously, you know, you can meet for a cup of coffee or something like that, but there’s, really, you’re you’re right, tony there’s something about sitting down across the table from somebody and in a more relaxed atmosphere, as opposed to a planned meeting in an office or something, which then feels very much like a business meeting i like, i like that you’re you know, you’re sharing a physical space, you’re probably not sharing the food because you don’t know the person that well, but you’re sharing a physical space and there aren’t going to be interruptions by assistance and other people coming in or calling the office. Of course, people do have cell phones, but usually they’re polite enough to turn those off or at least not take the call when it comes through. The thing i like about meetings over a meal is everybody understands the flow, you know, we have a general idea when the server is going to come and bring water, and then when they’re goingto take the order and roughly when the food is going to come and, you know, this sort of there’s a flow that everybody understands, but when you’re in someone’s office, the flow is totally under their control, and i like a more neutral, uh, space that everybody understands the timing of right, and i think that people then will open up a little bit more, you know? They most people tend to live to talk about themselves and their family, so it’s definitely. An opportunity for you as putting on your prospect research had, if you will, to gather more information on those missing puzzle pieces that you perhaps did not readily have available in internet databases very often information about a spouse and about their children. Those are usually harder pieces of information to find on the internet unless there’s been really great biographical articles written on that person already, which is more a rarity than not know. So in a one hour meeting, you can learn a lot that could take you very much longer than that to find out on the web, and then you might not even find it right like that radical listening? Yeah, just, you know, and so they’re like i said there’s that point along the continuum of fund-raising cycle that doesn’t involve the actual ass. So gathering that information and and understanding what pieces you may have missing from your your prospect research report or your donor file is definitely important as well. Let’s go back to directly to the board there’s another way that they could be involved formally, which is, and i’ve talked about it on the show, having them screen lists of people like peer reviews, absolutely what? How does that take shape was that you would want to make sure, first of all, that everybody understands they’re coming to this meeting, this gathering and that, and that should be done really in a private office space, not in a public space. So you want to have that, as, you know, a focus meeting on doing a a peer review session or prospect review session, they’re coming. Ideally, you should be coming to the table with list of prospective donors that you’re hoping to gleam or information about these air prospects and maybe even just suspects and maybe even just suspects want to explain what a suspect is. People may not know the difference well, so that might be somebody who you’ve heard about in the community. They happen to be engaged with other non-profits do similar type of work to yours. Sametz you think that they may be wealthy, but you want to kind of have an idea before you start delving too far along into this, you know, prospect research process, so maybe they actually know them and can give you some additional information, right? But at this point a suspect, you know very little about you just have those beliefs that you described on dh opinions about what they might be interested in, right? Exactly. Okay, so so how does this peer review screening worked then of the other board? So ideally, if you couldn’t bring some names to the table for people to look at whatever you might already know, some very basic information about the individuals where they reside, where they work, um, and again, this is all very confidential, and i also recommend that anything that you do print out in these reports on dh circulate amongst the committee members stays in that room. It does not leave, so i’m very sensitive to trying to keep information all as confidential as possible don’t let people take take the list home with them or email it to people who can’t make the meeting shouldn’t do that. Well, if you have some sort of a secure, more secure email system, you know something that would allow you teo securely share the information? Yes, you could do it that way. The person can’t make the meeting, but the best feedback is really going to come when they have that. Interplay amongst each other and, you know, saying, oh, yeah, i’ve heard about that person and, you know, i happen to know a lot about their business or their very new to the community, and i know they have a wife and two young children, so it may spur on additional thoughts and conversations that simply won’t take place if you just female out a list and say, let me have your feedback on this, you know, um, let’s talk about family foundations for a minute because i find that when non-profits are really looking to expand, uh, their donor full and get proactive about getting more names in the pipeline, i usually tell them what focus on some family foundations in the community because these are people that have taken philanthropy to a new level, have gone the step of creating their own family foundation. So let’s, take a look at these families and see if they might be suitable prospects for us so you can use something as simple as guide star most non-profits will have access to their premium level service for free so you can actually do this type of research, come up with names of family foundation’s let’s, say, in twenty five or fifty mile radius of your zip code and then bring those names to the table, along with the trusty names affiliated with each foundation. So it’s an opportunity for you to walk into a development committee or a board meeting or a peer review session and say, my research has shown that we have one hundred and fifty family foundations in our nearby communities, that we serve here’s, a list of them here, the trustees. Does anybody have a connection to the foundation way have only about thirty seconds before a break, where will people find this guide? Welcome back, come with maria simple, the prospect finder, but let’s talk a little about the importance of call reports capturing this information that that we find in our face to face meetings or just everything is not a meeting, just a chance running into somebody. Yes, absolutely. So a call report would be something that we see ideal to have every executive director development director boardmember prepare after they’ve had it sit down meeting with someone or perhaps even a phone conversation with someone so it’s important to capture that information as quickly as possible after the conversation has taken place, there are going to be tidbits of information that you’re going to glean from that conversation about maybe some very citic aspect of your programming going back to the earlier example of the y why serves of such a wide variety of age for people right from instant and learning how to swim all the way up, tio senior citizens and programming for them. So it’s important to understand, perhaps what aspect of your programming? Maybe they really love the aspect of senior citizens getting in the pool, doing water aerobics or something like that, you know, so you can engage them further in conversation about programming for seniors, so it is important tio lather that information and capture it somewhere you’re going to forget the information. Our memories are very short and it’s important not only to gather the information for an immediate thie immediate near future of when you’re going to further cultivate and solicit that person, but also for the longevity of the organization, you know, in the fund-raising world in the nonprofit world, people move around a lot. So so what do we want to capture in these kottler force? What? What sections should there be? I think that you should be making sure you capture information again about specific programming they’re interested in general age groups. They’re interested in helping what? What are their? What are their hobbies and interests? So that might give you some idea of their level of well in terms of how they spend their free time and all the personal sort of biographical information we took with children’s children, families, what other boards do they serve on? That’ll give you so much information if you know what other boards they serve on, you’ll want to make note of that because again, where they’re serving on boards, they’re probably donating and you can sometimes find even at what levels they’re donating by tapping into specific databases or even going to the web site of that particular non-profit if they have an annual report in a pdf format on their website, you might be able to glean information about what level of e-giving they’re involved in with that particular non-profit so it’ll help you formulate and ask a little better when the time con when the time comes right and these things reports should probably probably be confidential in the office right now, but they should also be shared. They should be shared with the people that need to see the information. Okay, so first of all, the information should all be very factual. I always say to people, when you’re typing up any kind of prospect, profiles are putting information into your donor-centric self is more of an investigative reporter and state everything very factual, you know, date of divorce. If there’s been a divorce or something like that, you don’t need to say anything further about the divorce fight. What you might have heard that maybe in in public circles, you know, i’ve heard the standard that you shouldn’t put anything in a call report or really, in writing or e mails that you wouldn’t want that you’d be embarrassed if the person you’re writing about saw right, and in fact they have the right to walk into your non-profit at any time and asked to see their donor record that you do want to be very cognizant to that at all times and write your report with that i wear go ahead, we have just a couple minutes before break. Go ahead. Yeah, so yeah, just to make sure that the information that you wouldn’t be able to find elsewhere online can perhaps be gathered from any conversations you have let’s talk about, ah, hosting cultivation events for four suspects now that we’ve identified what a suspect is, and for prospects, this is another good wayto meet people and it’s it’s, not the one on one lunch, which could be a little off putting to some people, right? So cultivation events are great and there you will definitely want to have your radical listening ears on prices. So you wanna have if you have an opportunity to make sure that you engage all of your board members to have the same radical listening ears on who are attending this event that yeah, it’s a great opportunity in very often they’re held in someone’s home and so again, it’s a more relaxed atmosphere, you have an opportunity to present a sum information about your non-profit and their importantly, there’s no ask made at that event it is purely for cultivation purposes only. And if you state that the event is going to be an hour long, keep it to an hour long. You know, people’s time is very valuable, so it’s an opportunity to to fill in the blank, some missing pieces that you might have on people. Or maybe it’s the first time you’re getting any information, perhaps you’ve not done any prospect research on them at all, and meeting them at this cult patient event really kind of raises your antenna a bit to say, wow, this is someone we need to engage further and learn a lot more about you could use your board to invite people to the to the to the meeting that to the event that they might know people that they may know yeah, absolutely, absolutely. And that and that is a great way to engage your board. Okay, so you’re not asking them to ask for money. Just bring some people to the table, right? Maria, we have to leave it there. I was just on her show between ten and and noon her show is shocking blue on w b a i which you’ll find at wgbh dot or ge and we were talking about fund-raising and we got her ah, good gift, good pledge thousand dollar pledge while we were on so my thanks to delphine for having me on her show, i hope you were with me on my show last week because i’d be deeply hurt if i found out that you had missed budget building basics and what to do when the donor dies. Budget building basics was with paul connick stein of mission first finance, and he had five steps to construct a budget your critical financial and program planning tool we also talked about how to use your budget throughout the year and what to do when the donor dies. That was aviva schiff, aviva benwikere. The legal notice is staring at you, telling you that a planned e-giving donor has died. Now what? My guest now is susan gordon she’s, the director of non-profit services at causes dot com causes has over one hundred seventy five million users, twenty thousand non-profit partners and thousands of active collective action campaigns. She’s worked as a political organizer, communications specialist for women’s non-profit in cambodia and leader of a rural youth organization in new hampshire on twitter, she’s at susan gordo geo audio at susan gordo and i’m very pleased that causes dot com and her work there brings susan gordon to the show welcome, susan. Thank you so much, tony. Great thanks for having me on. Oh, it’s, my pleasure to have you i’m glad you’re with me. Um, tell us generally about causes dot com for people who don’t know absolutely so causes dot com is a platform where individuals and activists and organizers and non-profits of all budgets and sizes and issues can come to have the best online tools to run action campaigns. So we’ve been around for about five years now as a facebook application, but we’ve actually built out our own platform that lets individuals come on to our site create action campaigns, whether their petitions or pledges or video campaigns, or all of them, uh and get people involved through facebook through twitter and increased their supporter base and get more people taking action. And this is for not only organized charities, but also individuals, right? You said activists, absolutely yep, anybody can come on our site and create an action campaign, so we’ve had some of our best campaigns come from engage non-profit supporters non-profit employees and people who aren’t involved with organizations at all and just have a passion to see change in the world. They’re all about engagement, and we’ll be talking about that. What? What are what are action campaigns when you say that? What do you mean? So basically we wanted to create a way not just to have a community online, you know, we’ve been working on that for a long time. We’ve had over one hundred seventy five million people joined cause communities, but what are really benefit is for organizations and for organizer’s is to be able to get these people on line to take action, so we wanted teo, you know, we realised that to create riel change. In the world, we need to engage people on a different level and get people taking actions that you create a ladder of engagement. So maybe it’s a really easy online quiz at first, but you take a quiz, you watch a video, then you sign a pledge, and then maybe you move up to something like a petition or a fundraising campaign. But we realised that you really need to have that whole ladder of engagement for teo, bring people in where they are and then move them up to more impactful actions. So on causes, we have nine different campaign types, so you can just come on our site, create a cause and what you have the ability to do is post different types of action. So, as i mentioned, we have pledges so a pledge not to text and drive or a pledge to stop smoking. They’re our petition. So whether it’s ah, you know, local business or you know the government, you can create a really easy online petition and sway decision makers. That way there are storytelling campaigns where you can ask people to upload photos and videos around a certain topic. There are polls. Quizzes, video and photo campaigns where you could just engage people through, you know how many, you know, simple statistic like, you know, what’s, the most common type of debris found on our beaches today? Teo, you know, polls what? You know what? What campaign should we focus on for the next year and gather you no feedback from your supporter based so there’s all these different campaign types, but it makes it really easy to create a different types of online action campaigns around whatever campaign you’re trying to run, and these can be very cleverly used to also inform as well as to gather information. I saw one that said what? I don’t remember what the cause was, but what bothers you most, and there were some things about there were some stats about vehicles that i think four out of five parents don’t use car seats correctly or on there was something else about maybe texting and driving. And so it’s it’s a poll that sounds like a simple pole to mae could be used as information as well a as education as well as gathering information back exactly, and we found for particularly for a lot. Of small non-profits you know, they set up a facebook page or a twitter handle, and we’re you know, they reached a certain point, a kind of plateau of how many people had, you know, just sort of find up to receive messages from their organization, and they’re really looking for a different way of of engaging people and it’s not just about, you know, sign up for my facebook page, it’s really, about how do i get more people to come together around the issue that i’m working on? So maybe they’ll get connected to your organization through a simple pole or a quiz about the issue that you’re working on, so it really helps kind of break out of that just sign up for us to sign up for us and really allows non-profits, too, build a community and build support around the issues that they’re working on, and then whether it’s a fundraising campaign or it’s a petition, you know, signature drive, you’ve got you brought a whole new audience people in through the work that you’re doing, and we found that it’s a lot easier for a lot of small organizations to find new people that they may not have been connected to before, but that are really interested in the issue that they’re working on you mentioned earlier the latter of engagement, which is essentially what you’re what you’re describing, wei have just about two minutes before our before ah break what you say little about storytelling as an action campaign. What do people do around that? Yeah, so great example is actually if you go to causes dot com slash bully stories it’s just an example of how one organization is using this this feature, but basically we built a really easy technical way for you just to create you say post in action share stories, and you ask your members teo, to share stories, and they can upload videos and photos and stories on a topic that you asked them tio and so for this example on the bully project, movie was looking for a way to get people to share their own stories, that they were putting a lot about a lot of content, but they wanted their supporters and sort of people interested in the movie teo upload their stories of how they’ve been bullied or their messages of support for people who had been both and i can tell my makes it, you know, they just send him to cause the dot com crash bully stories, and we make it really easy for people to record videos on their computers or to upload photos or just type in a story. So that’s, one way that it’s being used is it was sort of motivated by this ninety nine percent tumbler blawg where you had people holding up signs that say, you know, i stand with the ninety nine percent, so it makes that type of campaign really easy, but also we were really interesting campaigns that conf fit right with whatever you’re non-profit is doing so let’s say, you’re doing a campaign to get more people to go into the national parks with kids. Well, you could create a storytelling campaign that just says, you know, upload a photo of yourself in the park and will, you know, give a prize toe one random person that uploads their photo so it can be sort of a way to either, uh, see evidence of people taking action or doing a really simple, you know, hold up a sign and support campaign. Or it can be a real storytelling campaign. So whether it’s police think, how is this hospital affected your life? Or tell us about your experiences with the disease or tell us, you know, give us your message about why you want to stop big oil, whatever it is that makes this storytelling sort of gathering content from supporters is an user generated content really easy. I’m talking with susan gordon at of causes dot com, and we’re sharing this resource with you so that you can become acquainted with it and start your own action campaign or campaigns on causes dot com susan, i saw one organization, lgbtq rights, as about twenty, five hundred campaigns. Yes, we have a wide a very, very wide audience of those organizations and organizer’s that are using our tools so you can create as many action campaigns as you want. And so it’s really exciting for aa lot of orga ruminations who have been either building intense, really expensive micro sites or paying developers to come up with a lot of really unique, different types of functionality into their web site to be able to just have a free resource that comes on and you can create these beautiful online pages that are incredibly engaging and then pushed them out through facebook through twitter, through your email list, wherever your supporters are it really we’ve got a lot of organizations that have been creating a lot of different campaigns and and frequently creating lots of different types of actions that plug into all their different campaigns, so let’s talk about how a charity gets started. I know that one of your precepts is that this be simple to use, you don’t have to be technically savvy in order to in order to set up at causes dot com, how does the charity get started? Absolutely so you just go to causes dot com on when you go to that site, you’ll be able to see some some examples of of other campaigns that people are running just to give you an idea of what these things look like and how it works. But you just go to causes that common at the top, uh, you’ll see a button that says start a cause, so if you don’t have a cause already, it takes about two seconds to create, and it basically just gives a sort of campaign hub or a kind of community page that you can post all these actions. Teo so once you started cause, you’ll see a big button at the middle of the page that says post in action, and when you click that it will give you all of our different action tights. And so those are the nine those the nine different types of activities exactly. So you just click post in action, then you’ve got your options for pledges, petitions, video campaigns, etcetera on dh soon you’ll also be ableto at the top. Just either start a cause or just post in action directly, so if you don’t want a community page, you don’t want multiple actions. You just want to start a petition. You’ll also be able to do that too. Okay? And associated with your action campaign there’s a way of people finding mohr information about your work. How does that work? How do you send people elsewhere? That’s a great, great question. So on the page itself so let’s say you have a pledge or you have a quiz. And through taking the quiz you don’t just want people to know about, you know, the you know, whats that statistic about, you know, child safety you really would like them to tow. Connect with other resource is in a part of the bigger campaign. Well, there are a couple ways to do that. One is to include more information. Write on that page itself so on, sort of the information or more info section of the quiz. But the other thing that cause allows you to do is post an update. Everyone who’s taken an action so let’s say you get two thousand people to take this action about child safety. Fantastic. There will be a big button on that action that says posting updates and it allows you to actually email to people’s personal email addresses on update to the action so you can post one, you know, week after they take it that says, you know, thanks so much for taking our quiz about child safety. Now will you sign our petition to lobby the government to make new laws about this topic and so you can plug your next action or tell them how else they can get involved? Whether it’s volunteering or attending an event just connecting with you in different ways, you can post an update to everybody who take that action, send him an email and say, give him an update on how that’s going, but also howto how to take other actions with your organization. And this is all done through the site, right? Exactly. Yes, we built out a whole e mail system, so it makes it really easy. Okay, so somebody does not have to be an email programmer or an html programmer to have this these very robust tools, right? This is this is very simple, absolutely up. You’ll see on every action page a button that says post an update, you just type it in and we’ll email it to everybody. Who’s taken that action for you. Okay, okay, you also have integration with twitter and facebook. What did you say little about those? Yes, well, our facebook integration is actually what made causes works so well. I mean, we have individuals who, you know, are college students that create campaigns. One of our favorite examples is a is a medical student named eric ding who was really passionate about cancer prevention and was getting some of the deaths, cancer research, access to this incredible research by being at med school, but he wanted to share that with a larger audience, and so he wanted to gather people together and then to be able to send them this great information about cancer research. So, again, not your sexiest topic it’s something that in the past, a lot of research organizations and hospitals have struggled with how to use social media, but eric just came onto our site, created a cause, called the campaign for cancer prevention and went out and tried to tell all of his friends about it, and he posted them, posted it on flyers and break rooms, and he told his friends, and he e mailed his aunts and uncles, and he called his parents and said, you know, join, join this online community, and we’re going toe i’m gonna send you some really great information about cancer prevention, and through our the facebook integration on causes is really how his movement grew. So he recruited three hundred seventy two people to join the cause, and they recruited their friends and they recruited their friends and they recruited their friends, and eric now has six point one million people in his car that’s incredible that’s another thing i don’t really he got three hundred seventy five directly and then over six million through through those exactly that’s incredible, the way that that works is that we have plugged in ah, an incredibly deep facebook integration with all of these actions. So basically, whenever you sign a petition or you take a pledge or you take one of these quizzes, it’s automatically getting sent to your news feed. So when your friends signed onto facebook, they see, oh, susan just took a quiz about child safety laws. Ah, and they can see and take the quiz as well. So that type of integration has been incredibly important to getting more people to take the action that you posed thie other part of that is that we actually give you a list of all your facebook friends and say, now that you took this quiz, which of your other friends do you think would want to take the quiz to? And so you can just click and, you know, pick any of your friends on facebook and when you click, okay, you can type a message, and that invitation appears right on their facebook profile, so they find into facebook they get a buzz on their smartphone there’s a ton of ways that they’re going to go back to their facebook profile. See, oh, tony, you know, just sent me this quiz. I wonder what it is and then find out about it as well. Now i have to tell you on tony martignetti non-profit radio we have a full disclosure policy. Are you being personally enriched by the facebook initial public offering today? No, i’m not your not your, not your not okay, so it doesn’t matter to you what the share price of what the facebook share price closes that today exactly causes a completely separate company from facebook, so has nothing to do with it, and we’re actually just building on the place the facebook platform okay? And you personally or not being enriched, i am not ok, ok, good. Alright, so say more about facebook and twitter integration, please. Yeah, so so basically this way, the two sort of sites of facebook integration, which is one when you take the actions it’s being posted to your facebook news feed and then the second is that you can send the invitations right to your friends through facebook and it appears on their facebook provoc girl, these two types of integration have been the way that these these actions have been spreading, so the reason that eric was able to get six point one million people to join his cause was that, uh, was through these sort of friends telling friends, telling friends and we at causes have made that incredibly easy. And so for a lot of organizations, the exciting part is that as you get your supporters to take one of these actions, you know, you’ll be, you know, start telling your usual people about this. So whether it’s sending an email to your email lists are posting it to your facebook page or twitter what’s exciting is that when your supporters take this action, they are automatically going to be spreading it to their friends and their networks, and so we’re seeing about a thirty two, fifty percent pick up on different campaigns. You’re going to get fifty percent more people way actually just had a campaign that ran on causes that got forty seven percent of the people who came in through ah, take their campaign kayman just threw this facebook and agree. Agent susan gordon is the director of non-profit services at causes dot com and that’s, the site we’re talking about how robust, rich, easy, simple and this is all free, right? There’s, no charge to charities or individual activists. Exactly there’s absolutely no charge. You can create as many of these campaigns as you like, and all of these tools, they’re free, okay, let’s say a little bit about fund-raising campaigns, that’s one of your nine action action possibilities what what? What can be done around fund-raising specifically, of course, i want listeners to understand the latter of engagement that susan talked about his ultimately, the hope is that this will lead to fund-raising but there’s a lot of richness to be gained and shared before you get too fund-raising but but, susan, what if somebody wants tohave specifically, a fundraising campaign on causes dot com absolutely fund-raising is an incredibly important part of what we what we do on causes, and we’ve spent a lot of resources over the past couple years trying to plug these types of campaigns on make him work for fund-raising so when someone donates on causes, how do their friends see it? How did they ask their friends to donate as well? And how did they we create a rich sort of social experience around donating to ah, to a non-profit so they’re there to ways that we’ve done that. The first one is that a fundraising campaign is one of our non nine action types, so as i was saying you can, you know, post a quiz and then post a pledge and then post a fund-raising project, and so we created a really beautiful online page where you can add media, so photos and videos about what you’re raising money for. You can add donorsearch choices that say, you know, twenty five dollars, will send a kid to school for two months, you can sort of create a really great story around what it is that you’re funding. You could also absolutely raise money for unrestricted funds, which is, you know, just put up, please donate to our non-profit and add photos and videos of what you d’oh so they could be restricted funds or not, unrestricted funds it’s completely up to you, but you can tell a story about what they’re what you’re raising money for and put it up right on your cause with these different types of action campaigns, and you can create a campaign where you can, where the fund-raising element of it is that sort of where you’re leading to the whole time and, you know, it creates a great online page for you to send people to donate when they donate we’ve got a bunch of really neat things you can upload a thank you video. We send them a thank you note right away. We use network for good to process our donations and so they’ll get a tax receipt right away. There’s a four point, five percent processing see from network for good causes doesn’t take anything on top of that, but basically network for goodwill. Then send your organization a checker and electronic funds transfer once a month. And so it’s. Totally seamless. You’ll just get that check once a month with all of the donations that come in through causes. Okay, okay. We don’t have only two minutes left before we have to. We have to wrap up. I saw. Donate your birthday on the site. What is that? Yes. So if you go toe wishes, dot causes dot com that is are what we call wishes which our personal fund-raising pages. So, uh, if you as an organization are looking for ways and easy way to ask your supporters toe, give them an online tool that they can fundraise for you. Causes is an incredibly powerful tool to use for that. We’ve had people, you know, regular. People just supporters of a non-profit raise, you know, many thousands of dollars for organizations so they can first they pick an event, so if it’s their birthday, if they’re doing a run or a walk, if they’re getting married, if they’re doing ah ah memorial for someone or just any reason they can create a personal fund-raising page, they can tell their friends and family or even upload a video explaining why they’re raising money for this organization and then individuals can donate and we’ve plugged in a bunch of facebook and twitter integrations and so that they can then tell their friends, hey, my friends raising money for this cause it’s really great on and help you do your fund-raising there’s also meet little features like cards where when someone donates, they can make you a card on right on that page tell you, good job for raising money. You’re happy birthday right on that page on, and it basically makes it a really easy way for your supporters to gather donations for your organization and so you can send anyone toe wishes dot causes dot com they just create that page, select your non-profit is what they’re raising money for and then they’ve got this great parents to send people to to fundrasing, the site is, causes dot com. I do a lot of speaking and training i come into and news stories when i’m asked by journalists. So why do i do all this? Because the things that the thing that work that pays my bills is consulting, which i didn’t mention. I do that too, but all this other content that i produced, why do i do it? That’s? Because there are two things that i believe very strongly on dh that is, first, that small and midsize charity’s need to be better that aaron a lot of things measuring impact and outcomes and delivering programs buy-in fund-raising, of course, um, in their human resource is work and the marketing, communications, et cetera. And so i i believe that there’s a need to be much better in all those areas. Ah, and others. And second that charity’s deserve help to be better. I know that you’re working incredibly hard and maybe understaffed, maybe under budgeted, underfunded. So i think you deserve the help that you need to be better and those two things together or what? Dr me too produce the content that i do. That is what i believe and that’s. What motivates me? I wish with me now is dr gen shang. Hello, jan, how are you? Good, how are you? I’m very well. Jen is an assistant professor at the centre on philanthropy at indiana university. She is a philanthropic psychologist. She’s been published in many journals, including experimental economics, economic journal, journal of marketing research and marketing science. Homework has also been covered in the new york times and the chronicle. Of philanthropy, and she is the author of the book fund-raising principles and practice, which is available at amazon dot com, and i’m very pleased that her research in her work brings to the show welcome, jim. Thank you. We’re talking about five words to better fund-raising what was the research that we’re talking about? Uh, it’s, uh, when we study how prime ing people’s idea of more identity come potentially influence, how they give on day when we say more identity, really, what we mend is how carrying kind, compassionate, helpful and friendly people think they are, okay? They’re us interesting. Their moral identity. Yeah. Okay. That’s the that’s. The research will let, uh, what was specifically how did you conduct the research? So this is when during public radio stations on air front drive. I’m sure your listeners are quite familiar with this form of fund-raising this was bloomington bloomington public radio in indiana, right? Yeah, yeah. That steering our billings in radio on their front driving ah, november, where they’re deejays kind of inter interrupt the programming and say things like, you know, here is that i remember and if you could give us this amount and here’s the thank you gifts so people call in and then half of the people who call in they are asked, you know, how are you a newer renew a member of the station? And then they’re thanked for either becoming or being a member of the station and the other half of the donors when they call in there asked exactly the same question, but when there are thanked there think for being kind and carrying member of the station were becoming a helpful and friendly member of the station. Schnoll okay, so what we found is that when people are think with those moral adjective, then they increase their giving, but this is only significant with female, but not mayo donors. Okay, let’s, let’s, be very clear. What are the five words that you used in your research is caring, compassionate, kind, friendly and helpful. Okay, that actually reminds me of the used to be a boy scout. I still have an eagle scout kayman eagle scout. This reminds me of if i didn’t mention i’m an eagle scout thiss reminds me of the scout law you didn’t know the boy scout law, probably unless you have boys. Trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean and reverent. So you’ve got you’ve got two or three of those in there? Yeah. Did you? Did you derive your your moral adjectives from the boy scout oath? I scott law. No law, not the oath. That’s, this is the law. Pardon me. This? Sure. Some off of the participants that participated in the orange inal study where these adjectives war generated they were members of the boy kapin. Okay, well, there could be some overlap, but we don’t know if that’s cause and effect that’s just that could just be coincidental. There were hundreds of people who were asked to list all possible adjectives they can possibly use to describe any moral person. And then we could. And the researchers off that really orange? No study collected the most often used adjectives by most people. Okay, i see. Those are the adjective that’s. How you came up with your caring, compassionate, friendly kind and helpful. You okay? Let’s. See, the the research is on ly, but only impacts females. Not so men are not influenced by the moral adjectives. Not the set that we not these five. Hopefully, they’re influenced by the scout law if their boy scouts, because otherwise it’s just don’t be a scout if you’re not going. Teo, reverent and helpful and courteous and kind and cheerful. Cheerful. So, um, but women are the majority of donors, isn’t that right? Yes. Two thirds ofthe most non-profit donors are female donors. Okay, so so using your research, we can impact two thirds of the giving population. Yeah, okay, so these people were thanked using one of the moral adjectives, but they hadn’t, but they hadn’t made their gift yet. So what were they thanked for? They were thanks for calling. Uh, as soon as they were called in. As soon as they call in there. Asked whether they want to be a new member ization or their existing member nation and there, thanks for either becoming a new member or being a member. Okay, so you thank for either being becoming or being a member or you thank for being or becoming a caring, compassionate, etcetera number. Ok, yeah. So do we know whether this applies to written solicitations? Well, we’re we’re currently testing different forms of recon communication and what we do there is you know, you mean one of the key things if people were to apply this technique is not the fact that, you know, they need to write down this five wars, but they need to engage people in thinking about these words. And i think one of the main reasons why our research turned out in the way that it did is because people were asked to answer a question first and that they’re thinking in response to what they think they are already. So when we apply these techniques in return context, what we had to ask people to do is not just to have kind carrying floating everywhere in the letter, but instead only on the renewal forms we want people to say i and then people find their name like gen shang, i wanted to give this much right. And then when i signed my gen shang am finding on those words you’re signing on those words what do you mean? Like they’re the words are below the below the line where you put your name? The words are actually in the in the box, in the background of that box where i started my name. Oh so there’s sort of shaded in the background exact, like a like a watermark. That’s, right? Ok, but this is research. You’re just testing this. You don’t have results from from this written written test yet. Well, actually, we we dio look at me. I’m way behind. Okay, but the result is that, you know, people see exactly the same thing. And half of the people are asked to print their name, almost words. And the other half, i asked to sign their name on those words, and we found a marginally statistically significant results. Where if people signed their name, they give more than if they printed their name on those words. Very interesting. But did you also did you also test that against there? Not being any words. Yes, it’s hyre than not having anymore. Okay, definitely. Just making that clear. Okay. Yeah. Okay, yeah, but but what’s important there is that when people sign their names, they’re more active in thinking about their identity, who they are. But when they simply print, they don’t think about being both kind and caring compassion. People asked much as if they signed that almost stamp their own it and the answer those words very interesting. That is very interesting. So so what’s really driving the effect we think at this point, it’s not necessarily that non-profit professionals know about those words, but they have to think of ways to tap into people’s sense of who they are and then leads those central sons of who they are into those morally, you know, promoted kind of product. What kind of increase in fund-raising did you see in your research? Well, in the first study, it was a ten percent increase in female donor, um and that’s average, you have to say about eighty seven dollars, in the control group where people are simply think and is about one hundred when people are thanked with moral awards and in this direct meaning that we just had it tested it’s about, like a five percent increase, they’re the average e-giving is much smaller because his christmas appeal so the average amount is like thirteen pounds and, um, you know, eighteen dollars, but then the the fact is about fifty upleaf about twenty dollars, okay? And also with women in the only only only an increase for women in the in the writing or that does that apply to men also in the written form that that that that’s okay, so men are not immoral? No, no, at least not in a written sense. Yeah, by no means that i think i’m just extrapolated i’m just taking a natural sametz seems like a natural conclusion for your research is that men in conversation are immoral. Well, not that that wouldn’t be how i know i know what i hope not know you’re. There is a more different it’s, a very different sense of saying something versus we were just not successful in bringing their own sense of morality to the front. So diplomats make a decision such a diplomatic, academic that’s beautiful, but really mentally moral no, of course, that’s an irrational conclusion. I really i think it is our failure on our part. So what we actually would like to test in the future is tap into moral values that male might be more likely to engage in, like, responsible, loyal, strong take leadership pride. Yeah, i think you’re i think you’re wasting your time with those just bein sports and cars i think is and booze, i think that’s where you really should be starting, you know, have a little budweiser icon that people sign and watermark, that people sign over that will that’s going to get that anheuser busch logo. You know those of this where you want to be, corvettes, you know, sign your name over this watermark of a corvette that will, i think, that’s, where you’re going to see market market change in mark changing giving, we need to take a break right now. Jenn, you are a philanthropic psychologist. What is that? Yeah, well, it’s, i’m interested in studying why people do philanthropy and what, uh, doing a philosophy might do to their own life. You know what it might do to their own, like how it makes them feel how it makes them feel. How does that help them discover who they are defined their meaning in life? Okay. And it’s, not a field i’m acquainted with so hominy philanthropic psychologists are there. Well, i only know one of me, but i’m sure they’re so yeah, you had some of these. Have you had some campaign to systematically eliminate all the other philanthropic psychologists? Well, actually, i haven’t done so because i would rather their mohr. Okay, you’re not the violent academic at that. Maybe you were the the one percent violence academic, but that’s, not you. No, i was just you know, i was the first graduate of philanthropic phd from the canal philanthropy. In that sense, it’s, because the field didn’t exist aren’t annoying. Okay, out of the five people that we graduated already from that program, i was the only one who had a psychology background. Okay, yeah. There’s running through your research and you’ve mentioned it just obliquely a few times. I want to spend a little time on it is feeling better, feeling better about giving and and reinforcing one’s beliefs about themselves. So say, say so let’s talk about that. Yeah. So, for example, in this somewhere, i didn’t e-giving research what we did after we did. The experiment on the air is we send donorsearch survey and we asked them on the scale one tonight. How? Carrying. Actually, you think you are and then people silk road number like seven. And then we ask them, i’m on a scale of one tonight. How ideally would you like to become caring? And then people probably circle my i really, really want to become really, really caring. And then what we did is we calculate the difference between the two each we call more identities discrepancy. And then we link this number. Teo the same person’s contribution history to the same radio station. And what we found is that the more females give the smaller. This gap is between their actual and their ideal morally identity. But this relationship does not. Exist for males. So what this means is that the act of giving itself actually can potentially help female donors to rich. They’re more ideals and that’s. Great. Yes. To teo, get closer to what they believe of themselves already. Right? Exactly. Okay. Yeah. Yeah. Um, again, men out. Liars. You know, they don’t care how they feel. They don’t. They don’t have feelings. I don’t know what they’re thinking. They don’t know what they’re not giving that it’s. Unbelievable. What? What a disappointing gender. Well, what they’re thinking, what they’re giving couldn’t really be measured with the set for measurements we have. So i think the next step in my research is trying to find ways where we can find what men are thinking. Right? Well, there’s the cars and sports and booze that you know it’s. Okay, um, let’s. See? So this is academic research that can be immediately applied. And tha the telemarketing part, right? I mean, so is there any reason to think that if if the organization is calling out that there would be any different result? Uh, no, actually, we way are currently conducting any marketing way. I don’t have the results yet. Okay? But because we don’t think there’s any reason why it wouldn’t work so you could be calling out and thanking someone for thank someone for having been a a friendly or kind or helpful donorsearch in the past. And would you consider giving this year? Is that does that? Does that sound right to you? Yeah. Yeah, but what they need to do is they make sure that thing is somehow linked two people’s sense of their donation or they’re being a donor. And that, i think, needs to be set right before they asked people to give again. Oh, right before. Okay. All right. Before you right at the beginning of the park. Or, you know, without knowing anything about the donor without asking them to at least answer one question to engage. Ok. Ok. So a little engagement, but then right before the ask this this thanking right? Using one of the five moral adjectives two out of using two. Okay. Oh, excellent. All right, so you have to use two of the five? Yeah. We never tested just one because we be virality is a complicated constructs he need, you know, multiple kind of ways to get to it, excellent.
