He’s, the chief product officer for billhighway and he leads the product and technical development of that financial technology platform. He’s a c p a. Aaron was previously a management consultant for deloitte consulting. Where’s clients included american express, bear stearns and borgwarner and i’m very pleased to have his expertise on the show. Aaron schmid welcome. Good morning. Thanks, tony. What’s wrong in accounting in small and midsize charities, you know, there there’s quite a bit of a few come to mind, you know immediately. And you know, one is just the lack of standardization across organisations and it really doesn’t matter if if your organization consists of one entity o r one hundred fifty different ways of doing the same thing. It’s just really not a healthy way to run a business, and it caused several problems related to, you know, operational inefficiencies. It could be very hard to educate and enforce again when you have fifty different ways of doing things, and it becomes even harder to get any type of consistent or meaningful reporting. So, organizations, you really need to focus on creating consistency. You know, both with prophecies and tools. You need one financial system of record one process to find. Oh, and that’s going to increase the level of visibility and accountability across the organization. Okay, these processes were talking about this is all around your money, money coming in money coming out. Absolutely no money coming in and out specifically around reporting, you know, i see. Ah, latto inconsistency. You know, just recently, way had a simple example where volunteers were running. Ah, client organization of ours. And those volunteers were were using different versions of the organization chart of account. And when you looked at it, i’m sorry. Different versions of the organization’s what chart of accounts? Chart of accounts. Okay, but it’s really what? What? To find your financial statements. It was really obvious when you look across the reports that were produced in the organization that the counter being misused and they were being duplicated and again, it was just really, really made it difficult to accurately report from a budget standpoint and then tracking actually to that. And we really just went in and did a very simple review of that chart of accounts and ended up finding one version of the truth. I did a little education, you know, on the volunteers, you know how to use that and just that simple change. You really just changed the meaningfulness of the reported that the report there were being generated. Tony martignetti non-profit radio has drug in jail. You you’re really been talking for less than two minutes, you’re already skirting very close. Of course, i’m the warden of jargon jail, so the probation early probation is a possibility a chart of accounts is that something that every charity is supposed to have? What, first of all, what are these accounts? What is on this chart? Absolutely every organization non-profit for-profit goingto have a chart of accounts and it’s really a very simple concept, nothing more than a list of reporting buckets of how you’re going to track your information, you know, over the course of the year, and that information is going to allow you to make better, better business decisions and really, in the end, that’s all a financial statement is kind of a running total to find on that list of reporting bucket that you’ve defined is meaningful to your organization again to be able teo, accumulate that information at the end of the year and make again better business. What are some examples of these reporting buckets that we on this chart of reports that sort of accounts, revenues and expensive? So you would think of you your piano again? However, your cash is coming into your organization, you’re gonna break that down to whatever’s meaningful. So you know, one example would be to break down reports they don product lines. You know, if you know that one hundred thousand dollars came in over the course of the year that’s important, but if you know that that hundred thousand dollars was ninety thousand dollars came from product number one and ten thousand came from product number two, that lower level granularity again is good, it is meaningful and it’s going to allow you to make decisions based on it, as opposed to just having that one lump sum amount of one hundred thousand dollars. So defining those reporting buckets, that chart of accounts is critical to understanding the health of your organization, okay, those are examples of revenues that may be coming in. So one might be fund-raising and one might be fees for services, and maybe one is you have a little thrift shop or something like that or a little sale of product or something. What are some examples? Okay, what are some examples of money going out these reporting buckets? That would be in this chart of accounts, you need to think of your expense structure and how your money is flowing out of the organization. So, again, whatever it is meaningful to you could be a simple, as, you know, the rent in the space that that that you’re releasing it could be a symbol of the utilities or again, anything that makes sense to your organization, and we need to be accounting for these items all separately. This is the point, right? That’s the point exactly that that lower level of granularity is so critical and you got it achieve a balance because there’s effort into creating that, you know, amount of detail and you don’t want to get excessive where it’s taking too much time to, you know, separate all those things out, but you definitely want to spend enough time, tio, where you’re getting enough meaningful. Information tio r mu to be able to make make those good business decisions. All right? And now, in just a minute, we have left before a break. What is the the value of tracking these this’s this flow of money in and out in the same way each time for small and midsize charities that that probably don’t even have a cfo? Yeah, that that consistent is so critical because without it, you know, it’s really hard to enforce accountability across the organization, because if things are track inconsistently, you just you don’t know what’s going on and if you don’t know what’s going on again, it’s hard to hold people accountable throughout your organization latto finding that that one version of truth and then using it in a very assistant manner is going to be critical free to be able to execute you’re on your wayto financial health. I’m thinking of a small organization that may get one hundred, checks a year or so or something like that, and maybe different people are accounting for those checks each time they come in, not out and about a hundred different people, but maybe two or three different people are doing it two or three different ways. That’s, your point right, that’s, my point, that’s all it takes again that you don’t need to be a thousand entity organization like you mentioned one. Any organization with no more than two people can do things in consistently, and that can create all kinds of wasted time, time and energy where you can get that consistent, whether you’re two people or one hundred again, what’s coming out on the back end in the financial statements are gonna be so much more meaningful. Our report is going to be more specific when we know that we’re having consistent processes each time check comes in or some money goes out. But what we’re going to do with these now maur clear reports. Well, now we can use them, right? And before, when things are not consistent. You spent so much time in the accident knows of finance that it’s very hard to work in any proactive manner, and now that you have this consistency, you can start using it to become better and use financial statements, you know, again for what they’re there for teo again, increase the financial health of your organization aboard would certainly be interested in clearer, more precise reporting, right? Your your board, your finance committee or the office or the school board and it’s a huge problem right now and a lot of organization. That’s one of the core purpose is generating these financial statements for the different types of groups, and you can lose sight of and why you exist is an organization and again that’s for your constituents and that’s for your mission and you don’t exist is an organization. Teo, keep up and keep your head above water from a finance back-up okay, so we can automate thes tasks. Is that right? That’s that’s a key part of this key part of it? I mean, key part of it really centers around, you know, trying to work smarter and not harder on dh a great way to to work smarter, not harder, harder is to use technology as in the neighbor enabler and, you know, you want to reduce manual task, you want to get rid of duplicates. Dafs and as i just mentioned, you want try to free up resources from those accident o’s of financial management every day and get back to focusing on your constituent, thinking about recruitment, thinking about retention and obviously, you know, ultimately your mission, yeah, i think the you call him the x’s and o’s mean thiss numerical accounting and and just everything around the numbers is pretty daunting to a lot of small and midsize shops. They’re not really sure how to do it. They’re passionate about their work, obviously, because they wouldn’t be there, but then the business side, the financial management side is kind of, you know, burdensome and scary. Absolutely. All right, organizations really get caught up a lot. Just how things have always been done. And regardless of how painful it is, you can get caught keeping your head down and not not thinking about taking a step back and thinking, you know, how can we do this better? How can we do this? Smarter on dh that’s where, you know, technology could come in to get rid of a lot of that waste of time and energy and get you back focused on what makes? All right, we’ve talked on this show a few times about software as a service which is synonymous with cloud computing. That’s where a lot of the help exists right in the cloud? Absolutely, absolutely. And they make a lot of sense, you know, in today’s, day and age, especially for smaller groups. The leverage of the cloud. You know, in my opinion, it’s just it’s very difficult today to be good at everything and technology. It’s just it’s changing at an ever increasing pace and, you know, to be great at it, you need to focus on it. And you need to focus really exclusively on it? Um, not not profit organizations, they’re not technology companies again. They exist for their missions for their purpose. Um, and again, in my opinion, you think you need to let the experts focused on technology. Um, security security of your constituent data, it’s just it’s, paramount, and you really need to make sure that you do your homework and select a provider that understands that on that protects that again so you can leverage the power of the club duitz you talk about the pace of change, of technology and how hard it is for for people to keep up, so if they’re using a cloud computing solution, then they don’t have to keep up right? The company that manages that software, they’re the ones who are upgrading their product all the time, exactly and that’s, the real benefit is you have companies that are focused exclusively on it, that they do it very well, you know, they’re they’re constantly thinking about, you know, back-up systems, disaster recovery plans, you know, they’re building their facilities and earthquake proof fireproof, you know, places they’re they’re constantly focussed on data encryption. These are skills that they’re not. Simple on and they’re only getting harder and, you know, there’s so many times where, you know, i’ll go into a client and you see the server that sitting in a closet on air conditioned, right cem cem closet where there may be water bottles over it or something like that? Absolutely, you know, and all it takes is a simple air conditioning malfunction and, you know, you could be out of business because there’s pipes and risers in there, a pipe bomb accident literally walked into, you know, a server rooms where there’s water dripping and, you know, they put the makeshift things up, directing water. We are men and that’s just the risk is just too high and there’s really help. Ten years ago, fifteen years ago, you didn’t have that choice. He kind of had to live with that risk, but in today’s, day and age, you don’t have to live with that risk again. You can leverage software, the service cloud computing for what? It’s good at on dh. Just vastly different than just a few years ago. Those those closets, server rooms, that’s when people get creative with plastic sheets and duct tape. Yeah, have seen it all year and you’re hyping, maybe like a hose or rubber number. A garden hose cut from somebody’s home and that’s it. You got it. You got it. And that’s the problem with one simple thing. And you can have ah, catastrophes. So you can sleep a lot easier at night, knowing that organizations are going to the level they are to protect what’s so important to your organization again, back to that constituent data and the related financial data. Right. Okay, so all this important data now you. You you mentioned security, but let’s spend a couple of minutes with it. How do we know that the off site storage of our precious data, the stuff you just mentioned is is safer than being on our computers that we can see that i can control and have physical, physical security over the great question. And that’s where i mentioned early really need toe do your homework when when you’re looking at organizations you want to look for under organizations that really, truly understand, you know what they’re doing, you know, some of the industry standards out there that you want to look at you? Have they done? Enough the sixteen hold on jargon jail twice in ten minutes, six homes for seventy and it’s just really about, you know, i mean, auditing. Obviously, most folks are familiar with financial audit on dh these audits were created for the purpose of systems and making sure that the day to day operation of those systems are in line with best practices. All right, so now, what is what is seventeen at the end of a sixteen again? Just that it’s a set of rules, basically that organizations need to follow and you have it have an independent auditor come in and look at the controls are are in place and actually test those controls to make sure that again, you’re back-up there are happening regularly that you have a disaster recovery plan that you’ve actually executed that disaster recovery plan. They’re going to spend a lot of time in your databases and make sure that your data’s encrypted and make sure there’s no sensitive credit card information or different things, you know that that are in there that regular folks within your organization should not have access to. All right, so these are a set of audit standards. You got it? I got it. Okay, look at that. If they’re dealing again with any payment related information, you want to make sure i’m gonna get in trouble with the jargon police here, but that their pc i compliant and again that’s the exact same concept. It’s just centers around credit card information. What argast that of standards that the different networks out there, like visa and mastercard have outlined to make sure that anybody that is processing credit card payments are following the standards and make sure that everyone’s data is protected. Okay, this is all critical. Mean credit card processing. So your executive director has a credit card for the for the organization. You may very well get credit card gift either online or by paper when people fill out replied devices. This is all part of that level of that needed security, right? And now what’s pc i what is pc? I stand for payments, compliance industry. And i forget the actually what the acronym it means, but again, it’s all about that that set of standards that you need to comply by ifyou’re goingto all be involved in credit card transactions. Okay, which are pretty common. I think absolutely all right, so if we’re going to move to ah cloud solution, how do we then make the transfer that from or the conversion from our manual system or whatever we’re using to something that’s off site in cloud based sure, you want to focus on that during implementation, and you want to talk about that plan that you know, with your new private provider front from the beginning? Um, most things today can be automated and, you know, just with the web itself just integration of systems there’s just so much easier than it is today. So in most instances, you’ll look to some sort of programmatic way to get your key data from your legacy systems into your new systems, you know, having toe rechy that information, you know it most times you don’t need teo, but again, if the data set a small enough, you know, sometimes that doesn’t make sense. And because it’s just a one time transfer of information, there are times where from a budget standpoint where that makes the most sense you mean manual manual king makes the most sense, exactly, exactly for the kids to think about it from the beginning of the process, you don’t want to get too far down the path and then start bringing up the topic and then realize that there is going to be some investment in terms of some programmatic interchange. So, you know, having those discussions upfront, understanding the implications and then being able to make the best decision based on what makes sense for your organization is aaron schmidt is chief product officer at billhighway, which you’ll find it billhighway dot com, how are these services typically paid for what? How are the fees work? That’s one of the great things about cloudy as well as, you know, in the past, he typically installing, you know, large systems on your different client server based systems ten again, twenty years ago with a significant capital investment upfront and then ongoing maintenance and licensing xero and the cloud, you know, move to a much more subscription based, you know, pricing model, and you really don’t have to make those significant capital investments up front and it’s more of ah, pay as you go model, which can be very attractive to smaller organizations that, you know, just historically haven’t had the funding the ability to make those up from capital investments for the large systems there? What do you really just kind of changes the playing field and allows any organization tio have the power of ah, very what do you paying for as you go? Is it per transaction or it’s a monthly retainer based female? How does pay as you go work it’s all different? You know, some organizations will charge you more of ah, per user fee. Some organizations, we’ll charge you more of a transactional based model, especially if they’re involved at all in the processing of online payments or donations. So it’s really gonna depend on on the provider and what the specific functionality is, you know, that they’re providing, but the beauty is that pay as you go model, getting rid of that that up front investment what’s interesting about cloudgood puting is it’s it’s, analogous to where we were thirty years ago twenty five, thirty years, roughly in computing, where it was mainframes and people had, you know, dumb terminals and you had to go to a terminal room, of course, because he asked, and it wasn’t just tom it’s exactly how to think of it. Is all you need is that dumb, you know, internet browser and another one of the beauties you could be anywhere in the world longs you have that intercut internet connection, you know, tying back to again that that mainframe like environment you got, everything you need is a great difference is being, of course, now it’s all desktop, you don’t go to terminal room, and your organization doesn’t maintain that mainframe. You’re just paying for access to it up in the cloud exactly. And in the sharing of that, that cost across all the organizations customers is what’s so critical where before an organization had to absorb that completely by themselves, you know, again in an industry that they’re not experts in and spreading that cost out across all of ah, cloud providers, clients, you know, just really benefits everybody way have just a couple of minutes before we have to wrap up. Erin, we’ve been talking about your internal processes accounting, but this can be these processes can be integrated with the external your bank. How does that work? Absolutely. And today again, we talk about the differences the back in the client server days, you know, into the true, you know, web based world and it isn’t general systems have been they’ve gotten better and better at integration, and you need to look for solutions that embrace integration, you know, as part of our culture, a lot of systems today that kind of claim to be good at everything and that’s just not the case, you know billhighway for example, a great financial management tool, but we’re not a great cms toole were not a great here, and you’ll see a memory with hold on hold on crn when i was customer relationship management, what cms concept management comes and think about your front end if a lot of your revenue comes in from from donations, you think about the the website that your donors are used to going teo make those donations, we have just like forty five seconds before i have to wrap up, so my charity has a relationship with td bank can you’re saying that i can integrate my accounting system using cloud computing and be integrated with my account or accounts at td bank after the limit? The counting systems are get embracing this integration and you see examples really across the board where payment processing and online banking are becoming more and more fully integrated with your accounting system and that’s really kind of were billhighway hang a hat is we’ve actually built in accounting system that sits on top of banking platforms from the beginning of tiny that your bank over here and you’re counting system over here. And and it was it was a batch process to put the two of them together every night or something batch process, and yet people involved reconcile ing those things, and really one of the reasons accounting systems in-kind departments exist is making sure that those two things they’re in synch and you’re expending a lot of time and money making sure that that’s happening and organizations like billhighway have asked the question you do, these things need to be separate, and we believe, you know, very strongly that they don’t, and we believe in, you know, five, ten years, you’re not gonna have ah system doing payment processing and in online bank to log into and then in accounting system, log into your have one user interface to log into that is allowing you to execute all three of those and then be able to leverage the operational efficiency that that that could create. Welcome to tony martignetti non-profit radio coverage of fund-raising day two thousand twelve were hosted by the association of fund-raising professionals, the greater new york city chapter, and we’re in midtown manhattan at the marriott marquis. My guest right now is jay frost. He is ceo of fund-raising info dot com, and his seminar topic is a little provocative, not too provocative, curious, popping the question moving from engagement to action online. J frost welcome, thank you very much. Nice to be here, it’s a pleasure to have you on and to meet. Finally, we’ve we’ve been connected through social social networks through for quite some time, a long time a couple of years, i think, but now meeting face to face. And i’m really not too impressed. So you look better than i imagine. He’s gracious, and i’m obnoxious. Um, let’s. See? Okay, so we wanna engage. People are already engaged with our non-profit but with our charity. But we want to move them into giving online. Oh, yeah, we’re gonna have some time, but generally, what is our process for doing that? Asking, asking them to give go to the next level and okay, so when we talk about engagement, what level are they engaged? Hypothetical? Well, that does really range, right? Okay, organizations are our messaging all the time. They’re out there talking to people about the good that they do, and they do that in different ways. According to this scope and scale and their marketing plan, sometimes it’s is really a nice, rigorous plan. And sometimes it’s haphazard, but fundamentally were engaging with organizations because we we find something that they do appealing here’s, thie even stronger than appealing. I mean, they they move it, they move us. We love their work for some reason. Well, yes, i mean, hopefully radio and and we’re right, especially in social media. Be talking about that kind of passion all the time, so i’m all for passion. But at some point we’ve got to be like the session title implies at some point we got to be willing to say okay, well, i love you too. But now it’s time to get together and compare notes and work on something together. So it’s about asking people to make a commitment. Okay, how do we begin? Teo asked, how do we approach them? Well, i think it’s not dissimilar from all the other things we do in fund-raising it’s just that a lot of social has been about marketing rather than sales. And so it’s a matter of merging those two pieces instead of building a wall between them that i work with the number of organizations where they will build very large followings of people, and talk about a lot of really important things that work, that they do every day, or they share scriptural quotes. Or they will go in and look at a specific program in detail, share images from it all these things are great. They really engage people. Then they failed to just take that one additional step and say, come on over to thiss page here’s a link, and then you can support this next year, next month tomorrow, so what’s the reluctance why aren’t we doing it more? Well, i think part of it is because we’ve been given ah the wrong message for the last couple years about what social media’s should be and how far it can go, right? And in fact, there have been a lot of people that i like to call the gurus and ninjas because they often refer to themselves as good, wasn’t it? Who will say you really have to build that passion? First, we have to build the passion first, and i understand the emotion behind that here’s here’s, the fundamental challenge if we began every organization like that, none with survive every every organization needs to have today’s equivalent of the sustaining gift of the major grant of the the money given at the door of some kind of purchase. If we failed to do that, we lose the ability to sustain our mission, and social is really no different from anything else in that regard, except that the audience is far larger and the acquisition cost is far lower, right? Right. Okay, so we say thie advices asked, but we’re accustomed to doing very different work related but leading up to but were afraid to make the ask right to convert someone into a donor that’s who we’re talking about, right, even and even a modest donor, maybe a fifty dollars, a year donor. What’s what’s your advice? I mean, well, let me ask you this way, does your advice vary based on whether we’re asking through facebook or we’re asking our twitter followers? Well, i don’t know that would vary that much by the channel. Specifically, it might be by the kind of content we’re sharing or the event itself or the ask itself. I guess what i’m saying is that we need to be willing to marry the different parts of the program so instead of them operating in silos, we gotta find a way to, for example, have the e mail campaign fed by social. So a part of this is organizational structure. It’s absolutely, or you don’t want marketing communications not to not be talking to development and institutional advance, right? Absolutely. And in fact, i think a lot of times we we’ve given the social aspect to people in it because we saw two somehow alien and complicated, or we’ve given it to the marketing department because we saw it as a channel for broadcasting. And while those the people in those in those skill areas are terrific, they have terrific skillsets great contributions, they make two organizations, we need to have somebody who’s willing to actually say, okay, glad you love us now would you be willing to support this activity? They need to be involved in all the messaging, all those components, okay, so who should be saying it? Well, in that case, what we really need to do is have a social media department, which is made up of people were fund-raising including fund-raising all right, so we need to break down the organizational silos and also the conceptual silos about what social networks are for and how far we can go with them. And and i’ve seen this pretty consistently. I went to a conference last year where it was a room full of people going to a session on social media that i was conducting, and we did it kind of. A show of hands afterwards, how many people had a fundraiser in the team that was responsible for a social media messaging and it was less than ten percent? And i saw something happened just recently it another conference in very similar result. So i think that we we have to we have to find a way to marry these concepts very early in the program, and then we will use that technologies as the bridges between them so that if, for example, we won’t go to facebook and to say, will you give today? We would say there there’s here’s, the program that we’ve been talking about? It’s really important, we need your support for it where you click this link and come over here and do so so that’s it. Then we’re going to use another platform to collect the information, to collect the donation in the same way that we do now through email or our website. So it’s a process of moving from one place to another using the correct messaging within that context of that channel. Okay, so let’s talk a little more, even in more detail, so that people can start to activate themselves. Two break down their own pre conceptions. Misconceptions about this limitation around around social media. What? What is what is a preferred method of doing that let’s say on with your with twitter followers? How might we start to get them? We’re putting out bursts, they’re very engaged. We’ve got a good number, let’s say we’ve got a couple of thousand followers, but that’s as far as we’ve gone and we don’t really know much about them other than that they’re following us on twitter way don’t know, we don’t know who they are beyond that, right? How do we start to message while they’re there? There are a whole bunch of elements there there, really interesting. Okay, one is the task, interesting questions all the time i had to, but they’re running on you to get in there. Open ended. So interesting answers. Where do i start? Which apple do i pick first? Well, one part is about knowing who the donors are. Okay, let’s, focus on how do we get more information about who are two thousand? Twitter followers aren’t right exactly. Well, there were a couple ends to that one is, of course, when we go in, we when we have an existing following, we could start researching those people by simply looking their profiles and then connecting that to other kinds of profiles for example, their web pages there, they’re linked in pages and that we’re gonna learn quite a good deal about them. A bigger challenge right now is finding information on people already in our file who are on these social channels, but we don’t know that they are there, and there are some tools now to do that there. Is there a couple of companies unfortunate don’t think they’re in the hall here today, but they’re a couple of company named them it’s. Ok, well, i know one is small act, for example, small act small act, which what they do is they will take a file of email addresses, and they will then upend the social handles so instead of wonderful. So instead of just trying to figure out who might be on facebook and then say, well, you post something for us, you find out the people who had the greatest influence and then you reach out to them directly. Now can we give listeners another another company that does that just to give them a choice? Don’t i want? Or i would, but i’m forgetting. The name right now and there are only two. But if i’m happy to tell anybody if they contact me after, ok, if it occurs to you in the next fifteen minutes so shattered i mean, i shout out random phones right time i’ll do that. So you’re invited to do that as well. Listeners know that it’s mostly randomized. Okay. What? What other advice? I mean, you see now, it’s? Not really channel specific. But you said i might question opened up a whole bunch of interesting topics are now we know more about who the people are, right? What else? What else was interesting? Well, another piece of that is how our people actually raising money. I mean, are they raising money by direct if they are raising money at all? Are they doing it by direct, ask or by empowering people to ask on their behalf? Clearly, the answer is number two. Eso an example. That’s very easy now is charity water charity water has been very successful in having people donate their birthdays where a person will say i would like tio instead giving me birthday presents this year will you go to my form, make a gift for charity water to bring potable water to people who don’t have any. And that’s that’s been very successful, they’ve raised. I understand over forty five million dollars to date there are now embarking a one billion dollar campaign. So i think fundamentally, what they’re doing right, and it’s been done by other organizations, is by empowering their donors to use some tools off line and use the social environment to go out and spread that message with those links to their pages. Charity water also happens to be very good about showing impact. Yes, absolutely. I think that’s a big that’s. A big piece, obviously on the programmatic side, they’re showing that your dollars could make a direct impact. Its but even when it’s not quite as tangible, i think organizations have done very well in these ways. Another example that i used today is something like humane society, the humane society, united states. What are they doing? That’s right in this context, they again have causes page, you know, so people can make a donation that way. They have their own contribution pages, etcetera. So they’re driving traffic to these places so people could make a donation. But really, what they’re doing is they’re fostering that relationship and empowering the donor. And one really basic level is to go and react and respond and engage with every single person who posts something. So if you were to go right now and send a tweet to somebody, the commission society, you’re going to get a response, you know? And i don’t know of any other charity in america that does that. Well, let me push back on that we’ve had that conversation for a long time in fund-raising about the thank you call and ah lot of us know jerry panis, who talks about this stuff, and i’ve done some sessions with him at the institute for charitable giving this last year, a lot of fun because he has so much history and so much experience with different organizations, and he often tells the story listeners who don’t know his last name is spelled p a n a s yes, and you’ll see it either is jerry are usually jerrold with a j that’s, right? Yeah. Okay, please. Lots of books to his to his credit center, etcetera. But he talks about these organizations that that decide to thank their donors by phone. And this is a long before social media. So just one levels you pick up the phone and just say thank you. And so he was talking with a few organizations about this and the importance of making i think he said ah, thank you. Phone call to everybody who gives that leased a thousand dollars and one person said while we do it for everybody who gives one hundred, and he thought that was great, of course, s o he said, well, how how do you do it? And that’s that’s terrific. And and they said, well, actually, we do. And i think they said about fifty six thousand like this a year fifty six thousand phone calling organization it’s a big organization, but here’s the question, why are they big? I would argue that the reason why they’re large is because they built that level of engagement because they thank everyone because there because the most important thing is the person had told jerry and the rest of group, what is there that’s more important than saying thank you? And but and the reason i mention this in social media context is because in social media that’s, exactly the currency if you say something great, i retweet it, and that means that i think it has value and i care and you probably care that i that i’ve done that, but institutionally, we have failed at that we will often broadcast really good content that we think it’s in the interest of our of our constituents, but we haven’t been very good about saying, wow, thank you for sharing this content or that was a really great thing that you said we really appreciate your carrying our baton it’s very easy to dio i’ve been mystery shopping at non-profits on twitter, okay, couple years, yes, we’re all going all post content about them, oftentimes with their handle to see what they’ll say, and this is various things they have a job opening at a gift that’s been made to them there posted some terrific content, and then i’ll wait to see what they say. Now i’ve done this organizations i know nothing about. I don’t know anyone there, i’ve done it with organizations i know but haven’t given teo and i’ve done it with organizations where i give including a couple, whether in my will and they know it, and i would have to say that at least ninety nine percent that time there is xero response to anything that i posted about them and and really that’s just like the thank you. What? Why? Why not decide to make a mental shift and simply say that while we don’t have all day to subic, sit around, say thank you, we can take ten percent of our day on social to say we’re going to talk with people in a way that tells them that we care and that’s that’s actually an outstanding example, including especially, i think, the ones that you have in your will and they know it, but there isn’t a closer relationship, and they’re not monitoring their social networks. Two see that you’re you’re commenting on the relationship, and they should be commenting back. And part of that, of course, is is roger that the person who’s working on that social account is now pushing housing and pushing and and not looking and you know it’s not their fault. It’s their job to create content, but not to monitor what what’s coming back or to monitor the relationships with donors because their job is all about the content. It’s not about the dahna relationships, but no donors, you know, no bucks, no buck rogers, yeah, that’s my philosophy on fund-raising all right, ah, look, i’m just going to open up the sort of generally mean other advice the charity’s khun can execute. For me, that’s a that’s a pretty simple one monitor your channel, monitor your name across all the networks that you’re on that’s right and respond when the name is someone that’s should be recognizable to me, so cross check what other simple advice like that? Well, you can use the same philosophy to try and gather new donors knew or at least knew constituents, knew interested parties, so it goes beyond the kind of follow the followers or follow the followers followers thing to looking for people. We’re talking about the things that matter to you. So in the case of the kind things that way, there is our currency, maybe it’s philanthropy or if i’m in a cancer organization to look att at, people were mentioning cancer, and then to reach up into the to them directly and talk about what is of interest to them. Tio applaud the kinds of things they’re posting and that’s going to drive traffic back to you. I mean, i think it has a direct economic effect, but it also has a has a way of showing them that were really authentic and what we’re doing, we’re not just selling something, which i think should be appealing to the people right now who are monitoring our channels, that the folks who are largely managing our social media right now have their heart in the right place, which is to say they care that that we’re having an honest and authentic conversation. The problem is that there aren’t necessarily in a position to have it with the people who are the most invested with our causes, so if we can improve that, that and then e-giving some incentive direction, encouragement to go out and try to find more people who care about the same things, we could really broaden our audience. Another piece that’s of great interest to me is about global amglobal fund-raising organizations, the united states have been largely focused on domestic fund-raising forever and that’s been in for very practical reasons. If you live in new york, there’s a lot of opportunity in new york, so maybe you’d go outside to the tri state area. If you live in california, you have a national charity. Maybe you’ll reach out to new york and perhaps texas in chicago and d c in a couple places florida, but you’re going to stop. In the places that, you know, we have a critical mass of donors, and a lot of that is driven by where you can travel and who you have addresses for here’s. The thing about global social media is that if i post something now, not a person in beirut could read is easily a za person in boston or tokyo as well as texas. So if we start trying to send messages out in a way that says, we’re welcoming not just the people here who care about this stuff, but we’re really welcoming everyone. We have the opportunity to completely expand our audience for our work and because that we aren’t inhibited by those addresses because the mail weii there’s really nothing, nothing inhibiting us from continuing to stuart these donors once we activate them, empower them and that’s again. Why we need to have stewardship and solicitation is always a piece of this fabric because otherwise we’ll never have the opportunity to say great glad you liked us. Can you come over here and support us? And the same thing is true. Domestically, we for a long time been focused on donors who kind of looked like our boards, the past and that’s been a pretty homogeneous place. But today, because the nature of social media and its audience it’s so widely diverse, especially the audiences that are going to become more mohr, the biggest part of the american fabric in the next few years that we have an opportunity to talk to them right now in a way that we never could’ve with our list. No. Hello and welcome to tony martignetti non-profit radio for june twenty second twenty twelve we’re always talking about big non-profit ideas for the other ninety five percent. I’m your aptly named host. I do hope you were with me last week, i’d be in distress if i learned that you had missed motivating your board for major e-giving to start from the fund-raising day conference earlier this month, jennifer herring had advice on motivating, working with and supporting your board to help them step up to fund-raising duties and revisiting your twenty twelve prospect plan. Bob evans is a member of the editorial board of giving yusa and rob mitchell is the ceo of atlas of giving, and they’re both here to talk about giving in two thousand eleven and look forward a little bit. Um, let’s. Start with bob evans. Um, the methodology between e-giving yusa and atlas of giving differ considerably. What? What is bob? What is giving us a cz method for assessing fund-raising last year? E-giving you’re giving us a historically is the most accurate report on charitable giving in america. Refined it’s methodology slightly over the last couple of years, but, uh, it’s still considered to be the most accurate and consistently, uh, uh, focus. Uh, various estimates are based on economic metro’s models using tax data, government estimates from the i r s and other components of the federal government and other research institutions. Okay, but there’s a big survey component, right? Absolutely. Yeah, let’s talk about the thing, isn’t it? I mean, i think that’s what it’s known for is being a survey of charities when you talk about that individual charities air not surveyed umbrella organizations, air survey ok, well, i’m really organizations such as, uh, the the council on foundations, counsel for aid education, the national center for charitable statistics of the urban institute on some other organizations like that that compiled data for various sectors of the e-giving factors. Okay? And so you do the survey at the end of the calendar year, and then and then every june the report comes out. Is that right? That’s correct so that that the report also is revised twice based on new data that comes in from especially with the federal government. The i r s so that the estimate that came out for two thousand eleven giving will ultimately be revised slightly twice more. Okay? And i know you have a revision from two thousand ten, but we’ll get to that. We’re not. We’re not there yet. You want to talk about the methodologies first and so roughly how? Many charities are represented by the umbrella organizations that you survey. Well, they’re one point two million. One point, one one point two million non-profits in the united states is registered with the irs. And then there are two hundred twenty thousand houses of worship. But but how many are represented by the umbrella organizations that you are surveying? Uh, no. Unclear it’s. Probably the most complete survey of anybody but one point, one million non-profits air not surveyed, but because of the methodology that hughes okay, all right, but you, but you don’t know the percentage of the one point one million that you are that you are encompassing in the overreaching surveys. Okay, because we’re dealing with nine nineties were dealing with other federal reports that all non-profits are required to file. Okay. Rob mitchell, uh, atlas of giving what? What’s your methodology there. Well, tony, to give you the methadone, the methodology that we have is that using more than forty two years of published e-giving data and the u s, we were able to prove that charitable giving in the u s is specifically and directly tied to certain factors in the economy and those those factors in the economy changed by sector and by source uh, and by state and so we’ve been able to prove beyond a shadow of a doubt, the charitable giving his directly tied too specific factors in the economy, not just the overall economy. We know what those factors are, and we have built algorithms when bac checked against more than forty two years of data match up at, uh, ninety nine and a half percent coefficient of correlation, this is the same kind of technology that is used in many macro economic measurements in the us, everything from unemployment to retail sales and so are are unlike what bob’s talked about, we don’t rely on surveys at all. We have a macro view of the entire non-profit e-giving sector, we break things down by nine sectors, four sources and fifty states. And uh uh, the interesting thing about our methodology and technology is that while it is useful to look back and we’re talking now about two thousand eleven, but we already have numbers we measured by month, and so we already have Numbers through last month of 2 thousand twelve, and more importantly, we have developed a forecast. Based on the realities of the factors in the economy and demographics that dr charitable giving, we have a very active forecast out for the next twelve months. Ah, just a little time, a couple seconds really just give listeners remind listeners like, just i should say of a few of the data points that giving us a cz forecasts are are based on well, you mean the alice e-giving what i said, i said, giving us that. Yes, i’m sorry, the atlas of giving what are just some of your econometric data points? We’ll sew it. It ranges from everything from i think most people have been in the nonprofit sector for awhile realized gdpr a significant player, but it tony, it ranges from housing starts to unemployment to corporate inventories. There are a variety of factors, and depending on what sector or wet source we’re talking about, they’re they’re different things. Obviously, the stock market in two thousand eleven it was huge for some sectors and for some sources of gifts. So, um, we have specific algorithms built for each each of nine sectors, each of four sources and for all fifty states, ok, understand on dh, those sources are the different charitable missions, i’m sorry, the sources of the funders, the four sources would be individuals, foundations, corporations and request and sector and the sectors are gonna religion, education, the arts and so forth. Okay, excellent. So what did two thousand eleven look like to atlas of giving what happened between two thousand ten in two thousand eleven? Well, two thousand eleven was a remarkable year for for bounce back giving. In the united states. We recorded the national e-giving increase of seven and a half percent in two thousand eleven, and it was fueled largely by a very robust stock market increase, especially in the first seven months of the year. And you see that reflected in several things. Back-up. Just as in a couple of examples. Donorsearch vice funds had record years. Fidelity give fund. In their gifts. For two thousand eleven, vanguard was up seventy five percent. Colleges and universities are you have to do is google college and university record fund-raising sing, and you will see literally dozens and dozens of examples, everything from from harvard and stanford. Teo small community colleges who had record fund-raising years in two thousand eleven. Right on dh. How did two thousand eleven compare to pre recession two thousand seven? Well, it’s uh it’s recovered quite nicely. We’re well past prerecession numbers in terms of total giving in the u s and you know, there’s, there are some storm clouds on the horizon. Our forecast is is a bit sobering forking last quarter of two thousand twelve, we’re going to get well. Let’s not go to the forecast was wantto compare apples and apples for so and adjusted for inflation. What kind of increase did you see from two thousand? Elation? Inflation has baked baked into all of our algorithms. So we’ve got that handled. Okay, so no adjustment necessary from that adjustment. That’s seven and a half percent growth from ten to eleven. Yes. Okay, bob evans. What did what did giving us a c from two thousand ten to two thousand eleven e-giving usa says that two hundred ninety eight point four billion dollars were given to non-profits in ten sectors across the economy. This represented about a four percent increase from two thousand ten. But when adjusted for inflation, it’s only ever about a one percent increase over two thousand ten. Ok, now those numbers are quite different. Well adjusted for inflation, one percent from giving yusa. And the same number seven and a half percent growth from the atlas of giving sabat that’s interesting. What? Uh, rob, what was your total giving number? Was it near the two hundred ninety eight point four billion that giving us a found? Oh, no, we’re well beyond that are part number was, uh, three hundred forty six billion dollars given. Okay, so we have a delta of difference of about fifty billion dollars. Roughly? Yeah, okay. Anybody care to offer their thoughts on why those the percentage and the and the gross number differ so much? Who wants to take a stab at that? Anybody you know, i’ll take a bit of a stab at it, tony, i think if you go back to two thousand eight and two thousand nine and just a bit of from my past, at one time i was the chief development officer of the american cancer society and in terms of using surveys and so forth we had we had a board policy that we didn’t participate in any survey, so it didn’t matter if it was independent sector or the association of fund-raising professionals or or the non-profit times we didn’t participate. And so you had america’s largest health charity not participating in the kinds of surveys, and then there were also there’s also some there’s, some organizations that provide this information, i think the good thing about the alice of giving it that we’re agnostic we’re not subject to two thousand two thousand ten was was an interesting year because you had this large outcry from some very large organizations that didn’t do well the previous year and put give my impression is that it put some pressure on giving us a to reconsider their methodology, which they’ve now changed, but we’re not subject to that sort of thing because we’re not changing our methodology, our methodology solid, we’re sticking with it. Okay, okay, well, let’s give bob evans a chance. You know, the keeping things civil. But i think that’s interesting because the numbers and the percentages do vary so, so greatly. Bob what? What, what? What? What’s your take on this. I think the whole issue really is. How is your organization’s faring fromthe fund-raising arena today? Uh, that regardless of the surveys, regardless of the reports like atlas e-giving are giving us a it really comes down to the bottom line of how each organization is faring and how they’re, uh, seeing support uh, these are all best guesses at at the best. Well, okay, but i think, surely uses that both get atlas of giving and giving us a are reasonably up for two thousand eleven, representing the second consecutive year for increased e-giving but also understanding the two thousand seven undoubtedly was the best year for giving that was a member of two thousand seven was the start of the great recession, okay? And that’s, when everything had cascaded groundwork rob you if i could add a little bit toe weapon, uh, saying here, you know, one of the things that we’ve been able to observe for the first time, i might add, is that, um, you take a look at two thousand eleven, there are many organizations that didn’t do well in two thousand eleven, and the reason is that if they are heavily weighted on relying on small gifts from lots of lots of small gifts from lots of small donors, they’re tremendously impacted by continuing i unimportant. On the other hand, colleges and universities donorsearch advised funds, arts organizations and others, not nearly so affected by high unemployment numbers but very favorably affected by favorable stock market value. So there are the charitable giving economy contains a lot of moving pieces, and the fun part for us is that we’re now able to identify what those moving pieces are and how they’re how they’re affecting individual sectors and individual sources, and bob is exactly right. It all boils down to, regardless of what we say or what giving yusa says says it boils down to how are you doing? And what will you be doing in the next in the next months and years? Sure, i think, though, that you know, if a charity wants the benchmark against something, it has it’s got a broad spectrum tio to benchmark against because it’s either one percent increase or seventy five percent increase. So depending on how you did individual, you could sort of you could say, well, we’re doing much better than the giving, yusa says. Everybody else did, but not as well as atlas of giving says everybody else did fair enough, but i would also add that in terms of benchmarking and part of the reason that i created the atlas of giving was because at the time that i was a fund-raising practitioner and being evaluated evaluating my staff of value, winning my programs and being evaluated myself it’s very difficult to have that kind of evaluation that comes out so late and doesn’t correspond to my fiscal year, so our benchmark is solid and consistent. Once you set the benchmark, then you’re measuring velocity and trajectory, and our benchmark comes out monthly so that i’m able to compare it to my fiscal year or practitioners compared to their fiscal year, and they can keep a monthly benchmark rather than having to wait till the end of june following the calendar year to find out okay, what the benchmark might be okay, but that’s rob mitchell and he’s, the ceo of atlas of giving and also my other guest is bob evans remember the editorial board of giving us a and we’re talking about last year’s numbers let’s move to some of the sectors bob, you and atlas, i should say you and giving us a agree that hyre ed and donor advised funds did very well, so big increases in two thousand eleven. Absolutely, i want you to talk a little about that. Why? Why you think that is? Well, i believe tremendous growth of dollars for donor advised funds is a reflection of support from middle income america in particular, who are you talking away dollars in donor advised funds because they haven’t been satisfied with the transformational projects that non-profits air presenting their banking future charitable support so you think charities or not, motivating donors sufficiently outside hyre ed, i think even in hyre ed, i think all of the categories in the nonprofit world have to reexamine what they’re asking of donors, and they need to be showing impact in transformation, and then we’ll end up seeing better. E-giving rob mitchell, what’s your take on the two sectors well increased, i think first of all, back to donor advised funds this extraordinarily good year, you know, seventy five percent increase for vanguard, eighty one percent increase for fidelity that can’t be a one year change like that cannot be explained by a change in sentiment donor-centric mint, it is specifically tied to the economy to teo economic and demographic factors. I think that what bob saying played a role, but i don’t think that was a major. Role i think the major role was the ramp up in the stock market buy-in in two thousand eleven, but why would that money go to dahna advice funds instead of directly to one of the sectors that i do not have an explanation for it, actually, and that’s, where bob is saying that he feels charities or not, people are giving, but they’re not giving directly to the charities, right, bob? Because charity’s air not motivating and moving donorsearch efficiently, i think there’s another factor to and that is when you look carefully at some of the people who are creating or funding donorsearch vice funds, they’re doing it in lieu of creating family foundation shin i wouldn’t be with that, okay, that that that major dollars going into donorsearch vice funds enables donors teo beam or anonymous i having less paperwork to file and on considerably cheaper. Setting up a private family foundation is a very expensive endeavour, right? And it requires a lot of legal activity to write on dh considerable oversight and there’s the required spending let’s, let’s look a little bit a new area that is losing market share consistently. Bob will just stay with you religion is suffering right and has been for a while a tte one point half of all giving was directed teo houses, of course. How long ago was that? Half probably about twenty to twenty five years. Ok? And how about now? What’s happening? Thirty two percent of all reported e-giving goes the houses of worship. And how does that compare to last two? Two thousand ten down down about how much? Uh, it’s down a couple of percentage points down in total dollars as well. Okay, especially the pie has gotten bigger. Okay, rob mitchell, what is what is the palace of giving see around religion? Well, we’re religion is still it gives to religion overall are still growing. We’re not showing any decrease, but they’re not the proportionately speaking e-giving growth and religion is not keeping pace with the others declining. In other words, declining market share is definitely declining markets here and their three reasons we believe for that. Well, tell us just one, because we only have a couple of minutes and i want to look a little look a little ahead with you two. So give us your main reason. Well, demographics have changed. Their church membership is declining in the u s that’s that’s one okay, important and younger people are not as motivated by religion or or its institutions at least a zolder people alright and their religion this past year was greatly affected by on high unemployment because they rely typically on lots of small gifts from okay, rob mitchelson, i think the other factor too, is that houses of worship for the least sophisticated in their fund-raising technology and an approach and expertise and complicity of america have not been trained properly like seo fund-raising not a sophisticated intelligent. Okay, all right, all right, rob, we take just maybe thirty seconds or so since yours is a forward looking model. What’s your forecast for two thousand twelve. So the calendar year forecast updated just a week or so ago is that we’re looking at an increase of four and a half percent for total national e-giving in two thousand twelve dahna the unfortunate part is that we probably have experienced the best growth we’re goingto have were showing that e-giving growth is going to begin to decline dramatically in the last quarter of the year and looking ahead of the first half of twenty thirteen, uh, things could get pretty ugly. We have to leave it there on ugly note, but there are brightstep lots, and we talked about those as well. Bob evans is a member of the editorial board of giving yusa. You all work in the charitable sector in some respect either ceo or fundraiser or boardmember or something else. But the charitable sector, by definition is, is giving and in order to be most effective at giving to others, i believe you have to give to yourself and take for yourself. And what i blogged about is taking time off whether your work is in education or shelter or giving a voice to the marginalized. I believe you’ll be better at it if you take time for yourself, and that may be just something like word games or crushing an afghan, um, or doing puzzles or maybe a full vacation, but whatever it is that you need to take care of yourself, i suggest you do it for me. It’s a lot of running and some weight lifting, and i have ah, second home and i have a lovely hot tub there. And this month, scott and i are talking about video. How come, scott wise video? Why is video? Important? Uh, all you have to do is look at you to see that number one. It is popular medium. Everybody wants to be. I have video and produced video, you know, it’s kind of the fulfillment of of a youth dream for a lot of people. A lot of a lot of frustrated actors, frustrated actors and directors. You mean absolutely, absolutely. Okay, but but it can be valuable in telling your your charities story. It could be valuable in in a lot of places, certainly on the website and sometimes just as kind of a lead in as being something active. Your log in page on your main screen, people like to see things moving. Obviously. Okay, so the trick is, you know, putting something out there, that’s worth what’s the hard part, okay? And i want teo tell listeners that tech soup had a webinar caldnear non-profit video one o one, which are social media manager regina walton found and we’re going to put a link to that women are which is a video on the facebook page and also in the linked in group after the show. So look for that tick soup. Thanks. You blink. So, scott, there are sites that will help people with video, you know, video isn’t necessarily what we normally have thought about his video, another somebody sitting in front of a camera or even motion pictures, if you will, it can be still pictures kind of assembled as a moving slideshow, maybe even annotated with voice or with that ak ground music. So there are a lot of things that pass for video, and they don’t have to be unnecessarily difficult to do, and i think that’s the main thing here is they shouldn’t be tough because if they are tough and you’re not an expert at producing them, then they’re they’re not going to be worth while watching. Okay, you gotta watch out for that, especially if you’re putting him on the home page of your of your of your blogger or your charity’s website right now, it’s a lot of us now, you know, is were attending events or just just doing things are our phones with us that have cameras in? Then we carry little video recorders or your cell phone and has a video camera and it’s and so there it turns out that there are lots and lots of real short length video or just still images. I mean, just look att facebook, facebook now houses. I think the last number i saw was that sixty percent of all the pictures ever taken ever and are on facebook pretty stunning. That’s incredible, yeah, crazy that’s an end and youtube i don’t know something like there are tens of millions of upload to youtube a day zag goring number of video uploads their alright but right and so and so we all have these devices that you’re talking about. Everybody’s got a phone so it’s like p r in your pocket, right? When when? When your charities doing something documented and so what kind of help can you get teo to create? Ah, moving slideshow or or a video on the web? There are many applications there things like i photo and there’s, i think it’s my movie and there’s a win win movie or when editor stuff like that. So depending on the platform that you’re on you khun, just look in your in your program files and find something there and those who work. Those were pretty good they can take your video clips. And you can kind of piece together what they still rely on you doing something and being a little bit technical and saying, ok, how do i put this year? I don’t make transitions between images or between video clips on howto synchronize music and there there are several either free or pretty inexpensive talking about either free or maybe for fifty dollars a year. Um, maybe up to five hundred dollars, you know, if you really want to get some superb results, kind of list off a couple of them, but yeah, that’s what? I love to go free and wait because this right, we haven’t. Article of this on on pitak news. Just go there and look for the for making videos. But the first one talk about an emoto hay and i m o tio dot com and essentially you go there and you log in and create an account. Then you could get the free account just to test it out. The only difference, really, between free and paid account the length of the video think free videos, thirty seconds or something. Which may actually be plenty. Yeah again for for a website the banner on your home page people aren’t going to sit and watch a two minute video, i don’t think, but right thirty seconds and then i mean, there, there for another reason, but something that’s engaging and, like you said, may even just be a slideshow thirty seconds is probably enough, and for a small charity, you know, you stick with what’s free. So the ladies all work is that you assemble your pictures, whether they’re on facebook or or flicker or, you know, one of the other photo on video sharing sites, and then you log into francis an emoto and you say creative video, and then it says, ok, what do you want to include in your video? And you simply select the images that are already uploaded? Or you can upload new ones if you have them on your computer, so it makes it really and, uh, at that point, then you pick a theme, so if it’s a party or if it’s an event they have these pre configured seems ok, and they also have pre configured music. So in essence, you khun select, you know, twenty or thirty images or a couple of video clips, uh, collect them together listselect style listselect music and the service will go ahead and create a set of trans so what’s, really magical is synchronized. Those with the beat of the music, which is something that would take a lot of time manually. In fact, that’s just bringing the transition manually is beyond what i what i ever do with my videos. So so it’s really value and getting some high production value from these, okay? And you can do that that’s an emoto dot com. And you could do that for free for up to thirty seconds. I think the Numbers 30 seconds. I don’t get me wrong. They’re but a short. All right, is there? Ah, you have others there’s a couple of hours and i just kind of rattle these off. I’m less familiar with, um but i know that they have the same basic kind of thing. You upload pictures and that creates it. Does other work for you. One is gulag ster g l o g dafs e r. Okay, i happen to know that one. That one does have a free. That one has a free offering also, right? Yeah, i think i think that’s. Actually, all free. Okay. I don’t think paid offering. Okay, uh, there’s one called kids. Okay, i o a and that has multiple levels. Has got a free version and also has, i think it’s fifty dollars for two years. Okay, so that’s pretty so free or cheap. I mean, twenty five dollars, a year. He’s. That thing that looks good. That zoho there’s there’s. Another one called duitz. Stupid flex flex. I’m not sure if they’re supposed to mean stupid or stupendous, but u p l i x and that’s. Actually. Probably the most expensive one, but also has a lot of additional capabilities. But it’s five dollars per month. Basic price all the way up to almost sixty dollars per month. Yeah. Okay. So, you know, you have to. I want to get some experience before your excellency. Yeah, okay, but they still have a little cost offering. And ah, bunch of these air free. Okay, excellent. Actually. So i tell you what, we’ll put links to all those on the facebook page and also on the lincoln group as well as that text webinar that i that i mentioned earlier. So we look for look for those resources on the facebook page and linked in group um, well, so we still have more time. Scott, what were going to say about video what’s your advice? Do it. I would say media mean, everyone takes pictures of their events of their staff if you just want to show, you know, pictures of the causes that you’re supporting, gather them together and just do something you’ll probably get well, you definitely get some experience. You may get some good feedback from the people that are watching and that’s kind of where you take it from there is, how did they do? Did they get it enhanced the site that people like it has been asking for more or different kind of content and just say the first thing to do is just put something together, get it up there and see what the reaction is, okay? And setting up a youtube channel is a pretty simple endeavor, right? If if you don’t want to put this on the block. Sure, sure, youtube channels a good thing, but like anything, it’s, youtube channels depend on kind of regular updates, just like if you’re putting together a vlog, you have to make it change the add things to it on a pretty frequent basis. And that’s that’s, that’s what the youtube channels are all about other that you can certainly store videos on youtube and then, you know, present them on your website on your block. Ok, right. So so you could have multiple videos now that we know we can do this for free. And we know that a short video is works fine, and we know that these sites are so full featured, we could end up having numerous videos and, like you said, save them on youtube and then rotate them, rotate their appearance on the block her you could also post them as updates. You know, people love to see themselves, right? Well, most people like to see themselves as long as they’re not doing crazy things. But if you have events, i think that’s probably the very best use of these is to have events, uh, walk around with a camera or with a little with your phone, and you talk to people on record what you’re talking about and then kind of peace together, right? We’re talking about video with scott koegler, our regular contributor and the editor of non-profit technology news, which is that n p tech news dot com scott so since everybody has these phones, i mean, we could be empowering people within the charity who work for us or volunteer for us. They could be composing video no, exactly, or at least contributing. So if again i go back to the event situation, if you have a bunch of people there, which i guess is really what you want. Anyhow, it is an event. Yeah, hopefully it is not standing in a room like yourself, right? Right? So have people walk around and make their own to make their own little video clips? Have them document what is going on? And at the end of the event, uh, sent out an email asking everyone for their whatever their contributions might be on. Then you’ve got not only fast that you’ve got a diverse range of of the points, and i’m thinking, not unlike what what couples do at weddings. You could probably put some low cost video device on tables or something at the event don’t know. Is there such a thing of low cost video capture device? I’m sure they don’t, you know depends on what you call low cost, probably fifty dollars or so, but i think i think it’s a pretty good assumption that that half the people at any given function i’m goingto have video enabled smart bones. Oh, yeah, yeah, right, they’ll have their own as well, right? Yeah. So that’s, you know, that’s planning what you want to do is, uh, kind of in the invitation or in the announcement or along, even on twitter, if they’re live blogging, be sure you get get the announcement out that once you’re done worth your images and your video, send them here and, you know, a lot of the phones will actually take take images and videos and send them right there, right? When, according to your phone, it’s already connected to the internet. So say, share and you share it off with a particular destination email account. Okay, excellent. And then you’ve got, um, you know, pretty much, right? What? Okay, every once in a while i don’t know if you if it’s you stopping or we get well, a little sound. You sound like darth vader. I don’t you probably you’re not doing a darth vader imitation. Our impression, are you? Well, i’ll take the helmet off here. Okay? I’ve seen pictures of you. You don’t look like darth vader to me, but which is, which is, which is a positive. Okay, but just it’s nothing you’re doing. I don’t think, but just in case the listeners are concerned. But he’s not doing a darth vader impression and way here, it also but there’s really nothing we can do about it. Okay, so, yeah, i was going to ask you about sharing the video. So what about are there other other ways of sharing the video? I mean, if the phone is not enabled to share that way, or maybe the video is too long, i know i face that on my phone. Sometimes i can’t share a video that i’d like to what’s what? Maybe drop box or something? What’s. Another way of getting video back to the charity. Sure. First of all, you have to get it off your phone on and i’ll leave that to yeah, the knowledge of the person with the phone. That’s probably want to do to kind of figure out what it’s for for many different phones were basically, somehow you gotta plug it into your computer and move that that video file over to the computer. And then, of course, you can email it. Um, you know, one of the things you talk about there’s the size of the video files, right? And that’s typically what prevents you from sharing it from your phone? And i would suggests that any video quick should be under five seconds overviewing walk home. Recording video. Yeah, because you’re looking at a little clip, right? When we put this video together, if it’s only going to be thirty seconds long, how long can each individual could be? Uh, right. Okay. I was envisioning. Yeah, i was thinking of longer clips, but now, right. Okay, so you want people to send you a bunch of short? Sent a bunch of short clips, right? And you see, here is a little secret. If you look at any video production movie, a television production, anything, just take a look and see quickly the scenes transition. You’ll find that most most scenes, uh, except for soliloquies or something like that are really just a couple of seconds. So it’s not unusual. It’s it’s the norm. In fact, they have very, very short video clips. Okay, all right, well, this is why scott koegler this is why you’re the the show’s technology contributor. You’re thinking about these things, andi. I was so my thinking was erroneous, all right? And, you know, you could empower volunteers as well. Oh, are people who are benefiting from your services? I mean, they could be armed with a video phone, right? And those are the kind of tell your story kind of thing. So if your if you are let’s say you’re an animal shelter and you got volunteers at the animal shelter or you’ve got people who have a dahna dead animals, you know, every one of those with a story unto itself, many of them may be, you know, pretty inspirational. So if you got your animal home and it’s working out great, you know, ask them to go ahead and take a shot of the of their situation and send it in you. Khun chop it up, put some pictures in it and added to it, you could have a simple contest like tell, you know, tell us your story in twenty seconds or thirty seconds, right, exactly on have a small prize for people or something. All right, all right, excellent way have just about thirty seconds left. Any parting suggestion you want to leave people with, uh, i would say the biggest thing is just do it, do it out. Do it. Um, you know, take videos, take images and intermix both of those things together. Don’t do one or the other, although if all you have is his images that still works. Okay, you get out there. I was just on her show between ten and and noon her show is shocking blue on w b a i which you’ll find at wgbh dot or ge and we were talking about fund-raising and we got her ah, good gift, good pledge thousand dollar pledge while we were on so my thanks to delphine for having me on her show, i hope you were with me on my show last week because i’d be deeply hurt if i found out that you had missed budget building basics and what to do when the donor dies. Budget building basics was with paul connick stein of mission first finance, and he had five steps to construct a budget your critical financial and program planning tool we also talked about how to use your budget throughout the year and what to do when the donor dies. That was aviva schiff, aviva benwikere. The legal notice is staring at you, telling you that a planned e-giving donor has died. Now what? My guest now is susan gordon she’s, the director of non-profit services at causes dot com causes has over one hundred seventy five million users, twenty thousand non-profit partners and thousands of active collective action campaigns. She’s worked as a political organizer, communications specialist for women’s non-profit in cambodia and leader of a rural youth organization in new hampshire on twitter, she’s at susan gordo geo audio at susan gordo and i’m very pleased that causes dot com and her work there brings susan gordon to the show welcome, susan. Thank you so much, tony. Great thanks for having me on. Oh, it’s, my pleasure to have you i’m glad you’re with me. Um, tell us generally about causes dot com for people who don’t know absolutely so causes dot com is a platform where individuals and activists and organizers and non-profits of all budgets and sizes and issues can come to have the best online tools to run action campaigns. So we’ve been around for about five years now as a facebook application, but we’ve actually built out our own platform that lets individuals come on to our site create action campaigns, whether their petitions or pledges or video campaigns, or all of them, uh and get people involved through facebook through twitter and increased their supporter base and get more people taking action. And this is for not only organized charities, but also individuals, right? You said activists, absolutely yep, anybody can come on our site and create an action campaign, so we’ve had some of our best campaigns come from engage non-profit supporters non-profit employees and people who aren’t involved with organizations at all and just have a passion to see change in the world. They’re all about engagement, and we’ll be talking about that. What? What are what are action campaigns when you say that? What do you mean? So basically we wanted to create a way not just to have a community online, you know, we’ve been working on that for a long time. We’ve had over one hundred seventy five million people joined cause communities, but what are really benefit is for organizations and for organizer’s is to be able to get these people on line to take action, so we wanted teo, you know, we realised that to create riel change. In the world, we need to engage people on a different level and get people taking actions that you create a ladder of engagement. So maybe it’s a really easy online quiz at first, but you take a quiz, you watch a video, then you sign a pledge, and then maybe you move up to something like a petition or a fundraising campaign. But we realised that you really need to have that whole ladder of engagement for teo, bring people in where they are and then move them up to more impactful actions. So on causes, we have nine different campaign types, so you can just come on our site, create a cause and what you have the ability to do is post different types of action. So, as i mentioned, we have pledges so a pledge not to text and drive or a pledge to stop smoking. They’re our petition. So whether it’s ah, you know, local business or you know the government, you can create a really easy online petition and sway decision makers. That way there are storytelling campaigns where you can ask people to upload photos and videos around a certain topic. There are polls. Quizzes, video and photo campaigns where you could just engage people through, you know how many, you know, simple statistic like, you know, what’s, the most common type of debris found on our beaches today? Teo, you know, polls what? You know what? What campaign should we focus on for the next year and gather you no feedback from your supporter based so there’s all these different campaign types, but it makes it really easy to create a different types of online action campaigns around whatever campaign you’re trying to run, and these can be very cleverly used to also inform as well as to gather information. I saw one that said what? I don’t remember what the cause was, but what bothers you most, and there were some things about there were some stats about vehicles that i think four out of five parents don’t use car seats correctly or on there was something else about maybe texting and driving. And so it’s it’s a poll that sounds like a simple pole to mae could be used as information as well a as education as well as gathering information back exactly, and we found for particularly for a lot. Of small non-profits you know, they set up a facebook page or a twitter handle, and we’re you know, they reached a certain point, a kind of plateau of how many people had, you know, just sort of find up to receive messages from their organization, and they’re really looking for a different way of of engaging people and it’s not just about, you know, sign up for my facebook page, it’s really, about how do i get more people to come together around the issue that i’m working on? So maybe they’ll get connected to your organization through a simple pole or a quiz about the issue that you’re working on, so it really helps kind of break out of that just sign up for us to sign up for us and really allows non-profits, too, build a community and build support around the issues that they’re working on, and then whether it’s a fundraising campaign or it’s a petition, you know, signature drive, you’ve got you brought a whole new audience people in through the work that you’re doing, and we found that it’s a lot easier for a lot of small organizations to find new people that they may not have been connected to before, but that are really interested in the issue that they’re working on you mentioned earlier the latter of engagement, which is essentially what you’re what you’re describing, wei have just about two minutes before our before ah break what you say little about storytelling as an action campaign. What do people do around that? Yeah, so great example is actually if you go to causes dot com slash bully stories it’s just an example of how one organization is using this this feature, but basically we built a really easy technical way for you just to create you say post in action share stories, and you ask your members teo, to share stories, and they can upload videos and photos and stories on a topic that you asked them tio and so for this example on the bully project, movie was looking for a way to get people to share their own stories, that they were putting a lot about a lot of content, but they wanted their supporters and sort of people interested in the movie teo upload their stories of how they’ve been bullied or their messages of support for people who had been both and i can tell my makes it, you know, they just send him to cause the dot com crash bully stories, and we make it really easy for people to record videos on their computers or to upload photos or just type in a story. So that’s, one way that it’s being used is it was sort of motivated by this ninety nine percent tumbler blawg where you had people holding up signs that say, you know, i stand with the ninety nine percent, so it makes that type of campaign really easy, but also we were really interesting campaigns that conf fit right with whatever you’re non-profit is doing so let’s say, you’re doing a campaign to get more people to go into the national parks with kids. Well, you could create a storytelling campaign that just says, you know, upload a photo of yourself in the park and will, you know, give a prize toe one random person that uploads their photo so it can be sort of a way to either, uh, see evidence of people taking action or doing a really simple, you know, hold up a sign and support campaign. Or it can be a real storytelling campaign. So whether it’s police think, how is this hospital affected your life? Or tell us about your experiences with the disease or tell us, you know, give us your message about why you want to stop big oil, whatever it is that makes this storytelling sort of gathering content from supporters is an user generated content really easy. And so it’s really exciting for aa lot of orga ruminations who have been either building intense, really expensive micro sites or paying developers to come up with a lot of really unique, different types of functionality into their web site to be able to just have a free resource that comes on and you can create these beautiful online pages that are incredibly engaging and then pushed them out through facebook through twitter, through your email list, wherever your supporters are it really we’ve got a lot of organizations that have been creating a lot of different campaigns and and frequently creating lots of different types of actions that plug into all their different campaigns, so let’s talk about how a charity gets started. I know that one of your precepts is that this be simple to use, you don’t have to be technically savvy in order to in order to set up at causes dot com, how does the charity get started? Absolutely so you just go to causes dot com on when you go to that site, you’ll be able to see some some examples of of other campaigns that people are running just to give you an idea of what these things look like and how it works. But you just go to causes that common at the top, uh, you’ll see a button that says start a cause, so if you don’t have a cause already, it takes about two seconds to create, and it basically just gives a sort of campaign hub or a kind of community page that you can post all these actions. Teo so once you started cause, you’ll see a big button at the middle of the page that says post in action, and when you click that it will give you all of our different action tights. And so those are the nine those the nine different types of activities exactly. So you just click post in action, then you’ve got your options for pledges, petitions, video campaigns, etcetera on dh soon you’ll also be ableto at the top. Just either start a cause or just post in action directly, so if you don’t want a community page, you don’t want multiple actions. You just want to start a petition. You’ll also be able to do that too. Okay? And associated with your action campaign there’s a way of people finding mohr information about your work. How does that work? How do you send people elsewhere? That’s a great, great question. So on the page itself so let’s say you have a pledge or you have a quiz. And through taking the quiz you don’t just want people to know about, you know, the you know, whats that statistic about, you know, child safety you really would like them to tow. Connect with other resource is in a part of the bigger campaign. Well, there are a couple ways to do that. One is to include more information. Write on that page itself so on, sort of the information or more info section of the quiz. But the other thing that cause allows you to do is post an update. Everyone who’s taken an action so let’s say you get two thousand people to take this action about child safety. Fantastic. There will be a big button on that action that says posting updates and it allows you to actually email to people’s personal email addresses on update to the action so you can post one, you know, week after they take it that says, you know, thanks so much for taking our quiz about child safety. Now will you sign our petition to lobby the government to make new laws about this topic and so you can plug your next action or tell them how else they can get involved? Whether it’s volunteering or attending an event just connecting with you in different ways, you can post an update to everybody who take that action, send him an email and say, give him an update on how that’s going, but also howto how to take other actions with your organization. And this is all done through the site, right? Exactly. Yes, we built out a whole e mail system, so it makes it really easy. Okay, so somebody does not have to be an email programmer or an html programmer to have this these very robust tools, right? This is this is very simple, absolutely up. You’ll see on every action page a button that says post an update, you just type it in and we’ll email it to everybody. Who’s taken that action for you. Okay, okay, you also have integration with twitter and facebook. What did you say little about those? Yes, well, our facebook integration is actually what made causes works so well. I mean, we have individuals who, you know, are college students that create campaigns. One of our favorite examples is a is a medical student named eric ding who was really passionate about cancer prevention and was getting some of the deaths, cancer research, access to this incredible research by being at med school, but he wanted to share that with a larger audience, and so he wanted to gather people together and then to be able to send them this great information about cancer research. So, again, not your sexiest topic it’s something that in the past, a lot of research organizations and hospitals have struggled with how to use social media, but eric just came onto our site, created a cause, called the campaign for cancer prevention and went out and tried to tell all of his friends about it, and he posted them, posted it on flyers and break rooms, and he told his friends, and he e mailed his aunts and uncles, and he called his parents and said, you know, join, join this online community, and we’re going toe i’m gonna send you some really great information about cancer prevention, and through our the facebook integration on causes is really how his movement grew. So he recruited three hundred seventy two people to join the cause, and they recruited their friends and they recruited their friends and they recruited their friends, and eric now has six point one million people in his car that’s incredible that’s another thing i don’t really he got three hundred seventy five directly and then over six million through through those exactly that’s incredible, the way that that works is that we have plugged in ah, an incredibly deep facebook integration with all of these actions. So basically, whenever you sign a petition or you take a pledge or you take one of these quizzes, it’s automatically getting sent to your news feed. So when your friends signed onto facebook, they see, oh, susan just took a quiz about child safety laws. Ah, and they can see and take the quiz as well. So that type of integration has been incredibly important to getting more people to take the action that you posed thie other part of that is that we actually give you a list of all your facebook friends and say, now that you took this quiz, which of your other friends do you think would want to take the quiz to? And so you can just click and, you know, pick any of your friends on facebook and when you click, okay, you can type a message, and that invitation appears right on their facebook profile, so they find into facebook they get a buzz on their smartphone there’s a ton of ways that they’re going to go back to their facebook profile. See, oh, tony, you know, just sent me this quiz. I wonder what it is and then find out about it as well. Now i have to tell you on tony martignetti non-profit radio we have a full disclosure policy. Are you being personally enriched by the facebook initial public offering today? No, i’m not your not your, not your not okay, so it doesn’t matter to you what the share price of what the facebook share price closes that today exactly causes a completely separate company from facebook, so has nothing to do with it, and we’re actually just building on the place the facebook platform okay? And you personally or not being enriched, i am not ok, ok, good. Alright, so say more about facebook and twitter integration, please. Yeah, so so basically this way, the two sort of sites of facebook integration, which is one when you take the actions it’s being posted to your facebook news feed and then the second is that you can send the invitations right to your friends through facebook and it appears on their facebook provoc girl, these two types of integration have been the way that these these actions have been spreading, so the reason that eric was able to get six point one million people to join his cause was that, uh, was through these sort of friends telling friends, telling friends and we at causes have made that incredibly easy. And so for a lot of organizations, the exciting part is that as you get your supporters to take one of these actions, you know, you’ll be, you know, start telling your usual people about this. So whether it’s sending an email to your email lists are posting it to your facebook page or twitter what’s exciting is that when your supporters take this action, they are automatically going to be spreading it to their friends and their networks, and so we’re seeing about a thirty two, fifty percent pick up on different campaigns. You’re going to get fifty percent more people way actually just had a campaign that ran on causes that got forty seven percent of the people who came in through ah, take their campaign kayman just threw this facebook and agree. Agent susan gordon is the director of non-profit services at causes dot com and that’s, the site we’re talking about how robust, rich, easy, simple and this is all free, right? There’s, no charge to charities or individual activists. Exactly there’s absolutely no charge. You can create as many of these campaigns as you like, and all of these tools, they’re free, okay, let’s say a little bit about fund-raising campaigns, that’s one of your nine action action possibilities what what? What can be done around fund-raising specifically, of course, i want listeners to understand the latter of engagement that susan talked about his ultimately, the hope is that this will lead to fund-raising but there’s a lot of richness to be gained and shared before you get too fund-raising but but, susan, what if somebody wants tohave specifically, a fundraising campaign on causes dot com absolutely fund-raising is an incredibly important part of what we what we do on causes, and we’ve spent a lot of resources over the past couple years trying to plug these types of campaigns on make him work for fund-raising so when someone donates on causes, how do their friends see it? How did they ask their friends to donate as well? And how did they we create a rich sort of social experience around donating to ah, to a non-profit so they’re there to ways that we’ve done that. The first one is that a fundraising campaign is one of our non nine action types, so as i was saying you can, you know, post a quiz and then post a pledge and then post a fund-raising project, and so we created a really beautiful online page where you can add media, so photos and videos about what you’re raising money for. You can add donorsearch choices that say, you know, twenty five dollars, will send a kid to school for two months, you can sort of create a really great story around what it is that you’re funding. You could also absolutely raise money for unrestricted funds, which is, you know, just put up, please donate to our non-profit and add photos and videos of what you d’oh so they could be restricted funds or not, unrestricted funds it’s completely up to you, but you can tell a story about what they’re what you’re raising money for and put it up right on your cause with these different types of action campaigns, and you can create a campaign where you can, where the fund-raising element of it is that sort of where you’re leading to the whole time and, you know, it creates a great online page for you to send people to donate when they donate we’ve got a bunch of really neat things you can upload a thank you video. We send them a thank you note right away. We use network for good to process our donations and so they’ll get a tax receipt right away. There’s a four point, five percent processing see from network for good causes doesn’t take anything on top of that, but basically network for goodwill. Then send your organization a checker and electronic funds transfer once a month. And so it’s. Totally seamless. You’ll just get that check once a month with all of the donations that come in through causes. Okay, okay. We don’t have only two minutes left before we have to. We have to wrap up. I saw. Donate your birthday on the site. What is that? Yes. So if you go toe wishes, dot causes dot com that is are what we call wishes which our personal fund-raising pages. So, uh, if you as an organization are looking for ways and easy way to ask your supporters toe, give them an online tool that they can fundraise for you. Causes is an incredibly powerful tool to use for that. We’ve had people, you know, regular. People just supporters of a non-profit raise, you know, many thousands of dollars for organizations so they can first they pick an event, so if it’s their birthday, if they’re doing a run or a walk, if they’re getting married, if they’re doing ah ah memorial for someone or just any reason they can create a personal fund-raising page, they can tell their friends and family or even upload a video explaining why they’re raising money for this organization and then individuals can donate and we’ve plugged in a bunch of facebook and twitter integrations and so that they can then tell their friends, hey, my friends raising money for this cause it’s really great on and help you do your fund-raising there’s also meet little features like cards where when someone donates, they can make you a card on right on that page tell you, good job for raising money. You’re happy birthday right on that page on, and it basically makes it a really easy way for your supporters to gather donations for your organization and so you can send anyone toe wishes dot causes dot com they just create that page, select your non-profit is what they’re raising money for and then they’ve got this great parents to send people to to fundrasing, the site is, causes dot com. Because the things that the thing that work that pays my bills is consulting, which i didn’t mention. I do that too, but all this other content that i produced, why do i do it? That’s? Because there are two things that i believe very strongly on dh that is, first, that small and midsize charity’s need to be better that aaron a lot of things measuring impact and outcomes and delivering programs buy-in fund-raising, of course, um, in their human resource is work and the marketing, communications, et cetera. And so i i believe that there’s a need to be much better in all those areas. Ah, and others. And second that charity’s deserve help to be better. I know that you’re working incredibly hard and maybe understaffed, maybe under budgeted, underfunded. So i think you deserve the help that you need to be better and those two things together or what? Dr me too produce the content that i do. That is what i believe and that’s. What motivates me? She is a philanthropic psychologist. She’s been published in many journals, including experimental economics, economic journal, journal of marketing research and marketing science. Homework has also been covered in the new york times and the chronicle. Of philanthropy, and she is the author of the book fund-raising principles and practice, which is available at amazon dot com, and i’m very pleased that her research in her work brings to the show welcome, jim. Thank you. We’re talking about five words to better fund-raising what was the research that we’re talking about? Uh, it’s, uh, when we study how prime ing people’s idea of more identity come potentially influence, how they give on day when we say more identity, really, what we mend is how carrying kind, compassionate, helpful and friendly people think they are, okay? They’re us interesting. Their moral identity. Yeah. Okay. That’s the that’s. The research will let, uh, what was specifically how did you conduct the research? So this is when during public radio stations on air front drive. I’m sure your listeners are quite familiar with this form of fund-raising this was bloomington bloomington public radio in indiana, right? Yeah, yeah. That steering our billings in radio on their front driving ah, november, where they’re deejays kind of inter interrupt the programming and say things like, you know, here is that i remember and if you could give us this amount and here’s the thank you gifts so people call in and then half of the people who call in they are asked, you know, how are you a newer renew a member of the station? And then they’re thanked for either becoming or being a member of the station and the other half of the donors when they call in there asked exactly the same question, but when there are thanked there think for being kind and carrying member of the station were becoming a helpful and friendly member of the station. Schnoll okay, so what we found is that when people are think with those moral adjective, then they increase their giving, but this is only significant with female, but not mayo donors. Okay, let’s, let’s, be very clear. What are the five words that you used in your research is caring, compassionate, kind, friendly and helpful. Okay, that actually reminds me of the used to be a boy scout. I still have an eagle scout kayman eagle scout. This reminds me of if i didn’t mention i’m an eagle scout thiss reminds me of the scout law you didn’t know the boy scout law, probably unless you have boys. Trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean and reverent. So you’ve got you’ve got two or three of those in there? Yeah. Did you? Did you derive your your moral adjectives from the boy scout oath? I scott law. No law, not the oath. That’s, this is the law. Pardon me. This? Sure. Some off of the participants that participated in the orange inal study where these adjectives war generated they were members of the boy kapin. Okay, well, there could be some overlap, but we don’t know if that’s cause and effect that’s just that could just be coincidental. There were hundreds of people who were asked to list all possible adjectives they can possibly use to describe any moral person. And then we could. And the researchers off that really orange? No study collected the most often used adjectives by most people. Okay, i see. Those are the adjective that’s. How you came up with your caring, compassionate, friendly kind and helpful. You okay? Let’s. See, the the research is on ly, but only impacts females. Not so men are not influenced by the moral adjectives. Not the set that we not these five. Hopefully, they’re influenced by the scout law if their boy scouts, because otherwise it’s just don’t be a scout if you’re not going. Teo, reverent and helpful and courteous and kind and cheerful. Cheerful. So, um, but women are the majority of donors, isn’t that right? Yes. Two thirds ofthe most non-profit donors are female donors. Okay, so so using your research, we can impact two thirds of the giving population. Yeah, okay, so these people were thanked using one of the moral adjectives, but they hadn’t, but they hadn’t made their gift yet. So what were they thanked for? They were thanks for calling. Uh, as soon as they were called in. As soon as they call in there. Asked whether they want to be a new member ization or their existing member nation and there, thanks for either becoming a new member or being a member. Okay, so you thank for either being becoming or being a member or you thank for being or becoming a caring, compassionate, etcetera number. Ok, yeah. So do we know whether this applies to written solicitations? Well, we’re we’re currently testing different forms of recon communication and what we do there is you know, you mean one of the key things if people were to apply this technique is not the fact that, you know, they need to write down this five wars, but they need to engage people in thinking about these words. And i think one of the main reasons why our research turned out in the way that it did is because people were asked to answer a question first and that they’re thinking in response to what they think they are already. So when we apply these techniques in return context, what we had to ask people to do is not just to have kind carrying floating everywhere in the letter, but instead only on the renewal forms we want people to say i and then people find their name like gen shang, i wanted to give this much right. And then when i signed my gen shang am finding on those words you’re signing on those words what do you mean? Like they’re the words are below the below the line where you put your name? The words are actually in the in the box, in the background of that box where i started my name. Oh so there’s sort of shaded in the background exact, like a like a watermark. That’s, right? Ok, but this is research. You’re just testing this. You don’t have results from from this written written test yet. Well, actually, we we dio look at me. I’m way behind. Okay, but the result is that, you know, people see exactly the same thing. And half of the people are asked to print their name, almost words. And the other half, i asked to sign their name on those words, and we found a marginally statistically significant results. Where if people signed their name, they give more than if they printed their name on those words. Very interesting. But did you also did you also test that against there? Not being any words. Yes, it’s hyre than not having anymore. Okay, definitely. Just making that clear. Okay. Yeah. Okay, yeah, but but what’s important there is that when people sign their names, they’re more active in thinking about their identity, who they are. But when they simply print, they don’t think about being both kind and caring compassion. People asked much as if they signed that almost stamp their own it and the answer those words very interesting. That is very interesting. So so what’s really driving the effect we think at this point, it’s not necessarily that non-profit professionals know about those words, but they have to think of ways to tap into people’s sense of who they are and then leads those central sons of who they are into those morally, you know, promoted kind of product. What kind of increase in fund-raising did you see in your research? Well, in the first study, it was a ten percent increase in female donor, um and that’s average, you have to say about eighty seven dollars, in the control group where people are simply think and is about one hundred when people are thanked with moral awards and in this direct meaning that we just had it tested it’s about, like a five percent increase, they’re the average e-giving is much smaller because his christmas appeal so the average amount is like thirteen pounds and, um, you know, eighteen dollars, but then the the fact is about fifty upleaf about twenty dollars, okay? And also with women in the only only only an increase for women in the in the writing or that does that apply to men also in the written form that that that that’s okay, so men are not immoral? No, no, at least not in a written sense. Yeah, by no means that i think i’m just extrapolated i’m just taking a natural sametz seems like a natural conclusion for your research is that men in conversation are immoral. Well, not that that wouldn’t be how i know i know what i hope not know you’re. There is a more different it’s, a very different sense of saying something versus we were just not successful in bringing their own sense of morality to the front. So diplomats make a decision such a diplomatic, academic that’s beautiful, but really mentally moral no, of course, that’s an irrational conclusion. I really i think it is our failure on our part. So what we actually would like to test in the future is tap into moral values that male might be more likely to engage in, like, responsible, loyal, strong take leadership pride. Yeah, i think you’re i think you’re wasting your time with those just bein sports and cars i think is and booze, i think that’s where you really should be starting, you know, have a little budweiser icon that people sign and watermark, that people sign over that will that’s going to get that anheuser busch logo. You know those of this where you want to be, corvettes, you know, sign your name over this watermark of a corvette that will, i think, that’s, where you’re going to see market market change in mark changing giving, we need to take a break right now. Jenn, you are a philanthropic psychologist. What is that? Yeah, well, it’s, i’m interested in studying why people do philanthropy and what, uh, doing a philosophy might do to their own life. You know what it might do to their own, like how it makes them feel how it makes them feel. How does that help them discover who they are defined their meaning in life? Okay. And it’s, not a field i’m acquainted with so hominy philanthropic psychologists are there. Well, i only know one of me, but i’m sure they’re so yeah, you had some of these. Have you had some campaign to systematically eliminate all the other philanthropic psychologists? Well, actually, i haven’t done so because i would rather their mohr. Okay, you’re not the violent academic at that. Maybe you were the the one percent violence academic, but that’s, not you. No, i was just you know, i was the first graduate of philanthropic phd from the canal philanthropy. In that sense, it’s, because the field didn’t exist aren’t annoying. Okay, out of the five people that we graduated already from that program, i was the only one who had a psychology background. Okay, yeah. There’s running through your research and you’ve mentioned it just obliquely a few times. I want to spend a little time on it is feeling better, feeling better about giving and and reinforcing one’s beliefs about themselves. So say, say so let’s talk about that. Yeah. So, for example, in this somewhere, i didn’t e-giving research what we did after we did. The experiment on the air is we send donorsearch survey and we asked them on the scale one tonight. How? Carrying. Actually, you think you are and then people silk road number like seven. And then we ask them, i’m on a scale of one tonight. How ideally would you like to become caring? And then people probably circle my i really, really want to become really, really caring. And then what we did is we calculate the difference between the two each we call more identities discrepancy. And then we link this number. Teo the same person’s contribution history to the same radio station. And what we found is that the more females give the smaller. This gap is between their actual and their ideal morally identity. But this relationship does not. Exist for males. So what this means is that the act of giving itself actually can potentially help female donors to rich. They’re more ideals and that’s. Great. Yes. To teo, get closer to what they believe of themselves already. Right? Exactly. Okay. Yeah. Yeah. Um, again, men out. Liars. You know, they don’t care how they feel. They don’t. They don’t have feelings. I don’t know what they’re thinking. They don’t know what they’re not giving that it’s. Unbelievable. What? What a disappointing gender. Well, what they’re thinking, what they’re giving couldn’t really be measured with the set for measurements we have. So i think the next step in my research is trying to find ways where we can find what men are thinking. Right? Well, there’s the cars and sports and booze that you know it’s. Okay, um, let’s. See? So this is academic research that can be immediately applied. And tha the telemarketing part, right? I mean, so is there any reason to think that if if the organization is calling out that there would be any different result? Uh, no, actually, we way are currently conducting any marketing way. I don’t have the results yet. Okay? But because we don’t think there’s any reason why it wouldn’t work so you could be calling out and thanking someone for thank someone for having been a a friendly or kind or helpful donorsearch in the past. And would you consider giving this year? Is that does that? Does that sound right to you? Yeah. Yeah, but what they need to do is they make sure that thing is somehow linked two people’s sense of their donation or they’re being a donor. And that, i think, needs to be set right before they asked people to give again. Oh, right before. Okay. All right. Before you right at the beginning of the park. Or, you know, without knowing anything about the donor without asking them to at least answer one question to engage. Ok. Ok. So a little engagement, but then right before the ask this this thanking right? Using one of the five moral adjectives two out of using two. Okay. Oh, excellent. All right, so you have to use two of the five? Yeah. We never tested just one because we be virality is a complicated constructs he need, you know, multiple kind of ways to get to it, excellent. Okay, so it’s friendly and kind or whatever. Yeah, any two out of five, you know, to avoid driving, okay, and i’m going to say them again. Okay, i understand i’m going to say them again one more time. Caring, compassionate, friendly, kind, helpful. Do not do not go to the scout law, because it will lead you astray. They’ll beam, or that aren’t on the list that then then r this is sort of suggesting that, you know, we should be not so reliant on anecdotes and tales of what good fund-raising is. But try to rely on hard research as much as possible. Yes, definitely. Absolutely. Teo, any coast don’t make a piece of research. Okay. Okay. Where can people learn more about your research? Well, they can first search jin xiang on the web, and the first link comes up. Should be my website. All my published papers are on there.
