Oh, i hope you were with me last week. I’d suffer ortho static hypertension if i were forced to endure the knowledge that you had missed, i had a great interview, but i didn’t get the job, suzanne felder, a consultant in outplacement at lee hecht harrison, said there’s more to getting a job than having a good resume and interview, we talked about research panel interviews, dodging the salary question and what to do in the last thirty minutes before your interview and storytelling. Now we have the interview on giving tuesday recorded it bb con here is that welcome to tony martignetti non-profit radio coverage of bb khan twenty thirteen, where outside washington dc and national harbor, maryland at the gaylord convention center with me are rachel hutchisson and anastasia dellaccio we’re talking today about giving tuesday. Rachel is director of corporate citizenship and philanthropy for blackbaud and anesthesia is outreach and special initiatives officer for the united nations foundation. Ladies, welcome to the show, we’re having our pleasure to have you, rachel let’s, start with you. What is giving tuesday e-giving tuesday is a wonderful movement. That’s really designed to get everyone individuals, organizations and businesses involved in giving back anastacia can give you a lot better detail, but the whole idea is that if we can have black friday and cyber monday, two days committed to shopping, then we need to have giving tuesday, which is the opening day of the giving season committed to giving back. Ok, when is that? It is december third, which for people in the u s is the tuesday immediately following thanksgiving. Okay, how did e-giving tuesday come about? Where is it from? On stage? You want to be sure? So you know what rachel said earlier? You know, you have these two days after thanksgiving that are really about shopping and commerce and buying presents for people, which is great it’s great it’s, great for the economy, but we wanted teo and matthew bishop and henry tim’s of the the ninety second street. Why i kind of came up with this idea that it’s important to bring personal philanthropy and philanthropy and giving and volunteerism back into the holiday. Season back into the holiday spirit. You know, a lot of a lot of people do a lot of there there giving it the end of the year on dh it’s kind of thought about is an afterthought. So why not preempt that and use it as a way to open up the holiday season by giving back a little bit as well. So the idea this this whole idea came about and you know it, it’s just a way, teo, to really be able to bring people together on one day which this year’s december third mark your calendars. It was a way to unite people all around the world about philanthropy and giving back, and you don’t have to just donate. You can donate, which is great for your favorite cause. You can you can volunteer. You can work at a food bank. You could do a clothing drive or you, khun, go on to some websites of a lot of our great partners like unicef and purchase wonderful gifts that also give back at the same time. Okay, there’s a way for non-profits to take part in giving tuesday to promote it to their constituents. What can? They do? Yeah, absolutely. I mean, giving tuesday is really just there is a platform for good essentially it’s a megaphone for for the great work that people are already planning. So as a non-profit you, khun join and you could just plan to do some sort of online fund raiser, you know, offline fundraiser, whatever it is that you want to do to be able to highlight, you know, you’re giving programming that you probably already have planned around the holidays anyway. You can also be a corporation or a small business or an individual, and just plan something that would benefit a five a one c three or you could just volunteering your time and and and host of fund-raising yourself or do a book driver, you know, work with your kids to clean up a local park. It’s it’s kind of for anyone it’s it’s an absolute no barrier entry there’s no cost for entry. The only benefit is is that it’s a great way to be able to highlight your work. Rachel, how did well, how long have we had? E-giving tuesday’s e-giving tuesday. Launched last year. If this is the second year on blackbaud is very excited to be both a founding partner working to convey and help share the love, help everyone get involved in the movement and then also to do some very specific things ourselves. The whole goal for us is that we believe in philanthropy, we believe in giving, and we would love to see that universe of people who are giving and serving be bigger and giving tuesday is away, particularly through social media, to reach people who are maybe not engaging in the world of philanthropy. It amplifies it so it the goal is to try to reach deeper into the audience. Okay, why don’t we talk a little about what blackbaud is doing as a founding member of e-giving tuesday? Sure, so we have a lot of things planned. It blackbaud forgiving tuesday, and our philosophy comes from trying to reach all the different audiences that we work with, so that will be important for our listeners, some of whom are blackbaud clients, customers, some or not, but our audience is small and midsize non-profits right, so it’s really for anybody, whether you’re thinking about you as an individual person, whether you’re thinking about you working within your non-profit but first and foremost, we want to share the news about e-giving tuesday with a non-profit market just so they’re aware of it and they have an opportunity to engage, we’re working specifically to share the news with our customer base here it bb khan and also very specifically we’re hosting a three part webinar siri’s the tuesdays leading up to giving tuesday in november and it’s about year and fund-raising because people often ask, well, what’s giving tuesday it’s just a day, but what it is it’s an opportunity to really amplify what you’re doing and to weave it into the very, very important year and fund-raising plans that you have, so we have matthew bishop from the economist henry tim’s from the ninety second street y and adam hers from gentleman joining us on those shows and then different organizations like the san diego zoo talking about this is what we do for year on fund-raising and this is how we use giving tuesday to help with that because it’s, not something you really just duitz completely in a silo, so we’re doing it this siri’s to help people understand help non-profits understand what they may do. Another audience that we really care about is our employees so blackbaud has twenty, seven hundred employees, eighty one percent of them volunteer their really engaged and so we’re looking to them and saying us people have an opportunity to say this is what i’m passionate about take a picture of it, put it on instagram, we’re going to scroll it on our website, you know, just tell us how you choose personally to give back so those are a couple small to midsize businesses, another were a midsize business, so we do. I run corporate citizenship in philanthropy, and we do a lot of things to give back to the world, and one of the things i’ve observed is that businesses really do want to engage in their community, and often they don’t really know how to strategically think about it. So on giving tuesday this year, we’re launching business doing good dot com, and it is a resource for small to mid size businesses tto learn about how they kind of build that give back function into their business. Where will we find the weapon? Okay? And of course they’re free, right? Absolutely free it’s thought leadership, it’s it’s educational content just to help anybody who is interested in a station you have ah, let’s, talk a little about some ideas that non-profits might used t engage. I mean, i know you said wide open really no barriers, but let’s, get into some specifics you know organizations are doing or that you think could be really useful. Sure, i’d love to highlight some case studies of some of our great partners. And i just also want to know at this point where we’re at about twenty, seven hundred partners, which is where we were when we finished last year. So quite a big feet, people are, you know, jumping on the bandwagon and that’s great. But i think part of what blackbaud is doing, which is really interesting is that a lot of our partners came to us after and i said, how can i maximize my e-giving strategy this year. How can i stand out from the crowd? And and so, you know, there’s, a lot of great organizations, the u s hockey foundation is going to be drawing attention to fund-raising of fans by creating an interactive map. And different states are going to turn colors red, white and blue according to how much money has been raised which is a really interactive way to engage your donor base and, you know, engaged more of a donor base who want to see thes interactive and the state’s changed colors. So about that that’s that’s kind of it also makes it a competition. Absolutely. You england states so i could see maybe competing against each other. The the four corner states out in the west might be competing. Okay, friendly state competition. Okay, us airways. They’re going to be activating their miles for hope programme making sort of a mile matching campaign. Discover is going, teo, say a lot more about the mile matching campaign. Yeah, so as people fly there, going to be donating money back-up teo their cause okay, discover is going to be doing a two percent match program of donations and they’re also doing an employee activation campaign, which is great because i think when you’re thinking about corporate, you can give back, you know, to the causes that you’re partnering with, but it’s also great to be thinking about how can you activate your own employee base last year for the u n foundation? You know, beyond having our various campaigns girl up, shot at life, nothing but not doing their own fund-raising initiatives as well. Well, what was the last one? Nothing, but nothing but nets and shot at life. We had a really clever employee activation where we’re never allowed to wear jeans, and if we donated and show that we donated to any cause that we wanted to, we were allowed to wear jeans for the day. So for us, that was like a big deal, and one day it was just giving tuesday only about a week. I mean, you’re the week leading up or something. Now only one day maybe you give every single day leading up. You know, i’ll have to bring that strict there the u n foundation one day. Okay. Talking alternative radio twenty four hours a day. Some other ideas yuen women is going to be kind of bridging the gap between the international day of eliminating violence against women and international human rights day and since it’s, it falls right e-giving tuesday falls right in the center there going to be doing a huge online campaign around that i’m with a lot of creative steps, so definitely encourage people to look out for that. Um, i know a small charter school in washington, d c called creative minds international, they’re going to be working with a lot of other small organizations to put together and in person fund-raising event, which will be a really exciting way to kind of bring people in. And, you know, you talk a lot about with giving tuesday the whole offline aspect of, you know, really bringing people together around a specific day, combined with the online aspect of taking the social media to really make an impact kind of white, much wider than your community. Another great thing that we’re really excited about this year is that last year, at the end of giving tuesday, we had countries writing us and tweeting us, saying, how can we take this beyond the us. How can we how can we take this to our own country? So we’re going to see a lot of giving tuesday going global, which is super exciting? We really encourage, you know, organizations and countries at this point to take our logo and personalize it and make it their own. So we’re seeing giving tuesday australia, canada, singapore, mexico, england, it’s going to be really cool any other the asian countries we have a lot of listeners in korea, china, japan, any of those, you know, and nobody, nobody that we’ve had officially sign up per se doesn’t mean the conversation’s aren’t happening, and obviously we can’t manage the world and what we’re seeing actually another really cool thing that’s happening is tthe e u n u n d p is going to come on as a partner, um, and and that’s going to be a really great way to take this into some of the most remote communities in the world, so we’ll definitely see a lot of asia, but, you know, we can’t kind of personalize and cultural eyes the messaging for the world from a u s perspective, so i think it’s really important to bring in those cultural sensitivities and, you know, as as e-giving tuesday’s does start to move in asia, you know, people don’t give in the same way all over the world and people don’t, you know, and even just saying, give around the holidays? Well, in england, the holidays are when you take up and go on vacation. So, you know, it’s very important that each country takes the messaging and makes it their own, and and i’m really excited to see that that this is going to become a global time when the world can come together and really move the dial on giving rachel so it looked like you wanted to add something more about the international expansion. No, i was just thinking, i know a f p international, the association of fund-raising professionals is working with isn’t imagine canada in canada to take it across canada, and the thing that, you know, i’m sitting here nodding about is that that e-giving tuesday is a movement it’s, not something that’s bound by geographical borders, and so of course it should be everywhere, and i love the fact that it is up to each person. Organization or company that engages toe add their meaning to what giving tuesday means to them. So it really gives them a way to amplify our give voice to what they believe, what they’re passionate about, and that makes it i think, easier to translate it into other cultures. Sure, in the us, we think of it, you know, it’s predicated on these days following thanksgiving, us thanksgiving, but it’s a concept that’s so easy to grasp. Now i have heard some hyre maybe maybe criticism or just really questioning of e-giving tuesday, people not really seeing the the reason other than it’s just a day in the season, not not seeing the why, why it’s then versus some other time any what do you hear challenges of the concept? And and i guess they were also questioning what’s the impact what’s actually getting done. I’m stage, you’re sure? Well, you know, i think if you look at the commerce state, you know, you have sales around president’s day you have sales around labor day, so it’s something that happens perennially so why can’t give it? You know, people before e-giving tuesday would just give it the end of the year so now we have giving tuesday and hopefully, you know, maybe people think to give every tuesday or the think to give every day, but what it is is a call to action and it’s just a time to bring everyone together. And i mean, even i guess if you’re just thinking of the perspective from the united states, really, at the end of the day, we’ve got these cybermonday black friday, two days dedicated to shopping and that’s, fine, but, you know, the holidays are about giving and giving back and thinking about people who are not as fortunate as as all of us, and if we can create a marketing campaign and, ah, an online campaign around just giving in philanthropy, why not? I don’t think it’s a bad thing at all, i think it’s an all inclusive thing, and we’re there, you know, not there’s, no there’s, no payment to be a partner, anyone can be a partner. My job at the u n foundation and is part of the giving tuesday campaign is really to just be a megaphone for the world and so highly what other people are doing to do good in the world and give back and so i think, it’s a fantastic rachel, do you want to say something to the people who question e-giving tuesday? Well, i think it’s a valid question, i mean, here we are in a sector that’s very concerned based on donor interest in looking at the impact of a gift, and we want to show data that shows that we’re we’re moving things in the right direction. It’s it’s a hard thing to do, you know, on a grand scale when you’ve got all of these organizations do in people doing their individual things to know exactly how much has changed, but one of the things that blackbaud is doing as a partner and we we did this last year, we’re doing it again this year is that we host a lot of data, so we manage a lot of non-profit status, so we will look at how much has brought in on giving tuesday, how much is processed through our systems and fund-raising and we will look at that same day so many days after thanksgiving the previous year, and we’ll say, we can’t tell you that it was up by x percent or down or the same or whatever it is, and then then we’ll have to look at the end of the year and say, well, what did your end do? Because maybe it’s just people are giving earlier, you know? So it’s a it’s a data analysis question, but we are going to have some data that shows what did it actually as a proxy, what did it affect that day? Yeah, yeah, and i would like to add, actually, that according to blackbaud last year, online giving actually increased fifty three percent in one day and the previous from the previous day. Yeah, this year and and, you know, we’re managing and paying close attention to a lot of real time data because a lot of people, because it was such an online, heavy campaign, you know, people tweeting and instagramming the results, so we’re looking at actual real time data people saying, you know, by eleven o’clock oh, we’re now up to twenty thousand dollars and by two o’clock oh, we’re now up to forty thousand dollars, so you know, i have i have pages and pages of these tweets that i copied and pasted and collected a czar. Own just general, you know, real time reporting data. And, you know, it did move the needle for a lot of people for sure. Where is the site, rachel? Where waken is their eyes, their site where we can see the twenty, seven hundred partners so far that stasia mentioned it’s e-giving tuesday dot orc. Okay, okay. Excellent. And that’s, where somebody would go if they would like to become involved either at the charitable level. I mean, with non-profit level charity level as an individual about for ah, company. Same same thing e-giving tuesday, dot organs for individuals, companies. Non-profits whoever wants to get involved and, you know, the folks that giving tuesday are great. If you’re interested in getting involved in you, you need a little bit of more information, you know, just call them, talk to them and it’s about bringing more people into the circle. Go ahead. And in addition, you know on our website there’s there’s a lot of great information. It and including some great tool kits which have everything from sample press releases. If you want to pitch your own local media, tio all of the logo’s ideas just kind of the whole you know, q and i obviously so anyone who’s interested can download the tool kit, you know, you just have to sign up kind of right, you know, two or three sentences on what your plans are. I think that the people who also gained the most put in the most and you know, where there is a resource. So if you want to write block posts for us god, if you’re last year we were we were we were really lucky we had the cities of philadelphia and los angeles and chicago and new york actually proclaimed giving tuesday in their cities. So we’re encouraging people to reach out to your local cities and get a proclamation. We have tool kits for that, you know, there’s many ways that you could get involved. We also, you know, probate what rachel said before it’s a movement and what made it so successful last year was we put together a whole group of people caught our social media ambassadors, which are just individuals who really wanted to get more involved in spreading the word, and we have weekly and bi weekly calls to action. We have google plus hangouts we have. Our blogged, you know, write us if you want to if you wantto do a block post for us, fine, if you want to host a google plus, hang out on on giving or small business and giving our or csr whatever it is we’ll support that will amplify it. You know, whatever you want to put in will be there to make sure that your strategy is highlighted and that you can maximize your results for giving tuesday this year. Okay, assume on twitter the hashtag is giving today it is and i was just going to mention that e-giving tuesday hashtag isn’t just active on and around giving tuesday, it’s got people tweeting, you know, all the time i have a column in my tweetdeck e-giving tuesday and i watch it every day and people are sharing their stories about the pledges they’re making the success that they’re seeing and their excitement and it he you see these things from australia and other places and you can almost watch how it’s spreading by watching the twitter feed rachel, we have another five minutes or so. What more would you like to say that i haven’t asked you about? E-giving tuesday well, you know, personally giving tuesday is important to me because a lot of the things in the you know, e-giving world, they’re kind of parameters about how you have to engage and what size company you are or what size non-profit you are whether you have a lot of infrastructure, so i love that it’s something that’s really based on enthusiasm and passion, and that was really also the impetus behind the site that we’re launching business, doing good dot com that that a lot of businesses that resource is that are available to them to build giveback programs are really aimed for fortune five hundred companies, you know, the conferences, the resource is the studies and so as a mid sized business blackbaud very interested in helping other other organizations because seventy nine percent of the people in the us who work for business work for small to midsize business, and so we want to help those businesses in all those many communities understand that they can have a really intentional way tto handle something that can sometimes be a problem, you know, people coming to them and asking them for gifts and asking them for products and and how they can not only handle it, but then also make it something very exciting. Um, it’s something that’s important to their employees, and we’re just trying to take that model of employee engagement and excitement and passion for service that we have a blackbaud and taking it and sharing it with so many other people who are so interested in that as well and making it something doable. So i’m personally very excited about that launch and what better day to launch it on giving tuesday? So we’re looking forward to december third excellent anastacia anything you want to leave us with a couple minutes? I’m so excited, it’s going global, you know, i work with the u n foundation, so for me to be able to see philanthropy kind of going into the hands of the world is very exciting thing, and i’m just i’m just proud to be part of this. Time for tony’s take two this week, i blogged can plan giving prospects reply on your reply card as you do your u n mailings, i hope you will make sure that your planned e-giving reply cards are user friendly for your older planned e-giving prospects. We’re talking about folks in their seventies, eighties nineties. If you’re asking them to fill in information like their name, their email address, mailing address, there needs to be enough space for them to run right on the reply card because those older hands can have arthritis or have other pain or just be shaky for some reason. So you need me to make sure you have lots of vertical and horizontal space on your reply card so people can write in that space, and that means lots of space between the lines and make sure that the lines are long enough. If people can’t use your reply card because it’s too small, then what would you expect is gonna happen? They are probably not going to pick up the phone to call you there, probably going toe throw the reply card away and you will lose a touchpoint and you’ll never know where. Welcome back. Thanks for having me back. It’s. Always a pleasure. Um, you know about your before we dive in about tony take to that is a huge pet people for me. Because i i am i have no arthritis, at least yet. Knock on wood in my hand. I think that i am able to write pretty small, but i can never fit my name or my email or anything on those cards. And sometimes i feel like okay, well, i actually give you money now or i can’t, you know, sign up on your letter or sign your petition because i can’t write my name in there. Yeah, just don’t give enough space and opportunity, okay? I thank you. Thank you very much. Let’s, talk a little about giving tuesday just just briefly, because that was our last segment. Yeah. What are you? What are you seeing around giving tuesday? You know, i think it’s i mean there’s a lot more excitement this year of many more organizations are going to be participating, which i think is great because if you have an opportunity to kind of jump on existing excitement or passion, or put your throw your name in on a large scale marketing effort than great, go for it. But a lot of questions are coming at least tacit and ten, similar to the questions that we see from organise a when they’re participating in a e-giving day that maybe their, you know, their state or their region has organized e-giving day where? What? What do we adapted? Judith do if a bunch of people that we don’t know find us through this effort or come, you know, out of the woodwork and don’t make for the mm how do we keep them engaged? What are we supposed to? Do with afterwards because for many organizations participating in giving tuesday, they’re not doing that in lieu of a year end kapin campaign. They’re just kind of launching their year in campaign at that point. Well, we know not burn those do people out, but i immediately then saying, awesome, you’ve donated now you’re part of our year in campaign and getting all these emails to keep giving when maybe you’re a brand new person. Um, so those are those are the questions, but for us, you know, the answers of the recommendations are similar, too, like we do when when states have e-giving they or just general best practice for fund-raising an engagement, and that is you have to be segmenting those people you need tio have ah away a system to save people came in. This is their very first time ever donating to us. Maybe they hadn’t even been really on your list, but, you know, they’re friends had promoted you or something like that kick those people into a separate email campaign, so they’re not necessarily a meeting bombarded with give five more times before the end of the year, but, you know, have a chance. To get to know you learn more about the work, figure out why it was that they donated the first time the men eat them towards, you know, another gift in the future versus automatically treating everyone on your list. It’s very good that that non-profits air thinking about what they’re follow-up is going to be what their engagement strategy is going to be for the people who might join them on giving tuesday. That’s very encouraging, yes, for sure, but i think it’s because they know that that’s the critical piece, right, whether it’s engagement with an advocacy tilt or engagement with fund-raising killed it’s be more or less easy to go out there and a big, splashy campaign and get a lot of, you know, time, engagements that peace that is most critical is that third where people really air like, okay, great. Now i’m now i’m going to follow this organization. It wasn’t just a one time my friend asked me to give it was this big bang, and i gave five dollars, like, i’m going to give five dollars every month now or whatever that is so realizing that it isn’t just great, how do we? Get that second and third and fourth engagement that has to come through a plan, and you have to have a strategy well ahead of time so that you can segment them out or know what kind of mess did you want to follow up with? We know that amy is breaking up a little bit, amy, you probably can’t hear, but i know she’s on skype this this month, andi it’s not i’m not on skype or you’re not my normal, you know, you are it’s a little it’s a little break up. Not that we can’t understand, you know, but like, ah, what are those things called syllables? A syllable drops out every every couple of words. It’s, it’s really? Just about that. So i will not move or gesture to wildly in case it is interfering with the phone line. Okay, actually, that last sentence was just perfect. So whatever you did, whatever operation you’re in, one leg on the ground and your left hand on your head on your right hand holding your nose don’t move. All right, okay. Facebook reach. I’m seeing a lot of non-profits concerned about facebook reach dropping let’s first. Define what? Reach let’s, find a couple terms. First, what’s reach. Okay, great. I was worried when you said let’s, plant a couple terms. You were going to start with facebook, so waken. Start with what’s. Reach easily on that is a ever changing, algorithm based metric. So facebook has all kinds of individual components that go into this massive algorithm to output this one magical, mystical number called reach and it’s. It’s it’s a moving target for many organizations and recently, as they did a bunch of components in that depends, you know how they’re going to allow your post tohave organization there’s all different kinds of things happening with their content with exgagement because ultimately people can’t engage with a post that never showed up at his feet or you know that they never got to see right, and we’re talking now about reach this is on your not your personal pages is your organization page that’s where pedrie, exactly. So not your own profile when you log in, but if you manage a page, you’ll see the real ok, you mentioned engagement and, you know, i’m quick to put you in jargon jail, but let’s define engagement, so engagement in this sense as faras the pieces that are getting influence reached those pieces that fall into that huge algorithm that facebook’s using to determine if they push your post out or not, you know who gets to see it are a couple pieces that i’m calling engagement because they like the bucket term of people liked it, or they commented, or they shared, you know, they interacted with that. Post and the more that that happens, the more that they assume people to see that post and the further they push it, so the more reach it gets, okay, that makes sense to me that makes sense. Now, the number of factors i saw something on the order of over one hundred thousand variables going into this reach algorithm, yeah, merry myth, who is a great social media blogger resource, if you don’t know mary-jo myth she did post that there’s, you know, over one hundred thousand components to that algorithm to determine in just what you know who is going to see it or how far their reach is going tio going to go, you know, facebook’s determining that i have no o stand evidence to say yes or no on that number, but in serious, i totally believe that because the pieces that are going into it things like when was the last time i interacted with that pidge and if it was a year ago there, you know, facebook is a men that i’m not interested in seeing the updates from that page who but there’s a lot of catch twenty two in the algorithm because maybe i haven’t seen the pages updates in the air because facebook didn’t show me the update in here that’s why i haven’t seen them on dh so some of those pieces, even though they sound like catch twenty two’s within the facebook system organisations have the opportunity to try and disrupt that that catch twenty two by, you know, if you have post that you you say you posted a photo on your facebook page to get people to answer and and vote on something who, you know, whatever your post, maybe and then you have it on your blawg. Or maybe you put it in your newsletter, don’t just point people back to your website, but say, you know, give them the choice to also click through facebook to vote on or, you know, comment or whatever that post may have been about so that way, even if those people in within facebook nitpick dated in a while, if they’ve through and now they’re on the page, you know, on facebook, great now facebook system is saying, you know, all these people checked out the page today looked at this post, we’re going to put them back at the top of the list of people who are interested in the page, you’re kind of, you know, trying to stop that. That inward inside facebook circle. That’s not catching those people. And we’re going to take a break a little early to give you a chance to call back. Hopefully we i think we have a little bit of connection this time and we’re going to continue our conversation on the facebook facebook page issue amy is is in ten seeing a difference in its page reach? Definitely. So i think this could be the first time in history in which cell phone has a better connection than death phones. However, it is better now. Okay, good. I’m glad it’s better on di will continue to not move out. Of this position. So julia and i do is one of the intense dafs we pulled up from different charts and graphs to try and compare about a month ago versus last month, where a lot of people have reported seen the difference kind of kick into their pages, and and ten similarly has seen a really big change and what’s interesting and both best cantor talking about her, you know, best cantor page versus personal profile as well as jeremy piven’s talking about the foundation centers pages, all reports a similar result that intent has seen, which is overall the average. You know, if you’re just looking at everything taken into one big bucket, the average reach for the engagement so things in your brain begins, i thought the same, but when you look at it more post by post here, granular levels it’s one thing that huge, and then the rest is well below normal instead of having a little bit more middle of the way, and then everyone about something that doesn’t fit there’s something that maybe does a little bit worse. But now that the average is staying the same because one code out of many just get ready. Better than ever on then, all the rest, really low that’s, not that’s, not good, right? Because, you know, for many organizations, you may just be looking at the average and think, you know, we’re not impacted by these changes. But really, you’re just having one post that a lot of people saw the rest of really low and you’re missing out on, you know, bringing those other posts up, figuring out what was working about that one that did really well. So for us, what we’ve seen with pacific coast that have done you’re far better, like just to rattle off some members. You know, there was a couple pose, like one each day where that reach was three hundred and eighty, three hundred sixteen, five hundred and fifty. And then the next day, over two thousand years ago, out of nowhere. And so what is what’s unique about that one that had over two thousand? So the other ones all included either an image or a link, and again that’s, because even if you include a link it’s gonna pull in a one image from that, you know, web page from the source of the length, which traditionally, everyone, you know, that old baseball glove, those images make sure you have a picture or a link or something, but the one that had over two thousand, which just just a text post it just said my organization’s most important measure of success is blink, you know, prompt for people toe fill in the blank and, you know, have some conversation in the comments and that one did so much better again. Then you start looking through the previous week. Everything. Has a picture or a link, you know, anywhere between three hundred, one hundred as far as the reach and then oh, one that’s just attacks and it again nearly two thousand you and i probably read the same post by mary smith. And by the way, that’s m a r i smith, if you want, if you want to follow her, looking her her valuable information on facebook on her facebook page, i think you and i read the same the same article, she suggests that one of these among these new variables is what people are interacting with. Maur what type of post people are interacting more with whether it’s a kn image photo post or a strictly text based post yeah, and so part of that issue within, you know, within this algorithm and facebook trying to determine which post to show you justin it’s looking at time like when was the last time you engaged with this page or visited this page book is also looking at when you did engage what kind of post was it and catch twenty two with that? Is that maybe you, you know, filled in the blank on that status? Update that we posted and now the catch twenty two is it things that’s all you want, so you’re kind of locked in to seeing those times of posts a while? Maybe you like the phone? Oh, that we posted will grace now you’re just going to be shown photos so we get that opportunity to keep mixing it up. But again, if people have been kind of locked in within facebook, you don’t have to point them to it from a different source that they, you know, they can click in and get back to the page. All right? Do we have some advice? What? What? What? What can we do? Well, i think there’s a couple options, you know, they’re the content strategy that i always go back to, and that is you’re probably not posting thing done facebook and twitter and you’re blogged and everywhere else that are one hundred percent difference, you’re probably taking the same topic or the same story and just, you know, oh, let’s, take the photo from this story and post that on facebook, you know, let’s, take the beautiful quote from this person that we’ve served and post post that on twitter, you’re taking the piece of it that makes sense for those channels, but ultimately the core story or article or whatever it’s the same. So wherever that full pieces posted weather, if you’re here blogger e website er a campaign site, make sure you have the links to keeping raging with that content. Share it on facebook go find men twitter, whatever that way again, kind of looping people back in to those channels from from somewhere else instead of hoping that they just come across that photo in their news feed, if you know, maybe they haven’t engaged with the photo recently, so now they’re not you’re not getting triggered within facebook, okay? And that really does go to what you and i have talked about a lot. Your advice around multi-channel engagement? Yeah, okay, so really you’re emphasizing what? What is really very good practice routinely? Yes, and the other piece of that is, you know, don’t don’t just click into your facebook inside, see those really big pretty overviews where you think, oh, yeah, you know, our average reaches still on track, make sure that it’s part of your tracking and metrics review process you’re going into that granular post by post vue, so that you can start to say, oh, gosh, you know, we saw really great response on this and really low response on this let’s try and target that, you know, and make sure that we’re doing what’s working, or figuring out better ways to point people to those other posts that are probably important. But they didn’t get the reach. Yes, okay. Mary smith recommends having people choose some some preferences from your page about what they will see. What’s your what’s, your sense of that? You know what i’m referring to? Yeah, and i think, you know, i understand it, i get it in there with you, but i have i just have this personal feeling that when you pose, you know, hey, everybody thinks book has changed their the way they do things you need to now go to our page and click on this and do this shameless, you know? Hey, google has introduced these kapin gmail, you know, please make sure that we’re not listed as whatever tab and trying tio get people, you know, to change their setting so that yours is in the forefront. I feel like inevitably there will be some people that follow the directions because they like that you spelled out for them, but many people won’t do it. And it’s facebook, what have we learned five days from now? They’re going to change it again anyway, so i know that it is certainly barrentine we’ll get those updates, but i don’t know that it’s worth your effort to try and engage and rally people around, changing their settings if it’s something that’s just going to change anyway instead, it’s better to just feel versus trying to change the system from the outside or change it from the inside like politics. Just looking at what’s working, do more what’s working and try and encourage people, you know, in a multi-channel way to engage with that content instead of feeling like, well, are answers to have, you know, people subscribe to get all of our update, because if you’re sharing up there, not interested with it doesn’t matter that they’re getting them anyway, you know, so making sure that you’re going from a content first place instead of oh, gosh, these are the new setting, you know, and trying to tell people to go change them. I just don’t know that you’re going to see the return on that kind of outreach the way you will by focusing on good contest. Okay, excellent that’s, very consistent with what you’ve been saying month after month wait, i want to ask you for your sixty second style. Stop what’s your what’s. Your recommendation so this’s a recommendation i realized now may or may not be a mentor to you, but i enjoy taking jewelry when i travel. I know it was a lot of myself shopping travel because that’s gonna be what happens to me. But my trick is that i figure out that jewelry i want to take and i attach it to my socks because i know my socks will not get lost the way you know, a tiny hearing will, and they are in my, like, small protected part of my suitcase. And i know where everything is and make it sound very strange, but i’ve never lost a nearing never lost in that, uh, attach them to your sock. Thank you very much. Excellent. Pleasure to have both of you. Um, your book is very tactical one hundred one social media tactics. But we need to start mohr strategically. Is that is that? Is that right, melanie? Yes. Way often refer to the book is a book about tactics has a sneaky strategy undertone, and we’ll skip well, we’ll get a quick little give away the one hundred first tactic. Is that a strategy? If you’ve made it that far and you haven’t thought through a strategy shouldn’t be implementing any tactics because you generally wouldn’t have a direction that you’re playing. George, right? And we’ve emphasized that on this show many times not just to jump into social media, but what are your goals? Why are you thinking about? Ah facebook page or twitter? Presidents are linked in group or a hashtag on twitter, which we’ll talk about s o you have some you have some advice in the book about strategy post chad, you wantto just brief us quickly on what post is about? Yeah, absolutely. The post method was actually created by gesture enough and charlene lee from their book ground swell and it’s just a really simple, easy way to break through like the scariness of actually creating a strategy, right? I think a lot of people hear that word and get a little freaked out and which is precisely why it’s in the book, right? Because then people just go straight to tactics. Like, well, i don’t really want to write down a strategy i’m just going to actually go through and, you know, implement some things quickly so the post melkis simple it’s just actually think about the people that you’re trying to reach that theo in post our p e and the o is objective like, what do you trying to achieve? Try to put some smart goals in there from numbers and things? Your strategy is the s and that’s sort of how things are going to look on the other side, where the outcomes you’re looking for and then finally, the technology or the tactics in our case, how are you going to implement or what do you gonna implement actually reach get those three things first, three things in order. We’ve talked a lot on this show with amy sample ward, who is going to be with me later about strategy and, in fact, the two full shows on march fifteenth and april nineteenth, we talked about her book that she co authored social change anytime, everywhere so we’ve had voted two full hours in the very recent past to that strategic thinking around online engagement, so now i thought this was a very good balance. Let’s do some tactical and i want to focus on twitter. That’s ah, you two are amenable to that? Absolutely no. Okay, it’s, a favorite goat can’t really it’s your favorite. Okay, okay, um, i’m glad you’re amenable. Otherwise we wouldn’t have too much talk about if you had said no, i’d rather not know. Then we’d be pretty much out of luck. So let’s start with something really pretty basic creating a twitter background. Um, melanie, why is this important for ah your strategy and how it fits into your general branding rather than just having some a default twitter background? Sure so read by non-profits surely take advantage of all of the different platforms and all the different space allotted to them personalized and bring your brand through to their communities, so that could be a twitter background. Google plus cover facebook cover whatever it may be, you’re given this st an avatar of background to tell your story and so it’s very important, i think, because not the visitors here perspective social accounts, that’s the first thing you’re going to see, they’re going to see how your organization is. Representing itself, and you should really be able to tell very quickly, but a nonstop is trying to convey it. So that’s, why it’s very important to put a lot of thought into the detail around all of your social branding, and you have a very good example in the book, the high veld horse care unit, can you maybe you, khun melanie, give a couple of tips either either using that as an example or just, you know, some general tips that you saw that that they did sure have a commission that is it’s pretty upsetting it’s all about ending cruelty to animals so they could have gone that route? But what they’ve chosen to do is to really provide a really uplifting photo it’s gonna fire people help them towards their mission of happy horses. So i think it’s hcc you is their twitter handle. I will get back to if it’s not, but what i like about it is they have ah, clear call to action. They have other ways that you can get in touch with the organization right there. They’re using this space wisely. They have one strong image, they’re on brand they’re using. The right colors, they’re using their logo and just overall it really reflects their overall lead presidents as well. And chad, how would we get started with creating a twitter background? We can’t go through, you know, we can’t go through all these tactical tips step by step, although the book is very good step one, two, three, four, five and but but how would we get started with creating our own twitter background? Right? I think you take a start, it like looking at what you want to have that back on, right? Like taking your brand and sort of interpret it, you know, interpreting that through the lens of twitter like, what does that mean on twitter? How could my background graphic look? Maybe look at some examples get some ideas of things you like then actually executing a strategy and what you want have on it’s pretty simple, you just demographics editor, whether that’s, photoshopped or one of the free ones that you can download or a graphic designer like he would have to happen on fast, right and pretty much you’re just kind of creating something from scratch, right? A good size to use is sixteen. Hundred by twelve hundred pixels that’s going to cover most most twitter backgrounds most computer sizes or they go really big if you’d like andi, i tend to recommend for people to actually do a full image rather than use the tiled approach, which we can create one small image in the tile it you’ve been a full, big, large image give you really good control over where the elements are going to sit in the background. So i think the idea that not over think it, you can find some good examples that you like and, you know, really put a lot of that good stuff in the upper left and then really make sure the rest of the page really looks great on twitter, right? Because you’ve got the chance to not only is your twitter background, but then customize the link color and some of the elements on your twitter profile page and, you know, again don’t spend too much time and because most people going to ingest twitter from a twitter client or something like that. But again, like melanie said, this is a great first impression opportunity, as a lot of times people are seeking. A proper for the first time on social and so make sure your twitter profile page looks off when they land there. You mentioned the upper left, you said important stuff in the upper left. What what’s that about? Yeah, so the upper left is a really visible part of the twitter profile page, right? You know you’re going to get a little bit if you look at the way the twitter page renders there’s a little space up there like a few hundred pixels, we can squeeze some stuff in there and then kind of moving down the left hand side, so we’ll be seeing a lot of people doing is putting a really nice brand image up there, whether it’s a photo are their logo or something like that. And then i have some information that the left side where you can actually put information about your website, maybe a leak they called action. You could maybe even includes some people that are going to be posting on your twitter account there so it’s just a good opportunity to throw some content up because we know people are people’s eyes on the web, go to the upper left. And there is a little bit of space there on the twitter profile. Okay, we know that that’s, where people look first when they go to a new page bilich upper left. Okay, do we know where they go? Second, probably just reading a book down, going, going to the right down from there, right, straight across, diagonally to the right. Okay, we’re gonna take a break for a couple minutes. Go away. Melanie and chad one of your recommendations is to add a twitter follow button. Melanie, how is this? How is this helpful or what is it sure so a lot of the tactics in our first chapter, which set up chapter, just focused on things that you, khun due to optimize all your channels and to really make it easy for you your community to engage with you. So twitter has provided these lovely buttons about four different kinds that you can actually put on your site or on your bog, and they have different focus areas so you can have a button that allows people to easily share a link like i’m sure people are super familiar with justin blogging platforms, but you can also use this for other valuable pieces of content, so think resource is not brochures. I doubt anyone’s going to get so inspired they wanted to share your brochure on twitter, but something that is going to be x stating maybe research or cool article in-kind follow button is probably the most used button behind that and it’s just a button that you can place on your contact page in a foot or sidebar on your site. Donation confirmation form is a good place that allows people just click right on your website and instantly follow you without having to go to twitter and do it there on the hash tag is another one that’s really good that you khun you can pre populate which hash tag? The tweet will mention so it’s, good for a campaign if you’re asking people to add their voices, conversation, et cetera and then the mention wantedto awesome one for asking questions and getting support. So perhaps you have online fund-raising support person who you could add their handle right there, so it’s easy for people to contact them. On their preferred channel, if it’s twitter so there are all kinds of ways to really incorporate into your sight into your different channels, and i want listeners to know that we’re live tweeting because the shows social media manager regina walton is in the studio so you can follow the hashtag non-profit radio. Also, we found the the twitter id melanie for high veld horse care unit it’s at h h c u regina found that gina found that no problem, of course you know we’re covering you, i put you on the spot, regina found it and she live tweeted it. But beyond that we’re live tweeting this shows you can follow the hashtag non-profit radio. Okay, melanie there’s so there’s a lot there. Where would you recommend putting the the content ad button with tzekel right by the title of something? Or where does that go on a block post or something else that you want people to share? I’m going to throw this went over the chad because he’s more of the technical implementation. He probably has a better insight on this. Yeah, so i mean a lot of time. This is that is in response. To the people that have, you know what, i’m supposed to put a twitter icon like on their on their pages, like you can click that and go to twitter dot com and follow from there, but the idea of having us followed button instead, it is a little more powerful and you can put it kind of anywhere but needs to make sense, right? You don’t want to put this in sort of your social sharing area where you want people to tweet a blogger post or like it on facebook, or share it on pensions or something this would go sort of in some other places, like alongside a twitter box like a weird showing your feed right? You can put the follow-up button right there and say, hey, i just want to follow, you know, follow from here, you can put it in blog’s sidebars you could put at the top of bottom of block post greatly labbate you’re about us, page, write a page where you’re listening out a lot of other ways to get in contact with you. A donation confirmation page is another great place where you can actually have it like hey, thanks. For making that donation here keep up to date with the followers on twitter and having just do it right there, your press room or even on a custom kapin facebook so kind of any other places where you’re trying to, you know, get people teo, you know, communicate with you more and follow you and give you give your contact information you mentioned the twitter feed how do we how do we put that chad in in our on our blogger on our site, right? So it’s it’s, another widget from twitter you can actually go to twitter dot com and their resource section, as well as a place where you get the followed button and you can actually get a nice live twitter feed. You’ve seen these on lots of different sites. It’s another tactic in the book and you can actually bring your live twitter feed onto your website, right, which is great for two reasons one and explosions all the great things they’re doing on twitter and helps get get that message out farther, but it also brings in dynamic, real time content to your site to make it more of a lively place we see. A lot organizations doing this even on their home page, where they pull in like their latest tweet, i think you may decide it does that so it’s just again, another way to bring twitter outside of twitter itself and put it on your website. Can you modify that chad so that’s not only your twitter feed, but it’s it’s the occurrence of any time that somebody uses your twitter id? Absolutely yeah, you can do it search results, you can do a hashtag, you can do just the profile so it’s very customizable both from my content perspective and from a design effective you can actually use the css and use some of the attributes actually make it match the html of your website, so it doesn’t look like like a placid on there, so you have very customizable bullet from a content and design perspective. How technically savvy do you have to do tow b to do some of these things? Almost almost not none at all, right? Both, though all the wages are customizable on twitter with a really great with the wig, what you see is what you get type interface we just kind of get select colors if you’re non-technical person, they don’t have access to the website your website. You may need someone what basically twitter dot com spits out a piece of code and you could take that piece of code and put it on your website. So if you can’t do that yourself, you just need to send it to the person that can and do a little we should just take a couple minutes so so really rates again dynamic conta countryside as well. So you mentioned if you’re not a technical person, so a lot of small non-profits i think run into this problem where they just don’t have a lead person on staff to be able to do updates all the time. So what does that really pulls a dynamic content? So when people go to your site it’s not gonna look like it hasn’t been updated in a month? Yeah, it doesn’t look like a site from two thousand three. Exactly. Okay, okay. Um let’s see? Oh, chad. So you mentioned your doing this? What you see is what you get so you’re basically designing it and then the twitter site this is this is all through twitter. Dot com will give you the code based on the way you designed it. Absolutely. Yeah. You just you selected another color you want the links to be and how you want the outline, the look and what the font should be. And you say, you know, i think it’s generate code or i forget the button is but and it actually just spit out some code that you can copy and paste on and that it’s a little nice little in bed code. And where do we find the resource is paige? Is that is that the the navigation barman twitter we goto our twitter page. Wait schnoll looked at out, milady. Did you have that on the top of hands? I think it’s, just twitter dot com flash about flash resource is possibly, um but again, i didn’t have that handup okay. That’s ok, i put you on the spot. So it’s twitter dot com slash about slash resource is ok. Ok. We like to like to share the detail here on tony money enough. So i like it. Get people, you know, get people started a swell as engaged. Okay, well, since we’re talking about all this stuff that could be on our site um, i’m going to turn to you still, chad, how do we make sure that our site is not getting too crowded now? We’re talking about these buttons and the background should have certain detail. How do we make sure we’re not getting too overwhelming? Yeah, absolutely. You want to avoid sort of the nascar factor, right where she’s got, you know, just tons of things kind of all clapped when one page again, you have to be strategic about it. You don’t want to just throw these things all over the place. You want to kind of think about when you’re designing any web page, what you want, the primary and secondary action for someone to be on that page, right? And so i think when you’re looking at, for instance, a twitter follow button that’s not going to probably fall into any of those two categories unless it’s a page about your social presidents are a page about reaching out to your connecting with you more so i think, you know, you really got to look at it from that perspective, right? When you’re adding anything to a page, is this? Is this contributing to the one thing i want them to do on this page, right? So again, get putting twitter but putting on extra stuff on there just going to detract from that so again be strategic about it. Okay, very important. Yes, we want this is all these tactics are part of a bigger strategy, which absolutely said, but merits saying again okay for you, melanie there’s a there’s, a recommendation in the book that you can personalize twitter and share, whose share with with visitors who’s doing the tweeting. Why? Why is that a good idea? Well, because twitter and facebook, it’ll get more crowded by brands, i think it’s even more important, to really personalize it and humanize organization people give the people and fund-raising right, and people communicate with people over a brand all day long, so if you’re doing it right, communicating on social should really feel very personal there much of a one on one conversation, and it often is if if you are doing it right, you are going to be you having those one on one interactions of advertise with your constituents so it’s nice to be able to present who’s. Behind this mystical organization accountants, you know who are the people that are actually behind it? They’re not robots, they have names, they probably have their own twitter handles and even better if you can add a photo to really human eyes who this person is that you’re communicating with its really going to increase engagement in the long run, you used the example of the humane society doing this very well, right? They have one thing they had several people treating on their account, that’s another really good thing to bring up is, you know, you’re going to try to get that consistency and voice, but everyone’s in a community a little differently, so just hurry up acknowledging that content organizations choose to even put initials on you, the author of the treated if it’s a team tweeting, uh, right now, i think they just have one person who’s kind of the face of their twitter account that if you go to their handle it’s very clear who it is and it’s a friendly face pompel durney can relate teo and have met hundred persons is very much the same when she portrays herself on social, so i think it’s really, really adds to the credibility of the brand and the mission. How do you manage this at at blackboard? Melanie so the blackbaud we have cheryl black who’s heading up our social now, so if you go to this site, you’ll see her face and her twitter handle right there, so people know exactly who they’re talking about, so you’re not hypocritical. You actually are following your own advice. Yes, actually, dad and i built the social program together a blackbaud and at one point, both of our mugs were up there because way were the voice of blackbaud but now we we’ve kind of handed over that torch, so people know that cheryl is the person that they’re communicating with. I have lots of hypocrites who our guests on twenty martignetti cafferata art, in fact, i tried to recruit them that way, you know? I like people who just have advice for others, so you’re an exception to that on admirable exception, both of you. All right, chad, where we’re going to share this? This personalization, these photos names. Where do we do this? On our site? Yeah. Again. You can sew the couple ways, i think. Melanie talked about having to be part of your twitter background graphic you can have it be a part of your on twitter, your description of the site you know where you talk about hey, this is who our brand is and by the way, the tweets or by so and so on and again, i think money may have mentioned some people do it on a twitter level. You’ve got five people actually tweeting you can do it like i think it’s a little, a little carrot and then some initials, so people at it that way you can also put on your website again when you’re when you’re talking, a lot of a lot of accusations do this in different ways, put out who their public faces are, who is talking, they could be on the contact that page, it could be in the press room again, just another opportunity to get that faith associate with the brand. I think it also goes both ways. We talk about being engaged to the to your supporters, into your audience, but also, i think, engaging the other way where it makes the person who’s doing the tweeting and doing the actual social activity feel a little more empowered within their own company, right? And helps them develop their own brand, which makes them do their job better, right? They become more invested. And so i think it kind of works both ways it’s really powerful tactic to get people were just really involved in really engaged in twitter on both sides. I’m talking with melanie mathos and chad norman. They are co authors of one hundred one social media tactics for non-profits the book goes much broader than twitter, we’re just focusing on twitter because on this show we haven’t talked about that specifically for quite some time. But the show there’s the book is much broader tactics in ah, all the social media sites um, we can we can make this even more personal chat with some actual, like meetings and getting to know people locally. You have some ideas around that? Absolutely so i mean, twitter is one of the best ways you can use it is to actually reach out and to attract new people right now, it’s a great public facing tool that people really looked too now as an extension of your your media arm. And an organization so there’s, definitely some great waste interact locally, so we talk about a couple of them in the book. One of the coolest things a lot of people don’t know about is a site called tweet aholic and there’s lots of ways to like look att who’s tweeting locally and who’s actually, you know, because the hashtag because of geo location but tweet aholic, take it one step further and allows you to, like you could dig in and see who are the top tweeters by city name, right? So you can look up a city like new york city or charleston, south carolina and actually see a list ranked by who tweets the most, who is the most followers? So this enables you to actually go out and say, like, hey, i want to find out who the fifty, noisiest people in charleston, people that i may not want to engage with. But, you know, people that if i could get them entrenched into my brand and the my message, they may re tweet us because they have a big influence over people. So it’s a great way to when you’re starting out sort of target. A local group of people that may eventually become your advocates and help you spread your message locally on another way to get involved in almost every city now has a hashtag right so new york city’s on this i’m guessing it’s probably n y c charleston’s see hs a lot of time it say your airport code or just, you know, whatever your tower goes by outlay is definitely ella for los angeles, so you can follow these hashtag you could put him in a search feed as many ways to contract it, but again, that helps you monitor the general chatter of a city, right? So you can kind of see who’s talking about what and you can use the hashtag actually put on your own tweets to get into that stream of people that may not already be following you. We have just about a minute and a half or so left. Melanie and i wanted to spend some time, make sure we talk about measuring your outcomes on twitter. You have some ways of doing that to see how effective you’re being. Yes, definitely, and part of developing your strategy is really, you know, defining what? Those measurable objectives are because everyone asks, how do i know what to measure? Well, if you know what you’re trying to achieve, you know what you want to measure, so there are a ton of ways to do this. Facebook has amazing tool built in with facebook in site where you can really get down to even very specific demographics gender location, something with you two really looking within your own website, really seeing where people are coming from through social referrals is very informative because some social networks pop up that you may not be on your radar atop channel for you and and specific to twitter you, khun, you can monitor your own name on twitter. You can you can even calculate your influence. You have ah, have a site where you can calculate influence what’s that so cloud has been around for some time, and now you’re seeing it surface in a lot of different tools who we now have krauz scores, which are influence scores, dealt right into profiles so that’s another way to really i d who your influence there’s are and how influential you are. Uh, if it’s if it’s trending up it says a lot if it’s turning down, if you want to see, you know what you’re doing differently, that kind of lessening your impact and your message, amplification and that’s, that cloud is k l o ut right, kale o ut, dot com, yes, okay, melanie and chad, we have to leave it there. Probably not the part of jersey city you’re in, but but jersey city, new bern, north carolina and norcross, georgia live listener love to you time for tony’s, take two on my block this week, i feel bad for the irs determinations unit that’s, the irs office that is accused of unfairly scrutinizing and delaying applications for tax exempt status from mostly not exclusively but mostly conservative political organizations like the tea party and but i have been seeing that office struggle for years because i’ve seen applications for tax exemption routinely take close to a year, and i personally know groups that have waited more than a year even there was an automation project, the form that you fill out to get your tax exemption from the irs is formed ten, twenty three, and there was supposed to be an automation project where you could fill that form out online. Then they delayed the launch of that, and then i stopped hearing about it. So i always thought that that was bad news, you know, not a priority among the irs development staff toe automate that on and then in two thousand eleven, there were two hundred seventy five thousand charities that lost their tax exempt status, and tens of thousands of those reapplied they didn’t want to lose their tax exempt status. They were still active organizations, they re applied and to that same unit, so tens of thousands of new applications probably came in within months, i’d say of when that that iris loss of exempt status list was issued. So, you know, i just think that i’ve been seeing this determinations unit struggling for years many years as i’ve been around non-profits and i think it just came to a head and people were trying to be more efficient and flag something’s and categorize. Something’s and that turned out not to be such a good idea, but i don’t think it was politically motivated. I think it’s ah, staff people trying to just be more efficient, there’s more about that on my blogged at tony martignetti dot com, including some links that i have, and also including links that some commenters have had gotten some very good comments with with links to that post called i feel bad for the irs determinations unit and that’s tony’s take two for friday, the twenty fourth of may twenty first show of the year and also want to wish you happy. I have been taking a tour of the thunderstorm region and experiencing a lot of high humidity and sudden downpours. Okay. Yeah, well, welcome home. Thank you. You’ve been talking, i guess, about your book. Yeah, about the book. And and, you know, some of the events have been q and a’s. Some of them. I was joined by alison cape in and we did it together, and others were more like hands on workshops really focused on getting organizations kind of from the from the very beginning stages of maybe having a facebook page, but they don’t know who set. It up, or why? Or maybe not even really engaging much online and and just having an email newsletter, and that was it, and helping them figure out how to how to have some strategy and resource is in place so that they could go start engaging. Alison kapin of course, your co author of the book, how long do these workshops go? I mean, how long’s it take to get people to be more more savvy and strategic about what they’ve already jumped into and are not doing very well. It does not matter how much time the event is, people will say it was not enough time, you know? So i’ve done workshops that air just a knauer long i’ve done workshops that ahron entire eight hour day, and you get to the end of eight hours and i can barely speak out loud and certainly don’t want to hear my voice any longer, and yet people are like, so can you come back tomorrow and we’ll keep working on this, you know, because i think there is that feeling that when when someone who’s gone gone down the path before comes back to the beginning of the trail, you know, and is willing to go with you, will you don’t want them to just go the like the first mile of the hike you like, no take whole appellation trail is pretty long, you know, george, i don’t want you to leave me now, so but but ultimately the point of the workshops at least those that that i’ve been doing recently are really to get people not to a place where they leave the workshop feeling like, well, i have my strategy in place, i have a community map finished, you know, i know every piece of content i’m ever going to create, but instead they know how they can go create that content plan and how to create a community map so they can go do it with their staff, because ultimately, i don’t know what they dio i don’t know what their strategic plan is, so they can take it back, work on it with their staff and put something in place that makes sense for them. Okay, so let’s, talk about some of the questions that you’ve been getting talking about brought issues, certainly and right, but why don’t you start to share? What you got for us? I have a long list after five events i was so you’re you’re speaking is not very good because people have millions of questions you and as you know, i’m anticipating the questions, which is what a good speaker as you know, i find it very hard t just talk and talk my way talked about your that yes, exactly. Tim sample on the line, i don’t know what way have oregon. So the first one that i that i got consistently almost every event wass you know, not not so much the how much time should we invest but the why does it take so much time? Why, you know as if they assume they’re doing, they’re doing facebook wrong and that’s why it’s taking time? And i think it was really indicative that there is still no matter how much we hope it goes away, there is still the sense that you could just create some social media profiles and bam, you’re going to have a super engaged community that wants to, like, take that video viral like whatever it’s going to be and that’s it it’s not a silver bullet, you know? Social media is a place where you can you’re gonna have to invest time because it is a it’s, a slow burn, you know, you’re just going to build that community over over time, and it will continue growing if you continue investing time and, you know, all the rest. But, you know, people were really disappointed. Like, why is it taking me so much time to use facebook on overtime meaning years, right? This is long term stra, tragic engagement conversations, all the stuff that, you know exactly exactly, i mean, you know, some of those organizations, for example, that chad melanie we’re talking about and pointing to his great examples, especially using twitter. Well, they’ve been using twitter, most of them, you know, since two thousand seven eight nine and it’s been a while, you know, and and it’s not because they they joined twitter because they thought it was only going to be here for a year, they joined it saying, ok, well, you know, our communities out there, i think we can engage let’s just start engaging, and we’ll keep building on to what we’re doing. All right, you’ve got to recognize this is a long term right, irrespective of the platform. Exactly. Exactly. And, you know, even if for some reason, you know twitter shutdown tomorrow permanently, you’re going to have to go somewhere else and start building because the community also does the same thing even as people you know, when we join a new platform or go try out a new tool it’s not like we instantly all have our, you know, three hundred high school graduation friends that have somehow found us already. And, you know, even as individuals, it takes time to build up how you use a tool in what you’re who you’re following, etcetera. So why should it be different for an organization? Ok, another question that we got a couple times wass what if we don’t have any fans? What if we don’t have any followers? Like, how long do i use facebook before i stop? You know, how long do i use twitter before i stopped? Because well, you know, we don’t have any fans right now, so what? Why should i post? Why should i log in to facebook today and post something if i only have two fans and i totally understand that the emotional side of that question the like but no one’s listening to me. So why am i going? But again, think about it as if it wasn’t social media. If your organization said okay, we’re going, you know, pilot this new programme, we’re going to create a new service and day two of this new service no one shows up at your clinic. Well, you’re not like sorry. Yes, the service is done. We’re no longer providing, you know, health care checks because no one showed up today. You would you would laugh and think that that’s so silly, you know, if it was an offline thing, you would say we have to commit to it. We have to just say, you know, every day at nine o’clock we opened the clinic doors well, same on social media, obviously not to the same maybe extent, but you still have to say ok, every day we’re going to post something so that if and when people do come it’s it’s a living place it’s not, you know, a ghost town, social profile that’s never been used so and again, creating that consistent content that is valuable lets you share it with people. Let’s, give it, tell other staff, hey, we posted that report, you know, like melanie said, if you have a great new article or some research posted up there, even if you don’t have a lot of followers and friends, and then encourage the people out, the organization partners you work with to share it, but to share it from that social platform instead of just from your website and encourage people to go there and again, it’s, like, you’re going to have a thousand fans overnight, but you’ll get those people who said, oh, you’re oh, that research, you know, it’s really interesting i’m going to like your page or follow you on twitter in case you have more of that. So again, it’s it’s more of the commitment to being consistent and less of the well, no one’s here, so i don’t wantto play in the play room by myself, but is there a point where a new organization should say, you know, we’re just not we’re not getting any traction, maybe our constituents just aren’t interested in facebook or twitter. Yeah, i definitely think so, and that isn’t going to be decided in in a month, you know that comes over time when you know that you have given it a really effort, but it also goes back to things we’ve talked about on the show before about not creating social profiles unless, you know, your community is even using that platform or starting a strategy exactly. Exactly. So we, you know, for example, that one of the events yesterday in burlington someone said, you know, i’m hearing people talk about instagram, should i use instagram? My community is, you know, he described his community and i said, well, it sounds like and i don’t want to be making, you know, extreme generalizations, but it sounds like your community probably is not one that has ah lot of smartphones, you know, it’s, not a bunch of iphone users, and he said, no, probably not. Well, if you don’t, if you don’t a camera phone, you’re not using instagram. It isn’t that they’re not interested in photos as a general medium, but they’re not gonna have that app, so don’t feel obligated to go just create profiles every time you hear of a new application. Follow your community to those platforms so, you know it’s worth being consistent. With content, we gotta take a break. Go away for a couple minutes. Really, if you don’t. If you don’t think your constituents have smartphones because it’s a smart it’s an app, right, right. Ok, what else you got for us? For your from your travels? Well, i have a few more. So one that came up in a in a couple different cities was the question of, you know, unlike the last question, you know, we don’t have anyone no one’s, no one’s liking us on facebook instead. What if we’re getting plenty of likes and they are not the right people? Oh, now, how are we defining the right people? Well, i i asked the same question think they were just like, you know, oh, they’re not the, you know, donors, and we only want donors or that’s what they don’t have a lot of following people follow us, but they don’t just tell us how you know, these were examples of, uh, primarily youth facing organization’s getting some, not pg thirteen appropriate accounts are connecting to them, okay on i and i think this is an interesting one to bring up because for some organization, you know, like they’re just if they’re just following you on twitter, for example, you might not even but you might not go through your followers list because maybe you’re just paid attention if they’re adding you or something, you know, if they’re if they’re replied you directly, then maybe it would get flagged to you, but to chad and melanie’s example of including on your actual website or on your actual blawg page, the follow or like us on facebook, widget, a little button and it and if you do that you can have it show, you know, that other people have have liked the paige, but you’d showing up on your website and they they have that because they wanted people to see that social like, hey, lots of people like us, you know, as soon as you went to the website, but unfortunately, that meant you would go to this website focused on youth services and see a string of inappropriate facebook photos along the top of the website and so their their community manager there, you know, the staff people that were managing those accounts felt like they had to at all times have the home page and facebook open so that they could refresh things frequently throughout the day. And if they saw a new person pop up, they could go into facebook and block them from the page or go into twitter and block them from the twitter if they’re inappropriate. Exactly. And that and and so that’s the whole other side of well, first you’re trying to just get and you know, that idea of i just need to get people to the page, and now you’re thinking, oh my gosh, these horrible people are on my page so, you know, how do you deal with that? And then again, i think it really does not exclusively you’re still going to have to do that physical management of deleting people are blocking people, but it comes back to content if you’re making it very clear that you are there providing services and not necessarily, you know, connecting people with youth, then then again, you’re setting the tone that this space is here to talk about the service they were, they were probably pretty clear about that. I mean, odds are it’s the person who was asking the question with people because these are multiple we got this a few times people who ask these questions, probably their sites are very pure and youth oriented, but they’re still getting inappropriate followers and friends. Well, i think the difference is that it’s it’s connecting facebook and your website, your website may be very clear what you d’oh, but often, organizations wantto have more of the like fundez social content on their facebook page, so that may mean they’re facebook parties is photos, events, etcetera, so on that facebook page, it may not have the same kind. Of institutional feel that the website does okay, so do what you can managing moderate, yeah, exactly, exactly on and then one more for tow highlight for today at the first time, i’ve gotten this question at these kinds of events, you know, normally get this question from people like you, tony, but instead i was getting it from, you know, normal citizens, and they were saying, well, isn’t facebook dead isn’t isn’t twitter just for like young people. Now i write an article that, you know, all these kids left facebook, and now they’re using twitter so all the adults should leave twitter very interesting perspective, that article i ask, such as, i’ve never ask questions like that. Well, you know, i think you’ve probably asked it in a more, you know, theoretical what’s the future. Okay, well, that’s much more insightful, but the undertones of is it a valuable place? Is it worth investing in, you know? And i think for those people they were coming at that question from well, if if this person says it isn’t, it isn’t going to be around for a long time that maybe i wouldn’t have to waste my time today. And i understand that feeling i have the love hate relationship like all the rest of us do with some of these tools, but at the end of the day, until we see that facebook really is dead, or we see that twitter is apparently only for young people like some article that that person read, they are still having huge engagement. There are so many daily active users, monthly active users, even in our own, the report that we do with them in our strategic services, the e non-profit benchmarks report showed that in two thousand twelve the non-profits that that we study and have access to their data for this report had over two hundred percent growth in their twitter fan base or follower base, so that may happen. A facebook could maybe be gone tomorrow, but today it is here and today there are millions of people using that platform, so you could say you don’t want to invest because maybe it could go away. But you have your trying to get people’s email address, and they unsubscribes it’s the same feeling if it if it is the channel that they’re choosing and that they’re there it’s worth engaging in and again, you should have a strategy that isn’t based on facebook. You should have a strategy based on engagement so that you can be nimble. Facebook goes away, you pivot. It blackbaud twenty twelve bb con conference. My pleasure now to welcome john list he’s the homer jay livingston, professor and chairman in the department of economics at the university of chicago. He’s expert in the science of philanthropy and his new project the science of philanthropy initiative spy is funded by the john templeton foundation. It’s, a research and outrage venture and we’re going to talk about his research and spies, outreach to charities and how you can participate. Professor john list. Welcome to the show. Thanks, tony. Thanks for having me. It’s. A pleasure to have you from chicago. You getting snow out there? The way we’re getting inundated died here in new york. Not too much, but it is pretty icy here. So it is. It is difficult driving conditions here, tony. Okay, well, i’m glad you’re safe in your little office. I was, you know, i like to picture academics. You know, my major was economics that i was an economics major at carnegie mellon university. That’s why you’re so smart now, that’s. Because i was rejected by the university of chicago. I hope you were not share in nineteen. I would have been applying in nineteen. Eighty. I hope you were not chair in nineteen. Eighty. I was not. I was actually in eighth grade in nineteen. Eighty rock. Okay, well, you’re a little younger than me, but you don’t look it from your photo now, okay? Let’s, talk about spy. This work is very interesting. Like i said in the in the lead in no longer must charities rely on conventional wisdom? Let’s, start with your methodology around campaigns. What are you doing? I think that right? I think when i first i became interested in this area, tony what i what i found was that you had a bunch of really good people, a bunch of really good hearted people who were basing their decisions. Mohr on anecdotes and gut feelings. Right, then the actual scientific method. So when i say scientific method, what i mean by that is basic a basic experiment. So in that basic experiment, it’s always important to have a control group. Because then when you have ah, treatment groups such as some people might get a one to one match. You want to always compare that to a group of people who did not receive a match? Okay, that’s what? I call a program that’s the control group. Watch out. I have george in jail on tony martignetti non-profit radio. You you scared it closely. But you then you defined control. You could define control group. So you’re clear, but watch out. Okay, all right, so so we have. This is this is the scientific method. We have a control group in a test group or treatment group. And how have you been applying this to campaigns beyond matching? Sure, sure. So when i first started, i was presented with a problem at the university of central florida. So at the university of central florida, the deen challenged me to start a center to do research in environmental policy and what the dean said it is. John, you are responsible for raising money to start the research center. So of course, the first question becomes different in need of resource is for a capital project. What are the first steps i should take? And the fundraisers will tell you you should secure a fraction of the money privately before going public. So, as an economist, i asked a simple question. Well, what is the optimal fraction? What i essentially found? Wass ah, bunch of anecdotes about what that fraction should be. For example, the fund-raising school recommended that forty to fifty percent of the goal should be pledged before the public campaign begins. Other hand books recommended figures between twenty and fifty percent. Right around the same time the university of wisconsin was building there. Cole center, which houses the basketball team in the hockey team. And what they had done in the quiet period is they’re gone out. And gathered twenty seven of their seventy two million dollar goal. So as you can see that the evidence is sort of scattered all over the place. And i simply asked, how do we know which fraction is correct? And very few people had actual scientific evidence to back up their claims that a certain fraction was actually the correct fraction to gather in private before going public. Okay, so he looks just exactly is i didn’t set up a direct mail solicitation, and i split ten thousand households into different buckets or different groups. In one group i advertised, we’re looking for money for our center for environmental policy analysis here at the university of central florida, and we already have ten percent of what we need. We already have that from an anonymous donor. If you know, another group of hall souls received a different kind of letter. It was identical in all respects, except it said that we already have thirty three percent of the of the goal. And another group received a letter that said, we have already saved sixty seven percent of the goal and then the fourth group, which is our control group received the letter. But there was no mention that we have received up front money. Okay? And so this was to our knowledge to your knowledge, is was the first scientific method rigorous test at least that you could find of different match is having an impact on thie outcome of giving? And what did you find that’s? Exactly, right. So what we found is that over that range from ten to sixty seven percent that the more you advertising seed money, the more gifts that you will receive. So in this particular study, what we’ve found was that most people gave and those who were going to give actually gave mohr so the more seed money you have, you wouldn’t do it more people to give and those people who would have given anyways they actually give mme or when you have ah hyre level of seed money. Okay, interesting. And so you did this work. University of central florida. You were then stolen away, recruited away to the university of chicago for more sophisticated work. E well, i don’t know about that, but, you know, there were a few stops in between. I ended up going to the university of arizona, and then from there, i went to the university of maryland and well, i was at the university of maryland. I spent a year working in the white house at the council of economic advisers, and then after that, i came here to chicago to get smarter. Okay, well, you work your way north from from two very south locations. Work your way to the northeast and then the frigid chicago area. Now that you’re at the university, your work has expanded and you’re doing work now with some pretty large charities. Want you describe that that’s, right? That’s. Right, tony, um, you know, after you established that upfront money is important, you can ask yourself, well, should we be using that money is simply an announcement like i did at the university of central florida? Or should we be using it as an announcement and is a match? So, for example, you could say an anonymous daughter just gave us one million. Dollars now we will use those funds is a match. So, for example, for every dollar that you give, we will match with a dollar of this donors. So we ended up taking that idea, which, of course, is a common idea in fund-raising to a simple, direct mail experiment with the sierra club of canada and what we were interested in there it was simply testing the idea of announcing money, which i did at the university of central florida campaign versus announcing money and using it as a one to one match. And what we found there again, we’re we’re sending out tens of thousands of letters two households essentially using the normal ask that the sierra club uses. But here some households receive a letter that has, for example, no mention of this upfront money and that’s, a control group. Other households received the match other households received. We have some money. But there is no match campaign. And what we found there is that again. Seed money works quite well. What i mean by seed money is that if you have up front money that’s very effective in generating people to give but the interesting thing there is that the one to one match worked about as well. Is the seed money treatment in both of them worked much better than the control group. Okay. Okay. Now, the one to one match. This is with the sierra club of canada. The one to one match, you said worked a little bit better than the leadership gift announcement. Actually, they were the leadership gift announcement. Worked slightly better, but they were okay, but they were statistically the same. If you look at them throughout statistical tests, they were about the same. Okay. Okay. And that was a one to one match. Now, what do we know about the what have you learned about the differences between different levels of match? One, two. One, two, one. One, two, two, etcetera. Exactly. You know, tony that’s a great question. Because that’s that’s clearly the next step in the research agenda. And when you look a man, i should have been a profess xero economics. I did well to carnegie mellon. I have no shot having gone there so way. Always have a spot here for you at the university. Thank you, thie that you know, you’re not the dean. Just need department chair. Well, no, i’m just a lowly department there. Department chair, while i’ll use you for my letter of recommendation. All right? Absolutely. Okay. What do we know about how these different levels of matching compare? Yeah. That’s a good question, because you know, the anecdotal evidence out in the field is that obviously a three to one match should work. A lot better than a one to one match in a three to one match, of course is, for every dollar that you give, the charity will match with three dollars and the one the one every dollar you give the charity will match with a dollar. But of course, when we went out to the literature, we could not find any scientific evidence that indeed a three. The one match was better than a one to one mad again. Just a lot of conventional wisdom. And this is the tradition. Absolutely. Okay, absolutely. Which, of course, drives an economics professor. Not what we don’t have any data or scientific evidence to back up that finding. All right. Here’s. Where we? Yeah, here’s. Where we part company c i should probably just settle for an honorary. Ph d from the university because it hasn’t driven me as nuts as it has you, but i’m glad it has go ahead. Absolutely so this time we teamed with the national liberal non-profit in the us, which does political and socially oriented work, and i have to be careful because i cannot mention the non-profit due to a non disclosure agreement that we made with them. But essentially the background is that every month they send about fifty thousand letters, too. They’re regular donors, and they asked them for money and essentially what we did is, again we put the households into different buckets or different groups. In one bucket, you had households that received a one to one match offer. In another group, households received a two to one match offer, and in a third group, households received a three to one match offer. And then, of course, we compare that to a fourth group, which is the control group, right? No match, no match at all, which they received, you know, a typical letter that says we’re looking for money to help the cause, so to speak. Okay, so what we found here is that if you just look at the data amongst those households that received a match offer versus those households that did not receive any match offer. You raise about nineteen percent more money in those matching treatments compared to the control group. Excellent. And the interesting part is that effect occurs entirely on what an economist calls the extensive margin. And what i mean by that is that nineteen percent occurs entirely because the response rate went up about twenty two percent. So more people decided to give. When there was a match available, they still gave the same amount per person. But more people give when there’s a match available. So so the effect is not because people are giving mohr, but because more people are giving exactly. And this. And then the level of giving doesn’t change among among all the people who give versus the control group that’s, right? So if you were going to give anyway, on average, you give the same amount. But you just get twenty two percent more people to give some money rather than give nothing. And is that impacted at all by the level of the match? Exactly. So the other finding that we that just jumps out at you in the data. Is that the three to one, the two to one and the one to one match groups perform identically. Are you sure about that, e? I mean, nasa has made mathematical errors, and they forgot to convert you forgot to convert fahrenheit into celsius or something like that. Are you sure about this? I mean, it happened, you know, if you hadn’t. If you haven’t double check your math, i’ll understand. But i’ll tell you what. I have double and triple checked my math, and i’ve also gone to other charities, and i’ve done the same kind of experiment with amnesty international with liar, a beat, a children’s hospital. And what we find over and over again is that having match dollars, really? That really matters a lot. But the size of the match does not matter. Ah, that’s. Very interesting. Very interesting. And contrary to all that conventional wisdom that we were talking about. Okay, so the one to one match pulls well, has has the same effect as the three to one match. Okay, if you’re sure okay, what about the one, two two or one two, three. Where? A dollar gets fifty cents or something like that or those types of matches exactly that’s very good questions. So we have now extended that original experiment all the way down on the other side, so we’ve looked at one to two and we have looked at one, two, three and again one, two, three and one, two, two are the same as one to one. So at least over the range that we’ve experimented with one toe, one all the way down to one, two, three and all the way up to three, two, one we find the same result that people give the same amount of money. Now, i think we need to take care here, because if we would go all the way, say, for example, to one to one hundred, if you give one hundred dollars, we will match with one dollars, i’m pretty sure that would not work very well, although that’s a gut feeling, so i i i i don’t want to break my own rules, right? Because that’s, just my intuition that suggests if you go that far, you can actually hurt your capital campaign, but i don’t have any empirical evidence for that okay, john list is the homer jay livingston, professor of economics and chair of the department at the university of chicago, and we’re talking mostly about his work through the science of philanthropy initiative at the university spy, which you’ll find at s p i hub dot or ge, and we’re going to talk about working with it’s by very shortly. All right, john. So now we don’t know one, two one, two a one hundred match that would i guess you would expect that to be different than a one to one match, but we don’t have any evidence of that, right? That’s correct. Okay. Do you plan to test a match that that that’s that largest to see if there where where the boundary is that the one to one effect breaks down? You know, i would love to. And just exactly as you mentioned. Always looking for partners to try ideas such as that one. And i think that’s exactly. The next step that the research will take is is where does the match the effectiveness of the match actually break down? I think it’s a great research question and one in which i do wish. To explore. Okay. Okay. Interesting. Now you have some evidence of how this works on ah, dahna ah, warm list versus a cold list. Why don’t you describe those and what? That what those outcomes are exactly. Exactly. So when we think about warm list, what? The way that we differentiate people in data sets is a warm list is a person who has given to our cause within the last three years. So if you’ve given ten dollars or ten million dollars within the last three years, we label you is a warm list person. Ah, cold list person is a person who has not given to our cause in the last three years. So that just gives you some definitions of the way that we think about cold lest versus warm list. Now you’re exactly right to pinpoint that feature in our data. What we find is that the cold less people are more influenced by the match, then the warm list people it’s. Not that the wordless people are not influenced by the match because indeed, warm, less people are influenced by the match. They’re just not as influenced as much. Is the coldness, people? Okay, okay. And they’re influenced in what way the proportion of giving is greater, right? Because we’re talking about more people giving not people giving mohr money exactly it’s exactly proportion all about the number ofthe coldness people who give above and beyond the number of coldness people who give in the control group. Okay, okay. Interesting. All right, let’s, move to. Well, let’s, let’s spend a little time talking about the partnership. We have more to talk about your research in terms of leadership gifts. We’ve just been talking about matching gifts, but you’re you’re actively looking for charity partners to work with, right? Absolutely. So, you know, we’ve just we’ve just begun. We’ve just started spy hub dot org’s is you mentioned earlier, and even though my own research, i’ve been doing work in philanthropy now, since nineteen ninety eight, we have just received a very generous grant from the john templeton foundation that allows us more opportunities and more time toe work with those charities out there who are interested in partnering with us. Remember, you’re gonna have to put up with our craziness because we’re academics. We have crazy ideas. Yeah, you should see your listeners if you go to my block. You’ll see you’ll see john’s, head shot and there’s all kinds of mathematical equations behind him on a blot on a blackboard. There’s, not even a whiteboard. I was surprised i would have thought for sure university chicago would be using whiteboard technology, but not in your classroom anyway. Unless it’s an old photo it’s it’s chalk on a blackboard and you have the and use lambda in your and some of your equations that would know lambda always scared me as i was as i was doing economics, studying econometrics and regression analysis. I don’t know why just lambda lambda just seems intimidating to me lambda i don’t know a couple of lamb does behind so yeah, i looked at your picture way linda brings up everybody still old school here. I’m sitting in my office right now and i actually have a blackboard in my office which has lambda written on it. You do see that’s? Why i’m getting a bad vibe going toe. And what have you that that’s, really, the only cost is that you allow us to work with the data and pushed the knowledge frontier in this particular sector, because that’s, really what we’re in it for, we’re not in it to make money ourselves way really want the sector to undergo a scientific revolution, because we believe so strongly in this sector. So what the leadership gives essentially are about is that if you receive upfront money, there are many different ways to use that up front money. You can simply announce it is we did at the university of central florida. You can use it as a matching gift. Is we just talked about, or you can use it, for example, for small gifts. You know, small daughter gets teo to give to people who actually give to your cause. Or you can actually use it for lottery prizes. If you wanted teo to link people’s contributions to a possibility, tto win a large prize. Those are other ways in which you could use upfront money as well. Okay. Interesting. Yeah, go. Ahead what we’ve been finding is that if you actually link the donation to ah probability of winning a prize that you khun considerably increased giving rates, in fact, is much is one hundred percent, and most of that result is actually on again the extensive margin more people are giving when they have a chance to win a prize. Okay, um, and how does how does this type of e-giving compare with the one to one match? You know, this type of giving is in the range of a one to one match. So if your ah, if you’re thinking about going out and using up front money, what we’ve been finding is that a one to one match works about as well is ah, lottery where you where you give away a large prize, say a thousand dollars to one of the donors it works about equally as well as a one to one match. Okay. Okay. Um, these are too different types of inducements. This is interesting. Is that the, uh one to one match is conditional on the person giving and the the other is not it’s it’s. Definitely. What? Why that? What is that difference? Mean, exactly. So what we’ve been finding you pinpointed a very important fact in our data is that on the one case one to one match, those dollars essentially are conditional in the sense that you have to give one hundred dollars to have the anonymous donor gives one hundred dollars. We’re a leadership gift is essentially the the lead daughter giving money that’s unconditional. So what we’ve been finding is that that unconditional gift tends to be slightly stronger, a slightly stronger signal to donors. Then the match gift is, and we think that’s because the signaling value off that gift and what i mean by signaling value is this anonymous donor probably knows mohr information about the charitable cause than i do. So if i see her giving a large amount of money for the cause, that sends a signal to me that charitable dr is a good one. It’s a good signal of charitable quality, that’s what our data points to time in and time again, that the leadership, a gift is a very important signal of the quality of the charitable dr. Okay, okay. Let’s, i want to talk a little about what you’re what you’re doing next. You have some interesting research that you’re working on your next project, the one one and done right? Yeah, right, please. Yeah, that’s good that you bring that up because this is a project that right now has a lot of my attention, and this is a project that we’ve worked in partnership with smile train so smile train is a wonderful organization that takes care of cleft palates of of the youth overseas, so they send doctors overseas to take care of this very dreaded birth defect. And with them, we’ve developed a program which we call once and done and essentially it’s a direct mail solicitation. But within that direct mail solicitation, it says, give now and we will never bother you again if you check this box. John, we have just a minute left. Give, tell us briefly what? What? The impact of that is sure what we’ve been finding we’ve sent to about eight hundred thousand people in what we’ve been fighting is that if you use once and done, you can raise about three times more money, then you can with the control group onley thirty four percent of the people will actually check the box. And when you look into the future, you don’t actually lose donors. You raised just as much money in the future. Is you raised from the control group in the once and done group. So, in essence, you raised about three times more money in the initial mailer, and it does not compromise future fundez from those people. Okay, we have to sort of leave it there. I think you should call it one and done, though not once. And done. You’re missing the good alliteration opportunity wanted done. No one gift. And you’re done. Remember how many economists not an english professor? Would you go for the goal for the liberation? I don’t have more punch one and done. I think you should rename it one and done. Welcome. Thank you. Nice to be here. It’s a pleasure to have things very much. Your session topic yesterday was don’t leave money on the table. Ten proven practices for success with magic gift let’s start with a very basic why shoot a charity spent time with matching gives his reforms there’s compliance is going to be back and forth with companies. Why is this worth it? I’m currently about a little over a billion dollars a year is given by corporations to matching gets about one point four billion dollars it’s about twenty thousand companies in america that will match their gifts, about half of the fortune five hundred have matching gifts, they’ll match donations, and a number of them will also match volunteer hours. So, for example, if you volunteer at a non-profit you work for microsoft, they’ll actually pay you fourteen dollars for every hour that you don’t pay the non-profit fourteen dollars for every hour they volunteer and some companies if you give them a thousand dollar donation or one hundred dollar donation, they’ll match it. Oneto one, two to one, three to one. So it’s in a sense, it’s kind of newfound money caused fund-raising isn’t all that high. There are some compliance issues and paper forms and such but that’s getting easier. So in general there’s there’s a big opportunity and i’ve done a lot of research that has shown that most companies are not doing nearly enough in this area and they could be substantially increasing their revenue several percent if they pursue some of these practices. How recent is the bee in person volunteer time it’s been a mean it’s been in place for a while now. It’s a relatively new thing but it’s it’s been in place for a while. Okay, so it’s worth the small administrative time that’s right in the past. The way the process worked was the employee was encouraged to go to the hr department. More recently go to the internet at their company. Get a form. Fill out the form. Send it into the non-profit. Non-profit indicates that they indeed got the donation. They send it on to the company. The company over time has been outsourcing this to other companies to do the paperwork. So it’s actually been someone burned some authority, but the internet and a lot of links now have made this easier. So most employees now just encouraged to go to a a site. They could indicate that they made this donation and the paperwork is all done. So, for example, there’s, a company in new jersey that j k group that works with many of the fortune five hundred companies, and they have a website called easy match and you use easy match the processing for the nonprofit for the employees, for the corporations made much easier. Okay, e-giving listen, is the name of that company one more time? The company actually is kind of in the background, but their website is called easy match zizi match daikon. No, i’m sorry. E a s y m a c h dot com. Okay, hyre so what was what was the first piece of advice that you shared on building this magic gift? So one of the pieces of advice which actually wasn’t the first, but i’ll start with it is the benchmark with against your peers. So in different organizations, latto have different resources, there are organizations that have probably like yours that that i realize a greater percentage of matching gift dollars, and so when you’re actually looking at the opportunity. So for example, if your university, there were many universities, now that a matching five, six, seven percent of the total revenue with matching gifts. So if you’re doing one percent in your university, you’d say, well, how are they getting five percent to finally get one percent? If you are a public broadcasting station, good public broadcasting stations, air getting three or four percent, most public broadcasting stations are getting well under one percent so they can look at their numbers and they say, well, why am i not getting three or four percent? So it’s a good way by benchmark king first to quantify the game that you might realize really, it does vary considerably. Sounds like across different charitable vision. Well, it doesn’t, and in fact, the public broadcasting stations could probably achieve five, six, seven percent that they would need to actually start doing some of the things that comes more easily to a university, like knowing where their people work so university can collect that more easily. Where’s, the public broadcasting station might have more trouble finding out that you work for ibm, but but still the real issue is that if you know how well some of your better peers are performing, you can actually estimate what how much money is at stake for you. And then the actual practices are relatively easy. I joked in my presentation that there’s a surgeon, a tool go on, they wrote a great book called checklist manifesto, and he pointed out in the book that if doctors washed their hands, they would get ten thousand fewer patients a year would die of infections, and book doctors don’t always wash their hands. In fact, the substantial number don’t well, then matching gifts. The analogy is that if you want substantially more matching gift dollars, all you have to do is remember who matched last year and remind them when they give this year to match again. So it’s, not rocket science. But if you do it, you actually would boost your matching gets there’s a few practices like that that are relatively straight forward, okay. Okay, here’s, the rest of the chuck longfield interview my share, another short, simple fun i could find simple and fun that’s, right? So another one is is that a lot of people now moving, too websites to make donations it’s relatively easy to but on your website another line which says that if you work for a matching gift company, please match and you can actually hyper link it to the list of matching cos the twenty thousand companies so somebody, if they do work, they can click, they can look up apple computer, they click on apple computer indicate that they work for apple and the process can begin. And in fact, with somebody like apple, the next thing you’ll be directed to do is click on easy match and the process basically would be finished. Type in your employee i d number indicate that you made the gift and be off. Is that a list of twenty thousand proprietary? You have to be working. With a company to be ableto hyperlink super vis, yes, it’s actually it’s a very low cost and smith it’s made available by two companies, blackbaud is one kapin is and now the gp is another, and it costs about a thousand dollars to license the soft with the list of companies and an awful lot of companies already licensed. It put it on their website, but yes, a small and midsize non-profit that’s not doing that should do it because it’s relatively easy, and then the donor is self serving, servicing themselves, they’re indicating it moving on got another like he’s fun. Well, another one is, is that if you’re a regional non-profit so say europe non-profit in the houston market, houston, texas market and exxon mobil is a big employer in your market, or if you’re a bank of america and urine that their market, you can actually get their blank form. And if you know some of your employees work for exxon mobil, when you thank them, you can actually just send them the form or send them an email hyper linked directly to the exxon mobil website so they could go on, make a donation and it’s relatively easy to determine that some of these people work for exxon because they might already have volunteered their email address and their email address might be chuck it exxon dot com really pretty simple research making it so much easier for the donor hyre that’s correct. And in fact, if you look at the university’s universities that are getting this five, six, seven percent more money aren’t doing anything more than these basics, plus making sure they find out where you work. Okay, what our strategy for finding out where you work, we mention public radio probably doesn’t know that how can i help the small net size shop get that information? So probably the best way is, is that if you’re doing phone of john’s or any type of telemarketing speaking with your donors, so for example, in public broadcasting, they have pledge drives when the person calls it in pledges, you simply ask one more question, where do you work on whether your company matches and you’re off and running? If you do telemarketing you, khun called sometimes organizations calling thank their donors and you think you could ask him if they work for matching company? You can buy this data from song third party vendors. That source isn’t so great yet that that there isn’t really an easy way to give them a list of your donors and for a third party to actually tell you where they worked. But those companies are trying to get better at that. Linked in, obviously, is a celestine, so sometimes you can simply go online, and what a small and mid sized non-profit could be encouraged to do is just go online and look up your major donors. You’re bigger donorsearch sabat e-giving five hundred thousand dollars. Type them into lincoln, see if you can find out where they work it it’s, a matching company pursuit for a matching gift. So i made you die aggressive, too easy and fun. Are there other strategies? Wanna share that geever topic you’re talking about? No, you know, actually, i think the ironic thing about many of these things is that they’re actually relatively straightforward, you know, one of the things that is more complex and could actually make it easier, but easy matches is kind of doing away with it is some organizations can actually take the form, fill it out, fly you send it to you and all you have to do it, sign it and send it back in. And if you’re a national non-profit that’s hard because there’s so many matching gift forms, but it turns out in most cities in america, major cities, three of four, five companies represent eighty percent of the matching gifts in that area. So in many cases, you don’t have to work that hard for it. One other thing you could do, which is probably true of a small kruckel organization. That’s, right? That’s, right, it’s just, you know, most of the money is coming from the big employers in town. Now, one of the other things you could do which is kind of a clever thing, is that say, you know, you have a lot of people who work for a company and it doesn’t match gifts, but you may have twenty or thirty employees that worked for that company. What some people have found success in is actually just making a list of those thirty people are and going and visiting the company in their corporate relations and talking to them about what would you make a donation to us either because you’ll match your employees gifts or you’ll just make a donation, advertise it and you’ll know thirty of your employees is gonna be thrilled because they support the organization as well. And so it’s another way to engage companies and promoted and again universities have gotten very good at that practice is well and end up pursuing people. You have just about two more minutes. Okay, what else? I’m just gonna throw it out. What else would like to share around? Pretty simple teo to build scale? Yeah, that’s e-giving dahna well, the one thing thiss isn’t the technique, but just to show the opportunity when i said that there’s one point four billion dollars donated that’s about ten percent of corporate philanthropy, so corporations make many other donations to non-profits, but about ten percent of it is matching gift contributions. One point four billion that is less than, and in most cases fairly well, less than one percent off. When i said that there’s a five to seven percent opportunity and so there’s tremendous room toe actually raise total corporate philanthropy, matching of france will be by a billion. Two billion dollars. I had a question this morning about what that actually leads corporations to cut back on their match and give program, if all of a sudden what people were doing it. And i’ve talked to people both work in the company’s as well as other knowledgeable people. And they joked that it’s still such a small toe, a percentage of total corporate philanthropy that we could easily double it, and the corporations really wouldn’t block at it. So why definitely encourage non-profits to go after this money, and i think it will be there. Let’s, take that rationalization off the table. You’ll end up cutting us back if we do more often. Hm. Right now, i have the audio from my interview at the blackboard conference, and the subject is information architecture and user experience. Here’s that interview. Welcome to tony martignetti non-profit radio coverage of pecan twenty twelve. We’re outside washington d c at the gaylord convention center. My guests now are misting maclachlan she’s, principal user experience consultant at blackbaud and lisa kruger. I need information. Architect at blackboard. Ladies. Welcome. Thank you. Like it’s. A pleasure to have you both. Lacey, i have to ask you, what does a lead information architect do for a big company like blackbaud? I work with non-profit clients of all shapes and sizes at two. Really? Follow-up help create a intuitive structure for their content, so organizing the information they present on the website in a way that people that are using the website can understand it. Okay? And that really is sort of the definition of information architecture is this putting content together so that it’s argast to itiveness usable use your friendly all concerned about the user experience, right? It’s a it’s, a blueprint for a non line experience so it’s the structure of the information okay? And you’re topic that we’re talking about is getting your priorities straight. A guide to successful information architecture, misty let’s. See what? What’s the what’s the first idea that you have around information architectural start basic and we’re built for move up. Excellent. All right, so in my presentation, i outlined sort of a top ten list, like any good late night talk show host, anything that you can be doing, things that non-profits typically get wrong on websites, and i would say almost everything on my list more than half of the non-profits that we work with just get it wrong. So the number one thing that that i would say most non-cash labbate fail at and that’s, the most important online for kind of creating an effective experience for bringing people in and getting people to stay on their website, is articulating their mission in a really short, compelling, concise way that’s almost of the level of the vision of the organization. It’s, what is the social problem that we’re trying to address and what is our particular impact or approach on the world? Hyre we responding to that? What charity is doing wrong around around this? Well, typically, organizations have their mission. They know what their mission is. They want a present too much so they either air on the side of your five senses from my annual report, i’m going to put that right on my home page, which no one can read it super text heavy it boggs people down, people just don’t even see it or they just go for a tagline that might be cute, but it doesn’t. It doesn’t really talk about what the organization is doing, how they’re changing the world so particularly a new visitor coming into a website, they just can’t figure out if they’ve landed in the right place. People just lose tons of new traffic because they’re really true. You are the right size. They’re not even shit. Well, they mate, they made sort of think ellery, this organization has something to do with what i’m after, but it doesn’t seem like they’re really kind of making an impact or this isn’t necessarily the cause that i want to learn more about. I want to support so a lot of the time, if somebody’s coming to you through a google search, you don’t clearly articulate your mission. Just don’t get another chance, lacey. Now, in the last last session, i just learned like boxes. Sure, you both know, like, is this appropriate for for a light box on? Why don’t you explain it like boxes? Because everyone listening to this may not have heard the others weinger light boxes. This is totally just a neophyte question is a light box an appropriate place for you’re it’s, ice efficient state after you tell us what? Like boxes. Okay, so light boxes. It’s. Kind of a non obtrusive papa buy-in. It allows the user to see the content behind the papa. So it interrupts the experience with the message that the organization wants to get across. But you can still visualize what? Behind the message. So it’s really easy. Tio, click out of it and dismiss the message. A shaded bok’s ship you could see behind. Exactly. Yeah, my ideal fight question is, is that is that compelling? Is that compelling enough for light box? Having this concise, efficient, i would not suggest it. I think a lightbox a better use for a light box is something that has a specific action. You want users to take something like donate now or you take action or fill out this form or something. And with learning about the organization learning about their mission you really want them to explore. And, you know, click around and read different stories. You have, you know, it’s not just one thing. It’s it’s. A multitude of different inputs experience so it’s okay, if people have to click to find concise mission statement mr was talking about he used you said he wasn’t such a deal. Fight question. Maybe it’s important enough that it rises to the level of light box. But i understand it does well, where should it be? It should be something that comes across in the home page. So one of the things that we do is is way gauge a user’s reaction to the home page. So we show a home page to a user. This is a usability test. We show them the home page, and we say, what adjectives would you use to describe this page? And if those adjectives match your organization’s mission and your messaging, then you’re in good shape. But oftentimes they don’t that’s a basically a focus group for the home it’s. A usable yeah, basically it’s, a usability test, and you can do it online. So it’s, really quick, and you don’t have to get people all in the room together. That sounds a little sophisticated, but a small and midsize charity could probably do something like that. Maybe in a board meeting or a maybe they do host a little event or something like that if they don’t have in other words, if they don’t have the wherewithal to create something online. Is that is this doable in our little round table or something? Sure, another great place, great free place to get input from your users is your social media channels, so you could you could publish, you can publish a test like this for free online, and you can post a link to it on facebook or twitter and then people that are following you there can that conflict to it? Doesn’t your users so it’s a great freeway to recruit people to help? Okay, this deal will come back. You know the number to now. I know you don’t listen, do you know the same number ten? But mr knows it’s a top ten list presley roughly. Yeah. So what’s your throne. Another one. Whether whether it’s number two or not. Well well, never. Alright s o a few others but i think are worth mentioning. Wanna? Storytelling. One of the most important things in an organization could do is both tell and show the impact of its mission. So showing can happen in a couple of different forms, something like an infographic. We’re showing a few key statistics for those kind of analytical thinkers. Those people who are considering making an investment in the organization who want to know what kind of an impact you’re having. Something like an infographic on the home page that says we provide vaccination for fifty percent of the world’s children. That something unicef does powerful number that can visually represent that, in a way. That’s, really compelling talking alternative radio twenty four hours a day. Interested simply email at info at talking alternative dot com but they also do well, is they do this sort of show and tell of an individual who’s really being helped look at this two year old to receiving vaccinations and how it changed his family’s life, how it’s extended his life span, that kind of story telling us something that non-profits often don’t do. And when lacey and i talked to our guy notations and we actually go out and talk to their audience, the number one thing that people say they want more of universally stories, it’s stories that helped him get a feel for the emotional impact of the organization and make them connect to it. What are some of the best ways of telling these stories? Well, personal profiles are one way, and the organization could really kind of find a few kind of two faces and a few key stories. Another great way is actually to get people whose lives have been transformed to tell their own story and that’s. One of the ways the web is really powerful, that you can really solicit content from people who were personally involved are helped by the organization and get them to tell the story of what? Happened? How their life has changed as a result of it. Lacey telling it in what format? A week. Talking about video or its print or it’s all these or what? Video video is a great option. I think i think it’s important to have the text as well. The text as the substance of the story, but video. You know, if you have some video testimonials, those can be very powerful tools you do need you do need something to draw somebody and to make them want to watch the video. So it’s kind of a lot to ask for somebody to click and watch an entire video about something. But if you give them a preview of it and make them, you know, compelled toe watch it than video would be a great way to tell the full story. Do you have a place around? How long? Something like this should be a way to talk about drink this two or three minutes too? Increase the viewers or fifteen, ten, fifteen minutes? Yeah, i mean, i was short is better. Our attention spans are not what they used to be. So shorter is always better, i think. All right, so another, aside from sharing impact and outcomes, vividly least he wanted to give us another another idea around information architecture. So one idea that that we see a lot of is organizations that structure their content like their organization and structure so they, you know, they organize it by department four in-kind, you know, a different division that the organization works with, and while that makes a lot of sense to the organization and they can each kind of own a section of the website, it doesn’t make sense for their users. You know, i don’t know what your marketing department does versus your fund-raising department and i don’t i don’t really care, i just care kind of what are you doing on the ground? So i think i think, you know, using structures and labels that resonate with your users and not not necessarily your internal stakeholders users need to come first in their perspective, okay, how do we figure out how are users are thinking about our organization? Information should be yours, there’s various ways to research that on there’s some low cost ways. We’ve talked about smaller non-profit so i’m just talking to people. And asking them kind of what they think. There’s a there’s, a research technique called card sorting that you can present teo users a basically a set of cards with kant, the types of content you offer so these stories would be one of them, you know, news articles would be another one, events would be another one, and then you ask them to group things to group the content, according tto what makes sense to them, and then you can use that to really guide this structure of your website. Okay, is that where you want to say about that? Argast there are a ton of using research methods, and i think that this kind of gets to the heart of what user experience is, which is that we really take the approach that an organization has goals they want to achieve online, but the only way they’re going to do that is if they begin from the place of their audience. So they really research and map out and understand who these folks are. Lacey and i often develop personas, which are kind of detailed portrait of the major audience groups that our organization is trying to reach. Online or offline? And try to really understand what it is that’s driving and motivating that particular type of person and that tell me, organize content, we create an experience, okay, let’s, talk about it. This is interesting personas are hypothetical ideal oppcoll what do you know about these? Look what you create about. So we really try and make that a storytelling exercise, which is a demographic information with kind of fundamental it’s also attitudes, motivations, perceptions, behavior, schools, it’s sort of all the reasons that someone might be seeking out your organization, or that you might be trying to get them to be aware of who you are so they can also be aspirational. It doesn’t have to just be people that you’re reaching today, it could be people that you’re really trying to seek, but you failed to be able to connect with well, what’s great about personas is that they give you a framework kind of strategic, audience oriented framework as an organization to get your marketing department on your fund-raising department and your programs, folks all organized around the same type of folks, so that not just your website but you’re offline communications your email. Marketing their social media presence all of that is organized around this theme for audience groups it’s a really good internal tool for building consensus and getting people on the same page. Excellent. And i want to remind listeners that i had a guest. James is your tronvig group his work is around marketing. I talked a lot about building these personas also to some live in unconference i don’t remember the date of that show can can access it, but look for james on the block search for him as a guest, fine, very similar conversation, what we’re talking about right now creating these hypothetical personas, and he talked a lot about involving the board yes, especially in the aspirational persona, anything anything you want to add in that respect so it’s part of our process is that we begin with stakeholders, and we like to begin from the kind of all the way from the bottom, all the way to the top of the organization and everything so board is really critical, particularly board, because they removed from the day to day operations of the organization a lot of the time. But then the web folks with customer support people who answered the phone and they hear the kinds of complaints, but they really know who these folks are because they’re talking to them. So really at all levels of the organization trying to get stakeholder employed and then help people to kind of organize around these personas, including the board, because it can really shape the board’s vision of who you’re going after. Khun really molded it could be a tool for getting boardmember all on the same page with each other. Hoexter lacey let’s, go, teo. Another another good practices. Wait. Let me ask you for that either of you, major in information architecture is is such a major where? Yes, i am saying yes to you might not believe it, but i have a master’s degree and information architecture and usability. Okay. Yes. So there is a program out there in the online world. And i’ll just say it comes from the discipline of information science. So that’s, you know, organizing libraries, organizing videogames, organizing any place that’s an information or an interactive space. These kinds of principles apply. You could really learn a lot there. So that’s, the kind of background that i come from lacey comes from an interactive advertising backgrounds second, tell us where your master’s degree program hey, someone’s grief, they’re interested in such a degree. University of texas school of information how did you become an information architect? So i was an advertising major at the university of texas, and they had an interactive advertising sequence that was just a special series of classes that i took. And so that was the beginning, and then i did, you know, i worked in an ad agency for a while and then moved into the non-profit space that khun vo and and really worked with misty teo, develop our methodology around design and really dive into the information architecture. So anything so it was a slow transition on when i graduated in college in interactive was so new that there weren’t really information architects. So as soon as that niche kind of created itself, i found that that was where my home was. That was where i was meant to be. So i fear that all these years i’ve been mispronouncing the name of your former company convoy, and he wasn’t wrong via can be another reason it’s convenio and not cardio. It’s a schwab. They go back like fourth grade english and my homeroom teacher talking, you know, like more than a second green. So suave officials have you? Yes, i think that people sometimes go for they reach for convict. And so con vo seems like a natural stress, but actually in english. Apparently i’m married to a linguist way. Put the stress on the second to the last syllable in many cases. S o convene. Okay, that would be the italian pronunciation to yeah, very common with italians. Have accent on the second last that’s, right. And so in latin. Convenio means with vision and that’s where the name came from that’s how the founder information architect married to a witness. It’s true snusz lisa let’s. Talk about another. Another good practice in information architecture s o so one of the ones that comes to mind is creating a visual hierarchy. So on your home specifically one identify what the key points, the key messages you want to convey. So, like misty talked about earlier, your mission and vision should be number one on that there’s also, probably some actions that you wantto encourage from your home page. So i think that having a visual hierarchy that it’s basically a design principle that ensures that the big key salient points are what stands out visually on the page so they might be, you know, a different color, they might just be a graphic on next ism text, but the visual hyre he is what conveys to users look at me first, look at me. Second, intel is that kind of guys there experience around a page, okay? And you would develop that screw you users talking to users about how they are going through your sight versus how you’d like them to be going through your sight, or or do you do it more based around the way they’re doing so, whether you want them to or not? So the the inputs are both from the users and from the stakeholders. So our job as information architects is really to combine those two sometimes distinct set of needs, so the stakeholders wanted communicate x, y and z and the users are looking for, you know, a b and c and so it’s it’s a meshing together of those two things that that designates what the visual hierarchy should be. And that that’s sometimes a balancing act, but usually usually stakeholder messaging. What the organization wants to convey kind of comes first because it’s like this, this is what we want you to get across. Can i add one thing there? No dahna wrapped it up. It was perfect that your colleague is given insufficient explanation is that way work together a lot. So we tend to tag team this morning because of course, you’re welcome way often use web analytics data, i think one thing that’s hard, right? If you talk to people, people can often describe their attitudes and their motivations, but they don’t really know what they’re behaviors are there just sort of predicting? I think i would act like this. So analytics data is a really great kind of hard metric sort of way to look at trends and how people use an information structure, a website. What do they really interact with? What are they seeing? What are they not even saying so a lot of the time, you know, the kind of piece of this that we can bring in addition to research we really do with the audience surveys, that sort of thing. Is a really behavioral picture of how people are using the site, and that helps to really inform ways that we think people will use it what we can do with it. Okay, what are some of the ways that we influence? How they move through the site because it is simple is fun size? Lacey mentioned color it is simple in these things visual priority top to bottom orientation. Navigation is obviously the primary tool that people used to traverse when they’re really looking for something to move in and out of a website, you can do a lot that’s really powerful with having really strong navigation devices, um, and then they’re just a variety of ways that we can provide pathways into the content so you can throw all your content up there, and some people think that’s the solution that more is better, lacey and i really take the approach that more, more is not necessarily better if you have a ton of content, what you’re trying to do is move people strategically down paths towards the content that they’re looking for and that helping a lot of klicks is not necessarily a bad thing, but that used to be kind of the common wisdom with the web no clicks, you know, you really want people to get everything from the home page, but actually what people want is to feel like they’re on a journey towards the thing that they’re looking for, that they’re making progress, and if you can help them do that, they don’t actually mind moving around to find the thing that they want. Ladies, i’m going to guess that you have a lot of frustration as you you navigate the web, whether it’s, charitable or run or you’re not charitable sizing goto, who means a lot of frustration, there’s frustration, but there’s also a lot of inspiration. Um, i would say, you know, i didn’t major in information architecture, er and the majority of my training and education about this has been my own experiences online, so i learned a lot from other sides, you know, when i’m looking for something on amazon dot com and i confined it like that that’s something that i’ll take with me in translate to what we’re working on. So there’s good and bad there’s definitely some poor experiences out there, but there are good ones. Too wanted to share. What is it you love about information? Architecture works. I would say it’s very creative without being visual you create on it allows me to really kind of use my let to think about how things should be organized. And, um, you know, the graphic design part of it is is very important. But i think separating the information side of it from the graphic side of it allows for a bigger picture and allows for a cleaner in solution. And i think there’s also just so many facets to information architecture’s. So we designed the navigation structures and the way the continent looks on the page. But we also designed back in data structures and how a gn administrator would put the content into the system. So it’s just a big universe of on a different types of work. He’s the non he’s the editor of non-profit technology news he’s, a regular monthly technology contributor on twitter, he is at scott koegler konigstein are scott kottler welcome back. Thank you. Tell me, how you doing? I’m doing terrific. Get that down. Good. Thank you. You do too. We’re talking this this month a little about trends, trends that you saw in two thousand twelve as the editor over there at non-profit technology news. What did you see? Well, you know, there’s always a lot of things going on in one, probably non surprising thing was the increased use of social media. It’s just, you know, it’s almost a given that non-profit i need to participate in social media just like you’re doing, tony, you know, with your itunes and your show and the kind of things were there, but the corollary to that is that people are looking beyond the social media and beyond the traditional methods of getting together, which and that’s, really the more surprising to me is that there was a break from social media into more traditional meaning. Face-to-face or letter writing or what phone calls? What? You mean? Yeah, well, hit one of them, actually, but i throw out six things. I’m bound to hit something was about to hit a target with one shot. Yeah, phone calls, for instance. You know, i used to be that before social media before even all that kind of thing really depended on paper mail and phone calls, you know, if you had paper mail that was kind of general, but if you needed quick responses, if you needed to actually get a message to someone personally was phone calling dahna so as we start to move away from that and rely on facebook and twitter and those other kinds of things, it’s pretty easy to discard the more traditional methods of contacting folks. One of them is the phone calls. And you know, if your constituency is large, obviously making phone calls to the entire, uh, donor base or a participant bases is pretty impossible. That’s impractical. Maybe so we’re seeing we’re seeing more activity. And what phone trees. You know, the thing that churches and schools used to to contact the people? No one like when there’s a snow day like a snow. Day he’s like that, so they’re using. So you’re seeing you’re seeing non-profits enlisting volunteers to use in phone trees? No it’s, thie automated phone trees more often, you know that still technology hyre honor requires, you know, prior set up, but we’re finding that that that the phone is, you know, one of those ways that needs tio needs to be used sometimes, okay, are there are there providers that you’re aware of that that are good in automated phone tree work? You know, i don’t know who they are. We’ve had comments from a couple of, uh, back-up couple of non-profits that have used them, but my understanding is that the that they are locally based a lot of times, and some of them are actually equipment that you install so there’s a variety of things if you have a question about it, my my recommendation is going to go to your local church and ask them what they’re using because they’re probably have one installed somehow, okay? So going backwards in technology to get attention because people have been abandoning the phone just like they’ve been abandoning hand written notes exactly and there’s a couple of reasons. Aside from just you know, you want to contact somebody but one of the organizations that we talked to, uh, those events and, you know, there’s a change in the weather and you need to contact folks email is really not always going to get there. Not everybody has seen on their smartphone. Not everyone has a smartphone, and so being able to contact folks as there may be getting ready to go out the door it’s really important. So that’s, why the phone tree but there’s also another piece to that, and that is along with the fact that people you can’t get too may not get to email right away or in some cases again, depending on who your audience is may not even have e mail, and that is the text messages. And again, there are there are providers that can do what’s equivalent to an email blast by text message again that requires having at all set up and having your you know, your text, your phone number’s already installed and ready to go. Um, the text messaging is one of those very immediate contact method. So again, do you have a the event, the weather? Changes. You need to change the location or tell people that has been called off. Text messages is one of those not quite as retro as telephone. Direct telephone contact. Sure, but it’s, you know, it’s. Another another method. Ok, yeah, if you if you know your constituency has the has the technology. Um, i see text messaging, you know, going back to the phone. It’s. Interesting. I own a home in in north carolina, and the police department there uses automated phone tree to alert us to incoming bed whether hurricanes, there was a rash of burglaries in one neighborhood, not my neighborhood. Of course we’re we’re we’ll secure. I haven’t, you know? Yeah, but some in one of the lesser neighborhoods in that town, the police were saying that there have been burglaries people had been. And they got to the level of saying that the burglars were getting in a lot of times through the garage garage doors being left open. So, you know, they got to that level of detail in aa in a in our automated phone call. So you know, there’s a there’s, a town government using it and not a big towns small. Town north carolina? Yep, yeah, those technologies kind of reach everywhere, so and so wrapped up in what we’re talking about is figuring out what what is what makes sense for your you’re non-profit and your constituents, whoever they are you trying to reach exactly the point, tony it’s uh, not not all constituencies have, you know, our enthusiastic facebook users. So, you know, some are some, aren’t i, uh, i know that some of us older folks, you know, just don’t always live and die by facebook, so wei need to have other methods and, you know, not just older folks, but, uh, it really just depends. I mean, think about the disabled community, you know, they may have special, special needs in terms of being reached, you know, if you have a i don’t know death community, you know, you need some other way than just telephone, so lucy need the enhanced telephones. So now i see why you unfriended me on facebook you’re using this opportunity using this platform that i give you as as a way of explaining to me why you unfriended me on facebook, i guess because you don’t use it very often, right? So you figured, you know, i have tony as a friend as well, unfriended. Co-branded yeah, sorry, all right, um, but ok, so you’re a former ceo, chief, information officer. How do we go from recognizing what our needs are specific to our organization and finding the technology that’s going toe? Help us fulfill those needs? Good question, but then that’s what your baby, i try. It’s really a kind of a multilevel approach. First of all, you got yeah, you really have to think. I mean, hopefully, if you’re if you have a constituency, you have been able to connect with them. I mean, that’s kind of the whole point, and so you have some basic understanding of what their needs are, right? So so you need to just think about that, you know, how how do these people communicate? How what do i see when i when i talk with them, what do i experience when i’m when i’m with them? And of course, one another way that is maybe not quite so obvious is actually ask them, yeah, certainly would like to be communicated with, right? What? How did they get messages? Have a talk with people that are important to them to find that out on dh, then kind of pursue the the resolution for that just to research again, asking maybe other non-profits you know, a lot of intelligent non-profit activity out there, you might have, you might have expertise on your board, correct possibility if there’s a marketing communications person or if there’s a technology person um what’s your what’s your sense of, you know, technology consultants? I mean, are there people who who think broadly about technology or there, or there only consultants who work in phone trees or social media or, you know, other other other specific areas? Uh, yeah, of course, there are people who work only in specific technologies that generally called sales folks. Yeah, and, uh, you know, there are consultants to deal in social media and unfortunately, no that’s become kind of a commodity kind of a thing. I i saw a survey recently were there were, um just the term social media consultant has has become meaningless because everybody is one. Yeah, yeah, i see that i’m not on the more important way to go about it is to find find somebody who does consult on a broad range of of issues and isn’t really focused on anyone. Technology, uh, isn’t being paid to promote one specific thing, not not to put down social media experts, but it’s really it’s become a catchphrase? Yeah, that not everything is social media. You know, it’s, not the whole world. On twitter, i see so many people who call themselves social media either experts or gurus. Oh, yeah, guru is just so become become so ubiquitous that it is meaningless now, and i think every it seems like so many people who are just users of social media consider themselves now gurus and experts. So if you are looking for somebody in that area, you know, make sure they’ve been doing this for, you know, i mean, social media, ten years or so, ten or twelve years, it goes backto old social communities, there’s more than just facebook and twitter in social media, you know, early blogging was is certainly social media, so you want somebody who has, who has a breath of experience and many years, and i personally i tend to stay away from the people who are self proclaimed gurus. Um, i’m just kind of off the topic, but there is another way to check that out and to find out if somebody is, in fact, a social media guru, and i don’t really mean that. I mean, i mean, if they’re well connected and that’s really more important than being, you know, any particular label, i think we talked about this before there’s a site called clout k l o ut yes. Right? And it, uh, it takes a kind of a broad perspective. It is still based on social media, so it, uh, it takes into account traitor twitter, facebook, google plus link, then foursquare, youtube, the flicker, you know, all kinds of things, and it measures your influence of anybody’s influence on, um, you know, on those different areas. Yes. Okay, so you can pretty easily go on to clout and find find somebody’s measure, in fact, okay, hold that thought. We’re going to take a break right now. Dot com scott, what were going to say about clouds? Cloud is again a measurement of the social media in foot, right, quark, a variety of places. So what i was going to say was let’s, check tony um, and but you know what, tony? I did, and for better or worse, you and i have an equal score of fifty nine that’s humiliating to me what you’re equal to me. Yeah, because you said you don’t even use facebook thing is rigged. Forget cloud, alright, everybody listeners ignore what everything said everything that god said about cloud because it’s it’s clearly a charlotte in sight, it doesn’t doesn’t know what he’s talking about no it’s k l o ut clout, dot com and that’s interesting scott that we are that we’re equals it is and you’re not even trying. I know, i know, but you know just let’s. Look at the score for a second. Okay, fifty nine is actually not bad. Oh, they give you a rating for that fifteen out where it stands. You have fifty nine. I mean, if you just look at kind of the general, um, the seventy is like, almost the top of the rank really is for seventy is really, really good. Eighty is like superstar, um, fifties is, you know, is pretty good. So, you know, actually a fifty nine or sixties is actually you and i, tony, are among the influential gru’s there’s that word in social media. So without without really talking about you and me as we were talking about gurus and health, that term has really kind of become irrelevant. You can look at a sight like cloud, and there are a couple others that i can’t remember. They’re kind of up and comers, the cost been around the longest of those and so eh, it’s, war, you know above fifty is actually pretty good. Okay, so that person would have some credibility in social media, right? But and that’s a good way to check out somebody if they say they’re grew. Just put their ideas in cloud and we’ll see if they got a twenty five they want yeah, right. That’s, that’s. More like your grandmother, right? Grandfather’s? Exactly. Right. So we have a few more minutes left. What do you see coming as a trend in twenty thirteen or and maybe beyond, you know, specialization. I think the whole issue of using existing applications and existing tools in ways that they were designed, um, is what everybody does. The what’s coming now is using tools, system’s, applications, methodologies in new and different ways that we were not originally intended. Is what’s happening next? I think you know the phone tree. Text messaging. All those kind of things are becoming more and more viable again after all this time. Text messaging blast. You mean so right? Ok. Anything more specific that you can say about what you want? Oh, let’s, try it this way. What would you like to see? What would you like to see that’s not out there? I would like to see more, more personalized connections again if we just take text messaging, for instance, with email. If you’re sending out an email blast to your constituency, most email systems allow you to insert their name. You know, some information, all right on the flight. So it looks like it’s personal, even though you really know that it isn’t. But it would be nice to have that kind of capability with text message, even though they’re very short. Hey, tony, you know, i hope we show up today. We changed the location. Make sure you get the right place. You know, that kind of a message would be nice to be able to do, um and it used to be i think that text messaging in particular was kind of frowned upon because it was because it costs. The receiver money, and that hasn’t really changed except that now most phone plans include some number of text messages in their plan, so it’s a little bit less onerous on the recipient. Okay? And i think it’s always smart if you’re going to do that to offer a way of opting out absolutely no block, text block or text opt out or something back, and then the person is saying, i don’t want to incur the charges for any future messages that this center would might might send to me, right and that’s that’s the personalization. And along with the personalization is the method of contact when you sign up for a service, a lot of, uh, a lot of the services will say what? How would you prefer us to contact you? My voice by email, by text, whatever it might be. And so those kinds of personalization services can really go a long way too, you know, kind of solidifying that that connection between you and whoever it is that you’re trying to communicate with you. Okay, well, we’ll look for more, more personalization. Anything else you want to wrap up with? Scott? No. Tony let’s, let’s. Get out there and boost our krauz scores.
