Last Week’s Show
Last week was the Faceoff. An exhilarating show–I’m not exaggerating!–where Atlas of Giving and Giving USA dealt face-to-face with their issues about each other’s work. This is what Forbes.com dubbed the “philanthropy food fight” and I played cafeteria cop.

 
There were a few transgressions, but nothing unmanageable. (I did have to turn off someone’s mic.) A few jibes, but no Jargon Jail.

This Friday is Scott’s swan song. Editor of Nonprofit Technology News, he’s our longest running contributor, at close to three-and-a-half years! I decided to change topics (see below), and I don’t want to have more than four regulars. They are half the show and I want to keep half open for other brilliant guests.

Create A Culture Of Philanthropy Throughout Your Nonprofit

Last month I hosted a panel for AFP’s New York City chapter on creating a culture of philanthropy throughout your office: way beyond the development staff to include the CEO, finance office, program staff and facilities workers. Everybody.

The panelists were:
Terry Billie, Director of Corporate & Foundation Relations for Goodwill Industries of NY and NJ
Matthew Bregman, VP for Development at Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM)
Brian Saber, founder and president of Asking Matters

We had a lively, fun conversation over breakfast and there were lots of excellent questions from the audience!

Here are takeaways from our hour-long discussion:
— it has to start with the CEO; if your CEO embraces fundraising, the enthusiasm will trickle down
— each person in your organization can contribute to a positive fundraising culture; it can be as simple as a smile and “hello”
— everyone your staff meets should be treated as a donor; either they are or they could be
— over in finance, reports to funders should be seen as promoting fundraising, not as favors that help development staff
— your business and program departments should accept training from fundraising staff about simple ways to create a fundraising culture
— everybody else can accept training on how their jobs support fundraising
— it starts with hiring; consensus was that an enthusiastic attitude can make up for a lack of non-critical skills
— if you you’re constantly fighting to get fundraising recognized, it may not be the right place for you

PhilanthRecipe Redux: A Thanksgiving Side Dish Swap

I’m reviving PhilanthRecipe from 2011. Share a Thanksgiving side dish recipe!

Fourth quarter is busy and stressful. This is light and fun.

Got a Charity Cheese Sauce? Annual Fund Fritter? Or Nonprofit Nut Bread? Share it!

I’ll get us started with Amy Drum’s (my wife) recipe:

Compliance Cranberry Sauce
2 cups of water
1 3/4 to 2 cups of sugar
1 16 oz bag of cranberries

Combine sugar & water in a large saucepan and bring water to boil, stirring to dissolve sugar; boil rapidly for 5 minutes. Add cranberries. Cook, uncovered, over high heat 5 – 6 minutes until skins pop. Remove from heat and chill. If you want thicker sauce in order to mold, cook 10-12 minutes. To add a bit of flavor, you can add cinnamon sticks or orange zest and some orange juice.
