Alice aspen, march welcome to the show. Thank you, tony alice, there aren’t many people talking about paying attention and giving attention to others. What first do you mean when you’re talking about attention? Well, first of all, you’re right, nobody is talking about it like i am paying attention is the most important part of our lives because attention is with us twenty four seven and people know today when you’re not paying attention, especially when you’re on your cell phone or you’re texting or you’ve got your earphones on or you’re looking at your computer or your answering a phone, and people feel that what i mean by paying attention or being present is when you are listening to somebody when you are looking at them, when you’re in their energetic field and when you’re not, people can feel invisible or not respected or not included are angry and they they withdraw. They act out. The roots of your work are pretty personal. Yes, they are, because i have three adult sons. And one day i discovered that my youngest one, who had been a television addicts nobody was talking about that at all at that time had gone on to abuse drugs, and i was really terrified tony, that i could lose him. And so i went looking for the role i played in his dysfunctional behavior and att. First i changed my life, selby, but i didn’t know what i was looking for. It was very frustrating until i had an epiphany in a u c l a extension class. I lived in los angeles at the time. I had an epiphany over the word attention, and i knew that was a clue. So then i went looking for everywhere. I could find anything about it, and strangely enough, the on ly place iphone. It was attached to a d h d and a d day, and that wasn’t really what i was looking for. So i went further into the subject and i have a generalist mind. And pretty soon i realized i was reading about attention, but they never used the word. So in about a year, i had a body of work, which i took to a spot that i’d spoken at years before, and i realized that my subject matter resonated with everybody, because attention is everybody’s primary need my guest is alice aspen march, founder of the attention factor, and we’re taking your calls today. Tony, you’ve just said the magic words. Yes, the deprivation of attention leads two it can lead to disease, it can lead to violence it can lead to stealing in in corporate the corporate world, people need attention and when they don’t get it, they’ve got to act out. So when they do get the kind they need, of course, productivity goes up. Morale in a corporate world goes up people’s relationships change and our positive i’ve had people who have heard me on a ship or in europe or new zealand and say to me afterwards, i don’t believe this why haven’t we heard this before? You basically just change you saved my daughter’s life or i’m going home and treat my employees differently, or i’ve got to do something about my wife or now i know what’s been wrong in my marriage for forty three years, yes, is this is obviously pervasive work that you’re doing affecting personal and professional relationships and to bring it home for our listeners, i’m thinking about relationships with boardmember sze volunteers, co workers, co workers may be working for you or you’re working for them or against you when you mentioned violence that makes me think a little bit of that phrase going postal violence, that’s not the only place the postal service is not the only place where people where we’ve seen violence in the workplace, certainly, but it can rise to that level. And is your sense that a lot of that violence stems from people not being respected and getting attention in words of one syllable? Yes, and, you know, of course, that expression going postal came out of the post office. You see, an exit interview is vital for people that you’re letting go because it’s a closure for them, and if they don’t get that when they don’t get that, they feel invisible. And he certainly went back to the workplace and made himself visible by taking out a lot of people, you know? And even more recently, there was something in in binghamton, new york. Yes, on alison. How can we be better at giving attention? Well, first of all, you could turn off all your tech stuff. Okay. So, she’s vital. Vital tony? But, yes, you’re right know where we have we have kottler way have become immersed in a culture that does not listen does not listen to each other and it doesn’t seem to be getting any better. And people are feeling out there talking about that more. That he doesn’t listen to me or they don’t listen to me, or she doesn’t listen to me. We’re going to take a break. Mohr and you mentioned turning off our tech gadgets. What? What else? How else should we be bestowing the attention that is so much needed by the people we work with and live with? Well, certainly one way in a unique way. That’s not very usual is to ask them. Ask somebody what kind of attention would you like from me? And i could bet that they don’t even know. So the next sentence that you would share with them would be. You may not know right now what kind of attention you want from me. But when you figure it out, please call me. Please let me know. So i can either give it to you are we can talk about it o r o r it would make good conversation. So you think in a professional relationship that’s ah, that’s. A fair question to ask. Now, this is let’s say, boss and employee and the employees, i guess asking the boss what kind of attention do you need from me? Absolutely. Yes. First of all, it makes the employees feel visible that the boss really cares about her or him, and it opens up a whole world of communication. Absolutely. Alice, we have a caller. Barbara, welcome to the show, barbara how thank you what’s. Use your question for alice. Barbara. Well, the friends that i want, i know that i’ve turned with computers so that i’m giving her one hundred percent of my attention. Thank you. Also, i grieve if what you’re saying and i tried to do that, then how can you paying attention to someone when you, when you’re talking to someone who just talks in circles, who never gets to the point? And it could just get frustrating? In-kind that when that happens, my mind, i just go where had also focus, focus those difficult, sort of, maybe frustrating, even moments when someone isn’t getting to the point. Alice so what do we do, what we do in that situation? First of all, how do you feel when that happens? Barber to you, that’s important to realize how do you know when i’m not getting to the point. Yeah, well, you’re feeling frustrated, right? Okay, well, probably one thing you could certainly say to the person is i don’t think you’ve heard what i said because i’m feeling very frustrated about something right now. That’s a direct communication, okay, are you got to say that? Well, i’m sorry to hear that. I know they would have had to see that that’s a good thing to say, oh, good are i need you to repeat back what i’ve just said to you, so then i know that you got it because it’s really important, alice is clearly all about open communication that sounds like the advice that you’re giving not to be afraid to sort of, i guess, obviously politely but firmly ask for more, ask for the attention you’re seeking and in case of barbra’s question, ask for affirmation of what it is that you’re looking for are acknowledging tony, close communication doesn’t work, so you have to have open communication, but you have to know really what you need and if you need somebody to stop talking in circles, which is so really normal, you need that you have. To you have to let them know they’re really not getting you a zay said the way to get the way to alert them to that is to get to never repeat back what you’ve said, barber, does that help you? Alice let’s focus more on how we can be better at giving attention be more attentive. Eso you’ve mentioned turning off electronic devices? I mean, those air obviously distracting, and your point is people feel that distraction, um, asking for attention, asking what type of attention is being sought. Are there other ways that we can be better at this? Well, once you ask somebody what kind of attention they need and you start a conversation, you’re going to get lots of information, they’re going to tell you what they need and how to give it to them and and and miracles happen. First of all, you’ve got to know that way are three different kinds. Of people, some of us need attention visually, some of us needed auditory lee. Is that a word? Yeah, auditory and another. Some of us need a kinesthetic lee. And when you established in aesthetics is movement correct? Like i’m flailing my arms right now as i’m talking to you, right? Well, you can hear it in people speech. They will either say, you know, i really see what you’re talking about. I hear what you’ve said. I really don’t feel that well, that’s a big clue that comes from really listening when you get that clue, you could address that need in that person and put it in put your conversation in visual terms or auditory terms or keane aesthetic terms you don’t. I’d like to talk about retention. That’s a new popular issue right now, it’s not only an issue in in your area but it’s in the issue that i’m working with now college kids, you know it usedto only belong in the corporate world. They would talk about retention because people leave. There was a tremendous turnover. Well, college kids, they’re not leaving and trustees air now leaving and i believe firmly cause i hear this from enough people that they leave when they don’t get their needs met and their primary need is for attention. We’ve had a show actually about retaining the good employees that you work so hard to to recruit way look to recruit the best not only employees, but also board members and volunteers and it’s difficult for the organisation when there’s a lot of turnover. Um, your point is you think some of the this turnover could be reduced if people would just be more open about what they’re needs are around attention and fulfilling those needs. Toni, i’ve got lots of research in my files showing that employee turnover khun b reduced when employees start to get the kind of attention they are they need, and i’ve worked with a group. The bottom line personal publication corporation had a fall fabulous experience. It was an experiment. It was called i power. Yes, tell us and they were losing a publication and they had tremendous turnover and stress in their workplace. And they developed this experience where they got their employees to tell them how they felt they could do their job better. There was a process involved in this. But not only did employ turnover cease, the bottom line went up and and the hundreds of dollars were saved in tiny ways, because employees know about waist and they really don’t want to waste their time, nor their owners resource is that it was a miracle. I took that course twice to see if they were doing what i wanted them to do, and they were a fabulous story. Fabulous. This reminds me two of something that was in the is in the news very recently, there’s ah, a university, harrisburg university of science and technology. They’ve decided that for one week they were going to turn off access to all social media to the students so there would be no text messaging, no facebook access, no twitter access for for a solid week and these air all the sorts of distracters that you’re talking about and what happened? No, they haven’t done it yet, it’s coming on, i do it. I would like to know what they’re going to do. I mean, how it turns out, you know, there was a president of santa monica college when i lived there who decreed dead for one hour, just one hour a week, his staff and his service people would do nothing but read that’s. What he proclaimed and the whole campus changed. People were starting to talk to each other again. The gardeners were talking to the only students because everybody want to know what the other person was reading. The point is, we need that in our lives. We need a turnoff. We need to start looking at people and paying attention. You know, i just moved to new york from los angeles where i spent my life in a car isolated the difference. And living here is so overwhelming because i take the bus is i take the subways and i look at people and i talked to people. People are people, people are people all over and they want to be talked to. They want to be looked at. They want to get directions if they look like they’re lost. I stopped. I stopped a couple of the other day in grand central station because the man was taking a photograph of his wife and i said to him, how would you like me to take a picture of both of you and this guy? Smile? From ear to ear, he couldn’t believe it. A small gesture. You and i met on the subway. We met on the atria. We did did that’s how we met on the time we got to know each other. If someone has a difficult relationship with let’s, say a boardmember because that’s, those can be sometimes the most the most excruciating. Ah, they where should they really start to try toe engage the person mohr or teo sort of hell. The relationship. Well, i think if you really know that the relationship is out or not working, you ask him out for lunch and you say, you know, i’d like to talk to you about a few things and that’s when you could say, you know, i get that there’s not a lot of attention around here. What kind would you like? Are we are we scheduling meetings at the wrong time? Are you being harassed by my staff? Are you getting too many emails? But, you know, over food, some wonderful things happen, and generally a person when you’re eating with him will be more comfortable and feels safer. Ah, and you could ask him, of course, if this is a good time to talk about what’s going on that the non-profit you’ve gotta enroll, people enroll in an engage in rolling and gay just asked permission permission for what? I ask permission to talk to him about what’s going on at the non-profit that is attention. I happen to like your idea of sharing a meal with someone it’s, it’s, it’s, a physical, sharing your sharing a physical space, the table. I also like that meals in a restaurant are timed. We know the flow exam there also are going to be the office interruptions because you’re out of the office and adhering to your advice, you’ve turned off your cell phone. You want to be attentive to this person? So you have you’ve eliminated distractions, hopefully, and then there’s the physical level of the physical, but the sharing of a meal and be sure you pick up the bill don’t let him i want to give you another example that occurred in one of my workshops. Ah woman’s boss would call her in for a meeting, and either he was on the phone or on his computer or texting or something, and the meetings were generally disasters. Because he would give her moments. And she said, what could i do? And i said, next time you see him in the hall say, could i have seven minutes of your time with no interruption? You know, if somebody hears is a beginning and the end, they can handle that. And so they a set aside a seven minute time and went in, and they had the meeting with no interruptions. And he was the one at the end of the meeting. Who said, you know, this has been the best meeting we’ve ever had in just a brief period. Yes. And she was she was elated because when she walked out of his office before she felt deflated, depressed, un respected and areva nails particularly invisible, which is a terrible place to be and they were able to turn it around in just a seven minute meeting. That’s, right without interruption. You doing a five minute meeting? Alison? Just a minute. We have left. This also gets me thinking about two types of people. Are you actually think of the movie pulp fiction? The scene with uma thurman and and john travolta? Are you the kind of person? Who listens or either kind of person who waits to talk? Yeah, good question. There are both in our land and i’ve been guilty of both. So i am particularly joining the first group where i listen until the people are really done. And you know, tony, i’ve had people say to me, you know, you’re really a good lister, so i know that it’s happening for them. Well, john travolta would admire you because he answers that he’s the kind of person who waits to talk, but he says he’s working on it. Alice, we have to leave it there. We were in the leona helmsley suite, which was very nice that actually used to be the only helmsley’s home, so you could imagine it quite an opulent suite overlooking central park set on the forty sixth floor, and we had about fifty guests at the reception when it was a very lovely night, i interviewed naomi levine, who is the executive director of new york university’s heimans center for philanthropy and fund-raising and i’ll be broadcasting that interview with her on a future show coming up shortly. Also this week’s blawg post. Why i do radio i was at the nbc studio tour about a month or so ago with some friends who were visiting from outside new york, and we took the studio tour, and at the end of the tour, they asked for volunteers who want to record something in the newsroom. And as i’ve been doing since third grade, the mistake i’ve been making since third grade, i shot my handup and i volunteered and i ended up doing the weather for a brief newscast so you can see that video of me doing whether in the nbc studio on my blogged at m p g a d v dot com and i called the post me doing tv why i do radio that’s tony’s take two for friday, may twentieth with me now is scott koegler, of course, he’s, our regular tech contributor, he’s, the editor of non-profit technology news and we’re going to talk about how have people pay attention to your well website? Welcome, scott, how you doing? I’m good tony, how you terrific pleasure to have you back. Good to be here. All right, let’s, talk about websites and i’d like to just actually start with the name of the website the domain name. You have some advice around domain name for website i do i have funny of one of the things is that if you have a website, if they have one that was generated with one of the free utilities and your domain name, maybe something like by non-profit dot, three webs st dot com and you know it works. It gets people there but it’s not catching e i mean, people may know the name of your non-profit but they’re probably going to type in something more like my non-profit dot com or my non-profit dot or something. So the first suggestion is get your get your own domain name and they’re readily available, you know, for non-profits is typical to get the dot or ge extension. Typically, those will run ten to fifteen dollars, a year. They, uh and even if you already have one of those free websites that i just referred to generally use and replace the default pompel name that’s been given to it with your own domain name. Okay? And how does an organization by the domain name were first, you know, find out whether it’s available or whether they have to be a little creative? Maybe teo find availability. How does one do that process? How do you know what’s available? And then how do you do actually buy it? I have pretty much used go daddy, dot com or all of my domain names out there. There are some reasons that folks may not want to use go daddy, dot com now, those there’s a lot of political stuff going on around that, but my by much. More pragmatic than that, it works is cheap it’s, easy to use and advantages by thirty or so domain names pretty easily. Okay. Oh, let’s, stop you there. So so one person or one organization can own multiple domain names absolutely typically a comfortable on the set of domain names around their company names. So if my organization name is my non-profit, i will want to get domain name by not-for-profits not orders and probably dot net maybe dot info and even maybe dot com, though there we’ve got five domain names that’s going to be probably fifty dollars, per year. Okay, so not expensive, but you’re trying to buy all the all the possibilities around your name so that somebody else doesn’t exploited. And then you’re constituents get confused. Basically, is that it? Exactly? Okay. On dso really? So and as little as ten dollars, per year per domain name as little as yes, some of them are a little bit more expensive and some are ridiculously expensive, you know, in the hundreds of dollars, but the ones we’re we’re talking about here typically ten to fifteen dollars. Okay, so go, daddy dot com that’s a sight you’re recommending. For research, and then you also buy it through through them he simply type in there’s about as soon as you go there, you’ll see a domain name and that’s kind of like a search bar right across the top, and the most obvious thing to do is just type in the name of your organization and hit enter and they’ll come back and immediately. And they say this is available or it’s not available. It’s not available, it’ll will suggest alternatives for you, so i won’t get into what those might be. But it automatic it’s a great tool. It’s really kind of guide you to it. Ok? And if the name that you want precisely is not available that’s why i was suggesting earlier you might have to get a little creative with some variations or i guess using hyphens things like that. Okay, i don’t want to go too far straight because you do want people that were looking for you to be able tio type in your organization name as closely as possible. Of course. All right on dh. Then you have advice about email accounts also using the same name. Right? Right. Once you have. A domain name, then you khun sign email accounts to that domain. So if you have a volunteer ten volunteers in your organization and maybe three staff members, the chances are that right now, if you don’t have a domain name that each one of those people is goingto have their own email address is going to be, you know, hotmail, dot com or gmail or, you know who knows what? And it’s very it’s tough or people on the other end, people receiving e mail from them to immediately recognize that they’re part of your organization. So with the domain name that is assigned to your organization, you can typically and again prices vary and facilities very go. Daddy does have that facility and i can’t remember off hand how much they cost. Ok, so that’s something you’d you’d pay for additional isto have email accounts with that domain name, but your point being it’s worth it for identity it is and whether it’s traditional price or not depends on the the provider. Ok, if left you the credibility and the direct relationship so people get a an email from scott, my non-profit dot com they know that i’m with non-profit dot com. And they get scott at gmail dot com. They have no idea who that is. Yeah, it sounds like you know, you sound like you. You appear to be a more professional, more together organization that way. Yeah. And i would argue that this by the fact that doing that you actually are okay. All right, well, it’s the reality as well as the perception. Okay, if we could get both that’s great here, sam. Shallow. I just go for the perception. I’m all facade, it’s, all plastic. But scott is a genuine person. He goes for the death and reality depth of character. Not like me. What? So let’s, talk about some features. Okay, so you have your domain name and you got your email accounts affiliated with it as right? Exactly your non-profit name, or as close as you can get. What do you like to see on that site so that people pay attention to it and come back? No, in a variety of things. Okay. Let’s, let’s. Just take them in. No particular order. Okay? Content is king. So you need to be able to post updates and easiest way to do. That is what people normally consider a block. You know, a blogger is really just a bunch of articles that are listed in typically and dates sequential order. So you know, school down the list to see today just yesterday as you see the day before content needs to be on your site and give people a reason to come back. And that also, if you’re updating your block regularly keeps people a reason to come back because there’s fresh content yeah, exactly. And hopefully you’re being interesting and people talk about subscribing to blog’s. I have that on my website. What does that mean to subscribe to a blogger? Subscribe is simply telling the website hey, tell me when there’s a new blogged posted and there’s a variety was doing that, one of the most popular for website is what’s called a okay what’s jargon jail. Now, are you teetering on the edge of george in jail? You have to explain what are ss is our stands for really simple syndication, okay? And that by itself means almost as much as our ss. But what it does is it allows you to use a tool like google reader to bring that information either into google reader or actually into your email, so essentially i post a new block item to my website and your subscribe to it you’ll actually get a copy of that in your email. Oh, you get a copy of the block post in the email, not just a notice that there is a new block post get a link to it and probably the first. Okay, okay, so the description is email course that that’s a whole different topic, but yeah, well, we can talk about that, and and i want to remind people to that that’s something scott and i talked about when we did a feature called fabulous facebook, which was talking about your organization’s facebook page and that the remind i’m reminded of that conversation because one of the things got recommended was having of youth utility there, where people could sign up to get email messages from you. Get your regular email messages from the facebook page where they could sign up, and that was the february twenty fifth show. This year, it was called fabulous facebook. Okay, so keeping people current with your with your your blogged is it isn’t. It pretty common now that the block really is the website scott difficult? Yes, the block generally makes up most of the content of the website. And yeah, so that’s s o i think just, you know, a couple of years ago way used to seymour where there was a website opening page, and then there’d be a link to a block inside. But i see more now that the block is the opening page and i know that’s how i do it on my site, but i’m not saying that because i do. I’m following the trend. I didn’t create it and you mentioned facebook. One of one of the other subscription methods on this needs to be a feature of the website itself is that if you post a new block in addition to posting it to the speed, it will also automatically posted both to facebook and twitter. So all right, essentially, what happens is if a visitor looks the like button on the website and of course that’s, a feature that has to be enabled us. Well, then, that the person like the website and the here backed of liking the website in the function that is built into the website and then take that new block post and posted directly to facebook. So if your main interaction with the internet is facebook, it’s gonna pop up in your stream, okay, so you’re you’ve posted to your blogged and people who like your blogged meaning like it, as in facebook, like they’ll they’ll get your new block post on their wall. Is that right? Okay, all right, so these are a lot of these are a lot of interesting features. I mean, how do you build all these little things in, like posting to twitter automatically when you post a block or adding the like button functionality to your website? How did these little things get in there? Sometimes? It’s easy, sometimes it’s not cans on who’s setting up your web site depends on your website provider because on the tool, the i think previously talked about webs that you’re using, we’re pressed. Yes, we have talked about wordpress, right? And my my tool of choice is juma, and, uh, i know that i’m not familiar with that much with wordpress, although i believe that since it’s still popular, probably those incorporate or at least have yes, ability to incorporate some of these features and that’s the same thing with julia. Would scott wanted us spell jew melissa and give the earl for it to j o m l a and it’s a dot or gall, though dot com will get there as well? Ok, it’s open source free doesn’t mean that it’s that every part of its free but open source software, you could make use of it and that’s for creating a website that would include a blogger or creating a blogged that is the website. Yeah, it’s, kind of a little different from work best, which really started life as a blogging applications juma is what’s termed a content management system, and so one of the things that it manages out is a lot, but it also convicted advertising hyre wake up and we’re going to get to that after the break. Dot com scott about thiss online giving importance to a website important non-profits absolute and again it’s one of those functions that needs to be added to a website. Some tools make it pretty easy. Some require additional programming. Again, i’m really with julia and it’s, one of those add ons that can be put in a pretty, pretty easily. Most of these go to paypal, which is, you know, pretty easy to do. Yeah, i think that it’s generally recognized me there, and even with paypal, you can accept credit cards. Yeah, that is very common. And we did talk about that previously. Also on that february twenty fifth show. What about keeping your people your constituents? Apprised of what’s going on through, like through newsletters? How can your blogged support your newsletter activity? The easiest way is to use the block entries that you put in as just part of your normal update a cz your newsletter comes and that’s an alternative way of getting information to your constituents out an alternative who either the speed or the or the facebook updates. I personally like those letters because it gives me the opportunity to select out the articles that i want to present i could put him in the order that i want, i can add images, pictures, links to other what other resource is within it? And, uh, again, depending on the tool that you’re using, whether it’s, we’re press or junior or some other tool, there are functions that make it easy to say, okay, but this article, this article, this article put him in this order and send up main now almost. Okay, so now you’re repurpose ing your blawg articles for your e newsletter because i’m just so people know we’re talking about an online newsletter and e newsletter that people are going to get. My email, right? Yeah, but now that i don’t know what if people are regularly subscribing to your block, then your newsletter is kind of redundant for them. No, it can be. Some people like to get consolidated, but, of course, you need to be able to allow people to opt out of any of their subscriptions. Whether the newsletter subscription argast. Sabelo let them have that flexibility, okay? They’re complaining completely. Yeah, you’re breaking up a little bit there, so i’m just gonna repeat just a part of what you said, which was you need to give people the opportunity, the option to opt out so that if they are subscribing to your r s s feed getting your block posts the way scott described, maybe they want to opt out of getting your e newsletter, right? Okay, what should this thing this this website look like? Good question and that that’s really open to it kind of hyre the style of the organization, i mean, some can be very formal, some can be very informal. The good thing about most of these again, i’ll talk about weird press, and juma is that there is pretty much an unlimited supply of what’s called templates, and you can apply a template to your website and give it a new look and even change it. You can even change it from page to page if you want to, but the design really is a matter of taste and making sure that it fits within the overall style and perhaps not only style, but you might want to deviate from those templates to have ah, designer who’s goingto do something so that your site is identical to the rest of your visual identity. Yeah, can you? Usually if you are using the templates, can you can you usually import your own artwork so that you can at least have elements that are the same? Like, i mean, you want to bring your logo and if that’s possible is that is that kind of functionality? Absolutely. Those air parts of the initial sped up generally. And because of the way these things were made, there’s usually quite a bit of online help that either can say you go on to the support sessions and you say, how do i do this? Forgive you inspections for you pay a few dollars, get someone too, actually customized to exactly the way, okay? And you find the online help to be actually helpful. Decently robust? Yeah, they’re very good people. He’s kind of systems are, i guess mildly put it fanatical what they do. Okay? And so i think an important message for small shops is that you’re not alone. You’re probably not the first person to have. Encountered a problem with juma or wordpress? Used. Use the online help resource is all right. Wait just a couple minutes left. You know what i find always annoying tio have to look for and sometimes i don’t find it is a way of contacting the organization. You know, i’d like to go beyond your blogged. I’d liketo actually maybe talk to somebody. Or or at least we have the chance to email somebody. And sometimes you can’t find that so easily what’s your thoughts on contact. Well, the standard is at the bottom of the page. There’s a length that says contact their standard that’s pretty much always there. But, you know, certainly those states not they’re pretty frustrating, depending on how important it is the organization’s actually get contact. He may want make-a-wish prominent as the donate, but okay, and again, you were cutting out a little bit. So you’re you’re advice to make the contact button as prominent as the donate button if that’s important to your organization. Yeah, i know that’s the standard down at the bottom that should be looked contact, but and that’s, the first place i look, but sometimes it’s not there, and i have to go hunting for howto email somebody or send it if it’s not an e mail, send a message using the site ondo that crucible frustration leased for may. You don’t want your visitors to be frustrated that, uh, that’s a big deal, i frustrate easily, you know, because i’m shallow person. So it it all goes it’s all consistent with the shallowness and the facade and the perception it’s, it’s all bundled together and something that i need to talk to my therapist about, okay, we have just like a minute left. Scott, what about having a community? Is that like a place where other people who love love your organization, khun gather, is that worth doing? Or should that just be your facebook? Your organization’s facebook page? It depends on your community like everything else like you. Facebook is great if you want to have a relatively open community. What two people engaged it’s entirely possible to build a community function into your website. Juma has a couple of these that air very much facebook like except that they’re closed community. So information and conversations that go on inside that community, stay there, they’re not public. As they are pretty much in the on facebook and the other thing is that, uh, if you can set up your own terms and conditions of that that are much more favorable to those people that use it. In other words, facebook, anything you put on facebook is the property of facebook and they can do anything they want to, and you can kind of go the opposite direction of that say, ok, if you post anything here, you could take it off any time you want it’s your property if you put a picture up it’s your property and, you know, so sometimes it’s more advantageous to have this kind of locked up communities than it is to be open to the world. So it really eso it really depends on what the character of your community is that you wanted to be, scott, we have to leave it there. Then in the studio, i had john bacon and alexandra brovey they’re officers of the philanthropic planning group of greater new york, and they talked about the group’s conference, the philanthropic planning symposium on may sixteenth this week, a conversation with craig newmark and everlasting endowment. He’s, originally from morristown, new jersey, now lives in san francisco, where he’s calling from and i’m very glad that his new venture, craigconnects dot or ge, brings him to the show. Craig, come hey, i’m really glad craig say something else, would you have you cut out a little bit? Thank you very much. Glad to have you it’s a pleasure craigconnects dot or ge? Not even quite two months old yet. What will people find when they go there? At this point, it’ll find me basically standing up for non-profits on related causes that i believe in beyond that there’s, some discussion on how i can move on and do a better job from there. And why did you start? Craigconnects well, for maybe ten years, i’ve been solely supporting non-profits and so on sometimes in trivial ways, sometimes in a substantive ways. Several months ago asked someone to lift him in the eye supported, i thought maybe twenty or thirty closer to one hundred out, you know, things like that get my act together. So this is a more organized way. Tio support your non-profit interests. What are some of the non-profits that air highlighted on craigconnects now, craig? Well, there’s a number of groups for example, consumer reports, which actually does a really big job for assault totally in a you know, appliance reviews, but others, and then there’s the iraq and afghanistan, veterans of america, there’s, sunlight foundation, bothersome groups i work with askanase it’s a pretty long list, i’m trying to re balance it and figure out what makes sense because i got to do a better and better job. Okay, and how do you decide which non-profits will be highlighted on craigconnects sometimes i’m just winging it if they’re doing something that i can actually understand on somehow make sense to me that i get involved, i should make it more methodical, but right now, it’s based on the help from advisers and also experience. Ok, yeah, you do have advisors. I know. Oppcoll the some of the sites that you are, some of the organizations that are highlighted there, i see you’re listed as either an advisor to them or a boardmember to them. Is there any compensation involved in your relationship with those organizations that are highlighted no compensation, except for some occasional reimbursement of travel expenses? Actually, my net causes significant because, for the most part, in my own way, okay, i just i want people to know, you know that there isn’t a quid pro quo thereabout, that the with with the charities that you’re highlighting among the group that you’re highlighting, they fall into certain areas, right certain support areas. Uh, they, too, generally speaking, like i’m trying to help out military families and veterans. I’m also doing some work with non-profit news outlet, trying to help but with the future of journalism. Do you want to mention a couple of the other support areas? Well, there is the whole idea of government accountability and transparency. There’s, the idea of trying to get fresh water and sanitation to the developing world. There’s, the subject of mideast peace, specifically between israel and palestine. The list is larger than i’m letting on, because i’m still learning my way around. I’m out of my depth, but that’s a way of life for me now, living out of your comfort zone. You mean, yeah, that’s, the idea. I’m a nerd. I’m more comfortable, sometimes with systems, but i got to get out there. All right? And since you said that, i want to thank you for doing a live interview, i know you don’t do too many live interview, so this is really very, very special for us. So thank you for thanks for being on the show again and doing it live. You’re are you envisioning anything that helps donors that wantto support thes charities that are highlighted. The biggest efforts that i’m involved with are with those non-profits which themselves help people figure out what non-profits are legitimate, and i need a contribution, or so that includes charting navigator. It includes guide star and great non-profits dot or ge. Yeah, why don’t you say a word about great non-profits dot or ge? Well, grayce non-profits dot org’s is kind of a yelp for non-profit specifically, you can go on there, check out the non-profits you support and, you know, add your voice that support. Alternatively, if you’re looking for good ones to support boat coming out, i’m great. You can see what other people are thinking. So it’s ah, review board, essentially for non-profits good, positive and negative. You got the idea on that, like yelled like yelp, and that was and that’s great. Non-profits yeah, i’m concerned that there’s a lot of non-profits out there, which can tell a good heart wrenching story. They’re cashing your check, but it’s taking a result, there’s, not a lot of them out there that they make a lot of noise. Okay, we’re going to take a break right now. What advice do you have for small non-profits around social media? Craig r have we lost? Greg? We have lost greg oh, okay, so it’s time to do a little tap dance bonem so happens that today is ah, blue pedicure challenge day, and what that means is i fulfilled my side of the bargain. Ah bunch of high school friends challenged me too. Um get my toes painted blue if they could get me to three hundred likes on the show’s facebook page, and they had to do that within just a few days and they did it, and this morning i got my blue pedicure, so in the studio were wearing my money blue pedicure, and if you were listening to the previous show, the divorce, our with larry bloom, you’ll understand why he said that i’d be talking about my toes today. Talking about his sight craigconnects dot org’s, you may want to go there, take a look, you’ll see how he blog’s about charities that he and his advisers find interesting and valuable, and we should be a minute or so to get craig back. But if you go to craigconnects dot org’s, you’ll see the format of the site, and as craig said, it is evolving. Ondas i you heard me ask him it’s only less than two months old, so there is some parallel, i think, between the way craigslist got started and the way craigconnects is getting started, and shortly i’ll have a chance to ask him about that. Um, but you’ll see that he blog’s about, um, charities that he finds interesting and doing good work, and they’re in these seven support areas. He mentioned a couple of them veterans and news outlets and government transparency and accountability. Those air just a couple of the support areas there are there are seven altogether that the site will highlight. Andi should, as i said, we should have craig very shortly. Hyre you know that the second guest in this show will be kathleen rittereiser and that’s a previously recorded interview and i’ll be talking with her about endowment management. The book that she co authored is foundation and endowment investing that will be in the second half of the hour. And i understand we have craig mack right now, craig, you with us? I’m here. Okay, sorry about that. I don’t know what happened. You didn’t hang up on us, did you? Okay. All right. You know a thing or two about technology it’s not always a hundred percent that’s. How you know the show is live because things go wrong before the break we were you started to mention telling this story, getting non-profits out there to tell their story. What’s your advice for small and midsize non-profits around the more established social media you know, twitter, facebook people are interested in your opinion because you’ve made a name in social media. Well, i’ve only learned a few things i can and sometimes the hard way. Those were the best learned lesson. Yeah, they have to be prepared to engage with their their community. Not only the kinds they serve, but the people who might be making contributions of some sort. You have to have a careful brief message. They gotta be framed, right? And then you just got to keep delivering it, maybe every day or so, and you can use twitter and facebook to do that. The deal is have a nice, simple message. Keep it short, get it out there, and then get out again. And what if the non-profit is really small? I mean, suppose it’s just a couple of people in the office and their concern is about abila, you know, keeping up a facebook page or twitter stream the deal is that they may have to put in the extra time to keep getting the word out. It’ll be tough, and this kind of engagement is more than a full time job, but it means you’re talking with people. You could build your own schedule and do it makes sense get a good network going, and they’ll shoulder some of the burden for you because people will start to carry on a conversation with you and they’ll start teo contribute oppcoll the deal is over time, just stay for riel over time you build up genuine for network word of mouth that works, even cover the patient and committed to it for years. And i think there’s ah, really direct parallel between what you’re suggesting for small shops on the way craigconnects is rapidly evolving and the way craigslist got started. Uh, yep, the deal is that right now, bright connects is a small shop arm online what seems like a ll the time and keep plugging away. If i’m in front of a system of any sort, i’ve got. E mail, facebook and twitter windows open. And just the the advice that, you know, things evolve over time, right? I mean, you jumped in as you said, not really knowing what this will look like, right on my right. You don’t really know what it will look like, say, a year or two years from now that’s my whole history, it applies to craigslist. It applies the non-profits stuff i’m doing, sometimes you get involved, then you listen and act on feedback and then be prepared to repeat that. Listen and then action, michael forever. Yeah, excellent and that’s. What small non-profits small charities khun do around their own social media? Yeah, it’s true of small and argument large organizations of all sorts, it applies to premature it. You know, we did get a question in advance from this one came from the innovative fund-raising and philanthropic innovation network forum on linkedin out the name of the organization writing is de blam e integrated rescue project craig and they ask, how can i fundraise best online? I’ve written many blog’s spread the word on social network sites, they ask, how is fun? Is online fund-raising best done by big agencies? Bonem i no authority on this, what i’ve observed working, it is simply like i mentioned before. He’d have to cultivate a network long term. It has to be for real need to get the word out to people. And if they believe in what you’re doing, they get the word out to other people and that’s what i understand. It’s, bottom up, food stuff, yeah, bottom up, grassroots, that’s, how craigslist started, and that’s, what you’re trying to do with craigconnects can you? Can you say a little more about why you think that’s, the way to get started? Well, to be real honest, i don’t understand a top down stuff. It doesn’t seem terribly effectively that tradition sometimes means you do an event. One day he gets covered the next and forgotten the day after. Well, i know is, like a very small way, eh? Day after day after day. And as a non-profit is thinking about their own social media work there, they can be thinking about the ground up, the grassroots process, using maybe people who are working for them, or people who are getting ben it, benefiting from their services. All the above, people are frequently willing to pitch in and lend a hand. Yeah, and that comes from a love of that charitable mission. Then we’re just trying. Teo seems like to move online. You’re just tryingto extend the passion that people feel for a mission and have them help it in a different way. I agree. You don’t need teo work with the people who will do. And the idea is that people i’m hoping we’ll get in the habit of one obstacle is donorsearch. Because, you know, in totality, we’re asking for people’s time and money in different forms. Yes. And your e think you might have cut out a little bit on the phone, but your concern was about donorsearch fatigue. Is that what you said? Okay, yeah, talked about dahna fifteen, meaning that, well, increasingly and subsectors, people are spending less money or time on non-profit because they don’t know when they’re well, non-profit is legitimate or a fake, and how is craigconnects goingto help people make that distinction? Well, the theme is to work with those non-profit, which help evaluate other non-profit like charity navigator, you know, guide, star and great non-profit like i mentioned before, i’m trying to help them in small ways, like helping them prevent people from gaming systems. Yes, and then i’m pointing large numbers of people to those sites. I’m with craig newmark he’s, the founder of craigslist. We’re talking today about his newest venture, craigconnects ts dot or ge. Craig, if if a non-profit wants to be highlighted on craigconnects, how could they do that? The beginning of the process is to go to craigconnects start or flash, connect and enter your information in there. But frankly, we’re still working on a system to work on this because we’ve gotten farm or requests that than originally anticipated. I thought maybe ten it’s been hundred, and i think the part of the answer well involved from crowdsourcing, but we wanted something that actually work, and we haven’t okay now here on tony martignetti non-profit radio, we have jargon jail, and i don’t want you to be sentenced to jargon jail. Just please explain what crowdsourcing is, okay, and then then you’ll be out of jargon. Yeah, the idea that you could get lots of people to get involved our mind with something to produce a better result that may be a few experts working together would get. The idea is that you put something online and you used some of these discussion tools that vote up the better idea and vote down the less attractive. It only works if you get hundreds or thousands of people involved, but this is what we call democracy. Yes, online democracy, thank you, reprieved from jargon jail. So of course, and so you’re envisioning, maybe some kind of crowdsourcing feature on craigconnects right now, we’re talking about that, because the deal ultimately is that the only way to do the right thing for folks is, too. Hey, what is the right way? That’s, the history of craigslist? Yeah, what, what the right thing to do is you get feedback, then you act on it, and then you ask again. Greg, we have to leave it there. I’m joined now by kathleen rittereiser kathleen is co author of foundation and endowment investing, and we’re going to be talking about managing your endowment. Teo, get the most from it and keep it most safes. Kathleen, i want to welcome you to the studio. Thanks, it’s. Great to be here. What did you do to research this book? Foundation and endowment investing. How did you go about finding out what big non-profit organizations are doing with their endowments? Well, the first thing that i did was i teamed with the co author larry coe shard, who is the chief investment officer of georgetown university. And if the book came about because it was larry’s idea when he took over as the chief investment officer at georgetown, he was looking to learn from other successful chief investment officers about how best to manage an endowment in a more complex acid and buy-in asset allocation environment. So he had the idea because there was no such book came to me because i was calling on foundations and endowments as an asset management sales person, so the two of us teamed up, and what we did was we researched who are some of the most successful institutions and investors in the foundation and endowment community. And then what we did was approached them and asked them to be in the book. So the book is actually profiles of leading chief investment officers. Each you tell their story, share their strategies and give advice for how to manage large endowment portfolios. We also include some history and some basic ideas about how to go about managing endowment portfolio. In other words, like, what are the things the basic things to dio if you are the chief investment officer or overseeing an endowment foundation, my portfolio and when i first brought kathleen on, i was stumbling through some papers to find the bio that i wanted to have in front of me when she came on. So i’m going to share that with you. Now the full title of her book, co authored with larry coe shard, is foundation and endowment, investing philosophies and strategies of top investors and institutions and the two of them also have a second book, more current top hedge fund investors, stories, strategies and advice. Both books are available at amazon dot com. I also want to share with you that kathleen is a director of investor relations with concordia advisors and that’s in new york city based hedge fund. She has over twenty years experience in sales, marketing and relationship management roles with leading asset management, research and brokerage firms, which she was just saying, and i apologize that i didn’t have the paper in front of me, but i wanted to move us along rather than be stumbling along. What types of organizations did the people who you and your co author interviewed work for the majority, it was basically split half endowments is a large university endowments and also some large foundation. So thie institutions included the hewlett foundation notre dame investor, which was is led by a woman named alice handy, who used to run the university of virginia endowment. Mitt is representative george washington university, the kaiser foundation and morgan creek capital management. And the idea was to really kind of showcase well known, well regarded chief investment officers in who worked in a variety of different types of non-profit institutions we also showcase. I mentioned mark yusko from morgan creek capital management. We also showcase the kind of burgeoning trend in foundation and endowment management, which is outsourced ceo. So that’s, what investor is and so it’s morgan creek capital management, and in a few minutes we’re going to talk about the outsource seo chief investment officer, a trend that you see but let’s start with some of the lessons that small and midsize non-profits can take away from what you learned from these very big endowment managers. Absolutely. I think the most important lesson from all of these foundations and endowments and it’s true about any endowment portfolio, is that the long term perpetual time horizon allows thie investment manager or the person overseeing the portfolio to take a long term investment perspective and to have a more value orientation, meaning that they can often make investment decisions relatively early on by things at very cheap prices and hold them for a long period of time. So it’s actually it’s actually an approach that’s kind of a longer term buy-in hold approach. The other thing that’s important is the quality of the governance and the fiduciary oversight of the portfolios that most all of the institutions that we spoke, teo, there is a chief investment officer who has full responsibility for the portfolio in making decisions, and the boards and the governors are really just for oversight and getting involved in asset allocation. So and the other lesson, which is really kind of a trend that started many years ago in the foundation and endowment community and it’s. Still continuing with these long term portfolios is the idea that if you can take a long term approach, you can invest in less liquid types of securities, which led teo, many of them being successful by making investments in alternative investment portfolios such as venture capital, private equity and hedge funds. Now our audience is small and midsize non-profits so some of this i want them to be ableto benefit from, and i know in terms of quality of the oversight and transparency that that’s where i think we’ll get into the sort of outsourced ceo movement because i think the majority of our audience probably doesn’t even have a chief investment officer. They probably do have a financial officer, but not an investment officer, right. This lets a little more about this. The long term view. Um, i hear that all the time in, in terms of personal investing, your time horizon. What is there a recommended time horizon for investing endowment? Well, i think you know, one of the well known endowment ceos who’s written about this subject is david swenson from yell so he he looks at it as forever so that’s, you know, officially perpetual is forever. Realistically, most endowments, i think, need to look more like ten to fifteen years out rather than one to two. Now many foundations in particular, i know, have different types of liquidity constraints because for the most part, they need thio spend five percent of the endowments value every year, so they have different kind of liquidity considerations. But if this is a large pool of capital, even a good size pool of capital, it makes sense to be able to put some assets in your allocation, which have a longer term horizon for paying off. So that’s kind of where something like a long term real estate investment or venture capital or a hedge fund that might have be investing in distressed assets or something that has a longer term time horizon for when the payoff will happen, will allow the endowment, the foundation to be able to hold on to the principal and preserve that principle for the life of their organization, but then also get the income that they need thio manage operations or give grants during during the shorter time periods. What this does lead into is the idea, which i think was one of the key investment ideas or the investment thoughts that come out of talking to foundation and damn achieve investment officers and is also supported by research in the industry is the idea that asset allocation is really important. So whether you have a five million dollar endowment or you have a five hundred million dollar endowment, how you decide to allocate your assets is very important in how it relates to the mission of your organization and what your organ it organisations needs are. But asset allocation remains the key way tio earn returns overtime. My guest is kathleen rittereiser, co author of foundation and endowment investing, and we’re talking about everlasting endowment keeping your endowment lasting for forever for your organization’s life. But, kathleen, what can non-profits with maybe a five or six figure endowment do in terms of long term investing? I think i think an organization like that a lot of it depends on the tradition, the governance, as i mentioned earlier, do they have a committee that is involved? If not, i mean, i think this does lead into the question of outsourcing and one of the trends that we identified and we spoke to some of the people that run outsource ceo organisations, is this idea of really just taking the portfolio and turning it over to an outside manager full time? Because what they do is they pull assets with a lot of other foundations and endowments. So you get a an economies of scale that is that’s really related more toward being able to pull your assets with other organisations, to make the outsource cia a more substantial investor in alternative portfolios, and allows you to get the benefit of really professional asset management experience, especially with that specialty and foundations and endowments and i think that’s the that’s probably the key thought is that there is there’s a lot of expertise and these portfolios are very complicated metoo manage as it relates to an alternative, so that would be why i would suggest that if you are a smaller size, the best way to approach it is to work with some kind of outsourced ceo organization, and they’ll take funds that air just in the five or low six figures a seventy five thousand dollar endowment, it depends, probably a seventy five thousand dollars and damn, it would be would be would be difficult. However, i believe that there’s more and more new types of products coming onto the market. So there’s a lot of different models in investor, which i mentioned earlier, is kind of is a custom model. Morgan creek has a fun that’s available through the merrill lynch platform, and there are a number of other types of organizations that are offering more like a fund-raising khun just invest in a fund rather than hyre and outsource ceo so there’s there’s a lot of different models that are coming to the forefront and a lot of larger asset management organizations. Tia cref recently entered this market, so i think that that will be an option that’s going to be available for even the smallest size endowments, and it certainly sounds like it is now available if an organization has maybe seven hundred fifty thousand dollars or a million and a half dollars, and even in those low six figures, definitely right? Absolutely yes, absolutely. And they’re not going to wantto put, i would think the whole endowment with outsourced chief investment officer, would they? Actually, they will. I mean, some of the largest one of the largest outsourced situations is a company called perella weinberg, and they recently took in the entire university of colorado endowment, which is eight hundred million dollars. What they did then was they teamed up. They took the ceo as well. So the university of colorado chief investment officer went over and rant it’s now running the perella weinberg portfolio. But that’s that’s, probably the biggest move that’s been made so and they will, an organization that doesn’t have the resource is or the time or the expertise to be running the endowment themselves or and they usually have a smaller endowment will actually make the decision to outsource the whole portfolio. They’ll have oversight and governance and be able to be making asset allocation decisions and decisions related to how the endowment is used for their mission, but they will actually hire someone to run the whole portfolio for them. We only have about thirty seconds before the break. What about the resistance that on this is ego that the board is now giving up authority? I’m not sure that i have thirty seconds. I think that’s a thirty minute answer it’s definitely an issue. And one that one that i would say that my my motto now is there is no d i y in fiduciary and that fiduciaries need to start to learn. I think a little bit more how the world of investments is changing and to start to think about what is really the right fiduciary decision to make and it’s not my ego, but it’s, what is right for this institution, we’re going to take a break. What about the due diligence? What should’ve non-profit be looking at when there and what should the process be for hiring the right outsource ceo? Well, it’s, interesting, because i think a lot of smaller foundations and endowments get in, as we were talking about earlier, that the investment committee gets excited about picking managers, and often we’ve seen that they don’t have the right experience to be picking individual manager. So picking an equity manager or bond manager where and the process is actually quite similar except what you’re doing is making a decision that’s more of a one time, longer lasting decision. So there is some extra pressure in that case. However, i mean it’s pretty much doing the kind of research like coming tio my website or even, you know, sending meet so, you know, doing research on the internet, there is a block called and dominant bester that writes about endowment issues. I write about these issues, and i’ve spoken about them, so it is working it’s kind of doing some initial legwork. Teo, look at the models on dh think about what’s the size of my endowment. What what are we comfortable with in terms of giving up the level of authority? Some organizations have made the decision that they’re willing to turn over the whole portfolio, others might go somewhat piecemeal into it. Organizations that are working with consultants as such as cambridge may decide to work with their consultant organization to get referrals or also to transition into a more outsourced type of model. So, you know, obviously the first part is research and and i’ll admit that because this is kind of a newer type of investment approach, there are fewer let’s, say, syndicated sources of information about this but it’s becoming more and more prevalent. So even a google search on outsource cia well, i think lead you to some good resource is and again there’s information available on my website and even contacting me directly, i’m happy to help people with this also, i would say that the next phase is really due diligence like you would do with the manager thinking about what your organization’s needs are what who were the people that you want to be working with, what’s their business model inter? Are they a single fund? Are they doing something custom and then and then spending time with these investors? Tto learn about their process and how they’re going to work with you so i think it’s ah, it’s a can be a longer term process, you know, it’s not a decision that you should make over the course of a quarter. I would say that if you’re really seriously taking turning over your whole endowment to an organization that it probably should take at least six months to a year from start to finish, to be making that kind of going through the process and making that kind of decision, what about the oversight we have just about a minute left, once once a now outsource ceo is hired, where’s what’s the board’s responsibility, and they still are fiduciaries to the organization what’s the oversight of the outsource the board is still is still different. You, sherry, and basically the same kind of the oversight is the same oversight that they would be responsible for if they had a ceo or if they had a number of managers that were reporting to a committee member. I think what happens is what and what i’ve heard from organizations that have made the transition so far, the oversight is actually much more productive in hyre level variation of oversight in other words, they’re involved in strategic issues of the institution and ask that allocation issues rather than nitty gritty, so it’s basically that the oversight is brought up a level in terms of it’s strategic import for the foundation or endowment. Hildy is the author of the polyana principles reinventing non-profit organizations to create the future of our world, published by renaissance press in tucson, arizona, he’ll be helped develop the current master’s degree program in community leadership at do cane university, where she has taught she was awarded a points of light citation from president bill clinton, and she hosts the monthly podcast making change for the chronicle of philanthropy. She’s, the co founder of creating the future, a nonprofit organization in tucson organized around the polyana principles. Our other books include friendraising community engagement strategies, fir boards who hate fund-raising but love making friends, community engagement, step by step action kit and bored recruitment and orientation. A step by step common sense guide i’m very pleased that hill, these most recent book, the polyana principles, brings her to today’s show hildy. Welcome, tony. Thank you. It is a pleasure to be here. Oh, it’s, my pleasure to have you. Thank you. I’m going to start by reading a little quote. That is in your book you say that we are creating the future, right? Now, with every decision we make with every word we speak with every action we take, what is the potential for our future under the polyana principles? The potential of our future with or without the polyana principles is amazing the potential of our future because we are creating the future with everything we do with every you know, if i say something nasty to my kids in the morning, i’m creating my future and her future and probably her teachers future and all of that. If we have a wonderful morning, we’re creating the future in that way. And so the future is ours to create. And that just means anything really is possible. Unless it’s physically impossible, anything is possible. Yes. Only the laws of physics constrain us pretty much excellent. Look, pretty much well. And, you know, we thought the laws of physics constrained us and wouldn’t let us get to the moon. And we proved that wrong. So you never know, right? Just on a system level, of course we’re going to dive into the detail, but on a broad level, what are the polyana principles? Boy? Oh, boy, let me out! Let me move that. Question teo, too a little bit of a different context because my listing out the principles people are going no, no, no, yeah, we’re going to talk about each one in detail. Now i don’t mean for you to list one, two, three, four, five, six. But just as a general. Like what? What? What? What sort of a system is it? God. Okay, well, what it really is is it looks at the question what will it take for every organization in this sector to reach his potential? Because that potential is it’s amazing communities. It is the community’s we all want to live in healthy, vibrant, amazing places toe live. It really is humanity’s potential. And so the pollen of principles comes from analysis of looking at with all of the work that organizations were doing globally. We have millions of organizations with millions of people working in in this sector globally. Why is everybody so frustrated that change is not happening and certainly it’s happening incrementally. But why has everyone in this sector so universally frustrated that we’re not creating the results? We innate li sense that we can create. And when we looked at what was going on in the sector and we looked at it from a very practical standpoint because we were we were consultants who came out of a former life as business, turn around people. So from a very practical perspective, saying, you know, we changed our lives to change the world, how come things aren’t changing this fast? And what we found was really two things going on, the first reason that organizations don’t create the communities that they know in nate leave that they had the potential to create is because we don’t aim at that we aim at fixing problems, which are very, very, really need to be fixed, but we’re sort of aiming reactively rather than aiming at what would it take to build healthy, vibrant, humane communities? And we’re going to have opportunities to talk about that as we talked about the principles, what goes into that? Okay, and then another, please continue. Yeah, so that’s that’s really, what the principals are about is how do we create a system that do it name at the change that we want to see in communities and do aimed at our potential. So that’s that’s the quick answer to your question of what are the systems that that undergird that the pollen of principles air really named thank you and the organizations that we’re talking about working through on would you have just about a minute and a half or so before break before we get into the details of the different principles? But those organizations were talking about working through are commonly called non-profit organizations, and you have that in your subtitle, but you prefer community benefit organization. Why is that? Well, because non-profit talks about what we’re not, you know, when i when i meet you, i don’t immediately look at all the things you’re not. I look at all the things you are, tony, nice to see you, you’re not very tall, exactly exactly. And so when we call ourselves by what we’re not, we’re comparing ourselves to something and not measuring up and when we call ourselves community benefit organizations that’s exactly what we are and it’s exactly what we’re about excellent love the phrase, and we’re going to talk about the potential for community benefit organizations making change within themselves within their communities and within the world. Well, we were going toe to step through the principles because obviously, i think that’s important for people to understand what the what the system is and what it’s elements are, but then, you know, we’ll have time to talk about implementation and hopefully even some of your work dahna in at creating the future, so let’s, start with the first principal is about accountability. What is what is that principle? And what are we accountable for? The first of the principles is that we accomplished what we hold yourself accountable for, and and one of the one of the things that we have found in terms of, um, of accountability, when we think of accountability in a classic organization were really everybody knows accountability rests with the board, right? Always, yes, right, and and and we’ve got that drill down boards understand they’re accountable. They’re not entirely sure who they’re accountable to or what they’re accountable for, but they know they’re accountable, so what we teach them is that they are accountable for ah fiscal oversight for legal oversight. For operational oversight, which is all of this stuff that’s going on inside the organization, what we don’t keep them. And when i say we i mean, just about every governance that’s out there, you mean the commune, the community benefit organization, community, you don’t mean you’re consulting? No, no, no, you’re consulting different? Yeah, yeah, what, what? What we do as a sector? What if you were take a governance class at any of the governance institutions around the world? If you were to take a governance class at a university, if you were to take a governance class at a non-profit resource center or if you were learned governance from ninety nine point nine percent of all consultants, you would learn that governance is accountability and talk about fiscal accountability on dh legal oversight and operational oversight, and then you would look at what we sort of tend to call boardman can ix the stuff of being aboard, so you’re accountable for your own orientation and you’re accountable for recruitment and you’re accountable for policies what we found as we started to look at the question of what’s holding this sector back is that no one is talking. About how we be accountable as boards for creating significant improvement in our communities. Nobody talks about that accountability. No one teaches us how to be accountable for that and that’s leadership. That’s, really, what the heart of leadership is is holding ourselves accountable for creating for making the difference. We got onto the board in the first place to make. And so what we found as we started to really rip things apart and take a look at them is that we are taught to hold ourselves accountable for the means for the internal operations for legal. And you know, you look at the reports that boards get at the table. They talk about finance, they talk about human resource is those are all the means to accomplish the ends. But no one teaches boards howto hold themselves accountable for the end results. And so when we looked at what would a governance system look like if it were helping boards hold themselves accountable for creating the change they want to see in community? Because that’s where they got on the board in the first place, that would be a governance system that shows boards howto hold themselves accountable. For end results in the community not just tells them they’re accountable, but shows them how to do that and then shows them howto hold themselves accountable for the means within that s so what we’ve done as a sector is taken the means out of context focused everybody on the means. So what do we have? We have we have strong organizations focused on kapow city, building an organizational effectiveness internally without any focus externally and certainly not bored accountability focus externally guiding the organization towards creating the change we want community in our community, right? I wish we could spend more time on each of the principles, but we just don’t have that luxury. So of course i commend to your attention the polyana principles by hildy gottlieb second is that basically, each of us is creating the future. What do you want to say about that? Well, if we will bring that back again at the organizational level, organisations create the future by planning and we’re taught that strategic planning is you know, it’s it’s, our organizations that are best we plan so that we can we can be the best we can be. And yet when we looked at planning planning doesn’t ask the only question that matters, which is how is our community going to be an amazing place to live because of the work that we’re doing? What planning does instead is it looks out just a couple of years into the future and says, well, what do we think we can accomplish? Or there’s a problem we need to solve, but we could never solve the whole problem, so will will add ten percent more staff on the south side now what we wind up doing if we really look at what that means in terms of planning is our planning is reactive to what’s going on in the community, and it is incremental because we know we can’t solve the whole thing, and so when we look at holding ourselves accountable for creating the future of our communities, we create a planning process that ames first at the fuel teacher we want to create and then created a critical path towards that future, not just saying well, here’s our vision for what one hundred percent success would look like a food bank living in an equitable community where everyone has their their basic needs met. But now let’s get back to well. We have to react to what’s in front of us no it’s saying here’s what the future would look like and here’s the critical path that it’s going to take us to get there. What do you say to people who would react that this is lovely and utopian and naive thinking it works? Wei have been not only doing this work ourselves when we were doing consulting, but having stepped away from consulting to build creating the future, creating the future’s entire mission is to make the practical means that we have discovered which is mostly what the polyana principles is about. The book is three quarters of it is case studies showing that this is a practical, if nothing else, but we not only have have done it ourselves as consultants, but creating the future is all about teaching others to do this work and watching the consultants that we have trained in this and the incredible results they’re seeing in communities, you know, the only answer is it works, and then it happens faster then anybody can believe happens because we take the blinders off and we aim at it, hell, he’s been referring to creating the future, which i do hope we have a chance to talk about a lot more detail toward the end, but you’ll find that falik her, the organization that she co founded at creating the future dot org’s. Hildy, you’re the third principal, i’m going to read everyone and everything is interconnected and independent interdependent whether we acknowledge that or not. So we need to tear down some walls we have, we have the wonderful opportunity to tear down well, the thing that’s been interesting as we again looked at what goes on in this sector is if you left organizations to their own devices without any external stimuli, and i most by that i mean funding sources, they want to work together because they know innate lee that the only way we can accomplish something is if we all work together, but we’ve created funding systems that force organizations to compete with each other, and we can’t simultaneously build trust and compete with each other. And so when we have worked with thunders to look differently at funding there’s, some examples in the book where funders actually have found that it’s a misnomer to think that we can’t fund everyone we can indeed fundez everyone, even with the limited resources that we have when we look differently at the way we’re doing our work, and when we aim at taking advantage and building on what interconnectedness can do for bringing together organizations to ask, what can we accomplish together that we can’t accomplish on our own? Have you worked with public sector funders, government funders or you’re referring just to what hyre private funders, the flexibility that private funders have lead them to be more likely candidates? And so we have worked primarily with private funders, you know, as everyone knows, government is is certainly not the dog it’s the tail, and hopefully the dog could wag the tail rather than the other way. The the next principal is values based, and i’m going to read again from from hilda’s book when it comes to changing values. It is not just the mission that matters. It is the degree to which every part of our work can act as an example of what those values would look like in practice. Would you share with us the story of the disability? Care group on dh how that relates, tio polyana, principle number four you know, i i just had an example come up the other day, and if i can, so is it a better one than disability care group it’s one that way see these kinds of things all the time we see a domestic violence organization and, you know, i need to preface this with i couldn’t make this stuff up, so i have i need to start by saying i truly couldn’t make this stuff up a domestic violence organization whose board was so abusive to the staff that the staff unionized way i see i’ve i’ve worked with the leadership organization where the board was, so be rest of leadership. I mean, these are guys that teach leadership in the community that they needed someone to come in and help them, but basically they should have gone through their own programs, but the one that that just walked in heart our doors this week was a a community visioning group called on the phone, and when we round up talking to them at at length, we found that the problem they had was that this community visioning group did not have a vision for its own organization and how that organization fit into the community. The vision group was myopic. So? So, you know, it’s consistent you look at, you know, a domestic violence organization that that is being abusive to its staff. You look at the example that you quoted in the book, a disability organization that was not paying it people enough to provide the care they made it to provided an attentive level, they were paying minimum wage to folks that we’re going to go out and take care of the very basic needs of people who were in need. You go on and on, and you watch the disconnect. What we’ve found work no is if we ask the question, what behaviors if we’re to aim at the community we want, if we were to aim at a humane, vibrant, compassionate community, whatever our mission happens to b, what behaviors and values would we want to see in others in our community to reach towards that? So whether it is humanity towards folks with disabilities, whether it is a community that is respectful to others in terms of domestic violence, what behavior do? We want to see in others. And how will we model that to the community in the way we do our work? And how will we make our decisions in a way that adheres to the behaviors in the values we want to see in others that’s really being the change we want to see and being yes, and committed to what we say we believe in, right? Your next principle is that strength builds upon our strengths, not our weaknesses. And you say that you want to eliminate the assumption that scarcity is reality, why’s that because reality is what we look at. If we see scarcity, that will be our reality. And if we see sufficiency, that will be our reality. When we look at individuals who walked through our doors in many organizations, we can see them as weak in need of service, or we can see them as having a pile of strengths upon which to build my business partner. Dmitri likes to quote that we can see stephen hawking as a debilitated human being who can barely take care of himself. He could barely breathe on his own, or we can see him as the most brilliant physicist we’ve ever known and it’s all on how we look at things. So when we when we see the individuals who walk in our doors and not only ask them the list of what’s wrong, but ask them what they have to build on, we know that that strength builds on strength. Well, the other thing that we forget is that the same works for our organization. So we will watch an organization that may very well be building on the strength of the folks in their community. Some do some don’t even those who are building on the strength of their community. When we asked them, do you see your own organization as strong or weak? Oh, no, we don’t have enough money and we don’t have enough volunteers on, you know, we’re definitely not strong, and even the term capacity building makes the assumption that we need to build capacity. It doesn’t say we’re building upon our own capacities. It assumes that we need to bring in expertise and build capacity when in fact organizations have tremendous strengths and resources to build upon. Okay, yeah, assumes a vacuum we’re starting with with a void we’re gonna take a break with hildy gottlieb she’s, the author of the polyana principles. Interested simply email at info at talking alternative dot com dafs welcome back to the show, it’s, time for tony’s take two at roughly thirty two minutes into the hour this week based on ah block post that i did, the name of the post is planned, giving is a jealous mistress, and what i’m trying to bring out in that post is that when you pair planned giving fund-raising with any other fund-raising responsibility, the plan giving program in your non-profit or community benefit organization is going to suffer and that’s because of a few things and obviously lay them out on the block. One of them is that whatever you pair it with is going to have much shorter deadlines than planned e-giving i’ve seen director, i’ve seen the title director of annual giving and planned e-giving and say, you know, in the fourth quarter of the year, annual giving that annual fund those mailings and and checks coming in, those can sometimes have weekly production goals, andi even through the year, there are at least usually monthly production goals for for that type of fund-raising and planned giving is such a longer term transactional relationship building between the prospect or donor, and the and the professional fundraiser or the or the executive director who’s doing the fund-raising but it’s just not practical for planned giving to get the time or attention that it needs. And what that leads to then is sort of management deceiving itself, thinking that planned e-giving fund-raising is is covered. You hear that? A lot we could we have that covered it’s covered, really only nominally it’s in someone’s job title, but it’s not getting really time devoted to it. And there are other reasons that pairing plan giving is difficult to makes it difficult to achieve your playing giving goals and that’s all in my post planned giving is a jealous mistress and my blog’s that m p g a d v dot com, and that is tony’s take two for friday, april twenty second. I’m with hildy gottlieb, the author of the polyana principles we’re talking about innovation and transformative thinking and how every community benefit organization can can take this on and build themselves their community and the world well beyond what traditional thinking would would lead them to believe i said that. Okay, hildy, my capturing alt-right you’re doing great. Okay? All right. Um, so we ended with not building. On weakness, but our strength building on our strengths. But just what about fund-raising? I mean, you mentioned it, a cz, a typical, you know, mindset of scarcity, but but don’t. Community benefit organizations have to continually fund-raising mean, don’t. They have scarce dollars in their bank often. It depends on how you look at resource is depends on how you look at what we need. And again, it comes back to the heart of the polyana principles. What if i could just take a moment and share where they came from? I didn’t wake up one morning and come up with six principles. We spent approximately five, seven years really trying to change our work as consultants to be more effective. I wish i could say that we went out and we did a lot of research to find out. How do how do communities transform? But to be perfectly honest, when we look, there wasn’t a lot out there. And what? So what we did as you know, our background within business. Turn around. We went out and we just said, ok, if one thing’s not working, you try something else. And by experimentation, we found systems that when we put them into place, put organizational effectiveness, and especially their affecting community, it put it on steroids. I mean, it happened faster and more dramatically and more gracefully than anybody imagined it could happen. And what we found was that when you change how you see things things change, and so when we look back to say, okay, what? What are the seams undergirding what we found work? Because we found a lot of things that didn’t work quite honestly and stop doing them and then kept going in the direction of what works. What we found were these six principles are always all of them at play when we say dramatic change happening when we see some change happening, some of these principles art play, but not all of them, and in many organizations, none of these principles are at play, and so a big piece of the answer to your fund-raising question is it depends on what we’re looking at if we’re focused on scarce resource is as money than that reality will constantly reinforce itself when instead we ask, what are all the functions this programme needs to do? And who else in the community is doing any piece of those functions? How can we work together? So it builds that interconnectedness? It builds those strengths together, we think about our programs differently. We think about our resource is differently. We find a we need less money and b we have created in exgagement at a level that build more strength upon it’s, almost like, you know, interest that compound. When we, when we build on what we have, and, quite honestly, that’s the model of how wealthy people make their money, they don’t go out and constantly work for letting bill gates does not work for a living. He makes his money off of what he has. Well, organizations have so much to build on, and we just look right past all of that, and they know what we need. We’re going to spend time talking about your ideas for asset based resource development and also community engagement. Let’s, just look att principle. Number six. I’m just going to ask you to explain what it means that individuals will go where systems lead them. We all are reinforced with this thought that we have free will and we do have free will, but we all also know how difficult it is to buck the system, and we have got systemic issues within the way organizations do their work. Is that reinforced and make it almost impossible for an individual to buck that? So if, for example, a development director comes into a organization and says, you know what, i’ve got this this asset based way i read hildy gottlieb spoken, and i’ve taken some of her classes, and i got this asset based way. It is very likely that that one individual in an organization is going to face resistance at every turn, so it makes it difficult to buck that, and it happens with weight, with boards all the time where a boardmember will come on, and they immediately defer to the system that’s in place with that board, even if it doesn’t feel right, even if they’ve been on boards where it has worked better but that’s just yeah, that’s just it’s. Comfortable, it’s. Easier to go with the system that’s in place than to try to change it a human nature. Right, and what’s your advice for that boardmember we change the system? What what we have, and it is really the reason that creating the future has formed what, what creating the future is sort of, you know, one part organization, one part living laboratory, one part movement on dh what we’re really seeing is, is that a new kill? Zsystems that came at our potential are the norm in this sector that we’re going to be banging our heads against the wall every every individual organization is going to be banging their head against the wall, saying, i tried to get my board to go along with this, but they said, now we want to go the way it goes, and so what we’re looking at it creating the future is making this kind of work this strength based, interconnected, based work that ames us at our potential to create the future that that become the norm in this sector rather than the exception. And again, i hope we have time to talk more about creating the future. So let’s, spend little time with the your ideas of asset based resource development we touched on them we’re a few. Minutes ago, but i want to dive into little detail. What are the assets that you typically find? Community benefit organizations have but are ignoring. There is really four basic kinds of assets that every organization has in some part on dh. Those are physical assets, resources, which is the stuff they have. It could be desk. It could be a copy machine. It could be a parking lot their mission, assets and resources which are the things they do. They’re human assets and resources, which is everybody they know and their community assets and resources, which is the physical mission and human resources of everybody else in their community. Ok, on with those resource is what? What are we looking to do? If instead, if we were to break down normal resource development planning to it it’s to a bare minimum essence, we’d have three steps we would have. No, what our budget needs are identify what’s already coming in what we can count on and then step three filling the hole. And what we have found is if we look at our budget needs and then looking step to know what’s coming in and then identify what do? We have to build on, then look at filling the whole what we find is that we have a ton to build on that makes us stop reaching for what we call the if only if only we could get a big grant if only someone would come sprinkle fairy dust on our organization and we’d have lots of money. What you also called the culture of cans? Yeah, yeah, the culture of can’t really is is getting back to when when you suggested earlier is that people would suggest that our ability to create the future is sort of some sort of age of aquarius sort of i think the culture of can’t really talk to our assumption that we can’t create the world we want. And yet we say it happened all the time we see way i see the things that we think are impossible happen all the time, but we culturally believe that it can happen, and we can help them to happen by looking at the four types of different assets that you explain on dh their value, can you can you give an example of the the program resource is and how that can help with financial sustainability i think what i what i’ll do is share one of the stories that in the book, which really sort of combined several of these way, we’re working with an environmental group in mexico, and they had a mexican based a peso based budget of what would be the equivalent of two hundred thousand dollars american annually. And they were a research station where students from the u s would fly in this little fishing village. Beautiful, beautiful place students from the u s would fly in. They would land land on this little airstrip. They would be bused over to the research facility. They would do their work. They would get back on the bus. They would go back out and fly back home. And so that was pretty much the it was primarily research, but people coming in students coming in from the u s and and leaving out and they were looking at developing mohr more funds. So we went down the list of everything that they had. We went through and ask them, tell us about your program. And they told us what i just told you that the students come in. And they come through on and they leave, and they stay for several days, we said, well, what do they do at night? What do they do so well, you know, they pretty much sit around on the beach and they play music and mean sounded absolutely wonderful. I wanted to go home and we said, well, tell us more of the mission, what else happens? Well, the other big pieces of the education that we do is tour buses come through here, and they’re looking at the fishing village and they’re really on their way to the next big town, but they take this as a detour, and they come through the community and they look at what’s going on in the community and the fishing villages, and they look at the boats, and then they come over to our facility and we tell them about the environment, they get back on the bus and they leave, okay? So now we understand a little bit about their mission and how it worked until the i’m gonna i’m gonna stop you. They’re just going to take a break. You laid the groundwork for that and when we return after the grayce then i’ll ask you to explain what the, how you looked at, what they have and how they could look at it very differently. Hyre welcome back before the break, hildy was laying the groundwork for on interesting story that’s related in her book the polyana principles about a research center and identifying what the assets are that they have and how they could look at them very differently to help the organization with its financial sustainability. Hildy, please continue the story about the research center. Absolutely well, we talked about what what their mission was that we looked at it looked at all of the pieces of their mission, we then looked at their physical assets, they showed us all around the plant, they showed us all the dorms, they showed us the research facility, and then we got to the gift shop and they said, oh, don’t talk to us about the gift shop a boardmember thought it was a good idea to sell t shirts and sell hats, but the tourists that come through, they want the authentic stuff that they can get in town. They don’t want our stuff and the kids, they can’t afford a thirty five dollars t shirt, so don’t even talk to us about the gift shop. Well, when we thought, kayman we’ve got all of these. Different facilities now we we looked at all their physical resource, is we’ve looked at their mission resource is and one of the things that we know about kids is they may not have money for a t shirt, but if anybody’s ever had teenagers, still they’ll kill themselves for food. Any of any kid will come up with money for food. And so what we suggested to them is building on what you have. You’ve got a gift shop. What if, instead of selling expensive t shirts, you sold bottled water to the tourists who sold in in those days? It was ten years ago. Disposable cameras? What if you sold snacks for the kids and here’s what they found out, they found out that a they could do that when it didn’t require having all of the work of a gala or a golf tournament or anything they could do this while they were at the warehouse store once a month getting supplies, they could just buy extra stuff, but here’s where the punchline comes in, they had when we asked them again their missions. How many people come through here? They had ten thousand people a year. Come through the organization. A tour bus alone has one hundred forty four people on it. And they were getting five. Six of those a day during season. You multiply that out. Well, ok, here’s, let’s. Just do the math in that economy again. It was a peso based economy, so their budget was only two hundred thousand dollars a year if they had ten thousand people come through and each of them just bought two, two, three dollars worth of stuff that would be ten percent of their budget. So again, it required no extra work on their part. It required just just picking up snacks and things when they were already buying supplies in town. And and yet it didn’t come from a scarcity place. It came from a place of well, we have all this to build on. We can take advantage of what we already have. Strength builds upon our strengths, not our weaknesses. Let’s, talk a little about community engagement in terms of around, you know, implementation of the principles. Would you share the story of the cancer support group and how they got doctors engaged? Absolutely. The cancer support group was an organization that did non-technical support for folks who have cancer? What they found is, as we all would know, that when we, when we have a debilitating disease like cancer, we almost start to be seen as our cancer, rather than as a human being that has this illness. And so people look at us and treats the illness and talk about the illness, but it’s really all the other things that make us thrive. And so this was an organization that not only did counseling, but they would do things like gardening and ballroom dancing, and really speaks to the soul of the person, which is the thing that would help them heal. All of their programs were free, and yet they could not get doctors to refer their pace. And so when they came to us, they said, you know, we have this great outreach program which is thie community benefit codeword for marketing. We go out, we tell you our story and we hope that you’ll come back and do what we want you to dio and they would go tell the doctors here’s our story and will you refer your patients and it’s not working? So what we worked with them in community engagement is how can you engage the doctors in conversation so that they see that you’re all on the same team and you’re engaged together in building this? And so they went on a programme of hundred station and asking questions of the doctor’s, asking them things like, if you were going to refer your patients, what would you want to know? What might stop you from referring your patient? And they engaged the doctor’s wisdom in building this together? The result within a very, very short period of time just months was not only that they had all the referrals i could ever, ever live with, but the doctors came to them and we’re so excited about the program and said, can we form an advisory council? Because we’d love to work more closely with you guys on a regular basis? It’s what we find is when we engage, we have this thing, you know, we’re told in this sector that we raised friends so that we can raise money if instead we look a friendship, the way we look, a friendship in our real lives, that this is a two way relationship because we both care about the same things, then we’re engaging in a very different level, and people will give up their wisdom, their ideas, their experience and yeah, oh, by the way, they’ll give you money. But it’s not what you’re asking for it. If i met you at a party and the first thing i did was get to know you peripherally enough so i could ask you for money. You find the restroom as fast as she could on. I love that story because the doctor’s engaged way beyond what the organization was asking. They were asking the doctors opinions and the doctors wanted to create the advisory board and spend even more time helping. But, you know, everyone and everything is interconnected and interdependent, and we acknowledge that or not. Exactly, and we find that it happens consistently. I mean, the wonderful thing about doing work this way and again it becomes a system is when the systems are aligned behind the change. We want to create our line behind our interconnectedness and our core values. Change happens faster, more dramatically and more gracefully than we could ever imagine. And there’s an abundance of wonderful stuff like what happened with the doctors that comes from that? We have just about a minute left. Hildy, why don’t you explain creating the future? You talked a little about it being strength based on dh talking, focusing on interconnectedness. Share more about us with what we’ll find at creating the future, creating the future. We are looking seriously to make the norm in social change work dramatic social change rather than the exception, and have programs for executive directors for boards. We have programs for consultants to really just move the needle on what this sector’s the sectors potential doesn’t change. It moved the needle on our ability as sector two to reach that potential. Good morning. Thanks for having me, it’s my pleasure to have you welcome. Dave is the ceo and chief consultant of granite partners, which you’ll find out granite hyphen, part p a r t dot com he has been creating successful marketing programs for clients, mostly in the washington d c metro area for over twenty five years, and i’m very glad that his work and his expertise in email marketing specifically bring him to the show. Welcome again, dave, thank you, david. What does somebody do if they don’t have an email list to get started with him as well? Talk about building the list before we talk about what to do with it. Uh, there are a number of approaches that depends on what situation you’re in. If you’re looking for consumers, there are off a lot of ways to build a consumer list. Um, one of the more prominent and more recently evolved is the social media. You can use social media to evolve yourself into an e mail list based on friendster, facebook twitter followers linked in connections those kind of things can all be gathered and uses a colonel for a personal sort of networking list that you can use to promote whatever business you’re in. Okay, we’re non-profits fundraisers, it’s a little more complicated. Okay, well, that’s let’s deal with complicated cause. Our audience is small and midsize non-profit so that’s that’s where we want to be how should they go about it if they have a list of people who have been supporting them? Maybe just for a couple of years, maybe for many years, but they don’t have email lists. Uh, probably the first thing to do is make sure you have permission to communicate with their members are builders. They say something. Do you have a least an address for them? Send him a postcard asked him to send you back their email address. In response, you’ll give them some sort of data special report or a copy of research or something the value to them in response in return for them giving up their email. Okay, so use their their physical address to get their email address or okay on your website if the organization has a website. And you simply ask visitor’s log in before they can access certain pieces of it or certain information that they need include a lot to give them your e mail address. In that way, you can collect it and use it for later. Okay, so maybe not to get to your home page, but to get to some deeper content on your site. You mean then then there’s ah, little there’s an access that requires email address that’s one good way to do it. Because you’re making sure that it’s not just a casual visitor, you’re having themselves collect by their level of interest. Okay, okay. What’s, what you would end up doing if you if you put it on the front of the home page, you’re going to get every tom, dick and harry that entered that in the search. They wanted to see the front page and make sure they got to the right spot. See if there’s anything of interest there at all, you make them register, you get their email address, you send out e mails. You wasted all that time, money and effort to maintain the list. And they have no interest in on what you’re offering right? Ok? Or you might even just turn people off who might have an interest, but they said just to see the home page, i have to sign in, right? Right, you’re going to get some abandonment issues, they’re for your for your web page as well, and there are people that have a legitimate reason to see your front page and can use the information, but that you don’t want to write. I love how you call it abandonment. I’m not going to put you in jargon jail for that way have jog in jail here on tony martignetti non-profit but i already know you. I said it and then you called it abandonment. I just love the you know everybody every every business has its has its language. So abandonment issues. Yes, of your plus, if you know if you having spouse problems, that could be an abandonment issue. But we’re not going that deep again. That’s a different show that’s ahold of yes that’s a whole different person. Um, abandon ministers? Yes. Alright. What about what about events? And if you’re hosting an event, maybe just put post cards on the table at the events or something like that. Anytime you’re gathering an environment where you have potential donors or potential participants, you want to make sure you’re gathering, collecting email addresses, okay, people importing them on their business cards. It’s a good way to start raffles contest, even offering as i do on my website content in exchange for the information we talked about it buying, offering by mail some sort of special report i offer electronically a report on my website and i forced people to give me their email address, so i consented to them. Okay, electronically and it’s, a much fairer trade and people who are looking for something to read like to receive free reading material and return. It makes a lot of that now. Will people see that example on the site that i gave the girl to granite hyphen p a r t dot com they will there’s a new report there on how engaged customers on the left hand column. If you click there, you’ll be able to download on a free pdf of a report guard through some research. We did a little while ago about how to engage customers. Also have tto log in. To give me your email address, i can send it to you, you’ll get a response back that tells you yes, we received your order, and if you like anything else, please let us know, and you’ll also get a confirmation of the fact that you received the order and a questionnaire about whether you like it or not. Okay, so i assume those are all the best practices because you’re doing them for your business, it’s all automatic. I don’t have to do a dog gone thing, and it makes people connected to me much better and gives them a lot more opportunity to give me feedback on the information. And unless they collect their name without creating too much of a problem with their identity and something you alluded to in that description of the way you’re recommending things go about o r non-profits go about building this list is having permission. What? What is what is permission? Marketing and how do we get permission? Permission marketing is a critical step in producing effective push down marketing. What you’re essentially doing is letting people to give you their permission to market to them. And that does two things. One engages their level of interest and let them self select what they want to receive. Two it also tell you how they want to receive it by medium, he opted in is a way of gathering permission marketing. If you send out an e mail to all your members, say ifyou’re non-profit membership organization and say, we’re updating our record, we’d like to give you would like you to give us your email address so we can communicate with you that way. Check the following boxes about what’s appropriate what the best address to use is if we have this information correct listed below. Check that and we’ll keep that. And also, if you do not like to receive anything from us, check the box below to opt out, so opt in permission has sort of past it if you give them an opt out option it’s a little less over on a lot of people to sort of ignore it, which gives you sort of tacit permission to market to them. But the trick is they’ve given you the information and are allowing you to market to them directly without being directly at fort alright, and then you as the e mailer as the non-profit have a responsibility to honor all those selections that the person has made. Absolutely. And if you don’t honor them, your reputation with that person and in general, gets tarnished to the point where it’s almost unusable, and we’ll go into that a little further with, with the a little later on. We’re talking about excel in email execution and since we’re alive, that means we’re taking calls so you can call with a question for dave about female best practices. Frustrations you might be having the number is eight seven seven for a tow for one two oh eight, seven, seven for eight o for one two. Oh, dave, now we’ve developed this list. How do we keep it clean? What’s a clean list? Well, cleanly is one that functions and deliver your message precisely where you wanted to go every time. And there are a couple of things that you need to start with. You’ve built a list that you think is right. The first thing is to make sure that what you start with is good, that we all know about computers, garbage in, garbage out. You have to make sure that you all the addresses fit and conformed to the format for proper email address. Okay. Typos, bat fingering the addresses, getting things backwards, transposing characters. Email addresses are far, far higher accuracy level than postal address. Write the e mail. I just has to be exact, right has to be perfect, another perfect every time or it will not go. I know what you have to do is check it bilich manually and electronically to make sure that all conforms and you, khun, send every piece of mail on their towards both to go ok is the simplest way to do that. To send a test email to someone to verify that on dh, then get their permission in the way you described is that is that a decent way to do it? Uh, you’re better off eyeballing a list firsthand mechanical and then going through optically and and making sure you haven’t missed anything. Because if you get things wrong, you may get stuck or trapped in filters and create problems. And what that’s going to do is block you when you get the right of duitz okay, you want to clean it up visually? First, as best you can make sure that all the symbols are right before the domain name it’s not a exclamation point instead because i’m gonna get the wrong key. Happens a lot. You can do search and replace doing this. It takes very little time. To do it electronically and then go through and i bought a list they just have to three people looking over, make sure there’s no glaring errors. You want to make sure that all the domain names that have the letters spam in them are taken out those traps put in there by the sometimes when you rent list more often than not, but occasionally somebody’ll flip one in there. When they’re registering, they’ll give you a bogus address that doesn’t really exist. You want to pull out the ones that have a domain name that’s sort of suspicious looking, you’ll learn about it after a while to make sure you’re getting exactly what you think you’re getting, okay, so to get behind to get into the content, let’s say so this wouldn’t thiss wouldn’t be people filling out cards at an event, probably or mailing back in response, it’s when registering so people might give bogus address you know i don’t have such a good hearted person, i don’t even think of e don’t even think of people cheating on something so simple is that really learned over time that it’s ok, you fill out a form somebody’s going to send you back something, and often those lists are sold over and over and over again, and by the time the third generation sale is over, you have no relevance to the list of all right, and you’re getting stuff that you really don’t want it clogging up your e mail box, and you don’t want that, so they either make up a fake address to give you so that bill passed through the filters as a legitimate address initially, or they’ll give you one that they never open, which isn’t gonna do you any good. Anyway, a lot of those gmail accounts or a well accounts that are free people will just have one of those strictly as they used to fill out all that junk drops into there. I see you don’t want to be in that list. You want to see a legitimate lift with a legitimate carrier, verizon or comcast, or or one of those for home and the businesses typically you want them to reflect the domain of the business there. Part of that tells you a legitimate what gmail but gmail dahna all those could be legitimate accounts, you couldn’t you couldn’t screen all those out? No, you can’t, but you can see one that looks, uh two, far from their real given name. If you have that to compare it to, uh, nobody’s registering, you know, as nerd sixty five jool and they’re not giving you a scientific address or their name is fred spelled backwards or something. You start to look at the bogus ones and figure it out. Okay? And since you did mention something that we hadn’t talked about in developing the list, let’s, talk a little about purchasing a list. What is that valuable for the small or midsize non-profit purchasing a list rental and compiled lists can be of value. You have to be very careful about the source if you go through a legitimate list broker and you’re looking for a very legitimate piece of a database that concerns especially business addresses. Yes, you can gain a lot out of that because those things have been double opt in check they’ve been verified on a monthly basis that they do exist and they are really and that they do fit the profile that you’ve selected when you rented the list. Now you have to keep in mind that those are usually for one time use only, and you cannot reuse them unless you have a special agreement from the renter compile lists are another story, those of those public things that you could buy that say have been scraped off of websites or have been captured out of the air from from email conversations and that kind of thing. Hackers will market these things to bring an extra bucks. They’re not very useful, they’re not very male herbal, and you’re getting into some serious spamming trouble by even attempting to use most of them because they’re loaded with with the monitors and traps and keys in their little tell people that you’re ok, then you want to be working with a legitimate company that you can verify you mentioned scraping off female what’s your trading closely to jorgen jail has, and it sort of has a a suggestion of what it is, but but i don’t want you to even be anywhere near drug in jail. So what? What is scraping somebody’s? It sounds like unsavory practice. It isn’t unsavory practice in its connotation, and it is information what you want to avoid. There are people out there, who will go to a business website and literally capture copy paste electronically scrape off every email address that’s buried in there. Your entire staff listing all your if you’re going to a law firm, they’ve got every lawyer listed on there with a love with a separate email address for them, they’re going to scrape all those off of there and compile them all into a big list. Listen, this may be legitimate, but they don’t know who they belong to or what they go to what level of persons is they have no information that goes with it, it’s just a list of addresses, as if people would really want to communicate with a bunch of lawyers or anything. There could be no manufacturing firm or, you know, the post office website or anything. They just gathered a bunch of e mail addresses from a bunch of list. Sometimes they’ll use. They’ll sort of piggyback on someone else’s, the internet activity as well, and their going from site to site start scraping through that. Okay, it gets very, very tedious and very touchy when you start doing stuff like that because you have privacy issues, you have legal issues? Uh, spam laws have teeth in them. Ladies and gentlemen, they can sue you for spamming. So you want to be careful what addresses you’re using and who you’re sending? Okay? And i didn’t want to suggest that. Buying a list from from verifiable source would be a good way of trying to get donors. I mean, as a fund-raising consultant, i didn’t mean to suggest that this is a way to acquire new donors, but maybe to acquaint someone with your with your non-profit but you’d have to be very precise in the type of list you bought in terms of the interests of the people. Is that is that possible, dave, to drill into get a list of people who are interested in, i don’t know environmental activism, and but maybe in the pacific northwest, i mean, do the lists from vera from from stable and appropriate cos come with that level of detail, some do, and some do not, uh, they’re further a head for business than they are for kapin consumer availability, drilling that deeply. Okay, if you drill down into segments that deeply on consumer list, chances are good you’re gonna have to pay a pretty penny for it. A good place to start with that if you have a specific interest, they look bilich environmental, you would want to try going to print publication that deal with that concept sierra club or audubon society or any of those that deal in environmental issues routinely subscriber list from them could be segmented by geography. And you could also rent additionally, email addresses that go with those mailing address him that way. Excellent idea. Okay, because that, yes, you know, the publications targeted. Okay, great. All right, so we need to get around that trying to pull that out of a compiled list is virtually impossible. Okay. Okay, good. Thank you. So we’ve developed our list. We understand how to get it clean and make sure it stays clean. Has to be maintained another thing, because now thing out, once you’re going to get some activity coming back from it, not only response is that you want, but response is you don’t want your going to get people that ask you to take them off. You’re going to get because you missed the target. It wasn’t who you thought it was not interested. And they don’t want you to lock up their box for the next six months with stuff they don’t need. That’s a good thing. You like getting those out of there? Because that saves you time and money. Yes, too. You’re gonna have people that were out of the office that day and i just bounced back and told you they may get hurt or they may not. Three you’re going to have bounced back for another reason, theis, and that part of the country was a little slow that day and missed something. There was a glitch in in a certain segment of the internet that went down for a moment your mail got trapped in it could be any number of other things. There’s a whole series of bounce back code that the internet service provider will give you that helps you interpret those bounce back unless you separate them out and decide whether to keep that address that is a temporary thing or whether it’s permanent it’ll tell you if you got the address wrong, if that person’s not at that address anymore. If that business is not there, that remains not active. Whatever they’ll tell you. What the problem woobox with it, when you learn how to read the code, we got to get those out of there. Once you’ve sent the first one, you’re gonna have to be prepared with how to deal with all those. Things that bounce back and those happen fairly quickly, usually within the first hour or so after you send it. Okay, so that’s that’s really list maintenance and that that’s going to be happening every time you send to your list sounds like there will be a certain level of activity depending on how little that down to practically nothing. Yeah, alright, depending on how many people you’re mailing to if it’s just a few hundred, you’ll have fewer of those which is get you in fewer because you’re making good decisions based upon those code taking the bad ones that are going to be permanently bad out. All right, you’re not re mailing, right? Okay. So, uh, well, let me just remind people that my guest is dave polish he’s, the principal of granite partners. And we’re talking about ex selling in your email execution. So then, dave, we have developed our list and it’s clean, and we’ve gotten the appropriate permissions and we know how to maintain the list over time. You have some elements of effective messaging, actually. What to say? What? What? What’s. Your first bit of advice on what the content of the message should. Be, uh, some of it is what to say, and so that is how to say it. Okay, um, the first thing you’re going to notice is that with the new influx of mobile customers that are out there that have their email come to a mobile device, you have far less real estate with which to impress the recipients you have basically a from a dress and a single subject line that’s all they’re going to see on a mobile device there’s no preview function. So what you have to do is make sure that a the address you’re sending from is from a brand they will recognize or at least understand. So whatever service you are using to send these out, if its outlook, you have to set up a box that sort of carrie’s co-branded makes sense for the outgoing mail or if it’s a service, you want to make sure that they’ve gotten you on outgoing address that reflects your brand so that they know who this thing is from and they recognize. But wouldn’t wouldn’t the service just be using your own? You’re you’re non-profit domain name, sometimes they do, and sometimes they don’t they have what’s called rotating? Yeah, what’s. A rotating what’s, a rotating. Why would they understand? Why would they rotate for the same non-profit why would they use different domain names to send from? They’ll mask them behind an existing name, so the recipient will only see your name, but they’re using ten or twelve different outgoing addresses because they could shove more down the data pipe. That way they can spread your list out, get it out the door faster, but if you’re a non-profit you want it to come from your domain, absolutely time your domain is that the physical space that your domain inhabits doesn’t allow enough passed through dahna you can’t shove enough email through it fast enough because you just don’t have enough bandwidth, you didn’t run enough stone, so what happens is they’ll spread it out and they’ll mask it. They’ll refer to your domain name. The recipient only sees your domain, which is good, but they’re using ten twelve different ones with sam filters will pick up on the sub and block things out on who’s, the who’s the day that we’re talking about is this a company like constant contact? Is that o r who’s today you’re referring to there are service providers after that do nothing but deliver both female. They are, they’re registered there, certified they’re they’re very, very compliant with the service providers that give you internet access and then actually deliver and carry the mail. This is a middleman that you would go to as a non-profit if you have a list of of ten or twenty thousand potential donors that you’re going to be sending to routinely, you’re not gonna be able to shelve twenty thousand addresses through your outlook account and with any kind of accuracy or time limit. Okay, so what you’re gonna do is anything over about two hundred names you’re gonna want to goto what provider that sends out both female for a living that’s all they do and is constant contact an example of what you’re talking about male chimp? Is that an example? Or there are eyes that i am i in the wrong line, the wrong space, you’re in a similar space in a different scale gostin contact and male chimp and those kind of things arm or of the do-it-yourself version of that, their sort of big versions of outlook, they’re attached to larger relation all databases that lets you get mail out in larger volumes by yourself from your workstation, ok, here, but if you’re sending ten and twenty thousand, even though we’re gonna have a problem, they’re going to start to bog down and go very slowly, and they’re going to use up a lot of bandwidth, okay, but for our audience of small and midsize non-profits the ones i mentioned, what might be suitable absolutely after they’re a great way to get started. If you’re looking at that between two and five thousand names of any kind. Yeah, constant contact, be a very good bargain, ok, dave, we have just a little less than a minute left. Why don’t you tell us what you think is coming next? What’s the what’s, the next generation of email going to look like email’s going to get a lot more robust in the next six months to a year, you can bet on the fact that you’ll be able to embed photographs and video in your outgoing e mail and have it be interactive and reacted currently, if you put an image in an email, you run the risk of having it be screened out by spam filters or by network. Firewall because they don’t allow images, they scan for them and they remove the as being too large, and they cut down on the volume of data traffic so they get rid of them. So if you’re putting an image in there, one of the things we tell people who don’t let the image tell the entire story, have some text that tells the story because the image probably going to make it and you see video coming in email, absolutely video will be able to be embedded in outgoing email beyond the capability we have today where it’s, just a lincoln it’s, actually resident somewhere else. We’re going to be able to actually carry video imagery on before too long. All right, we have to leave it there. I chose planned giving as the subject of my evangelism on this week’s blawg, and i’ll just share a couple of the things that i think go into being an evangelist for what you do. Yeah, i love it, you know, in my example, you gotta love plant e-giving you gotta recognize that it has value for non-profits and for donors and for their families, and recognize the good that it khun do for society as you’re helping charitable missions. So whatever it is that you want to evangelize about, you really have to love it and be unashamed about your love of it don’t talk you know sort of humbly or shyly about whatever it is you want to evangelize about, you got you need to be out in the open, you need to be enthusiastic, which should be easy because you love what it is you’re talking about, so carry that enthusiasm don’t don’t don’t talk, you know, sort of humbly about your your love of the subject you want to evangelize about lear, love of your work and and and as you’re being unashamed, spread that word, spread it to people that you work with, people who are in your network that you don’t work with, um, when the topic comes up, you know, what do you do? What do you love doing? You want to be unashamed about sharing it, and you want to use the opportunities that you have to spread the word. We’re going to talk about howto write for email fund-raising so that your messages get opened, read and respond to do so. Continuing the topic of excel ing in email execution claire so dave paulus sort of left us with write a perfect point, i think, talking about the header of the email he talked about where it’s from what’s your advice about the subject line of the email? Well, the subject line is really important because if you think about your own email use, what do you do? You’re on your iphone slip. Through it. So the subject find is very important and what you want to do, it make really some buddy. So so whatever you are promising them, you need to deliver it on the inside. All right, clara, i’ll tell you what were you sure need to repeat? Actually, what you said about the subject line because you were you’re breaking up. You’re on a landline, right? I am on a landline, and i’m hearing some feedback. Okay? I know the feedback is a little challenging. Try toe, i guess. Talk through the feedback and or maybe not listen so much, but just just talk on dh when you’re done talking, then put the earpiece back to your ear. But could you tell us again what your advice is for the subject line? I’ll do that. Ok, ok, my advice for the subject line is the subject line is going to be the thing that the person will either open it for. They will delete it so your subject line needs to be something that is really, truly news. What? What is it that you are going to be telling people or you want them to do or you want them to hear about most? So put that in there and basically only about thirty characters or so because they don’t even see the rest of us. Put your good stuff up front. Yeah, you sort of have to write that like headline, right, it’s, it’s, a lot like a headline and think about the news business and think about why you pick up a newspaper and read it it’s because of the headlines and any new yorker knows that york post the daily news, they’ve had a long history of really pretty interesting headlines that really grabs your attention. So think about the same thing with your non-profit what is your non-profits headline? And what is the headline for this newsletter that for sending people something generic, like may newsletter june newsletter? Okay, yeah, i have to. Yeah, the new york times are the sari, the daily news and the new york post. My favorite. Well, one of my favorites there’s a whole book about new york post headlines, which is it’s called topless body in head headless body in topless bar. Aunt, i have a copy of that, but it’s a headless body in topless bar from a murder. But one of my favorites was when jack cousteau’s ship crashed and the headline was calypso collapse. So isn’t that genius? I just have to show you right now, it’s go on and you’re like a save the whales organization. You’re not gonna have that to live so collapse. So are anything like that? So i think that’s pretty cool, it’s. Hard to be that clever. But those clever and you know what? If you were that clever, someone would probably open up your email. Certainly. What do you have any other advice for? The for that header information. Uh, maybe the from la who should be from or or any other advice there. Well, unless everybody knows that lisa is the head of your organization, it shouldn’t be from one person instead, make it from your organization and have it the name something that is sort of more of an action. Kind of a word. Like not information, but news. Maybe, you know, news at habitat for humanity, dot com or something like that. So give it give it a name that is a little newsy sounding might get someone’s attention better than, say, info at or or you know, something really generic and, you know, keep again, keep it really, really short. And you put the key words right up front and whatever some buzz words are that air right now in your field. So if sustainability or something is a good buzz word, that and so definitely just put the key words right up front that the main thing, okay? And you mean in the from line, so maybe sustainability at the domain is that is that what you’re suggesting? I’m talking about the subject line, so okay, you have your nature organization, and you’re always talking about sustainability, and the name of your newsletter is something with sustainability. Perhaps that could be your email address. I hadn’t thought of that, but it could be whatever, whatever you want. So that it’s recognizable and again it’s all about the brand and it’s recognizable and always be thinking about who your audience is. And i like to think of your email recipients, the people that will open the email and those are the ones we care about, the most people that actually open it, and then the few that follow through, right? Who were those people? Those are your most boyle people just like implant e-giving who were the best plan giving donors your boil donors, people, that e-giving for a long time with the people that are actually opening and reading. Your email, those who you’re really boils followers those year loyal supporters? Yes. Oh, so you’re you want you’re saying you want to have them in mind as you’re crafting your message? Exactly. Keep them in mind. What? What do they care about? So think about a few people that you know, supporters of your organizations have names and faces and think about what are they interested in? What is kathy interested in? What is robert interested in and crafted that way? Ok, on, daz were crafting our message. What’s your advice about how long it should be the subject line. Oh, no, the length of the body of the message. The body of the entire email newsletter should be chunked. So if you have, you know, one big article, you know, trumped that up into different articles. But faras length, you know, there’s. No specific lengths to into an e newsletter. It could be his long or short. As as you like. Think about the ones that you read and pattern yourself after that. If you’re bored after a certain amount of time, then your readers our board, pretty sure. Okay. What other advice have you got to share? I’ve been sort of, you know, suggesting topics, but you tell us tell me what? Your your advices. Well, here is some duitz do plan ahead. A newsletter done that’s on the fly usually looks like it’s been done on the fly. So plan your news letter ahead of time and that means preparing an editorial calendar. Maybe for the whole year. How often are you going to send these out? If you feel like you can send out one a month that’s great. And then think about what you might be doing in those months. Like, if you know, your annual report is coming out and you’re gonna have a lot of new information, then you know that khun, your main news letter might be packed with a lot of great, um, like statistical information, all kinds of cool stuff that you know about in may, but of course in december of the holidays, so you know that you can do holiday related things, so come up with an editorial calendar, so if you’re going to do it once a month, pick a day that you think is a good day to send it out when your readers are most likely to read it and then plan ahead, say well in in february and do this in march. We’re going to do that and have a couple of things knowing full well, what what’s going on if it’s september back to school and that’s important for your organization. Well, then that’s your back to school newsletter and you know you’re going tohave information about that and also decide on a goal before you do your newsletter what’s. The goal of the newsletter is the goal just oh, well, we want to tell people a bunch of stuff that’s going on. Well, that’s not a goal. What’s your real specific goal. Are you entering into a campaign? Are you announcing something? And you want everybody to know about it? Are you trying to raise money? Are you trying to get people to come to an event to sign up for a walkathon? What is the goal of the newsletter and then work backwards from what your goal is. Okay, claire, we just have about thirty seconds before the break. You mentioned planning ahead. And maybe as much as a year as you’re developing your email marketing plan. You want that? To be dovetailed with your other marketing activities, right, you might be sending print pieces as well around your events, things like that, right, absolutely. And marketing is a huge challenge for most small non-profits. The person doing marketing is also doing fifty other things, so the more planned you khun b, the easier it makes your job, so have a little marketing plan for the year, even if it’s one page and it’s a calendar, we’re going to do this in january, february, march, april, may, june, july, august and it’s all about when you send postcards. When you send email, when you send a regular newsletter and other mailing, okay, we’re going to take a break. I’m talking to claire meyerhoff and were ex selling in your email execution. Claire, you had a list of do’s that you wanted, teo continue sharing with us. Well, some other dues are due. Motivate your reader. You are sending this email to them, and you want them to do something and you need to motivate them to do it. And the easiest way to keep them unmotivated is too forthem, boring and dull. And the best way to do to motivate them is to tell them about something great that’s going on. That really would matter to them. So, do you have a really great event coming up? Do you have something really cool that you and your organization to tell people about it’s is? And news means it’s, usually something you what’s going on in your organization. That’s important to your reader? Not just what’s important to you? Yeah. You just finished your quarterly report, or or you have a new, you know, drink machine in the break room that might be important to you. But it’s not important to your readers. So think about the things that you are. Reader will think. Okay? And that’s consistent with your advice earlier just have a few people in mind and think about what’s interesting to them and write to that audience and think about what’s interesting to them also do the cocktail party saying or the or the coffee shop thing where if you ran into someone at starbucks and they said, hey, what’s new in your organization will help. Yeah, excellent, right? If you just had a couple of minutes, right? Excellent. Another any other dues? Uh, you might want to tell people why this is important now, which is usually through for fund-raising so what is going on right now? Why this is important. So if you’re an environmental organization and there’s some sort of threat that’s what you want to tell people about right now, we need to do this now you need to sign the petition. Now you need to send the money now we’re trying to fight it now your call to action it’s the call to action and make sure your call to action really is a call to action and that you’re writing matches the urgency of it. What i see a lot of times in email that i get from a lot of different non-profits is, you know, it’s sort of the henny penny email the sky is falling, they’re taking our rights away and they’re going to ruin the environment and they’re really bad, and i don’t really want to see that i want to see the action i want to see, like what you were doing, like, you know, we’ve got a bus on its way to this place full of volunteers, and they’re all going, and we need some gas money, like, i want to know what the thing is right now, the action that you’re doing that you need my help, why are you writing to may? Why is that news? So tell me that okay, before we get to your don’ts, which i’m sure you have, how do you make sure that you’re emails are consistent with your general identity for the organization? So they look like the rest of what you send out, whether it’s emails or website or or print well, that goes back to your marketing plan if you have one in some places, don’t you don’t have one it’s pretty common. So think about a couple of simple things that you always do and include that in your newsletter. So if you always have a pet of the month because you’re the animal adoption agency and you always have a pet of the month and you have a cute little name for it used that, make sure you use that in your in your identity, so use those identifiable things that you’ve already created, and if you don’t have some it’s time to create them, okay, so that’s excellent that’s the substance? What about just the appearance of the messages? How do you mean by the appear? What? What artwork? You might include the photos or our identity elements that you have for your non-profit well, i was listening todavia earlier about sending photos and e mails and how a lot of those get filtered out. So i’m definitely thinking about the photo thing because if people aren’t getting them that maybe not a great fool. I love photos if you can use photos, photos are the best and frankly, a lot of times your most loyal donors are also on facebook, and they’re a friend of your organization on facebook and as long as you’re not putting up things like ten times a day, they’re interested in being what you have there not gonna block you. Okay, so think about your facebook think about your email newsletter in conjunction with each other and how they can play off each other. So if you have a great, great photographic like the best photograph that tells the story of your mission like no other photograph, use that photograph a lot of times, repurpose it so you might want to send it in your e news letter and have it on your facebook and in your e newsletter say there are more photos like this on the facebook or on our web sights and people through the website where there are more of these great photographs and then take that really great that one great photographs and put it in your print newsletter used it on a postcard for fund-raising let’s say, you’re doing a little plan giving postcard campaign. Put that one great photo on that postcard so we use the good stuff that you have. Good, we have just about two minutes left. What are some of the don’ts that you want to share? Well, it’s funny that you say that because i try to be positive these days. So i wrote a big list. Do you have all dues and no don’t so i thought for sure. Ok, right around. Okay, well, so okay. Don’t don’t be not creative. Be creative, be creative use of environmental organization. And you just did a survey about ice source in your community. What are the top three? See, that would really get attention. So be creative with stuff. The good stuff that you have that’s interesting that your organization really had a handle on. So let’s say you are an environmental organization. You just did a big survey, and out of that survey results came the, you know, little thing that wasn’t the main focus, but in it was, you know, people complain the most about the certain areas in your county that we’re the biggest eyesores. Well, that’s a new story for you where you can say, what are the top three ugliest eyesores, the whole county. And you can do a lot with that that’s really interesting people will open up that email is your town, you know? Is this eyesore in your neighborhood? Why don’t you leave? Us with one more of your dues or however you want to phrase it dues or don’ts duse or don’t? Well, i like to talk about, you know, writing and words and storytelling, so just do tell really good stories that are about someone that affect other people don’t talk about yourself and how how great you are, talk about the people that you’re serving and how you’re solving prop emblems for people. I’ll give you this one. This is my one last tip i give everybody these days, you can’t think of a story, look at the money, find out a recent gift that you’ve got and how did you use that money? And then find the person that’s benefiting from the money that you’re using. So, for instance, if you just got a gift and you build a handicap ramp, who is benefiting from that handicapped wrapped rampant your facility to find that person and do a story about them and that’s where you find your story stories, they’re everywhere to follow the money, certainly because charities are doing good work so people who are people are benefiting those stories should be very common, right? Where’s the money. Going find, find someone benefiting from it and focus on them. And where would their life be without this organization? And where would their life be without specifically this money that just came in and how it was used? You had a big campaign. Everybody gave money, you raised thousands and thousands of dollars.
