I am starting to see fines imposed by states when clients register for the first time. Fines have always been possible when you come into compliance, but states had ignored past solicitations. Now a few are raising revenue as they welcome charities into compliance by fining them for noncompliant registrations. I’ve seen fines in Illinois and Pennsylvania.
Thanks, Barbara,
My clients all use Martignetti Planned Giving Advisors for their charity registration work. I agree that Charity Registration is fertile ground for state revenue.
Happy, Happy!
Tony,
That is bad news all around…but the registration issue has been with us for some time now. And I believe given the current economy of state budgets, I am not surprised they are looking for any way possible to boost their negative bottom lines. As a former Illinoisan (sp?) I know that budget has been in jeopardy for some time and they are doing everything and anything to raise revenue. Bad news all around – and more reason to register early and often. Don’t know if you have used http://www.clearlycompliant.com for any of your clients, but they sure make it easier.
Happy New Year!
Barbara
