Schnoll hi there and welcome back, here’s my interview with sharon abbott. Get out and communicate positively welcome to tony martignetti non-profit radio coverage of the next-gen charity conference two thousand eleven. We are at the tribeca performing arts center in downtown manhattan. With me now is sharon abila. Sharon is the author of mixing it up, the entrepreneurs new testament talk about some of her entrepreneurial success ideas and how those probably very well translate to your work in non-profits oh, and maybe some of her positive communication techniques also. Sharon abbott, welcome to the show. Thank you, tony it’s. A pleasure. Pleasure to have you, huh? Let’s, talk a little about some of your entrepreneurial success ideas with the with our audience of small and midsize charity leaders in mind. What what’s? The first thing you’d like to share. Well, what i truly believe is the better connected and non-profit is better that they will do. I taught entrepreneur skills for over twenty years to small businesses. And i would bring in and non-profit to every group that i had. And at one time, i had twenty two different groups with twenty two twenty report people in every group. I teach people how to be philanthropic to teach him to get back to their community, and what i found is the skills of the entre piers needed were the same as the non-profits needed, so i talked on how to get out in the community, how to get volunteers to work with them, how to engage other people so that they didn’t have to do all the work and how they brought in aborted director who was more proactive rather than a board of directors by name. So that made a huge difference to the non-profits ahs well, as one of the thing that’s really hard, especially when everyone perceives the economic times being as bad as they are is that people are tired of all these organisations putting out their hand just expecting a check, and so they need to get something back. And so i created all these different programs there fund-raising activities that are fun that people want to participate in that make it much easier for a non-profit to get their budget back-up where it needs to be to be self sustaining and they don’t have to work this hard so they couldn’t have ah. Lot of them do got tournaments, or they might do silent auctions, or they might do a single stance. I did a big band dance for easter seals one year i did, it was a costume party. We kind of did it like a old victorian kind of party where everybody came in as a character in the victorian era. Very themed events, right? And that way, people, they really feel like they’re participating more in the non-profit rather than just here’s a check, you know, i’m done well, let’s, go into some detail about let’s start with you mentioned getting into the community. What ideas do you have specifically that non-profits khun khun execute? Well, i know in california that almost every non-profit thinks that they just need to join a chamber and then once they join the chamber, they’re done. But the activity that they have in the chamber is actually the important part, not just joining the chamber. What would you like to see them doing? They need to be on various committees like if they were to volunteer for ambassadors. The ambassadors have to go out to every business, right? Shake hands, what you’re doing and people used to ask me, oh, you work for the chamber is no, i’m just out here helping the chamber get better known what they need to have happen in the community, and then that brought mean, more business, so i thought, well, if it works for me, it’ll work for anybody, and it does. So if non-profit goes out and they just find out from all of the different businesses what business needs and then takes it back to the chamber, their face, they’re non-profit so that’s a great way of becoming very active when they’re all trainers have fund-raising bones where non-profits can actually be feature so they could be part of the but how about beyond joining the chamber and being active in that way as an ambassador? What other advice about getting out into the community? You know, all of the leads groups that are out there, i used to run my lines with let’s, say, it’s, a business development kind of organization where people get together on a weekly basis, which most of them do, and they have coffee and everybody talks about their business, and they said this what i’m looking for this is what i have to offer so there are business leads group, and you can find them listed in the business section of every paper there’s, a website called am city dot com that list all of the business events that that are all around the country. Ok, everyone wear you just search for new york and you’ll find the in sample is going to see francisco baizman i think it’s probably the times here, but in san is a journey. So you know, it’s one of those so am city dot com and you can see every event that’s going on every week, so if you go out to a very so let’s say, you meet twenty people this week, one out of twenty will either be somebody that will be on the board, active in the community, help promote non-profit helped organize a fundraiser. Somebody in that twenty people is going to be involved with that non-profit interesting. You really want to see non-profits getting out into the business community first. First things we’ve talked about so far been making those business connections, not staying within your within the non-profit committee exactly because he wants the money, why stay? In a community where everybody knows when you go out into a community where no one knows who you are and they’re the ones who have the money, right, let’s share one more idea getting that non-profit out there most non-profits don’t realize that they can do a speaking circuit rotary lions. Quanah is all of those kinds of social organisations, and those organizations do kind of quirky things like if you talk out of turn your find a dollar, you promote your business and return to find five dollars. Well, that money is allocated to helping non-profit so if every non-profit were to go out to one of those once a week and literally their morning, noon and night, you goto seventy a week and not run out of him in a year, and so you go out to these organizations. You said, this is my cause this is what i’m doing. I need your this is why here’s, the result of what happens when we get out, they literally right chats on this spot, and i know there are a lot of these groups just in the new york area you mentioned a bunch of different professional association. But rotary isn’t there’s a rotary in every county, probably in one box there’s six you go well i know that at least one in every county. So this’s a big area right? There are a lot of opportunity plus you mentioned all the other membership organisations lion lion’s, alanis, optimus professional business women e women network really? When you look in the paper you think when i had a travel agency in nineteen ninety one justus the gulf war was starting i went out morning, noon and night six days a week and i built a travel agency from thirty thousand a month two, three hundred and seventy five thousand a month in three and a half years by doing justice so it was all handshaking and getting to know people and making sure that people knew who i was even though no one was traveling with so i hit it at the worst time but managed to build my business in a way that nobody else had ever thought they didn’t spend a dime on advertise you just had transit costs to all the meetings i’m joking you know, i think the point is very low cost plus it should be fun for executive director seo’s mean, they should be enjoying being out in the community in the business community, talking about their work. That’s. The biggest issue is people have fun when they’re doing something that they’re connecting with people. And when these organizations see how much fun that you’re having, they want to be more part of it. So when when people are making, oh, would you write me a check, or we, you know, we’re short on the budget? Could you help us out? It’s really kind of gloomy, and people don’t like being part of that, so you make it funding it, changing, talking alternative radio twenty four hours a day. I’m gonna guess you have advice about hiring, so bringing people to your organization and that starts the top, but he actually even applies to the board hiring, hiring the top. But what advice do you have about bringing people in and making sure you get people who are going to be passionate latto love the mission and the innovative thinkers way hyre these kinds of people, you know, i think one of the hardest things for non-profit is inviting people into their board of directors who actually have the connections, and that will make a difference for the organization. So there’s, a lot of people who are semi retired retired and they volunteer for non-profits but technically they don’t have the contacts and they don’t have the ability to go out in the community and start helping promote other people. So if a non-profit were to look at what your database like, do you have social media contacts? Falik what experience have you had with non-profits before? What were the results treated? Just like a job interview? So don’t take anyone on your board unless they really are bringing something to the table. That’s a huge issue there’s a lot of non-profits who just think, oh, so grateful you’ve even ask to be born or sometimes it’s way desperately need a lawyer or an accountant, so we’ll just take the first one that we that we get introduced to and we end up with just somebody who’s just brings that skill, but nothing mohr related to your to your important charitable work, and they might think that they save, you know, ten thousand a year on legal cost, but they lose one hundred thousand year by not having the right person connected with the non-profits so that’s really important that they look at, you know, what is the cost? Buy-in yes, of what a person is bringing to their nonprofit organization, right? So that’s, excellent for board recruitment. How about about hiring employees within the organization? Would you like to see ceos and executive director? I have been speaking where people are unemployed for over twenty years, and i am surprised because i have a little blank card and i have them right on their what would i like to do most of anything now that i don’t have a job? And i would say twenty percent say that. They want to work with non-profit any fashion, some even say that worked for free just so that they can beat heart of that community and giving back. When a non-profit is looking for an executive director, that person better be a network. They better be the horn shaker. They need to be up to date on technology, open minded touring, different fund-raising concept instead of the same old, same old thing. Because what work five years ago does not even come close to working today? And so they have to always on top of what the technology is. We heard this morning how text messaging is so important because the thirty year olds are now not opening email and even, you know, ten percent or everybody in the world only opens with that was that aria finger still about texting to e? J just had her as a guest before you came on, and i was talking about actually fifteen and sixteen year olds motivating them, and she said, you know, get them where they are text, right? Saving forty, two hundred messages a month for sixteen year old girls or something. Yeah, right, exactly. So you know that’s. What keeping up with technology will do for someone is always looking at what else can they do? Most non-profits don’t have a log that’s a big mistake, because that who in the non-profit you like to see doing that block duitz in the name of the executive director will be in the name of the executive director because that builds the relationship with the person who has the most visibility in the community and the most visibility and on able to make decisions for the non-profit because a lot of times you could have someone else write it in the office, but it should be in the name of the director let’s talk a little more about hiring now we’ve talked about the board, what on what the board should be looking for in the executive director. What should the executive director be doing to make sure that he or she is hiring the right people that are going to be supporting? Well, i think the skill set is going to depend on how much the non-profit is doing in the community. So if if it’s just administrative work that’s one thing that’s easy too, but the biggest give back in a non-profit is the person who has that innovative ability to figure out how they can use technology, how they khun reach out into the community, draw more people in there’s, there’s so many different things, like most people don’t realize that you can actually go to a restaurant and say, i haven’t event coming up in thirty days, and almost every restaurant will say, because you’re non-profit will donate a lung, right? And then what i would do is i would package twelve lunches and have it lunch for a year and auction it off, you know, and just simple little things like that if you have people who are willing to go out, do things like that hey, back, that employee ends up paying for their own sour, and when we’re in the hiring process, how do we make sure we’re getting somebody like that in our the questions i think would be, how do you feel about being out in the business community? Are you comfortable picking up the phone and talking to people you don’t know? You know, what would you do in a situation where we need to create a new event? What? Would you do? What would you suggest? How would we go about creating and see how people are created? There’s also facial recognition technique, and i teach a course it’s called about face, and it actually helps means clever figure out what your face tells me about how to communicate with you, but also how well you communicate with other people to someone who has a larger bottom lip is a good listener, right? It’s great if you need to listen, but if they’re the person who has to be out in the community speaking, you want them to have a larger offgrid all right, we’re going to talk more about this very, very short that just want to remind listeners that i’m with sharon abbott at the next-gen charity conference two thousand eleven in new york city. Her latest book is mixed. Is this the latest mixing it up? This’s just been revised by have eight books. Okay, we’re giving credit to this one because it’s related to our topic it’s mixing it up, the entrepreneurs new testament and you’ll find sharon abbott at sharon abbott dot com but you need to know that she spells her name s h a, r y and and two b’s and two teas and labbate and then dot com. So i should just sell the whole thing out instead of pieces. Sharon and then a. And then at the end, there’s two teas, and then after the others to be. How do we know you have busted a sharon abbott dot com? Someone who’s. A good listener has a larger lower lip. How does that why is that true? Well, back in aristotle’s time, in the fourteenth century, he began this whole study. It’s called physiognomy and judge jones in nineteen thirty five. Jones in chicago started looking at people who were presented to him in his courtroom. And he kept the law and he would have guilty. Not guilty, not guilty. And according to the jury’s findings, he was ninety percent accurate based on looking at someone’s face. So i took that information. I thought, wait a minute. What if we could use this for communication styling? So if i look at you, i know that you like it when people get to the point. You want people that you’re looking at me now, they should just e i like it when people get to the point based on what makes you draw that concern your nose. But how does a physical feature convey personality? There’s a science to it? This is actually the society of reading your face, so i know that i’m going to get to the point i’m not going to talk to take the long way around, so i’m going to actually say that she’s, right? But i think i’m a patient listener also, i don’t want your lip is larger on the bottom, then the top, so you’re a really good listener almost twice is good at listening as you are speaking and you know you’re good at speed, so the difference is all ego now blushing to what it was blushing cheeks metoo means you could still feel it must be some downsides. Where show me something, tell me about something that i’m shortcoming. Well, let’s say i needed to explain a project to you. The squareness of the bottom of your chin tells me i have to get to the point, which means i can’t tell you all about the details, but also my nose conveyed that to you to ration, but there’s there’s this point where you’re going, i don’t want to know how you’re you build it. I just want to know when it’s going to be built and so people who have a need to explain every detail will get very frustrated because you’re looking at and go, you know i’ve got things to do. You just tell me what i need to do, and we’re done. This is embarrassing now, because she’s sizing happens there’s a pretty accurate this is not like fortune telling this’s she’s going anything. Is there anything else? Oh, absolutely. All right, one more go ahead. I’m getting paid now don’t think this is actually quite insightful. This portion right above your eyebrows is now for radio listeners she’s putting her finger in between my eyebrows right in between her. I’m i mean, we’re not there’s no contact. She says they happen. There is no physical contact at all. It’s. Unbelievable. So this tells me that you like information in order. So you want to give me this first, then this then that in order. But i pluck my eyebrows. So if i had one morale straight across with that unibrow, not in style. No, this is the logic. This is, like minus flat, right she’s again, she’s. Talking about the space between her eyebrows and the forehead. Right? So i have a logical personality. You have a logical personality. So you really want things in order? First, there’s. A lot of people who you’ll see it’s just totally slanted back. Those people who they understand process, and then they immediately know how it applies to the long term physiognomy is the physiognomy, okay, that’s, the practice and google physiognomy and sharon abbott as well. We’re going to go off this now, but that was that was that was pretty much on point. Yeah, i didn’t disagree with anything. You just told me about myself. I learned something. Okay, let’s, talk a little about your, um, your positive communication technique since we’re talking about the way people like to communicate and your judging this by there by there face what are some of the positive communication techniques that people should be using? Well, i think it’s really difficult for a lot of people to stay civ in what i believe is a perceived economy. Now, i cannot argue with the numbers, you know, we do have the highest unemployment rate of this time. There are fewer people donating to non-profits, you know, you kind of get point. So how do we actually project a positive attitude when we know that this is on everyone’s mind? So my attitude is no one came along, scraped up all the money and locked it up, and they’re not magically waiting to the day that everybody says, ok, we could take the money out now so where is the money? It’s just moved, so when we’re communicating with people and we start thinking about all right, so what do i have to do to be that person that somebody wants to give, what they have allocated their ten percent toe a non-profit communicating in a positive manner instead of we need money, we need thio raise his phones. It would be when people are involved with our non-profit these this is what we’re giving back to, and the long term benefit for you is so it’s turning something around, you’re saying the same thing, but in a positive manner and making the person that you’re talking with more comfortable with the idea of being involved. So the simple technique, but it’s phrasing, how you actually phrase what you’re talking about and allowing the other person. So this is where this comes into play. If you’re talking to somebody who has a larger upper lip, you make sure that they have more than enough time to talk. Oppcoll let’s, let’s give an example of phrasing something positively that that in a positive way, we do that, that someone wouldn’t be well, take a negative and make it sort of a positive people could understand making this positive communication give me a negative. It’s i’m cold rooms cold. I’m too cold in this room instead of saying i’m too cold them and that’s an easy fix starting now, let’s, let’s put on a sweater. You don’t put on the jacket, you know let’s, move a little bit. Start getting your blood moving a little bit so that you can actually be warmer dahna but let’s say challenging one would be i called all these people and no one’s calling me back. Dahna right? And that happens a lot. You know, when when i’m actually very business oriented, which i think makes a big difference. A lot of people get into non-profit and they think it is not for-profit and non-profit have to be profit minded, so they have to know that they’re making more money than what it costs him to run the organization. So i do things like i make twenty dials. I know that ten people answer the phone. I know that if i leave five voicemail messages on ly one person’s going to call me back, is it worth my while to return those calls and call somebody who doesn’t call me back? So do i look at the possibility? That that person is out of town busy, you know, family things going on and then call them again anyway. So my rule of thumb is you take a situation where somebody nobody’s calling me back, i don’t know what to do, and then they get into that funk. So how do you turn it around? So what i found is that for every organization there is a time a day, a day of the week that has the best return, so i call on monday morning at nine o’clock i’m not likely to get the right people that answer the phone because they’re setting up their week. They’ve got their sales meetings, whatever is going so i know that if i call thirty, people are kind of wrapping up their morning and they’re getting ready for lunch if i call it one thirty they’ve just gotten back for lunch. They might be late back from lunch so there’s these windows of time ten to eleven one, two, three and i know that monday’s not the best day in friday’s, not the best day. So if i make my calls tuesday, wednesday and thursday then i’m gonna have a much better ratio if i can improve my ratios even ten percent, then i improve my bottom once. So why not treat a business like a non-profit as a true business and actually track what we’re doing having results so that we know that if this isn’t working, we have to sure and start doing something else. Most people keep doing the same thing over and over again, and it drives them crazy, right? The definition of insanity, but they don’t never realise all need to do a shift. What it is that they’re doing so that they end up having better results. We have to stop there. Sharon abbott, one of her eight books is mixing it up. Well, there’s a lot of very interesting data that we can look at as non-profits to try and find some potential new donors for us as well as maybe some people who are current donors that we just didn’t realize are connected to public companies as corporate insiders. So let’s talk about corporate insiders because i want to make sure that everybody really understands what that is. We hear so much, i guess, in the news about insider trading and it’s always, you know, portrayed in a negative light, and that means that people who are corporate insiders have done something illegal with information they have as as insiders. But basically, if you’re an inside, earthy defines you as falling into one of three categories, you’re either one of the top officers of the company, usually there’s about five, six, seven people around that number listed. You are one of the board of directors of that public company, or you just happen to be a person or an entity that holds ten percent or more of the outstanding stock of that company. So if you fall into one of those three categories, you must report all of your trading activity in that company to the securities and exchange commission. And all of that data is public knowledge. Okay, so insiders have to file with the company’s about there their holdings within the companies that they’re insiders for that’s, right? And then also, public companies also file with the sec. They must right. Right? Right. So, i mean, you know, the information can be found if you happen to know that a particular process effect is connected to a public company as a corporate insider, maybe they sit on the corporate board of that particular company. You can actually go to that company’s website. And typically the tab that you would be looking for in a company’s website is called investor relations. Ok, for the companies themselves do have the data. All right, on course. We can also get it from the sec. But before we go further let’s, keep it. Let’s, keep each other out of jargon jail. Let’s. Make sure everybody understands what is a public company. So a public company is a company that is has issued stock and its trading on the market. I guess the most famous one that we saw go from a a private to a public company recently with facebook. Right? So, prior to that, all of the information was private. Uh, no. No information had to be released to the public about salary information att saturday. Other compensation data. But now that they’re a public company and the public now owns shares of that company owns part of the company, they have to be able to report all the all the goings on all the various pilings about, you know not only what the corporate insiders were doing, but obviously all the data related to other financial information for the company. Okay, it’s, the difference between privately held on dh public that’s. Right? Ok. So what kind of data can we find about? About what we’re interested in the people, the insiders. What kind of people? What kind of info can we find? Well, the interesting information you confined if somebody is a top officer at the company, you confined their their salary and other compensation data, and they actually have charts of that data going back over a three year period so you can actually see whether they’ve had what their big salary wass what commit other compensation that they might have maybe bonuses, etcetera? Um, really key? I think teo looking at this data is stock ownership because very often a non-profit especially if they are in, say, in a capital campaign or an endowment campaign mode where they’re really looking for major gift, i’m trying to get a gift of appreciated stock, a supposed to getting a gift of outright cash from a particular donor could be very beneficial, so, you know, just understanding whether or not you have people in your own fund-raising database, whether or not they may be one of these corporate insiders who khun gift you stock, that would be fabulous to know. And, you know, the screening companies can help identify that for you if you’re not able to self identify who those corporate insiders are in your database, okay? And there could be other there’s other stuff that’s disclosed as well, like all their their fringe benefits and things right, which can include insurance policies, that’s, right, all their employment agreement. You know, you’ve heard of people who have these golden parachutes, right? If they’re released from a company. So all of that is actually outlined in these particular employment agreements eyes that maria, i’m sorry is the agreements themselves or public? So, yeah, they they actually will say, you know, if this person is terminated, thiss personnel will be subject to earning x number of dollars, maybe even shares of stock upon their termination. But i’m just curious, can you actually see the language of their employment contract or that i don’t see is the language of the employment contract, but within the proxy statements which is filing statement that this information is contained within that’s where you would find really that the juicy, the meat of it all that if that is of importance to you, if you have somebody who is, perhaps, you know, a corporate insider and maybe, uh, you know, has just been let go or will be let go, you can actually find that information was just like looking i would if i could see people’s employment. Contracts, but now just some juicy details. Yeah, exactly details, no other juicy details that i like pulling out of this is also bios of the dads, the entire board of directors of, ah, of a public company, so it’ll give somebody’s age. So right? Yeah. I mean, you know, you do plan giving tony, so understanding whether or not somebody is maybe perhaps even a prime planned e-giving prospect based upon their age that’s disclosed in this statement you have a bio that would contain where they’re currently employed other corporate boards that they sit on so very often i’ll read about bio, yeah, within a corporate proxy, and then i’ll realize, oh, i didn’t realize this person also sat on another board of directors, so their insider over there, too, right? So then that makes me, you know, have to, you know, then i know just from that key piece of information here’s, another area i need to explore as i’m doing my prospect research that they may actually own, you know, significant shares in this other companies, right and it’s, just to remind people that in a way that you might find that someone is an insider. Because you might not know it is setting up the google alerts, the free google lorts that you and i have talked about a couple of times in the past, if you have those on your major donors, then information about them and the company that they’re an insider for we’ll come right to your rage. Your inbox? Yes, i think it should you know why? Because when they have let’s say i maria semple, where a corporate insider, maybe i sat on the board of directors of the company. I just used to use me as an example, but now you’ve learned yeah, point likelihood of that ever happening. So so even test really small it’s not even worth it. You’ll start using one of your other regular control, anybody but me. Yeah, you’re much better off if you have much good or likelihood of being inside. If i traded today in a public company and i were a corporate insider, i need to let the know within two business days. Oh, wow. Yeah. So, you know, from a product you know, as a prospect researcher it’s. Terrific. Because you know that if you’re looking at particular filings, you will be able to see whether that person has how much stock they have within a two day accuracy period. Okay, that’s. Incredible. So, yeah, well, all of that came about, you know, and because of the recent financial meltdown, et cetera, in the early two thousand’s, but there was definitely some new laws that went into a fake into effect under the sarbanes oxley act. And so they ended up saying, okay, you know what? You used to have a longer period, so let us now. Now we’re shortening it two days since you mentioned plan giving earlier something else you might find out about his people’s retirement plans with the cup with the company that’s, right? That’s, right. So might give you some some idea there as well, whether or not they’re gonna have maybe, you know, a significant amount of money that they were going to have to do something with. So, you know, why not know about that? And be prepared to have a conversation with them? So we have just about a minute and a half before our first break. What? So you mentioned the proxy statement. That’s. One thing that has to be filed. That’s filed by the companies or by the insiders, those air filed by the company’s once a year, once a year, they’re filed with the securities and exchange commission. They’re known as to other things actually notice of annual meeting of shareholders. You might see it turned that way, and then everyone of the filings that the sec has has a number and the number that corresponds to these this particular sec document is called death. D f like frank death fourteen a and that’s filed once a year by the company. Okay. And those air all the different names for the proxy statement? Yeah, yeah, i mean, they’re they’re known as all these different things. But if you are on the website, you’re actually looking for form death fourteen a for that particular company again. It’s on the company’s website, though, is well. Ok, now we have just about thirty seconds before before our break. There’s there’s annual and quarterly statements also, right? Yes, there are. There are definitely annual in quarterly statements and they’re they’re more related to significant happenings within the company related to really financial goings on of the company itself as opposed to individuals connected. To the company. So for the most part, that’s, the type of information that they’re going to file annually quarterly. Okay, we have to take a break when we return. Welcome back. I’m glad you’re still with us with a cracked voice cracks again again, like a thirteen year old maria, just briefly. What are the seance? Isn’t important to know the file. Name the names of some of these forms. What do these annual and quarterly statements called that people will be looking for? Well, if you’re looking for those quarterly and annual statements ten k and a k or those statements. But there are others that i think are even more interesting in terms of prospect research. In addition to that proxy, the death of fourteen a there’s, something called a form three and a form four. So form three is is the initial report that is filed by insiders as of the date that they become an insider or a beneficial owner of stock that will lift their holdings as of that day now, i would’ve thought that would be formed one but that’s not forme one yeah called form. Okay, i don’t want confuse people, all right? It should be for more that i find very interest. Sting is called form for, which would show any changes and holdings anytime that insider buys or sells their insider, stock and that’s the form that i was referring to that actually has to be filed within that two day period of that stock chance transactions. So let’s say there’s an example. Maybe a proxy filing may have been done and say, april this year for a particular public company. And here it is the beginning of september where researching this particular corporate insider if we only go on the data that was filed on the death of fourteen a document that proxy and it’s going to show this stockholdings as of april twenty twelve um, there’s a lot of time that has passed several months. Did this person trade any stock during this time? We would like to know what their their holdings they’re still the same or not. So you would be looking particularly performed for to see if that person actually made a trade in stop between april and september, and then on the form itself it’s going to show you whether they border, sold more stock, and then how many shares that they hold at the conclusion of that sale? So let’s say the conclusion of that particular transaction. I still own ten thousand shares. Of that particular stock, i can go on a web site that shows, you know, market activity. Boone is showing, you know, what’s going on in the stock market and get a general idea of how much that stock is worth in that portfolio. All right. You mentioned the corporate website under investor relations and investor information as one place to find this data where else the government has its sec has its own site. Yes, the sea, which is dot gov does have a database called edgar free edgar’s. So that is definitely something that you can use. Teo, look for the information and using the website or even going to the corporate website is free to d’oh. Okay, edgar, i had always heard of edgar, but i didn’t know that it stands for electronic data gathering analysis and retrieval. Yeah, that isn’t that smart of the is in that little clever of the sec. So they should have make a retrievable info analysis. And there would be maria. There you go. You should have maria get rid of edgar and replace it with maria way. Just have, like we just have about two minutes left. What are other? Sites where you can find this, even though we’ve already identified some free ones. Right? So a fee based site, actually, one that i myself subscribe to because i do so much of this type of research is called ten k wizard dot com and that’s actually part of the morning star document research of companies. So it used to be a stand alone, and now they’re part of morningstar. So ten k wizard, i find to be really useful. Their lowest subscription is roughly four hundred dollars a year, and it enables you to i just like the output of the data. I like the fact that i can put in an insider’s name, and it will show me every place somebody is connected to a corporate insider to lead me directly to the filings. And i can see a pdf copy of the filings. So it’s it’s just a quicker way. So i would suggest for anybody who’s really going to be doing a lot of this. You might want to consider a subscription service. Okay. Oh, really? They just worked. Works better than the edgar site or going to the companies. You know it. I think it. Just points to a lot of information very quickly, so as opposed to trying to sort through the information on the corporate side, etcetera, teo, sort through, say all the form four filings that exist on a corporate site to just see well, because it’ll just say form for, you know, and say the filing he’ll need to try and figure out what is this filing related to the person that i’m researching right now? Yeah. So, it’s, just the way you go about the research, i think it just becomes a little bit more efficient on some of the paid resource. Is maria simple is the prospect finder. Welcome back to big non-profit ideas for the other ninety five percent here’s. My interview with suzanne felder from fund-raising day earlier this year. Welcome to tony martignetti non-profit radio coverage of fund-raising day two thousand twelve, hosted by the association of fund-raising professionals, greater new york city chapter, with the marriott marquis hotel in times square, new york city. With me now is suzanne felder. Suzanne is a consultant in outplacement, with firmly hecht harrison, susanne, welcome, thank you, pleasure to be here. I’m glad to have you. Thank you, thanks for taking time on a busy day. Your seminar topic is i had a great interview, but i didn’t get the job. We’re talking about successful interviewing techniques and doing a lot of interviews today at the conference. But this is the only one to help jobseekers, so generally, we’ll have time for details, but generally what do you see peoples shortcomings in around interviewing? The biggest problem is that people really don’t understand the job that they’re interviewing for the best practices is to really figure out what is the company looking for in you and two show the best sides of what your talents are to meet the company’s needs and people just don’t take the time to really figure that out, so that so it sounds like research research research is the place to start. So it’s just, uh, set the scene. We’ve we’ve seen a job advertised or we’ve heard about a job from a colleague what’s the research we should do around the job and the company well, we certainly want to find out everything about that company, see what they do with their mission, whether it’s in the for-profit or not-for-profits sector company, i mean charity charity, right? Right. So find out, do some research about them. Oh, and then go to lincoln and find maybe some people in your network that might be affiliated with that non-profit or in the past have been with that non-profit and do some real good. On the ground research ask people about the culture, find out what they’re commitments are and if it really suits your own style and if that’s true, then keep pursuing it and reach out to that non-profit and see if there might be some interest on their part. Okay, now, if it happens to be a bigger organization, you’re going to be working in one business unit of of the charity. How can you find out about what that team or that department’s culture is like? Um, you really are asking your friends what they know about that, even if they haven’t worked there, you know, people have a long reach on, they tend to know people who know people who at one point lived, you know, work there. So it’s really about networking effectively? I can’t say enough about the importance of networking in this market. We have find that about seventy five to eighty percent of people are getting their jobs through direct networking. Oh, meaning they’re they’re finding out about the jobs that hit this hidden job market that we hear about definitely there’s a hidden job to talk about that so and what that is, and why networking helps you break through it well, sometimes non-profits agencies even businesses or not in the position to really announce that they’re looking for whatever their reason is, but they’re sort of on the look out privately, so it’s it’s worthwhile to be having conversations with people and suggesting that you are interested in various really named the targeted cos that you’re interested in pursuing and then have conversations with people that are in a position to hyre because sometimes hiring managers are not ready to hyre but once they know something about your background, you’re on their radar. Okay, that’s, the way to really advance yourself for the future when the job actually becomes a reality. Now i think it’s a bad practice you’d tell me if i’m right, you’re welcome to say that i’m wrong that really you just start your networking when you start your job search well, networking. Actually, i have two didn’t disagree with you because networking should be something that’s going on on. Well, you know, actually i guess i don’t say i’m training coach people tohave a gn active network at all time at all times, you don’t just start when you’re in a job search, completely agree that’s, right and that’s what what we find is that people often are saying to us that have had long runs with really good non-profits and for-profit court cos that they really lost track of the importance of their network, they were doing well with the company that we’re there for ten years, they were going up the ranks, and they just sort of people left the firm, and they didn’t keep shack where they went, and now all of a sudden they’re looking to re and find them, and it feels a little awkward to them, like, you know, they had for gotten them. And now that they’re in the different side of the table, it’s ah it’s a big awakening, and they’re saying now they will never do that again. They will be available for people and keep their network engaged well and that’s, right and that’s the other side of networking, i mean, you have to be available to help others when you’re not in need of help yourself. Absolutely it’s about being a giver on we took about donors thes it’s giving of yourself and that’s an ongoing thing and the people who it’s funny what i have found personally is that people who have often been helping others helping others always through their career, they feel most reticent about asking they feel like they should be the ones just helping and i say to them, you’ve been so kind, it’s it’s, time for you to receive its it’s pay back time for you and please do not ever feel remiss about that, especially if you’ve been giving but interesting there’s so accustomed to giving that they’re reluctant to approach their their own network. Yeah, receiving is a lot harder for them and and i understand that, but it’s been kind it’s time tio gets him something back and and it’s perfectly acceptable, and what we are finding is that people are more than willing to be helpful. People that never were expected to be helpful are becoming the most helpful. So the second tier, the third tier of their degree of separation, if you will are, tend to be the most helpful, because don’t we all want to just help people? Don’t most people want to help others? One would think, but now, in this process, you find out who really is genuine and who is less and then those that are very close to us, they just might not be able to help in a substantial way, so they feel like they should hang back and not be too close to you because they feel badly they can help. But this is the time when we really need people tio be there for us, even if it’s just emotionally to be understanding that you’re going to get through it. But it’s a challenge, and we’re talking a lot about networking with friends or friends of friends. What about going to networking events? Where it’s a room full of strangers, that’s always a good process to get good at it’s like a social experience because people really have a hard time talking to strangers. So we heavily encourage people to go to conferences, professional conferences, places where they’re goingto be around people like themselves who are from their field and just get more and more comfortable with talking, if you will. Talking to strangers. Yeah, where? And i imagine that helps in the interview process completely completely what? We do it. We have harrison as we give them the opportunity to comfortably talk about themselves, which is not very natural for people. You know what? Tell me about yourself, and what do you do, and what do you good at? Is not what comes off of most people’s tongue, naturally, so we give them opportunities to always be introducing themselves and give them lots of networking groups to join, and people just come out of their shells. It’s. Remarkable how, after a couple of months of being around others, they are perfectly comfortable. Do that, yes, talking alternative radio, twenty four hours a day. All came from doing the right research around the job and the culture of the organization. As much as you can find out about the organization, right in your seminar description, there are three r’s and researchers the first, but resource is what’s. Your advice around resource is on resource is finding out. What you bring to the table? What what resource is that the candidate brings us? I believe that’s the idea that we’re getting at how can you help that organization and pinpointing what your real strengths are and how that can help advance that organization? That’s really what you want toe buy-in part to them and you’ll find out about the organization’s needs as you’re doing your due diligence your research find out you might find out some of the shortcomings that the organization has and see how you can plug those gaps. Absolutely, you want to know what value khun ad so you might brings a special connection or a special perspective to that non-profit you know, say it’s, a science institution, and you happen to have a background in science that’s evaluated that is extremely important, and you’re not the average say fundraiser, if that’s your field, your friendraising that happens to really know a lot about science, and therefore you could speak more passionately about it, so that would be really important aspect that you want to bring out to the non-profit do you have specific advice around? Uh uh, when your subject hector ah panel interview i mean, the panel could be two people, but it could be as many as five or six. Wait, how do we that’s incredibly intimidating you walking into a room of let’s say it’s the worst case? Six strangers and they’re all sitting on the other side of the table. How do you prep yourself for that that’s? A real challenge is one that we do address because it’s called like the stress interview and it’s to see how you stand up in extremely unusual circumstance. What you normally would not be the target of a conversation like that in real life. So we tell people, introduce yourself to each person individually. Make sure that you have eye contact with each person and shake their hand. Make yourself known and remember their name so shake their hand. Just go down the line of the table is absolutely when you were coming room. Yes, when you come in, introduce yourself individually to each of them make an impression on them that you’re confident and you know you want to engage with them. And then if the questions are coming a little bit too fast and too furious, there are ways to slow it down a bit of humor, and that always helps break the ice a bit, because sometimes people just lose sight of the fact that you’re only a person and you’re a pit under under the gun. So i’ve had a client to have said things like, oh, i made it like it was jeopardy, and i say, all right, i’ll take i’ll take jim for two hundred, and then i’m going to take, you know, the next person, arlene arlene five hundred. Yeah, so it kind of everyone has to laugh at that because you realize that, you know, how many can you do it once? Obviously, it’s, just one on. They are trying to see what? What it’s like for you to trial under fire? S o we try to get people to realize that humor is a good thing and it helps people relax as well. Helps you relax. You can always take a drink of water. Give yourself a moment to think, and companies are looking to see what what you’re about. You also have to realize if that is their culture, to be that way, to be very in your face. You have to. Know is that for you? Is that is that you? Yes. Yeah. It may not be for you about about preparing for the serial interview. You know, you’re going to have three interviews in the day. Each one is going to be a test forty five minutes. I would think. How do you how do you prepare for that? That multiple interview where you could be on you could be on for close to three hours in a row, but with three different people, right? Ah, you want to be prepared to give a good examples of a variety of things that you’re about, like different facets of a diamond and you don’t wantto be repeating the same story of store three times. And then there are other they say, oh, yeah, she told me that he told me that story. I heard that already. So you can have to come prepared for your interview with good what we call them accomplishment stories, if you will, on s o that joe have maybe six or eight really important projects that you’ve worked on that will really show you off to best advantage. You can come in with a portfolio and have some point of keywords for yourself to remember that you want to make sure that this project gets put on the table and then you mix it up so that everybody is hearing some different stories out of you, and each can bring out different facets of what makes you successful growth that you’ve money that you’ve brought in from non-profit have you created new event? Have you doing outreach brought in new community members brought on board members? These are things that are important, usually to fund-raising organ operations? What if i feel that i’ve gotten a question that’s inappropriate or illegal around age or pregnancy or sexual orientation? How do i how do i handle that in that moment? Yes, in that moment, you might want to say, can you rephrase that question? Or is that a chance to give him a chance to realize that that might be a really uncomfortable thing to be talking about and that you sort of object? T getting that question, john, you might say, is that relevant to the job? Or i’ve heard people say they’re asked whether or not they have young children, obviously the employer is trying to get at are you going to be away if the child is sick eyes so sometimes people will say, oh, is this a very, very family oriented company is, you know, doo doo doo family events? Is that why you’re asking so you try to soften it? You try not to be in their face about the fact that that’s really overstepping their bounds, but to some extent you have to pick your battles because you are looking for the job. So although this does also inform the culture of the organization that it might not be the right fit completely completely do take note that if they’re overstepping that this might be a real invasive place and that they’re expecting a whole lot from you, that is really not normal. And that might not be if you say a good fit. Alright, um the third of the three r’s thatyou have his references it’s important who you select for your references, what’s your what’s your advice around that references can go back twenty years. I could go back from beginning of your career. I don’t think people think of that. I think they think of the last job, right? And that is certainly not the whole scope of what is appropriate to use references khun b people that were above you people, that it could be people that reported to you, it could be your peers, pier level. It can be your boss’s boss anyone that knew the quality of your work and speak for you, but those are appropriate references. They could also be if it’s for a community organization. It might be something that you do on your private time, that you’d like to have that person report in about your experience with you, perhaps in your community service. So you want to get a variety of references that will reflect all sides of what your background is, good people. When they’re asked tio provide a reference often asked, what do you want me to say? You know what? Should i talk about it? It’s okay, give that advice around what, what you’d like them to be specific about. Yes, it is, because oftentimes if you’ve worked with someone five years ago, they might forget exactly which projects you worked on together, so people kind of need prompting, like so you want to remind them, remember we did this such and such together. And we had this result. So by you, sort of writing out some pointers about what your relationship together was, like it’s really informative. It helps them. It takes them off the hook of the pressure of oh, i forgot. What am i going to say? And it’s also you feeding them what you felt was the most important aspect of the project so that they’re goingto right. Quite cogently and importantly about what you did. Yeah, and it might just be a conversation to a lot of references. I just checked my phone. No. Yes. That’s right now, another thing about references. When you have a company, the company you might have just come from in the corporate world. This is very true. The company often will on ly just verify that you worked there and how long that you worked there. So that can be a bit of a problem. If you know your best references of the people that are still there. The way to overcome that would be to look at people that have gone on, moved on to another organization, and then they’re not under that up that corporate policy hr restriction of not being able to give a reference, but you don’t see that so much in charities that unwillingness to say more than just confirm data report it’s not a strict it doesn’t seem to be a strict people are a little more willing to talk about the other thing that people are very surprised about is that cos you can ask what person salary was and you know, it can be verified. The new employer can ask for your w two, which seems really invasive to find out what did you actually make on labor napor connects with you too. You can ask your w two. So it’s, when you talked about salary, which is a whole other chapter, you know, how do you dodge the salary question, which we do recommend that you try to keep that salary question off to the side as best you can, okay, but at a certain point, they’re gonna want to know, are you like within the ballpark of the range that they’re interested in on? You can always say, this is what my package was. This is where i left off at and then just back away from it and say, i’m very interested in this organization and i really it’s more important to me to talk to you about the opportunity, and we could always i’m sure if we’re on the same page, we’ll come to a mutually agreeable point with salary. Okay, well, i was going to ask how to dodge the salary question, but you just you just did it. Yeah, it’s that important? I think everyone is very nervous that they’re going to be put on the spot. Now, when you’re working with the recruiter, it seems to be an easier conversation to have because the recruiter is representing you and the recruiter wants to know, are you in the ballpark for what they will go for? You know, if you’re completely at a different salary rate much hyre it might be a fruit, you know, footless kind of conversations. So you do want to be forthright with the recruiter? Ah, you try to keep that conversation in the background if you’re going directly in number about the last hyre half hour before the interview so my remains of your scheduled for two thirty it’s now two o’clock let’s say i’m already on site. I’ve arrived, so i guess your advices get there early, i presume? Yes, to make sure you’re not late. Yes. Okay. Now what do i do with this last half hour? Last half hour. Okay, so you’re coming in. You certainly want to have at least fifteen minutes to be ableto fill out any forms if they have them. So that there’s going to be at least fifteen minutes. It’s going to be for that show up early is that we show up early before. Oh, certainly show up early on. That gives you a time, tio, really? Look around and assess what you’re seeing. Look att the interaction of the people in the organization with the receptionist and i see the culture. You could really learn a lot by just watching and observing. Twenty minutes, right? Absolutely. Come and go watch people come and go. And if the receptionist is not busy, have a chat with the receptionist. You learn a lot about the organization, find out what their experience has been. Have they’ve been there a long time? It is a lot of benefit that you could actually gather, and then it helps inform you of howto handle. Yourself in the interview, you might learn of events that are coming up for a special project that are on the table that you might not have known. So it’s always a good idea to be highly respectful and interactive, if you can, with the front desk, because that front test person is going to be giving the first frontline response to the hiring person as to what was your impression? Oh, they might receptionist might actually be asked. Absolutely. And if you come in all huffy and and annoyed and you didn’t get through security fast enough and whatever happened, then you come in all in a in a rage. They’re taking note because you’re on, you’re on from the minute you walk in that door. Okay, so collect your thoughts, get yourself together and remember, the clock starts when you walk in that door at reception. Okay? Okay. Um, we have just maybe a minute or so men and a half left. What about the resume? You have advice around resumes, resumes or something that can be targeted, targeted for particular jobs. Don’t think of your resume as a static item that just is the same for every place that you’re applying for because each job has slightly different requirements. And just like you have many facets, you want a feature? The ones that are most important to that non-profit so you do want to tailor your resume to be very appealing to their needs. We certainly suggest a summary statement. This is that used to be years ago. You did an objective. Okay. And now, it’s really about summarize you quickly summarize your strength, what your capabilities are, and then you go into your accomplishment statements. Okay? We have a couple seconds left. Anything else you want to say about resumes? Well, allows you specifically length if i’ve been in the non-profit world for fifteen, seventeen years, is it okay to have a two three page resume? Two pages, the limit? People get a little weary of reading and you don’t have if you’re going twenty, twenty five years, you don’t have to give all your experience. You could just give, like the last fifteen years is certainly enough. And you could always speak to further back. They are interested. Okay? We’re gonna wrap it up. They’re terrific. You’ll find them at shaare share it dot or ge rochelle served as a law clerk to supreme court justice Ruth bader ginsburg in 19:90 nine since sharks are its founding in two thousand won, they have launched eleven national programs, responded more than more than nineteen thousand calls and e mails request for help from those affected by breast cancer. Sure, shoretz programs and services are now open to all women and men deshele record lectures a lot about breast cancer for audiences across the country. She is a member of the federal advisory committee on breast cancer in young women. You may have seen her on the today show, cbs news or fox news today. She’s on tony martignetti non-profit radio deshele welcome. Thank you. I’m very glad that you’re with us from teaneck. How are you doing out here? Supplier? We’re good, we’re good, we’re getting. Some nicer weather. Okay, um, you’re you founded sharks. Share it. I think around a kitchen table dining room table was done. I’m sorry. Had the wrong room. Okay, well, it’s a bigger issue. I mean, maybe you don’t have anything. You don’t have an eat in kitchen. Sorry, iraq. Okay, so it’s around a dining room table. Since we’re talking about storytelling, why don’t you take a moment and tell that dining room table story? Sure. Well, i was diagnosed with breast cancer for the first time when i was just twenty eight years old, and it occurred to me that although we had so many organizations for breast camps are advocacy research, we didn’t have an organization that address some of the unique needs of young women facing breast cancer and those metoo could include, i think, like fertility, career, parenting, genetic, social life, relationships on everywhere i went, i happened to be the youngest woman in the waiting room by an average of twenty years. And so shar sharon began as an effort, really, to collect the stories of and the experiences of young people facing breast cancer and more even more specifically, jewish women and families. Facing breast cancer because jewish families tend to have an increased risk of hereditary breast cancer could be ten times higher than the average than the average woman. And so there were fight of us around the table that first night, that dining room table on by, you know, talked about the need for an organization that address some of those unique concerns. Way were five, and then we became ten. And now we’re more than sixteen hundred pier supporters nationwide. Alright, on dh. What is the the annual budget of short, sheriff? Give people a sense. Uh, when you’re eleven, which is what we are in now, the annual budget is about one point, eight million dollars. All right. And how many employees? We have fourteen, staff people, and we run eleven national programs with the help of more than five thousand volunteers nationwide, you have very heartfelt, compelling videos on the site and some on youtube. How do you find your story tellers? You know, we really we reach out in lots of different ways. And i think in our experience, we found that the more with the more we reach and in the more diverse in the more diverse mode abilities we used to reach women, the more diverse the stories we get back, we find stories in a few ways. First, we find them through social media using facebook and twitter and ask people to share their stories whether it’s on thanksgiving day, for example, we might ask people toe right in what they’re thankful for. As a young breast cancer survivor on twitter, we might say, you know, tweet us, you know, the things that you’re most great napor in twenty twelve find some of our stories on social media, we use our blogged to share stories, but also to get storytellers to share their email sometimes will do an e mail blast and a good example of that was my fortieth birthday, which was just a couple of weeks ago. I shared my fortieth birthday wish, and we asked others to share theirs as well. And so we got some stories that we were going to talk about that later on because you got a great response. I know too, that to that talk about them very traditional means of focus groups, for example, where we have women come into the office and share. Their stories and we can either take those weaken, videotape them, audiotape them on, and then have them transcribed so that we can use them for other purposes, okay? And we’re going to have a chance to talk to you about some of the those i don’t know. I don’t mean to sound heart like, you know, cold calling them channels, but methods something different methods like the like the face-to-face focus groups that your record, but right now i’m just trying to focus on how you identify storytellers, and sometimes they just come to you, write and tell you that they want to share their story with others. Sometimes they dio, you know, for some breast cancer survivors, that could be a very empowering way to close the loop on their breast cancer experience, where they’re sharing their story in the hopes of inspiring and empowering others. Sometimes we have to reach out and encourage people to share their stories, whether it’s with incentives or just by explaining to them that that’s another way of contributing to the organization in a non financial capacity on dh. Sometimes we, you know, it’s sort of low hanging fruit they’re already sharing. A piece of their story we can tell that it’s a compelling story, and so we reach out and just sort of nudge them along and say, you know, you told us a little bit about your experience, but we could, you know, we would really benefit from sharing that same story with, you know, lots of people and, you know, would you mind sharing some more? So we find them of those ways you can view this as a cz, a volunteer opportunity, and we dio, you know, sometimes people think that being a volunteer means coming into the office or e-giving tremendous amounts of time or contributing in terms of dollars, but really, being a storytelling could be a wonderful volunteer opportunity that doesn’t require people to go too much out of their way or tio reach into their pockets, and sometimes these stories are written right on dh, sometimes video or audio recorded that’s right on, and then sometimes they can be longer, and sometimes they can be shorter. You know, a tweet, for example, is one hundred forty character. The facebook post might be a paragraph a block post might be three paragraphs some might be written, some people feel much more comfortable writing, but others feel more comfortable speaking and in whatever way we can capture their story. That helps us. That helps us collect more stories because we find people in lots of who feel comfortable with different avenues of expression. How do you overcome the conundrum that people might like, tio, write their story. But on the web, viewers are more interested in watching video than than reading, you know, that’s, an important that’s important challenge that i think we all face in the nonprofit sector. You know, people feel more in control in some ways of the written word and certainly more comfortable behind the pen and behind the camera. But we find that our viewers really liketo watch on and it’s easier to share when we can just ask them to it’s linked to something on youtube or share a web based link. You know, we try to we try to identify those who will come across well on camera whose stories just feel more compelling because they have a great almost like a stage presence in a certain way. Sometimes we used basic incentive, you know. Come on in for. A day of videotaping, and that encourages people tio take the leap, and sometimes we just note that it doesn’t have to be a professional camera set up. You know, it could be your iphone, for example, that you stick on video mode and just shoot yourself speaking honestly into the camera, so we try to make it not to professional and too intimidating, because as you said, the truth is people to respond mohr two videos in some ways than they do to the written word, and we’ve had many guests on say that video does not have to be high production value to be compelling and sincere and moving. I think that that’s true, but i would take issue with one piece of it, i think, as a non-profit leader, one of the things we’re always watching for quality control and brand management, and so an organization like ours that really strives to keep a very professional face it. There are so many breast cancer organizations that are not necessarily as as focused on that sort of professional, the professionalism with which we pride ourselves. We really struggled with that balance on the one hand, no, it doesn’t. Have to be a twenty thousand dollar two minute clip. On the other hand, when we send something out that is videotaped on a shaky camera or that doesn’t look professional, it does in some way reflect on our own ground. And so we walk a fine line between sort of that honest, almost raw quality of video and something that looks too professional to polish to almost too and focus on attacking at heartstrings say a little more about some of the my voice is cracked like i’m a fourteen year old more me, me and we’re not even in the same room bonem it’s that your charm comes across the phone line, you say a little more about the contest you mentioned and some of the incentives that you might offer toe to induce women or men to tell their story? Yeah, you know, sometimes it could be something as simple as dinner, right? When we do a focus group in our office will say, you know, they’ll dinner is served at seven, you know? Come share your story and people will come around the table and the focus groups i should emphasize they’re not just for storytelling. Although that is an integral part of what ends up happening inevitably it’s also an opportunity for us to get feedback on programs and fund-raising initiatives and other core aspects of what we do at the organization um, sometimes it could be a simple and incentive as dinner. Sometimes it could be, you know, a t shirt it could be, you know, a reimbursement for travel expenses. It comes in all shapes and sizes on doesn’t have to be monumental mean t shirt or just expense reimbursement. People are moved by small, by small offerings, they’re moved by small offerings, and i would even say, it’s not i wouldn’t even say that that’s what sort of pushing them over the edge? I think i think people want to share their story, they think it apparently there is a need to share in some people, and we are just tapping into that and sort of pushing it along a little bit just wouldn’t even say that the incentive is what makes or breaks the desire to share that desire is built into some people, they find it empowering, and when you give them a knave anew, that feels comfortable, whether it’s the incentive that makes them feel comfortable, the environment you set up in the office that makes him feel comfortable, you know, personal phone call that you might make to encourage them to come in and share their story that’s the little those of the little things that help push them over the edge and make them feel even more comfortable sharing there’s a very touching video done by a woman named brenda. And she tells the story of ya l who ended up not surviving her cancer, but the video is really it’s very, very moving. Do you want to say a little about that? Yeah, that’s a video that we produced for our tenth anniversary way wanted to share the stories of families that had established major gift in support of star shoretz programming on, we wanted really to understand what it was that compelled them to give and the reason we wanted to understand that was we wanted to be able to share their stories with other family members and friends who might also be considering larger gift. Um, and we felt that that would be the easiest way to translate their own desires to the actual gift itself. And so we highlighted for families. Although i should say before we narrowed down to four families, we started with six or seven potential stories and then narrowed it down to the four that we wanted teo highlight on the video on dit was we really didn’t know what to expect. You know, the cameras followed these families around for a few hours in a given sunday and really just have them share what compelled them to give and establish their major defeat. And the stories are beautiful, you know, each one different you no one was story. The one that you mentioned about a young woman who was connected to another pierce a porter. Shall we have just about a minute before break? No it’s so good to tell the story of brenda and yell. So it was a young woman who was connected to another pierce supporter and the peer supporter passed away and our you know, our young caller wanted to establish a gift in her memory to make sure that others living with advanced breast cancer had a place to turn on. You know, the story came out beautifully. It’s touching it is compelling. And it also incentivizes others who are thinking about a major gift. We’re gonna take a break. And what you call your members explain that sure are pierce supporters we call links as though they were linked in a jane and it’s actually come full circle because when i was diagnosed with breast cancer a second time, i started to use the services that we created as an organization. And so i was the first link, and then ultimately now depend on some on another links in our chain. The chain is miles long now, right? Yeah. Stands the country were in all of the state. So you had a very successful written blogged post because we’re talking about righting versus video. But your your birthday block post did did very well. Got a lot of comments. Brought attention to shar. Share it once you share that. Sure. So my fortieth birthday was a couple of weeks ago and celebration of happy. Thank you in celebration of my birthday, i wrote a block post about the significance of turning forty and all that had changed in the breast cancer arena since i was diagnosed at twenty eight and i specifically highlighted and shared another story, the story of my grandmother, who had also been diagnosed with breast cancer when i was younger and how much the breast cancer story had changed in the eleven years since my diagnosis. And we were amazed at the response, we posted it as a birthday wish, and then we asked our readers and our stakeholders teoh right, a birthday wish back to me and we i think we had over one hundred responses, we shared it in in many modality, so it was on facebook it was on our block. We tweeted about it, we sent it out by email, we really blasted it on. The response is beautiful and in fact the staff as a gift to me collected all of the responses and put them together as, ah birthday book and it was beautiful and encourage people to share their own stories. They talked about their own grandmothers who had been diagnosed with breast cancer they shared some of their own stories, and again, these will be the seeds for further storytelling. We will be able to look back at all of these responses and pick from them others who might be interested in sharing their stories and greater and greater kapin more incentive again, as we talked about, i see stories everywhere. You know, that movie i see dead people. I see stories. I see stories everywhere. It just went on a hundred mile bike ride with a boardmember on. I said to her at the end of the ride said, linda, you should share your story on the block like writing something, and she did right away and again, we sent it out to all the riders. Everybody who had been on the ride. There’s, you know, really, everything we do there is an opportunity for someone to share their story. It might be why they participated in an event that might be what they learned at a given event. It might be, you know, a reflection at a milestone there’s always the potential to turn something that seems programmatic into something that elicit emotion through storytelling. That’s. Excellent. And how do you feel that? All this story telling is helping shark share it well, you touched on it a little before the break. We really used the stories in many different ways, we use him for programmatic purposes. So for example, we anecdotally they provide feedback to us on the program that we provide, and perhaps programs that we need to provide that we need to develop. We have them in marketing materials like brochures and newsletters, we use them in fund-raising efforts, whether it’s a thank you letter to donors or video that we’re producing for major givers on, we really try to find lots of different ways to use the same story or different stories to engage our diverse audience. What kinds of reactions do you get to the stories? You know, i think we keep the story israel, which makes the stories even more compelling. You know, stakeholders these days are very sophisticated, so they didn’t know when you’re trying to target their heartstrings. But when the emotion is wrong, when the story israel on when people can relate to it, i think we find any way that the response is is is great it’s certainly more effective than just shooting? Statistics in a brochure or, you know, highlighting accomplishment. It gives a face and a voice to the experience that we are addressing. How do you have? Yeah, yeah, please. Go ahead. Finish your thought. Okay, but how do you help the storytellers overcome their fear of you said people really want to do it, but suppose they have this fear, or maybe maybe even while they’re in the midst of story writing of writing or being interviewed or telling their story right in the middle of it, how do you help them overcome these fears? Well, i think the most important thing that we dio way provide a safe space for the storytelling. You know, people might be very excited about sharing their story in a, you know, at the at the onset. But once they start to tell it, once they start to share it, it becomes very personal, very raw. They start to hesitate. So we try to set up a safe space throughout the process. So first will guarantee that we will share whatever edited version of their story with them before it goes public. We guarantee we highlight for them very specifically. Where that story will appear it will be in the newsletter. It will appear on the web. It will. We might use it for a brochure. And so they have a very confident understanding of what’s going to happen with that story. That being said, you know, we still went in sometimes two challenges that we have to address on the fly. I’ll give you a specific example. This is not a verbal story, but a picture story. We did a picture. A picture exhibit of rochelle. I’m sorry. We have just about a minute left. Okay, so we did a picture display of ten of our women and one of the women who was very comfortable when she took her photograph ultimately started to hesitate. And so we have to narrow down where we were going to use that photo. So i think keeping the safe space safe, ensuring and basically ensuring that you are going to communicate with the storyteller helped them feel more comfortable sharing their story. It’s really it’s all very compelling and touching. And i want to thank you very much for sharing all this valuable information and also your own story with our listeners. Rochelle thank you. Welcome back to big non-profit ideas for the other ninety five percent on tony martignetti non-profit radio where else you’re going to hear those kinds of ideas? Nowhere. Michael o’brien is my guest. He is the founder and principal of mob advocacy, a multi state government relations firm that focuses on helping small businesses and non-profits manage legislative and regulatory processes, he has over ten years of experience managing state and local government relations and political programmes. Michael has launched many national grassroots advocacy campaigns that have impacted legislation and policy at both the state and federal levels. Michael brian, welcome to the show. Thank you. Good afternoon, it’s. A good afternoon to you. I’m glad you’re with us. Well, let’s, let’s define grassroots advocacy. So we know everybody’s starting in the same place. Sure. I define grassroots advocacy as engaging regular people that the typical constituent in order to impact public policy or public opinion. Okay, go ahead. Is there more, uh, just to say that it varies from what’s considered direct lobbying, which is ah lot more heavily regulated and requires, uh, registration process with either the state federal or local government. Right. Okay. But it goes it. Could be that, but we’re going. We’re going to talk about the doing it. The grassroots with the with the average joe, the average right and the average jane. Also, jane is welcome to participate as well. Um all right. How does this, uh, grassroots advocacy? How can it help? Small charities? I think there’s three ways that, uh, grassroot dad? Because he helped out small charities. One, uh, i think grassroots advocacy is often essential to organizational missions. Uh, it’s. Hard to think of. Ah, oven issue out there. That’s not impacted by local, state or federal legislation or regulatory process. Uh, so it’s important for your organization to be involved. Second, it’s. A great way to engage volunteers and donors. Small amount profits are asking people to give money. Um, you know, off all the time, you know, four, five times a year in order to be successful. That has to be part of the process. But it is important to provide some different different ways for volunteers to get involved in different ways for them to have an impact other than giving money. And this is a great way to be okay. And this actually i know. You have another way, but this actually could lead to someone becoming a donor so they might come to your cause and sign a petition or do things that we’re going to talk about and then become a donor down the road absolutely small, small, just like small donors become big donors, small advocates become big donors and, you know, those top advocate said that organization’s looking for ok and even you know, that could become small donors because then small donors have become big donors, has become big donor it’s all part of a spectrum? Absolutely. Then big donors could continue to become grassroots advocates, but they wouldn’t go back to being small donors way. Hope not. No, no, that wouldn’t happen. Okay, and then what’s the other. What else is this important? The third way. It’s. A great way to find new supporters. Er, you know, for for volunteers, donors even those on the on the, uh whose responsibilities include fund-raising it’s sometimes hard to ask somebody who’s brand new to an organization to get money but it’s easy to say. Hey, can you spare five minutes in and send an email to your to your legislator? Can you spare five minutes and signed this petition it’s an easy ask. And once you get those people involved in your organization, you know, they have some kind of interest because they they took that step and got involved. And so it’s a good way to increase your your your database and gives opportunities to call the-whiny-donor further, i love that easy, easy entry point and then also can help new entrance introduce your cause to their friends as well, who who may very well be sympathetic. Absolutely cool. Okay, um, and so you’ve seen this make make a real change. I mean, this really can impact policy and funding in things. I mean, absolutely, i don’t i can’t think of a of a major advocacy campaign that that i’ve been involved with that didn’t have grassroots as as a key part of that, uh, lawmakers, they listened the lobbyists all day long, and they know there’s a bent out there, but when it when it hits home, when their constituents are calling in or sending emails saying, hey, you know, take a look at this that’s that’s when it really hits home, when when it’s people voting for them. Back home have an interest in it. Lawmakers take, uh, take a much closer look at the issue. They do ok, i’ve always you know, i’ve always wondered because i fill out petitions sometimes or send emails and make phone calls, and i just wondered if it really is making a difference. Sometimes you don’t get the feedback from the organization, which i maybe we’ll talk about, but that’s a downside, but but i just always wonder, you know, but you’re saying, yes, people good. What makers do? Listen, yeah, okay, okay, we have just a little less than a minute before before first break. So why don’t we just, um but you just introduce us to the idea of the way social media has helped create these grassroots campaigns to make sure that could be a whole show it and i know what you’re going, you’re going to squeeze it into thirty seconds, and then we’re gonna come back and talk about it more after a break. Ok, the internet. It has completely changed grassroot dad, because just by making making it easier one for organizations to reach their advocates and spread their message, but, uh, you know, making it far easier and cheaper for those advocates to reach out to there to there legislature, especially those in washington. I mean, if you’re in california, used to be a long distance call, uh, you have to go through the switchboard, you know, with the internet, it it’s an email on your getting directly, oftentimes, to stafford, take, who takes care of that issue. If you’re going to use an example, you have to use one from a state where we have a live listener. So, so far, we’ve identified california, north carolina and indiana, and there are others, of course. So please confine your examples to those states. No problem. All right, that was one more time. California, indiana, north carolina. Alright, let’s, continue online. I’m sure there are sites that can help charities create a grassroots campaign. Yeah. There’s. A number of different sites. Uh, both free and, uh, pay sites that okay. That help you grow and manage your grassroots campaign. Uh, let’s. Let’s. Name sametz. Talk about some free ones. Sure. Justin. Detail some great, some good free ones. Uh, there’s a a new company. Fairly new company called pot woobox, which is a a great job with federal legislator. Popped like alternative father. Right? Pio pio. Gop video right now, if you go to pot. Woobox p ot vox there’ll be marijuana legalization advocacy pot box you can you can actually find information about marijuana legalization on pop fox is well, you can. All right. Also smoke a bone box. I’m sure okay, uh, pop fox. Yes, but it is a kind of a new grassroots tool. It measures public opinion. But how many letters going in for and against an issue it free for organizations and individuals, too, to sign up and to help kind of broadcast their message to other potential supporters. Uh, and just recently, the democratic caucus in the house and the senate announced that they’re giving the sentiment feet from pop box tto help, uh, help keep there, uh, caucus informed on public opinion on different issues. Okay. So just as an example of how, how much of an impact this makes you know when when lawmakers air using that direct public opinion data, you know, you know, every letter count, just like every vote counts in elections. Every letter counts in a grassroots campaign. What else you got? That’s free. Uh, bill track fifty and some light foundation and thomas help look at legislation that organizations might be interested. In okay. Agreement that was built. Track foundation and its satellite bill. Track fifty. Bill, check fifty. Pardon me, bill. Track fifty. Fifty dot com. Yes, the sunlight foundation. Some light foundation. Okay, again. And congress dot org’s, congress dot org’s. Oh, interesting. Are they affiliated with with our united states congress it’s affiliated with cq roll call? Actually, what is that? Congressional quarterly. Real congressional quarterly. What? You’re watching? We have jargon jail in tony martignetti non-profit radio, and i will throw you in there. Especially is somebody who’s. Ah, troublemaker. Sorry about that. That that’s, uh, that’s just the name that’s. How i’ve known that this is cq on then thomas dot lock, dot gov and those air great tools to research federal and state legislation. So you can have an idea of what issues you want to take? Uh, take action on. And then, um, i don’t know what of a good free state local advocacy piece, but i know there that there are some in development, so hopefully and they in the coming months, we might have a good one coming. Okay, i’ll tell you why our audience is small and midsize charity. So we’re going to stick with the free sites. And if people want to find the pay sites, i’m sure they can do that. We’re going to stick with talking about the free ones. So let’s, stay online for a little while. What? I mean, you could you could build your own cause site, right? I mean, it’s it’s virtually cost less to put up a website. Correct? Uh, okay. And what should you be doing on that website when you put up your yurt grassroots cause site of the top things you know, make sure your issue is defined in ways that the everyday voter or everyday legislature legislator can understand. Uh, people want to think that our elected officials know a lot about every issue. Uh, that’s just simply not true. They don’t have the time, uh, or the capacity to know everything about your issue. So keep the language simple. Umm, you know, make sure it’s in terms that that an everyday person can understand. Ok, i try to use my grandmother tests. You know, my grandmother can understand it that i’m doing the right thing. Okay? I’m going to stay away from that. I like grandmothers. I don’t have mine with me, but i’m just going to let that go. Listeners may be disappointed, but you can come up with your own retort to michael’s. Grandfather, grandmother, test on why it’s a grandmother test? Not a grandfather test. Okay, what else? What? We should be capturing emails. I’m sure. Right. What else should be doing on this site? Yes, a way for people to sign up for your information. Uh, and, you know, a simple email collection or ah, form where they can add in additional information so you can match them, uh, with their legislator, uh, is important depending on the size of your advocacy campaign. Uh, e mails could be fine. You know, you might want that additional form information. It doesn’t take that much longer for somebody that fill it out. I don’t think it’s a huge deterrent out there, okay. And, you know, third, uh, you know, provide opportunities for your supporters to spread the word. You know what? Twitter with linked in with facebook, you know, just having the send this to three of your friends, you know, using using social media and and that, uh, you know, social media to help grow your your grassroots campaign, those are the three essential pieces, okay? And i see i see that often when i’m asked to sign something on dh then i do it, then i get something back it’s usually from move on dot or ge i get something back saying thank you. Now, please share this and they have buttons to share it on twitter, sharing on facebook, et cetera. Right then, then, validation process and, uh, you know, i know a lot of fund-raising cos there now, you know, kind of using that validation process as well, you know? But, you know, the validation process really helps grow your grassroots process, the validation process being what? Thank you that i’m referring to the they having tony send is sending no doubt, teo friends saying, hey, you know, i support this i believe in this, you know, take a look at it. You know that validation is is key to growing your your your grassroot that base. Okay, okay. Now, if you so if you fertilize your grassroots on dh use lots of, i guess use lots of weed, b gon and adequate fertiliser. Then the grass is going to grow. And you can have these things called grass tops, what are grass tops, grass tops or the kind of the super advocates? So there there’s two categories that i put people in the people who are who are the most passionate, most vocal on your on your issue? Uh, they’re the people who answer every email respond are contacting their legislature legislator hyre uh, they’re important because they’re out there, they’re promoting and and you want to keep an eye on them because you don’t want them to over promoting, go overboard. You want him to stay on message. But, you know, the passion is there. They’re easy to motivate. Yes. The second is the grassroot supporter who’s who’s connected, who lives down the street from their state legislator. Uh, who’s. You know, brother, in law’s, the mayor, you know, those people who have who have personal connections to legislators and the’s air the grass tops the’s the grass tops these these are the grass tops. So you have your passionate, passionate, always their advocates. Then you have the people, uh, who have some real access that your general, uh, general constituents don’t have. Okay, when you marry those two and put them out there, you have a very powerful combination hyre that can hit people in ways that your traditional grassroots doesn’t always said you might not hit the right legislator every time with your grassroots database, but with your grass tops, you might be ableto sneak peek in somewhere where you didn’t necessarily have access reached before. All right? Welcome, michael. How do we engage these grass tops differently than we do the grassroots? Uh, well, first of all, they just like, just like your major donors, they do take a little extra cultivation. Um, you have to do that. Prospect research on your grassroots database? Yeah. People don’t always think about it. You know the process. To cultivate a grassroots said forget is exactly the same as the process to cultivate a funder and a major donor. You got to do the prospect research. You gotta do your homework. It’s you know, it’s it’s not always easy, you know, sometimes it starts by you catch an address or you’ll catch a name. And, you know, i wonder if this person knows and, you know, you connect some of the dots, uh, and it takes, you know, the government relations person of the grassroots person or even the executive director reaching out. Say, hey, you know, i saw that you have an interest on this issue. Can i talk to you about it? And, you know, you you start that discussion process and find out, you know, how interested are they? How connected are they? Um and then, you know, just like with the major donor, you know, you make that ask, hey, can you help us? You know, beyond just that five minute weather and oftentimes, if if, if they’re connected and already have an interest in your organization, you know that it’s still an easier asked that then asking for money? Oftentimes i’m going anyway. How about getting other groups involved with you to help you? Other charities? Perhaps? Sure. Coalition work, i think is is important. Individual charity’s only have so many, so many people on the database lists, they only have so many reach, whether you know, whether that numbers, whether geographic area, you know, whether that’s, you know, pinned down by the the, uh, the scope of the mission reaching out to other organizations who do similar work or, you know, maybe completely different work, uh, but still having an interest in the end outcome of of your issue, and i want to make the point that those coalition partners could even be corporate, right? Absolutely. I just think that something really interesting at a local station here where banks had allied with charities because they both had an interesting in preventing hydraulic fracturing that process of releasing gas from the from the crust in shale of the earth because the banks lose mortgage revenue when property values decline, and that happens around hydraulic fracking sites. So so companies had allied with charities. It certainly does. And, you know, even even when they when corporations don’t have a a personal stake, there’s a lot of a lot of corporate responsibility out there. Ah, latto corporations are getting involved in their communities and, you know, when you get those corporations involved, they can help fund from of that grassroots advocacy work and help you no help with the promotion. And, you know, grassroots advocacy is is a generally a low cost, um, product, but, you know, every every little bit is a resource drain on a small non-profit so corporate partners out there can can help with that funding on help, you know, help raise resource is help, you know, provide validation. You do all of those things? Yeah, all right, so just the fact that it doesn’t have to be another non-profit could be corporate, i imagine now, a little quickly because we only have a few minutes left their sights that could help you find coalition partners. Um, you know yes, yes, you know, pop box will will list organizations that are supporting, supporting or opposing, uh, legislation and certainly that’s. A key indicator. You find legislation that you’re interested in, you can look at supporters and the opposition. Okay, pick your side and you pick your team, so to speak. Uh, are there other sites? Uh, you know, not that i know. Okay, i think congress dot orden might, but i’m not. I’m not okay, but and then you could also use too traditional social media, right? Linked in facebook searches? Absolutely. The traditional social media. Uh, find out who is talking about your issue. Um, you know, it’s it’s much easier to research issue advocacy. Now that never given, given the amount people are talking about and the interest in it. Michael, what is it about this work that really moves you? And why do you why do you love this? You know, it, uh, i had always wanted to work, uh, with the non profit in the nonprofit sector. Uh, you know, i think part of it was growing up in a strong catholic family coming back. I always wanted to give back, um, but i also had a passion for advocacy and and politics and government and, you know, helping non-profits to make the impact is is really what drives me. You know, i’ve worked worked for and with several non-profit organizations, you know, doing health care, social justice, education on dh loved it every day. You know i often i feel you know, it’s been a long time since since i’ve actually worked. Uh, you know, i just love my work so much, you know, it’s like i don’t even have a real job. Scott koegler of course, our regular tech contributor and the editor of non-profit technology news, which you will find that end p tech news dot com and this month we’re talking about devices, scott there’s, tablets, there’s, laptops, desktops, handhelds how do we figure out what the heck is good for us? Yeah, kind of never ending, isn’t it? They used to be a pretty straight decision between desktops and laptops and that for real work. Those air still kind of the main options. But today, you know, you get, uh, tablets and bones everywhere from three and a half inches, ten point one inches on size, and pretty much they’ll do all the same thing. But also pretty much all that same thing is is usually less then, you know, real work. Another one generally don’t have keyboards and those kind of things so let’s kind of segment into those two categories. First foryou, portable before you, scott. Before you do that, i want to point out we know that you are the tech contributor because you don’t just say screen size up to ten inches. You say up to ten point one that extra tenth of an inch makes a difference. We gotta be precise. This is technology was the record demands precision. And scott is the man who delivers it. Okay, i’m sorry. That’s. Any inane interruption? Go ahead. That’s. Right. Um, so again, in the form of unity passes on the kind of work i need to do obviously gonna be sitting in the office. You can use either. And that that decision based you haven’t called back. Scott scott scott, stop for a minute. I’ll tell you what, you’re cutting out kind of badly. There he is. Okay, yeah, i’d rather talk to scott than admonish my mother. I’ll do that over the weekend. Okay, you’re going to break down our devices for us into two categories? I believe right. Let’s start with just desktop laptop as one category. And having said that, both of those generally well, i think, almost always have keyboards and keyboard is really key to the kind of things that people generally call work in an office or latto build it, you know, involves writing text using the keyboard for american trees and things like that and those air really much more suited to that kind of work than our tablets and cell phones and those kind of things. So the soft virtual keyboards that appear on tablets and phones were pretty well, but if you really need to get a lot done, you’re better off just having a keyboard on your hands. Uh, just, you know, more accurate. Better sure, sure. So it really depends on what you’re what you’re you’re functions are what you were like. What your goals. Are for the hardware, right? Exactly. Exactly. So let’s, just talk about the difference in key in, uh, laptops and desktops. One of the key difference of differences. There is the price. So the best tops are generally less expensive than laptops for a similar amount of power. Just because all the miniaturization that is required to make a laptop cost extra money. Okay, i was wondered why the bigger one is less generally. Yeah. Okay. Yeah, yeah, because, you know, they don’t care about the size. They’re just, you know, stuff all this stuff and then stick it on the floor. So, uh, so that’s kind of one way to do that. So if you got b b funds and you don’t need the larger screen that’s also available generally with a desktop, then you might want to opt for laptop because obviously it’s it’s portable, and you can take it with you. If you’re not always working at your desk, you can move it. Otherwise other places taken home, take it on a on an event or something like that. So there’s a difference there, of course. Sure. Um what what else? Well, what about software availability? Well, software is always a key and a lot of software, especially non-profit kind of things are going to run on generally windows windows operating systems, so that may even exclude using a mad uh, you need to really check your your software course. If you’re using a cloud based application, then you, khun pretty much use any kind of operating system doesn’t matter whether it’s windows or or mac or even it’s kind of lennox operating system very well. You make a very good point about what what platforms are supported by funk by applications that are important to you, there’s one that i using planned giving that does not support the apple os. So i have to have a programme called parallels on my apple computer to run windows just for that one program, but it is essential, right? Right, see that sometimes will dictate what you’ve done, and of course, once you’ve done that, not only have you spent more of your apple computer, but you spent more for the parallels, right? Exactly. So now you you know you really enough there, so you really need to decide what’s most important to you, and i kind of touched. On one of the reasons for getting a laptop and that is the portability, and so now we start to talk about, okay, what kind of jobs are you going to use that require portability? Uh, one that i think i said was that he’s going to an event on a laptop is good if you’re going to have a table inside you, but if you’re going to be wandering around the event and you want to interact with people, take pictures, maybe dio email sign ups for your newsletters, those kind of things, uh, a tablet is probably the perfect device for that kind of thing, a smartphone, probably a little bit less than perfect, although you can certainly do those things, but again, you get smaller keyboard, you know much a little bit more difficult to use quickly, okay? And there’s so many tablets out there. Besides, the ipad is the google nexus and the microsoft surface. Samsung has one, i think the galaxy i mean there’s so many tablets, yeah, there’s a huge variety, in fact, buy-in while apples still dominates with the ipad, i just survey that the android operating system, which is what’s used in pretty much every town would accept apple and been in windows tablet, so andrew, it is outselling apple on a poor unit basis, so it just kind of interesting. Yeah, yeah. So i know it doesn’t say if any better or worse generally means it’s less expensive devices, they’re less expensive. Okay, um, but at the same time, i’ve heard from a lot of people that it’s the application that counts, you know, if you can get to the internet and you can access the functions that you need, it really doesn’t matter so dahna look at your budget, see what it is that you need those the system that you’re looking at, support the function you need and within your budget, and then go ahead and buy it, you know, they pretty much all work okay and the features on not necessarily just sticking with tablets, but just across all of them. I was looking i was when i was researching our segment on dh i actually do research, i know it doesn’t sound like it, but actually do research for the show and prepare the show. I found something the iphone headphones, you know, the white headphones that you get, and they have a little tiny panel on them built into the built into the wire and there’s ten i found a site that there are an article had ten different things that you could do with that little with that little panel like you could if you tap the middle of it two times that’s to pick up a phone call, for instance, or, like, tap it once and that’ll put a put a phone call through tio to voicemail. When you’re getting if you’re getting a call while you’re listening in to skip a song, you do a triple tap or what? It’s incredible just on this tiny little skinny panel the features on that are available, right there’s? One more hidden one if you stand on your head and you stick it dunaj it’ll actually call your mother, okay? I don’t really appreciate sarcasm on this show. I play things pretty straight pretty close to the vest. Now. Watch, watch. You know, sarcasm is a very dangerous thing. Uh, but you know that point there’s there are many features on many systems, computers and even software, and the rule of thumb is eighty twenty just like, you know, all the eighty twenty rules where eighty percent of the people used twenty percent of the function, yeah, just like you have an iphone, right? I do have that i do, and you’d never do those things. No, i didn’t know that i could ignore it incoming call, buy long pressing the center button twice or so you know, i just i just usually hang up on it, but, you know, you could do that. Yes, i’ve noticed, okay, so what? We’re going to take a break. All right, now, all these features and all there’s a pact with the stuff that most people don’t use, you have to you have to wonder about what your employees are capable of learning. Well, exactly. And and how much do you want them to learn? How much extra time do you want to put in on finding out things that they may never use? Uh, there’s a big difference between buying a computer to operate your business and one for your personal life. I generally try to minimize the expense and the feature set of business computers because typically, you know, i’ve been unemployed. I need them to do three things. Four, maybe five, generally, not twenty. And if i say i’m buying something for myself on much more liberal in terms of the kinds of features and even the amount of money that i’m gonna want to spend interesting that’s an important distinction. Yeah, you don’t want to be thinking about you don’t want to be making that crossover. Yeah, this is this is for other people to be using to be efficient in your business exactly, and also in terms of employees abilities there, maybe training costs, but actually be hard costs not only in time, but but if, if the saw if the hardware is very different, i mean, you could end up having to pay somebody like the network it altogether, and then to train employees to operate the network and then as well as operate the devices exactly you want to make. It is standardized, as you can within the organization, so that one person could get up and walk in, walk to another computer and do the same job and not have to relearn. You know where the tabs on where the keyboard durney that’s one of the things that happens between pieces and max, although it’s it’s less it’s less of an issue anymore. But, you know, the key and the maki kind of get confusing sometimes for people that try to make that transition, even though the actual applications may run exactly the thing. Yeah, yeah, i see that because my my office computing, his apple and all my clients use windows and i do a lot of work in my client’s offices, right. So i have special challenges anyway. But talk about that’s different show. Okay, there are you have some ideas for sites where we can find reviews. I love reading user reviews. I love that that the web enables that. Well, there’s two things that i would recommend one is just a scene at dot com, which is not really user reviews, but they are there. I’m not going to say that professionally generated reviews, they’re actually automatically generated reviews, so they’re standardized. How they do that automatically is a whole other topic. Fascinating. I used i used that scene. That site, those air not well, there you are, right. I knew they weren’t user reviews, but there isn’t a live person writing these things. Generally, not somebody looks at, um uh, really? Uh, yeah, they are actually generated by automated system. Okay, they pull your pretty well, um, i’m not sure right now they do a good job, but the other is just, uh, just do a search online for a review of this type in review. And then in the name of the product that you’re looking for. And course, the good part about that is that you will get a just a huge list of possible reviews. The bad part is that, uh, most of them will be completely bogus and badly written. You never really know. Yeah, right now does, like amazon dot com. And you could you could go to amazon and read reviews, but not necessarily buy the product from amazon. Do that. Do you know if they do, you have to be legitimate user to review a product on amazon. Do you know you have to? You have to register on amazon, but you don’t actually have to have purchased the product. Okay, so that kind of, you know, in-kind negates some of the reliability hoexter tenses suggest that the credibility is not as high as it ought to be. Okay, right. Okay. But there are lots of consider. Well, there’s consumer reports. Yes. Yes. There are some, uh, some reliable reporting, you know, agencies, they used to be quite a quite a few more. In fact, i used to do computer and software reviews. Yeah, when i was doing, you know, muchmore freelance writing. Um, but, uh, those reviews have have gone away in favor of user reviews, you know? Personally, i don’t think they’re quite reliable is my own my own wonderful ladies? Yeah, well, i can tell you and there’s probably a reason you’re not in that business any longer. Exactly. Yeah. All right. But now, you know, consumer reports, i subscribe to them for a year. I think i think it’s thirty dollars for a year and you can access all their online. Not not to the written subscription, but for the online. I mean, i go to them when i’m going to spend, i don’t know, like more than a couple hundred dollars on something i go to consumer reports their objective. They don’t have advertising. They don’t take advertising dollars. Yeah, so all right. We have just another minute. A half or so before break before we wrap up. Scott, what else do you want? What else did i keep you from saying? I think really the most important issue is, you know, people always asked, you know, help me buy a computer and i pretty much always start out with what’s your budget. Because it’s pretty easy to start looking. And then, you know, feature creep sets in and know what’s another fifty dollars. Here, what’s another hundred years there, and all of a sudden, you know that six hundred dollars desktop computer that would actually do a wonderful job for you terms into a you know, fifteen hundred dollar laptop with, you know who knows what kinds of extra features agree. Okay, same thing is renovating. Same thing is renovating your bathroom. Your kitchen? Yes. Yes, exactly. Don’t you don’t need the stainless steel pulls on the kitchen drawers. When? Very happy to have karen bradunas with me, she’s, a human resources consultant working with organizations to develop or change the people aspect of their business. She has over twenty years experience in hr and best practice knowledge of how to attract, retain and motivate staff. She’s held officer positions at gulf insurance subsidiary of travelers and bankers trust, which is now deutschebank. Her philosophy is to bring that large company expertise and those best practices to smaller organizations, including non-profits. Welcome. Hi, tony. How are you? All right. Well, good to have you back. Great to be here. There’s stuff. Looking in hr offices or maybe not even offices. If there isn’t an hr director but in hr closets. That’s. Ah, that could come out. Tio bite some people. Yeah, and and right now is a great time to look at that. The department of labor has announced that in new york that they have put a lot of money in hiring compliance officers to come and to look at businesses to see where they’re out of compliance into levy fines. So if you haven’t looked at what you’re doing now would be a great time to do that. Okay, that’s so that’s for new york are new york audience there’s, more investigators in the state department of labor, right? But irrespective of which state you’re in it’s a good time to do it. At some point, everyone is looking at saving money across the nation, and new york may be leading the way for other states to do this, and i suspect that they are it’s been published for probably a year now that there’s money being put into it. I haven’t had any clients go through the audit yet, but i have attended department of labor seminars that were given free tow organizations saying we’ll help you get in compliance. Let’s do it now, ok? And even aside from the state, whichever state you’re in there’s always a chance of some kind of federal audit, we’ll talk a little about, like e t o see, for instance, right equal employment opportunity council okay. But myself in jail. E o c is equal employment opportunity commission commission. Okay, i’m out of georgia. Thank you, but h r was right. Fourth, you’re treading. You have even said it yet. But hr it’s like accounting. Very, very jorgen, look, dragon e so mary-jo i have the keys for george in jail and it’s very much top of mind for me. So watch your step. But how come this stuff doesn’t get attention? That it should from from boards from executive directors, ceos buy-in up until now, i don’t know that it’s been looked at carefully, especially non-profits in corporate environments it’s taken very seriously. Let me give an example that that’s across this the nation and that’s my nines, i nine is a form that must be completed for employees. That tells that they have to prove two things. One is they’re eligible to work in this country. And they are who they say they are. And that has to be completed within thirty six hours of someone being hired. Okay, so this is if you’re hiring, if you have, as an employee, someone who’s, a resident of a different country, and they’re here anyone zoho anyone, anyone, anyone? If you hire a temp worker that works for a week, they need to fill out an i nine form so their u s resident doesn’t matter what you have to prove it. And that form i recommend be kept separately from the other paperwork in the hr file. And the reason for that is, if you have an i nine audit, you wanna have on ly on ly show the auditor by night. Okay? We’re going to talk about what to do if you’re actually audited what it sounds like your advice is just give them what they’re looking for and just what they’re looking for, a volunteer, a lot of extra stuff, but but how come this doesn’t get the attention that it deserves in you? Said maurine non-profits you found then on the end, on the corporate side, why do you think that if i don’t think up until now? Non-profits h r has really been looked at in general hr function for smaller non-profits is handled by finance, a county people who may or may not be mostly not trained in h r and h ours really viewed as a step child, i don’t know that all non-profits especially smaller ones have made the connection that your people really are assets and really do contribute to your bottom line. I mean, that’s been an ongoing challenge ideal with with non-profits the last time you were on, we talked about attract well attracting, hiring, training, retaining and then if necessary, letting go employees. But but putting aside letting them go, you know, retaining, training, motivating we talked about that a lot, but you still don’t see that charity’s air invested in their their principal asset, their people. I think right now all employers are worried about employee engagement and for non-profit that are scrambling to keep the funds they have that’s going to be the primary focus. Understandably, you’re going to try and meet payroll, so if you have funds that’s going to be a primary source, you’re not really going to invest in training while you’re just trying to meet payroll. So i think it’s where non-profit is in terms of financial stability? Yeah, yeah. Smaller shops, of course. Yeah, but you see, on the corporate side, bigger investment in people hr is not considered, like just strictly a cost center there. No. In i’ve i’ve shared this with with individuals. In some places hr is oftentimes feared because they have a heavy hand and i don’t necessarily agree with that approach. But in some organization, hr is really an audit function, and we’ve talked about this a lot hr walks, that fine line between, you know, looking to be in management side or employees side and it’s, really an audit function. Where is what’s the right thing to do here? Yeah, and but they are treading that line between, like employees, advocate and and hr officer or office for the for the charity. Right. Okay, we’re gonna take a break. We’re here to talk about your hr audit before we get into what to do in an audit. We’re talking about your hr audit with karen bradunas on dh, by the way, her website is km bradunas dot com and that’s b r a d u n a s let’s just spend another couple moments on the this i nine so you fill out this immigration form line nine for any every employee it’s not only employees on visa or some kind of other staff, correct, okay, and temp agencies, if you are working with a temp agency to supply intermittent staff, you really should be checking with them to make sure they’re doing it and they’re keeping him on file at their location also, okay? And you said within thirty six hours of enjoyment night and then you just keep that for yourself or you send it somewhere you keep it, okay, and you keep it separate from the rest of the hr file. Okay? And the reason for this is if you were to get audited recently for client, i had department of labor call me and say, we’re investigating someone who worked at your organization, and we want to make sure that they didn’t get paid too much unemployment so we’d like you to give. Us, the following pay records. They listed it out. I said we’d also like copies of their signature. Like from an application in i nine floor. But a w two debbie for form. Okay, i didn’t give him the i nine i get. I offered them. I said, you know, the lines or separate it’s easy to give anap location before and then any of these forms direct deposit. I’m simply because if there was anything wrong in the i nine, it could then open up an investigation. Okay, even though they were only there to look at employment, they could call the person who does the i nine audits and say, hey, by the way saw place saw problem with the nine nine why don’t you come over okay, if you if you think about nationally we’re looking to gain revenue to pay for nationalized healthcare and states are having difficulty financially and you think from that standpoint and end, you understand why you’d want to just give somebody what they’re asking for you okay? I think that’s sound advice for any, any kind of audit? Just exactly give them exactly what they were asking for. But don’t be volunteering extra. Okay, not-for-profits in general, i found when an auditor asked for something and i’m talking all the way to a cfo director level if they’re a little bit inexperienced in this in corporate we’re we’re trained to do this much, much more vigorously. But if in order to says i want to audit the file, why don’t you tell me what you’re looking for? So i can make it easier for you when you come? So i’ll have all this ready for you, right? They’re happy to hear that you’re thrilled. You’re not giving them the whole file. It makes a little bit more work for you up front, but it saves in potential fees, right? Ok, if there in case they do find something right. So you often see trouble with benefit plans. I do a benefit plans let’s talk first. What is a qualified plan versus unqualified plan? A non qualified plan can be discriminatory. And let me give an example of one they used to call them. Top hat plans your ceo may have a four fifty seven plan it’s called that’s a plan that’s just for them that the board approves and is written. By an attorney that gives them x amount of dollars that thie agency pays to help for their retirement. Ah, qualified plan an example. That’s unquote that’s. An unqualified plant nonqualified on what is it? What is it that we’re qualifying for? Qualified unquote? What? Qualifying for what qualifies for tax benefits. A qualified plan like a four. One k plan you as an employee can have pre-tax money’s taken out so it qualifies you and that you’re not paying tax on some of your salary. Ok? And it gets put aside for you an investment vehicle that you aren’t paying taxes on those earnings until you take them out upon retirement. Okay, now it also means it has to cover certain number of employees the plan, and it has to be non discriminatory in design, meaning the highly comped and that’s, a very finite definition by the irs. For instance, top five percent owners. Okay, a certain amount of income family members of those high, highly comped employees. Or considered how the comp the plan hasn’t. It cannot benefit those people. Mohr than on how they come. Okay, that’s. What i mean by nondiscriminatory? Okay, so if it does these things and then it’s a qualified plan, correct. Okay, and qualified plans are comin right, but just what are one of the simplest the most common? For one case, for one there’s a money purchase plans another one defined benefit plans, which you see less of now. And a defined benefit plan is the old pension plan where an organization would put money aside for you. Based on years of service, your compensation and your age and a defined benefit plan, the agency would bear the risk of the investments because they’re guaranteeing you certain amount of money. When you retire, you don’t see many of those anymore because one people don’t stay it firms that long and to their very costly for an employer to maintain. All right, now i know listeners are on the edge of their seats, waiting for me to call you jargon call you out on jug in jail for a money purchase plan, even though you said you don’t see them too much, you said it didn’t have to defend what’s money purchase plan is a plan in which an employer puts aside a certain percentage of your pay in in in in a plan that you choose the investments for, and it can be vested over time. Ok, ok, a four o three b plan, which a lot of people have work in charities like that’s a qualified plan, some are some aren’t i had a client who had a four three b that wasn’t qualified, but it wasn’t a risa plan and they’re two separate things and okay, that’s ok, we’re going to get to we’re going. So now the four o three b is like a t i a craft is very common for three b i think a lot of people have tia cref accounts, right? But they don’t know it’s a four o three b it’s just a federal tax code designation, right? Would be right for one k for three b are all definitions of plans in the tax code, so those numbers really do have meaning. If you go to the tax code, you can have definition of plan, okay? And for listeners who want to do that, please, then i’ll expect a page dissertation on eggs on the comparison, in contrast, between four o three b and four a one k and don’t just say it’s the numbers and the letter in the parentheses after the number that’s not sufficient for three beast couldn’t be used by corporate. It wasn’t until recently, i’d say last ten years of four one case could be used by non-profits previously, they weren’t used by non-profits i see let’s talk about some of the problems that you see in these plans are either qualified or unqualified because this is your hr audit. Okay, so in the qualified plans, which is let’s, start with those because those are the ones that are the most common serve the most people i don’t want you seeing, i’d recommend one. If you have any plans, follow the qualified rules because then you’re covered. If you take the most stringent rules and apply them across the board, you’re safe, okay? Because legislation changes and so if you’re always taking the most stringent rules your set so here’s here’s something plant summary plan descriptions, there’s two parts to plans one is a plan document, which is written in legalese, and then a summary plan description, which is written in layman’s terms. The plane document has to be made available. If anyone ask for you must give them a copy of it. You can charge them up. Tio, i think twenty five cents a page for, but you must give them a cop. Anyone being an employee? Correct for the plan? Dahna kayman plan documents called. Okay. That’s, illegal lease document. Make sure you have one. Make sure that it’s up to date and you’re following what’s in the document. The summary plan description must be in layman’s terms. But make sure it matches. What? The plan. Document iss. Oh, one plan. They should both say the same thing. One does it in legal terms, you know? Does it in lay terms? Right? And that somewhere that somebody planned description, spd should be given to participants every year. If you make a plan change, it’s a good idea. You have, for some changes between nineteen, one hundred twenty days to do it. Try to do it within three months. The ninety day. Do what? Send out new summary plan description to every employee or everyone who’s in that plan. Every employee, every employee, every employee that’s eligible. Uh oh, eligible. Yeah. So the, you know, because they may not. There may be eligible, but they didn’t. Take it quick. Doesn’t matter, it’s everybody was eligible. And then, of course, if you made that change, you’d have to change your plan. Document also. Yeah. You start with the plan, document change, and then you do changes something planned description. Okay. And so you really need an attorney to do the plan document. You need an attorney. You know, sometimes you when you negotiate a plan, you’re working with investments. Tia cref, fidelity. They often times have a compliance unit. Can guide you on what needs to get done. Ah, lot of times things need board rails, board resolution to amend the plan. And that’s all that’s needed to submit to the company. Who’s preparing the document. Okay, don’t try to do this on your own as an agency. Don’t get someone who really knows about plan documents and someone planned descriptions to do it. Because if something were to go wrong, that the documents are bringing two quarter those documents, you really want it done by professional. And how can something go wrong? How are how are how is compliance overseen? This is a federal agency now that would do it or state agency for a risk. I’m department of labor’s managing those or is it claims? But let’s, talk about this. I’m in let’s say, for one k plan and i get paid every two weeks. I have money taken out of my paycheck every two weeks. Right there. Can you use this as a four o three b example? Absolutely. That’s amore common plan in two or three, maybe four. Three beat every two weeks. I get paid every two weeks. I have money coming out of my paycheck. The company isn’t wiring it to the investments. Timely. They’re wiring and only once a month. That’s a violation because there might not be enough money to cover. No, maybe. Just maybe that it may be easy for them. They want to do one wire month. Just the employer. Is that supposed to be holding the money? Correct. If it’s taken out every two weeks. It’s supposed to be wired every company every two weeks. Okay? And i don’t understand this if i’m if i’m invested in stock funds in two weeks, a stock price, khun, very greatly. So i want to buy in regularly. So i get the advantage of dollar cost averaging. Okay, well we get a little technical, but the point is the money supposed to go it’s not supposed to be held by the charity office right by the non-profit supposed to when it’s received from the employees supposed to go to the plan administrated the company, the investment vehicle, tia cref you supposed be wiring that money to tia cref? Because that should be invested with the same frequency and timely as it’s taken from an employee. Gotcha. Okay. And, of course, just again to remind listeners that tia craft is the four o three b that we’re that we’re using is the example kruckel one how about one more thing that you see in benefits plans? And then we’ll talk about what to do if you’re audited. All right, let’s talk about health and welfare plans. You’ve got a medical plan, a dental plan on go, go, go back these air also heiress. A plan. Okay, we just have time for one. One thing that you see in the health and welfare plans. New red new rig. You must handup summary plan descriptions of these plans and also have a plan document on file. I’ve not seen that in corporate. Or not-for-profits previously okay, with any regularity and health and wealth? Well, this health and welfare plans like a medical plan. You like your medical plan? Okay. Okay. Let’s, talk a little about what to do if you are audited. Do you even do you get advance notice or can they say we’re coming tomorrow, which is not much advance notice. I have not seen anyone i know for osha. Audits say sometimes just drop in, but i’ve generally gotten advanced notice is okay. What’s the first thing you do, it may be a state agency or a federal agency, right? Yeah, i’m mostly seen state agencies. Department of labor was used as an example there. Pretty regular with this, i try to get exactly what they’re looking for. You want to define the scope of the audit, okay, you want to understand what they’re trying to get its not, you know, it’s not an adversarial role. You may need to clean up some things, but you’re scared as hell. Now you terrible things that not adversarial, but you’re terrified, right? But that doesn’t mean that one it’s not fixable. And two you’d rather get some guidance with someone who can give you advice, okay? I had recently in autumn, although that advice may come with a fine or penalty may but i think that if you’re showing due diligence, it’s it’s better for you. So you wanted to find the scope of the audit, meaning you may want to call the auditors let’s say that that send this formal looking letter and right and same composition exactly what you’re looking for so that we can have it ready for you. I believe. It’s someone’s looking at hr files, recently hit someone from the state on dh. This was for a specific program. They were doing an audit, they said, send us the fires i said, i don’t send files, h r protects employees information and i know many agencies listening may not have an hr person, but if i’m working for you, i don’t necessarily want everybody knowing all the things about me in my file. So if they say, send the file way, don’t send files, what you have to come on. Yeah, they will bring the files to you are where you come to us or what? I don’t bring the files, i have them coming and i actually have them do it in in my space, where i’m sitting with them, i don’t even leave them. They can’t xerox from there, you know, if they need copies, i want to talk about that and you want to talk about the protection of those copies, right? Okay. And another piece which we haven’t touched on a lot is if you have anything in an employee’s file about medical conditions, i’m out sick today. I’m going to have surgery on thursday. Get that out of the employee file that has to be in a separate folder for hip hop separated out. And you don’t want the auditor seeing that, okay, even something as simple as out. First day i separate everything be ah, a mental condition or something. Some deep serious illness. Just a sick day that i said bring along elsewhere. I separate them all out because it’s easier. If you say anything to do with health is separate. It makes it easier. Okay, uh, we have a little more time left. What? What else? What else do we do now? The auditors are on site. They’ve complied with you. They said send. But you refused there. On site, we have just a minute left. What with some advice for the day of the audience? Well, i i went through one recently and i said, you know, what do you see in the files? You like my out the way i’ve set them up? What can you recommend and make it very interactive? Because one, you’ll get information of what other people are doing. You get a sense of best practices if if you don’t know already so it doesn’t have to be adversarial, it really can be, you know, what do we need to do to make it better? All right. My blogged from june one of the weeks in june was if you’re going to give to others, you’ve got to take time off, and i just think it’s so timely to remind you that if you haven’t taken your time off for the summer yet, you really should you’re in a non-profit that gives to others whatever that e-giving mission is, you are a giving person and to do that efficiently and also really probably more important, or at least equally as important as efficiently is to get as much joy out of your giving as you can. I believe you need to take time for yourself, and i had suggested that in june it’s now early august, please take time for yourself and do it without a cell phone and without email. Take care of yourself so that you can get the greatest pleasure out of taking care of others. And that is on my block at tony martignetti dot com that’s tony’s take two for friday, august third, two thousand twelve with me now is scott koegler he is we know who. He is he’s, the editor of non-profit technology news. Of course, he’s, our regular tech contributor, the longest running contributor on this show with me from nearly the very, very beginning, very close to the very beginning. How are you, scott? I’m good, but you know, doesn’t mean that i’m getting old teo it’s like, two years you’re your youngster? Yeah, i almost i almost said, your hamster. I know what it’s, not a hamster you’re doing about that. Well, you know, that’s, right? You’re not even a gofer. No way you’re our tech contributor. And a couple of weeks ago, on the one hundredth show, you just talk briefly about what we’re going toe flush out today, which is some analytics. So why don’t you remind people what? What we’re talking about, right? One of the questions i always had about social media is, you know, aside from doing it by yourself as a kind of a leisure time activity or in order to keep up with your friends as a corporate or an organizational function, is there any return on investment? Is there a reason to actually spend the time and money in doing this stuff for a long time i was pretty much negative on social media believing that, yeah, it’s a fun thing, and it might get get your name out there, but, you know, you really don’t want to spend much time. You don’t want to actually devote a person to do that kind of work and over the last, uh, well, i guess it’s really matured over the last year that more more recently, there have become many applications and systems that that are actually helping to prove that the maybe or not depending on your situation way, turn on investment for any efforts put into social media. So that’s a long way of saying, yeah, we may be actually able to find out how much, how much we’re spending if we’re spending the right amount and where we might actually spend more time and effort. Okay, so we can audit our social media investment and determine whether it’s paying off exactly. Okay, um, and you’re right, you meant a time and money buy-in small shops, there isn’t a lot of either one of those and so every hour that someone spends maintaining the twitter feed or the facebook page or getting videos up. On youtube or blogging, obviously is an hour that could have been spent doing something else. Andi need teo. So now we can sort of do a cost benefit and figure out what the return is and whether this time and money are well invested. One of them is is hoot suite right? Right. Who this week i had always thought that that was just i always thought that was just a desktop for, like, operating a bunch of social media platforms, but not so well, it is kind of emily talk about audits all of these applications, and we’ll talk about it. Give you some kind of ability to review the results that are that you’re getting from their efforts. Okay, but the same time, they also enable you to actually perform different tasks. So that it’s kind of ah, self fulfilling you. You do the stuff through these applications. And then you checked the results, and some of them actually allow you to determine what, what you should be doing rather than just do it and find out if it worked. Okay. Well, let’s, talk a little about hoot suite. What can you expect from that in terms? Of this determining your return on investment um, first of all, the one of the things that’s been on issue for organizations because remember, social media started that as an individual activity is, how do you how do you set up an account and then not do it all by yourself? On so with hoot suite, for instance, and with others, there’s the ability to create teams? So you have, you know, one or two or twenty people actually working on the same twitter, facebook, whatever accounts at the same time, so you don’t actually have to monitor the sight all the time and then interact with every every response. So that’s that’s probably the first thing that it allows its do. Okay, okay, um beyond that, in terms of finding out what you did, you can actually go to what they call their analytics platform and you can create reports so on these reports get pretty sophisticated, they can tell you, uh, who did what? How many responses did you get from which social media area, in other words, is twitter performing that in the facebook or google plus doing better for you? Or maybe four square if you’re in the business of being different places or if your location that wants people to visit you and the reports khun get very sophisticated looking one here, yeah, that allows you to pull in google analytics. And of course, google analytics is reporting function by itself. But you can combine all these pieces together and, uh, and find out how you doing? Okay, so what kind of, by the way, whose suite is h o t s u e dot com. Right. Ok, like, like who’d suit. But with with the at the end dot com. Eso what kinds of numbers can you see in determining these results at what you looking at there? Uh, let me get back to here. I just kind of went away from it. Oh, yeah. That’s. Terrible profile summary. For instance, who did what? What media are you connected to? In other words, i’m looking of mine here, and i’ve got, um i’ve got a twitter account. I got a facebook account. Uh, this one here, i do not have a four square or a google, plus the kinds of things you can add to it. Um, you can you can see how many? Retweets you’ve got in other words, on a daily basis, i got, you know, twelve, retweets or two thousand tweets, and that really is a kind of a quick indicator of the messages that i’m sending out popular. Are they getting traction to people like him and want to tell their friends that i said whatever said right? Because that’s that’s what a tweet is right? They found it so interesting they want people following them to see it, right and that’s really that’s a good indicator that if you get a lot of retweets, you’re doing a good job, okay? Reaching more people, what else is on that hood? Sweet report mentions by influencers, in other words, um, and we’ll talk about influence influencers here in a bit, okay, but essentially influences influencers are people that our red or recognized by other people, and they mentioned your name so it’s like, for instance, it’s like tony martignetti who is a tremendous influence. Scotty, are another hundred shows for you, okay? And then you’re cut off. All right, all right. Oh, that no, that makes sense. So and there’s there’s influencers in every area. So in non-profit. Obviously, that would be one, but in social media, you know, we’re talking about i don’t know who but other people that would mention you that have a great following and and so people pay attention to them on duitz sweet tells you who the influencers are in the in the keywords that you’re following is that that works, it tells you if they if they have mentioned you, right, what does it tells you who the influencers are, it will not say, hey, this is an influencer and you’ve got to go talk to him, but it does look at yes, if tony martignetti tweeted about scott koegler and tony martignetti is a is an influencer, then it was tony would show up on this list. Okay, okay won’t necessarily tell me that tony is an influencer and that i had to talk to him, okay, aside from having mentioned you, which i hope i do often, i’m not i’m probably on influencer. I’m chronically under connected so a nice guy, but i ain’t got no connections and the other at another trick here is key words so if you have a key word, you know what are your key words? What? Are they? What are they? And are they gaining traction? And this gives you a kind of a time or graphic about you know what? What came up and how but what i’m looking at here is justin bieber, which is probably not one that i would become my gosh, allright, let’s, throw that out. So what? How does it too fine key words? They’re the words that you use often or you have to add the two o you add you tell them what key words you want to be monitor you want who’s weak to monitor? Okay, okay, now that’s that’s just twitter so we can also look at the same things on facebook and google analytics. Maybe, you know, there are different things. For instance, in facebook there’s regions so you can say geographical, you know, before you doing is you need to keep track of by a particular area by language, by number of daily posts, very post sabat pre-tax tweets so, you know, did it catch on? It wasn’t like buy a bunch of people in this kind of thing, okay, so in facebook, the like, i guess is comparable to the retweet and twitter. And it’s a measure of somebody liking your content and whose sweet will measure that it’ll tell you what, what content was liked more often than than the rest? That’s exactly what that does is it allows you to not only know if you’re doing well, but in what areas are more popular. So if you’re if you’re tweeting a posting on a variety of topics, you can say, you know, topic a fifty percent more popular and gets recognized and retweeted and liked much more frequently than topic be well, you know, you want to talk more about top of games and stop being so that allows you to kind of hone your message and concentrate on what people like yes, i want to do excellent. You could figure out yes, right. You could test different different content, right? Yes. Okay, so now i see. All right. Now get to the true audit. You could do like a bee tests, you know, one versus the other. And then and then refine your test even further. Things like that. Excellent. Excellent about placing whose suite is free, but it’s it’s one of those freemium kind of things, you know, free. Versus premium. Yeah, and so you could get in and you can use it for no cost of all. But if you actually want to add additional folks to your group, you know other people making tweets or four actually monitoring the activity that you do need to upgrade to what they called the enterprise version and that that costs no. Okay, but if it’s one user, they can also get the analytics in the in the free version. Yes, they get some analysts can’t, for instance, skip um, google analytics incorporated in that without paying something. Okay, but everything we’ve talked about you and i’ve talked about that’s all included in the free that’s, right? If you just have one user, right? But the shot is this it’s uh, uh duitz sweet fifteen hundred dollars a month for the enterprise version. So, whoa, fifteen hundred per month per month? Yes, master that’s crazy. Oh, my gosh. All right, that’s. A significant yeah. Significant investment. Oh, my gosh. All right. Not probably outside the reach of most of our listeners, but the free version is great. Just one. If it’s just one user. Um, you know what? Good one more. Twenty wanted make before break uh, no, because next we’re gonna talk about a couple of yeah, okay, i was going to say we have to take a break in about a minute, little less tonight. Dot com let’s, talk a little about market me sweet scott what? What? What does that offer murcott me? Sweet is a little bit, uh, similar to hoot suite. We talked about price. I’m just going to kind of mention that and get it out of the way. Okay? It’s free. And they have actually one, two, three, four levels of pain participation. And it goes from nine dollars a month to ninety nine dollars and, uh, significantly less. Van theun who tweet. Okay, yeah, yeah. And it actually, it allows you to say all of those include team members and analytics, different numbers of social profile. So, really, for ten dollars a month, you can add team members on dh, actually for free. You can have two members on dad multiple profiles, which is pretty good, actually, i i’m a fan of marketing. Sweet. Yeah, well, okay, um, have you got something that is different about market lee sweet. Although it handles different networks like twitter, facebook linked, then there’s nothing. One. Thing you could do that that’s really helpful is to find out who you should be talking to and create leads from them. So francis, i could go into, um, into the lead section, and i could say, ok, and twitter, look for anybody who mentioned the word non-profits and it will scan my twitter feeds for the last day or so, and it will actually come back immediately with the with the tweets that mentioned non-profit okay, i cannot read those tweets looked for people and then add those to what i call the lead box and then i can make contact i can message them or direct message if i can add them to my to my twitter list. Uh, and i could do the same thing with facebook so beyond analytics and kind of you know what happened to what i did, it allows you to say, who should i talk to, which is really, really important. So when you’re scanning these these words that you query for its looking not only at your current followers but it’s o r people you’re following it’s looking at the whole twitter universe or what i’m looking for the whole twitter you okay? So right, so then it helps you find new people that you should be following. You might decide to follow, right? So right now, i just i have a search set up for him newsletter, so i just click that and right now i’ve got gosh, i don’t know, maybe fifty or so tweets that were done within the last day, right? Just past day, right? And i can say, you know, i could look at one and said, do you know african coaching support to help you reach your goals? Ok, so some of these are, you know, not really things that i would want to go, but i could say, for instance, this guy just, uh, i said, just sign up for newsletter my unsubscribes from days day, we lose newsletter how do i figure out howto howto re subscribe? So let’s just say i wanted to, i could click on that, i can add it to my to my leads, and i could tweet out to that person okay, okay. So it’s really effective in-kind of understanding we’re we’re in whom you should be talking with all right? Anything. I’m sorry, anything else that you like in market me sweet. Maybe some of the reports or anything. Yeah, there’s. Some reports in here, but what i really like is the ability to be proactive so there’s front you could be automatic follow backs you could do delayed posting. So not everybody’s online all the time. So you might want to people say, you know, post this message at three o’clock, right? Okay. And and market me sweet does have the analytics some analytics for doing your auditing in the free version. In the free version, you conception goals. You can sit up team reports. You know who did what and how effective were they and you can talk about you know how it has account doing overall. So, yes. Okay. You’re good analytics. Okay, we have just a little over a minute and a half left. You want to talk a little about radiant six, right r a d i n and the number six and radiant six takes what i talked about in market me sweet in terms of funny, who you should talk to and about what? And it kind of blows it out. And it’s, extremely powerful, actually. System monitors about one hundred thousand different blog’s social media and also just websites where comments you made. So not only are you looking at social media is also looking at comments that were posted on, say, you see not and protect that news yeah, and protect used dot com. You mean there you go. Thank. Okay. He has extensive experience in survey design, online surveying market research and social science research. His career has been focused around research and data analysis for the past twenty years, and i’m very pleased that his practice brings him to the show. Paul garin, welcome. Thanks, tony. Thanks for having me. It’s. A pleasure to have you how useful are surveys for small and midsize charities? You know, i think for a lot of organizations, they really provide some core informations that oftentimes people within organizations kind of our internal debates about and there’s not always great clarity with what some of assumptions are being made. And i think research with particularly donors and stakeholders, but also uses of charitable charitable services give you a lot more specific. Clary on whether your fulfilling the elements cia mission that are most critical to you and most critical tier donors. So i think in that regard, you know, this becomes critical information not only to kind of get a sense of an evaluation on how you doing now, but also if you’re involved in long. Range planning and trying to look toward the future of how you should evolve on dh. Part of what you said is you could resolve some internal differences about the way things might be going or the way things should go. So maybe some of those internal arguments can be resolved this way. Yeah. I mean, i think that’s one thing that, you know, it’s funny, because when you work with people who say what we know all this we know we know we know exactly, you know how people feel about us or you know how we’re doing, and we know what our strengths and weaknesses are, and then you start to talk to different people in the organization. You find out very different assumptions with many people. So part of part of the problem might be unwillingness toe do the survey because then you have reliable information and your opinion might end up being the wrong one. Yeah, and that becomes a challenge for us is outside consultants and how to be able to do the research that they get away that’s not biasing any particular perspective and be able to present it in a way that people understand and take, you know, internalize that taking an understanding and continue to to think about things because we were we don’t have an agenda, we want to get to what what reality is and i think that’s one benefit of sometimes of having another group that’s outside your own organization do the research because you don’t have a kind of bias voice, right? That objectivity just you have to be willing to recognize that your side of the argument might be the loser exactly and, you know, like with everything we try, destruction is not, you know, presented that there’s winners and losers, but there are certainly times when you come down on a certain side and things are unambiguous when you, when you survey people and, you know, eighty percent say they don’t they don’t think you’re doing a very good job of this particular element of of your portfolio of services that you know, that that’s meaningful, that that’s pretty undebatable and one of the survey questions that we ask and i want to thank you for designing our first professional survey. Thank you very much. It’s usually it’s usually the hack job that i do, thank you thank you for for lending your services to the to the survey before the show, and one of the questions we asked is how satisfied are your key donors and stakeholders with the performance of your organization? Currently and three, two thirds said either very satisfied or somewhat satisfied. But then roughly one third, about twenty nine percent said i’m not sure, so they’re not there there’s some uncertainty there about what their donors and stakeholders think about how they’re doing. Yeah, and i think that’s, you know, that’s where we you know, where we come down in terms of how important this is, if, you know, a third of people really don’t have a good sense of that, you know, how do you move forward and know that the measures you’re taking the programs you’re supporting, the way you’re administering it all the way you’re going out and trying to get external support for our right and are going to be solid going forward? It’s certainly difficult to know if you don’t have some kind of reed and even the kind of very, very southside, somewhat satisfied, you know, that kind of comparison, although i think when you just research you find most people are somewhat or very satisfied, but, you know, is the bigger bucket very satisfied? Because those are the passionate people, supporters, those of the people that, you know, i really going to stand by you in the long term, somewhat somewhat satisfied, you know, they’re going to be the kind of people that i got more loosely affiliated affiliate in terms of long term, long term support. So you know, those those ki kind of things we bring to the table and be able to kind of say, you know, hey, yeah, eighty percent of your people your donors or somewhat are very satisfied, but, you know, only thirty percent of very satisfied and that you want to see flip, you want more people that kind of passionate what’s called top box, okay, right, i got you so yeah, so so don’t be so satisfied with somewhat satisfied, exactly what’s outside it is you’re doing fine, but in a world where, you know, people have a variety of different ways where they could distribute this support and all, i’m sure deserving causes, you know, being in a somewhat satisfied bucket doesn’t really distinguish you. Got, you’re ok, and in our survey was about forty three percent were eyes felt that their donorsearch stakeholders were very satisfied, there’s about twenty nine percent somewhat satisfied we have just about a minute before break, you can also be surveying people outside your donors and stakeholders, right? Amore amore, broader audience, maybe just your community? Yeah, absolutely. I mean, i think, whether it be local community, if you can, a local organization or we’ve done work for international organizations that we’ve done national studies forward to get kind of general population awareness. So for example, if you’re, you know, organizations say your aa group focused to its animal protection there’s a lot of those kind of groups out there, you know, where do you fall in terms of visibility compared to those other organizations? And what could you do to perhaps increase that? Where do you need to? Kind of kind of do your messaging? You know, what were the vehicles for communication and also one of the important messages that you need to get out there you can connect with? Ah, wider population. That may be more supportive of your group when there’s other competition. Come on. I hate to say competition, but not-for-profits. But obviously there’s people in the same space, all doing great work and believing in the organizations you know, that want support. We’ll take a break. Paul. Paul here is going to stay with us. The ladies said it for me, so i don’t have to say big non-profit ideas for the other ninety five percent. Paul, we were just talking about maybe surveying beyond your immediate donors and other stakeholders. But when you, when you do survey dahna people who are committed to you, it sounds like i mean, there could be some value around helping you to focus your mission in your core. Yeah. No, i think when you, when you talk about people that are closest to you, there’d be a core donors or donors in general or other stakeholders like, you know, people in the legislator that might legislative that might be supportive of you. You know, other advocates in the area that the different kinds of stakeholders beyond just a donor base, too. Yeah, but i think that’s where, you know, you really get a sense of people that know you well that care about the cause that are a little bit more discerning. And even the research you might be able to split those people out to where your core people, who were the people that know you best and who are kind of people providing regular donations cubine may not be tracking his services in consul here’s the core people were, and i’ve done that kind of research before. We’ve is it? Okay, here’s, the stakeholders that really know you well, what do they think of you? What does the kind of broader base of support think ofyou and kind of look at that? But i think that’s where you really get are we on our mission? Are we feeling the promises that we were making to the community that we’re serving into the people that supported think that if if they don’t, then you’re in real trouble? So if you find out that you they think you’re kind of falling short on a couple critical pieces of your mission, well, it’s, time to reflect and see is that a statement of messaging in information? Or is it truly a deficit in the services you’re providing? This could also be valuable in doing strategic planning. I mean that’s basically everything you’re saying could could contribute to a strategic planning process. Absolutely, because i mean that that’s the element we’re dahna only checking on how you’ve been doing, but what are the existing are you keeping up taste with the existing needs of the community, the population just serving so you may have done a very good job continue to do the job in your basic mission, but are there new challenges in us space that air coming up that maybe you’re not keeping apace with fast enough that, you know, for five years down the road, you that’s going to be the critical area that they would like you to see serving? So, you know, it’s a matter of how we doing now, but, you know, looking forward, one of the critical issues moving forward that maybe, you know, obviously you just think about the last he isn’t changing economic landscape suddenly the needs of people and in the nation at large, in the world at large have changed quite a bit, so you can imagine tryingto strategic plan five years ago when everybody the economy was hail and going full steam and and how that changed so dramatically and how you might need to change your kind of perspective and outlook long term as an organization, if you’re gonna serve people that now might be having additional challenges that didn’t. Exist a few years ago. What about just surveying aboard? I mean, could you use this as a way to anonymously gather opinions of just your board members? Absolutely, you know, always tricky because, ah, few key comments on they reveal their name, but that’s kind of one thing that again sometimes using outside organizations helpful because we can kind of get that and not only kind of, you know, clean the data such that, you know, we present things back to people so we can be sure indemnity, but also kind of educate, like, how do you use this information? But absolutely, we’ve done that kind ofthing, not boards employee research is are the people in your organization believing that you are on on on the beam with what your mission is with what your services? And sometimes we done both rose, since we’ll survey kind of outside populations donor, and then inside populations are those consistent, you know, people seeing problems that the outside world is seeing that are a sign of future issues are going to struggle with or vice versa, you know, you guys think, you know, internally, we think we’re doing great, but externally there’s a gap there, and perception and let’s talk a little more fund-raising too, you could use this tio test some different fund-raising messages, couldn’t you? What resonates best with donors protection? Actually, you know, one of the key kind of components in determining your messaging and fund-raising whether you’d be even if you think kind of educational institutions, colleges, secondary school, things like that. Um, do you kind of lead in your messaging with what makes you distinctive and unique, or do plead with the messaging that will have a broader appeal to a wider audience in the example sometimes uses, imagine that you’re either an all women’s college or a college with a long a particular religious tradition. And are you trying to kind of narrowly focus on people who value those things above all else, or you trying to kind of go out to a broader population and get a bigger, more diverse set of people in your in your school with which those lead messages might not be the most buy-in including and appalled, but how can a survey be used specifically in that example, then? Well, you can do is you can put out a variety. Of different messages and test the desire ability so say we describe a certain organization in certain with certain keywords and messages. He’s, how desirable would be that organization terms of you supporting in donating money for that organization? Then you have on the group of messages which both of which may be true about this organization again if it’s done anonymously and people don’t know the organization’s even more helpful than that. So i’m thinking, okay, so if you don’t know, the organization has done kind of blind like that, you know, to what degree and that’s kind of more talk more general population study, uh, how desirable these other set of descriptors? And then you get an idea about for my example for you, you’ll find out, is that the quality of faculty and staff and teachers and ability to develop your own individual kind of curriculum and and, you know, looking at the social and personal development that person will be the things that test out best and things about a particular religious affiliation although may not test our poorly aren’t going to be the core values of the wide group of people you can use those secondary messages to say because we have this tradition, we are unique position, so so then you can even use surveying toe helpyou sequence is your messages exactly, and so that’s what we’ve done, that exact thing with the you know, imagine the front page of your website or the front page of your of of of your kind of guide book, or whatever written materials you produce being those upfront primary messes, and then you think about what the secondary and we’re the tertiary ones because you don’t want to run from your uniqueness, either. I think it’s important to feel like you have unique ways to contribute, but you need to tie them into the core values of the population just serving, or the people that made support you in order to truly make a connection with a wide audience if you want to get to a very narrow base, well, that’s a different story, but for the most part, people are trying to exit chadband their scope and expand their flexibility in terms of either who they serve or who supports them just going back. Teo mission focus. One of the questions you asked in the survey was, how confident are you that your donors or other stakeholders are clear about your mission on dh? Everybody said either completely confident or moderately confident, but teo related to the point that you made earlier. How does brooke break out the first and second, only about a third were completely confident in two thirds were just moderately confident that people who know the organization are clear about what the organization does, right, and that’s and that’s, you know, going a key difference. We’ve done the research study for, you know, a local organization in new england that was doing prodding a variety of different services to local community, including, um, shelter and providing food services, heating and utility helped and things like that and, you know, they were kind of known for two key things, and they had a suite of fourteen of fifteen services that they were really proud of and and felt like that gave them a unique kind of very wide based impact on the community, but when you surveyed their donors, they were known for a couple key things and, you know, i think they want to feel like they had a much broader on. Understanding among the people that are supporting them and their stakeholders of what they really do. All right, paul guerin is a partner at professional survey group. You’ll find their sight at professional survey group dot com and we’re talking about survey savvy let’s talk a little about some of the nuts and bolts. What? What are the variables that go into determining how to do your survey? Well, you know, i think this, you know, there’s three major kind of modalities actually collected information that’s phone based research, online research and paper surveys come in person interviewing as well, but paper serving as kind of died out a little bit, but phone and online being the biggest and online, certainly in the last decade, really taking course. So one of the kind of determines is, well, how can we get to our population? Do, for example, do we have pretty good e mail, pop penetration or accessibility so that we could do something online? Do we not? Then we’re going to have to do a phone based survey will i’m sure phone his phone is quite a bit more expensive exactly that, you know, we do a lot of online, because, again, we’re trying to build on south getting, you know, a broad base of information for people with costs issues, and one thing i do kind of tell in organizations is there’s there’s a difference between sophie was well, if we go out to online that’ll bias up sample because the only people that are online a lot, our people check their email. Well, that may be true, but what are we trying to achieve here? You know, we can actually do this study for, you know, a fifth of the cost if we go online and are you really going to get that different information? Are you trying to pinpoint whether a certain question is seventy percent of seventy five percent or you’re really just trying to understand that here, the things people think we’re doing well, what is the kind of top bucket of things here’s? The things we’re not doing so well on the actual specificity of the data is not particularly critical in terms of well, yeah, maybe it’s a little bit biased in one way or another, but you can actually pull off the research financially by using your online they upleaf except with were also in that example. Isn’t it relevant whether the email using the active email using population is going tio have some some bias toward the objectives of the survey? I mean, does it really matter that a lot of people check the email? Eso they’re going to be the ones who will have a greater propensity to answers that really matter to the purposes of your survey and your charitable work and that’s kind of one of the first things we talk about with you, let’s, let’s talk through the ratification. So if i find out, for example, a group says, you know, we have about fifty percent emails, i said, well, who do you have e mails? Well, it’s, mostly people, you know, younger, ok? So then age could be a legitimate buy-in factor. And so then i said, well, you know, given that, you know, if we look at your donor and then the actual kind of looked at the percentage of monetary support you’re getting, you find out that eighty percent of the forty and over well, we’re not going to want to exclude them from the study in that particular case, it’s worth saying okay, maybe we do a mixed methodology of phone and online. Or maybe we do phone it’s worth that. So there’s certainly a circumstances where i would say, you know, in this particular circumstance is biased and there i was i would say, you know what? For what you want to know, it’s. Fine to get read elearning online population that’s that’s. Okay, what’s the i gotta move on a little bit. Paul what’s the reliability across you mentioned phone, email and and paper surveys are they do they vary in terms of reliability. They vary in terms of kind of, i think what i found actually study on several years ago in a previous lifetime, but that phone research people tend to be, well, one thing briefer because you in-kind getting getting them stirring the phone researches it’s more active and you’re actually pursuing people to prove spade in the research. The downside that is that sometime you’re catching people that’s a very narrow window, which is kind of catch them on the phone and do this as on online or paper, they could do it at their own leisure. So sometimes you get very truncated responses, particularly if you asking kind of open ended items about that require commentary? We’ve also found that people tend to be nicer on the phone, so if they’re rating you on a scale of one to five it’s harder to say something bad, it’s harder to be a negative on the phone. Yeah, so not that it doesn’t happen, but you tend to see the scores being slightly higher on the phone, an online or paper where you don’t have that what’s called a demand characteristic, you know, social expectation of being nice, okay, so that that’s a big difference i’ve seen between phone versus the other two methodologies is this is this something? And we have just, like three minutes or so before before we have to end all this talk about serving, but is it is it something that charity khun i could do on their own? If we’re going to a short survey, can they can they do this and be successful? You know, you know i at they can, you know, i think there’s always caveats about making sure that you have, you know you’re asking questions in the right way you’re not biasing your questions in a way they’re going to get you information. That is what you want to hear and not necessary. What these actuality but there are tools out there like surveymonkey and bloomerang that are going online. Survey tools that are relatively easy to use if you just have a short survey it’s not that complicated you want to get a bunch of yes, no questions or some commentary you khun go use those those were relatively inexpensive. Certainly this free virgins of them. But even the kind of pay versions they are very, very inexpensive her month way you surveymonkey for the for the show’s a sze yu know exactly. You know that, you know? And for a lot of needs, they can solve them. You know, if you want to get a quick read on you can pop out a survey monkey auras bloomerang survey tia population. You could certainly do that yourself. They’re fairly easy tools, tio. Okay, but then if you’re going deeper like this is part of a strategic planning process or you’re not sure about the mission focus that you should be you should be engaged in for the next over the next five years. I mean that is more detailed, and you want to probably have someone professional helping, so you’re eliminating biasi? Yeah, i think if you’re going to get into that depth and really talking about shaping the way your organization is currently are going to operate in the future, then you need to really we’ll get somebody to kind of look atyou survey and like what we do with lot of they will say, hey, what what role do you want us to play here and what you know? And we could do that with what, what? But you have? And at minimum, let’s, look over your survey and say, well, you know, that question isn’t going to get what you want, it’s going toe it’s going toe secure the issue more than going to clarify all i have to stop because we have just a minute and i want i want to talk about getting feedback, is it? Is it wise to share survey results or to tell people that you’ll share the your your findings with them like everything it’s, context dependent, i bias towards sharing? Yes on i think thinking on how you’re going to do that because i think especially when you’re you’re serving people close to you, either your own employees or donors. They’re gonna have an extra day. Shinhwa what happened with this information? What did you do with it? What did you find? And what is he going to be? Action. So i’m very biased whenever is appropriate. Find a way to share the information. The main information, the survey, maybe you don’t need to share everything. Maybe something’s a kind of nuance that you wantto kind of work on internally. But i think some of the main things not only what you found, but what you’re going to do with it. I think that is a great power. It makes people feel like, well, there’s a reason i did this research and i contributed because now the organization i care about is utilizing an unproductive went. If you google philanthropy jargon generator, you’ll see what got me thinking about jargon in the non-profit community it’s a random collection of now nhs verbs announce adjectives and verbs, but not in that order, though thinkit’s, verbs, adjectives and now nes andi it’s a little disconcerting. I think that somebody, somebody thought there’s so much jargon in philanthropy that they should create a generator to help you create, create your own if create something, if you if you’re at a road, block your mental block and you just can’t think of the right phrase, put in a random jargon phrase and and you don’t have to define it because people don’t define jargon so that’s little disconcerting. Um, got a lot of comments on this on this post over a dozen some people use it. Teo, i think some people use jargon to sound smart, which is unfortunate, but there was one comment or someone uses jargon to screen for expertise because hill, he’ll ask people what they’re lie. Bunt and sideburns rates are and leibrandt is someone who donated last year, but not this year and a side bunt is someone who didn’t donate it in some year, but not this year, keeping myself out of jargon jail, of course, so he uses it to sort of screen that’s interesting, but generally i think you want to communicate so that people understand what you’re talking about. The jargon generator, i think, is fun, but you wouldn’t want to use it as your dictionary as your when you’re writing to donors or ah, potential funders. So post is called jargon. We’re talking this week about content marketing. Scott, what is content? Marketing? Uh, content marketing. You know, i actually don’t like that particular title gave it to me. Okay. I know. I gave you the guy stabs me in the back in the first sentence. What can i say? All right, well, i’m calling you out. It was your type. He changes. Mind you’re entitled change minds. Go ahead. What do you what is this thing that we don’t have a name for? Well, we have we actually have many names for it. I prefer using something like authority marketing because the point of this kind of thing is that you write stuff and you you send out articles that our authoritative in your particular space authority marketing says has such gravitas to it. It does. It does. Actually. Sounds like it should be jargon. No, but the point is that what you want to do is you want to give people something to read that that’s not anything new that’s, you know, newspapers and everything else that’s been published forever. I want to do that, right? So we’re encouraging people to block is that? Is that where we’re headed? That’s part of it? Yeah, that’s, uh, we’re encouraging people to put out information that the people that they want to talk to are interested in knowing about that’s, that’s it, or whether it’s blogging, uh, whether it’s, uh, you know, paidcontent, uh, whether it’s, maybe even aggregated content, which we can talk about also, which is actually pulling information from other locations, and then writing about it. Okay, thank you for defining that keeps self out of jargon, general. So we’re very jargon sensitive this week. You can tel i i hear that. All right, i get the get the keys. I’m i’m on the trigger. I’ve got a hair trigger. So, content marketing authority marketing. Um, let me just talk a little bit about what i think content marketing is okay. It’s actually been a bad name for me because it’s, uh, it’s really it’s being used by what’s called content farms, which are sites that, like examiner dot com maybe to a smaller degree, but they they pay very little to their their authors. And the and the point of little writing is to get keyword rich maybe keyword overblown articles, because then then they sell advertising space, right? They shall advertising space against those. And until recently, google, you know, could be fooled into paying a lot of attention to a site that had a whole lot of appropriate word. All right, but not great content and cheating the writers. And that sounds terrible. Alright, that’s not a terrible, especially since i’m late i’m against. All right, um, good. So the other side of content marketing, which i call authority marketing, is creating articles. However you do it, whether it’s yourself, blogging or whether you actually pay somebody to write for you what co-branding information and putting it out there for people that you know, something, they’re interested. In actually reading, not just the google will find it and bring it up in search results because it’s much better people actually go to your site because they want to go to your sight because he has a reputation on dh that is not stuff that’s necessarily touting your good work. Oh, i mean, it could be stuff that’s valuable in because it’s related to what you do write an interesting that way? Yeah, think of it as a cz yourself, if you’re mean, you know, we know what you do, and we know well, i know some of the things you do, and so what are the things that people would write about and publish that would bring tony martignetti to a website, you know, on it may it may be about non-profit but it may also be about creating, uh, creating audio’s shows that draw audiences and maybe that’s related to non-profit or not. So you really need to know your audience that’s really big key, okay? And i want to say that generally i’m an example of what not to do so i appreciate you using man’s example of what should be done or who could. Be done could be let’s, not goes for us should, but generally people would be wiser to take the course opposite mine and self deprecation is one of those things that comedians really like to get into. I do that’s true, but we know that most charities don’t blogged, right, isn’t you have an article sixty nine percent don’t block and yes and that’s true. And you know what? I think what happened is that over time and i’m talking about the last now ten, twelve years blogging got to be, you know, everybody blogged, um and so, you know, it was your block and your mom read it and that kind of stuff, and it turned out to be pretty useless for most people because they may have written something, but nobody cared. Yeah, and so i think that the blogging that name blogging got a bad lap for a while. And so whether let’s just talk about content creation rather than block. Yeah, because there are other ways to do it to youtube and other ways that you mentioned before, lots of ways and content, as you just kind of alluded to is not necessarily their word it could be what you’re doing right now. The audio shows it could be video, it could be animation, even it could be a whole bunch of things, but the point is to get something that’s that is interesting to to the people you want to talk to so that they then say, g i and, you know, wonder what tony’s got going on today. I think i’ll go over and check in sight, right? Right? And then they’re rewarded at least at least fifty percent of the time that they find something that they like. You don’t have to hit one hundred percent not going to hit on percent, all right, all right, okay. And a way of just tow bring the show. That sort of full circle may be a way of finding out what your stakeholders may be interested in is to survey them and also to find out where they are, whether they’re whether they’re active in social media or more active. Just an email. Yeah, exactly, right, exactly. Because the way you’re going to deliver it goes to your point of knowing your audience, right? And just because you have an audience that you talked to primarily by let’s say email doesn’t mean that you can or should ignore the social media. I’ve got a couple of websites that i managed and i do content creation for them, you know? So so i’m kind of in the business and every time that we publish an article, we also sent out a tweet and a facebook update and they linked in update and those go automatically so anybody who’s looking at us from any of those locations in addition to the weekly email that we send out, has the opportunity to see what we’ve done and you know their choice. They come read more about it or not, but at least they’re getting notified, right? And the interconnectedness between all these social media properties, the one you need, the ones you’re named and you might put flicker in there also can be very much automated, right? Right with a with one exception of google plus which is not yet still released their their a p i that allows automated system’s supposed to for them? Yes, jack, you are shows social media manager regina walton doesn’t outstanding job of knowing how to do all those interconnected ah messages. But it’s it’s really not very hard now and then, but that’s the key is sometimes you can’t automate everything. Sometimes you just have to have, you know, somebody put in the time in order to do what’s, right? Absolutely. I just i don’t want to discourage people thinking you have to have a social media manager in order to make these interconnections it’s valuable because i’m producing so much, but you can’t do it on your own, too, right? Absolutely. Let’s. Talk a little about aggregated content you mentioned. What? What? What does that mean? It sounds like way. Don’t have tio write everything on our own. Yeah, they were produced everything or whatever aggregating content and stealing stuff. Okay on dh aggregated, aggregated content. Basically what? Here’s the here’s. What happens? You get a google news feed on our ss feed, you monitor somebody’s block that you know, has good stuff that you like and let’s say that tony wrote a block that i really, really like. It makes a lot of sense for us. My my leadership would probably like to read that. So i got a choice. I could just copy and paste it into my sight, which tony probably wouldn’t appreciate, right? That’s very bad. And not only that google. Well, actually, uh, take us down for that now it won’t take us down, but they’ll they’ll decrease our popularity because they say, hey, this is already than publish whyyou republica interested? Okay, they know they don’t really care about the fact that you plagiarized um, but they do care about the fact that it’s not original. Okay, so what i would do with that is i would write, you know, maybe a couple street who’s that tony martignetti wrote this really interesting post about jargon this week on his block. If you want to read it, click here. So what that does is it gives me something to comment on, and it lets my readers say, cheese. Not only does scott put out this stuff that’s interesting to me, but he’s also bringing me things that i may not have known about from other sources. So this is really a good way snusz to be to find out things that i want to know and what it does for tony, of course, is it brings another reader to tony site it’s really a good wayto work, aggregated content understand very, very organic way of bringing people to your site on give it back by by giving them value. Um okay, scotty let’s see, i’m here. Yeah, different the different platforms that we might use different properties that we might use for our authority marketing have different personalities, right? I mean, you might not necessarily do the same thing on twitter that you would on facebook on dh versus linked in certainly, although the social media platforms have a whole lot of commonality to them, but right, twitter is only going to take, you know, a sentence and maybe a picture where is facebook could take more than that lengthen could take more than that. Google plus could take significantly more on that. Actually, you can publish directly on google. Plus, i don’t particularly mentor recommend that, but it’s people have done it on the menu. That’s interesting. I’m sorry. I just ask, why? Why do you say that about google? Plus what? Why not putting fresh content directly on google? Plus, um, google plus is like a hyper blogged in that the content rules by very quickly and so it’s very difficult to them find something of interest down there if it’s kind of rolled off of your screen. So okay, so not like, uh, it’s like a regular blonde or an online publication where you’ve got a nice kind of a content management system, brings things to the front, keeps him there for some starita time and then actually could be found easily in the published right. And and i think the length of articles is a big differentiating factor. If you have anything longer than a few sentences, you really don’t want a post directly on social media. Okay, you want your own, you want your own space, you want your own space, and then you wanna leverage the social media that has the first paragraph, maybe or on a link back to your your own content site. Okay? And sort of wrapped up in everything we’re talking about. Is that the same? Content can be used in different ways. I mean, on dh lynette singleton, who is on twitter often retweeting the show on dh lynette, thank you for doing it today she is at s c g the number four non-profits on lincoln on twitter if you wanna follow her, um, makes the point that, you know, one one piece of content can be used across lots of different platforms in different forms. Absolutely. I’ve even multipurpose, um, that has gone, taken an audio podcast like yours and has transcribed it into text. Oh, interesting on and then what? And then they just post that really? Okay. That’s interesting. Yeah, i can either be edited, so that was more of on article or serious of articles or can be just posted as it as it goes. I think they successful way to do that would be split it up in the articles, post them as content and maybe even link back to the recording of the show. So there’s, somebody prefers to here, they can still hear it, and i could see a value. And that would be you’d get some search engine value from the transcript because search engines can’t. Search audio. But all those words that are in the transcript would be searched if that’s exactly right. And there there are many ofthe offshore overseas services that will transcribe at an unbelievable rate. So, you know, i may not be perfect, but it’s it’s enough to get to get online and get it, maybe useful enough for someone to say. Yeah, i see what he’s saying, but i prefer to hear it so they click onto the the audio stream. Got it right. Okay, but again the point, multi multi purpose ing your your content coming and going back to the earlier guest ball. Gearan a survey could be something that is used as authority marketing. Absolutely. Because what you doing in that place is getting your readership to become the authority. And people like, you know, they have there. They’re their word and their opinion. I would caution we do surveys for some of my properties as well. And there is there’s a survey burnout where you just continue asking people for their opinion and well, you know, at the first couple of times they really like it. Especially if you give them feedback and write an article. About what? What they said. But if it’s too long or more continuous or too frequent, you’ll notice, uh, extreme drop off your respondents. Yes. Okay. Okay. We’re going to leave it there for for for real this time.
